Abstract:The famous Erlangen Programme was coined by Felix Klein in 1872 as an algebraic approach allowing to incorporate fixed symmetry groups as the core ingredient for geometric analysis, seeing the chosen symmetries as intrinsic invariance of all objects and tools. This idea was broadened essentially by Elie Cartan in the beginning of the last century, and we may consider (curved) geometries as modelled over certain (flat) Klein's models. The aim of this short survey is to explain carefully the basic concepts and algebraic tools built over several recent decades. We focus on the direct link between the jets of sections of homogeneous bundles and the associated induced modules, allowing us to understand the overall structure of invariant linear differential operators in purely algebraic terms. This allows us to extend essential parts of the concepts and procedures to the curved cases.

Abstract:Jet manifolds and vector bundles allow one to employ tools of differential geometry to study differential equations, for example those arising as equations of motions in physics. They are necessary for a geometrical formulation of Lagrangian mechanics and the calculus of variations. It is thus only natural to require their generalization in geometry of $\mathbb{Z}$-graded manifolds and vector bundles. Our aim is to construct the $k$-th order jet bundle $\mathfrak{J}^{k}_{\mathcal{E}}$ of an arbitrary $\mathbb{Z}$-graded vector bundle $\mathcal{E}$ over an arbitrary $\mathbb{Z}$-graded manifold $\mathcal{M}$. We do so by directly constructing its sheaf of sections, which allows one to quickly prove all its usual properties. It turns out that it is convenient to start with the construction of the graded vector bundle of $k$-th order (linear) differential operators $\mathfrak{D}^{k}_{\mathcal{E}}$ on $\mathcal{E}$. In the process, we discuss (principal) symbol maps and a subclass of differential operators whose symbols correspond to completely symmetric $k$-vector fields, thus finding a graded version of Atiyah Lie algebroid. Necessary rudiments of geometry of $\mathbb{Z}$-graded vector bundles over $\mathbb{Z}$-graded manifolds are recalled.

Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Their point of view is guided by the leitmotiv that higher-spin gravity theories call for higher-order generalisations of Lie derivatives and diffeomorphisms. Nevertheless, the material covered here may be of general interest to anyone working on topics where geometrical (coordinate-free, global, generic) and mathematically rigorous definitions of differential operators are required.

Abstract:We analyze the structure of Feigin-Stoyanovsky's principal subspaces of affine Lie algebra from the jet algebra viewpoint. For type $A$ level one principal subspaces, we show that their shifted multi-graded Hilbert series can be expressed either using the quantum dilogarithm or as certain generating functions ``counting" finite-dimensional representations of $A$-type quivers. This notably results in novel fermionic character formulas for these principal subspaces. Moreover, our result implies that all level one principal subspaces of type $A$ are ``classically free" as vertex algebras. We also analyze infinite jet algebras associated to principal subspaces of affine vertex algebras $L_{1}(\mathfrak{so}_5)$, $L_{1}(\mathfrak{so}_8)$ and $L_1(\frak{g}_2)$. We derive a new character formula for the principal subspace of $L_1(\mathfrak{so}_5)$, proving that it is classically free, and present evidence that the principal subspaces of $L_1(\mathfrak{so}_8)$ and of $L_1(\frak{g}_2)$ are also classically free.

Jets and principal components of monomial ideals, and very well-covered graphs

Abstract:Motivated by using combinatorics to study jets of monomial ideals, we extend a definition of jets from graphs to clutters. We offer some structural results on their vertex covers, and show an interesting connection between the cover ideal of the jets of a clutter and the symbolic powers of the cover ideal of the original clutter. We use this connection to prove that jets of very well-covered graphs are very well-covered. Next, we turn our attention to principal jets of monomial ideals, describing their primary decomposition and minimal generating sets. Finally, we give formulas to compute various algebraic invariants of principal jets of monomial ideals, including their Hilbert series, Betti numbers, multiplicity and regularity.

Abstract:Abstract We review some classical and modern aspects of hypergeometric differential equations, including A -hypergeometric systems of Gel $$'$$ ′ fand, Graev, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. Some recent advances in this theory, such as Euler–Koszul homology, rank jump phenomena, irregularity questions and Hodge theoretic aspects are discussed with more details. We also give some applications of the theory of hypergeometric systems to toric mirror symmetry.

Jet Bundle Geometry of Scalar Field Theories

Abstract:For scalar field theories, such as those EFTs describing the Higgs, it is well-known that the 2-derivative Lagrangian is captured by geometry. That is, the set of operators with exactly 2 derivatives can be obtained by pulling back a metric from a field space manifold $M$ to spacetime $\Sigma$. We here generalise this geometric understanding of scalar field theories to higher- (and lower-) derivative Lagrangians. We show how the entire EFT Lagrangian with up to 4-derivatives can be obtained from geometry by pulling back a metric to $\Sigma$ from the 1-jet bundle that is (roughly) associated with maps from $\Sigma$ to $M$. More precisely, our starting point is to trade the field space $M$ for a fibre bundle $\pi:E \to \Sigma$, with fibre $M$, of which the scalar field $\phi$ is a local section. We discuss symmetries and field redefinitions in this bundle formalism, before showing how everything can be `prolongated' to the 1-jet bundle $J^1 E$ which, as a manifold, is the space of sections $\phi$ that agree in their zeroth and first derivatives above each spacetime point. Equipped with a notion of (spacetime and internal) symmetry on $J^1 E$, the idea is that one can write down the most general metric on $J^1 E$ consistent with symmetries, in the spirit of the effective field theorist, and pull it back to spacetime to build an invariant Lagrangian; because $J^1 E$ has `derivative coordinates', one naturally obtains operators with more than 2-derivatives from this geometry. We apply this formalism to various examples, including a single real scalar in 4d and a quartet of real scalars with $O(4)$ symmetry that describes the Higgs EFTs. We show how an entire non-redundant basis of 0-, 2-, and 4-derivative operators is obtained from jet bundle geometry in this way. Finally, we study the connection to amplitudes and the role of geometric invariants.

Abstract:We introduce new notions of log jet spaces. Mildly singular spaces are ``smooth'' in log geometry, so their log jet spaces behave like the jet spaces of smooth varieties. Myriad examples contrast log jet spaces with the usual jet spaces of schemes. We then compute the log K\"ahler differentials of the log jet and arc spaces after de Fernex and Docampo. We obtain some of their applications to the structure of the log jet space. We conclude with comparison remarks with other log jet spaces.

Abstract:Given a linear differential equation with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}(x)$, an important question is to know whether its full space of solutions consists of algebraic functions, or at least if one of its specific solutions is algebraic. After presenting motivating examples coming from various branches of mathematics, we advertise in an elementary way a beautiful local-global arithmetic approach to these questions, initiated by Grothendieck in the late sixties. This approach has deep ramifications and leads to the still unsolved Grothendieck-Katz $p$-curvature conjecture.

On the algebraic structure of differentially homogeneous polynomials

Abstract:The paper describes the algebraic structure of the graded algebra of differentially homogeneous polynomials of fixed finite order. We show that it is a finitely generated algebra, and we exhibit a minimal set of generators. Along the way, we provide a simpler proof of the so-called Schmidt--Kolchin conjecture (proved in a previous paper) . From the algebraic point of view, this provides natural compactifications of jet bundles of projective spaces. From the invariant theoretic point of view, this provides new examples, not covered (to our knowledge) by known conjectures in the subject, of unipotent sub-groups of general linear groups, whose algebras of invariants are finitely generated (and more precisely gives a First Fundamental Theorem for such groups, following the terminology in Invariant Theory).

Abstract:We have studied possible applications of a particular pseudo-differential algebra in singular analysis for the construction of fundamental solutions and Green's functions of a certain class of elliptic partial differential operators. The pseudo-differential algebra considered in the present work, comprises degenerate partial differential operators on stretched cones which can be locally described as Fuchs type differential operators in appropriate polar coordinates. We present a general approach for the explicit construction of their parametrices, which is based on the concept of an asymptotic parametrix, introduced in \cite{FHS16}. For some selected partial differential operators, we demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by an explicit calculation of fundamental solutions and Green's functions from the corresponding parametrices. In our approach, the Green's functions are given in separable form, which generalizes the Laplace expansion of the Green's function of the Laplace operator in three dimensions. As a concrete application in quantum scattering theory, we construct a fundamental solution of a single-particle Hamilton operator with singular Coulomb potential.

Abstract:We generalize the main result of Demailly \cite{D2} for the bundles $E_{k,m}^{GG}(V^*)$ of jet differentials of order $k$ and weighted degree $m$ to the bundles $E_{k,m}(V^*)$ of the invariant jet differentials of order $k$ and weighted degree $m$. Namely, Theorem 0.5 from \cite{D2} and Theorem 9.3 from \cite{D1} provide a lower bound $\frac{c^k}{k}m^{n+kr-1}$ on the number of the linearly independent holomorphic global sections of $E_{k,m}^{GG} V^* \bigotimes \mathcal{O}(-m \delta A)$ for some ample divisor $A$. The group $G_k$ of local reparametrizations of $(\mathbb{C},0)$ acts on the $k$-jets by orbits of dimension $k$, so that there is an automatic lower bound $\frac{c^k}{k} m^{n+kr-1}$ on the number of the linearly independent holomorphic global sections of $E_{k,m}V^* \bigotimes \mathcal{O}(-m \delta A)$. We formulate and prove the existence of an asymptotic duality along the fibers of the Green-Griffiths jet bundles over projective manifolds. We also prove a Serre duality for asymptotic sections of jet bundles. An application is also given for partial application to the Green-Griffiths conjecture.
