Abstract:The molecular characterisation of human tumour antigens recognised by T cells has provided new impetus for immunisation of patients bearing tumours expressing well-defined antigens. After evaluating the immunogenicity of the new, molecularly characterised antigens in vitro, several clinical studies were conducted to assess the in vivo immunogenicity and the clinical efficacy of vaccines including these antigens. The findings generated by trials based on the administration of peptides or DNA-encoding antigens are discussed to highlight the limits of this therapeutic approach; however, this approach has resulted in some complete and durable regressions, although still in a unsatisfactory small number of cases (5-25%). The recent use of dendritic cells loaded ex vivo with tumour antigens suggests that a high frequency of tumour-specific immune responses can be achieved. Possible means of overcoming the clinical limits and improving the outcome of previous studies are also discussed.
Effects of the speed on the webbed foot kinematics of mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)

Abstract:In this study, the effect of the speed on the webbed foot locomotion of the mallard was analyzed based on a considerable number of reliable indoor test data. Four adult male mallards were selected for analysis, and the locomotion speed of the mallard was controlled using the treadmill at an accurate and adjustable speed. The locomotion pattern of the webbed foot of the mallard at different speeds was recorded using a high-speed camera. The changes in the position and conformation of the webbed foot during locomotion on a treadmill were tracked and analyzed using Simi-Motion kinematics software. The results indicated that the stride length of the mallard increased, and the stance phase duration was shortened with the increase of the speed, whereas the swing phase duration did not vary significantly. The duty factor decreased with the increase of the mallard speed but not drop below to 0.5, because the mallards flew with their wings, or moved backward relative to the treadmill with the further increase of the speed. Using the energy method to further distinguish gait, and through the percentage of congruity analysis, it was found that between 0.73 and 0.93 m/s, the gait experienced a transition from walking to grounded running, with no significant changes in spatiotemporal parameters. At speeds between 0.93 and 1.6 m/s, mallards adopt a grounded running gait. The instantaneous changes of the tarsometatarso-phalangeal joint (TMTPJ) angle and the intertarsal joint (ITJ) angle at touch-down, mid-stance and lift-off concomitant with the change of the speed were examined with the TMTPJ and ITJ angle as the research objects. Moreover, the continuous changes of the joint angles were examined in a complete stride cycle. The result indicated that the increase of the speed will also make the TMTPJ and ITJ angle change ahead of time in a stride cycle, proving the shortened stance phase duration. The ITJ angle changed much more than the TMTPJ. Thus, the above result reveals that the mallard primarily responds with the increase of the speed by adjusting the ITJ, instead of the TMTPJ. The vertical displacement of the toe joint points and the toe joint angle was studied (α joint angle is between the second toe and the third toe; β joint angle is between the third toe and the fourth toe) with a complete stride cycle as the research object. The distal phalanxes of the second, third and fourth toes first contacted the ground, and the proximal phalanx touched the ground in turn during the early stance phase duration of the mallard, as indicated by the result of this study. However, the toes got off the ground in turn from the proximal phalanxes when the mallard foot got off the ground. With the decrease of the interphalangeal α and β joint angles, the foot web tended to be close and rapidly recovered before the next touch-down. The above result reveals that the webbed foot of the mallard is a coupling system that plays a role in the adjustment of speed.

Abstract:The mallard webbed foot represents an exemplary model of biomechanical efficiency in avian locomotion. This study delves into the intricate material assembly and tendon morphology of the mallard webbed foot, employing both macroscopic and microscopic analyses. Through histological slices and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), we scrutinized the coupling assembly of rigid and flexible materials such as skin, tendon, and bone, while elucidating the biomechanical functions of tendons across various segments of the tarsometatarsophalangeal joint (TMTPJ). The histological examination unveiled a complex structural hierarchy extending from the external integument to the skeletal framework. Notably, the bone architecture, characterized by compact bone and honeycombed trabeculae, showcases a harmonious blend of strength and lightweight design. Tendons, traversing the phalangeal periphery, surrounded by elastic fibers, collagen fibers, and fat tissue. Fat chambers beneath the phalanx, filled with adipocytes, provide effective buffering, enabling the phalanx to withstand gravity, provide support, and facilitate locomotion. Furthermore, SEM analysis provided insights into the intricate morphology and arrangement of collagen fiber bundles within tendons. Flexor tendons in proximal and middle TMTPJ segments adopt a wavy-type, facilitating energy storage and release during weight-bearing activities. In contrast, distal TMTPJ flexor tendons assume a linear-type, emphasizing force transmission across phalangeal interfaces. Similarly, extensor tendons demonstrate segment-specific arrangements tailored to their respective biomechanical roles, with wavy-type in proximal and distal segments for energy modulation and linear-type in middle segments for enhanced force transmission and tear resistance. Overall, our findings offer a comprehensive understanding of the mallard webbed foot's biomechanical prowess, underscoring the symbiotic relationship between material composition, tendon morphology, and locomotor functionality. This study not only enriches our knowledge of avian biomechanics but also provides valuable insights for biomimetic design and tissue engineering endeavors.
Comparative Analysis of Morphometric, Densitometric, and Mechanical Properties of Skeletal Locomotor Elements in Three Duck Species (Anatidae: Anatinae)

Abstract:Ducks (Anatinae) play a crucial role in wetland ecosystems, contributing to seed dispersal and nutrient cycling. This study investigates the skeletal adaptations of three duck species: the Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula), and Green-Winged Teal (Anas crecca). The focus is on the tibiotarsus and humerus bones to understand how these adaptations support their different locomotion and habitat preferences. Bone samples n = 6 of deceased ducks (both male and female) from each species (for a total of 36 samples) were cleaned and measured for length, weight, and density. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to determine bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC), and mechanical properties like yield force and stiffness were tested using a 3-point bending test. The results show significant differences in body weight, bone weight, and bone length among the species, with Mallards being the largest and Teals the smallest. Male Teals displayed higher relative bone weight (RBW) in their tibia compared to male Mallards, and male Mallards had significantly lower RBW in the humerus compared to the other species. Female Teals had higher RBW than the other species. Teals also exhibited much lower BMD in the tibia, whereas female Mallards had lower BMD in the humerus. The Seedor index revealed that male Mallards had the highest values in the tibia, while female Teals had the lowest. Mechanical testing indicated that Teals had lower yield force and breaking force in the tibia, whereas Mallards showed the highest stiffness in both bones. Tufted Ducks had intermediate values, consistent with their diving behaviour. These findings suggest that the Mallard's robust bones support its adaptability to various environments and diverse locomotion and foraging strategies. The Teal's lighter and less dense bones facilitate rapid flight and agility in shallow wetlands. The Tufted Duck's intermediate bone characteristics reflect its specialization in diving, requiring a balance of strength and flexibility. Understanding these skeletal differences may provide valuable insights into the evolutionary biology and biomechanics of these species, aiding in their conservation and enhancing our knowledge of their roles in wetland ecosystems. By exploring the functional morphology of these ducks, this study aims to shed light on the biomechanical mechanisms that underpin their locomotion and foraging behaviours.
Mudskippers modulate their locomotor kinematics when moving on deformable and inclined substrates

Abstract:Many ecological factors influence animal movement, including properties of the media that they move on or through. Animals moving in terrestrial environments encounter conditions that can be challenging for generating propulsion and maintaining stability, such as inclines and deformable substrates that can cause slipping and sinking. In response, tetrapods tend to adopt a more crouched posture and lower their center of mass on inclines and increase the surface area of contact on deformable substrates, such as sand. Many amphibious fishes encounter the same challenges when moving on land, but how these finned animals modulate their locomotion with respect to different environmental conditions and how these modifications compare with those seen within tetrapods is relatively understudied. Mudskippers (Gobiidae: Oxudercinae) are a particularly noteworthy group of amphibious fishes in this context given that they navigate a wide range of environmental conditions, from flat mud to inclined mangrove trees. They use a unique form of terrestrial locomotion called 'crutching', where their pectoral fins synchronously lift and vault the front half of the body forward before landing on their pelvic fins while the lower half of the body and tail are kept straight. However, recent work has shown that mudskippers modify some aspects of their locomotion when crutching on deformable surfaces, particularly those at an incline. For example, on inclined dry sand, mudskippers bent their bodies laterally and curled and extended their tails to potentially act as a secondary propulsor and/or anti-slip device. In order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the functional diversity and context-dependency of mudskipper crutching, we compared their kinematics on different combinations of substrate types (solid, mud, dry sand) and inclines (0°, 10°, 20°). In addition to increasing lateral bending on deformable and inclined substrates, we found that mudskippers increased the relative contact time and contact area of their paired fins while becoming more crouched, responses comparable to those seen in tetrapods and other amphibious fishes. Mudskippers on these substrates also exhibited previously undocumented behaviors, such as extending and adpressing the distal portions of their pectoral fins more anteriorly, dorsoventrally bending their trunk, "belly-flopping" on sand, and "gripping" the mud substrate with their pectoral fin rays. Our study highlights potential compensatory mechanisms shared among vertebrates in terrestrial environments while also illustrating that locomotor flexibility and even novelty can emerge when animals are challenged with environmental variation.

Abstract:Insects exhibit remarkable adaptability in their locomotive strategies across diverse environments, a crucial trait for foraging, survival, and predator avoidance. , tiny 2-3 mm insects that adeptly walk on water surfaces, exemplify this adaptability by using the alternating tripod gait in both aquatic and terrestrial terrains. These insects commonly inhabit low-flow ponds and streams cluttered with natural debris like leaves, twigs, and duckweed. Using high-speed imaging and pose-estimation software, we analyze . movement across water, sandpaper (simulating land), and varying duckweed densities (10%, 25%, and 50% coverage). Our results reveal maintain consistent joint angles and strides of their upper and hind legs across all duckweed coverages, mirroring those seen on sandpaper. adjust the stride length of their middle legs based on the amount of duckweed present, decreasing with increased duckweed coverage and at 50% duckweed coverage, their middle legs’ strides closely mimic their strides on sandpaper. Notably, achieve speeds up to 56 body lengths per second on water, nearly double those observed on sandpaper and duckweed (both rough, frictional surfaces), highlighting their higher speeds on low friction surfaces such as the water’s surface. This study highlights ’s ecological adaptability, setting the stage for advancements in amphibious robotics that emulate their unique tripod gait for navigating complex terrains.

Abstract:Walking and swimming impose drastically different demands on locomotor function, yet many species can move through both environments. To test how this is accomplished, we used XROMM to evaluate girdle and limb rotations during swimming and walking in an aquatic freshwater turtle (Pseudemys concinna) compared with the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). We found that loggerheads had reduced girdle rotations in both environments, whereas the two species modulated humeral movements differently when walking versus swimming. Locomotion in water and on land impose dramatically different demands, yet many animals successfully move in both environments. Most turtle species perform both aquatic and terrestrial locomotion but vary in how they use their limbs. Freshwater turtles use anteroposterior movements of the limbs during walking and swimming with contralateral fore‐ and hindlimbs moving in synchrony. In contrast, sea turtles swim primarily with "powerstroke" movements, characterized by synchronous forelimb motions while the hindlimbs act as rudders. High‐speed video has been used to study powerstroking, but pectoral girdle movements and long‐axis rotation (LAR) of the humerus are likely both key components to turtle locomotor function and cannot be quantified from external video. Here, we used XROMM to measure pectoral girdle and humeral movements in a sea turtle (loggerhead, Caretta caretta) compared to the freshwater river cooter (Pseudemys concinna) during terrestrial and aquatic locomotion. The largest difference among species was in yaw of the pectoral girdle during swimming, with loggerheads showing almost no yaw during powerstroking whereas pectoral girdle yaw in the cooter during rowing was over 30°. The magnitude of humeral LAR was greatest during loggerhead powerstroking and the temporal pattern of supination and pronation was opposite from that of cooters. We hypothesize that these kinematic differences are driven by differences in how the limbs are used to power propulsion. Rotations at the glenoid drive the overall patterns of movement in freshwater turtles, whereas glenohumeral LAR in loggerheads is used to direct the position and orientation of the elbow, which is the joint that determines the orientation of the thrust‐generating structure (the flipper) in loggerheads.

Abstract:Most birds use at least two modes of locomotion: flying and walking (terrestrial locomotion). Whereas the wings and tail are used for flying, the legs are mainly used for walking. The role of other body segments remains, however, poorly understood. In this study, we examine the kinematics of the head, the trunk, and the legs during terrestrial locomotion in the quail (Coturnix coturnix). Despite the trunk representing about 70% of the total body mass, its function in locomotion has received little scientific interest to date. This prompted us to focus on its role in terrestrial locomotion. We used high-speed video fluoroscopic recordings of quails walking at voluntary speeds on a trackway. Dorso-ventral and lateral views of the motion of the skeletal elements were recorded successively and reconstructed in three dimensions using a novel method based on the temporal synchronisation of both views. An analysis of the trajectories of the body parts and their coordination showed that the trunk plays an important role during walking. Moreover, two sub-systems participate in the gait kinematics: (i) the integrated 3D motion of the trunk and thighs allows for the adjustment of the path of the centre of mass; (ii) the motion of distal limbs transforms the alternating forward motion of the feet into a continuous forward motion at the knee and thus assures propulsion. Finally, head bobbing appears qualitatively synchronised to the movements of the trunk. An important role for the thigh muscles in generating the 3D motion of the trunk is suggested by an analysis of the pelvic anatomy.

Abstract:Animals not only need to walk and run but also lie prone to rest and then stand up. Sit-to-stand (STS) and sit-to-walk (STW) transitions are vital behaviours little studied in species other than humans so far, but likely impose biomechanical constraints on limb design because they involve near-maximal excursions of limb joints that should require large length changes and force production from muscles. By integrating data from experiments into musculoskeletal simulations, we analysed joint motions, ground reaction forces, and muscle dynamics during the STS and STW transitions in a large terrestrial, bipedal, and cursorial bird: the emu ( , ∼ 30 kg). Simulation results suggest that in both STS and STW, emus operate near the functional limits (∼ 50 % of shortening/lengthening) of some of their hindlimb muscles, particularly in distal muscles with limited capacity for length change and leverage. Both movements involved high muscle activations (> 50 %) and force generation of major joint extensor muscles early in the transition. STW also required larger net joint moments and non-sagittal motions, entailing greater demands for muscle capacity. Whilst our study involves multiple assumptions, our findings lay the groundwork for future studies to understand, for example, how tendon contributions may reduce excessive muscle demands, especially in the distal hindlimb. As the first investigation into how an avian species stands up, this study provides a foundational framework for future comparative studies investigating organismal morphofunctional specialisations and evolution, offering potential robotics and animal welfare applications.

Trajectory Planning for Bipedal Locomotion of a Duck-Inspired Robot

Abstract:Nowadays, amphibious robots demonstrate significant potential in fields such as disaster relief and environmental monitoring. In response to these applications, this study plans the leg trajectory of a duck-inspired robot based on the motion trajectory and characteristics of real ducks, aiming to enhance the robot’s adaptability and operational efficiency in complex aquatic and terrestrial environments. To design the duck-like gait, this paper analyzes motion videos of real ducks frame by frame. Using the DeepLabCut algorithm and geometric analysis, we identify key leg points. The joint angle change curve of the real duck and the spatial motion trajectory of the metatarsophalangeal joint are obtained by cubic spline interpolation. Finally, we use inverse kinematics to determine the robot’s joint rotation angles, providing a reference for designing the duck-inspired robot’s motion gait.

Abstract:The preparation of a highly purified antifertility factor from human seminal plasma is described, and some of its biochemical properties have been determined. Purification was achieved by ultracentrifugation of particle-free human seminal plasma, followed by chromatography of the precipitate using carboxymethyl cellulose, concanavalin A, and Sepharose 6B columns. An occasional contaminant was further removed by preparative isoelectric focusing. During the purification procedures, the activity of the fractions was monitored by mixing them with capacitated mouse spermatozoa for 20 min before adding an aliquot to intact mouse oocytes, and determining fertilization after 24 h. The I50 (amount causing a 50% reduction in fertilization as compared to the control) of the final purified factor was 45 micrograms protein. Purity was established by standard and sodium dodecyl sulfate disc gel electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing, high-pressure liquid chromatography, and sedimentation analysis. These methods, as well as Sepharose gel filtration, were also used for the molecular weight estimations; good agreement was obtained between the various techniques. The factor appears to be a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of about 200,000. It consists of two subunits with molecular weights of about 125,000 and 72,000 and s-20,w of 6.2 s and 4.3 s. The factor contains relatively high amounts of aspartic acid and glutamic acid residues as well as leucine and serine, but only small amounts of tryptophan and no methionine was detected. The carbohydrate fraction is particularly rich in galactose and N-acetylgalactosamine but also contains mannose and N-acetylglucosamine and small amounts of fucose and sialic acid.
Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) hindlimb joint kinetics: propulsive and energy storage mechanisms and mechanical work

Abstract:As seasonal migratory animals, reindeer inhabit the natural habitats in Arctic regions and have evolved their hindlimb joints to adapt to the complex ground conditions there. Inverse dynamics of the joints is an important tool to study foot functions. Herein, with a motion tracking system and plantar pressure data based on kinematics and inverse dynamics of hindlimbs, we investigated the changes in joint angles, net joint moments, net joint powers, and work of reindeer at different speeds. Reindeer may adopt different movement patterns to efficiently utilize energy and adapt to the demands of different gaits and speeds. The joint ranges of motion (ROM) of the ankle joint ( α b ), metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint ( α c ), and interphalangeal joint ( α d ) of the hindlimbs were about 20.73°–28.87°, 40.37°–47.69°, and 24.47°–26.18°, respectively. The ankle joint produced positive work to provide propulsion. The positive work done at the ankle joint during walking, slow trotting, and fast trotting was 8.61 × 10 –2 , 9.25 × 10 –2 , and 15.44 × 10 –2 J·kg −1 , respectively. The MTP and interphalangeal joints both absorbed energy during walking, slow trotting, and fast trotting. The energy absorption at the respective speeds was 12.53 × 10 –2 , 13.57 × 10 –2 , and 19.90 × 10 –2 J·kg −1 , respectively, by the MTP joint and was 9.49 × 10 –2 , 7.71 × 10 –2 , and 10.26 × 10 –2 J·kg −1 , respectively, by the interphalangeal joint. The MTP joint and interphalangeal joint of the hindlimbs serve as the primary sites for energy storage and release, functioning as an elastic system. This study contributes to a deeper understanding about the biomechanical properties of hindlimb joints and provides a theoretical basis for designing extremity robots in extreme environments through analyzing the functional characteristics of reindeer foot joints.

Abstract:Aquatic birds represent diverse ecologies and locomotion types. Some became flightless or lost the ability for effective terrestrial locomotion, yet, certain species excel in water, on land, and in air, despite differing physical characteristics associated with each medium. In this exploratory study, we intend to quantitatively analyze the morphological variety of multiple limb bones of aquatic birds using 3D geometric morphometrics. Morphological variation is mainly driven by phylogeny, which also affects size and locomotion. However, the shape of the ulna, including the proportion and orientation of the epiphyses is influenced by size and aquatic propulsive techniques even when phylogeny is taken into consideration. Certain trends, possibly linked to functions, can be observed too in other bones, notably in cases where phylogenetic and functional signals are probably mixed when some taxa only englobe species with similar functional requirements: penguins exhibit the most distinctive wing bone morphologies, highly adapted to wing‐propulsion; advanced foot‐propellers exhibit femur morphology that reduces proximal mobility but supports stability; knee structures, like cnemial crests of varied sizes and orientations, are crucial for muscle attachments and efficient movement in water and on land; taxa relying on their feet in water but retaining terrestrial abilities share features enabling swimming and walking postures. Size‐linked changes distinguish the wing bones of non‐wing‐propelled taxa. For hindlimbs, larger size relates to robust bones probably linked to terrestrial abilities, but robustness in femora can be connected to foot‐propulsion. Limb loss and specialized leg dynamics in tiny water-walking insects

Abstract:The air-water of the planet’s water bodies, such as ponds, lakes and streams, presents an uncertain ecological niche with predatory threats from above and below. As move across the water surface in small ponds, they face potential injury from attacks by birds, fish, and underwater invertebrates. Thus, our study investigates the effects of losing individual or pairs of tarsi on the ability to walk on water. Removal of both hind tarsi causes . to rock their bodies (yaw) while running across the water surface at ±19°, compared to ±7° in non-ablated specimens. This increase in yaw, resulting from the removal of hind tarsi, indicates that use their hind legs as ‘rudders’ to regulate yaw, originating from the contralateral middle legs’ strokes on the water’s surface through an alternating tripod gait. Ablation of the ipsilateral middle and hind tarsi disrupts directionality, making turn in the direction of their intact limbs. This loss of directionality does not occur with the removal of contralateral middle and hind tarsi. However, lose their ability to use the alternating tripod gait to walk for water walking on the day of contralateral ablation. Remarkably, by the next day adapt and regain the ability to walk on water using the alternating tripod gait. Our findings elucidate the specialized leg dynamics within the alternating tripod gait of ., and their adaptability to tarsal loss. This research could guide the development and design strategies of small, adaptive, and resilient micro-robots that can adapt to controller malfunction or actuator damage for walking on water and terrestrial surfaces.

Abstract:Reindeer ( Rangifer tarandus ) have lengthy seasonal migrations on land and their feet possess excellent locomotor characteristics that can adapt to complex terrains. In this study, the kinematics and vertical ground reaction force (GRF) of reindeer forelimb joints (interphalangeal joint b , metacarpophalangeal joint c , and wrist joint d ) under walk, trot 1, and trot 2 were measured using a motion tracking system and Footscan pressure plates. Significant differences among different locomotor activities were observed in the joint angles, but not in changes of the joint angles ( α b , α c , α d ) during the stance phase. Peak vertical GRF increased as locomotor speed increased. Net joint moment, power, and work at the forelimb joints were calculated via inverse dynamics. The peak joint moment and net joint power related to the vertical GRF increased as locomotor speed increased. The feet absorbed and generated more energy at the joints. During different locomotor activities, the contribution of work of the forelimbs changed with both gait and speed. In the stance phase, the metacarpophalangeal joint absorbed more energy than the other two joints while trotting and thus performed better in elastic energy storage. The joint angles changed very little (∼5°) from 0 to 75% of the stance phase, which reflected the stability of reindeer wrist joints. Compared to typical ungulates, reindeer toe joints are more stable and the stability and energy storage of forelimb joints contribute to locomotor performance in reindeer.

Abstract:The interaction among joints of the midtarsal complex and subtalar joint is essential role for locomotor function; however, its complexity poses substantial challenges in quantifying their motions. We determine the mobility of these joints across locomotion tasks and investigate their alignment with individual talus morphology. Utilizing highly accurate biplanar videoradiography, three-dimensional bone kinematics were captured during walking, running, and hopping. We calculated the axis of rotation of each midtarsal and subtalar joint for the landing and push-off phases, respectively. A comparison was made between these rotation axes and the morphological subtalar axis. Measurement included total rotation about, the orientation of the rotation axes in the direction of the subtalar joint and its deviation via spatial angles for both phases. The rotation axes of all three bones relative to the talus closely align with the morphological subtalar axis. This suggests that the midtarsal and subtalar joints’ motions might be described by one commonly oriented axis. Despite having such axis, the location of axes and ranges of motion differed among the bones. Our results provide a novel perspective of healthy foot function across different sagittal plane-dominant locomotion tasks underscoring the importance of midtarsal and subtalar motion with respect to subject-specific talus morphology.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: With hydrotherapy rising in the United Kingdom, before understanding the effect of hydrotherapy in animals with pathologies, kinematics data for healthy animals is required.OBJECTIVES: To assess how different water levels on an underwater treadmill (UWTM) can affect joint kinematics.METHODS: Zinc oxide markers were placed on bony landmarks on the limbs of 10 healthy dogs, randomly split into five groups. An UWTM was used with water levels to the digits, tarsus, stifle and hip. The maximum flexion, extension and ROM were determined and a repeated measures ANOVA or Friedman's was used to determine significant differences.RESULTS: We have detected various changes in kinematics following exercise at different water levels, in comparison with a dry treadmill, including consistent increases in flexion of the elbow, stifle and tarsal joints, which were observed for all water levels. The carpal joint had increases in flexion all water levels apart from digit level. An increase in shoulder flexion was seen only with water on or above stifle level, while hip kinematics had the fewest changes with only ROM increasing at high water level (hip level). Extension of the limbs joints was not markedly affected, with only a few data being significant. The carpal joint had an overall decrease in extension with water at all levels, and the stifle joint had a decreased extension when water was at stifle height.CONCLUSIONS: Water level can significantly affect joint kinematics, and knowledge of how each water level affects the joints is relevant to design tailored hydrotherapy protocols.

Abstract:Although typically possessing four limbs and short bodies, lizards have evolved a diversity of body plans, from short-bodied and fully-limbed to elongate and nearly limbless. Such diversity in body morphology is hypothesized as adaptations to locomotion cluttered terrestrial environments, but the mode of propulsion -- e.g., the use of body and/or limbs to interact with the substrate -- and potential body/limb coordination remain unstudied. Here, we use biological experiments, a geometric theory of locomotion, and robophysical experiments to comparatively and systematically investigate such dynamics in a diverse sample of lizard morphologies. Locomotor field studies in short-limb, elongated lizards (Brachymeles) and laboratory studies of full-limbed lizards (Uma scoparia and Sceloporus olivaceus) and a limbless laterally undulating organism (Chionactis occipitalis) reveal that the body wave dynamics can be described by a combination of traveling and standing waves; the ratio of the amplitudes of these components is inversely related to limb length. We use geometric theory to analyze and explain the wave dynamics and body-leg coordination observations; the theory predicts that leg thrust modulates the body weight distribution and self-propulsion generation mechanism, which in turn facilitates the choice of body waves. We test our hypothesis in biological experiments by inducing the use of traveling wave in stereotyped lizards by modulating the ground penetration resistance, as well as in controlled non-biological experiments involving an undulating limbed robophysical model. Our models could be valuable in understanding functional constraints on the evolutionary process of elongation and limb reduction in lizards, as well as advancing robot designs.
