Abstract:The reclaimed water was usually further treated by the constructed wetland (CW) to remove nitrogen and phosphorus before it was discharged to water bodies. In this work, the iron-carbon (Fe-C) substrate and plant-based carbon source were added to the vertical up-flow CWs to enhance the denitrification of reclaimed water. It was found that the removal efficiency of nitrate (NO 3 - -N), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in the Fe-C amended CWs were significantly increased by 20–35%, 10–25%, and 10–35%. Moreover, the plant-based carbon source also contributed to TN and TP removal. The additional substrates also reduced the emission of NO 2 and CH 4 from the CWs. Finally, the microbial community was analyzed to disclose the mechanism involved in the enhanced performance of CWs. The enriched hydrogenotrophic and heterotrophic denitrifiers by the Fe-C substrates and pine bark contributed to the enhanced nitrification.

Novel ecological ditch system for nutrient removal from farmland drainage in plain area: Performance and mechanism

Abstract:The loading of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from agricultural drainage as the non-point sources is a worldwide environmental issue for aquatic ecosystem. However, how to remove these nutrients effectively from agricultural drainage remains a big challenge with increasing cemented ditches for better management. Here, we designed a novel ecological ditch system which integrated an earth ditch and a cemented ditch with iron-loaded biochar in the Chengdu Plain to reduce the loss of N and P from farmland. After a two-year monitoring, the removal efficiency of total N and total P reached 24.9% and 36.1% by the earth ditch and 30.7% and 57.8% by the integrated ditch system, respectively. The water quality was evidently improved after passing through the ditch system with the marked decrease in the concentrations of N and P. Dissolved organic N, nitrate, and particulate P became the dominant fractions of N and P loss. Rainfall soon after fertilization increased the concentrations of N and P in the ditch system and markedly affected their removal efficiency. The iron-loaded biochar effectively removed N and P from the drainage, especially at the high concentrations, which was mainly attributed to its high adsorption of the dissolved N and P fractions and the interception of the particulate nutrients. Our results indicate that the designed ecological ditch system has a high potential for alleviating agricultural non-point source pollution in the plain area and can be extended to other lowland agricultural ecosystems.
Bioaugmentation in Lab Scale Constructed Wetland Microcosms for Treating Polluted River Water and Domestic Wastewater in Northern China

Abstract:Nutrient removal in constructed wetland (CW) microcosms planted with Phragmites and inoculated with a consortium of six denitrifying bacteria was evaluated as a possible treatment for polluted river water (RW) and domestic wastewater (DW) in northern China. Experiments were conducted using the batch-loaded method over a 15 day period. Bio1 (RW with Phragmites inoculated with the bacterial consortium) and Abio1 (DW with Phragmites and bacterial inoculation) showed significant decreases in chemical oxygen demand (CODcr), and increases in total nitrogen (TN), ammonia (NH3–N) and total phosphorus (TP) removal compared with Bio2 and Abio2, i.e., Phragmites without bacteria inoculation. On the 7th day, the removal efficiencies of Bio1 were found to be 75.7% for CODcr, 96.7% for TN, 96.8% for NH3–N and 90.4% for TP in RW microcosms, and 85.7% for CODcr, 75% for TN, 88.6% for NH3–N and 88% for TP in Abio1 DW microcosms. Optimal hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 7 days. We conclude that bioaugmentation in CWs with inoculation repeated every 14 days is a cost-effective measure for nutrient removal of polluted river water.
Enhanced efficiencies on purifying acid mine drainage in constructed wetlands based on synergistic adsorption of attapulgite-soda residue composites and microbial sulfate reduction

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are a promising approach for treating acid mine drainage (AMD). However, the extreme acidity and high loads of heavy metals in AMD can easily lead to the collapse of CWs without proper pre-treatment. Therefore, it is considered essential to maintain efficient and stable performance for AMD treatment in CWs. In this study, pre-prepared attapulgite-soda residue (ASR) composites were used to improve the substrate of CWs. Compared with CWs filled with gravel (CWs-G), the removal efficiencies of sulfate and Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn Cd and Pb in CWs filled with ASR composites (CWs-ASR) were increased by 30% and 10-70%, respectively. These metals were mainly retained in the substrate in stable forms, such as carbonate-, Fe/Mn (oxide)hydroxide-, and sulfide-bound forms. Additionally, higher levels of photosynthetic pigments and antioxidant enzyme activities in plants, along with a richer microbial community, were observed in CWs-ASR than in CWs-G. The application of ASR composites alleviated the adverse effects of AMD stresses on wetland plants and microorganisms. In return, the increased bacteria abundance, particularly SRB genera (e.g., Thermodesulfovibrionia and Desulfobacca), promoted the formation of metal sulfides, enabling the saturated ASR adsorbed with metals to regenerate and continuously capture heavy metals. The synergistic adsorption of ASR composites and microbial sulfate reduction maintained the stable and efficient operation of CWs. This study contributes to the resource utilization of industrial alkaline by-products and promotes the breakthrough of new techniques for low-cost and passive treatment systems such as CWs.

Abstract:In this study, an integrated treatment system was proposed and applied in situ, including detention tank, multistage constructed wetlands (CWs) and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), preventing nutrients flowing into Dianchi Lake, in which the treatment performance of multistage CWs were evaluated principally. Results skillfully realized the bypass purification of upstream river at dry reasons, as well as the effective management and treatment of the collected diffuse pollution at rainy reasons. The purified water flowing into water bodies could satisfy the Grade III of environmental quality standards for surface water in China with the average effluent concentrations of COD, NH4+-N, TN and TP decreased to 10 (51.2-72.7%), 0.5 (67.2-83.0%), 1.0 (71.2-79.6%) and 0.15 (72.3-89.4%) mg L-1, respectively. High-throughput sequencing results indicated that the application of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate-cohyroxyvelate-sawdust (PS) blends could enrich norank_f_Anaerolineaceae (7.95%) and Bradyrhizobium (10.2%), which were distinct from the dominant genera of Pleurocapsa (13.0%) in gravel-based CWs. Functional genes and metabolism analysis uncovered that the heterotrophic denitrification was the main pathway of nitrogen removal with the abundance of genes encoding TCA cycle, glycolysis and denitrification process up-regulated. In addition, molecular ecological network (MEN) analysis suggested the denitrification genes were positively correlated with the predominant microbes in PS-based CWs, favorable for denitrifiers to transfer and utilize electron donors during denitrification process. This study proved that the developed PS blends as carbon supplies in CWs and the proposed integrated treatment system are effective methods for watershed management, providing valuable reference to low-pollution wastewater treatment in practical engineering projects.

Abstract:The effect of nitrogen deficiency on activated sludge bulking was studied specially in some experiments carried on a sequencing batch reactor fed with beer wastewater in this paper. The experimental results showed that the sludge settled properly at a influent BOD/N value of 100/4. When the value of BOD/N was 100/3 and 100/2 respectively, non-filamentous activated sludge bulking caused by an excessive growth of viscous Zoogloea with high moisture content occurred. When the value of influent BOD/N was 100/0.94, more serious non-filamentous bulking occurred. Furthermore, the effect of nitrogen deficiency on the nitrogen sources and phosphorus sources utilization rate and the COD removal rate was studied in the experiments.
Enhanced removal mechanism of iron carbon micro-electrolysis constructed wetland on C, N, and P in salty permitted effluent of wastewater treatment plant

Abstract:In this study, the combination of a constructed wetland (CW) with iron-carbon (Fe-C) system was used to enhance the simultaneous removal of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in salty permitted effluent of wastewater treatment plant (SPE-WTP). The removal mechanism of Fe-C micro-electrolysis CWs with different salinity (0.027, 0.308, and 0.511%) for treating SPE-WTP was investigated, including chemical oxygen demand (COD), phosphorus and nitrogen removal, the mass balance, as well as the changes in the microbial community structure. The results showed the salinity has a certain influence on the contaminant removals, and can enhance nitrogen removal under certain conditions. When the salinity increased from 0.308% to 0.511%, the removal of COD decreased from 68.20% to 62.69%, whereas the removal of total nitrogen (TN) increased from 72.02% to 81.21% in the ICCW-p system (including P. australis as the plant and gravel doped with 3% iron-carbon as the matrix). Microbial degradation, including the electrochemical effect (the degradation by iron-carbon micro-electrolysis) was the main N removal pathway in the ICCW-p system. The ICCW-p system always achieved higher removal rates (such as 81.21% TN and 62.69% COD removals at 0.511% salinity) than that in ICCW-n system (without plants and gravel doped with 3% iron-carbon as the matrix, 63.76% TN and 56.31% COD removals, respectively) and CW-n (without plants and gravel as the matrix, 14.90% TN and 22.39% COD removals, respectively). In addition, high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that high salinity increased the abundance of N-removing bacteria in the ICCW-p system. Furthermore, with the introduction of iron-carbon in CWs, the removal methods in ICCW-p were diverse, which has enough ability to resist the impact of salinity. Fe electrolysis produced different valence states that acted as carriers for electron transport and accelerated the efficiency of biological and chemical reactions, which enhanced the simultaneous removal of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus.

Enhancing total nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands: A Comparative study of iron ore and biochar amendments

Abstract:Efficient nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands (CWs) remains challenging when treating agricultural runoff with a low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N). However, using biochar, iron ore, and FeCl3-modified biochar (Fe-BC) as amendments could potentially improve total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency in CWs, but the underlying mechanisms associated with adding these substrates are unclear. In this study, five CWs: quartz sand constructed wetland (Control), biochar constructed wetland, Fe-BC constructed wetland, iron ore constructed wetland, and iron ore + biochar constructed wetland, were built to compare their treatment performance. The rhizosphere microbial community compositions and their co-occurrence networks were analyzed to reveal the underlying mechanisms driving their treatment performance. The results showed that iron ore was the most efficient amendment, although all treatments increased TN removal efficiency in the CWs. Ammonia-oxidizing, heterotrophic denitrifying, nitrate-dependent anaerobic ferrous oxidizing (NAFO), and Feammox bacteria abundance was higher in the iron ore system and led to the simultaneous removal of NH4+-N, NO3--N, and NO2--N. Visual representations of the co-occurrence networks further revealed that there was an increase in cooperative mutualism (the high proportion of positive links) and more complex interactions among genera related to the nitrogen and iron cycle (especially ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, heterotrophic denitrifying bacteria, NAFO bacteria, and Feammox bacteria) in the iron ore system, which ultimately contributed to the highest TN removal efficiency. This study provides critical insights into how different iron ore or biochar substrates could be used to treat agricultural runoff in CWs.
Effectiveness of a novel composite filler to enhance phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands

Abstract:Improving the adsorption performance of wetland fillers is of great significance for enhancing pollutant removal in constructed wetlands. Currently, limited by complex preparation processes and high costs, large numbers of high adsorption fillers studied in lab are difficult to be applied in practical engineering. In this study, a newly low-cost and efficient phosphorus removal composite wetland filler (CFB) is prepared by using industrial and agriculture waste (steel slag and oyster shells) and natural ore (volcanic rock) as raw materials. The results show that phosphorus removal efficiency was largely enhanced by synergistic effects of steel slag, oyster shells, and volcanic rock, and it was mainly influenced by the proportion of each component of CFB. Based on the fitting of the classical isothermal equation, the adsorption capacity of CFB is 18.339 mg/g. The adsorption of phosphorus by CFB is endothermic and spontaneous, and there are heterogeneous surfaces and multi-layer adsorption processes, as well as pH value and temperature, are free from the influence on CFB phosphorus removal. During the practical wastewater application experiments, the phosphorus removal rate of the CFB-filled constructed wetland apparatus (CW-A) can reach 94.89% and is free from the influence on the removal of other pollutants (COD, TN, and NH 3 -N) by the system. Overall, the prepared CFB is of excellent decontamination effect, an extremely simple preparation process, low cost, and sound practical engineering application potential, providing new ideas and approaches for enhancing the phosphorus removal capacity and waste resource utilization of constructed wetland systems.

Abstract:Aiming at the poor N and P removal performance in the effluent of wastewater treatment plants by constructed wetlands (CWs), aluminum sludge (AS) from water supply plants was used to prepare iron-modified aluminum sludge (IAS), and tidal flow constructed wetlands (TFCWs) using IAS as substrates were constructed. By means of high-throughput sequencing, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), etc., the removal mechanism of N and P in the system and fate analysis of key elements were also interpreted. Results showed that an interlayer structure beneficial to adsorbing pollutants was formed in the IAS, due to the iron scraps entering into the molecular layers of AS. The removal rates of TP and TN by IAS-TFCWs reached 95 % and 47 %, respectively, when the flooding/resting time (F/R) and C/N were 6 h/2 h and 6. During the three-year operation of the IAS-TFCWs, the effluent concentrations of COD Cr , NH 4 + -N, and TP could comply with Class IV Standard of "Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water" (GB3838-2002). The mechanism analysis showed that the N removal was effectuated through Fe 2+ as the electron donor of Fe(II)-driven the autotrophic denitrifying bacteria to reduce nitrate, while the P removal mainly depended on the adsorption reaction between FeOOH in IAS and phosphate. In conclusion, the stable Fe-N cycle in the IAS-TFCWs achieved simultaneous and efficient N and P removal.

Abstract:Nitrate (NO3 −-N) is ubiquitously present in groundwater, constituting a growing threat to human health. In this study, iron-scrap and pyrite-based constructed wetlands (CWs) were constructed to investigate the treatment performance and removal mechanisms in purifying nitrate-contaminated groundwater. Results showed that the NO3 −-N removal efficiency of iron-scrap-based CWs (87.1%) was higher than that of pyrite-based CWs (59.5%), and the higher N2O emission (28.46 μg/(m2•h)) was also obtained in CW with iron-scrap. Nevertheless, total nitrogen removal did not exhibit a significant difference between two CWs due to the accumulation of ammonium nitrogen (NH4 +-N) in iron-scrap-based CWs. Additionally, sulfate was produced in CW with pyrite, as a by-product, and caused oxidative stress damage to plants. Metagenomic analysis showed that the addition of iron-scrap could increase microbial diversity and enrich autotrophs denitrifies (e.g., Ferritrophicum), which explained the higher NO3 −-N removal reasonably. Additionally, the abundance of dissimilatory nitrate reduction bacterium was enhanced in iron-scrap-based CW, explaining the NH₄⁺-N accumulation. Further metabolic analysis confirmed the occurrence of Fe cycle in CW with iron-scrap, and functional genes related to NO3 −-N removal and TCA cycle were up-regulated, offering a rationale for the improved NO3 −-N removal in CW with iron-scrap. This study offers comprehensive insights into the NO3 −-N removal and its mechanism through iron mediated CWs in controlling groundwater pollution.

Abstract:Sanjiang Plain is intensively used for rice production, and ditch drainage diffuse pollution prevention is crucial. Groundwater, rich in Fe ions, is the main source of irrigation water in this region. In this study, pyrite and zero-valent iron (ZVI) (sponge iron and iron scraps) were used as substrates to identify the synergistic influence of exogenous Fe2+ addition and solid iron substrates on pollutant removal in constructed wetlands. Based on the results, iron substrates hardly improved the ammonia removal, mainly because of the physical structure and oxidation activity. At a hydraulic retention time longer than 8 h, the pollution removal efficiency in the zero-valent iron (ZVI) substrate treatment increased significantly, and the removal of nitrate (NO3 --N) and total phosphorus (TP) in the iron scrap substrate treatment reached about 60% and 70%, respectively. The high-throughput sequencing results showed a significant increase in the abundance of microorganisms involved in denitrification and phosphate accumulation in biofilms on ZVI substrates. The highest diversities of such microorganisms in biofilms on iron scraps were found for denitrifying bacteria (Pseudomonas), nitrate-reducing Fe (II)-oxidizing bacteria (Acidovorax), and Dechloromonas with autotrophic denitrification and phosphate accumulation, with a 43% cumulative abundance. Dechloromonas dominated in the iron sponge substrate treatment. The highest relative abundance of Acidovorax was found in the mixed iron substrate (pyrite, sponge iron, and iron scraps) treatment. The addition of ZVI substrate significantly improved the removal of NO3 --N and TP and reduced the hydraulic retention time through the continuous release of Fe2+ and the promotion of microbial growth. When designing constructed wetlands for treating paddy field drainage, the appropriate addition of iron scrap substrates is recommended to enhance the pollutant removal efficiency and shock load resistance of CWs.
Enhanced nutrients removal from low C/N ratio rural sewage by embedding heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria and activated alumina in a tidal flow constructed wetland

Abstract:Rural sewage treatment facilitates nitrogen and phosphorus removal yet can be costly. To address this challenge, a cost-effective embedding material mainly consisting of heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria, activated alumina (AA), and a solid carbon source (HPMC) was applied to a tidal flow constructed wetlands (TFCWs); aimed at stable nitrogen and phosphorus removal under low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratios. The TFCWs could be shortened to 16 d of startup duration time compared with the control group; and improved the ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies to 98 %, 93 %, and 68 %, respectively. Also, effluent NH4+-N, TN, and TP in the enhanced TFCWs could be stable at 0.52 ± 0.18, 1.23 ± 0.45, and 0.75 ± 0.25 mg/L, respectively. Microbial community analysis revealed that AA and HPMC were enriched Pseudomonas sp., which potentially accelerated the NH4+-N assimilation pathway and phosphate biological removal. Embedding materials-TFCWs can provide new solutions for integrated rural sewage technology.
Enhanced removal of organic, nutrients, and PFCs in the iron-carbon micro-electrolysis constructed wetlands: Mechanism and iron cycle

Abstract:The poor removal capacity of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) on perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) results in the desirability of advanced treatment. Therefore, this study mainly discusses the enhanced removal mechanism of iron-carbon constructed wetlands on chemical oxygen demand (COD), phosphorus, nitrogen, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS). The results showed that the removal efficiencies of most pollutants increased with the extension of hydraulic retention time (HRT) (1d, 2d, 3d). During the 3-day HRT, the average removal efficiencies in F1 (iron-carbon wetland, 100 μg/L PFCs) for COD, total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), PFOA, and PFBS were 61.88 %, 67.92 %, 58.26 %, 78.12 %, and 80.60 %, respectively. Compared with C1 (common gravel wetland, 100 μg/L PFCs), the corresponding removal efficiencies increased by 4.68 %, 24.53 %, 10.07 %, 16.52 %, and 13.16 %, respectively. However, the removal effect of F2 (iron-carbon wetland, 200 μg/L PFCs) became worse due to the high concentration of PFCs. Further study found that the efficient removal of phosphorus in F1 was the precipitation and coagulation of Fe(III) and Fe(II). Meanwhile, the removal of nitrogen mainly relied on autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification. Simultaneously, the combination with Feammox (the process of anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to iron reduction) and other pathways promoted nitrogen removal and iron cycling in F1. Further mass balance calculation of PFOA and PFBS in iron-carbon wetland found that among all matrixes (coarse sand, gravel, and iron-carbon), the contribution rate of iron-carbon to the removal PFCs was the highest. In addition, the enrichment of microorganisms related to Fe(II)-dependent autotrophic denitrification and the cultivation of iron-reducing bacteria reconfirmed the iron cycle.

Abstract:Gravel-based subsurface-flow constructed wetlands (CWs) amended with a walnut shell (WS) substrate were established to treat synthetic acid mine drainage (AMD) in this study, and artificial domestic wastewater (DW) and plant litter broth (PLB) were supplemented to enhance the performance. The CW media rapidly reached adsorption saturation with respect to metals (except Fe and Cr) without an external carbon source, while the addition of DW and PLB stimulated sulfate reduction activity and achieved efficient biogenic metal removal, primarily by the formation of hydroxide and sulfide precipitates and concomitant co-precipitation. The WS-amended CWs performed notably better than the control systems, not only in sequestering more metals and rapidly establishing favourable environments for biogenic metal abatement but also in supporting better growth of plants and functional microbes. The external organic carbon input greatly shaped the bacterial community compositions in the CWs, with substantial increases in the proportions of core functional populations involved in AMD biotreatment. Cooperation among Cellulomonas, Propioniciclava and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), dominated by Desulfobulbus and Desulfatirhabdium, was the primary biogenic mechanism of AMD remediation in the CWs. Cellulosic waste-amended CWs with DW and PLB addition offer a promising eco-technology for AMD remediation.

Abstract:Abstract Constructed wetlands (CWs) are effective as an advanced treatment process for the treated effluent of municipal wastewater plants. An appropriate substrate, suitable macrophytes, and proper operation are crucial for pollutant abatement. In this research, three subsurface flow CWs with various substrates were investigated. Pollutants abatement efficiency under various operational schemes were analyzed. The results showed that the satisfactory hydraulic loading rate was 0.25 m3/(m2·d). When the C/N ratio of influent was adjusted to 5.87 by adding a carbon source, the denitrification and dephosphorization efficiency would be improved, with 7–8 mg/L for total nitrogen (TN) and 0.4 mg/L for total phosphorus (TP) in the effluent, which can achieve the Class 1A Discharge Standard for discharge to natural waterways in China. A greater depth of submersion for the substrate layer resulted in a more conducive environment for the abatement of nitrogen substances. However, a 40-cm depth of submersion in CWs results in better removal efficiency of TN and TP. A plastic ring substrate (PRS) contains biological enzyme promoter formula, which was conducive to nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. The biofilm affinity and coordination with plants made the PRS more effective than the other two substrates, especially for NO3–-N and TN abatement efficiency.

Abstract:The urgent need to achieve sustainable development goals and address global climate change calls for innovative solutions in advanced low-carbon water treatment technologies. In this study, constructed wetlands (CWs), a sustainable and multifunctional wastewater treatment technology known for its low cost and energy efficiency, was focused. It was presented a novel approach that employs a sulfur-siderite composite filler in the constructed wetland (SSCF-CW), which demonstrated remarkable removal efficiencies for total phosphorus (TP) ranging from 81.14 % to 98.87 %, nitrate nitrogen (NO3 −-N) ranging from 85.23 % to 99.82 %, and total nitrogen (TN) ranging from 91.65 % to 97.01 % in low C/N wastewater treatment. The electron resupply mode of the sulfur and iron cycles plays a pivotal role in enhancing denitrification efficiency. Furthermore, SSCF enhances the resilience of SSCF-CW against shock loadings, providing increased stability and performance with TN removal rate of 2.96 ∼ 3.42 g N·m−3·d−1 while HRT decreased from 48 h to 10 h. Notably, the majority of NO3 −-N elimination occurs within the SSCF layer, where Thiobacillus species dominate the denitrification process in SSCF-CW. The introduction of SSCF promotes carbon fixation with the higher relative abundance of DLD gene (5.52 %) in SSCF-CW, benefiting microbial growth and accelerating electron transfer process. Co-precipitation and adsorption pathways in the SSCF layer primarily contribute to TP removal, while iron leaching from SSCF facilitates the formation of iron plaque on roots, establishing an iron reservoir and ensuring bioavailability. These findings highlight the significant potential of SSCF in constructed wetland systems, offering a cost-effective and sustainable low-carbon technology for municipal wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Elevated phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations in agricultural drainage are responsible for widespread declines in water quality across freshwater and marine receiving environments worldwide. Removal of P at source is particularly important because its tight biogeochemical cycling with iron (Fe), leads to preferential P −retention (over N) across the aquatic continuum, particularly in lake basins. This paper introduces new Fe−C−based composites (Fe(III)oxide/akaganite) designed for use in edge-of-field mitigations such as denitrifying bioreactors, with the goal of intercepting and retaining P on−farm. Our Fe−functionalised media had a net positive charge in the favourable range for P adsorption under the typical pH conditions encountered in denitrifying bioreactors (pH 5.5 − 6). Although functionalized wood (Fe-WC) had significantly higher P adsorption capacity than functionalised biochar (Fe-PyOM), 65.8 mg g -1 and 31.4 mg g -1 , respectively; this was of comparable magnitude to powdered akaganite (107 mg g -1 ), despite large differences in particle size. Batch and column adsorption experiments indicate a multi−layer adsorption mechanism for P removal on Fe−PyOM and Fe−WC, which was further investigated using XPS, confirming dominant electrostatic P binding by Fe-functionalised media below pH 6, but an increasing importance of ligand exchange (Fe-O-P) at pH 8, particularly for Fe-PyOM. Based on the prevailing geochemistry of influent solutions to DBRs (pe ⁓ -8, pH ⁓ 6), we suggest that Fe−PyOM may be able to continuously adsorb P over a long timespans without requiring replenishment, due to its higher surface area, stability, and multiple P binding mechanisms.

Abstract:Contaminants from wastewater of aquaculture are increasing the risks of red tides in coastal areas. Such types of contaminants are difficult to remove by using conventional biological and ecological treatment methods because of the relatively low C/N ratios and the high salinity in coastal water ambience. Fe is considered a key element in natural chemical cycling and promotes the growth of animals and plants as well. The cycling of Fe ion combined with carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus stimulates bacterial growth. As a result, it acts as a microbial carbon pump in coastal areas, such as natural wetlands, which have been activated and adapted to be salinity resistant and insufficient energy supply. Along these lines, in this work, constructed wetlands (CWs) with high ecological benefits and low cost of maintenance were used to treat aquaculture wastewater. The impact of Fe ion recycling on multiple contaminants was also systematically investigated. The two types of Fe dosage were pure ferrous ions and a mixture of iron powder and ferrous ions. After the application of a 3-day treatment, the dosage of iron powder/ferric ions (1:1 m/m) at a concentration of 15 mg L-1 showed a better effect, where the total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand removal rates were increased by 2.95%, 2.16%, and 9.76%, respectively. From the microbial analysis, it was indicated that Fe ion affected the abundance and functions of the microbial communities in the CWs. The significant enrichment of Proteobacteria promoted the removal of multiple contaminants under saline stress and fixed carbon, and affected the whole microbe distribution and diversity in CWs. The implementation of such an environmentally friendly and economical approach arises as a promising candidate for the efficient removal of multiple contaminants from aquacultural wastewater in coastal zones.
