Abstract:Experimental evaluation of the properties of filter materials in the selection of material for filtration of inlet air of internal combustion engines was carried out. The filtration characteristics were determined: filtration efficiency and accuracy, as well as flow resistance depending on the dust mass load. Filter materials based on cellulose, polyester, microfiber glass, and cotton and polyester nonwoven beds were studied. Two filter beds consisting of three base filter materials were designed: composite K1 (polyester-microglass-cellulose) and composite K2 (cellulose-microglass-cellulose), and their characteristics were performed. The air filtration quality factor was used to analyze the test results. The coefficient of filtration efficiency was defined, showing the effect of the preliminary stage on the total time of the filtration process. It was shown that the K1 composite has high (dpmax = 1.5÷3 μm) filtration accuracy, high initial filtration efficiency (99.8%), which shortens the pre-stage, and extends to 96-98% the duration of the main stage of the filtration process. The K1 composite obtained more than twice the mass loading of dust (kdK1 = 148,9 g/m2), which will allow the vehicle's mileage to be extended.

Abstract:Traditional cellulose filter media used for air filtration in vehicle engines are characterized by 99.9% filtration efficiency and accuracy above 2–5 μm. The highest engine component wear is caused by dust grains above 1 μm. Filter media with nanofiber additions provide greater filtration efficiency of dust grains below 5 μm. Filter material selection for vehicle engine air filter is a problem because their manufacturers mainly provide only the structure parameters: pore size, air permeability, and thickness. There is no information about material filtration properties using polydisperse test dust. The manuscript presents methodology and experimental test results of five samples A, B, C, D and E, filter materials differing in their chemical composition and structure parameters. In the first stage, efficiency characteristics φw, filtration accuracy dzmax and the flow resistance Δpw depending on the dust absorption coefficient km of three filter cartridges of each material, A, B, C, D and E, were determined. Then, from each material characteristics of one piece was selected in order to compare their initial and initial period efficiencies as well as changes in the flow resistance depending on the dust absorption coefficient km. Obtained results showed that the filter materials differ significantly in efficiency and accuracy values in the initial filtration period. Initial period duration is also different, i.e., filtration efficiency increasing time to a certain value, which for materials with a nanofiber layer is much shorter, which minimizes engine component wear. For materials with nanofibers, flow resistance increase intensity is greater, which results from surface filtration. Filtration efficiency of each filter material sample A, B, C, D and E was assessed with the filtration quality coefficient including the efficiency and flow resistance. In the available literature, the problem of increasing filtration efficiency in the initial period is known, but there are no results for specific filter materials. Research shows that filter material characteristics are closely related. Each increase in efficiency and accuracy of intake air filtration reduces engine components wear, but it is related to flow resistance increase in the engine intake system, which reduces its power, and increases need for more frequent filter servicing.

Properties of material with nanofiber layer used for filtering the inlet air of internal combustion engines

Abstract:Nanofiber properties, and the possibilities of their application in industry, including the production of car air intake filtration materials for vehicle engines are discussed. The attention is paid to the low efficiency of standard filtration materials based on cellulose in the range of dust grains below 5 μm. The properties of filtration materials with nanofibers addition are described. The conditions, and methodology of material filter paper tests at the station with particle counter were developed. Studies on the filtration characteristics, such as: efficiency, accuracy, as well as pressure drop of filtration materials differing in structure were made: standard paper, cellulose, and these materials with the addition of nanofibers. These are commonly used filter materials for filter inserts production of car air intake systems. Test results show significantly higher values of the efficiency, and filtration accuracy of materials with nanofiber layer addition of dust grains below 5 μm in comparison with standard filter paper. It was found that there are 16 μm dust grains in the air flow behind the insert made out of cellulose,, which may be the reason for the accelerated wear of the engines piston-piston ring-cylinder association. Lower values of dust mass loading coefficient km for filtration materials with the addition of nanofiber layer, in relation to standard filter paper were observed.

Abstract:Pollutant properties in intake air to internal combustion engines were analyzed. Mineral dust particles’ influence on accelerated engine components’ wear was discussed. Dust concentration values in the air under various operating conditions in trucks and special vehicles were presented. The idea and necessity for using two-stage filters, operating in a “multi-cyclone–porous partition” system for vehicles operated in dusty air conditions, are presented. Information from the literature information has been presented, showing that impurities in small grain sizes reduce fiber bed absorbency. It has been shown that such a phenomenon occurs during filter material operation, located directly behind the inertial filter (multi-cyclone), which off-road vehicles are equipped with. It results in a greater pressure drop intensity increase and a shorter proper filter operation period. It has been shown that filter material selection for the motor vehicle air filter requires knowledge of the mass of stopped dust per filtration unit area (dust absorption coefficient km) determined for a given permissible resistance value Δpfdop. It has been shown that there is no information on absorption coefficient values for filter materials operating in a two-stage “multi-cyclone–porous partition” separation system. Original methodology and conditions for determining dust absorption coefficient (km) of a separation partition, operating under the conditions of two-stage filtration, were presented. The following characteristics were tested: separation efficiency, filtration performance, and pressure drop characteristics of three different filtration partitions. These were A (cellulose), B (cellulose and polyester), and C (cellulose, polyester, and nanofibers layer), working individually and in a two-stage system—behind the cyclone. Granulometric dust composition dosed into the cyclone and cyclone downstream was determined. During tests, conditions corresponding to air filter’s actual operating conditions, including separation speed and dust concentration in the air, were maintained. For the pressure drop values, the dust absorption coefficient (km) values of three different filtration partitions (A, B, and C), working individually and in a two-stage system—behind the cyclone—were determined experimentally.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental study of the effect of the mass of dust retained on a fibrous filter bed operating singly and in a "cyclone-filter-bed" system on changes in filtration efficiency and accuracy, as well as the increase in flow resistance. The research was carried out using a novel and unprecedented method, determining the dust absorption coefficient km of the filter baffle under laboratory conditions. A filtration system built of a single cyclone and a cylindrical filter cartridge with an appropriately sized surface set behind it was studied. Conditions corresponding to the actual operating conditions of the air filter were maintained: dust concentration, filtration speed and dust extraction from the cyclone settling tank. The purpose of the research was to evaluate filter materials with different structures in terms of filtration efficiency and accuracy, as well as flow resistance. The study showed that the parameters of the structure of filter materials—permeability, grammage and thickness—affect the process of retaining dust particles. It was shown that the increase in the flow resistance of the filter bed has a higher intensity when dust grains of small sizes are directed at it, which is the case when the bed is operated behind a cyclone, which separates larger dust grains from the air. There is a reduction in the operating time of the filtration system due to the limitation of the permissible resistance ∆pfdop, and the corresponding dust absorption km has a lower value. For a fixed value of the flow resistance, the dust absorption coefficient km2 of three different filtration baffles AC, B2, and B, working with a cyclone, take values 50–100% smaller than when working in a single-stage system. It has been shown that the "cyclone-filter baffle" unit, due to its greater dust separation capability, allows the filter cartridge to operate for a longer time until a certain flow resistance is reached. This allows the unit to operate longer at lower flow resistance without changing the filter cartridge, thus saving energy. The km values obtained during the tests, using the proposed original method, allow the selection of the filter bed for specific vehicle operating conditions by modelling its course.

Dust Loading Performance of a Novel Submicro-Fiber Composite Filter Medium for Engine

Abstract:Airborne dust can cause engine wear and contribute to engine gas emission. This study developed a novel submicro-fiber filter medium to provide protection to engines against dust. The wet-laid submicro-fiber medium was prepared by a dual-layer paper machine, and its dust loading performance was compared with other filter media during laboratory and field tests. During the laboratory tests, the dust holding capacity of the wet-laid submicro-fiber medium was 48% and 10% higher than that of the standard heavy-duty medium and electrospun submicro-fiber medium, respectively. During the field tests, the pressure drop of the wet-laid submicro-fiber filter was 45% lower than that of the standard heavy-duty filter after 10,000 km of operation. It was found that there were two crucial ways to design a better filter medium for protection against dust. Firstly, the surface loading rather than the depth loading was preferred for dust filtration. The submicro-fiber layer kept large amounts of dust particles from penetrating into the depth of filter medium. Secondly, particles were captured preferably by fibers rather than pores. The unique fibrous structure of the wet-laid submicro-fiber medium made more particle deposition take place on fibers via interception and inertial impaction.

Performance characteristics of air intake pleated panel filters for internal combustion engines in a two-stage configuration

Abstract:Previous numerical studies that have used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental software to address the effects of the geometric parameters of pleats on the pressure drop and air flow rate through a fibrous filter are analyzed. The analysis establishes that using a test dust with gradually smaller particle sizes (10, 5, and 1 μm) results in a more intense increase in the filter pressure drop, thus decreasing the service life of the filter. The benefits of using a multicyclone as the first stage of air filtration are discussed. Selecting the air filter by determining the active surface of the filter medium Ac based on the allowable filtration rate is not sufficient; to select the filter medium of a motor vehicle air filter, the dust mass retained per unit of filtration area (mass loading of dust km) must be known for a specific allowable pressure drop Δpfdop. New methods and conditions for determining the mass loading of dust km for filter paper and non-woven fabric in single-stage and two-stage filtration systems are presented. The characteristics of the separation efficiency and filtration performance as well as the pressure drop of a filter set comprising a single cyclone and a filter element with a specific filter medium surface are determined. The effects of the particle size distribution of the dust in the air downstream of the cyclone on the mass loading of dust km of the filter paper and non-woven fabric in a two-stage filtration system are presented. The mileage of a truck fitted with a single-stage or two-stage filtration system in a “multicyclone–panel filter” configuration is estimated based on the calculated mass loading of dust km of the filter paper and non-woven fabric. © 2018 American Association for Aerosol Research

Abstract:Fibrous filters are commonly used for aerosol purification and sampling. The filtration efficiency has been extensively studied using standard aerosol generators, yet the literature on experimental data and theoretical study concerning the filtration of agglomerates from real engines remains scarce. A filtration efficiency test system was developed to determine the filtration efficiency of two types of filters (uncoated and fluorocarbon coated) loaded by particulate matter (PM) emissions from a gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine. The experimental results showed that the filtration efficiency in terms of PM mass and number increased over time for both types of filters. The fractional efficiency (penetration efficiency) curves for the test fibrous filters rendered a U-shaped curve for particle sizes from 70 to 500 nm, and the most penetrating particulate size (MPPS) decreased over time. A small fraction of accumulation mode particles with the size between 70 nm to 500 nm penetrated the filters while almost all nucleation mode particles with the size below 50 nm were captured by the filters. The filtration efficiency derived from an empirical model based on classical single-fiber theory for laden filters generally agreed with the experimental data for the first 500 s, but suffered a significant deviation by approximately one order of magnitude at 948 s. A better estimate of the filtration efficiency trend with the maximum deviation of about 20% (except for large particles at the high end of the measurement spectra) was obtained by using a revised model which incorporates the effects of the increase in filter solidity, local velocity, dynamic shape factor and effective total length of fibers during the filtration process. © 2017 American Association for Aerosol Research

Experimental Studies of PowerCore Filters and Pleated Filter Baffles

Abstract:The material most commonly used to filter and clean the intake air of vehicle internal combustion engines is pleated filter paper, which in most cases is shaped in the form of a cylinder or panel. The production technology has a low cost and is not complicated. In addition to high separation efficiency and filtration performance, pleated filter media are required to have low initial pressure drop, which depends on the geometry of the bed. Much research has been conducted in this area. Dust accumulated in the filter bed causes an increase in pressure drop, which is the cause of deformation and sticking of pleats. The lack of stability of the pleats, the need to strengthen them, and the need to obtain small sizes while achieving high efficiency and accuracy of filtration of engine intake air was the reason for the development of a different design and a new technology for making filter cartridges called PowerCore. The distinctive feature of these filters is axial flow in one direction of the air stream, which avoids turbulence and thus minimizes pressure drop. This paper presents a comparative analysis of a standard PowerCore and PowerCore G2 filter bed and two cylindrical filters with a pleated filter bed made of cellulose and polyester. The conditions and methodology of experimental testing of filters with test dust are presented. During the tests, the characteristics of separation efficiency and filtration performance, as well as pressure drop as a function of the mass of dust retained on the filter of two PowerCore filters and two cylindrical filters were performed. Three specimens of test filters with the same filtration area were made from each sample of filter bed. The results showed that in each test of the filter bed, there is an initial filtration period characterized by low (96–98%) initial separation efficiency and the presence of large (dpmax) dust grains. As the dust loading of the bed increases, the separation efficiency and filtration performance obtain higher and higher values. The initial period of filtration ends when the conventional value (99.9%) of separation efficiency is reached. The duration of this period depends on the type of filter bed and for the PowerCore G2 filter ends for a dust loading of km = 33.1 g/m2, and for the cellulose filter for km = 117.3 g/m2. During the initial period, the air behind the PowerCore G2 filter contains grains with sizes in the range of dpmax = 9–16 μm. Behind the cellulose filter, dust grains are much larger, dpmax = 17–35 μm. The total operating time of the PowerCore G2 filter, limited by the achievement of the permittivity resistance Δpwdop = 3 kPa, is twice that of the other filter compositions tested.

Abstract:Particulate matter damages engines of vehicles when blown into the ventilation system. Conventional engine-intake filter is cellulose microfiber board with an average diameter larger than ten microns, which has low removal efficiency of ultrafine particular matter. In this work, we apply ultrafine polyurethane nanofibers (∼122.8 nm) onto pleated cellulose board using scalable multinozzle electroblow spinning technology, which improves filtration efficiency of particulate matter with a diameter of less than 0.3 μm PM0.3 greatly. The thermoplastic polyurethane 85A nanofiber membranes are transparent, and display superior filtration performance which meets up with the 95% filtration efficiency standard in GB 19083-2010 technical requirements for protective face mask for medical use. The lightweight pleated thermoplastic polyurethane/cellulose composites intercept ∼90% ultrafine PM0.3 under airflow velocity of 32 L min-1 and possess great resistance to shock. These hierarchically designed filters follow a mechanical mechanism and can be used in on-road and off-road cars in the long run.

A Study on the Effect of Inlet Air Pollution on the Engine Component Wear and Operation

Abstract:This paper systematically reviews the research progress in the field of the influence of air pollutants in the engine inlet on the accelerated wear of the elements of the association: piston, piston rings, cylinder liner (P-PR-CL), and plain bearing (journal–panel). It was shown at the outset that the primary component of air pollution is road dust. Its main components are dust grains of hard minerals (SiO2, Al2O3), which penetrate the oil film area between two frictionally mating surfaces causing their abrasive wear. Therefore, the effect of three dust parameters (grain size and hardness, and dust concentration in air) on the accelerated wear of the friction pair: piston, piston rings, cylinder liner(P-PR-CL), and plain bearing (journal–pan) is presented extensively. It was noted that the wear values of the same component were obtained by different researchers using different testing techniques and evaluated by different indices. It has been shown that the greatest wear of two frictionally cooperating surfaces is caused by dust grains with sizes equal to the thickness of the oil film at a given moment, which in typical combustion engine associations assumes varied and variable values in the range of 0–50 μm. The oil film thickness between the upper ring and the cylinder liner varies and depends on the crankshaft rotation angle, engine speed and load, and oil viscosity, and takes values less than 10 μm. It was shown that the maximum wear of the cylinder liner, resulting from the cooperation with the piston rings, occurs in the top dead centre (TDC) area and results from unfavorable (high temperature, low piston speed) operating conditions of these elements. From the extensive literature data cited, it follows that abrasive wear is caused by dust grains of specific dimensions, most often 5–20 μm, the greater the wear the greater the hardness of the grains and the sulfur content of the fuel. At the same time, it was shown that the main bearing, crankshaft bearing, and oil ring experienced maximum wear by a different range of particle size, respectively: 20–40, 5–10, and 20–80 μm. It was shown that the mass of dust that enters the engine cylinders and thus the wear of the components is determined by the concentration of dust, the value of which is definitely reduced by the air filter. However, it was pointed out that the low initial filtration efficiency and the presence of large dust grains in the purified air in the initial period of the filter operation (after replacement of the filter element with a new one) may have an impact on the accelerated wear of mainly (P-PR-CL) association. The next stage of the paper presents the effects of excessive wear of the cylinder liner and piston rings of the engine, resulting from actual vehicle operation and bench tests on the decrease in compression pressure and engine power, increase in the intensity of exhaust gas blow-by into the oil sump and increase in oil consumption and exhaust gas toxicity. This paper addresses the current problem of the effect of engine inlet air contaminants on the performance of the air flow meter, which is an essential sensor of the modern internal combustion engine. The phenomenon of deposition of contaminants (mineral dust, salt, carbon deposit, and moisture) on the measuring element (wire or layer anemometer) of the air flow meter has been analyzed. The empirical results presented show that the mineral dust layer on the measuring element of the air flow meter causes a 17.9% reduction in output voltage, and the dust and oil layer causes a 46.7% reduction in output voltage. This affects the decrease in engine power and exhaust toxicity.

The Performance Testing and Analysis of Common New Filter Materials: A Case of Four Filter Materials

Abstract:The complex air environment makes it urgent to build good and safe indoor environments, and the study and application of new materials have become the focus of current research. In this study, we tested and analyzed the structural parameters and filtration performances of the four most commonly used new filter materials in the current market. The results showed that all four new filter materials showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing their filtration efficiency with an increase in filtration velocity. The filtration efficiency of the materials was as follows: PTFE > glass fiber > nanomaterial > electret. The filtration efficiency of all materials reached its maximum when the filtration velocity was 0.2 m/s. The filtration efficiency of the PTFE for PM10, PM2.5, and PM1.0 was higher than that of the other three materials, with values of 0.87% to 24.93%, 1.21% to 18.69%, and 0.56% to 16.03%, respectively. PTFE was more effective in capturing particles smaller than 1.0 μm. Within the testing velocity range, the resistance of the filter materials was as follows: glass fiber > PTFE > electret > nanomaterial, and the resistance of the four materials showed a good fitting effect. It is also necessary to match the resistance with the filtration efficiency during use, as well as to study the effectiveness of filter materials in blocking microorganisms and absorbing toxic gases. Overall, PTFE showed the best comprehensive performance, as well as providing data support for the selection of related materials or the synthesis and research of filter materials in the future.

Abstract:Fabrication and performance evaluation of electrospun nanocoated filter media for air filtration applications. Air filtration plays a vital role in the performance and operations of engines, especially for heavy‐duty combat vehicles operating in the desert environment. Conventional cellulose media comprises micro‐fibers exhibiting low filtration efficiency for particles within the range of 0.1 to 0.5 μm (most penetrating particle size, MPPS). Nanofiber coating on cellulose media can increase the filtration efficiency, however, with the penalty of an increase in pressure drop. The features of nylon‐66 nanofibers, such as high mechanical strength, greater thermal stability, and high surface‐to‐volume ratio, will be beneficial for developing nano‐coated filter media. In this study, electrospun nylon‐66 nanofibers were coated over two cellulose‐based filter media and tested on an air filtration test rig that employs a suction‐type blower replicating the realistic condition of a heavy‐duty engine intake. The test rig was fabricated to evaluate the performance of the nano‐coated filter media in terms of pressure drop, filtration efficiency, and quality factor (Q‐factor). The experimental results demonstrated that the nylon‐66 nano‐coated media have higher Q‐factor (in the MPPS range) than the cellulose media due to the increased filtration efficiency compared to the rise in pressure drop. Therefore, such electrospun nylon‐66 nanofiber‐coated air filters can be an alternative to conventional cellulose media.

Abstract:Indoor environment quality is currently a hot research topic. In this study, composite air filter materials were synthesized using different impregnated porous medium materials, and their filtration performance and structural parameters were analyzed. The results showed that composite filter materials' structures changed at the fibers' surfaces when synthesized using different porous medium material layers. The filtration efficiency of composite filter materials synthesized using different porous media reached a maximum 0.8 m/s filtration velocity, and PM10, PM2.5, and PM1.0 increased by 1.67~26.07, 1.19~26.96, and 1.10~21.98%, respectively. The filtration efficiencies of reduced graphene oxide composite for PM10, PM2.5, and PM1.0 were 21.26, 20.22, and 18.50% higher, respectively, than those of carbon black composite. In addition, the filtration efficiency of the composite material synthesized by reducing graphene oxide improved for 0 to 1.0 μm particulates and was more effective by comparison. Microfiber-nanofiber composite filter for high-efficiency and low pressure drop under nano-aerosol loading

Abstract:Nano-aerosols are airborne aerosols in the range of 100 nm. They are present abundantly in both pollutants and viruses, both of which affect human health. Filtering these nano-aerosols leads to high-pressure drop in cabin filters due to their small sizes forming impermeable dust cake, and prior to cake formation the capture efficiency is rather poor with conventional microfiber filters. We have investigated a composite filter with a microfiber layer positioned immediately upstream of a nanofiber layer. Such composite filter provides high efficiency and low-pressure drop during all phases of filtration of nano-aerosols: initial depth filtration, transition, and final cake filtration. The behavior of the composite filter together with various filter benchmarks (single and composite filters of microfiber/nanofiber filters) has been investigated by monitoring the pressure drop, especially during cake filtration. Using the measurements together with Ergun/Kozeny-Carman equation and material balance we come up with a new method to determine the solid volume fraction and permeability of the cake. The grade efficiency for the most penetrating particle is also measured concurrently to define the incipient point to cake formation and provide material balance. Most importantly, for the first time we have confirmed that the cake ultimately forms on the composite filter is due to the cake that originates from the upstream microfiber layer and not from the downstream nanofiber layer. Therefore, the pressure drop for the composite filter can be sustained relatively low throughout the filtration. On the other hand, the aerosol capture efficiency stays very high from start-to-end of filtration, with high initial filtration efficiency courtesy of the nanofiber filter installed downstream of the composite filter. The price to pay is a slightly higher pressure drop for the composite filter in the clean unloaded state, but this is insignificant during aerosol loading as most pressure drop is attributed to that of the cake. For the first time we have introduced, also independently using Buckingham-Pi analysis, a brand new dimensionless parameter, Beta, which measures the equivalent “thickness” of additional cake deposition (in molten form) to the viscous flow resistance “path length” due to the additional cake deposit. A high-capacity filter aimed for heavy aerosol loading should have large Beta that results in low solidosity, high porosity, and high permeability for the cake. In our study, the microfiber-nanofiber composite filter has the highest Beta of nearly 4 and also highest efficiency. Despite high efficiency the single nanofiber filter has much lower Beta of 2, while the single microfiber filter has Beta of 3, yet much lower efficiency, especially at initial filtration. Using the microfiber-nanofiber composite filter design, we can “engineer the cake” deposited on the filter to be more permeable and with least flow resistance during aerosol loading to attain high Beta values. This is an innovative approach to increase the badly needed aerosol storage capacity with low pressure drop for the nanofiber filter while maintaining high efficiency throughout the aerosol loading for extended filtration applications. The highly permeable aerosol cake can also be cleaned by backpulsed-and-backblow readily for filter reuse.

Abstract:The paper presents the problem of the effect of air filter pressure drop on the operating parameters of a modern internal combustion engine with compression ignition. A literature analysis of the results of investigations of the effect of air filter pressure drop on the filling, power and fuel consumption of carburetor and diesel engines with classical injection system was carried out. It was shown that each increase in the air filter pressure drop Δpf by 1 kPa results in an average decrease in engine power by SI 1–1.5% and an increase in specific fuel consumption by about 0.7. For compression ignition engines, the values are 0.4–0.6% decrease in power and 0.3–0.5% increase in specific fuel consumption. The values of the permissible resistance of the air filter flow Δpfdop determined from the condition of 3% decrease in engine power are given, which are at the level of 2.5–4.0 kPa—passenger car engines, 4–7 kPa—truck engines and 9–12 kPa—special purpose vehicles. Possibilities of decreasing the pressure drop of the inlet system, which result in the increase of the engine filling and power, were analyzed. The program and conditions of dynamometer engine tests were worked out in respect to the influence of the air filter pressure drop on the operation parameters of the six-cylinder engine of the swept volume Vss = 15.8 dm3 and power rating of 226 kW. Three technical states of the air filter were modeled by increasing the pressure drop of the filter element. For each technical state of the air filter, measurements and calculations of engine operating parameters, including power, hourly and specific fuel consumption, boost pressure and temperature, were carried out in the speed range n = 1000–2100 rpm. It was shown that the increase in air filter pressure drop causes a decrease in power (9.31%), hourly fuel consumption (7.87%), exhaust temperature (5.1%) and boost pressure (3.11%). At the same time, there is an increase in specific fuel consumption (2.52%) and the smoke of exhaust gases, which does not exceed the permissible values resulting from the technical conditions for admission of vehicles to traffic.

Abstract:The control of airborne contaminants is of great interest in improving air quality, which has deteriorated more and more in recent years due to strong industrial growth. In the last decades, cellulose has been largely proposed as suitable feedstock to build up eco-friendly materials for a wide range of applications. Herein, the issue regarding the use of cellulose to develop air-filtering systems is addressed. The review covers different cellulose-based solutions, ranging from aerogels and foams to membranes and films, and to composites, considering either particulate filtration (PM10, PM2.5, and PM0.3) or gas and water permeation. The proposed solutions were evaluated on the bases of their quality factor (QF), whose high value (at least of 0.01 Pa−1 referred to commercial HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters) guarantees the best compromise between high filtration efficiency (>99%) and low pressure drop (<1 kPa/g). To face this aspect, we first analyzed the different morphological aspects which can improve the final filtration performance, outlining the importance on using nanofibers not only to increase surface area and to modulate porosity in final solutions, but also as reinforcement of filters made of different materials. Besides the description of technological approaches to improve the mechanical filtration, selected examples show the importance of the chemical interaction, promoted by the introduction of active functional groups on cellulose (nano)fibers backbone, to improve filtration efficiency without reducing filter porosity.

Abstract:This paper describes the methodology and test results of diesel particulate filter (DPF) functional testing performed on non-road compression ignition engine installed on test bed. The scope of work included testing of various DPF regeneration strategies, backpressure and balance point tests and emission performance evaluation during a legislative test cycles. The aim of this study was to observe and investigate the influence of exhaust gas parameters on DPF functionality in terms of soot loading, type and duration of the regeneration and emission performance. Under investigation was also the capability of soot burning rate. The DPF sample under test was part of the complete exhaust aftertreatment system (ATS) which consisted of: a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a DPF and a selective catalytic reduction system (SCR). Testing was carried out on a heavy-duty diesel engine installed on a test stand with a dynamic dynamometer and equipped with an emission bench. The test program allowed to assess the engine matching to exhaust aftertreatment system with regard to emissions compliance, in-service operation and necessary engine control unit (ECU) calibration works. The results show the influence of the DPF regeneration strategy on its duration and on the soot mass burn rate. Passive DPF regeneration was a favorable mode of DPF cleaning, due to lack of fuel penalty and lower aging impact on the entire ATS. Optimization of soot flow rate, exhaust gas temperature and the chemistry of the DOC/DPF was further recommended to ensure the long-term durability of the entire system.

Abstract:There are two challenges in the application of dual-layer structured nanofibers composite filters (1) they tend to deteriorate easily during the air cleaning process for reuse; (2) their service time under the condition with high oily aerosol concentration is only half of that under the condition with pure solid particles. In this study, fibrillated fibers are used to fabricate robust dual-layer structured air filters. The influence of the content of fibrillated fibers in the filters on their performance is studied. Their performance is compared with a kind of commercial electrospinning nanofibers composite filters that had similar initial filtration efficiency. They have longer service time than the commercial filters contributing to their longer duration and lower residual pressure drop of the cleaning cycles. They are more robust than the commercial filters. Their dust holding capacity against the diisooctyl sebacate (DEHS)-A2 dust mixture with different DEHS content is 1.6 to 5.1 times that of the commercial filters. This study indicates that fibrillated fibers can be utilized to develop robust and reusable filters with a long service time, especially in harsh conditions with abundant oily aerosols.
