Abstract:We give the generating function for the index of integer lattice points, relative to a finite order ideal. The index is an important concept in the theory of border bases, an alternative to Gr\"obner bases.

Abstract:We use the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula to calculate the Hirzebruch ?y genus Xy(S[n]), where S[n] is the Hilbert scheme of points of length n of a surface S. Combinatorial interpretation of the weights of the fixed points of the natural torus action on ( 2)[n] is used. This is the first step to prove a conjectural formula about the elliptic genus of the Hilbert schemes.

Abstract:We study a family of moduli spaces and corresponding quantum invariants introduced recently by Fan-Jarvis-Ruan. The family has a wall-and-chamber structure relative to a positive rational parameter is an element of. For a Fermat quasi-homogeneous polynomial W (not necessarily of Calabi-Yau type), we study natural generating functions packaging the invariants. Our wall-crossing formula relates the generating functions by showing that they all lie on the Lagrangian cone associated to the Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory of W. For arbitrarily small parameter is an element of, a specialization of our generating function is a hypergeometric series called the big I-function which determines the entire Lagrangian cone. As a special case of our wall-crossing, we obtain a new geometric interpretation of the Landau-Ginzburg mirror theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize the notion of border bases of zero-dimensional polynomial ideals to the module setting. To this end, we introduce order modules as a generalization of order ideals and module border bases of submodules with finite codimension in a free module as a generalization of border bases of zero-dimensional ideals in the first part of this paper. In particular, we extend the division algorithm for border bases to the module setting, show the existence and uniqueness of module border bases, and characterize module border bases analogously like border bases via the special generation property, border form modules, rewrite rules, commuting matrices, and liftings of border syzygies. Furthermore, we deduce Buchberger's Criterion for Module Border Bases and give an algorithm for the computation of module border bases that uses linear algebra techniques. In the second part, we further generalize the notion of module border bases to quotient modules. We then show the connection between quotient module border bases and special module border bases and deduce characterizations similar to the ones for module border bases. Moreover, we give an algorithm for the computation of quotient module border bases using linear algebra techniques, again. At last, we prove that subideal border bases are isomorphic to special quotient module border bases. This isomorphy immediately yields characterizations and an algorithm for the computation of subideal border bases.

Abstract:We study the electronic properties of the generalized Fibonacci lattices generated by the inflation rule (A, B) --> (AB(n), A) with n > 1. A unified real-space renormalization-group scheme is presented for calculating the exact local Green's function at any given site. Analysis suggests that there are extended states in these lattices. Furthermore, the appearance of the extended states and the smoothness of the local density of states depends on the system parameters, implying that these exists a state transition phenomenon similar to that of the incommensurate Harper's model.

Abstract:We extend the theory and the algorithms of Border Bases to systems of Laurent polynomial equations, defining "toric" roots. Instead of introducing new variables and new relations to saturate by the variable inverses, we propose a more efficient approach which works directly with the variables and their inverse. We show that the commutation relations and the inversion relations characterize toric border bases. We explicitly describe the first syzygy module associated to a toric border basis in terms of these relations. Finally, a new border basis algorithm for Laurent polynomials is described and a proof of its termination is given for zero-dimensional toric ideals.

Abstract:We show that a recent identity of Beck–Gessel–Lee–Savage on the generating function of symmetrically constrained compositions of integers generalizes naturally to a family of convex polyhedral cones that are invariant under the action of a finite reflection group. We obtain general expressions for the multivariate generating functions of such cones, and work out their general form more specifically for all symmetry groups of type A (previously known) and types B and D (new). We obtain several applications of these expressions in type B, including identities involving permutation statistics and lecture hall partitions.

Generating Functions in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ and the Hatcher-Waldhausen map

Abstract:In this paper we construct a generating function quadratic at infinity for any exact Lagrangian in $\mathbb R^{2n}$ equal to $\mathbb R^n$ outside a compact set. This type of Lagrangian is equivalent to a Lagrangian filling in $D^{2n}$ of the standard Legendrian unknot $S^{n-1}$. Generating functions of the type we construct are related to the space $\mathcal M_\infty$ considered by Eliashberg and Gromov. We also show that $\mathcal M_\infty$ is the homotopy fiber of the so-called Hatcher-Waldhausen map. This further relates the understanding of exact Lagrangians (and Legendrians) to algebraic K-theory of spaces. As a result of this and the result by Bökstedt that the Hatcher-Waldhausen map is a rational homotopy equivalence we prove that the stable Lagrangian Gauss map (relative boundary) of the Lagrangian is homotopy trivial.

Abstract:Bliem and Kousidis recently considered a family of random variables whose distributions are given by the generalized Galois numbers (after normalization). We give probabilistic interpretations of these random variables, using inversions in random words, random lattice paths and random Ferrers diagrams, and use these to give new proofs of limit theorems as well as some further limit results.

Abstract:The Wiener index of a finite graph G is the sum over all pairs (p, q) of vertices of G of the distance between p and q. When P is a finite poset, we define its Wiener index as the Wiener index of the graph of its Hasse diagram. In this paper, we find exact expressions for the Wiener indices of the distributive lattices of order ideals in minuscule posets. For infinite families of such posets, we also provide results on the asymptotic distribution of the distance between two random order ideals.

Simple Generating Functions for Certain Young Tableaux with Periodic Walls

Abstract:Recently, Banderier et. al. considered Young tableaux with walls, which are similar to standard Young tableaux, except that local decreases are allowed at some walls. We count the numbers $\overline{f}_m(n)$ of Young tableaux of shape $2\times mn$ with walls, that allow local decreases at the $(jm+i)$-th columns for all $j=0,\dots, n-1$ and $i=2,\dots, m$. We find that they have nice generating functions (thanks to the OEIS) as follows. $$\overline{F}_m(x)=\sum_{n\geq 0}\overline{f}_m(n)x^n=\prod_{k=1}^{m}C(e^{k\frac{2\pi i}{m}} x^\frac{1}{m})=\exp \left(\sum_{n\geq 1}\binom{2mn-1}{mn-1}\frac{x^n}{n}\right),$$ where $C(x)=\frac{1-\sqrt{1-4x}}{2x}$ is the well-known Catalan generating function. We prove generalizations of this result. Firstly, we use the Yamanouchi word to transform Young tableaux with horizontal walls into lattice paths. This results in a determinant formula. Then by lattice path counting theory, we obtain the generating functions $F_r(x)$ for the number of lattice paths from $(0,0)$ to $(\ell n-r,kn)$ that never go above the path $(N^kE^{\ell})^{n-1}N^kE^{\ell-r}$, where $N,E$ stand for north and east steps, respectively. We also obtain exponential formulas for $F_1(x)$ and $F_\ell(x)$. The formula for $\overline{F}_m(x)$ is thus proved since it is just $F_1(x)$ specializes at $k=\ell=m$.

Optimal Re-Embeddings of Border Basis Schemes

Abstract:Border basis schemes are open subschemes of Hilbert schemes parametrizing 0-dimensional subschemes of $\mathbb{P}^n$ of given length. They yield open coverings and are easy to describe and to compute with. Our topic is to find re-embeddings of border basis schemes into affine spaces of minimal dimension. Given $P = K[X] = K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$, an ideal $I\subseteq \langle X \rangle$, and a tuple $Z$ of indeterminates, in previous papers the authors developed techniques for computing $Z$-separating re-embeddings of $I$, i.e., of isomorphisms $\Phi: P/I \rightarrow K[X\setminus Z] / (I\cap K[X\setminus Z])$. Here these general techniques are developed further and improved by constructing a new algorithm for checking candidate tuples $Z$ and by using the Gröbner fan of the linear part of $I$ advantageously. Then we apply this to the ideals defining border basis schemes $\mathbb{B}_{\mathcal{O}}$, where $\mathcal{O}$ is an order ideal of terms, and to their natural generating polynomials. The fact that these ideals are homogeneous w.r.t. the arrow grading allows us to look for suitable tuples $Z$ more systematically. Using the equivalence of indeterminates modulo the square of the maximal ideal, we compute the Gröbner fan of the linear part of the ideal quickly and determine which indeterminates should be in $Z$ when we are looking for optimal re-embeddings. Specific applications include re-embeddings of border basis schemes where $\mathcal{O}\subseteq K[x,y]$ and where $\mathcal{O}$ consists of all terms up to some degree.

Abstract:Given a discrete lattice, $\Gamma < \text{SL}_m(\mathbb{R})$, and a base point $o\in \mathbb{R}^m$, let $N_\Gamma(T)$ denote the number of points in the orbit $o\cdot \Gamma$ whose (Euclidean) length is bounded by a growing parameter, $T$. We demonstrate an abstract spectral method capable of obtaining strong asymptotic estimates for $N_\Gamma(T)$ without relying on the meromorphic continuation of higher rank Langlands Eisenstein series.

Abstract:Border bases, a generalization of Groebner bases, have actively been researched during recent years due to their applicability to industrial problems. A. Kehrein and M. Kreuzer formulated the so called Border Basis Algorithm, an algorithm which allows the computation of border bases that relate to a degree compatible term ordering. In this paper we extend the original Border Basis Algorithm in such a way that also border bases that do not relate to any term ordering can be computed by it.

Abstract:A method to calculate exact Green's functions on lattices in various dimensions is presented. Expressions in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions in one or more variables are obtained for various examples by relating the resolvent to a contour integral, evaluated using residues. Different ways of arranging the series leads to different combinations of hypergeometric functions providing identities involving generalized hypergeometric functions. The method is shown to be useful for computing Green's functions with next-nearest neighbor hopping as well.

Abstract:In classical number theory, one has the famous theorem of Kummer–Sinnott giving the index of the cyclotomic units in the total unit group. Using the division values of sgn-normalized rank one Drinfeld modules, we construct the group of extended cyclotomic units for an abelian extension of a global function field and calculate its index in the whole unit group. The result could be regarded as an analogue and a generalization of Kummer–Sinnott's.
