Abstract:A smart fire source sensing system is developed by combining a novel light/heat dual‐parameter response composite material with excellent output voltage and response time, a circuit microcontroller, and a message transmission system, which can achieve accurate fire recognition and warning. This research provides a new approach for designing wearable fire warning devices. The emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) era has necessitated the development of intelligent wearable electronics for fire warning to mitigate fire hazards prior to ignition. Although significant advancements are achieved in thermoelectric materials and devices, the design of a specific thermoelectric wearable device for precision fire warning still remains challenging. In this study, an intelligent sensing system for human IoT fire warning that utilizes a novel light/heat dual‐parameter‐responsive single‐walled carbon nanotube/poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl) (SWCNT/P3HT) composite is developed. This system comprises the composite, a circuit microcontroller, and a message transmission system, which together create an intelligent fire source sensing device. The synergistic effect of light and heat is observed to enhance the output voltage and response time under concurrent stimuli, as compared to heating alone. The intelligent sensing system is found to effectively identify and alarm for fire sources, owing to the high thermoelectric and photoelectric performance of the SWCNT/P3HT composite, precise fire recognition, and the ability to adjust the alarming threshold for detecting fire hazards. This study presents a new approach for designing light/heat dual‐parameter‐responsive materials and wearable devices, which hold potential applications in smart home living environments, including child protection against fire hazards.

Abstract:Historically, fire disasters have killed numerous human lives, and caused tremendous property loss. Fire warning systems play a vital role in predicting fire risks, and are strongly desired to effectively prevent the disaster occurrence and significantly reduce the loss. Among the developed fire warning systems, thermoelectrics (TEs) and thermocells (TECs)-based fire warning materials are extremely important and indispensable in future research, owing to their unique capability of direct conversion between heat and electricity. Here, we present this review of the recent progress of TEs and TECs in fire warning field. Firstly, a brief introduction of existing fire warning systems is provided, including the mechanisms and features of various types. Then, the mechanisms of electronic TE (eTE), ionic TE (iTE) and TEC are elucidated. Next, the basic principles for the material preparation and device fabrication are discussed in their dimension sequence. Subsequently, some important advances or examples of TE fire warnings are highlighted in details. Finally, the challenges and prospects are outlooked.

Abstract:With the rapid advancement of the Internet of Things, a wide range of information interaction platforms have been developed to enhance the quality of life and work. Nevertheless, rigid batteries greatly limit its development, which requires frequent replacement or recharge. Thermoelectric generators (TEG) have emerged as an attractive form for energy suppliers owing to their ability to convert low-grade energy heat into sustainable electricity. Herein, we have implemented a flexible TEG-based multifunctional information interaction system, which utilizes body heat to enable information interaction through finger touch. To increase the efficiency of energy conversion, the flexible TEG achieves high performance by optimizing the filling factor and material thermal conductivity, leading to a normalized power density of 1.43 μW/cm2 K2. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, the system has been applied to food spoilage monitoring with an MXene-based sensor to achieve stable and sensitive ammonia detection. The TEG-based information interaction system provides an attractive solution for intelligent packaging and will act as an exciting platform for human body energy harvesting and human–machine interaction for point of care testing.

Abstract:The number of fire events that risk human life, the economy, and the environment has significantly increased in recent years. Uncontrolled fires are one of the main causes of building collapse. Due to the high smoke concentration threshold or infrared detection temperature required to activate the fire detector, the response time is long, and the fire warning and prevention effect are not ideal. For effective monitoring and early warning of fires, an innovative fire alarm system was fabricated in this study. This system combines a highly flexible and self-powered thermal sensor (FSTS) as well as a commercial light emitting diode (LED). The FSTS is a fire-retardant sensor and very easy to install. The innovation of this paper is the hierarchical structure of the FSTS. It combines a graphene-modified intumescent flame retardant (GIFR) flame-retardant coating layer with a self-powered PVDF-based nanogenerator, which shows an innovative design in the area of fire sensors. The structure integrates poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) micro/nano fibers (MNFs) deposited by a near-field electrospinning (NFES) process and an electrostatic friction layer by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) rolling over technology with a fully encapsulated GIFR coating. It can be used as a motion-induced energy harvester with a self-powered fire alarm system. The voltage output of the FSTS reaches 11.8 V, which can be easily matched with a bridge rectifier circuit to charge capacitors in daily life. The unique feature of the FSTS is that, at room temperature, the FSTS is electrically insulating; however, it conducts electricity at high temperatures. In a fire, high temperatures cause the coating to char and expand transitioning from an electrically insulating state to a conducting state. In this way, warning lights connected to the FSTS will respond within a short period (∼3 s), alerting people immediately so that urgent action can be taken.

Abstract:Inspired by bombardier beetles, a thermoelectric generator modified with controllable exothermic and endothermic reactions is developed that can generate temperature difference by itself independing on environmental temperature gradient. It serves as a self‐powered battery that only becomes activated in the case of abnormal temperature increase. The thermoelectric voltage higher than 5.0 V and a giant power over 1.0 W are high enough to power a wireless alarming system in response to early forest fire. Forest fire has been becoming a conscious theme as it causes huge loss of life and ghastly impact on the ecological environment. Temperature sensor appropriate for large‐area distribution in forest is rising as a subject of considerable speculation to build a fire alarming network. This strategy needs power supplies that can support fire alarming sensors in long term. Herein, a concept of temperature‐arousing battery (TAB) is conceived that has no energy consumption at normal temperaturewhile becoming activated in fire scenario. The TAB is made of a thermoelectric (TE) generator deposited with exothermic and endothermic materials on its hot sink and cold sink, respectively. Learning from bombardier beetles, the exothermic reaction and endothermic reaction can only happen when the thermal‐responsive switches to isolate reactants are triggered in the event of fire occurrence. Even in an isothermal atmosphere, a remarkable temperature difference is formed between two sinks of TE generator, accordingly producing a thermoelectric voltage higher than 5.0 V and a giant power over 1.0 W, which are high enough to power a wireless signal transmitter. In the practical tests, the integrated self‐powered alarming system can transmit an electrical signal in 79 s when the TAB touches a forest fire.

Abstract:Thermoelectric materials have attracted considerable interest in the field of fire warning because of the accuracy and repeatability of their thermoelectric effect. Nevertheless, the incompatibility between high thermoelectric efficiency and flexibility restricts their application in flexible electronic materials. Herein, the dilemma was overcome by constructing a flexible thermoelectric nanocoating with layered heterostructure through the co-assembly of thermoelectric graphene (TEG) nanosheets and carboxymethyl cellulose (CCS). Layered heterostructure not only exhibited exceptional flexibility, but also enabled repeatable sensitive thermosensation of the nanocoating. The nanocoating could accurately monitor the temperature rise stage (50–350 °C) of a fire, and trigger the fire-warning within 1.5 s when encountering flame. Even it was reburned, the nanocoating still triggered the fire-warning within 2.6 s. Besides, the compact layered structure endowed the nanocoating with efficient flame retardancy. The coated polyester film reached a limiting oxygen index of 33.7 % and self-extinguished in vertical burning test. This flexible thermoelectric nanocoating may pave the way toward high fire safety for flexible electronic materials.

Abstract:Self-healable electronics with self-recoverable mechanical properties show a lot of potential in improving the reliability and durability of wearable electronic devices, but it is still challenging. Herein, a self-healing core-sheath thermoelectric (TE) fiber-based temperature sensor was continuously fabricated by coaxial wet-spinning strategy, whose core layer and sheath layer are, respectively, pure Ti3C2Tx MXene and self-healing silk sericin (SS)/oxide sodium alginate (OSA) composite. The prepared SS/OSA@MXene core-sheath TE fiber exhibits accurate temperature-sensing at 200–400 °C based on a linear relationship between TE voltage and temperature difference. The core-sheath TE fiber that can be integrated into firefighting clothing and timely alert firefighters to evacuate from the fire before the protective clothing becomes damaged. When exposed to flames, SS/OSA@MXene can rapidly trigger a high-temperature warning voltage of 3.36 mV within 1.17 s and exhibit reversible high-temperature alarm performance. In addition, the fractured SS/OSA@MXene can restore up to 89.12% of its original strain limit at room temperature because of the robust yet reversible dynamic covalent bonds between SS and OSA. In this study, an ingenious strategy for developing a durable and wearable TE fiber-based self-powered temperature sensor was proposed. This strategy has promising application prospects in real-time temperature detection of firefighting clothing to ensure the safety of firefighters operating on a fire scene.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:High fire-safety and sensitive temperature-response materials are urgently needed for the development of intelligent fire protection. Herein, a multifunctional flame-retardant ionic hydrogel (HTIG) with high thermopower was fabricated via free-radical polymerization. HTIG exhibited high thermopower, sensitive fire warning and strain sensing, excellent flame retardancy and self-adhesive performance. The thermopower of HTIG was as high as 3.04 mV·K-1 which was tens of times higher than those of traditional electronic thermoelectric materials, and it showed a good linear relationship between voltage and temperature difference. When being burned, HTIG triggered the fire alarm in about 4 s and generated a voltage more than 100 mV. More importantly, HTIG showed high fire safety. It was quickly self-extinguished when removed from the fire. It increased the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of Wood from 27% to more than 80%. Besides, HTIG displayed good strain sensing performance, which could be used for motion monitoring. Our work provided new insights for the preparation of the next generation of intelligent multifunctional fireproof materials.

Abstract:Multifunctional biofilms with early fire-warning capabilities are highly necessary for various indoor and outdoor applications, but a rational design of intelligent fire alarm films with strong weather resistance remains a major challenge. Herein, a multiscale hierarchical biofilm based on lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and TiO2 was developed through a vacuum-assisted alternate self-assembly and dipping method. Then, an early fire-warning system that changes from an insulating state to a conductive one was designed, relying on the rapid carbonization of LCNFs together with the unique electronic excitation characteristics of TiO2. Typically, the L-CNT-TiO2 film exhibited an ultrasensitive fire-response signal of ~0.30 s and a long-term warning time of ~1238 s when a fire disaster was about to occur, demonstrating a reliable fire-alarm performance and promising flame-resistance ability. More importantly, the L-CNT-TiO2 biofilm also possessed a water contact angle (WCA) of 166 ± 1° and an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) as high as 2000, resulting in excellent superhydrophobicity, antifouling, self-cleaning as well as incredible anti-ultraviolet (UV) capabilities. This work offers an innovative strategy for developing advanced intelligent films for fire safety and prevention applications, which holds great promise for the field of building materials.

Abstract:Highly sensitive smart sensors for early fire detection with remote warning capabilities are urgently required to improve the fire safety of combustible materials in diverse applications. The highly-sensitive fire alarm can detect fire situation within a short time quickly when a fire disaster is about to occur, which is conducive to achieve fire tuned. Herein, a novel fire alarm is designed by using flame-retardant cellulose paper loaded with graphene oxide (GO) and two-dimensional titanium carbide (Ti3C2, MXene). Owing to the excellent temperature dependent electrical resistance switching effect of GO, it acts as an electrical insulator at room temperature and becomes electrically conductive at high temperature. During a fire incident, the partial oxygen-containing groups on GO will undergo complete removal, which results in the conductivity transformation.Besides the use of GO feature, this work also introduces conductive MXene to enhance fire detection speed and warning at low temperature, especially below 300 °C. The designed flame-retardant fire alarm is sensitive enough to detect fire incident, showing a response time of 2 s at 250 °C, which is calculated by a novel and quantifiable technique. More importantly, the designed fire alarm sensor is coupled to a wireless communication interface to conveniently transmit fire signal remotely. Therefore, when an abnormal temperature is detected, the signal is wirelessly transmitted to a liquid crystal display (LCD) screen when displays a message such as "FIRE DANGER". The designed smart fire alarm paper is promising for use as a smart wallpaper for interior house decoration and other applications requiring early fire detection and warning.

Abstract:Thermal and Fire hazards result in numerous damage to human life and property. The early detection and instant communication of potential hazards using environmentally sustainable sensors before they occur would significantly reduce the negative impact on the environment while saving lives and property from destruction. Here-in, for the first time, a self-powered thermal and fire hazard sensor was designed by coupling gravitational potential energy to the triboelectric effect to generate electric signals. Harnessing the mechanical integrity and phase change property of the paraffin rod, it is employed as mechanical load support and thermal receptor in the sensor. Furthermore, the sensor was integrated with several communication interfaces such as liquid crystal display (LCD), Wi-Fi emitter, light-emitting diode (LED) light, IoT network, and mobile phone. The sensor exhibited an instant response (∼0 s response time) at temperature ranges between 80 and 89 °C.

Abstract:Fire safety and prevention of combustible materials are of paramount importance in modern society but have been a global challenge. Frequent fire disasters cause massive casualties and irreparable property losses and negatively impact the global environment. A recent increasing concern is to develop smart fire warning materials and sensors that combine traditional passive flame retardant strategies and active fire alarm response. However, there still lacks an incisive and comparative overview of such fire warning systems. This review comprehensively discusses passive flame retardant materials, traditional active fire warning sensors, and next-generation smart fire warning materials and sensors, in addition to the flammability of combustible materials. The conceptual design, synthesis, characterizations, and fabrication strategies of smart warning materials are systematically reviewed. Subsequently, the performance and applications of different fire warning sensor systems, including resistance-type, phase/shape change, thermoelectric responsive and colour-change observation, were reviewed and compared to understand their features and working mechanisms better. Finally, some key challenges associated with fire warning materials/sensors are highlighted, following which future perspectives and opportunities are proposed.

Abstract:Intelligent fire warning system is a crucial protective equipment reduce fire hazards. A recent increasing concern is the development of sensitive fire warning materials that can be integrated with combustible materials to provide real-time alarms in the fire. However, current research on improving the sensitivity of fire warning sensors based on temperature-resistance response focuses on constructing continuous conductive networks. The effect of the heat transfer process is ignored, which limits the further improvement of alarm sensitivity. Here, we developed a strategy to improve thermal conductivity. Based on the chitosan (CS) conductive network in Ti 3 O 5 -based fire sensing system, aminated 2D h-BN nanosheets with high temperature resistance and ultrahigh in-plane thermal conductivity were further introduced. The h-BN improves the thermal conductivity of the fire warning coating from 1.43 W/m·K to 2.29 W/m·K. Intelligent fire warning sensors with ultra-sensitivity (1.16 s), low response temperature (170 o C), duration time (12 min) and durability (100 cycles) were successfully prepared by improving thermal conductivity to rapidly transfer heat to Ti 3 O 5 , which leads to a rapid decrease in resistance as the core mechanism. This work proposed an ingenious strategy for the construction of high fire safety and thermal conduction fireproof coatings, which revealed enticing prospects in the field of intelligent coatings.

Abstract:With the acceleration of urbanization, energy-efficient, comfortable, and lightweight materials have been growing widely used. An ideal real-time monitoring strategy integrated with prominent fire sensing capability, flame retardancy, and embedded in communication network Internet of Things (IoT) remains a huge concern. Here, we develop a sensitive and durable fire alarm intelligent coating strategy based on a metal-insulator transitional Ti3O5 via a layer-by-layer assembly (LBL). We elucidate the atomic structure, electronic band, and orbital structure of Ti3O5 correlated from the charge-ordered beta-phase (electrical insulation state) to valencedelocalized of alpha-phase (electrical conduction state) during switchable temperature by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Accordingly, a thermally activated electron jump among the localized states facilitates the early fire alarm with a sensitive fire response time (-3.78 s) and an excellent response repeatability. Moreover, the fire alarm coating also performs the remarkable flame retardancy, smoke suppression and weatherability. This work provides a promising routine to realize the condensed matter as advanced fire sensors, offering insights into fire alarm towards smart phones, cloud service, and a central control system through IoT for fire prevention and protection application.
Intelligent cyclic fire warning sensor based on hybrid PBO nanofiber and montmorillonite nanocomposite papers decorated with phenyltriethoxysilane

Abstract:An abundance of early warning graphene-based nano-materials and sensors have been developed to avoid and prevent the critical fire risk of combustible materials. However, there are still some limitations that should be addressed, such as the black color, high-cost and single fire warning response of graphene-based fire warning materials. Herein, we report an unexpected montmorillonite (MMT)-based intelligent fire warning materials that have excellent fire cyclic warning performance and reliable flame retardancy. Combining phenyltriethoxysilane (PTES) molecules, poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) nanofiber (PBONF), and layers of MMT to form a silane crosslinked 3D nanonetwork system, the homologous PTES decorated MMT-PBONF nanocomposites are designed and fabricated via a sol-gel process and low temperature self-assembly method. The optimized nanocomposite paper shows good mechanical flexibility (good recovery after kneading or bending process), high tensile strength of ∼81 MPa and good water resistance. Furthermore, the nanocomposite paper exhibits high-temperature flame resistance (almost unchanged structure and size after 120 s combustion), sensitive flame alarm response (∼0.3 s response once exposure onto a flame), cyclic fire warning performance (>40 cycles), and adaptability to complex fire situations (several fire attack and evacuation scenarios), showing promising applications for monitoring the critical fire risk of combustible materials. Therefore, this work paves a rational way for design and fabrication of MMT-based smart fire warning materials that combine excellent flame shielding and sensitive fire alarm functions.
A heat-triggered triboelectric nanogenerator for self-powered wireless fire alarm

Abstract:Power supply is playing an increasingly important role in the rapidly developing era of the Internet of Things. In this study, we present a heat-triggered triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and develop a self-powered fire alarm system to achieve an early warning without an external power supply. A TENG comprises a gear system that can utilize the elastic potential energy of a spring. A wax block was used as a heat trigger. When melted at high temperatures, the TENG will be triggered to work and generate considerable electric energy. Within a single operation cycle of approximately 6 seconds, a 22 μF capacitor can be charged up to 3.7 V. Such electrical energy is sufficient to drive a wireless transmission module through an automatic switching circuit. Overall, this study provides a feasible approach for a self-powered wireless warning system in power-shortage areas.

Abstract:Textile-based triboelectric nanogenerators (T-TENGs), combining the functions of energy harvesting and self-powered sensing with advantages of breathability and flexibility, have received intensive attention, which is vital to the rapid advancements in smart textiles. However, there exists few reports of T-TENGs applied to fires under the intelligent era of high requirements for devices with versatility and multiscenario practicability. Here, in combination with flame-retardant conductive cotton fabric, polytetrafluoroethylene-coated cotton fabric, and a divider, a low-cost and environmentally friendly flame-retardant textile-based triboelectric nanogenerator (FT-TENG) is developed, which is endowed with excellent fire resistance and outstanding energy harvesting capabilities. The cotton fabrics treated with a layer-by-layer self-assembly method show great self-extinguishing performance. Besides, the maximum peak power density of the FT-TENG can reach 343.19 mW/m2 under the tapping frequency of 3 Hz. Furthermore, the FT-TENG still keeps 49.2% of the initial electrical output even after being burned at 17 different positions; 34.48% of the electrical output is also retained when the FT-TENG is exposed to 220 °C. Moreover, the FT-TENGs are successfully applied as energy harvesters for firefighters and self-powered sensors for forest self-rescue and fire alarm systems. Abstract:Fire accidents pose a significant threat to public safety, property, and the environment. Traditional power-dependent rescue and sensing devices are susceptible to failure or even explosion in high-temperature and open-fire environments. This research has developed fire-retardant cellulosic triboelectric materials, offering a potential solution. Due to the protection of hydroxyapatite, the cellulose nanofibril (CNF)/hydroxyapatite composite film did not undergo obvious deformation or carbonization after burning for 60 s under a 500 °C alcohol lamp flame. The closely packed cross-sectional structure facilitated air filling, endowing it with certain heat insulation performance. The high surface roughness and special microstructure greatly enhanced the triboelectric performance, achieving an open circuit voltage of 102 V and a short circuit current of 6.18 μA under a working area of only 4 cm 2 , surpassing most cellulose-based triboelectric materials. The results in self-powered sensing of high-temperature and open flames indicate that fire-retardant cellulosic triboelectric materials have the potential for use in high-temperature environments. This study introduces a new idea for energy harvesting and sensing at extreme conditions, which has important significance for the development of wearable self-powered sensors and the smooth progress of fire rescue operations. Abstract:The design and exploitation of highly fire-safe aerogel with ultrasensitive fire-warning response and highly efficient thermal management capabilities are urgently needed to protect firefighters from burn injuries during fire operations and rescue. Herein, an ultralight temperature-triggered fire-warning aerogel composited of polyethylene glycol (PEG)@modified wood powder (MW)/amino-functionalized carbon nanotube (A-CNT)/calcium alginate (CA) (abbreviated as P@MW-A-CA) was fabricated. Benefiting the rapid decrease in electrical resistance of A-CNT at high temperatures, P@MW-A-CA achieved an ultrafast fire warning response time of ∼2.03 s when exposed to fire. Meanwhile, PEG was encapsulated into MW and acted as microtubule phase-change material (P@MW) in aerogel to effectively delay the heat penetration into P@MW-A-CA. The stiff MW served as the backbone endowed the fire-warning aerogel a “stiff-soft” structure that increased the mechanical resilience. P@MW-A-CA achieve flyweight density (0.038 g/cm3), low thermal conductivity (0.06233 ± 0.0012 W/m⋅K), and outstanding self-extinguishment (<1.02 s). This work provides an environmental friendliness approach to design an ultralight early fire-warning aerogel in firefighting clothing for enhancing the fire safety of firefighters.

Abstract:Forest fires have long been a significant global problem. How to reliably accomplish the early warning and real-time monitoring of forest fires has become a pressing issue in order to limit the damage caused by forest fires. A novel technological approach for forest fire monitoring has been made possible by the quick development of wireless sensor network (WSN) technology. Currently, batteries are the primary source of power for WSNs used in forests, but frequent battery replacement will compromise the network for monitoring. As a result, the power supply is the key limit to its application in forest areas. This paper puts forward the thermoelectric conversion based on the Seebeck effect. Its notable feature is to convert heat energy into electric energy through the temperature difference between shallow soil and air. In the process of testing the device, the maximum voltage was 803.36 mV. At the same time, a power management system (PMS) for a thermoelectric conversion device was designed. The main feature of this system is that there is no need for an external control module. In the laboratory test, the minimum input power of this system was 200 mV. When the load resistance was 8 KΩ, the output power was 0.55 mW, and the maximum efficiency could reach 65.38% when the input was 500 mV, which fulfills the requirements of low cost and high reliability, providing a feasible solution for solving the energy limitation problem of WSNs in a forest area.
