Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive cooperative medium access control (MAC) protocol, called ACoopMAC, that adopts new frame control formats and is completely backward compatible with the legacy IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF). To adapt to dynamic channel variation and network topology, the sender selects either direct transmission or cooperative transmission adaptively based on the instantaneous channel measurements. An extended analytical model based on elementary conditional probability is adopted to evaluate throughput and average delay performance of our proposed protocol. Analytical and simulation results show that ACoopMAC can improve the throughput performance and substantially reduce system delay, compared to CoopMAC protocol.
Improving the MAC layer performance of Ad Hoc Networks by congestion control algorithms

Abstract:Wireless Ad Hoc Networks have experienced great improvement over the past decade. However, IEEE 802.11 DCF, as the standard for Ad Hoc Networks, is still greatly influenced by hidden and exposed node problems. Lots of researches have been performed to solve them, but only a few of them have addressed the tradeoff between the two problems. This paper tries to balance the two problems by distributed terminal coordination. We will present two MAC schemes that import the concept of congestion control algorithms. A model between carrier sensing range and congestion window size is established. According to the simulation results, it is shown that these schemes can achieve good MAC layer performance in terms of one-hop throughput, fairness and speed of throughput convergence.

Abstract:When an IEEE 802.15.4 network has many nodes and is almost saturated, the probability of collision is large, and the throughput is small. The main reasons are the adoption of slotted CSMA/CA and the mechanism that if a data transmission cannot be completed before the end of contention access period (CAP), it has to wait until the start of the CAP in the next superframe. This paper proposes an enhanced collision-avoidance MAC protocol for IEEE 802.15.4, and establishes a simulation model to analyze and compare the enhanced collision-avoidance MAC and the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC. The proposed protocol, compatible with the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol, has less probability of collision (almost 0), higher probability of successful transmission (close to 1), and larger network throughput (more than two times of that of IEEE 802.15.4).

Abstract:Millimeter wave mmWave communication is a promising technology to support high-rate e.g., multi-Gbps multimedia applications because of its large available bandwidth. Multipacket reception is one of the important capabilities of mmWave networks to capture a few packets simultaneously. This capability has the potential to improve medium access control layer performance. Because of the severe propagation loss in mmWave band, traditional backoff mechanisms in carrier sensing multiple access/collision avoidance CSMA/CA designed for narrowband systems can result not only in unfairness but also in significant throughput reduction. This paper proposes a novel backoff mechanism in CSMA/CA by giving a higher transmission probability to the node with a transmission failure than that with a transmission success, aiming to improve the system throughput. The transmission probability is adjusted by changing the contention window size according to the congestion status of each node and the whole network. The analysis demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed backoff mechanism on reducing transmission collisions and increasing network throughput. Extensive simulations show that the proposed backoff mechanism can efficiently utilize network resources and significantly improve the network performance on system throughput and fairness. Abstract:Based on the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) and the Enhanced DCF (EDCF) mechanisms in IEEE 802.11 and 802.11e, a novel backoff scheme for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is proposed. The scheme is to solve the problem of the packet loss and the decrease of performance due to the increasing Contention Window (CW) when there are continuous collisions. In the proposed scheme, the CW of the packet will change dynamically with different delay for the different traffics. Mathematic formulas are presented to indicate the relationship between the CW and the delay character. The performance of the new scheme is also discussed with simulation results. The results show that it helps WLAN system handle multimedia simultaneously.

Abstract:With the rapid development of WLAN, a surge in the number of network users and high-speed data exchange highlight the importance of efficient initial access of MAC layer. The majority of initial access of MAC layer is based on ALOHA or CSMA/CA. With the increase of network traffic, the number of collisions is growing rapidly, resulting in speedy decreasing access success rate and normalized throughput. This paper proposes an optimized initial access of MAC layer based on CSMA/CA, optimizing the backoff time calculation algorithm and the partition of Contention Window. A novel parameter named Collision Probability Factor is introduced to calculate the backoff time auxiliary based on channel status. Moreover, we propose a novel initial access procedure to ensure the timely transmission of high priority data. Simulation results show the effectiveness of proposed optimized approach. The stable value of normalized throughput increases from 0.25 to 0.39. And the success rate increases from 12.9% to 30.0% under heavy traffic, while collision probability reduces by 41.9%.

Abstract:As a result of the recent advances in physical (PHY) layer communication techniques, it is possible to receive multiple packets at the receiver concurrently. This capability of a receiver to decode multiple simultaneous transmissions is known as multi-packet reception (MPR). In this paper, we propose a simple Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for an MPR wireless channel, where we modify the backoff procedure as a function of number of ongoing transmissions in the channel. Our protocol is backward compatible with the IEEE 802.11 DCF protocol. The performance analysis of the proposed protocol is carried out using extensive simulations and it is compared with some of the existing MPR MAC protocols. The proposed mechanism improves the throughput and delay performance of the IEEE 802.11 DCF.

Abstract:The Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) in the IEEE 802.11 protocol is a random access scheme based on the carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA). In recent years, there have been numerous research on the performance analysis and model of DCF under the assumption that the transmission queue is always nonempty (i.e. saturation state). In this paper, we propose a dynamic priority backoff algorithm (DPBA) for IEEE 802.11 DCF, the basic idea of DPBA is each node should collect statistical data of other node’s transmission while sensing the channel, and maintaining a sending data table for all node in network. When the node has data to transmit, it will calculate the dynamic priority and connection window according to the number of successful sending, the number of successful sending and the statistical data in sending table. Simulation results show that DPBA can properly assign channel among nodes in proportion to their dynamic priority as well as enhance the network saturation throughput.
RTS/CTS mechanism with refined adaptive contention window for distributed coordination function in IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol

Abstract:The basic MAC technique of IEEE 802.11 is called DCF, and optional RTS/CTS access technique is defined to improve the system performance, and which is proven that, the RTS/CTS mechanism is superior in most of the cases. In this paper, we refine RTS/CTS scheme with an ACW algorithm to reduce the collision probability of RTS, by means of adapting the CW dynamically according to the collision of RTS. Our simulations indicate that our refined scheme can achieve high performance in DCF, and even higher performance especially in QoS Enhanced EDCF proposal.

Abstract:Carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) has been adopted by the IEEE 802.11 standards for wireless local area networks (WLANs). Using a distributed coordination function (DCF), the CSMA/CA protocol reduces collisions and improves the overall throughput. To mitigate fairness issues arising with CSMA/CA, we develop a modified version that we term CSMA with copying collision avoidance (CSMA/CCA). A station in CSMA/CCA contends for the shared wireless medium by employing a binary exponential backoff similar to CSMA/CA. Different from CSMA/CA, CSMA/CCA copies the contention window (CW) size piggybacked in the MAC header of an overheard data frame within its basic service set (BSS) and updates its backoff counter according to the new CW size. Simulations carried out in several WLAN configurations illustrate that CSMA/CCA improves fairness relative to CSMA/CA and offers considerable advantages for deployment in the 802.11-standard-based WLANs.

Abstract:IEEE 802.15.7 Visible Light Communication (VLC) networks suffer from performance degradation caused by the hidden device collisions due to the directional transmission with narrow beamwidth. One of the solutions for mitigating the hidden device collisions is to employ a full-duplex transmission technique. As a side effect of the full-duplex transmission in the VLC networks, however, the data-packet discard due to the retransmission limitation occurs frequently in the networks. This paper proposes an improved backoff scheme and its performance analysis to suppress the packet discard. The proposed backoff scheme increases the Backoff Exponent (BE) and the Number of Backoff stage (NB) in IEEE 802.15.7 only when the data packet transmission fails. To evaluate the system performance theoretically, this paper also provides the Markov-chain model for channel access with the proposed scheme. The performance evaluations through simulation and theoretical analysis show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:This paper focuses on contention-based Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols used in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). We propose a novel MAC protocol called Adaptive Backoff Tuning MAC (ABTMAC) based on IEEE 802.11 DCF. In our proposed MAC protocol, we utilize a fixed transmission attempt rate and each node dynamically adjusts its backoff window size considering the current network status. We determined the appropriate transmission attempt rate for both cases where the Request-To-Send/Clear-To-Send (RTS/CTS) mechanism was and was not employed. Robustness against performance degradation caused by the difference between desired and actual values of the attempt rate parameter is considered when setting it. The performance of the protocol is evaluated analytically and through simulations. These results indicate that a wireless network utilizing ABTMAC performs better than one using IEEE 802.11 DCF.

Abstract:IEEE 802.11 is the de facto standard for medium access over wireless ad hoc network. The collision avoidance mechanism (i.e., random binary exponential backoff-BEB) of IEEE 802.11 DCF (distributed coordination function) is inefficient and unfair especially under heavy load. In the literature, many algorithms have been proposed to tune the contention window (CW) size. However, these algorithms make every node select its backoff interval between [0, CW] in a random and uniform manner. This randomness is incorporated to avoid collisions among the nodes. But this random backoff interval can change the optimal order and frequency of channel access among competing nodes which results in unfairness and increased delay. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that schedules the medium access in a fair and effective manner. This algorithm enhances IEEE 802.11 DCF with additional level of contention resolution that prioritizes the contending nodes according to its queue length and waiting time. Each node computes its unique backoff interval using fuzzy logic based on the input parameters collected from contending nodes through overhearing. We evaluate our algorithm against IEEE 802.11, GDCF (gentle distributed coordination function) protocols using ns-2.35 simulator and show that our algorithm achieves good performance.

Abstract:According to the problem that competing node number estimation algorithm of the optimal enhanced IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function(DCF) protocol is complex and imprecise, this paper proposes a Self-Adaptive Contention Window Adjustment(SACWA) scheme.It is proved that the saturation throughput is almost independent of the competing node number when the collision probability keeps invariable, which is the theoretic foundation of this protocol.Simulation results demonstrate that SACWA can achieve nearly optimal saturation throughput no matter the node number keeps stable or changes rapidly.

Abstract:This paper proposes a semi-random backoff (SRB) method that enables resource reservation in contention-based wireless LANs. The proposed SRB is fundamentally different from traditional random backoff methods because it provides an easy migration path from random backoffs to deterministic slot assignments. The central idea of the SRB is for the wireless station to set its backoff counter to a deterministic value upon a successful packet transmission. This deterministic value will allow the station to reuse the time-slot in consecutive backoff cycles. When multiple stations with successful packet transmissions reuse their respective time-slots, the collision probability is reduced, and the channel achieves the equivalence of resource reservation. In case of a failed packet transmission, a station will revert to the standard random backoff method and probe for a new available time-slot. The proposed SRB method can be readily applied to both 802.11 DCF and 802.11e EDCA networks with minimum modification to the existing DCF/EDCA implementations. Theoretical analysis and simulation results validate the superior performance of the SRB for small-scale and heavily loaded wireless LANs. When combined with an adaptive mechanism and a persistent backoff process, SRB can also be effective for large-scale and lightly loaded wireless networks.

Abstract:IEEE 802.11p is the standard for PHY and MAC protocol that the IEEE workgroups made for VANETs.According to the main features of vehicular networks such as the high speed and dynamic network topology,the ratio of the loss packets is increasing.In order to reslove the unfairness problem of channel access and decrease the loss ratio,proposed a relative-speed-based self-adaptive backoff algorithm(RSBA).Based on the deviation of the relative speeds,the backoff mechanism got optimized.Through simulation with NCTUns,RSBA is proved to decrease the ratio of dropped packets,enhance the fairness of channel access and help improving the performance of the IEEE 802.11p MAC protocol.

Abstract:In the IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard, the backoff algorithm assumes that all losses are due to collisions, while the automatic rate fallback algorithm assumes that all losses are due to link errors. The coexistence of these two types of losses in real networks reduces the efficiency of currently used algorithms. We propose a loss-distinguishable MAC layer protocol for 802.11 WLAN. No PHY layer modification is needed. Analysis shows that the new protocol is effective and has negligible overhead.
