Abstract:This paper aims at developing a highly efficient walking scheme for compass-like biped robots with feet. Towards this goal, a latch attached to the hip is introduced to lock the hip joint when the hip joint retracts to the desired value and spring devices are installed in the ankle joints to reduce the inputs of the ankles. Moreover, the stance foot allowed to rotate about the toe is considered. With these setups, a highly efficient limit-cycle walking gait is obtained by using the method of Poincaré shooting with the objective of minimizing the dimensionless specific mechanical cost of transport. However, this limit-cycle walking gait is unstable. To stabilize it, a new control strategy is proposed based on transverse coordinate linearization on moving Poincaré sections. A series of numerical simulations show that such a robot model under the proposed control law can walk stably and efficiently.

Abstract:In this paper, we address the critical challenge of gait transitions for legged robots, focusing on the challenges of versatile phase transitions and the generation of stable motion. We begin by investigating the deleterious phenomenon of phase locking and systematically identify the conditions under which it occurs in conventional diffusively coupled nonlinear oscillators. On this basis, we propose an innovative diffusive central pattern generator (CPG) whose ability to enable seamless phase transitions between different gait patterns is theoretically validated. To address the stability issues associated with the transition between gaits, we present a robust motion generation system that incorporates stability criteria and enables dynamic and responsive trajectory adjustments to improve the stability of the robot. To assess the proposed method, we conducted experiments from two primary perspectives. Firstly, we compared the gait transition capabilities of the proposed CPG model with three commonly used CPG models. In comparison to the other models, the proposed model overcomes the phenomena of phase locking and enables swift transitions between arbitrary gaits. Secondly, we examine the impact of our approach on the stability of gait transitions, both through simulation and on a physical hexapod robot. The results demonstrate that the proposed motion generation framework significantly improves the robot’s motion stability during the gait transition.

Abstract:Synopsis Terrestrial animals must often negotiate heterogeneous, varying environments. Accordingly, their locomotive strategies must adapt to a wide range of terrain, as well as to a range of speeds to accomplish different behavioral goals. Studies in Drosophila have found that inter-leg coordination patterns (ICPs) vary smoothly with walking speed, rather than switching between distinct gaits as in vertebrates (e.g., horses transitioning between trotting and galloping). Such a continuum of stepping patterns implies that separate neural controllers are not necessary for each observed ICP. Furthermore, the spectrum of Drosophila stepping patterns includes all canonical coordination patterns observed during forward walking in insects. This raises the exciting possibility that the controller in Drosophila is common to all insects, and perhaps more generally to panarthropod walkers. Here, we survey and collate data on leg kinematics and inter-leg coordination relationships during forward walking in a range of arthropod species, as well as include data from a recent behavioral investigation into the tardigrade Hypsibius exemplaris. Using this comparative dataset, we point to several functional and morphological features that are shared among panarthropods. The goal of the framework presented in this review is to emphasize the importance of comparative functional and morphological analyses in understanding the origins and diversification of walking in Panarthropoda. Abstract:To efficiently move around, animals need to coordinate their limbs. Proper, context-dependent coupling among the neural networks underlying leg movement is necessary for generating intersegmental coordination. In the slow-walking stick insect, local sensory information is very important for shaping coordination. However, central coupling mechanisms among segmental central pattern generators (CPGs) may also contribute to this. Here, we analyzed the interactions between contralateral networks that drive the depressor trochanteris muscle of the legs in both isolated and interconnected deafferented thoracic ganglia of the stick insect on application of pilocarpine, a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor agonist. Our results show that depressor CPG activity is only weakly coupled between all segments. Intrasegmental phase relationships differ between the three isolated ganglia, and they are modified and stabilized when ganglia are interconnected. However, the coordination patterns that emerge do not resemble those observed during walking. Our findings are in line with recent studies and highlight the influence of sensory input on coordination in slowly walking insects. Finally, as a direct interaction between depressor CPG networks and contralateral motoneurons could not be observed, we hypothesize that coupling is based on interactions at the level of CPG interneurons.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Maintaining functional interleg coordination is vitally important as animals locomote through changing environments. The relative importance of central mechanisms vs. sensory feedback in this process is not well understood. We analyzed coordination among the neural networks generating leg movements in stick insect preparations lacking phasic sensory feedback. Under these conditions, the networks governing different legs were only weakly coupled. In stick insect, central connections alone are thus insufficient to produce the leg coordination observed behaviorally.
Limb loss and specialized leg dynamics in tiny water-walking insects

Abstract:The air-water of the planet’s water bodies, such as ponds, lakes and streams, presents an uncertain ecological niche with predatory threats from above and below. As move across the water surface in small ponds, they face potential injury from attacks by birds, fish, and underwater invertebrates. Thus, our study investigates the effects of losing individual or pairs of tarsi on the ability to walk on water. Removal of both hind tarsi causes . to rock their bodies (yaw) while running across the water surface at ±19°, compared to ±7° in non-ablated specimens. This increase in yaw, resulting from the removal of hind tarsi, indicates that use their hind legs as ‘rudders’ to regulate yaw, originating from the contralateral middle legs’ strokes on the water’s surface through an alternating tripod gait. Ablation of the ipsilateral middle and hind tarsi disrupts directionality, making turn in the direction of their intact limbs. This loss of directionality does not occur with the removal of contralateral middle and hind tarsi. However, lose their ability to use the alternating tripod gait to walk for water walking on the day of contralateral ablation. Remarkably, by the next day adapt and regain the ability to walk on water using the alternating tripod gait. Our findings elucidate the specialized leg dynamics within the alternating tripod gait of ., and their adaptability to tarsal loss. This research could guide the development and design strategies of small, adaptive, and resilient micro-robots that can adapt to controller malfunction or actuator damage for walking on water and terrestrial surfaces.

Context-dependent coordination of movement in Tribolium castaneum larvae

Abstract:Pest insects like Tribolium castaneum beetles cause 10.8% of global stored grain losses. However, how their nervous systems coordinate adaptive movements for successful infestation is unknown. Here, we assess how Tribolium larvae locomote over different substrates and analyze their gait kinematics across speeds. Unlike many hexapods, larvae employ a bilaterally symmetric, posterior-to-anterior wave gait during fast locomotion. During slow locomotion, thoracic intrasegmental coordination is disrupted, whilst intersegmental coordination is preserved. Additionally, terminal abdominal structures (pygopods) support challenging locomotion, such as climbing overhangs. The onset of pygopod engagement coincides with leg swing initiation, suggesting a stabilizing role. Surgically severing the connective between thoracic and abdominal ganglia impaired pygopod engagement and impeded flat-surface locomotion, climbing, and tunnelling without interrupting leg kinematics. These results suggest that thoracic-abdominal coordination underlies effective movement, and gait/limb recruitment is context-dependent. Our work provides the first kinematic analysis of Tribolium larval locomotion and insights into its neural control.

Abstract:Abstract Legged locomotion through natural environments is very complex and variable. For example, leg kinematics may differ strongly among species, but even within the same species it is adaptive and context-dependent. Inter-species differences in locomotion are often difficult to interpret, because both morphological and ecological differences among species may be strong and, as a consequence, confound each other's effects. In order to understand better how body morphology affects legged locomotion, we compare unrestrained whole-body kinematics of three stick insect species with different body proportions, but similar feeding ecology: Carausius morosus, Aretaon asperrimus and Medauroidea extradentata (= Cuniculina impigra). In order to co-vary locomotory context, we introduced a gradually increasing demand for climbing by varying the height of stairs on the set-up. The species were similar in many aspects, for example in using distinct classes of steps, with minor differences concerning the spread of corrective short steps. Major differences were related to (1) antenna length, (2) segment lengths of thorax and head, and (3) the ratio of leg length over body length: (1) Whereas all species continuously moved their antennae, only Medauroidea executed high swing movements with its front legs to search for obstacles in the near-range environment. (2) Whereas all species adjusted their body inclination, the range in which body segments moved differed considerably, with longer thorax segments tending to be moved more. (3) Finally, leg posture, time courses of leg joint angles and intra-leg coordination differed most strongly in long-legged Medauroidea.

Abstract:This paper describes the design and control concepts of a mammal-like hexapod walking robot. It has a hexapod configuration and is driven by 12 digital servomotors which are controlled by main processor located on the main body. The novel mechanical design with 12 degrees of freedom is introduced as well as the hardware architecture of the control system. In this study, the alternative tripod gait is generated and realized by inverse kinematics method in the single-leg physical model with the foot trajectories planned. Dynamic calculation and simulation results demonstrate the validity of the design concept. The experiments prove that the robot could achieve the straight-line walking with good performance.

Abstract:Insects exhibit remarkable adaptability in their locomotive strategies across diverse environments, a crucial trait for foraging, survival, and predator avoidance. , tiny 2-3 mm insects that adeptly walk on water surfaces, exemplify this adaptability by using the alternating tripod gait in both aquatic and terrestrial terrains. These insects commonly inhabit low-flow ponds and streams cluttered with natural debris like leaves, twigs, and duckweed. Using high-speed imaging and pose-estimation software, we analyze . movement across water, sandpaper (simulating land), and varying duckweed densities (10%, 25%, and 50% coverage). Our results reveal maintain consistent joint angles and strides of their upper and hind legs across all duckweed coverages, mirroring those seen on sandpaper. adjust the stride length of their middle legs based on the amount of duckweed present, decreasing with increased duckweed coverage and at 50% duckweed coverage, their middle legs’ strides closely mimic their strides on sandpaper. Notably, achieve speeds up to 56 body lengths per second on water, nearly double those observed on sandpaper and duckweed (both rough, frictional surfaces), highlighting their higher speeds on low friction surfaces such as the water’s surface. This study highlights ’s ecological adaptability, setting the stage for advancements in amphibious robotics that emulate their unique tripod gait for navigating complex terrains.

Abstract:Bionic-legged robots draw inspiration from animal locomotion methods and structures, demonstrating the potential to traverse irregular and unstructured environments. The ability of Portunus trituberculatus (Portunus) to run flexibly and quickly in amphibious environments inspires the design of systems and locomotion methods for amphibious robots. This research describes an amphibious crab-like robot based on Portunus and designs a parallel leg mechanism for the robot based on biological observations. The research creates the group and sequential gait commonly used in multiped robots combined with the form of the robot’s leg mechanism arrangement. This research designed the parallel leg mechanism and modeled its dynamics. Utilizing the outcomes of the dynamics modeling, we calculate the force and torque exerted on each joint of the leg mechanism during group gait and sequential gait when the robot is moving with a load. This analysis aims to assess the performance of the robot’s motion. Finally, a series of performance evaluation experiments are conducted on land and underwater, which show that the amphibious crab-like robot has good walking performance. The crab-like robot can perform forward, backward, left, and right walking well using group and sequential gaits. Simultaneously, the crab-like robot showcases faster movement in group gaits and a more substantial load capacity in sequential gaits.

Abstract:A recent experiment (X. F. Gao and L. Jiang, Nature 432, 36 (2004)) showed that a water strider statically standing on water can bear a load up to 60 times its body weight with its middle and hind legs, which tread deep puddles without piercing the water surface. This fact has been ascribed to the superhydrophobicity of the water strider legs. In the present paper, this viewpoint is argued by our comparative experiments using real water strider legs with superhydrophobicity and artificial legs made of wax-coated steel wires with a much smaller Young's contact angle. It is found that the adaptive-deformation capacity of the real leg through its three joints makes a more important contribution to the superior load-bearing ability than the superhydrophobicity. This conclusion is also demonstrated by our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:This paper proposes a control scheme inspired by the biological equilibrium point hypothesis (EPH) to enhance the motion stability of large-size legged robots. To achieve stable walking performances of a large-size hexapod robot on different outdoor terrains, we established a compliant-leg model and developed an approach for adapting the trajectory of the equilibrium point via contact force optimization. The compliant-leg model represents well the physical property between motion state of the robot legs and the contact forces. The adaptation approach modifies the trajectory of the equilibrium point from the force equilibrium of the system, and deformation counteraction. Several real field experiments of a large-size hexapod robot walking on different terrains were carried out to validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the control scheme, which demonstrated that the biologically inspired EPH can be applied to design a simple linear controller for a large-size, heavy-duty hexapod robot to improve the stability and adaptability of the motion in unknown outdoor environments.

Abstract:Force feedback could be valuable in adapting walking to diverse terrains but the effects of changes in substrate inclination on discharges of sensory receptors that encode forces have rarely been examined. In insects, force feedback is provided by campaniform sensilla, mechanoreceptors that monitor forces as cuticular strains. We neurographically recorded responses of stick insect tibial campaniform sensilla to 'naturalistic' forces (joint torques) that occur at the hind leg femur-tibia (FT) joint in uphill, downhill and level walking. The FT joint torques, obtained in a previous study that used inverse dynamics to analyze data from freely moving stick insects, are quite variable during level walking (including changes in sign) but are larger in magnitude and more consistent when traversing sloped surfaces. Similar to vertebrates, insects used predominantly extension torque in propulsion on uphill slopes and flexion torques to brake forward motion when going downhill. Sensory discharges to joint torques reflected the torque direction but, unexpectedly, often occurred as multiple bursts that encoded the rate of change of positive forces (dF/dt) even when force levels were high. All sensory discharges also showed hysteresis and substantial decrease or complete cessation during transient force decrements. These findings have been tested in simulation in a mathematical model of the sensilla (Szczecinski et al. 2021) which accurately reproduced the biological data. Our results suggest the hypothesis that sensory feedback from the femoro-tibial joint indicating force dynamics (dF/dt) can be used to counter the instability in traversing sloped surfaces in animals and, potentially, in walking machines.

Abstract:ABSTRACT To traverse complex terrain, animals often transition between locomotor modes. It is well known that locomotor transitions can be induced by switching in neural control circuits or driven by a need to minimize metabolic energetic cost. Recent work revealed that locomotor transitions in complex 3D terrain cluttered with large obstacles can emerge from physical interaction with the environment controlled by the nervous system. For example, to traverse cluttered, stiff grass-like beams, the discoid cockroach often transitions from using a strenuous pitch mode pushing across the beams to using a less strenuous roll mode rolling into and through the gaps. This transition can save mechanical energetic cost substantially (∼100–101 mJ) but requires overcoming a potential energy barrier (∼10−3–10−2 mJ). Previous robotic physical modeling demonstrated that kinetic energy fluctuation of body oscillation from self-propulsion can help overcome the barrier and facilitate this transition. However, the animal was observed to transition even when the barrier still exceeded kinetic energy fluctuation. Here, we further studied whether and how the cockroach makes active adjustments to facilitate this transition to traverse cluttered beams. The animal repeatedly flexed its head and abdomen, reduced hindleg sprawl, and depressed one hindleg and elevated the other during the pitch-to-roll transition, adjustments which were absent when running on a flat ground. Using a refined potential energy landscape with additional degrees of freedom to model these adjustments, we found that head flexion did not substantially reduce the transition barrier (by ∼10−3 mJ), whereas leg sprawl reduction did so dramatically (by ∼10−2 mJ). We speculate that head flexion is for sensing the terrain to guide the transition via sensory feedback control.

Abstract:This paper provides a legged stable walking control strategy based on multi-sensor information feedback about BIT-NAZA-II, a large load parallel hexapod wheel-legged robot developing for the problem of vertical contact impact and horizontal sliding of heavy leg robot in complex terrain environments. The BIT-NAZA-II robot has six legs and six wheels, and the wheels are installed on the foot-end. The wheels of each foot-end for the legs of the robot are locked when walking with legs. In order to realize the smooth transition between swing phase and stance phase, the leg motion is divided into different stages for control by state machine switching controller based on event (SMSCE). In the Z-direction, in order to avoid the shaking of the body caused by the contact impact at the moment of contact between the foot-end and the ground during the walking of the robot, an active compliance controller (ACC) based on impedance control (IC) is applied to solve the problem of contact impact. Moreover, in the X-direction, the swing leg retraction (SLR) based on Bezier curve (BC) is introduced to generate the foot-end trajectory of the robot, which solves the slip problem of the heavy leg robot and improves the horizontal stability. Finally, the control strategy of stable walking is respectively verified by the simulations and experiments. The results show that the ACC based on IC can effectively reduce the contact impact between the foot-end and the ground in the Z-direction and improve the stability of body. Besides, the anti-sliding ability is realized after introducing SLR based on BC in the X-direction, and we also verify that stable walking control strategy is effective, which provides a reference value for the stable walking of heavy leg robot in complex terrain.

Abstract:While most insect-inspired robots come with a simple tarsus such as a hemispherical foot tip, insect legs have complex tarsal structures and claws, which enable them to walk on complex terrain. Their sharp claws can smoothly attach and detach on plant surfaces by actuating a single muscle. Thus, installing insect-inspired tarsus on legged robots would improve their locomotion on complex terrain. This paper shows that the tendon-driven ball-socket structure provides the tarsus both flexibility and rigidity, which is necessary for the beetle to walk on a complex substrate such as a mesh surface. Disabling the tarsus' rigidity by removing the socket and elastic membrane of a tarsal joint, the claws could not attach to the mesh securely. Meanwhile, the beetle struggled to draw the claws out of the substrate when we turned the tarsus rigid by tubing. We then developed a cable-driven bio-inspired tarsus structure to validate the function of the tarsus as well as to show its potential application in the legged robot. With the tarsus, the robotic leg was able to attach and retract smoothly from the mesh substrate when performing a walking cycle.

Foot placement control underlies stable locomotion across species

Abstract:Animals navigate their environment stably without inefficient course corrections despite unavoidable errors. In humans and some robots, this stability is achieved by controlling the placement of the foot on the ground such that recent movement errors are corrected. However, it is unknown whether and how animals with diverse nervous systems and body mechanics use such foot placement control: foot trajectories of many-legged animals are considered as stereotypical velocity-driven patterns, as opposed to error-driven. Here, we posit a control structure for stabilizing foot placement in any legged embodiment by unifying velocity-driven and body state-driven contributions, and develop a framework to discover control strategies used across species from natural locomotor variability. Using this framework, we find evidence for body state-dependent foot placement control in flies and mice, previously only shown to exist in humans. We discover that the urgency and centralization of the foot placement control strategy is shaped by the animal's neuromechanical embodiment. More inherently stable many-legged embodiment is associated with a lower control magnitude and timescale. Further, many-legged embodiment is accompanied by decentralized control with modular control functions, timescales, and gains, whereas analogous functions are centralized across both legs in humans. Our approach discovers signatures of stabilizing control across species and reveals how different neuromechanical embodiments achieve a shared functional goal: foot placement control.

Abstract:The ability to upright quickly and efficiently when overturned on the ground (terrestrial self-righting) is crucial for living organisms and robots. Previous studies have mapped the diverse behaviors used by various animals to self-right on different substrates, and proposed physical models to explain how body morphology can favor specific self-righting methods. However, to our knowledge no studies have quantified and modeled all of an animal’s limb motions during these complicated behaviors. Here, we studied terrestrial self-righting for nymphs of the invasive spotted lanternfly ( ), an insect that must frequently recover from being overturned after jumping and falling in its native habitat. These nymphs self-righted successfully in 92-100% of trials on three substrates with different friction and roughness, with no significant difference in the time or number of attempts required. They accomplished this using three stereotypic sequences of movements. To understand these motions, we combined 3D poses tracked on multi-view high-speed video with articulated 3D models created using photogrammetry and Blender rendering software. The results were used to calculate the mechanical properties (e.g., potential and kinetic energy, angular speed, stability margin, torque, force, etc.) of these insects during righting trials. We used an inverted physical pendulum model (a “template”) to estimate the kinetic energy available in comparison to the increase in potential energy required to flip over. While these insects began righting using primarily quasistatic motions, they also used dynamic leg motions to achieve final tip-over. However, this template did not describe important features of the insect’s center of mass trajectory and rotational dynamics, necessitating the use of an “anchor” model comprising the 3D rendered body model and six articulated two-segment legs to model the body’s internal degrees of freedom and capture the role of the legs’ contribution to inertial reorientation. This anchor elucidated the sequence of highly coordinated leg movements these insects used for propulsion, adhesion, and inertial reorientation during righting, and how they frequently pivot about a body contact point on the ground to flip upright. In the most frequently used method, diagonal rotation, these motions allowed nymphs to spin their bodies to upright with lower force with a greater stability margin compared to the other less frequently-used methods. We provide a concise overview of necessary background on 3D orientation and rotational dynamics, and the resources required to apply these low-cost modeling methods to other problems in biomechanics.
