Abstract:The electron transport layer (ETL) with excellent charge extraction and transport ability plays a crucial role in high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we propose a approach to modify SnO2 ETL by introducing perovskite oxide BiFeO3 nanoparticles into SnO2 film to construct SnO2-BiFeO3 nano-heterostructure. The formation of SnO2-BiFeO3 nano-heterostructure within the SnO2 ETL introduces an additional built-in potential directed from SnO2 to BiFeO3, which provides an additional driven force for the charge carriers transfer. As a result, the extraction rate of electrons from the perovskite layer to the SnO2-BiFeO3 ETLs is significantly improved. In addition, an excellent ETL/perovskite interface with more favorable band alignment and fewer defects is achieved via the incorporation of BiFeO3 nanoparticles. By employing SnO2-BiFeO3 ETLs in CsPbI3 PSCs, we obtained PSC with a higher PCE of 17.35%, compared to 14.93% for the reference one. This result not only validates the effectiveness of BiFeO3 in improving the performance of SnO2-based PSCs but also highlights its potential application for other perovskite devices.
Rational Design of A Chemical Bath Deposition Based Tin Oxide Electron Transport Layer for Perovskite Photovoltaics

Abstract:Chemical bath deposition is widely used to deposit SnOx as an electron transport layer in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The conventional recipe uses thioglycolic acid (TGA) to facilitate attachments of SnOx particles onto the substrate. However, nonvolatile TGA has been reported to harm the operational stability of PSCs. In this work, we introduced a volatile oxalic acid (OA) as an alternative to TGA. OA, a dicarboxylic acid, functions as a chemical linker for the nucleation and attachment of particles to the substrate in the chemical bath. Moreover, OA can be readily removed through thermal annealing followed by a mild H2O2 treatment, as shown by FTIR measurements. Synergistically, the mild H2O2 treatment selectively oxidizes the surface of the SnOx layer, minimizing nonradiative interface carrier recombination. EELS (electron‐energy‐loss‐spectroscopy) confirms that the SnOx surface is dominated by Sn4+, while the bulk is a mixture of Sn2+ and Sn4+. This rational design of a CBD SnOx layer leads to devices with T85∼1,500 h, a significant improvement over the TGA‐based device with T80∼250 h. Our champion device reached a power conversion efficiency of 24.6%. This work offers a rationale for optimizing the complex parameter space of CBD SnOx to achieve efficient and stable PSCs. Abstract:As electron transport layers (ETLs) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), Tin oxide (SnO2) possess high carrier mobilities with appropriate energy band alignment and high optical transmittance. Herein, SnO2 ETLs were fabricated by intermediate‐controlled chemical bath deposition (IC‐CBD) at ultralow temperature, where the chelating agent effectively altered the nucleation and growth process. Compared with conventional chemical bath deposition (CBD), SnO2 ETLs fabricated by IC‐CBD had lower defects, smooth surface, good crystallinity, and remarkable interfacial contact with perovskite, resulting in good quality of perovskite, high photovoltaic performance (23.17%), and enhanced stability of devices.

Abstract:In this work, the SnO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 hybrid electron transport layer (ETL) was prepared by incorporating two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 -MXene into SnO 2 and appropriate ultraviolet (UV) ozone treatment. The synergistic effect of Ti 3 C 2 introduction and UV ozone treatment on the charge transport capacity of SnO 2 ETL, interface properties of ETL/perovskite, perovskite morphology, and device performance was systematically investigated. The results show that the introduction of Ti 3 C 2 does not affect the morphology and transmittance of SnO 2 ETL. The perovskite films based on SnO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 are not only dense, but also have smaller surface roughness, more uniform, and larger grain size, even penetrating the entire perovskite film. The surface oxidation of Ti 3 C 2 induced by UV-ozone treatment enhanced the charge transport capacity of ETL. The electron extraction and charge transfer at the interface between SnO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 ETL and perovskite are higher, and carrier recombination is effectively suppressed. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on SnO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 ETL have larger charge recombination impedance and higher electron mobility, mainly due to enhanced ETL charge transport and optimization of interface properties. The short-circuit current ( J sc) and filling factor (FF) of PSCs are increased by 5% and 7% respectively, delivering a champion device with a relatively high FF of 79.38% and high power conversion efficiency of 19.52%, as well as good stability. Thus, this study provides a simple and effective method for the preparation of efficient and repeatable PSCs and paves the way for the industrialization of PSCs to a certain extent.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted considerable interest owing to their low processing costs and high efficiency. A crucial component of these devices is the electron transport layer (ETL), which plays a key role in extracting and transmitting light-induced electrons, modifying interfaces, and adjusting surface energy levels. This minimizes charge recombination in PSCs, a critical factor in their performance. Among the various ETL materials, titanium dioxide (TiO2) and tin dioxide (SnO2) stand out due to their excellent electron mobility, suitable band alignment, high transparency, and stability. TiO2 is widely used because of its appropriate conduction band position, easy fabrication, and favorable charge extraction properties. SnO2, on the other hand, offers higher electron mobility, better stability under UV illumination, and lower processing temperatures, making it a promising alternative. This paper summarizes the latest advancements in the research of electron transport materials, including material selection and a discussion of electron collection. Additionally, it examines doping techniques that enhance electron mobility and surface modification technologies that improve interface quality and reduce recombination. The impact of these parameters on the performance and passivation behavior of PSCs is also examined. Technological advancements in the ETL, especially those involving TiO2 and SnO2, are currently a prominent research direction for achieving high-efficiency PSCs. This review covers the current state and future directions in ETL research for PSCs, highlighting the crucial role of TiO2 and SnO2 in enhancing device performance.

Abstract:AbstractExtraordinary photovoltaic performance and intriguing optoelectronic properties of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have aroused enormous interest from both academic research and photovoltaic (PV) industry. In order to bring PSC technology from laboratory to market, material stability, device flexibility, and scalability are important issues to address for vast production. Nevertheless, PSCs are still primarily prepared by solution methods which limit film scalability, while high-temperature processing of metal oxide electron transport layer (ETL) makes PSCs costly and incompatible with flexible substrates. Here, we demonstrate rarely-reported room-temperature radio frequency (RF) sputtered SnO2 as a promising ETL with suitable band structure, high transmittance, and excellent stability to replace its solution-processed counterpart. Power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 12.82% and 5.88% have been achieved on rigid glass substrate and flexible PEN substrate respectively. The former device retained 93% of its initial PCE after 192-hour exposure in dry air while the latter device maintained over 90% of its initial PCE after 100 consecutive bending cycles. The result is a solid stepping stone toward future PSC all-vapor-deposition fabrication which is being widely used in the PV industry now.

Abstract:SnO2 prepared by chemical bath deposition (CBD) is among the most promising electron transport layers for enabling high efficiency, large area perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the uneven surface coverage of SnO2 and the presence of defects in the film and/or at the SnO2/perovskite interface significantly affect the device performance. Herein, a multifunctional molecule of phosphorylcholine chloride (CP) is introduced to modulate the CBD growth of SnO2 and suppress the generation of defects. The agglomeration of SnO2 nanoparticles is hindered due to the electrostatic repulsion effect, leading to the formation of dense and conformal films with improved optical transmittance and electrical conductivity. Moreover, the defects both in SnO2 and at the interface of SnO2/perovskite are successfully passivated and the energy band structure is well regulated, contributing to the suppression of nonradiative recombination and the improvement of electron transport. As a result, a remarkably high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.04% is attained for PSCs processed in air ambient. The unencapsulated devices exhibit improved long-term stability, maintaining over 80% of their initial PCE after storing in air ambient for 1500 h or under one-sun illumination for 600 h.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are anticipated to spearhead the revolution in solar energy technology. Engineering the electron transporting layer (ETL)/perovskite heterointerface is known to be a key point for further high-performance PSCs because it determines the main charge transporting and energy losses. However, the most advanced SnO2 colloidal precursors tend to exhibit agglomeration and structural flaws, thereby deteriorating the morphology and electronic mass of the obtained ETL. Here, we polished the microstructure of the SnO2 surface by self-assembling SnO2@Sn2P2O7 quantum dots (SPOS), which is synthesized by the chemical reaction between hypophosphoric acid (H3PO2) and SnO2. The Sn2P2O7 was synthesized on the SnO2 surface, terminating the surface dangling bonds and resulting in steady SPOS quantum dots with smooth microstructure. The SPOS ETL with good optical and electrical properties as well as matched bandgap alignment with perovskite, yielding an improved power conversion efficiency of 23.35% for PSCs. Moreover, due to the suppression of defect-induced deprotonation reactions, the SPOS-PSCs exhibit favorablelongstability than the SnO2-PSCs. This work demonstrates that the surface reconstruction of the ETL is crucial for enhancing the power conversion efficiency and stability of PSCs.
Preparation of TiO2/SnO2 Electron Transport Layer for Performance Enhancement of All-Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells Using Electron Beam Evaporation at Low Temperature

Abstract:SnO2 has attracted much attention due to its low-temperature synthesis (ca. 140 °C), high electron mobility, and low-cost manufacturing. However, lattice mismatch and oxygen vacancies at the SnO2/CsPbI3−xBrx interface generally lead to undesirable nonradiative recombination in optoelectronic devices. The traditional TiO2 used as the electron transport layer (ETL) for all-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) requires high-temperature sintering and crystallization, which are not suitable for the promising flexible PSCs and tandem solar cells, raising concerns about surface defects and device uniformity. To address these challenges, we present a bilayer ETL consisting of a SnO2 layer using electron beam evaporation and a TiO2 layer through the hydrothermal method, resulting in an enhanced performance of the perovskite solar cell. The bilayer device exhibits an improved power conversion efficiency of 11.48% compared to the single-layer device (8.09%). The average fill factor of the bilayer electron transport layer is approximately 15% higher compared to the single-layer electron transport layer. Through a systematic investigation of the use of ETL for CsPb3−xBrx PSCs on optical and electronic properties, we demonstrate that the SnO2/TiO2 is an efficient bilayer ETL for PSCs as it significantly enhances the charge extraction capability, suppresses carrier recombination at the ETL/perovskite interface, facilitates efficient photogenerated carrier separation and transport, and provides high current density and reduced hysteresis.

Abstract:Lanthanide element Sm with a unique electronic structure has been introduced into SnO2 electron transport layer (ETL), passivating oxygen vacancy defects, optimizing energetic alignment, and promoting perovskite crystallization. The synergistic optimization effect of Sm doping has been demonstrated, leading to perovskite crystallization and enhanced interfacial charge transport. This study pioneers Sm3+ doping in SnO2 ETL, achieving 24.10% perovskite solar cells efficiency. Tin oxide (SnO2) has demonstrated significant potential as an electron transport layer (ETL) owing to its low‐temperature processing in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the poor energy‐level alignment and the presence of interface defects between the SnO2 and perovskite layer aggravate the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the PSCs. Herein, heterovalent samarium cation (Sm3+) is deliberately doped into SnO2, optimizing the energy‐level alignment between SnO2 and the perovskite layer, and effectively passivating the oxygen vacancy defects on the surface of SnO2. Experimental and theoretical conclusions reveal that Sm‐doping successfully passivates the defects in the ETL and improves the perovskite crystal quality, thereby reducing interface charge recombination, and enhancing electron extraction from perovskite to the SnO2 layer. Consequently, the optimized Sm‐doped SnO2‐based PSCs achieve a PCE of 24.10% with a VOC of 1.174 V, negligible hysteresis, and improved durability under ambient conditions.

Non-toxic and rapid chemical bath deposition for SnO2 electron transporting layers in perovskite solar cells

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells are a promising new solar technology with efficiencies surpassing polycrystalline silicon solar cell technology. For the n-i-p perovskite solar cells, tin oxide is typically used as the electron transport layer. One typical deposition method is chemical bath deposition. However, the drawbacks are toxic precursors and the slow reaction driven by dissolved oxygen forming SnO2 x. Here, we present a tin oxide chemical bath deposition starting from non-toxic sodium stannate solutions. Within 6 minutes of reaction time, a 9 nm thick amorphous Sn(IV)-oxide film is grown yielding solar cells with power conversion efficiencies of at least 23.2%. Surprisingly, the sole use of Sn(IV) precursors contradicts the previous Sn(II) doping assumption required for n-doping & high electric conductivity, and, unexpectedly, amorphous tin oxide films are as suitable for charge transport layers as their crystalline counterparts. The synthesis method is transferrable to other substrates (ITO, glass) and other thin-film metal oxide coatings (MoOx, SiO2) and beneficial for devices such as solar cells, photodetectors, light emitting diodes, and heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:The electron transport layer (ETL) is a significant functional layer for enhancing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and the environmental stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Tin dioxide (SnO 2 ), which has high conductivity and well-matched energy levels with perovskite films, is widely used as one of the most effective ETLs for PSCs. However, it is still a challenge to reduce the energy loss of the SnO 2 /perovskite interface, which is caused by the SnO 2 quantum dots agglomeration due to its disordered surface charge and the SnO 2 /perovskite interface defects formed during their low-temperature processing. To address this issue, we herein synthesized zirconium acetate stabilized SnO 2 (ZAS) quantum dots to terminate the Sn 4+ at the SnO 2 surface. This suppressed SnO 2 agglomeration and formed a uniform film with enhanced conductivity, thereby reducing the SnO 2 /perovskite interface non-radiative recombination. Furthermore, the C=O and Zr 4+ of ZAS could passivate the Pb 2+ dangling bonds and uncoordinated I − of the perovskite buried surface, respectively. The energy level of the ZAS ETL showed a favorable match with MAPbI 3 , accelerating carrier transport and reducing energy loss. As a result, the optimized ZAS-based device achieved an outstanding PCE of 21.13 % and maintained 90 % of its initial PCE under ambient conditions (25 °C, 30–35 % humidity) after 1000 h. This study not only developed a novel ZAS ETL but also inspired us to focus on modifying the surface properties of single SnO 2 quantum dots rather than that of the SnO 2 film.

High‐Throughput Deposition of Recyclable SnO2 Electrodes toward Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:A method for high‐throughput preparation of chemical bath deposited SnO2 has been developed through incorporating a concentrated tin source stabilized by the ethanol ligand, and doping with antimony. Consequently, the deposition time of SnO2 can be appreciably reduced from 3–4 h to only 5 min while maintaining 95% of the maximum efficiency when assembled in perovskite solar cells. Chemical bath deposited (CBD) SnO2 is one of the most prevailing electron transport layers for realizing high‐efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs) so far. However, the state‐of‐the‐art CBD SnO2 process is time‐consuming, contradictory to its prospect in industrialization. Herein, a simplified yet efficient method is developed for the fast deposition of SnO2 electrodes by incorporating a concentrated Sn source stabilized by the ethanol ligand with antimony (Sb) doping. The higher concentration of Sn source promotes the deposition rate, and Sb doping improves the hole‐blocking capability of the CBD SnO2 layer so that its target thickness can be reduced to further save the deposition time. As a result, the deposition time can be appreciably reduced from 3–4 h to only 5 min while maintaining 95% of the maximum efficiency, indicating the power of the method toward high‐throughput production of efficient PSCs. Additionally, the CBD SnO2 substrates are recyclable after removing the upper layers of complete PSCs, and the refurbished PSCs can maintain ≈98% of their initial efficiency after three recycling‐and‐fabrication processes.

Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) is one of the most promising electron transport layers (ETL) for the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to its excellent electron mobility and high transparency, along with its low processing temperature. However, the inherent defects, nonuniform coating and poor surface morphology of SnO2 may be detrimental to the physicochemical properties such as conductivity and electron mobility at the interface, lead to a decrease in the open‐circuit voltage (VOC) and a reduction in device stability. In this study, we present a method that combines atomic layer deposition (ALD) and chemical bath deposition (CBD) techniques to solve these issues. The presence of bilayer ETLs enhances the coverage of the SnO2 film and optimize the morphology of the buried surface of perovskite, which not only facilitates the interfacial charge transfer but also suppresses recombination reactions. As a result, a significant increase in VOC and efficiency has been achieved compared to devices with only a single layer. Additionally, the large‐area perovskite solar module (active area: 48.0 cm2) achieves a champion efficiency of 17.9%. The PSCs retain more than 93% of their initial efficiency after 700 hours of continuous operation under 1‐sun illumination and 25 oC. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Planar halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have undergone rapid development in last decade due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. An electron transport layer (ETL) with high electron mobility is crucial to achieve high power conversion efficiency (PCE). TiO2 is one of the most common ETLs in n-i-p planar PSCs. But the low 'electron mobility and high annealing temperature of TiO2 hamper the device performance and applications. In2O3 has a higher electron mobility and wider bandgap compared with TiO2 ETL. Herein, we report a low-temperature combustion synthesized In2O3 as ETL for PSCs. The electron mobilities of In2O3 films are investigated by the thin film transistors (TFTs) under annealing at different temperatures. By optimizing the In2O3 layer, a power conversion efficiency of 18.12% is obtained, and is among the highest values for PSCs based on In2O3 ETL. Meanwhile, the unencapsulated devices exhibit a remarkable stability, retaining 75% of the initial value after over 120 days' storage.
Antisolvent‐ and Annealing‐Free Deposition for Highly Stable Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells via Modified ZnO

Abstract:Even though ZnO is commonly used as the ETL in the perovskite solar cell (PSC), the reactivity of perovskite deposited thereupon limits its performance. Herein, an ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid‐complexed ZnO (E‐ZnO) is successfully developed as a significantly improved electron selective layer (ESLs) in perovskite device. It is found that E‐ZnO exhibits higher electron mobility and better matched energy level with perovskite compared to ZnO. In addition, in order to eliminate the proton transfer reaction at the ZnO/perovskite interface, a high quality perovskite film fabrication process that requires neither annealing nor antisolvent is developed. By taking advantages of both E‐ZnO and the new process, the highest efficiency of 20.39% is obtained for PSCs based on E‐ZnO. Moreover, the efficiency of unencapsulated PSCs with E‐ZnO retains 95% of its initial value exposed in an ambient atmosphere after 3604 h. This work provides a feasible path toward high performance of PSCs, and it is believed that the present work will facilitate transition of perovskite photovoltaics in flexible and tandem devices since the annealing‐ and antisolvent‐free technology.

Abstract:In perovskite solar cells (PSCs), chemical bath deposition (CBD) is promising to be the core technique for preparing commercial electron transport layer (ETL) because the film prepared by CBD exhibits excellent uniform and conformal coverage of the substrate. However, metal oxide (MOx) films prepared through CBD often have defects on the surface like oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl that limit the PSCs efficiency and degrade the long-term stability. To address this obstacle to the scaled PSCs application, we here reconstructed the surface microstructure of CBD tin dioxide (SnO2) ETL by post-treatment with dilute H2SO4 solution to terminate the oxygen vacancies from the MOx surface while effectively removing the hydroxyl groups. Concurrently, the potent oxidizing property of H2SO4 facilitates the transformation from Sn (II) to Sn (IV), thereby enhancing the alignment of energy level between SnO2 and perovskite (PVK) layer within the ETL architecture. Moreover, the interaction between SO42- and perovskite precursor mitigates the difference in crystallization velocity between the perovskite upper and buried surfaces, enabling films with homogeneous phase distribution and good crystallization. Ultimately, with the assistance of this facile surface microstructure reconstruction, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) is improved from 22.48% to 24.29%.

Abstract:Stable electron transport materials (ETMs) with fewer surface defects and proper energy level alignments with halide perovskite active layers are required for efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with long-term durability. Here, two-dimensional van der Waals mixed valence tin oxides Sn2O3 and Sn3O4 are controllably synthesized and applied as ETMs for planar PSCs. The synthesized Sn2O3 and Sn3O4 have size of 5–20 nm and disperse well in water as stable colloids for months. Both Sn2O3 and Sn3O4 exhibit typical n-type semiconductor energy band structures, low trap density, and suitable energy level alignments with halide perovskites. Steady-state power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 22.36% and 21.83% are obtained for Sn2O3-based and Sn3O4-based planar PSCs. Abstract:The composition and nano particle agglomeration of hydrolyzed species in chemical bath deposition (CBD) plays a key role in obtaining efficient SnO 2 film for high performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, the aromatic acids with varied carboxyl groups were investigated to regulate the nano particle deposition and passivate the buried SnO 2 /perovskite interface. The quasi in-situ dynamic light scattering and Zeta potential results indicated that the nano particle agglomeration with trimesic acid (TMA) was significantly refined throughout the whole deposition process. The TMA-SnO 2 achieved an ideal energy band alignment with perovskite and released the internal residual strain, promoting the growth and crystallization of the perovskite film due to the corrdination of carboxyl groups. As a result, the interface defects were effectively passivated with enhanced efficiency and stability. The small area device based on TMA-SnO 2 obtained an efficiency of 25.07 %. The devices with an enlarged area of 1.4 cm 2 and the 5x5 cm 2 mini-module (active area 10.054 cm 2 ) showed impressive PCEs of 23.93 % and 22.40 %, respectively. Furthermore, the unencapsulated devices exhibited enhanced long-term stability, maintaining 80 % and 90 % of the initial efficiencies under 80 ± 5°C thermal annealing in nitrogen for 1176 h and in air condition for 3224 h, respectively.

Abstract:Chemical bath deposition (CBD) is an effective technique used to produce high-quality SnO2 electron transport layers (ETLs) employed in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). By optimizing the CBD process, high-quality SnO2 films are obtained with minimal oxygen vacancies and close energy level alignment with the perovskite layer. In addition, the 3D perovskite layers are passivated with n-butylammonium iodide (BAI), iso-pentylammonium iodide (PNAI), or 2-methoxyethylammonium iodide (MOAI) to form 3D/2D heterojunctions, resulting in defect passivation, suppressing ion migration and improving charge carrier extraction. As a result of these heterojunctions, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the PSCs increased from 21.39% for the reference device to 23.70% for the device containing the MOAI-passivated film. The 2D perovskite layer also provides a hydrophobic barrier, thus enhancing stability to humidity. Notably, the PNAI-based device exhibited remarkable stability, retaining approximately 95% of its initial efficiency after undergoing 1000-h testing in an N2 environment at room temperature.
