Abstract:Laportea bulbifera (Sieb. et Zucc.) Wedd. (L. bulbifera) is a significant plant in the Laportea genus. Traditionally, it has been used in ethnomedicine for treating various conditions such as rheumatic arthralgia, fractures, falling injuries, nephritis dropsy, limb numbness, pruritus, fatigue-induced internal imbalances, and irregular menstruation. Modern pharmacological studies have confirmed its therapeutic potential, including anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, analgesic, and anti-rheumatoid arthritis properties. To gather comprehensive information on L. bulbifera, a thorough literature search was conducted using databases like Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest, and CNKI. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of L. bulbifera, covering various aspects such as ethnomedicinal uses, geographical distribution, botanical description, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and quality control. The goal is to establish a solid foundation and propose new research avenues for exploring and developing potential applications of L. bulbifera. So far, a total of one hundred and eighty-nine compounds have been isolated and identified from L. bulbifera, including flavonoids, phenolics, nitrogen compounds, steroids, terpenoids, coumarins, phenylpropanoids, fatty acids and their derivatives, and other compounds. Notably, flavonoids and fatty acids have demonstrated remarkable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, these compounds show promising potential in activities such as analgesia, hypoglycemia, and hypolipidemia, as well as toxicity. Despite extensive fundamental studies on L. bulbifera, further research is still needed to enhance our understanding of its mechanism of action and improve quality control. This requires more comprehensive investigations to explore the specific material basis, uncover new mechanisms of action, and refine quality control methods related to L. bulbifera. By doing so, we could contribute to the further development and utilization of this plant.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Lablab Semen Album (lablab), the white and dried mature fruit of Lablab purpureus in the Lablab genus of the Fabaceae family, is a renowned traditional medicinal herb with a long history of use in China. In Chinese medicine, lablab is often combined with other drugs to treat conditions such as weak spleen and stomach, loss of appetite, loose stools, excessive leucorrhoea, summer dampness and diarrhea, chest tightness, and abdominal distension. Materials and methods: Comprehensive information on lablab was gathered from databases including Web of Science, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Springer, PubMed, CNKI, Wanfang, and ancient materia medica. Results: Lablab, a member of the lentil family, thrives in warm and humid climates, and is distributed across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Traditionally, lablab is used to treat various ailments, such as spleen and stomach weakness, loss of appetite, and diarrhea. Phytochemical analyses reveal that lablab is a rich source of triterpenoid saponins, glucosides, volatile components, polysaccharides, and amino acids. Lablab extracts exhibit diverse biological activities, including hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, antitumoral, antiviral properties, and more. Besides its medicinal applications, lablab is extensively used in the food industry due to its high nutrient content. Additionally, the quality of lablab can be regulated by determining the levels of key chemical components pivotal to its medicinal effects, ensuring the herb's overall quality. Conclusion: Lablab is a promising medicinal and edible plant ingredient with diverse pharmacological effects, making it a valuable ingredient for food, pharmaceuticals, and animal husbandry. However, it has inherent toxicity if not properly prepared. Additionally, some traditional uses and pharmacological activities lack scientific validation due to incomplete methods, unclear results, and insufficient clinical data. Thus, further in vivo and in vitro studies on its pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and toxicology, along with clinical efficacy evaluations, are needed to ensure lablab's safety and effectiveness. As an important traditional Chinese medicine, lablab deserves more attention.

Abstract:The medicinal benefits of P. lanceolata L. have been acknowledged worldwide for hundreds of years. The plant is now distributed worldwide, especially in temperate zones. This review gives an overview of ethnomedicinal use, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities, and other potential application of P. lanceolate L. Several effective chemical constituents such as polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, iridoid glycosides, fatty acids, and polysaccharides are found in P. lanceolata L., which contribute to its exerting specific therapeutic effects. Correspondingly, studies have found that P. lanceolata L. has different biological activities, including antioxidant, antibacterial, wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, and antiulcerogenic activity. The plant also treats various diseases related to the skin, respiratory organs, digestive organs, reproduction, circulation, cancer, pain relief, and infections. The plant has many applications in cosmetics such as lotion and creams; it is also used as an excellent indicator to know the presence and absence of heavy metals and the accumulation in industrial and urban areas. The plant suppresses soil nitrogen mineralization in agriculture due to allelochemicals such as aucubin. The biological activities, medicinal properties, and industrial application of P. lanceolata mainly depend on the activities of the responsible, active chemical constituents. However, this field still needs more study to determine the exact mechanisms and the main bioactive compound activity accountable for these activities. Also, most of the studies have been performed in vitro, so further in vivo studies are recommended for the future.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To report the uncommon case of a woman with abdominal pain and a complex adnexal mass, who was subsequently found to have medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) metastatic to the ovary. METHODS We present the clinical history, physical findings, laboratory and imaging studies, and pathologic findings in a woman with metastatic MTC and locally aggressive disease. The genetic associations, variable clinical course, and histopathologic findings in MTC are reviewed. RESULTS A 38-year-old woman with abdominal and pelvic pain underwent a computed tomographic scan of the abdomen, which showed a complex left adnexal mass. After laparoscopic left oophorectomy, histopathologic analysis of the resected ovary suggested the presence of a metastatic neuroendocrine tumor. The patient recovered but was referred to the surgery clinic 3 months later because of hoarseness, a left neck mass, and left-sided vocal cord paralysis. Further work-up was suggestive of MTC, which prompted RET testing for multiple endocrine neoplasia. The patient underwent left thyroid lobectomy and selective lymph node dissection but later required tracheostomy because of tumoral invasion of the trachea, laser debulking of the tumor, and external beam radiation therapy. One year postoperatively, development of a metastatic lesion in her right ovary necessitated a second oophorectomy. CONCLUSION MTC usually manifests as a solitary thyroid nodule but should be considered in patients with metastatic lesions characterized by neuroendocrine features. This unusual case highlights the biologic and clinical variability of this often aggressive thyroid cancer, which necessitates an attentive work-up, a rigorous operative strategy, and a periodic postoperative surveillance program.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: The plants of the genus Peganum have a long history as a Chinese traditional medicine for the treatment of cough, hypertension, diabetes, asthma, jaundice, colic, lumbago, and many other human ailments. Additionally, the plants can be used as an amulet against evil-eye, dye and so on, which have become increasingly popular in Asia, Iran, Northwest India, and North Africa. Aim of the review: The present paper reviewed the ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, analytical methods, biological activities, metabolism, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, and drug interaction of the genus Peganum in order to assess the ethnopharmacological use and to explore therapeutic potentials and future opportunities for research. Materials and methods: Information on studies of the genus Peganum was gathered via the Internet (using Google Scholar, Baidu Scholar, Elsevier, ACS, Pudmed, Web of Science, CNKI and EMBASE) and libraries. Additionally, information was also obtained from some local books, PhD and MS's dissertations. Results: The genus Peganum has played an important role in traditional Chinese medicine. The main bioactive metabolites of the genus include alkaloids, flavonoids, volatile oils, etc. Scientific studies on extracts and formulations revealed a wide range of pharmacological activities, such as cholinesterase and monoamine oxidase inhibitory activities, antitumor, anti-hypertension, anticoagulant, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, insecticidal, antiparasidal, anti-leishmaniasis, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory. Conclusions: Based on this review, there is some evidence for extracts' pharmacological effects on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, cancer, diabetes, hypertension. Some indications from ethnomedicine have been confirmed by pharmacological effects, such as the cholinesterase, monoamine oxidase and DNA topoisomerase inhibitory activities, hypoglycemic and vasodilation effects of this genus. The available literature showed that most of the activities of the genus Peganum can be attributed to the active alkaloids. Data regarding many aspects of the genus such as mechanisms of actions, metabolism, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, potential drug interactions with standard-of-care medications is still limited which call for additional studies particularly in humans. Further assessments and clinical trials should be performed before it can be integrated into medicinal practices.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Persicaria orientalis (L.) Spach (internationally accepted and only valid name; synonym: Polygonum orientale L.; family: Polygonaceae), which is named Hongcao in China, is a Chinese herbal medicine that has a wide range of pharmacological effects including treatment to rheumatoid arthritis, coronary heart disease, hernia, carbuncle sore, enhance immunity, antimicrobial, osteogenic and dilated bronchiectasis. Aim of this review: This review aims to provide systematically organized information on traditional uses of Persicaria orientalis (L.) Spach (P. orientalis) and to critically analyze evidences in phytotherapeutic, botanical, and pharmacological literatures that support its therapeutic potential in treatment to human diseases. Isolation of additional compounds and detailed pharmacological investigations are key areas to investigate. Materials and methods: Relevant information on P. orientalis was collected through published scientific materials (including PubMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley, ACS, CNKI, Scifinder, Springer, Taylor & Francis, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Baidu Scholar) and other literature sources (e.g., Chinese Pharmacopoeia, 2015 edition, Chinese herbal classic books and PhD and MSc thesis, etc.). Results: Traditional uses were compiled in this review, including classic prescriptions and historical applications. Approximately 70 compounds, mainly including flavonoids, phenolics, lignans, limonoids and steroids, have been isolated and identified from P. orientalis. Among them, flavonoids were main components. Crude extracts and pure compounds isolated from P. orientalis exhibited various pharmacological activities, such as protection against ischemia and hypoxia-induced myocardial cells and hypoxia/reoxygenation cardiomyocyte, increase the blood flow in myocardium, expanding bronchus, anti-inflammatory and analgesic, and antithrombotic effects and so on. Conclusions: P. orientalis is a valuable source with therapeutic potential on a wide range of diseases especially cardiovascular-system disorders. Though most traditional uses of P. orientalis are supported by in vitro/vivo pharmacological studies, however, there is still a lack of researches on active pharmacodynamic ingredients as well as in-depth and in-vivo mechanistic studies. Therefore, isolation and identification of more active compounds (especially flavonoids), their structure-activity relationship and studies on pharmacodynamic mechanisms by more elaborative in-vivo studies on P. orientalis may be focused on in order to confirm efficacy of reported therapeutic effects of P. orientalis and help explore it's therapeutic potentials. Furthermore, research designs of pharmacological studies based on traditional uses of anti-rheumatoid arthritis through cell lines and animal models should also be considered as key research topics.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: The genus L. has high medicinal value and has traditional been used to treat a variety of gastrointestinal disorders, as well as diabetes, edema, colds, arthritis, asthma, and traumatic injuries. Aim of the review: This work addresses the missing information by conducting a comprehensive analysis of the traditional uses, chemical components, and pharmacological applications of the more reported species of the genus L. The origin of the genus, its toxicology, and the use of classical therapies in modern medicine were also discussed. It provides references for historical evidence, resource development, and medical research on the genus. Method: ology: Data about the genus L. were gathered via Web of Science, PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Connected Papers, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), electronic ancient books and local chronicles. The WFO Plant List (wfoplantlist.org) and Flora of China (www.iplant.cn) confirmed L.'s Latin name, and the species information. The program ChemBioDraw Ultra 14.0 was used to create the molecular structures of the compounds that were displayed in the text. Result: Currently, at least 740 constituents have been isolated and identified from L. These include 9 groups of chemicals, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and terpenoids. They have been shown to have over 20 biological properties in vivo and in vitro, such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant effects. Conclusion: Based on pharmacological investigations, chemical components, and traditional folk applications, L. is considered a medicinal plant having a variety of pharmacological actions. However, although the pharmacological activity of the L. genus has been preliminary demonstrated, most have only been assessed using simple in vitro cell lines or animal disease models. In order to fully elucidate the pharmacological activity and mechanisms of L., future studies should be conducted in a more comprehensive clinical manner.

Abstract:REFERRING a visually impaired child for psychological assessment can often be a frustrating experience. Usually the referral is motivated by a desire to help children develop to their optimal potential, so it is important to know the child’s level of intelligence, as well as details about the visual impairment and any unusual patterns of behaviour. For the psychologist, who may not be very familiar with the visually impaired population, there is a great variety of tests to choose from, standardised either on populations of typical children or on a visually impaired population, who may or may not be living in institutions. In the desire to be ‘fair’ to the child, the examiner will often choose test material for intellectual assessment that does not involve vision, and extrapolate the findings to other (not tested) areas of function. Alternatively, a detailed list of strengths and weaknesses may be gathered from a series of tasks with dubious practical application. The resulting report in such a case is often nothing more than a rewritten referral letter, since it was the awareness of the disparity between the strengths and the weaknesses that prompted the referral in the first place. Defining intelligence The question of defining inteiligence has been a source of considerable controversy. Some have assumed that there is one general component’, others have seen intelligence as a combination of independent mental abilities2. WECHSLER3 describes it as ‘the overall capacity of an individual to understand and cope with the world around him’ and sees it as a combination of the earlier-mentioned points of view. The most commonly used intelligence scales try to tap a wide range of experiences typical for children within a specific culture4.
Plumula Nelumbinis: A review of traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and safety

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Plumula Nelumbinis, the green embryo of the mature seeds of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn, has a medical history of over 400 years. It is widely used for clearing the heart and heat, calming the mind, and promoting astringent essence and hemostasis in traditional Chinese medicine. Moreover, it usually dual use as food and medicine. This review aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of Plumula Nelumbinis by summarizing its botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and safety. Methods: This review summarized published studies on Plumula Nelumbinis in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and literature databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Baidu Scholar, Wiley and China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database (CNKI), and limits the different research articles in botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and safety about Plumula Nelumbinis. Results: Plumula Nelumbinis is used to treat hypertension, arrhythmia, severe aplastic anemia, insomnia, encephalopathy and gynecological disease in traditional Chinese medicine and clinical studies. More than 130 chemicals have been isolated and identified from Plumula Nelumbinis, including alkaloids, flavonoids, polysaccharides and volatile oil. In addition, pharmacological effects, such as protective effects against cardiovascular diseases, neurological diseases, lung and kidney injury, anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities, were also evaluated by in vitro and in vivo studies. Moreover, the potential signaling pathways regulated by Plumula Nelumbinis in cardiovascular and neurological diseases and perspectives on Plumula Nelumbinis research were discussed. Conclusion: Plumula Nelumbinis, a commonly used Chinese medicine, has a variety of traditional and modern therapeutic uses. Some traditional uses, especially the treatment of cardiovascular and neurological diseases, have been verified by pharmacological investigation. However, the pharmacological molecular mechanisms, pharmacokinetics and toxicology of Plumula Nelumbinis are still incomplete. In the future, a series of systematic studies on active compounds identification, pharmacological mechanism clarification, quality and safety evaluation are necessary.

Abstract:Phyllanthus emblica Linn is not only an edible fruit with high nutritional value, but also a medicinal plant with multiple bioactivities. It is widely used in clinical practice with functions of clearing heat, cooling blood, digesting food, strengthening stomach, promoting fluid production, and relieving cough. This review summarized a wide variety of phytonutrients, including nutritional components (mineral elements, amino acids, vitamins, polysaccharides, unsaturated free fatty acids) and functional components (phenolic acids (1-34), tannins (35-98), flavonoids (99-141), sterols (142-159), triterpenoids (160-175), lignans (176-183), alkaloids (184-197), alkanes (198-212), aromatic micromolecules (213-222), other compounds (223-239)). The isolated compounds and the various extracts of P. emblica Linn presented a diverse spectrum of biological activities such as anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic, anti-atherosclerosis, neuroprotective, enhancing immunity, anti-fatigue, anti-myocardial fibrosis. The quality markers of P. emblica Linn were predicted and analyzed based on traditional medicinal properties, traditional efficacy, plant genealogy and chemical component characteristics, biogenic pathway of chemical components, measurability of chemical components, transformation characteristics of polyphenolic components, homologous characteristics of medicine and food, compound compatibility environment, and clinical applications. This review also summarized and prospected applications of P. emblica Linn in beverages, preserved fruits, fermented foods, etc. However, the contents of mechanism, structure-activity relationship, quality control, toxicity, extraction, processing of P. emblica Linn are not clear, and are worth further studies in the future.

(Piperaceae) is a traditional medicinal plant widely distributed in India, Malaysia, Thailand, and the southeastern coastal areas of China including Fujian, Guangdong, and Guizhou. It has been used for centuries for the treatment of wind-cold cough, fever, rheumatism arthralgia, diarrhea dysentery, postpartum foot swelling, stomachache, toothache, diabetes, and traumatic injury.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Aims of the review</h3><p>To critically anayze the literature for the botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicity, and clinical trials of <em>P. sarmentosum</em> in order to provide a scientific consensus for further research and discovery of potential candidate drugs.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Materials and methods</h3><p>The contents of this review were sourced from electronic databases including PubMed, SciFinder, Web of Science, Science Direct, Elsevier, Google Scholar, Chinese Knowledge On frastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, Chinese Scientific and Technological Periodical Database (VIP), Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM), Cochrane Controlled register of Clinical Trials, Clinical Trials. gov, and Chinese Clinical Trial Registry. Chinese medicine books published over the years were used to elucidate the traditional uses of <em>P. sarmentosum</em> and additional information was also collected from Yao Zhi website (<a href="https://db.yaozh.com/">https://db.yaozh.com/</a>).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>Phytochemical analyses of the chemical constituents of <em>P. sarmentosum</em> include essential oil, alkaloids, flavonoids, lignans, and steroids. The literature supports the ethnomedicinal uses of <em>P. sarmentosum</em> for the treatment of cold, gastritis, and rheumatoid joint pain, and further confirms its relatively new pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic, and antipyretic activities. Other biological roles such as anti-osteoporosis, antibacterial, antidepressant, anti-atherosclerotic, and hypoglycemic activities have also been reported. However, the methodologies employed in individual studies are limited.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>There is convincing evidence from both <em>in vitro</em> and <em>in vivo</em> studies supporting the traditional use of <em>P. sarmentosum</em> and it is imperative that natural bioactive compounds are examined further. More efforts should be focused on the pharmacodynamic constituents of <em>P. sarmentosum</em> to provide practical basis for quality control, and additional studies are needed to understand the mechanism of their action. Further studies on the comprehensive evaluation of medicinal quality and understandings of serum chemistry, multi-target network pharmacology, and molecular docking technology of <em>P. sarmentosum</em> are of great importance and should be considered.</p>

Abstract:Background Persicaria senegalensis (Meisn.) Sojak is an understudied member of the Polygonaceae Juss. family. Aim This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the documented knowledge of Persicaria senegalensis , summarising traditional, biological, and phytochemistry to highlight research gaps and emphasise the medicinal potential of this abundant herb to encourage future research that will ultimately facilitate its potential incorporation into evidence-based healthcare practices and sustainable agriculture. Method PubMed, PubChem, Google Scholar, Scopus, Springer, Science Direct, and books were searched using the following terms: Persicaria senegalensis, Polygonum glutinosum, Polygonum lanigerum, Polygonum sambesiacum, Polygonum senegalense, Polygonum senegalensis, and Amblygonum senegalense. Only articles written in English were included. Articles addressing antioxidant activity were excluded. Results In addition to its ecological value as a heavy metal extractant and nutrient accumulator, it has a rich history of traditional uses, throughout Africa for the treatment of hemorrhoids, abdominal pain, diarrhea, malaria, skin troubles, syphilis, ectoparasites, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and gynecological infections. Biological activities investigated include anti-feedant effects, sub-clinical mastitis, larvicidal, molluscicidal, anticancer, antibacterial, and anti-diabetes effects. Several compounds have been isolated from this species and investigated for their antiplasmodial, larvicidal and anti-schistosomiasis activity. Conclusion Many traditional uses of P. senegalensis remain uninvestigated and should be considered for future studies. Furthermore, studies confirming safety, efficacy, and the identification of active principles are lacking and would contribute to the value and applicability of current research findings.

Abstract:Lepidium L an important weedy plant of Brassicaceae family, comprises approximately 265species which are endemic to all continents. Since ancient time, the therapeutic potential of Lepidium species were fully recognized and traditionally used in different parts of the world such as Asian, African and American countries. This review aimed to provide comprehensive information about the botanical characteristics, traditional uses, pharmacology, phytochemistry and toxicology of Lepidium , to discover therapeutic potentials of different Lepidium species for further research. The information available on Lepidium species were collected from scientific databases such as Science Direct, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed and some traditional texts. There are several promising bioactivities for this genus that some of them have long been recognized in traditional medicine such as coagulant, biofumigant, hepato-renal protective activities and fertility enhancement. To date, several types of phytochemicals isolated and identified from Lepidium species including glucosinolate, alkaloid, alkamide, macamide, mucilage, phytosterol, flavonoid and essential oil. A significant number of glucosinolates and their hydrolysis products (isothiocyanates), have been isolated from Lepidium species with potential pharmacological activities including anti-carcinogenic and chemoprotective activities with different mechanism of actions. Some studies on the safety assessment of L. sativum L., a common used Lepidium species, indicated some degree of toxicities in animal fetus which supposed to be related to its hydrolysis product constituents, named benzyl isothiocyanates (BITC). Moreover, exposure to goitrin, a glucosinolate degradation product from certain Lepidium species, may exert some adverse effects on thyroid glands, through the competitive inhibition of iodine uptake. It should be notice that despite the beneficial effects of Brassicaceae plants for reducing risk of different types of disease especially cancer, limit of the consumption of some Lepidium species as a routine meal should be considered.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevanceAbrus precatorius L. (AP) is a folk medicine with a long-term medicinal history worldwide, which is extensively applied to various ailments, such as bronchitis, jaundice, hepatitis, contraception, tumor, abortion, malaria, etc. Meanwhile, its leaves are also served as tea in China, and its roots are employed as a substitute for Glycyrrhiza uralensis or as a raw material for the extraction of glycyrrhizin in India. Thus, AP is considered to be a plant with dual values of medicine and economy as well as its chemical composition and biological activity, which are of growing interest to the scientific community.Aim of reviewIn the review, the traditional application, botany, chemical constituents, pharmacological activities, and toxicity are comprehensively and systematically summarized.Materials and methodsAn extensive database retrieval was conducted to gather the specific information about AP from 1871 to 2022 using online bibliographic databases Web of Science, PubMed, SciFinder, Google Scholar, CNKI, and Baidu Scholar. The search terms comprise the keywords “Abrus precatorius”, “phytochemistry”, “pharmacological activity”, “toxicity” and “traditional application” as a combination.ResultsTo date, AP is traditionally used to treat various diseases, including sore throat, cough, bronchitis, jaundice, hepatitis, abdominal pain, contraception, tumor, abortion, malaria, and so on. More than 166 chemical compounds have been identified from AP, which primarily cover flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, steroids, alkaloids, organic acids, esters, proteins, polysaccharides, and so on. A wide range of in vitro and in vivo pharmacological functions of AP have been reported, such as antitumor, antimicrobial, insecticidal, antiprotozoal, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, antifertility, antidiabetic, other pharmacological activities. The crushed seeds in powder or paste form were comparatively toxic to humans and animals by oral administration. Interestingly, the methanolic extracts were non-toxic to adult Wistar albino rats at various doses (200 and 400 mg/kg) daily.ConclusionsThe review focuses on the traditional application, botany, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities, and toxicity of AP, which offers a valuable context for researchers on the current research status and a reference for further research and applications of this medicinal plant.

Abstract:Piper sarmentosum (Piperaceae) is a well-recognized traditional medicinal plant and has attracted considerable attention due to its extensive range of pharmacological properties. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the traditional uses, phytochemical constituents, and biological and pharmacological activities associated with P. sarmentosum, focusing on the scientific literature appearing in the period 2012–2023. Published articles were selected from databases including Science Direct, Google Scholar, and those with a digital object identifier (DOI). The traditional uses of P. sarmentosum encompass a wide spectrum of biological activities, including anticancer, anti-osteoporotic, antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-hypertensive, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic characteristics. The leaf part has been utilized in various forms, including crude extracts or standardized extracts, either alone or in combination with other pharmacological agents, for the treatment of diverse ailments in humans. This review highlights the phytochemical constituents of P. sarmentosum and their contributions to its pharmacological activities. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of identifying, determining, and standardizing the active constituents to examine the full biological potential of the plant in a reproducible manner. P. sarmentosum emerges as a rich plant source that holds promise for the development of potential standardized medication candidates. However, further research is needed to assess its safety and therapeutic efficacy beyond the existing data based on a standardized preparation. Preserving this valuable medicinal plant asset is crucial for the health benefits of future generations. This review serves as a comprehensive reference for researchers, medicinal plant practitioners, and healthcare professionals, and encourages further investigation into the multifaceted properties of P. sarmentosum paving the way for its optimal and sustainable utilization in contemporary healthcare.

Abstract:Cynoglossum amabile, a member of the Boraginaceae family, is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine and ethnomedicine known as Daotihu. Despite several studies confirming the presence of bioactive pyrrolizidine alkaloids such as amabiline, ambelline, echinatine, europine, and others in C. amabile, there has been no comprehensive review of its traditional uses, phytochemistry, and pharmacology thus far. This review was conducted by thoroughly examining the literature and analyzing network databases. It covers various aspects of C. amabile, including botanical characteristics, geographical distribution, traditional applications, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities, toxicology, and clinical applications. The results have shown that C. amabile has been traditionally used for medicinal, edible, and ornamental purposes in China for many centuries. The whole plant, root, and leaf of C. amabile are used by different ethnic groups, such as Lisu, Bai, Naxi, Yi, Jinuo, and Han, to treat malaria, hepatitis, dysentery, leucorrhea, tuberculosis cough, fracture, joint dislocation, trauma bleeding, and skin carbuncle abscess. A total of 47 chemical components, including alkaloids (pyrrolizidine alkaloids, PAs), sterols, organic acids, and saccharides, were isolated from C. amabile. Pharmacological studies show that the chemical extracts of C. amabile possess various biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-microbial, cardiovascular effects, ganglionic action, and acetylcholinesterase inhibition. However, it is important to note that C. amabile exhibits hepatotoxicity, with its toxicity being linked to its primary PAs components. Although preliminary studies suggest potential applications in the treatment of prostate diseases and alopecia, further research is needed to validate these clinical uses. Our review highlights the traditional uses, phytochemistry, biological activity, toxicity, and clinical applications of C. amabile. It emphasizes the essential guiding role of the indigenous medicinal knowledge system in developing new drugs. Previous studies have shown that the phytochemical and pharmacological characteristics of C. amabile are significantly related to its traditional medicinal practices. Cynoglossum amabile has excellent market potential and can be further analyzed in terms of phytochemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology, which are critical for its clinical drug safety, quality evaluation, and resource development.
[Mineralogy and genesis of mixed-layer clay minerals in the Jiujiang net-like red soil].

Abstract:Mineralogy and genesis were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier infrared absorption spectroscopy (FTIR) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) to understand the mineralogy and its genesis significance of mixed-layer clay minerals in Jiujiang red soil section. XRD and FTIR results show that the net-like red soil sediments are composed of illite, kaolinite, minor smectite and mixed-layer illite-smectite and minor mixed-layer kaolinite-smectite. HRTEM observation indicates that some smectite layers have transformed into kaolinite layers in net-like red soil. Mixed-layer illite-smectite is a transition phase of illite transforming into smectite, and mixed-layer kaolinite-smectite is a transitional product relative to kaolinite and smectite. The occurrence of two mixed-layer clay species suggests that the weathering sequence of clay minerals in net-like red soil traversed from illite to mixed-layer illite-smectite to smectite to mixed-layer kaolinite-smectite to kaolinite, which indicates that net-like red soil formed under a warm and humid climate with strengthening of weathering.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Apocynum venetum L., commonly known as Luobuma, has been widely utilized in East Asia and Southeast Asia for its medicinal properties and health benefits. Its first documented mention is found in the classic Chinese text Divine Farmer's Materia Medica from the Eastern Han Dynasty, in which it is referred to as "Zeqi." In 1977, the leaves of A. venetum were officially included in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. The 2020 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia attributes various effects to A. venetum, including liver pacification, spirit tranquilization, heat clearance, and water disinhibition. Aims of the review: Despite the abundance of recent studies on A. venetum leaves, a comprehensive review of the literature that incorporates the latest research findings is lacking. The primary goal of this article is to provide researchers with a more comprehensive and detailed reference by conducting an in-depth analysis of the traditional medicinal uses, phytochemicals, and pharmacological mechanisms associated with A. venetum leaves. Materials and methods: This research project includes original articles published from 1957 to 2024 from various databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Furthermore, data from ancient Chinese herbal texts, doctoral dissertations, and master's theses were examined, encompassing a total of 89 records. Results: A. venetum, which is widely utilized in traditional ethnic medicine, possesses a diverse botanical chemical composition with 371 chemical constituents, including flavonoids, terpenoids, steroids, phenylpropanoids, organic acids, polysaccharides, and volatile oils. Although the water-soluble components of A. venetum remain incompletely understood, empirical evidence and scholarly literature have demonstrated the beneficial pharmacological effects of its extracts and chemical constituents, particularly the flavonoids, which offer various effects, including cardiovascular protection, anticancer properties, antioxidant activity, and anti-inflammatory effects. Conclusions: This review presents a comprehensive review of the traditional and contemporary medicinal applications of A. venetum. These findings indicate that A. venetum is effective in treating hypertension and also shows promise in addressing hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, and myocardial damage. This discovery may offer novel perspectives on the prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases associated with hypertension. Additionally, the article outlines a total of 114 nonvolatile phytochemicals and 257 volatile components identified in A. venetum extract, which is a significant increase compared with the previous literature. Drawing upon published data, this paper also employs bioinformatic analysis to anticipate the potential activity of additional components. In conclusion, this article offers the most comprehensive summary to date of the traditional medicinal uses and components of A. venetum, serving as a scientific foundation for the potential expansion of its clinical application.
