Abstract:Carbon migration, transformation, and emissions as CO2 in reservoir and lake systems have been extensively studied. However, uncertainties persist regarding carbon cycling variations in both karst and non-karst regions within large thermal stratified river-reservoir systems. To address this knowledge gap, we combined measurements of water chemistry, isotopic compositions (delta C-13), partial pressure of CO2 (pCO(2)), and CO2 fluxes (F-CO2) to elucidate the differences, control mechanisms, and environmental effects of various carbon biogeochemical processes in the Hongjiadu reservoir (HJD, karst reservoir) and Shangyoujiang reservoir (SYJ, non-karst reservoir), Yangtze River basin, China. Our results demonstrate that key biogeochemical processes are associated with CO2 production and emissions. The stronger biological carbon pump (BCP) effect in the lentic area of the HJD reservoir limited CO2 emission (0.9 +/- 5.0 mmol m(-2) d(-1)) compared to the SYJ reservoir (50.9 +/- 33.4 mmol m(-2) d(-1)), leading to low dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and high saturation state of carbonate minerals in the lentic epilimnion. Although the released water from both reservoirs acted as hotspots for CO2 emissions, the results of higher Revelle factor (RF) in the HJD reservoir than SYJ reservoir suggest the greater buffer capacity and lower sensitivity of OC degradation changes in DIC. Despite the shorter hydraulic retention time (HRT) of SYJ reservoir (120 d) compared to HJD reservoir (368 d), F-CO2 was 3.5 times higher than that of the HJD reservoir (652.9 mmol m(-2) d(-1)). Moreover, upon analyzing selected reservoirs worldwide, it becomes apparent that karst reservoirs demonstrate a reduced potential for CO2 emissions. Our results indicate that the impact of varying geologic settings should be considered to minimize errors in regional and global CO2 emission estimates.

Abstract:As an important component of inland water, the primary factors affecting the carbon cycle in karst river-lake systems require further investigation. In particular, the impacts of climatic factors and the biological carbon pump (BCP) on carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange fluxes in karst rivers and lakes deserve considerable attention. Using quarterly sampling, field monitoring, and meteorological data collection, the spatiotemporal characteristics of CO2 exchange fluxes in Erhai Lake (a typical karst lake in Yunnan, SW China) and its inflow rivers were investigated and the primary influencing factors were analyzed. The average river CO2 exchange flux reached 346.80 mg m-2 h-1, compared to -6.93 mg m-2 h-1 for the lake. The carbon cycle in rivers was strongly influenced by land use within the basin; cultivated and construction land were the main contributors to organic carbon (OC) in the river (r = 0.66, p < 0.01) and the mineralization of OC was a major factor in CO2 oversaturation in most rivers (r = 0.76, p < 0.01). In addition, the BCP effect of aquatic plants and the high pH in karst river-lake systems enhance the ability of water body to absorb CO2, resulting in undersaturated CO2 levels in the lake. Notably, under rainfall regulation, riverine OC and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) flux inputs controlled the level of CO2 exchange fluxes in the lake (rOC = 0.78, p < 0.05; rDIC = 0.97, p < 0.01). We speculate that under future climate and human activity scenarios, the DIC and OC input from rivers may alleviate the CO2 limitation of BCP effects in karst eutrophication lakes, possibly enabling aquatic plants to convert more CO2 into OC for burial. The results of this research can help advance our understanding of CO2 emissions and absorption mechanisms in karst river-lake systems.

Abstract:The eutrophication of lakes is a global environmental problem. Regulating nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) on phytoplankton is considered to be the most important basis of lake eutrophication management. Therefore, the effects of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) on phytoplankton and its role in mitigating lake eutrophication have often been overlooked. In this study, the relationships between phytoplankton and DIC concentrations, carbon isotopic composition, nutrients (N and P), and hydrochemistry in the Erhai Lake (a karst lake) were investigated. The results showed that when the dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2(aq)) concentrations in the water were higher than 15 µmol/L, the productivity of phytoplankton was controlled by the concentrations of TP and TN, especially by that of TP. When the N and P were sufficient and the CO2(aq) concentrations were lower than 15 µmol/L, the phytoplankton productivity was controlled by the concentrations of TP and DIC, especially by that of DIC. Additionally, DIC significantly affected the composition of the phytoplankton community in the lake (p<0.05). When the CO2(aq) concentrations were higher than 15 µmol/L, the relative abundance of Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta was much higher than those of harmful Cyanophyta. Thus, high concentrations of CO2(aq) can inhibit harmful Cyanophyta blooms. During lake eutrophication, when controlling N and P, an appropriate increase in CO2(aq) concentrations by land-use changes or pumping of industrial CO2 into water may reduce the proportion of harmful Cyanophyta and promote the growth of Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta, which may provide effectively assist in mitigating water quality deterioration in surface waters.

Abstract:Based on similar to 150-year of sedimentary records, we identify that autochthonous carbonate deposition in Lake Wuliangsu, in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, was independent of both hydrological and ecological variations before 1965, influenced by hydrological changes due to agricultural activities during 1965-1990, and slightly impacted by higher productivity under the eutrophication process after 1990. By comparing with data from lakes across the globe, we find that lake size and lake stratification control the contribution of recycled organic carbon to autochthonous carbonate deposition. Continuous mixing and aeration in shallow lakes facilitate the transformation of organic carbon into 29-45% of sedimentary carbonate, different from large and deep lakes (2-25%). Organic carbon recycling in lakes remains generally stable or decreases under the pressure of lake eutrophication, requiring further investigations on whether more organic carbon will be buried in the carbonate form.
Role of carbon and nutrient exports from different land uses in the aquatic carbon sequestration and eutrophication process

Abstract:The hydrochemical features affected by differing land uses play a key role in regulating both the primary production of aquatic photosynthetic organisms and the formation of autochthonous organic carbon (AOC); this impacts eutrophication and the global carbon cycle. In shallow water environments where phytoplankton and submerged plants coexist, the C-N-P limitations on the primary production of these aquatic organisms, and the mechanisms by which they promote the formation of AOC are poorly understood. In this study, over the hydrological year September 2018 to August 2019, a large-scale field simulation experiment at the Shawan Karst Test Site (SW China) with various types of land use was systematically conducted to investigate the C-N-P limitations on the primary production of phytoplankton and submerged plants. The results indicate that (1) phytoplankton are co-limited by nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) but with the N more important, while submerged plants are limited by carbon (C); (2) Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta display a stronger competitive advantage than Cyanophyta in aqueous environments with high C but low N-P; (3) there is a seasonal difference in the contribution of phytoplankton and submerged plants to the formation of AOC, however, throughout the year, the contributions of phytoplankton (27%) and submerged plants biomass (28%) to AOC concentrations in the water were similar, combinedly accounting for approximately 17% of the formed AOC. It is concluded that natural restoration of vegetation, or injecting CO2 into water, which results in higher C but lower N-P loadings, may simultaneously help to mitigate eutrophication (with changes in biological structure and species) and increase C sequestration in surface waters.

Abstract:Lake eutrophication is a pervasive problem globally, particularly serious in agricultural and densely populated areas. Whenever nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus do not limit phytoplankton growth directly, high growth rates will rapidly lead to biomass increases causing self-shading and light-limitation, and eventually CO2 depletion. The paradigm of phytoplankton limitation by nutrients and light is so pervasively established, that the lack of nutrient limitation is ordinarily interpreted as sufficient evidence for the condition of light limitation, without considering the possibility of limitation by inorganic carbon. Here, we firstly evaluated how frequently CO2 undersaturation occurs in a set of eutrophic lakes in the Pampa plains. Our results confirm that conditions of CO2 undersaturation develop much more frequently (yearly 34%, summer 44%) in these agriculturally impacted lakes than in deep, temperate lakes in forested watersheds. Secondly, we used Generalized Additive Models to fit trends in CO2 concentration considering three drivers: total incident irradiance, chlorophyll a concentration, and lake depth; in eight multi-year datasets from eutrophic lakes from Europe, North and South America, Asia and New Zealand. CO2 depletion was more often observed at high irradiance levels, and shallow water. CO2 depletion also occurred at high chlorophyll concentration. Finally, we identified occurrences of light- and carbon-limitation at the whole-lake scale. The different responses of chlorophyll a and CO2 allowed us to develop criteria for detecting conditions of CO2 limitation. For the first time, we provided whole-lake evidence of carbon limitation of phytoplankton biomass. CO2 increases and eutrophication represent two major and converging environmental problems that have additive and contrasting effects, promoting phytoplankton, and also leading to carbon depletion. Their interactions deserve further exploration and imaginative approaches to deal with their effects.

Abstract:Planktonic microorganisms have been recognized as important components in biogeochemical cycling in lakes. However, research into the impact of phyllosphere microorganisms, particularly those involved in carbon cycling, on CO2 fluxes in macrophyte-dominated lakes within the context of global environmental changes remains scarce. Here, by employing high-throughput sequencing techniques, we experimentally tested how nutrient enrichment, top-down effects of fish and increases in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) affect CO2 exchange flux at the water-air interface by altering the community structure and functioning of phyllosphere bacteria on macrophytes. We found that our mesocosm ecosystems exhibited a net absorption of CO2, but nutrient enrichment significantly decreased the absorption ability. Mantel tests and multiple regression modeling also showed that eutrophication-associated parameters (total nitrogen, total phosphorus and ammonium nitrogen), pH, and extinction coefficient are the key drivers influencing abundance of phyllosphere functional microorganisms. In addition, these experimental treatments significantly altered the composition, diversity and co-occurrence networks of carbon cycling-associated phyllosphere microorganisms, which impacted the CO2 flux. Structural equation models and linear regression further showed that the Shannon Index of phyllosphere functional microorganisms related to carbon cycling (rather than plant volume inhabited - PVI) had a significant positive impact on CO2 fixation. This means that environmental changes—especially eutrophication—may hinder carbon sequestration by decreasing the diversity of phyllosphere microorganisms rather than reducing the abundance of submerged macrophytes. This study increases our understanding of carbon cycling processes in aquatic environments from a management perspective by emphasizing the importance of protecting the diversity of phyllosphere microorganisms in macrophyte-dominated lakes.

Abstract:Reactive N inputs (Nr) may alleviate N-limitation of plant growth and are assumed to help sustain plant responses to the rising atmospheric CO2 (eCO(2)). However, Nr and eCO(2) may elicit a cascade reaction that alters soil chemistry and nutrient availability, shifting the limiting factors of plant growth, particularly in acidic tropical and subtropical croplands with low organic matter and low nutrient cations. Yet, few have so far examined the interactive effects of Nr and eCO(2) on the dynamics of soil cation nutrients and soil acidity. We investigated the cation dynamics in the plant-soil system with exposure to eCO(2) and different N sources in a subtropical, acidic agricultural soil. eCO(2) and Nr, alone and interactively, increased Ca2+ and Mg2+ m soil solutions or leachates in aerobic agroecosystems. eCO(2) significantly reduced soil pH, and NH4+-N inputs amplified this effect, suggesting that eCO(2)-induced plant preference of NH4+-N and plant growth may facilitate soil acidification. This is, to our knowledge, the first direct demonstration of eCO(2) enhancement of soil acidity, although other studies have previously shown that eCO(2) can increase cation release into soil solutions. Together, these findings provide new insights into the dynamics of cation nutrients and soil acidity under future climatic scenarios, highlighting the urgency for more studies on plant-soil responses to climate change in acidic tropical and subtropical ecosystems.
The influence of the deep subtropical reservoir on the karstic riverine carbon cycle and its regulatory factors: Insights from the seasonal and hydrological changes

Abstract:Reservoirs are widely established worldwide with considerable environmental impacts, especially on the riverine carbon cycle. However, the influence of reservoirs on the cycling of different forms of carbon and its regulation factors (e.g., seasonal variations versus hydrological management) have not been simultaneously studied. To fill this knowledge gap, seasonal water samples from the deep subtropical reservoir (Longtan reservoir) in the Pearl River were collected, and the concentrations and stable carbon isotopes of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and particulate organic carbon (POC) were determined. The variations in stable carbon isotopes of DIC (-11.4‰ to -5.2‰), DOC (-32.2‰ to -26.2‰), and POC (-38.9‰ to -25.3‰) in the river-reservoir system indicated active production and degradation processes in different layers. We estimated that up to 23.0% of DIC, 20.5% of DOC, and most POC were intercepted or degraded within the reservoir. Our results further illustrated that hydrological management (water storage regulation) and seasonal variations from different perspectives controlled the cycling of different forms of carbon in the reservoir. In addition, with the gradual increase in the number of reservoirs, hydrological management can be considered as a potentially effective strategy to adjust the carbon biogeochemical cycling of reservoirs in the future.
Primary productivity and seasonal dynamics of planktonic algae species composition in karst surface waters under different land uses

Abstract:Human activities have altered land use patterns and, thus, the hydrochemical features (e.g., CO2(aq), NO3–, and PO43–) of watersheds, influencing both the C cycle and the quality of water (e.g., eutrophication) within them. The ways in which primary productivity and the dynamics of planktonic algae species composition are related to these hydrochemical changes remains unclear, especially in karst waters with high pH and high concentrations of Ca2+ and dissolved inorganic C. In this study, we used the Shawan Karst Test Site, Puding, SW China to analyze the influences of the NO3–, PO43–, and CO2(aq) concentrations on the primary productivity and dynamics of planktonic algae species composition in five spring-fed ponds under different land use patterns at the site during 2018. Our results show the following. (1) Agricultural farming increased the input of NO3-, PO43-, and CO2(aq) from springs to the ponds (i.e., surface waters); meanwhile, shrub and grass lands reduced the input of NO3- and PO43-, but significantly increased the input of CO2(aq) to the water. (2) The total number of planktonic algal cells was mainly related to CO2(aq) in January (i.e., the dormant period), but mainly related to NO3- and PO43- in July (i.e., the growth period); this possibly due to the seasonal succession of phytoplanktonic algae species sensitivity of different nutrient elements. (3) In the dormant period, the system is dominated by the phytoplanktonic algal cells sensitive to CO2(aq), especially in grass and shrub ponds. In the growth period, the system is dominated by the planktonic algal cells sensitive to NO3- and PO43-; however, they are far less than others in grass and shrub ponds. Thus, we predict that groundwaters with relatively high CO2(aq) and low NO3- and PO43- concentrations (resulting from natural afforestation in karst areas) may help alleviate eutrophication and increase C sequestration in the corresponding surface waters, indicating the importance of land-use adjustment in the management of water quality and carbon cycle.

The effect of reservoir expansion from underground karst cave to surface reservoir on water quality in southwestern China

Abstract:Due to the excessive exploitation of traditional energy sources, the attention paid to water energy has increased in recent years. As an important means to effectively utilize water energy, reservoirs play an important role in drinking water, irrigation, flood control, and drought resistance. However, utilizing reservoirs often led to water quality issues resulting from the interaction of nutrients and hydrological conditions, especially due to the special structure of karst areas. Because of the change of hydrological conditions by the effect of dam construction, the dynamic of water quality will be more obvious in karst areas with a fast exchange of water and contaminants between underground and surface streams. In the present study, the change in water quality of a karst reservoir, the Muzhu Reservoir in the Houzhai Catchment, was studied. Long-term monitored datasets (1981-2002) and water quality datasets of more recent years were used to assess the effect on the water quality of reservoir expansion from the underground reservoir to the surface reservoir in a karst area. Long-term series datasets had shown that the hydro-chemistry type had been changed from HCO3-·SO42--Ca2+·Mg2+ type to HCO3--Ca2+ type in the short term after the reservoir's expansion. The chemical components of water originating from a rock background reduced markedly after the reservoir's expansion, whereas the content of the anthropogenic contribution in the water decreased after the expansion, except in April and May. Isotopic characteristics showed that δ15N-NO3- and δ18O-NO3- values were positively correlated before and after the reservoir expansion, but the slope of the linear regression before the expansion was 0.34, while the slope of the linear regression before the expansion was close to 0.7. This indicated that although denitrification and assimilation may occur simultaneously after the reservoir's expansion, the role of denitrification on nitrate removal decreased, which resulted in nitrate accumulation in the karst reservoir. The results highlighted that nitrate accumulation in karst reservoirs should be monitored to decrease nitrate concentration in the future.

Abstract:In the context of an increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) level, acidification of estuarine and coastal waters is greatly exacerbated by land-derived nutrient inputs, coastal upwelling, and complex biogeochemical processes. A deeper understanding of how nitrifiers respond to intensifying acidification is thus crucial to predict the response of estuarine and coastal ecosystems and their contribution to global climate change. Here, we show that acidification can significantly decrease nitrification rate but stimulate generation of byproduct nitrous oxide (N 2 O) in estuarine and coastal waters. By varying CO 2 concentration and pH independently, an expected beneficial effect of elevated CO 2 on activity of nitrifiers ("CO 2 -fertilization" effect) is excluded under acidification. Metatranscriptome data further demonstrate that nitrifiers could significantly up-regulate gene expressions associated with intracellular pH homeostasis to cope with acidification stress. This study highlights the molecular underpinnings of acidification effects on nitrification and associated greenhouse gas N 2 O emission, and helps predict the response and evolution of estuarine and coastal ecosystems under climate change and human activities.

What Maintains Seasonal Nitrogen Limitation in Hyper-Eutrophic Lake Dianchi? Insights from Stoichiometric Three-Dimensional Numerical Modeling

Abstract:One debate about lake restoration is whether there is overemphasis of a “Phosphorus (P)-only” paradigm, while overlooking the limiting effect of nitrogen (N). In particular, the roles of internal nutrient cycling which could act as drivers of algal blooms are not yet well assessed. However, it is hardly possible to identify the complex mechanisms of nutrient limitation patterns in lakes only by in-situ experiments or monitored data. Numerical modeling can serve as a complementary approach by providing quantitative internal variations with high spatial and temporal resolutions. A three-dimensional model-based N:P stoichiometric approach was developed to explore the storage pools and fluxes that affect the limiting nutrient in hyper-eutrophic Lake Dianchi, the most eutrophic large lake in China with seasonal N limitation. The results highlighted the role of benthic P fluxes, which fluctuated considerably within a year and could supply enough P for algae, contributing over 50% of P input and leading to relative N deficiency during algal bloom. Further insights into N cycling indicated that N deficiency could be attributed to low N fixation and extremely high N losses from denitrification (~ 50% of total loss). Considering the continuous sediment P release and N losses that promote N deficiency, controlling both N and P loadings will benefit lake restoration.
High probability of nitrogen and phosphorus co-limitation occurring in eutrophic lakes

Abstract:Limnologists and governments have long had an interest in whether nitrogen (N) and/or phosphorous (P) limit algal productivity in lakes. However, the types and importance of anthropogenic and biogeochemical processes of N and P differ with lake trophic status. Here, a global lake dataset (annual average data from 831 lakes) demonstrates that total nitrogen (TN): total phosphorous (TP) ratios declined significantly as lakes become more eutrophic. From oligotrophic to hypereutrophic lakes, the probability of N and P co-limitation significantly increases from 15.0 to 67.0%, while P-only limitation decreases from 77.0 to 22.3%. Furthermore, TN:TP ratios are mainly affected by concentrations of TP (r = −0.699) rather than TN (r = −0.147). These results reveal that lake eutrophication mainly occurs with increasing P rather than N, which shifts lake ecosystems from stoichiometric P limitation toward a higher probability of N and P co-limitation. This study suggests that low N:P stoichiometry and a high probability of N and P co-limitation tend to occur in eutrophic systems.

Abstract:Cobalt (Co) cycling is often dominated by its role as a micronutrient in marine, while little is known on its cycling in a shallow eutrophic lake. Monthly sampling was performed in eutrophic Meiliang Bay of Lake Taihu, combining two laboratory control experiments and in situ Co limitation bioassay experiments. The high-resolution dialysis and the diffusive gradients in thin films technique were used to detect dissolved and labile Co, respectively. The positive correlations between dissolved/labile Co and Mn in the sediments for 6 or 7 months demonstrated that the mobility of Co in the sediments was primarily controlled by Mn redox cycling in the field. However, it is unexpected that the dissolved and labile Co only showed a small change over one year irrespective of the significant fluctuation in dissolved/labile Mn, with the concentrations being as low as 1.08 ± 0.22 μg/L and 0.246 ± 0.091 μg/L for dissolved and labile Co in the surface 20 mm sediment, respectively. Cyanobacterial bloom simulation and aerobic-anaerobic-cyanobacterial addition experiments indicated that the level of Co in the sediment-overlying water system was strongly regulated by cyanobacterial uptake, followed by the degradation of Co-enriched cyanobacterial biomass, which offset the influence of Mn redox cycling on Co mobility in the sediment. The significant enhancement of Microcystis spp. biomass by Co addition further indicated that Co was the potential limiting nutrient for cyanobacterial blooms. This work provides new ideas for better management strategies of eutrophication in shallow lakes.
Comparison of spatiotemporal carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus burial in two plateau lacustrine sediments: implication for N and P control

Abstract:The long-term accumulation, burial and release of nutrients, such as carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in lacustrine sediments are responsible for the global lake eutrophication. Interpretation of the spatiotemporal sedimentary record of nutrients (C, N, and P) in contrasting trophic level of lakes is helpful for understanding the evolutionary process of water eutrophication. Based on the radiochronology of 210Pbex and 137Cs, a comparative study of spatial and temporal concentrations, burial of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP), the sources of organic matter were conducted using sediment cores from two plateau lakes Dianchi (DC) and Fuxian (FX) of SW China. Results showed that concentrations and burial of C, N, and P in sediments of DC, a shallow hypertrophic lake with the maximum depth of 5.8 m, were both higher than those in FX, an oligotrophic deep lake with the maximum depth of 155.0 m. For both lakes the molar ratio of TOC/TN increased in the sediments moving from north to south. The values of TOC/TN molar ratios increased over time in DC and were higher than in FX. The extremely high values of TOC/TN appeared in the central and southern parts of FX, indicating the impacts of accumulation effect and sediment focusing in the deeper region and indirect supplement from the Lake Xingyun (XY), an adjoining lake connected with FX via the Gehe River. Time-integrated sources identification in DC indicated the contribution of allochthonous sources was dominant over the past few decades, which contributed to the increased trophic level of the lake. The comparison of relationships of carbon accumulation rates (CAR), nitrogen accumulation rates (NAR), and phosphorous accumulation rates (PAR), the ratios of N/P and the utilizations of N and P fertilizer between DC and FX implied that both of N and P inputs should be limited for reducing the trophic level, but N control was predominant in comparison with P for both lakes. The results indicated that caution is required in plateau lakes to limit transition from oligotrophic to eutrophic in these lakes.

Abstract:Microbial communities are crucial for water quality and biogeochemical cycling in freshwaters. Microbes secrete extracellular enzymes to decompose organic matter for their needs of nutrients and scarce elements. Yet, there is a lack of knowledge on microbial metabolic limitations in freshwaters, especially in lake sediments. Here, we examined the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus-acquiring extracellular enzyme activities and the bacterial and fungal communities of 30 sediments across Xingkai Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Northeast Asia. We further analyzed the microbial metabolic limitations via extracellular enzyme stoichiometry and explored the direct and indirect effects of abiotic and biotic factors on the limitations. We found that microbial metabolisms were primarily limited by phosphorus in Xingkai Lake. For instance, microbial carbon and phosphorus limitations were closely correlated to abiotic factors like water depth, total dissolved solids, sediment total carbon, and conductivity. The metabolic limitations were also affected by biotic factors, such as showing positive relationships with the alpha and beta diversity of bacteria, and with the beta diversity of fungi. In addition, community compositions of bacteria and fungi were mainly correlated to abiotic factors such as total carbon and dissolved organic carbon, respectively. Collectively, microbial metabolic limitations were affected directly or indirectly by abiotic factors and microbial communities. Our findings indicate that microbial metabolic limitations are not only driven by bacteria and fungi but also by abiotic factors such as water depth and total nitrogen, and thus provide empirical evidence for effective management of freshwater lakes under climate warming and intensified human activities.

Abstract:Revealing the magnitude, dynamics, and influencing factors of CO2 emissions across the water-air interface in karst water with high frequency is crucial for accurately assessing the carbon budget in a karst environment. Due to the limitations of observation methods, the current research is still very insufficient. To solve the above problems and clarify the main influencing factors of CO2 emission in karst water, this study selected Dalongdong (DLD) Reservoir, located in the typical karst peak and valley area in southwest China, to carry out a multi-parameter high-frequency monitoring study from January to December 2021, and used the thin boundary model method to estimate the CO2 flux across the water-air interface (CF). The average annual flux of DLD reservoir is 84.48 mmol·(m2·h)-1, which represents a CO2 source overall. However, during the stratification period in August, there is a transient carbon sink due to negative CO2 emission. The alteration of thermal stratification in water is crucial in regulating the seasonal variation of CF. Meanwhile, the diurnal variation is significantly influenced by changes in hydrochemical parameters during the thermal stratification stage. Compared to low wind speeds (<3 m/s), high wind speeds (≥3 m/s) have a greater impact on the CO2 flux. Furthermore, high-frequency continuous data revealed that the reservoir triggered a CO2 pulse emission during the turnover process, primarily at night, leading to unusually high CO2 flux values. It is of great significance to monitor and reveal the process, flux, and control factors of CO2 flux in land water at a high-frequency strategy. They will help improve the accuracy of regional or watershed carbon budgets and clarify the role of global land water in the global carbon budget.

Abstract:The significance of CO2 fertilization in increasing net primary production (NPP) and of the underpinning mechanisms is widely recognized. This article focuses on soil resources, particularly availability of plant nutrients (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorus) and water affecting the NPP under enhanced levels of atmospheric CO2. The review of the literature indicates the critical role of N in enhancing NPP at higher than ambient CO2 concentration. Elevated CO2 increases the total N uptake by 3–33% and induces a negative feedback in soil N dynamics. Decrease in tissue N concentration by 10–33%, and increase in the recalcitrant C- fractions in plant biomass results in progressive decline in soil N availability over time and necessitates supplemental application of N. In addition, higher quantity of soil available P is required. Despite a reduction in stomatal conductance and transpiration by about 20–27% at leaf level, these benefits are offset at the ecosystem level by higher water losses through soil evaporation, runoff and a rise in leaf temperature due to physiological forcing. A three-way interaction between atmospheric CO2, soil nutrients and water availability may be the decisive factor to harnessing the benefits of CO2 fertilization effect.
