Abstract:There are five types of platonic polyhedron and thirteen types of archimedean polyhedron. Any vertices of anyone of them are in a ball surface, and they have the same side length. The geometry characters of them are summurized. Using the CAD technique, some new forms of polyhedron space structures are designed. Design methods for space structures of polyhedron forms are put forward.

Abstract:We analyze polyhedra composed of hexagons and triangles with three faces around each vertex, and their 3-regular planar graphs of edges and vertices, which we call "trihexes". Trihexes are analogous to fullerenes, which are 3-regular planar graphs whose faces are all hexagons and pentagons. Every trihex can be represented as the quotient of a hexagonal tiling of the plane under a group of isometries generated by rotations. Every trihex can also be described with either one or three "signatures": triples of numbers that describe the arrangement of the rotocenters of these rotations. Simple arithmetic rules relate the three signatures that describe the same trihex. We obtain a bijection between trihexes and equivalence classes of signatures as defined by these rules. Labeling trihexes with signatures allows us to put bounds on the number of trihexes for a given number of vertices v in terms of the prime factorization of v and to prove a conjecture concerning trihexes that have no "belts" of hexagons.

Abstract:Kedlaya, Kolpakov, Poonen, and Rubinstein classified tetrahedra all of whose dihedral angles are rational multiples of $\pi$ into two one-parameter families (a Hill family and a new family) and $59$ sporadic tetrahedra. In this paper, we consider which of them tile space; we show that every member of the Hill family, exactly one member of the new family, and at most $40$ sporadic tetrahedra tile space. As a corollary, we disprove the converse of Debrunner's theorem, showing that not all Dehn invariant zero tetrahedra tile space.

Abstract:A longstanding open problem asks for an aperiodic monotile, also known as an "einstein": a shape that admits tilings of the plane, but never periodic tilings. We answer this problem for topological disk tiles by exhibiting a continuum of combinatorially equivalent aperiodic polygons. We first show that a representative example, the "hat" polykite, can form clusters called "metatiles", for which substitution rules can be defined. Because the metatiles admit tilings of the plane, so too does the hat. We then prove that generic members of our continuum of polygons are aperiodic, through a new kind of geometric incommensurability argument. Separately, we give a combinatorial, computer-assisted proof that the hat must form hierarchical -- and hence aperiodic -- tilings.

Abstract:This paper proves the following statement: If a convex body can form a fivefold translative tiling in $\mathbb{E}^3$, it must be a parallelotope, a hexagonal prism, a rhombic dodecahedron, an elongated dodecahedron, a truncated octahedron, a cylinder over a particular octagon, or a cylinder over a particular decagon, where the octagon and the decagon are fivefold translative tiles in $\mathbb{E}^2$. Furthermore, it presents an example of multiple tiles in $\mathbb{E}^3$ with multiplicity at most 10 which is neither a parallelohedron nor a cylinder.

Abstract:The bonding and stability of MgSi and AlMgSi compounds relevant to AlMgSi alloys is investigated with the use of (L)APW+(lo) DFT calculations. We show that the $\beta$ and $\beta''$ phases found in the precipitation sequence are characterised by the presence of covalent bonds between Si-Si nearest neighbour pairs and covalent/ionic bonds between Mg-Si nearest neighbour pairs. We then investigate the stability of two recently discovered precipitate phases, U1 and U2, both containing Al in addition to Mg and Si. We show that both phases are characterised by tightly bound Al-Si networks, made possible by a transfer of charge from the Mg atoms.

Abstract:The tilings of the 2-dimensional sphere by congruent triangles have been extensively studied, and the edge-to-edge tilings have been completely classified. However, not much is known about the tilings by other congruent polygons. In this paper, we classify the simplest case, which is the edge-to-edge tilings of the 2-dimensional sphere by 12 congruent pentagons. We find one major class allowing two independent continuous parameters and four classes of isolated examples. The classification is done by first separately classifying the combinatorial, edge length, and angle aspects, and then combining the respective classifications together.

Polyominoes Simulating Arbitrary-Neighborhood Zippers and Tilings

Abstract:This paper provides a bridge between the classical tiling theory and the complex neighborhood self-assembling situations that exist in practice. The neighborhood of a position in the plane is the set of coordinates which are considered adjacent to it. This includes classical neighborhoods of size four, as well as arbitrarily complex neighborhoods. A generalized tile system consists of a set of tiles, a neighborhood, and a relation which dictates which are the "admissible" neighboring tiles of a given tile. Thus, in correctly formed assemblies, tiles are assigned positions of the plane in accordance to this relation. We prove that any validly tiled path defined in a given but arbitrary neighborhood (a zipper) can be simulated by a simple "ribbon" of microtiles. A ribbon is a special kind of polyomino, consisting of a non-self-crossing sequence of tiles on the plane, in which successive tiles stick along their adjacent edge. Finally, we extend this construction to the case of traditional tilings, proving that we can simulate arbitrary-neighborhood tilings by simple-neighborhood tilings, while preserving some of their essential properties.

Abstract:A quasiperiodic 7-fold rhombic tiling is constructed with an iterative substitution scheme. The inflation factor is 5.04892..., the square of the longer diagonal of a regular heptagon. There are many substitutions possible that fill larger similar tiles with three base shapes but finding the matching rules (how the larger tiles fit together to make even larger tiles) turns into a challenging puzzle. At the end, a new solution is found with seven substitution rules. The relationship to a higher-order Fibonacci series is explored. The tiling is presented with a celestial theme reminiscent of a starry night.

Abstract:The art of tiling originated very early in the history of civilization. Almost every known human society has made use of tilings in some form or another. In particular, tilings using only regular polygons have great visual appeal. Decorated regular tilings with continuous and symmetrical patterns were widely used in decoration field, such as mosaics, pavements, and brick walls. In science, these tilings provide inspiration for synthetic organic chemistry. Building on previous CG&A “Beautiful Math” articles, the authors propose an invariant mapping method to create colorful patterns on Archimedean tilings (1-uniform tilings). The resulting patterns simultaneously have global crystallographic symmetry and local cyclic or dihedral symmetry.

Abstract:How many different tiles are needed at the minimum to create aperiodicity? Several tilings made of two tiles were discovered, the first one being by Penrose in the seventies. Since then, scientists discovered other aperiodic tilings made of two tiles, including the square-triangle one, a tiling that has been particularly useful for the study of dodecagonal quasicrystals and soft matters. An open problem still exists: Can one tile be sufficient to create aperiodicity? This is known as the ein stein problem. We present in this paper an aperiodic tiling made of one single tile: an isosceles right triangle. The tile itself is not aperiodic and therefore not a solution to the ein stein problem but we present a set of substitution rules on the same tile that forces the tiling to be aperiodic. This paper presents its construction rules that proves its aperiodicity. We also show that this tiling offers an underlying dodecagonal structure close to the one of square-triangle tiling.

Abstract:Steffen's polyhedron was believed to have the least number of vertices among polyhedra that can flex without self-intersections. Maksimov clarified that the pentagonal bipyramid with one face subdivided into three is the only polyhedron with fewer vertices for which the existence of a self-intersection-free flex was open. Since subdividing a face into three does not change the mobility, we focus on flexible pentagonal bipyramids. When a bipyramid flexes, the distance between the two opposite vertices of the two pyramids changes; associating the position of the bipyramid to this distance yields an algebraic map that determines a nontrivial extension of rational function fields. We classify flexible pentagonal bipyramids with respect to the Galois group of this field extension and provide examples for each class, building on a construction proposed by Nelson. Surprisingly, one of our constructions yields a flexible pentagonal bipyramid that can be extended to an embedded flexible polyhedron with 8 vertices. The latter hence solves the open question.

Abstract:In 1966, Zalgaller completed the task of determining all edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by regular spherical polygons, proving that the only possibilities are the Platonic tilings, the Archimedean tilings, the Johnson tilings, the prism and anti-prism tilings and two tiles sharing their boundaries. We determine all non-edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by regular spherical polygons of three or more sides, showing there are five continuous families of kaleidoscope tilings, fifteen continuous families of 2-hemisphere tilings, four lunar tilings, five sporadic tilings, five composed tilings and one magic triangle tiling.

Abstract:Polypolyhedra (after R. Lang) are compounds of edge-transitive 1-skeleta. There are 54 topologically different polypolyhedra, and each has icosidodecahedral, cuboctahedral, or tetrahedral symmetry, all are realizable as modular origami models with one module per skeleton edge. Consider a coloring in which each edge of a given component receives a different color, and where the coloring (up to global color permutation) is invariant under the polypolyhedron's symmetry group. On the Five Intersecting Tetrahedra, the edges of each color form visual bands on the model, and correspond to matchings on the dodecahedron graph. We count the number of such colorings and give three proofs. For each of the non-polygon-component polypolyhedra, there is a corresponding matching coloring, and we count the number of these matching colorings. For some of the non-polygon-component polypolyhedra, there is a corresponding visual-band coloring, and we count the number of these band colorings.

Abstract:Compact polyhedra of cubic point symmetry Oh, exhibit surfaces of planar sections (facets) characterized by normal vector families {abc} with up to 48 members each, compatible with Oh symmetry. We focus first on polyhedra confined by facets with normal vectors of one family, {100}, {110}, and {111}, separately. This yields generic polyhedra which serve for the definition of general compact polyhedra as intersections of the three generic species. Their structural properties, such as shape, size, volume, and surface facets, are found to be described by only three polyhedral structure parameters A, B, C. In addition, we examine compact polyhedra exhibiting facets defined by normal vectors of only one general {abc} family resulting in up to 48 facets. These polyhedra can be described by four polyhedral structure parameters Q, a, b, c. Geometrical properties of all polyhedra are discussed in analytical detail and substantiated by visualization of characteristic examples. Corresponding relationships can also be used to classify shapes and estimate sizes of real compact metal nanoparticles observed e.g. in electron microscopy experiments.

Constructing Interlocking Assemblies with Crystallographic Symmetries

Abstract:This work presents a construction method for interlocking assemblies based on planar crystallographic symmetries. Planar crystallographic groups, also known as wallpaper groups, correspond to tessellations of the plane with a tile, called a fundamental domain, such that the action of the group can be used to tessellate the plane with the given tile. The main idea of this method is to extend the action of a wallpaper group so that it acts on three-dimensional space and places two fundamental domains into parallel planes. Next, we interpolate between these domains to obtain a block that serves as a candidate for interlocking assemblies. We show that the resulting blocks can be triangulated, and we can also approximate blocks with smooth surfaces using this approach. Finally, we show that there exists a family of blocks derived from this construction that can be tiled in multiple ways, characterised by generalised Truchet tiles. The assemblies of one block in this family, which we call RhomBlock, correspond to tessellations with lozenges.
