Abstract:Carbon migration, transformation, and emissions as CO2 in reservoir and lake systems have been extensively studied. However, uncertainties persist regarding carbon cycling variations in both karst and non-karst regions within large thermal stratified river-reservoir systems. To address this knowledge gap, we combined measurements of water chemistry, isotopic compositions (delta C-13), partial pressure of CO2 (pCO(2)), and CO2 fluxes (F-CO2) to elucidate the differences, control mechanisms, and environmental effects of various carbon biogeochemical processes in the Hongjiadu reservoir (HJD, karst reservoir) and Shangyoujiang reservoir (SYJ, non-karst reservoir), Yangtze River basin, China. Our results demonstrate that key biogeochemical processes are associated with CO2 production and emissions. The stronger biological carbon pump (BCP) effect in the lentic area of the HJD reservoir limited CO2 emission (0.9 +/- 5.0 mmol m(-2) d(-1)) compared to the SYJ reservoir (50.9 +/- 33.4 mmol m(-2) d(-1)), leading to low dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and high saturation state of carbonate minerals in the lentic epilimnion. Although the released water from both reservoirs acted as hotspots for CO2 emissions, the results of higher Revelle factor (RF) in the HJD reservoir than SYJ reservoir suggest the greater buffer capacity and lower sensitivity of OC degradation changes in DIC. Despite the shorter hydraulic retention time (HRT) of SYJ reservoir (120 d) compared to HJD reservoir (368 d), F-CO2 was 3.5 times higher than that of the HJD reservoir (652.9 mmol m(-2) d(-1)). Moreover, upon analyzing selected reservoirs worldwide, it becomes apparent that karst reservoirs demonstrate a reduced potential for CO2 emissions. Our results indicate that the impact of varying geologic settings should be considered to minimize errors in regional and global CO2 emission estimates.
Control of carbon dioxide exchange fluxes by rainfall and biological carbon pump in karst river-lake systems

Abstract:As an important component of inland water, the primary factors affecting the carbon cycle in karst river-lake systems require further investigation. In particular, the impacts of climatic factors and the biological carbon pump (BCP) on carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange fluxes in karst rivers and lakes deserve considerable attention. Using quarterly sampling, field monitoring, and meteorological data collection, the spatiotemporal characteristics of CO2 exchange fluxes in Erhai Lake (a typical karst lake in Yunnan, SW China) and its inflow rivers were investigated and the primary influencing factors were analyzed. The average river CO2 exchange flux reached 346.80 mg m-2 h-1, compared to -6.93 mg m-2 h-1 for the lake. The carbon cycle in rivers was strongly influenced by land use within the basin; cultivated and construction land were the main contributors to organic carbon (OC) in the river (r = 0.66, p < 0.01) and the mineralization of OC was a major factor in CO2 oversaturation in most rivers (r = 0.76, p < 0.01). In addition, the BCP effect of aquatic plants and the high pH in karst river-lake systems enhance the ability of water body to absorb CO2, resulting in undersaturated CO2 levels in the lake. Notably, under rainfall regulation, riverine OC and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) flux inputs controlled the level of CO2 exchange fluxes in the lake (rOC = 0.78, p < 0.05; rDIC = 0.97, p < 0.01). We speculate that under future climate and human activity scenarios, the DIC and OC input from rivers may alleviate the CO2 limitation of BCP effects in karst eutrophication lakes, possibly enabling aquatic plants to convert more CO2 into OC for burial. The results of this research can help advance our understanding of CO2 emissions and absorption mechanisms in karst river-lake systems.
In-stream metabolism and atmospheric carbon sequestration in a groundwater-fed karst stream

Abstract:Atmospheric carbon sequestered in karst systems through dissolution of carbonate minerals is considered to have no net effect on long-term regional and global carbon budgets because precipitation of dissolved carbonate minerals emits CO2 back to the atmosphere. Even though recent studies have implied that rapid kinetics of carbonate dissolution coupled with the aquatic photosynthetic uptake of dissolve inorganic carbon (DIC) could facilitate a stable atmospheric C sink in karst rivers and streams, little is known about the magnitudes and long-term stability of this C sink. To assess in-stream biogeochemical processes and their role on stream C cycling, we measured diel cycles of water characteristics and chemical composition (temperature, pH, DO, SpC, DIC, Ca2+, δ13CDIC) in a groundwater-fed karst stream in southwest China. Our results show no diel variations at the groundwater discharge point (CK site) due to the absence of a sub-aquatic community (SAC). However, all hydrochemical parameters show significant diel cycle 1.3km downstream (LY site). Diel variations in pH, DO, and δ13CDIC were inversely related to diel changes in SpC, DIC, Ca2+ and pCO2. This result indicates that in-stream metabolism (photosynthesis and respiration) of SAC controls diel variations in stream water chemistry. Significant diel cycles of net ecosystem production (NEP) influences in-stream diel fluctuation of pH, DO, SIc, DIC, pCO2, Ca2+ and δ13CDIC, with gross primary production (GPP) dominating in day and ecosystem respiration (ER) dominating at the night. Absence of in-stream metabolism at CK enhances CO2 degassing from stream to the atmosphere, which is estimated to be 3-5 times higher than at LY. We estimate the carbon sink through in-stream metabolism of SAC to be 73tCkm-2a-1, which is around half the rate of the oceanic biological pump. These results imply in-stream photosynthesis sequesters DIC originating from karst weathering and controls CO2 evasion.

Abstract:Based on similar to 150-year of sedimentary records, we identify that autochthonous carbonate deposition in Lake Wuliangsu, in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, was independent of both hydrological and ecological variations before 1965, influenced by hydrological changes due to agricultural activities during 1965-1990, and slightly impacted by higher productivity under the eutrophication process after 1990. By comparing with data from lakes across the globe, we find that lake size and lake stratification control the contribution of recycled organic carbon to autochthonous carbonate deposition. Continuous mixing and aeration in shallow lakes facilitate the transformation of organic carbon into 29-45% of sedimentary carbonate, different from large and deep lakes (2-25%). Organic carbon recycling in lakes remains generally stable or decreases under the pressure of lake eutrophication, requiring further investigations on whether more organic carbon will be buried in the carbonate form.
Diel-scale variation of dissolved inorganic carbon during a rainfall event in a small karst stream in southern China

Abstract:Metabolic processes of the submerged aquatic community (photosynthesis and respiration) play important roles in regulating diel cycles of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and sequestering carbon in a karst stream. However, little is known of whether diel DIC cycling occurs during rainfall in a karst groundwater-fed stream, even though this question is critical for the accurate estimation of what may be a major terrestrial carbon sink. Here, we measured diel variations of water chemical composition in a small karst groundwater-fed stream in southwest China during a rainfall event to assess the influences of rainfall and rising discharge on DIC diel cycling and the potential carbon sink produced by in-stream metabolism. Our results show that water chemical composition at the source spring (CK site) is relatively stable due to chemostatic behavior during rising discharge after a rainfall period. This site lacked submerged aquatic vegetation and, thus, had no diel variations in water chemistry. However, diel cycles of all hydrochemical parameters occurred at a site 1.3 km downstream (LY site). Diel variations in pH, DO, and δ13CDIC were inversely related to diel changes in SpC, DIC, Ca2+, and pCO2. These results indicated that diel cycling of DIC due to in-stream metabolism of submerged aquatic community was still occurring during elevated discharge from rainfall. We estimate the carbon sink through the in-stream metabolism of the submerged aquatic community to be 5.6 kg C/day during the studied rainfall event. These results imply that submerged aquatic communities in a karst stream can significantly stabilize carbon originating from the carbonate rock weathering processes in karst areas.
Effects of aquatic phototrophs on seasonal hydrochemical, inorganic, and organic carbon variations in a typical karst basin, Southwest China

Abstract:Karst processes play an important role in the global carbon cycle. Aquatic phototrophs can transform bicarbonate, which is mainly derived from the weathering of carbonates, into organic carbon. Carbonate mineral weathering coupled with aquatic photosynthesis can be considered a stable and durable carbon sink process. In this study, we addressed seasonal variations in water chemistry in the Lijiang River Basin, which is a typical karst basin, through a comprehensive geochemical study of the river water in four seasons. The parameters were measured in situ, including major ions and isotopes of inorganic and organic carbon. The results showed that (1) DIC was mainly derived from the weathering of carbonates; (2) the transformation from bicarbonate to organic carbon by aquatic phototrophs was evident, and the water chemistry changed, especially in spring and autumn and in the mainstream from Guilin to Yangshuo, which benefited the growth of aquatic phototrophs; and (3) the organic carbon derived from bicarbonates by aquatic phototrophs was nearly half the total organic carbon and 8% of the dissolved inorganic carbon. These results imply that aquatic phototrophs in karst basins can significantly stabilize carbon originating from carbonate rock weathering processes in karst areas.

Abstract:Carbonate mineral weathering coupled with aquatic photosynthesis, herein termed 'coupled carbonate weathering' (CCW), represents a significant carbon sink which is determined by riverine hydrochemical variations. The magnitudes, variations and mechanisms responsible for the carbon sink produced by CCW are still unclear. In this study, major ions, TOC and discharge data at the Darongjiang, Lingqu, Guilin and Yangshuo hydrologic stations in Li River basin, a karst catchment typical of this geographic region, were analysed from January 2012 to December 2015 to elucidate the temporal variations in riverine inorganic and organic carbon and their controlling mechanisms. The results show that (1) HCO3− was sourced from carbonate weathering and silicate weathering, carbonate weathering by carbonic acid being predominant; (2) TOC was created chiefly by the transformation of bicarbonate to organic carbon by aquatic phototrophs during the non-flood period; (3) The carbon sink produced by coupled carbonate weathering in the Li River basin was calculated to be 14.41 tC·km−2·yr−1, comprised of the sink attributable to carbonate weathering (12.17 tC·km−2·yr−1) and sink due to the "biological carbon pump" (SBCP) (2.24 tC·km−2·yr−1). The SBCP thus accounted for approximately 15.54% of the total carbon sink, indicating that the proportion of riverine TOC sourced by the transformation from bicarbonate to organic carbon by aquatic phototrophs may be high and must be considered in the estimation of carbonate weathering-related carbon sinks elsewhere.

Abstract:Riverine carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange is a crucial component of the global carbon cycle. However, the changes in the CO2 sink/source in karst rivers caused by differences in lithological features and climate, hindered the resolution of the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of global inland water carbon emissions. Here, we use hydrochemical data and CO2 gas isotopic data to reveal the spatio-temporal variations of CO2 sink/source in karst rivers and their controlling mechanisms. Fifty-two monitoring transects were set up in the subtropical Lijiang River in southwest China in June and December 2019. Our results indicated that the CO2 flux across the water-air interface (FCO2) in the Lijiang River basin ranged from -43.77 to 519.67 mmol/(m2·d). In June, the Lijiang River acted as an atmospheric carbon source due to higher water temperatures (Twater). However, driven by hydrodynamic conditions and the metabolism of aquatic photosynthesis, the river shifts from being an atmospheric carbon source in June to an atmospheric carbon sink in December. The stable isotopes of CO2 (δ13C-CO2) show significant differences in the spatio-temporal variations of CO2 sink/source. In December, the transects of the Lijiang River basin with a negative CO2 flux are significantly negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen (DO) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration (p < 0.05). This confirms that the enhancement of aquatic photosynthesis efficiency increased water DO concentrations, which resulted in the positive movement of water δ13C-CO2 and a decrease in the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and FCO2. Comparative analysis with global river FCO2 indicates that under the combined driving forces of metabolic processes of aquatic photosynthetic organisms and hydrodynamic conditions, rivers tend to act more frequently as CO2 sinks, particularly in subtropical and temperate rivers. In conclusion, this study represents a new example focusing on CO2 dynamics to address the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of carbon emissions in inland waters on a global scale.

Abstract:Inland waters are crucial in the carbon cycle, contributing significantly to the global CO2 fluxes. Carbonate lakes may act as both sources and sinks of CO2 depending on the interactions between the amount of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) inputs, lake metabolisms, and geochemical processes. It is often difficult to distinguish the dominant mechanisms driving CO2 dynamics and their effects on CO2 emissions. This study was undertaken in three groundwater-fed carbonate-rich lakes in central Spain (Ruidera Lakes), severely polluted with nitrates from agricultural overfertilization. Diel and seasonal (summer and winter) changes in CO2 concentration (CCO2) DIC, and CO2 emissions-(FCO2)-, as well as physical and chemical variables, including primary production and phytoplanktonic chlorophyll-a were measured. In addition, δ13C-DIC, δ13C-CO2 in lake waters, and δ13C of the sedimentary organic matter were measured seasonally to identify the primary CO2 sources and processes. While the lakes were consistently CCO2 supersaturated and FCO2 was released to the atmosphere during both seasons, the highest CCO2 and DIC were in summer (0.36-2.26 µmol L-1). Our results support a strong phosphorus limitation for primary production in these lakes, which impinges on CO2 dynamics. External DIC inputs to the lake waters primarily drive the CCO2 and, therefore, the FCO2. The δ13C-DIC signatures below -12‰ confirmed the primary geogenic influence on DIC. As also suggested by the high values on the calcite saturation index, the Miller-Tans plot revealed that the CO2 source in the lakes was close to the signature provided by the fractionation of δ13C-CO2 from calcite precipitation. Therefore, the main contribution behind the CCO2 values found in these karst lakes should be attributed to the calcite precipitation process, which is temperature-dependent according to the seasonal change observed in δ13C-DIC values. Finally, co-precipitation of phosphate with calcite could partly explain the observed low phytoplankton production in these lakes and the impact on the contribution to increasing greenhouse gas emissions. However, as eutrophication increases and the soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) content increases, the co-precipitation of phosphate is expected to be progressively inhibited. These thresholds must be assessed to understand how the CO32- ions drive lake co-precipitation dynamics. Carbonate regions extend over 15% of the Earth's surface but seem essential in the CO2 dynamics at a global scale.
[Variations of Inorganic Carbon and Its Impact Factors in Surface-Layer Waters in a Groundwater-Fed Reservoir in Karst Area, SW China].

Abstract:In order to understand the inorganic carbon cycle of the groundwater-fed reservoir in karst area, Dalongdong Reservoir, which is located at Shanglin County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, was investigated from 12th to 20th July, 2014. Concentration of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), delta13C of DIC (delta13C(DIC)), partial CO2 pressure (pCO2) and CO2 flux across water-air interface were studied by observation in situ and high-resolution diel monitoring. Results show that: (1) DIC concentration and water pCO2 increased from upstream area to downstream area [DIC(average)): from 122.88 to 172.02 mg x L(-1), pCO2(average) : from 637.91 x 10(-6) to 1399.97 x 10(-6)], while delta13C(DIC) decreased from upstream area to downstream area [delta13C(DIC(average): from -4.34% per hundred to -6.97% per hundred] in the reservoir. (2) CO2 efflux across water-air interface varied from 7.11 to 335.54 mg x (m2 x h)(-1) with mean of 125.03 mg x (m2 x h)(-1) in Dalongdong reservoir surface-layer waters, which was the source of atmospheric CO2. CO2 effluxes across water-air interface in upstream area [mean 131.73 mg x (m2 x h)(-1)] and downstream area [mean 170.25 mg x (m2 x h)(-1)] were higher than that in middle area [mean 116.05 mg x (m2 x h))(-1)] in the reservoir. (3) Water pCO2 and CO2 efflux across water-air interface showed similar characteristics of diel variations, which decreased in daylight and increased in night and showed a negative correlation with chlorophyll a (Chla). Possible reasons of research results are found as follows: (1) DIC concentration, water pCO2 and delta13C(DIC) are influenced by biomass of phytoplankton, turbidity, conductivity, the depth of water and transparency, while CO2 efflux across water-air interface is controlled by both of biomass of phytoplankton and wind speed. (2) Photosynthesis, respiration and vertical motion of phytoplankton possibly affect diel variations of DIC cycle in the groundwater-fed reservoir in karst area.
Predominant biogenic contribution of dissolved inorganic carbon in karst rivers, Southwest China

Abstract:Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) holds significant importance within river systems, particularly in karst regions. The concentration of DIC is intricately linked to both biological processes, such as the respiration of organic matter, and geological processes, notably the strength of carbonate weathering. This dual influence exerts a profound impact on regional and global carbon cycles. However, the precise biological and geological origins of DIC in karst rivers remain a subject of debate. In this study, we delineate the sources of DIC in a typical karst catchment (Houzhai catchment) through isotopic analysis coupled with water chemistry examination. The results showed that δ 13 C DIC and Δ 14 C DIC variations range from −14.0 ‰ to −7.3 ‰ and − 426 ‰ to −31 ‰, respectively, with average values of −10.5 ‰ and − 180 ‰. Results derived from the isotopic mixing model suggest that approximately 83 % of DIC emanates from the soil CO 2 , while 17 % originates from carbonate sources. This indicates that biological processes exert a greater influence on DIC within the study area compared to geological processes. Seasonal variation, exemplified by higher DOC concentrations and Δ 14 C DIC values, alongside with lower DIC concentrations and δ 13 C DIC values during the wet season indicate increased input from biogenic sources, closely related to temperature and moisture conditions. Our study underscores an unbalanced contribution from biogenic and geogenic sources in karst rivers, highlighting potential inaccuracies in past carbon sink flux calculations. The roles of biogenic and geogenic sources in the carbon cycling of karst rivers, as well as their responses to future climate change, warrant a reevaluation.

Responses of water yield and dissolved inorganic carbon export to forest recovery in the Houzhai karst basin, southwest China

Abstract:Abstract Karst terrain (carbonate rocks) covers a vast land of 0.446 million km 2 in southwest China. Water yield and carbonate rocks weathering in this region have been receiving increased attention due to a large‐scale forest recovery. Using both hydrological measurements and forest inventories from 1986 to 2007 in the Houzhai karst basin (HKB), we analyzed the responses of water yield and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) export to forest recovery in southwest China. With implementation of both the Natural Forest Conservation Program (NFCP) and the Conversion of Farmland to Forests Program (CFFP), the fraction of forest area in HKB was increased from near zero to 18.9% during the study period, but the ratio of total water yield (surface and underground) to precipitation varied very little over the annual period, neither in wet season nor in dry season. By contrast, the concentration of DIC in water, especially in the surface water had a pronounced increase during the study period, with an increase of 0.53 and 0.25 g C m −3 yr −1 for surface water and underground water, respectively. As a result, total annual DIC export at mean annual rainfall significantly increased from the low to high forest area stage. This increase was largely driven by surface water during the wet season, presumably being related to biological activity. It was concluded that forest recovery in HKB had no significant effect on water yield, but resulted in more carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) dissolved in karst water accompanying with carbon uptake by forests. Our results suggested that implementations of both NFCP and CFFP had no shifted water yield regimes in southwest China; instead, they might have alleviated global climate change by increasing carbon uptake through combined biological processes and carbonate rocks weathering. Abstract:The coupled carbonate weathering represents a significant carbon sink and can be controlled by the riverine hydrochemical variations. However, magnitudes, variations, and mechanisms responsible for the carbon sink produced by coupled carbonate weathering are unclear. In view of this, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, electrical conductivity, and discharge of the Xijiang River at Wuzhou Hydrologic Gauging Station was recorded during October 2013 to September 2015 to elucidate the temporal variations in riverine hydrochemistry and their controlling mechanisms. To obtain the complete carbon sink flux (CSF) produced by coupled carbonate weathering with terrestrial aquatic photosynthesis in the river basin, the fluxes of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), autochthonous organic carbon (AOC, sourced from the transformation of DIC via aquatic photosynthesis), and sedimentary AOC were all considered. The results show that seasonal hydrochemical variations in the Xijiang River were related not only to dilution effects but also aquatic primary production. These results demonstrate that the variations in discharge caused by rainfall played a dominant role in controlling the variations in the CSF due to the chemostatic behavior of DIC and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The CSF of the Xijiang River produced by coupled carbonate weathering was calculated as 11.06 t C km-2 a-1, including DIC carbon sink flux of 6.56 t C km-2 a-1, AOC flux (FAOC) of 2.25 t C km-2 a-1, and sedimentary AOC flux (FSAOC) of 2.25 t C km-2 a-1. The FAOC and FSAOC together accounted for approximately 69% of DIC carbon sink flux, or approximately 41% of the CSF, indicating that the riverine AOC flux may be high and must be considered in the estimation of rock weathering-related carbon sinks.

Abstract:Riverine transport of carbon from the land to the oceans plays a significant role in global carbon cycle. However, multiple processes can affect aquatic carbon cycling, and the carbon sources and processing in river systems are still elusive. Here, we analysed the water chemistry and dual carbon isotopes (δ13C and Δ14C) of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) from mixed karst and non-karst subtropical monsoonal catchments, southwest China. The water chemistry of the river water showed that DIC concentrations were mainly controlled by carbonate weathering and modulated by agricultural activities and geomorphic characteristics (i.e. elevation and slope), but the stable isotope of DIC (δ13CDIC) was highly affected by CO2 outgassing and in-stream photosynthesis. The C/N ratios and stable isotope of POC (δ13CPOC) indicated that the composition of riverine POC derived from a mixture of terrestrial sources and algae/microbial sources. Based on the δ13C and Δ14C of POC, we used a Bayesian mixing model to constrain the POC sources, which showed that aquatic photosynthesis was the main source for POC. Our findings suggest that carbon dynamics in subtropical rivers are highly affected by aquatic photosynthesis, which has significant implications on carbon cycling within river systems.

Abstract:Whether carbonate weathering on land represents an important terrestrial carbon sink has long been debated as the CO2 sequestered by the dissolution of carbonate may return to the atmosphere through CO2 outgassing from groundwater-feeding surface waters. In headwater area of karst terrain, the CO2 outgassing frequently happens in spring-fed streams, but its flux and influencing factors still remain under-researched. In this study, we conducted a monthly monitoring of hydrochemical and isotopic compositions of stream water along a karst spring-fed creek at Changliushui, SW China that has a steep gradient and in which tufa deposition occurs, in order to explore the process of CO2 outgassing and elucidate the outgassing flux across space and time and its influencing factors. The analyses of downstream geochemical evolution have revealed that two distinguishable types of CO2 outgassing exist along the flow path: (i) outgassing of physically dissolved soil CO2 during the process of carbonate dissolution, as the primary CO2 outgassing, and (ii) an additional outgassing of the CO2 arising from the precipitation of calcite. At a short distance from the spring, the aqueous CO2 escapes from water to a large degree through molecular diffusion driven by high gradient of partial pressure of CO2 (PCO2) between the water and the atmosphere. Such CO2 outgassing concomitantly causes the saturation index with respect to calcite (SIc) to rise, resulting in subsequent calcite precipitation and thus more CO2 outgassing. Spatiotemporal variations in the mass transfer of CO2 and CO2 outgassing flux show that the rates of both types of CO2 outgassing are significantly influenced by hydrodynamic conditions, such as flow discharge and streambed morphology. In particular, lower rates of CO2 outgassing are observed at higher flow discharge, and vice versa. In the studied reach of stream, the primary and additional CO2 outgassing have caused about 21%–35% and 4%–20% of the total soil CO2 sequestered in DIC of the feeding spring water to be released back to the atmosphere, respectively and the higher flow discharge, the less CO2 return. Based on these findings, we postulate that the CO2 outgassing, especially that induced by calcite precipitation should be relatively smaller in streams which have a lower gradient and elevated discharge rate and where the mixing or dilution of tributaries and increased in-stream metabolism occur. This provides more evidence for the previous conclusion that the H2O-carbonate-CO2-aquatic phototroph interaction could represent a net carbon sink at least over short timescales.

Abstract:The evasion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from lakes significantly influences the global carbon equilibrium. Amidst global climatic transformations, the role of Qingzang Plateau (QZP) lakes as carbon (C) sources or sinks remains a subject of debate. Furthermore, accurately quantifying their contribution to the global carbon budget presents a formidable challenge. Here, spanning half a century (1970–2020), we utilize a synthesis of literature and empirical field data to assess the CO 2 exchange flux of QZP lakes. We find markedly higher CO 2 exchange flux in the southeast lakes than that in the northern and western regions from 1970 to 2000. During this time, both freshwater and saltwater lakes served primarily as carbon sources. The annual CO 2 exchange flux was estimated at 2.04 ± 0.37 Tg (Tg) C yr −1 , mainly influenced by temperature fluctuations. The CO 2 exchange flux patterns underwent a geographical inversion between 2000 and 2020, with increased levels in the west and decreased levels in the east. Notably, CO 2 emissions from freshwater lakes diminished, and certain saltwater lakes in the QTP transitioned from carbon sources to sinks. From 2000 to 2020, the annual CO 2 exchange flux from QZP lakes is estimated at 1.34 ± 0.50 Tg C yr −1 , with solar radiation playing a more pronounced role in carbon emissions. Cumulatively, over the past five decades, QZP lakes have generally functioned as carbon sources. Nevertheless, the total annual CO 2 emissions have declined since the year 2000, indicating a potential shift trend from being a carbon source to a sink, mirroring broader patterns of global climate change. These findings not only augment our understanding of the carbon cycle in plateau aquatic systems but also provide crucial data for refining China's carbon budget.

Abstract:Abstract Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) sources, transportation, and transition in inland water bodies have been intensively studied due to their important role in the global carbon cycle. While glacier‐fed lakes play a crucial role in global carbon cycling, related studies are limited. In this study, we investigated the spatiotemporal variability of DIC in the maritime glacier‐fed lakes of the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, identifying the carbon sources and potential controlling factors of DIC pathways The results revealed significant temporal variations in DIC and δ 13 C‐DIC, with averages of 7.29 ± 0.45 mg C L −1 and –8.6 ± 0.2‰ in summer, and 3.40 ± 0.54 mg C L −1 and –7.4 ± 0.6‰ in winter, respectively. Temporal variations in DIC and δ 13 C‐DIC were mainly controlled by carbonates weathering and silicate weathering processes. The chemical weathering reactions facilitate the consumption of dissolved CO 2 . Undersaturated p CO 2 (120.02 ± 29.18 μatm) relative to atmospheric equilibrium suggests considerable capacity for CO 2 uptake within glacier‐fed lakes system. We estimated that the maritime glacier‐fed lakes in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau absorb a total of 9.6 ± 2.7 × 10 −3 Tg C‐CO 2 yr −1 , highlighting their significant contribution to the global carbon budget. The distinctive landscape of the glacier‐fed system and the vulnerable weathering environment result in seasonal and spatial variations of DIC concentration and δ 13 C‐DIC values, as well as the chemical weathering‐induced CO 2 sink in glacier regions. Given the accelerated glacier retreat observed in this area, further studies on the temporal variability of DIC in the water column are urgently needed to identify the mechanisms driving the biogeochemical reactions inside glacier‐fed lake. Our study highlights the unrecognized role of maritime glacier‐fed lakes as CO 2 sinks and emphasizes their significance in regional carbon budgets.

Abstract:The chemical weathering process of carbonate rocks consumes a large quantity of CO2. This has great potential as a carbon sink, and it is one of a significant pathway for achieving carbon neutrality. However, the control mechanisms of karst carbon sink fluxes are unclear, and there is a lack of effective and accurate accounting. We took the Puding Shawan karst water‑carbon cycle test site in China, which has identical initial conditions but different land use types, as the research subject. We used controlled experiments over six years to evaluate the mechanisms for the differences in hydrology, water chemistry, concentrations and fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). We found that the transition from rock to bare soil to grassland led to increases in the DIC concentration by 0.08-0.62 mmol⋅L-1. The inorganic carbon sink flux (CSF) increased by 3.01-5.26 t⋅C⋅km-2⋅a-1, an increase amplitude of 30-70 %. The flux of dissolved organic carbon (FDOC) increase by 0.28 to 0.52 t⋅C⋅km-2⋅a-1, an increase amplitude of 34-90 %. We also assessed the contribution of land use modifications to regional carbon neutrality, it indicate that positive land use modification can significantly regulate the karst carbon sink, with grassland having the greatest carbon sequestration ability. Moreover, in addition to DOC from soil organic matter degradation, DOC production by chemoautotrophic microorganisms utilizing DIC in groundwater may also be a potential source. Thus, coupled studies of the conversion of DIC to DOC processes in groundwater are an important step in assessing karst carbon sink fluxes.

Abstract:Lake carbon (C) cycling is a key component of the global C cycle and associated C source and sink processes. The partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange flux at the lake-air interface (Fc) are controlled by complex physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms. It would be instructively significant to determine whether hydrological processes drive conversion shifts between C sources and sinks in floodplain-lake systems. Findings from this study show that exogenous input and in situ metabolism related to photosynthesis, respiration, and organic matter degradation were the main driving mechanisms of CO2 absorption and release in a large floodplain-lake system (i.e., Lake Poyang). Moreover, the intense and frequent water-level fluctuations inherent to floodplain-lakes may also have a direct or indirect impact on C cycling processes and CO2 exchange rates in floodplain-lake systems via their effect on physical processes, inorganic C transport, in-situ metabolic processes. We confirmed the potential of C source and sink conversion in floodplain-lakes under hydrological fluctuations, and strengthen the understanding of driving mechanisms of C source and sink conversion in floodplain systems.

Abstract:δ13C and D14C measurements on dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), particulate organic carbon (POC) and aquatic plants from a karst spring and two spring-fed ponds in Laqiao, Maolan Township, Libo County, southeastern Guizhou of China in January, July and October of 2013 have been carried out to understand the roles of aquatic photosynthesis through DIC uptake in surface karst waters. The mean D14C and δ13C values of DIC for the spring, midstream pond (MP) and downstream pond (DP) are −26 ± 36‰ and −13 ± 2‰, 6 ± 56‰ and −12 ± 3‰, and 0 ± 64‰ and −9 ± 2‰, respectively. The carbon source for the DIC is mainly from biogenic CO2 rather than the dissolution of limestone rock as the D14C and δ13C of limestone are about −1000‰ and 2‰, respectively. The enrichment trend of D14CDIC and δ13CDIC from the spring to the DP indicates CO2 exchange between atmospheric CO2 and DIC, because D14C and δ13C values of atmospheric CO2 are ca. 50‰ and −8‰, respectively. The average D14CPOC values in the spring, MP and DP were −325‰, −123‰ and −158‰, respectively, which are all lower than these of the DIC in each reservoir. The lower D14C values of the POC may be caused by older soil carbon from surface runoff and dust fall. More aquatic algae were formed through photosynthesis in the stream ponds, especially in summer, shown by strongly increased D14CPOC and evidence of growth in EDS/SEM analyses. Furthermore, the D14C values of the submerged aquatic plants range from −153‰ to −26‰, reflecting that the aquatic plants used DIC for photosynthesis. The D14C value of an emergent plant which uses atmospheric CO2 during photosynthesis is 52.5 ± 0.3‰, equivalent to the atmospheric D14C. Seasonal variations of D14CDIC and δ13CDIC are influenced by soil CO2 input, primary productivity in the ponds, and CO2 exchange; hydrochemical condition show lower D14C values but higher δ13C values in cold/dry season, and vice versa in summer rainy season. A simple mass balance calculation indicates ~90% of carbon for the spring DIC is from biogenic CO2, with higher contribution in summer due to higher productivity. Although this simple calculation may overestimate the biogenic CO2, it indicates that organic decomposition is a major carbon source for DIC in the karst hydrological system. The results of the present study have implications for 14C dating on aquatic plant remains, regional and perhaps global carbon budgets, and the different behaviors of 13C and 14C in karst systems.
