Abstract:This paper analyzes the non-persistent carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) mechanism, and simulates its application in IEEE 802.15.4. We find that throughputs are relevant to the normalized propagation delay and the basic time period (BTP) of slotted CSMA. The throughputs of slotted and unslotted CSMA are almost equal when the normalized propagation delay is much less than 1 and the BTP is equal to the propagation delay. Moreover, for slotted CSMA, the BTP selection should be cautious because an unsuitable BTP will make the performance of the protocol worse. In IEEE 802.15.4, the normalized propagation delay is much less than 1, so it is inappropriate for the usage of a slotted carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) mechanism whose BTP is 20 symbols. Finally, we compare the performance of slotted and unslotted CSMA/CA in IEEE 802.15.4 and verify the conclusion by simulation.

Abstract:The release of IEEE 802.15.4 medium access control and physical layer specifications, employing carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) strategies, represents a significant milestone in promoting deployment of wireless sensor networks. In this study, the authors first analyse the performance of the slotted CSMA/CA strategy specified in the contention access period (CAP) of IEEE 802.15.4 by integrating the discrete-time Markov chain models of the node states and the channel states; and then, extend the Markov chain models by adopting a modification to the CAP. The extended models could be used to analyse the performance of the unslotted CSMA/CA strategy specified in IEEE 802.15.4 as well as that of the slotted CSMA/CA strategy. Extensive simulations demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed models and conclusions. © 2011 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Abstract:The release of IEEE 802.15.4 medium access control (MAC) and physical layer specifications represents a significant milestone in promoting deployment of wireless sensor networks . This paper first analyzes the performance of the contention access period (CAP) specified in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard by integrating the discrete-time Markov chain models of the node states and the channel states. Then a modified CAP is analyzed, which could significantly improve the performance of the system. Based on the theoretical analysis of the CAP and the effect of the modification, we have that in the saturated network of IEEE 802.15.4, the collision probability is large, and the throughput is small. The main reasons are the employment of slotted carrier sense multiple access-collision avoidance and the mechanism that if a frame transmission cannot be completed before the end of the CAP, it has to wait until the start of the next CAP. Thus an enhanced collision-avoidance MAC protocol, which achieves a better performance and is compatible with the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, is proposed to improve the performance of the system. Extensive simulations validate our conclusions.

Abstract:When an IEEE 802.15.4 network has many nodes and is almost saturated, the probability of collision is large, and the throughput is small. The main reasons are the adoption of slotted CSMA/CA and the mechanism that if a data transmission cannot be completed before the end of contention access period (CAP), it has to wait until the start of the CAP in the next superframe. This paper proposes an enhanced collision-avoidance MAC protocol for IEEE 802.15.4, and establishes a simulation model to analyze and compare the enhanced collision-avoidance MAC and the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC. The proposed protocol, compatible with the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol, has less probability of collision (almost 0), higher probability of successful transmission (close to 1), and larger network throughput (more than two times of that of IEEE 802.15.4).

Abstract:Millimeter wave mmWave communication is a promising technology to support high-rate e.g., multi-Gbps multimedia applications because of its large available bandwidth. Multipacket reception is one of the important capabilities of mmWave networks to capture a few packets simultaneously. This capability has the potential to improve medium access control layer performance. Because of the severe propagation loss in mmWave band, traditional backoff mechanisms in carrier sensing multiple access/collision avoidance CSMA/CA designed for narrowband systems can result not only in unfairness but also in significant throughput reduction. This paper proposes a novel backoff mechanism in CSMA/CA by giving a higher transmission probability to the node with a transmission failure than that with a transmission success, aiming to improve the system throughput. The transmission probability is adjusted by changing the contention window size according to the congestion status of each node and the whole network. The analysis demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed backoff mechanism on reducing transmission collisions and increasing network throughput. Extensive simulations show that the proposed backoff mechanism can efficiently utilize network resources and significantly improve the network performance on system throughput and fairness. Abstract:The IEEE 802.15.4 standard is known as the most used technology for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) because of their low rate and especially their energy efficiency. To better support the requirements of Low Energy Critical Infrastructure Monitoring (LECIM) applications, the IEEE 802.15.4k is approved. This amendment is intended for critical packets transmission using the Priority Channel Access (PCA) that has become a real issue in infrastructures applications. The analysis presented in this paper investigates, for the first time in the literature, the performance analysis of the IEEE 802.15.4k in non beacon-enabled mode assuming star topology, saturated traffic and fading channel conditions. Where fading channel is a very important factor in the network as it affects its performance. We emphasize that this is an original work that has never been treated in literature. In this paper, we have developed a two dimensional Markov chain model for the IEEE 802.15.4k unslotted Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) with PCA backoff mechanism, and, a three dimensional Markov chain model for the IEEE 802.15.4k unslotted CSMA/CA mechanism. Furthermore, to test the efficiency of the proposed model, we have analyzed the impact of variation of network size, probability that the available packet is critical, Bit Error Rate (BER), and packet length on the reliability, power consumption and throughput in order to compare the performance of both mechanisms. With the increase of network size and packet length, it is observed that PCA achieves a reduction in energy, a higher throughput and a lower reliability compared to CSMA/CA. The obtained results are satisfactory because packet length and network size are the most important parameters in industrial applications especially in critical systems. Finally, a comparative table was given to compare the behavior of the IEEE 802.15.4k network in terms of performance metrics.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a network where $N$ links contend for the channel using the well-known carrier sense multiple access scheme. By leveraging the notion of stochastic hybrid systems, we find: 1) a closed-form expression of the average age when links generate packets at will 2) an upperbound of the average age when packets arrive stochastically to each link. This upperbound is shown to be generally tight, and to be equal to the average age in certain scenarios. Armed with these expressions, we formulate the problem of minimizing the average age by calibrating the back-off time of each link. Interestingly, we show that the minimum average age is achieved for the same back-off time in both the sampling and stochastic arrivals scenarios. Then, by analyzing its structure, we convert the formulated optimization problem to an equivalent convex problem that we find its optimal solution. Insights on the interaction between links and numerical implementations of the optimized Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) scheme in an IEEE 802.11 environment are presented. Next, to further improve the performance of the optimized CSMA scheme, we propose a modification to it by giving each link the freedom to transition to SLEEP mode. The proposed approach provides a way to reduce the burden on the channel when possible. This leads, as will be shown in the paper, to an improvement in the performance of the network. Simulations results are then laid out to highlight the performance gain offered by our approach in comparison to the optimized standard CSMA scheme.

Abstract:Wireless mesh networks using IEEE 802.15.4 are getting increasingly popular for industrial applications because of low energy consumption and low maintenance costs. The IEEE 802.15.4 standard introduces DSME (Deterministic and Synchronous Multi-channel Extension). DSME uses time-slotted channel access to guarantee timely data delivery, multi-channel communication, and frequency hopping to mitigate the effects of external interferences. A distinguishing feature of DSME is its flexibility and adaptability to time-varying network traffic and to changes in the network topology. In this paper we evaluate the ability of DSME to adapt to time-varying network traffic. We examine the limits for slot allocation rates for different topologies. The evaluation is performed with openDSME, an open-source implementation of DSME.

Abstract:IEEE 802.15.4 protocol is proposed to meet the low latency and energy consumption needs in low-rate wireless applications, however, few analytical models are tractable enough for comprehensive evaluation of the protocol. To evaluate the IEEE 802.15.4 slotted CSMA/CA channel access mechanism in this paper, we propose a practical and accurate discrete Markov chain model, which can dynamically represent different network loads. By computing the steady-state distribution probability of the Markov chain, we obtain an evaluation formula for throughput, energy consumption, and access latency. Then we further analyze the parameters that influence performance including packet arrival rate, initial backoff exponent and maximum backoff number. Finally, NS2 simulator has been used to evaluate the performance of the 802.15.4 CSMA/CA mechanism under different scenarios and to validate the accuracy of the proposed model.

Abstract:IEEE 802.15 (TM) working group has designed the IEEE Std. 802.15.4 to target the low-rate wireless personal area network (LR-WPAN) which is characterized by low complexity, low cost and low power. The IEEE Std. 802.15.4 specifies operations of the physical layer (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) sublayer. These standards are to ensure acceptable system performance in terms of network PHY collisions, MAC collisions, throughput, average transmission delay, and energy efficiency. Yet there axe a number of factors that may affect the system performance, including beacon order (BO), backoff exponent (BE), contention window (CW), existence of hidden terminal problem, and existence of acknowledgement (ACK) mechanism. Understanding the impacts of these factors is of great importance in system design to improve performance. These impacts are examined numerically via network simulator (ns-2) in the current work, which leads to some nontrivial findings.

Abstract:We study medium access in FMCW radar networks. We assume that all the radars use same parameters, e.g., chirp duration, chirp slope, cutoff frequency, number of chirps per packet, etc, and propose and analyze slotted ALOHA and CSMA protocols to mitigate narrowband interference. We define a notion of throughput to quantify the performance of the proposed protocols. In the case of ALOHA, we analyze interference probability and throughput as functions of the system parameters. We observe that interference probability and throughput may behave differently than in wireless communication networks. For instance, if the number of chirps per packet is larger than one, the interference probabilities may be smaller for higher transmission rates. We define a medium sensing procedure, referred to as clear channel assessment (CCA), as a part of the proposed CSMA, and also define CCA success and failure events. In CSMA, the radars transmit only after a successful CCA. We study, CCA success probability, interference probability and throughput as functions of the system parameters. We observe that, unlike wireless communication networks, using the highest possible attempt rates may maximize throughput in few network scenarios. We perform an extensive simulation to verify our analytical results and to compare slotted ALOHA and CSMA. We observe that CSMA outperforms ALOHA in all realistic scenarios.

Dynamic Priority Backoff Algorithm for IEEE802.11 DCF

Abstract:The Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) in the IEEE 802.11 protocol is a random access scheme based on the carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA). In recent years, there have been numerous research on the performance analysis and model of DCF under the assumption that the transmission queue is always nonempty (i.e. saturation state). In this paper, we propose a dynamic priority backoff algorithm (DPBA) for IEEE 802.11 DCF, the basic idea of DPBA is each node should collect statistical data of other node’s transmission while sensing the channel, and maintaining a sending data table for all node in network. When the node has data to transmit, it will calculate the dynamic priority and connection window according to the number of successful sending, the number of successful sending and the statistical data in sending table. Simulation results show that DPBA can properly assign channel among nodes in proportion to their dynamic priority as well as enhance the network saturation throughput.

Abstract:Carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) has been adopted by the IEEE 802.11 standards for wireless local area networks (WLANs). Using a distributed coordination function (DCF), the CSMA/CA protocol reduces collisions and improves the overall throughput. To mitigate fairness issues arising with CSMA/CA, we develop a modified version that we term CSMA with copying collision avoidance (CSMA/CCA). A station in CSMA/CCA contends for the shared wireless medium by employing a binary exponential backoff similar to CSMA/CA. Different from CSMA/CA, CSMA/CCA copies the contention window (CW) size piggybacked in the MAC header of an overheard data frame within its basic service set (BSS) and updates its backoff counter according to the new CW size. Simulations carried out in several WLAN configurations illustrate that CSMA/CCA improves fairness relative to CSMA/CA and offers considerable advantages for deployment in the 802.11-standard-based WLANs.
On the Stability of Two-User Slotted ALOHA with Channel-Aware and Cooperative Users

Abstract:The stability region of the two-user slotted ALOHA system is analyzed under two scenarios: the case with channel- aware transmission control and the case with user cooperation. By exploiting these advantages in the physical layer, we show that the system throughput can be significantly increased with cross- layered designs on the medium access control (MAC) protocol that take into consideration the properties of these technologies. Suppose that the users transmit over a wireless fading channel and that the channel state information (CSI) is available to the users at the beginning of each time slot. We first study the case where each user transmits with a transmission probability that depends on their local CSI. In this case, we show that the optimal transmission control takes on the form of a thresholding function where each user transmits with probability 1 if the channel is above a certain quality; and with probability 0, otherwise. The stability region of the slotted ALOHA system is significantly enlarged with the use of channel-aware transmission control functions. Secondly, we study the case with user cooperation, where each user is allowed to receive and relay the information of the other user. We derive inner bounds on the stability region for cooperative system and show the significant improvements over the case without cooperation.

Abstract:QoS provisioning for video streaming over 802.11 home networks is challenging due to the tight bandwidth and delay constraints. Currently, both 802.11e HCCA and EDCA have their disadvantages when delivering video over 802.11 networks. EDCA exhibits degraded QoS performance for increased number of stations, while HCCA has high complexity, and also suffers from the impact of inter-cell interference. In this paper, we propose a new backoff mechanism which is fundamentally different from traditional random backoff methods in 802.11. The mechanism achieves resource reservation by reusing one or multiple time slots for transmission in consecutive backoff cycles. The basic idea is borrowed from R-ALOHA, but several modifications are made to allow it to work in the context of CSMA network. An additive increase multiplicative decrease based algorithm is proposed to control resource allocation for video streaming in the 802.11 network. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the method and the algorithm.

Abstract:As a result of the recent advances in physical (PHY) layer communication techniques, it is possible to receive multiple packets at the receiver concurrently. This capability of a receiver to decode multiple simultaneous transmissions is known as multi-packet reception (MPR). In this paper, we propose a simple Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for an MPR wireless channel, where we modify the backoff procedure as a function of number of ongoing transmissions in the channel. Our protocol is backward compatible with the IEEE 802.11 DCF protocol. The performance analysis of the proposed protocol is carried out using extensive simulations and it is compared with some of the existing MPR MAC protocols. The proposed mechanism improves the throughput and delay performance of the IEEE 802.11 DCF.

Abstract:This paper proposes a semi-random backoff (SRB) method that enables resource reservation in contention-based wireless LANs. The proposed SRB is fundamentally different from traditional random backoff methods because it provides an easy migration path from random backoffs to deterministic slot assignments. The central idea of the SRB is for the wireless station to set its backoff counter to a deterministic value upon a successful packet transmission. This deterministic value will allow the station to reuse the time-slot in consecutive backoff cycles. When multiple stations with successful packet transmissions reuse their respective time-slots, the collision probability is reduced, and the channel achieves the equivalence of resource reservation. In case of a failed packet transmission, a station will revert to the standard random backoff method and probe for a new available time-slot. The proposed SRB method can be readily applied to both 802.11 DCF and 802.11e EDCA networks with minimum modification to the existing DCF/EDCA implementations. Theoretical analysis and simulation results validate the superior performance of the SRB for small-scale and heavily loaded wireless LANs. When combined with an adaptive mechanism and a persistent backoff process, SRB can also be effective for large-scale and lightly loaded wireless networks.

Abstract:In conventional backscatter communication (BackCom) systems, time division multiple access (TDMA) and frequency division multiple access (FDMA) are generally adopted for multiuser backscattering due to their simplicity in implementation. However, as the number of backscatter devices (BDs) proliferates, there will be a high overhead under the traditional centralized control techniques, and the inter-user coordination is unaffordable for the passive BDs, which are of scarce concern in existing works and remain unsolved. To this end, in this paper, we propose a slotted ALOHA-based random access for BackCom systems, in which each BD is randomly chosen and is allowed to coexist with one active device for hybrid multiple access. To excavate and evaluate the performance, a resource allocation problem for max-min transmission rate is formulated, where transmit antenna selection, receive beamforming design, reflection coefficient adjustment, power control, and access probability determination are jointly considered. To deal with this intractable problem, we first transform the objective function with the max-min form into an equivalent linear one, and then decompose the resulting problem into three sub-problems. Next, a block coordinate descent (BCD)-based greedy algorithm with a penalty function, successive convex approximation, and linear programming are designed to obtain sub-optimal solutions for tractable analysis. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms benchmark algorithms in terms of transmission rate and fairness.

Abstract:In this paper, an analytical model for the beacon-enabled slotted CSMA-CA mechanism of IEEE 802.15.4 wireless sensor network is designed. The current mechanism of IEEE 802.15.4 CSMA-CA is extended to include the retransmission limit of the nodes with packet collision probability. A three-dimensional discrete time Markov chain model for the uplink traffic of wireless sensor network is designed to analyze the energy consumption and throughput of the nodes under unsaturated traffic conditions. The energy consumption and throughput are analyzed for different node numbers and data rates to estimate the possible number of nodes for the better performance in terms of throughput.
