Abstract:Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loss from rice paddy fields represents a significant threat to water quality in China. In this project, three irrigation-drainage regimes were compared, including one conventional irrigation-drainage regime, i.e. continuous submergence regime (CSR), and two improved regimes, i.e. the alternating submergence-nonsubmergence regime (ASNR) and the zero-drainage irrigation technology (ZDIT), to seek cost-effective practices for reducing nutrient loss. The data from these comparisons showed that, excluding the nutrient input from irrigation, the net exports of total N and total P via surface field drainage ranged from -3.93 to 2.39 kg ha and 0.17 to 0.95 g ha(-1) under the CSR operation, respectively, while N loss was -2.46 to -2.23 kg ha(-1) and P export was -0.65 to 0.31 kg ha(-1) under the improved regimes. The intensity of P export was positively correlated to the rate of P application. Reducing the draining frequency or postponing the draining operation would shift the ecological role of the paddy field from a nutrient export source to an interception sink when ASNR or the zero-drainage water management was used. In addition, since the rice yields are being guaranteed at no additional cost, the improved irrigation-drainage operations would have economic as well as environmental benefits.

Abstract:In most cases, rice production is associated with flooding irrigation and the efficiency of irrigated water use (WUEi) is generally lower for production of rice than for other crops. We have examined the effects of various irrigation regimes on water consumption in a well-puddled paddy field, as well as on dry matter production, grain yield and physiological responses of the plants. Four sets of conditions were studied, with two replications, in the well-puddled paddy field: Continuous flooding irrigation treatment (CSF); three intermittent irrigation treatments, designated II-0, II-1 and II-2, in which plants were re-irrigated when the water potential of the soil fell below 0, –10, and –20 kPa at a depth of 5 cm, respectively. Water consumption was lower during II-0 than during CSF because the percolation rate was reduced by the reduction in the hydraulic head of the ponded water. Intermittent irrigation led to the repeated shrinking and swelling of soil during II-1 and II-2 and, therefore, soil cracks developed rapidly. Since they became the major routes of water percolation, these soil cracks increased water consumption during II-1 and II-2 above that during CSF and II-0. There were no significant differences in dry matter production and grain yield between CSF and II-0, but both were significantly greater than in the case of II-1 and II-2. Therefore, WUEi increased in the following order: II-0, CSF, II-2, II-1, although the difference was very small between II-1 and II-2. A lower crop growth rate (CGR) resulted from a decrease in the net assimilation rate (NAR) during II-1 and II-2, and there was also a reduction in the leaf area index (LAI) during II-2. Early senescence with ripening and water stress around midday decreased the rate of photosynthesis in leaves, causing the lower NAR. These physiological responses of the plants were responsible for the reduction on the dry matter production and grain yield in the intermittent irrigation.
Effects of water source and technology on energy use and environmental impacts of rice production in northern Iran

Abstract:To assess the sustainability of rice production systems, it is essential to quantify its impact on the environment and energy flow. To analyze the energy flow and greenhouse gas emissions, a total of 200 paddy fields were selected based on the water source utilized for irrigation (river as the surface water source and well as the underground water source), transplanting methods (traditional and mechanical) and grain yield (low‐ and high‐yielding rice cultivars) based on a factorial experimental design (2×2×2=8 conditions). Data were collected in 2020 from 200 rice growers in northern Iran, using a face‐to‐face questionnaire survey. Results showed that the highest total energy use efficiency (5.26 Gj ha‐1) was observed under the surface water source+traditional+low‐yielding rice system. Although the total energy use efficiency in surface water source was higher than that in groundwater source (4.98 vs. 2.90). Water consumption by high‐yielding rice cultivars was higher, as compared to the low‐yielding ones. Electricity (35.2%) and nitrogen fertilizer (31.5%) inputs were the highest energy input for the groundwater and surface water sources, respectively. Average shares of the renewable and non‐renewable energies used in agroecosystems were 25.70 and 74.30% respectively, while the shares of the direct and indirect energies were 60.36 and 39.64%, respectively. The calculated global warming potential value in the paddy fields of northern Iran ranged from 878 to 2666 kg eq‐CO2 ha‐1. Amongst the studied conditions, the surface water source+traditional+high‐yielding rice system had the highest carbon efficiency and carbon sustainability index level. Overall, surface water source conditions were found to be a more environmentally‐friendly approach in northern Iran. These results, thus, demonstrated that there is a huge potential for improving energy efficiency in the studied conditions, especially for high‐yielding rice cultivars irrigated by surface water sources. These findings could help decision‐makers to better understand the linkage between various conditions, which is a prerequisite to any planning effort for future management strategies at national and international levels. Abstract:It is unknown how the Cd-mediated changes in the rhizospheric nitrifier community affect plant growth under different water management practices. This study examined the effect of Cd on microbial N transformation and its association with rice growth in two water regimes, continuous flooding (CF) and alternate wetting and drying (AWD), in a paddy soil. The 16S rRNA, amoA genes in the rhizosphere and endosphere, and OsNTRs were determined using qPCR. Nitrifier community analysis was performed by sequencing the amoA genes. Concentrations of N and Cd in shoots and roots, and IAA in the roots were determined by flow injection analyzer, ICP-MS and enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA), respectively. The direct and indirect negative effects of Cd bioavailability in the rhizosphere on plant growth and ultra-structure of roots and leaves were greater under AWD than CF after 56-day growth. Nitrifier community was changed by water and Cd treatments. Crenarchaeota, Nitrosopumilus, Nitrosopira, and Nitrosovibrio tenuis related species were the dominant nitrifier players. Increasing Cd level decreased plant N uptake, root-IAA concentration, and the abundance of 16S rRNA gene in the rhizosphere and endosphere to a greater extent under AWD than under CF. This in turn decreased the colonization of endophytes and the surface area of the roots, leading to decreased N uptake from the soil. The results imply that appropriate water management and rhizospheric engineering in Cd-contaminated paddy fields may be important approaches to decreasing plant Cd uptake and rhizospheric nitrification.

Abstract:World agriculture currently faces great challenges in producing sufficient food while minimizing negative environmental effects of crop cultivation,requiring us to rethink current agricultural production processes.Traditional agricultural systems based on local species diversity and interactions have contributed to food and livelihood security throughout the world for centuries.As human population increased,however,traditional agricultural systems faced daunting challenges in food demand and supply due to the lower economic benefits of the systems.Thus improving the productivity of traditional agricultural systems in a sustainable way has been of great concerned to producers and decision-makers.To determine the feasibility of increasing traditional agricultural productivity without corresponding increase in negative environment impacts,two experiments were conducted at a traditional rice-fish co-culture site that had been operated for over 1 200 years in southern Zhejiang Province.In the first experiment,three treatments without pesticide,including rice monoculture(RM),rice-fish co-culture(RF) and fish monoculture(FM),were compared.In addition to measured rice yield(in RM and RF),fish yield(in RF and FM),and surveyed input-output economics,focus was put on total nitrogen(TN),total phosphorus(TP),total ammonia nitrogen(NH4+-N) and chemical oxygen demand(COD) in field water.Four fish density treatments,including with target fish yields in rice-fish co-culture fields of 750 kg?hm?2(RF750),1 500 kg?hm?2(RF1500),2 250 kg?hm?2(RF2250) and 3 000 kg?hm?2(RF3000),were designed in the second experiment.Rice and fish yields,input and output of economics,and TN,TP,NH4+-N and COD were measured in the field water.The first experiment showed no significant difference in rice yield between RM and RF.There was also no significant difference in fish yield between RF and FM in the experiment.However,total and net income of the system were higher in RF than in RM and FM.Field water contents of TN,TP,NH4+-N and COD were not significantly different between RF and RM.The second experiment showed that rice yield,fish yield,and total and net economic output increased with increasing fish stock density and fish feed input.Increase in fish stock density increased target yield of fish by 1 500 kg?hm?2(50%),significantly increased net income of rice-fish co-culture systems by 25.2%~101.4%,and also increased COD,TN,TP and NH4+-N content in field water.When target yield was 3 000 kg?hm?2,TP and COD contents became significantly higher than in other treatments;which enhanced risk of environmental pollution.Economic analysis indicated that target fish yield of 2 250 kg?hm?2 gave higher economic income and with little impact on field water environment.
An Internet-Based Smart Irrigation Approach for Limiting Phosphorus Release from Organic Fertilizer-Amended Paddy Soil

Abstract:We are still challenged to fully understand to what extent controlling irrigation inputs is important for limiting phosphorus (P) losses from paddy soils and how this affects the contribution of dissolved P (DP), particulate P (PP), and colloidal P (P-coll) fractions in P losses. For this investigation, an internet-based smart irrigation system was developed to precisely implement different irrigation scenarios-flooding irrigation (FI) and two water-saving irrigation (WSI) scenarios of intermittent (II) and controlled irrigation (CI). A simulation experiment was conducted and the concentrations of total P (TP), DP, PP, and P-coll released to floodwater (FW) and leachate (LW) were determined during a rice season after the addition of different P forms (chemical fertilizer (CP), biogas slurry (BP), and manure (MP)) at a rate of 40 kg P.ha(-1). The results revealed that the CI scenario effectively decreased P losses in FW (similar to 51%) and LW (similar to 63%) with a positive WSI ratio (39.1%), while II reduced it in FW by similar to 11% and in LW by similar to 27% with a WSI ratio of 11.0% compared with FI. The BP and MP additions caused a higher risk of P losses than CP under FI, with lower risk under WSI. DP largely contributed to P losses (FW: 30%-71%; LW: 42%-66%); however, more PP was released to FW under II (37%-54% of TP). The Pcoll (FW: 5%-23% and LW: 6%-24%) was more sensitive to release at initial periods after fertilization on account PP. This work provides a promising approach to timely control irrigation inputs, which could limit P losses from paddy soil; however, there remains a need to assess and generalize our initial evidence at field scales. Comparative study of efficiencies of purification of cadmium contaminated irrigation water by different purification systems

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice threats food safety and human health. Control of Cd pollution has become an urgent need. Most existing studies on heavy metal pollution control have focused on industrial wastewater and few on irrigation water. Some researchers have found ecological ditches, plant ponds and constructed wetlands have the potential of treating heavy metal contaminated irrigation water, but they examined only one of the methods and the validity needs to be verified by field studies. Our study has filled the gap by combining the methods and using field experiments. We examined efficiencies of removal of Cadmium from irrigation water by 14 different combinations of ecological ditches, plant ponds, and constructed wetlands using field experiments. The effects of the purification on Cd concentration in paddy soil and rice grains were also examined. Results showed that there were significant differences among efficiencies of purification of Cd contaminated irrigation water using different systems and that pH, chemical form of Cd in irrigation water, vegetation coverage and biomass of aquatic plants significantly affect the efficiency. Of the 14 purification systems, seven resulted in the concentration of Cd in the effluent water meeting the National Standard for Irrigation Water Quality (GB5084-2021) for all days of the experiment period. The highest amount and rate of Cd removal were achieved by the combination of two-stage ecological ditch, two-stage plant pond, and one-stage constructed wetland, while the highest removal amount and rate per 100 m2 was achieved by the combination of one-stage plant pond and one-stage constructed wetland. Considering purification efficiency, area of coverage, and cost of construction and maintenance, we suggest that combination of plant pond and constructed wetland be a priority choice for purification of Cd pollution in irrigation water. Compared to the control data collected from rice grain and paddy soil irrigated by unpurified water, Cd concentration in rice grain and paddy soil irrigated by purified water declined by 5.08-19.42 % and 30.93-77.15 % respectively. All results showed that removal of Cd contamination from irrigation water effectively controlled cadmium pollution in rice grain and paddy soil. Our study not only contributes to pollution control practice, but also warrants further investigation of the mechanisms of how the treatment systems work. The most efficient method we identified could be applied locally, regionally and in areas of similar topography, climate, soil, vegetation, agriculture, and heavy metal pollution.
Attention to Threat in High and Low Trait-Anxious Individuals: A Study Using Extremely Threatening Pictorial Cues

Abstract:Previous research suggested that individuals with high trait anxiety have difficulties disengaging their attention from threatening cues, whereas those with low trait anxiety have no such attentional bias. However, according to some cognitive models of threat-related attention, low anxious people should show the same pattern as high anxious people when the threat value is large enough. To test this hypothesis, extremely threatening pictures were used as predictive location cues in a cue-target task. Neutral pictures were included as controls. 15 High Anxious participants and 17 Low Anxious participants were selected from 213 volunteers who all were police veterans. Analysis showed that threat cues produced greater facilitation effects than neutral cues, but this was not modulated by anxiety. This suggests that both high and low anxious individuals may have difficulties disengaging their attention from threat-cued locations when the threat value is large enough.
Effects of Paddy Rain-Flood Storage on Rice Growth Physiological Indices and Nitrogen Leaching under Organic Planting in Erhai Lake Basin

Abstract:In order to address the increasingly prominent issues of water resource protection and agricultural non-point source pollution in the Erhai Lake Basin, this study conducted a two-year field experiment in Gusheng Village, located in the Erhai Lake Basin. In 2022, two irrigation treatments were set up: conventional flooding irrigation (CK) and controlled irrigation (C), with three replicates for each treatment. In 2023, aiming to enhance the utilization rate of rainwater resources and reduce the direct discharge of dry-farming tailwater from upstream into Erhai Lake. The paddy field was used as an ecological storage basin, and the water storage depth of the paddy field was increased compared to the depth of 2022. Combined with the deep storage of rainwater, the dry-farming tailwater was recharged into the paddy field to reduce the drainage. In 2023, two water treatments, flooding irrigation with deep storage and controlled drainage (CKCD) and water-saving irrigation with deep storage and controlled drainage (CCD) were set up, and each treatment was set up with three replicates. The growth and physiological index of rice at various stages were observed. Nitrogen leaching of paddy field in surface water, soil water, and groundwater under different water treatments after tillering fertilizer were observed. The research results show that the combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers under organic planting can provide more reasonable nutrient supply for rice, promote dry matter accumulation and other indices, and also reduce the concentration of NH4+-N in surface water. Compared with CK, the yield, 1000-grain weight, root-to-shoot ratio, and leaf area index of C are increased by 4.8%, 4.1%, 20.9%, and 9.7%, respectively. Compared with CKCD, the yield, 1000-grain weight, root-to-shoot ratio, and leaf area index of CCD are increased by 6.5%, 3.8%, 19.6%, and 21.9%, respectively. The yield in 2023 is 19% higher than that in 2022. Treatment C can increase the growth indicators and reduce the net photosynthetic rate to a certain extent, while CCD rain-flood storage can alleviate the inhibition of low irrigation lower limit on the net photosynthetic rate of rice. Both C and CCD can reduce nitrogen loss and irrigation amount in paddy fields. CCD can reduce the tailwater in the Gusheng area of the Erhai Lake Basin to Erhai Lake, and also can make full use of N, P, and other nutrients in the tailwater to promote the formation and development of rice. In conclusion, the paddy field rain-flood storage methodology in the Erhai Lake Basin can promote various growth and physiological indicators of rice, improve water resource utilization efficiency, reduce direct discharge of tailwater into Erhai Lake, and decrease the risk of agricultural non-point source pollution.

Environmental impacts of fertilization during rice production in saline-alkali paddy fields based on life cycle assessment

Abstract:While increasing rice yield, the irrational application of nitrogen fertilizers in paddy fields leads to diverse environmental impacts. However, there exists a dearth of comprehensive research systematically addressing these impacts, particularly in areas affected by salinization. This study employs the life cycle assessment (LCA) method to evaluate the environmental impacts of five commonly used fertilizers during rice production in saline-alkali paddy fields. Additionally, the economic benefits of these fertilizers were analyzed. Across all treatments, regardless of per unit yield and cultivated area, urea (U) treatment exhibited the highest total environmental impact potential (TEIP) value, while organic-inorganic compound fertilizer (OCF) treatment recorded the lowest. Notably, freshwater eutrophication contributes significantly to TEIP in each treatment compared to other midpoint impacts. For OCF treatment, the negative NEIP values of global warming and stratospheric ozone depletion indicate lower impacts than the other five treatments, respectively. The total endpoint damage potentials of OCF treatment per unit yield and unit area were −75.4331 Pt and −927.8271 Pt, respectively, both lower than the other five treatments. Furthermore, the yield and net income of OCF treatment stands at 12.30 t/ha and 29691.51 CNY/ha, surpassing all other five treatments. In summary, OCF emerges as an effective nitrogen fertilizer with low input, minimal risk, and substantial benefits when applied to rice production in salinized areas. This study introduces LCA to conduct a comprehensive analysis of rice production in saline-alkali areas, providing essential data for decision-makers to understand the potential environmental impacts of different nitrogen fertilizer applications. By considering various environmental risks and economic benefits simultaneously, this approach offers a methodological framework to support optimized fertilization strategies. This promotes the sustainable development of paddy fields in saline-alkali regions, advancing efficiency and emission reduction practices in rice cultivation.

Quantitative and qualitative management of water resources with the use of treated wastewater in agriculture

Abstract:The principled utilization of treated wastewater can reduce the pollution load on the environment. Because on the one hand, treated wastewater can be a suitable fertilizer substitute, and on the other hand, using treated wastewater in irrigation prevents the discharge of polluted surface water into water sources. In the south of Tehran province, polluted surface water is used for irrigation in the agricultural sector, and this has led to environmental problems. To solve this problem, it has been decided to implement a plan to build surface water treatment plants and an irrigation and drainage network to transfer treated wastewater to farms. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the economic and environmental effects of this project in the region. A hydro-economic model has been used to achieve this goal. According to the results, in the case of the application of environmental constraints in the optimization model, the cultivation area and the farmers' profit will be reduced by about 5% and 36%, respectively, compared with the noncompliance of environmental constraints. However, this decline in profit can be compensated by adopting solutions such as improving the irrigation system, the application of treated wastewater, or using the fertilizer potential of water sources in the agricultural sector. PRACTITIONER POINTS: In the optimal economic-environmental situation, farmers' profit is reduced compared with the optimal economic situation. In the case of implementing the treated wastewater application, the farmers' profit will increase despite environmental constraints. In the optimal economic-environmental situation, fewer lands are cultivated with diverse crops than in optimal economic conditions.
Nutrient Uptake and Water Use Efficiency As Affected by Modified Rice Cultivation Methods with Reduced Irrigation

Abstract:A field experiment was conducted in 2005 to investigate the effects of modified rice cultivation methods on: water use efficiency, the uptake of nutrients (N, P and K) by plants, and their distribution within plants and their internal use efficiency. The treatments were modified methods of irrigation, transplanting, weeding, and nutrient management, comparing the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) with standard rice-growing methods including traditional flooding (TF). Results showed that the uptake of N, P, and K by rice plants during their growth stages was greater with SRI management compared to TF, except during the tillering stage. At maturity stage, SRI plants had taken up more nutrients in their different major organs (leaves, stems, and sheaths; panicle axis; and seeds), and they translocated greater amount of nutrients to the grain. Under SRI, the ratio of N, P, and K in seed grain to total plant N, P, and K was 4.97, 2.00, and 3.01% higher, respectively, than with TF. Moreover, under SRI management, internal use efficiency of the three macronutrients (N, P, and K) was increased by 21.89, 19.34, and 16.96%, respectively, compared to rice plants under TF management. These measurements calibrate the crop’s physiological response to differences in cultural practices, including the maintenance of aerobic versus anaerobic environment in the root zones. With SRI, irrigation water applications were reduced by 25.6% compared to TF. Also, total water use efficiency and irrigation water use efficiency was increased with SRI by 54.2 and 90.0%, respectively. Thus, SRI offered significantly greater water saving while at the same time producing more grain yield, in these trials 11.5% more compared to TF.

Abstract:Rice paddies are unique ecosystems that provide rich wetland habitat. Their enduring existence across vast stretches of land has led them to evolve into unique systems serving a diverse assemblage of organisms and sustaining a staple grain for many people. With food demand rising, agricultural intensification through agrochemical application is a common practice used to boost food production in developing countries, including Sri Lanka. The aim of the present study was to assess the concentration of pesticide residues in water in rice ecosystems and discover their potential impacts on both environmental health and the most common fauna groups across a cropping year in Sri Lanka. A total of 270 water samples from waters associated with paddy fields within a watershed were analyzed for 20 commonly used pesticides; in addition, local farm holders were surveyed to assess pesticide usage details in three selected paddy tracts. We then used the Cornell University environmental impact quotient (EIQ) calculator and the ECOTOX Knowledgebase to determine the exposure risk associated with individual pesticides relative to their application rates and aquatic concentrations. Survey results demonstrate that several pesticides were overapplied at rates 1.2-11 times the recommended application, and the EIQ demonstrated high environmental risk of two of the agrochemicals detected, 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic and diazinon. Fish, amphibians, insects, and beetles were found to have a wide range of potential adverse outcomes from exposure to diazinon, captan, thiamethoxam, and chlorantraniliprole. To balance the trade-offs between food security and ecosystem sustainability, the present study recommends that adoption of quantifiable environmental health indicators be considered as part of the national policy regulating pesticide use. Abstract:A field experiment was conducted during the wet seasons of 2013 and 2014 to evaluate the effect of three rice establishment methods: viz. puddled transplanted rice (PTR), system of rice intensification (SRI) and aerobic rice system (ARS), two cyanobacteria based inoculants, viz. Anabaena sp (CR1) + Providencia sp (PR3) consortium and Anabaena-Pseudomonas (An-Ps) biofilm formulation, and zinc (Zn) fertilization on the rice yield, water productivity, and nutrient use efficiency. The yields of rough, brown and milled rice were highest in SRI, which was on par with PTR and both methods proved significantly superior to ARS in both years. The total water productivity of rough and brown rice in the first year was significantly higher in SRI. The SRI method saved 21.9% and 27.4% irrigation water over PTR, and savings in ARS were 37.4% and 50.8% in first and second year respectively, over PTR. The use of An-Ps biofilm formulation along with 75% RDN improved the agronomic use efficiency of both nitrogenous and phosphatic fertilizers applied. On the basis of the present study, it can be concluded that SRI improved rice yields and water productivity; while involvement of An-Ps biofilm formulation can be recommended for improved nutrient use efficiency.

Potential Nutrient Removal Function of Naturally Existed Ditches and Ponds in Paddy Regions: Prospect of Enhancing Water Quality by Irrigation and Drainage Management

Abstract:Conventionally, paddy fields are regarded as important non-point sources of nutrient pollution, while ecological ditches and ponds are developed to reduce or retain nutrient export from agricultural fields. To quantify the potential nutrient removal function of ditches and ponds that naturally existed in rice growing regions, a representative paddy irrigation and drainage unit (IDU) composed of fields, ditches and a pond in the one-season rice region of the middle Changjiang River basin, China was monitored for two years. With data and knowledge gained, a Water Quantity and Quality Model for Paddy IDUs (WQQM-PIDU) is developed and applied for 30 years simulation to produce a general view. The monitored and modelled results showed that nutrient concentration peaks after fertilization was delayed and lowered in ditches and ponds, compared to those in paddy fields. Concentrations of runoff from the IDU outlet were generally lower than from the field during the whole rice growing season except the transplanting period. If fully utilized as temporary reservoirs, ditches and ponds naturally existed in a typical paddy IDU would reduce 39% nitrogen loads from field edges with a range of 17%-93% and 28% phosphorus loads with a range of 12%-92%. Although typical paddy IDUs discharge fewer nutrient loads than the content input into them, the discharge concentrations may be risky to surface waters. For their nutrient removal function, natural ditches and ponds are recommended to be included into irrigation and drainage management with accurate water level management during drainage, which is a promising and cost-effective approach to enhance surface water quality in rice growing regions. Controlled Irrigation and Drainage Reduce Rainfall Runoff and Nitrogen Loss in Paddy Fields

Abstract:In southern China, the growing period of rice is synchronized with the rainy period, and the loss of nutrients (such as nitrogen) due to unreasonable irrigation and drainage, along with rainfall and runoff, has become the main source of agricultural nonpoint source pollution. The laws of runoff and nitrogen loss in paddy fields under different irrigation and drainage modes are not clear. In this study, field experiments were adopted to observe the runoff and nitrogen loss under typical rainfall and throughout the whole growth period. The results showed that, compared with the traditional irrigation and drainage mode, the controlled irrigation and drainage mode reduced the drainage of two typical rainfall processes by 47.5% and 31.3% and the peak drainage by 38.9% and 14.4%. Compared with those under the traditional irrigation and drainage mode, the average concentrations of total nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and ammonium nitrogen under the controlled irrigation and drainage mode were reduced by 22.2%, 22.7%, and 27.8%, respectively, during the whole rainfall process on July 21 and were decreased by 27.1%, 11.4%, and 25.6%, respectively, on August 25. In irrigated rice areas, under the controlled irrigation and drainage mode, drainage was reduced after two intercepts through paddy fields and drainage ditches. The nitrogen concentration in the drainage ditch decreased due to the increase in retention time and the effect of the ditch and field wetland. Compared with the traditional irrigation and drainage mode, the total nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and ammonium nitrogen loads of the controlled irrigation and drainage mode were reduced by 69.8%, 65.3%, and 69.7%, respectively.

Evaluating contamination impact of wastewater irrigation to soils in Zahedan, Iran

Abstract:With respect to water crisis, using urban wastewater to irrigate urban green spaces is an upcoming strategy. The pollution of lands irrigated with wastewater is one of the upcoming challenges. The main purpose of the present study was to investigate contamination indices of soils irrigated with wastewater. In this study, field experimental method in statistical form of totally random blocks with three reiterations for considered treatments was employed. To this end, one piece of three-hectare grass irrigated with wastewater and one piece of land irrigated with well water (control sample) were selected out of the green spaces of Zahedan refinery. Then, 30 compound samples were randomly taken from the depth of 0-50 cm of three lands' soil. The refinery wastewater outlet and wall water were also sampled. Physicochemical and biological features of wastewater, wall water and soil samples irrigated with the refinery wastewater and well water were measured according to the standard methods. The obtained data were analyzed using MSTAT-C software. Based on the obtained results, the modified degree of contamination (mCd) of highly and lowly used elements in the considered soils in the experiment was less than 1, indicating a low-contamination status. PLI index of the mentioned elements in the surface soil of grass irrigated with wastewater was higher than 1 and by wall water was less than 1. The concentration of sulfur in surface soil of the two treatments under investigation was in a highly severe enrichment factor (EF ≥ 50). In addition, the concentration of nitrogen, magnesium, zinc and manganese in the surface soil of palm trees and that of manganese, copper and manganese in the surface soil of the grass irrigated with wastewater had a high enrichment factor (5 ≤ EF < 25). Geoaccumulation index (Igeo) of sulfur in the surface soil of the pieces irrigated with wall water (control) and that of potassium in the surface soil of the grass irrigated with wastewater were in no-contamination or average-contamination statuses (0 < Igeo ≤ 1). Other elements were in non-contaminated status (Igeo ≤ 0) in terms of Igeo. The results of investigation of soil contamination indices showed that the soil contamination status of the study area due to wastewater irrigation was low to medium. Therefore, periodic and more accurate monitoring of wastewater treatment plant of Zahedan can be used from this wastewater for landscapes irrigation.
Higher Rice Productivity and Lower Paddy Nitrogen Loss with Optimized Irrigation and Fertilization Practices in a Rice-Upland System

Abstract:Intermittent irrigation and controlled-release fertilizers are considered effective practices for rice growth; however, their combined effects on nitrogen (N) loss from intensified agricultural lands remain unclear. Here, a two-year field experiment was conducted using two irrigation regimens (flooded irrigation, FI; controlled irrigation, CI) and two fertilizer types (conventional urea, CU, split applied; controlled-release blend fertilizer, CRBF, one-time basal applied) to investigate their effects on N turnover in rice upland systems. The results demonstrated that CI not only saved 56.7 % of irrigation water compared to FI but also increased rice yield (5.3 %) and N use efficiency (7.8 %). The significant reduction in water input and soil water content for the CI led to lower N leaching (47.5 %) and N runoff (20.2 %) than for the FI. In contrast, N2O emissions increased by 27.8 % under CI compared with FI. CRBF reduced NH3 volatilization by 18.8 % and improved N use efficiency by 14.0 %, due to decreased N diffusion from the soil to surface water compared to CU. However, the N runoff of the CRBF was 23.8 % greater than that of the CU. The CI-CRBF improved the rice yield by 6.3 % and decreased N loss (22.3 %) by reducing NH3 volatilization (21.4 %) and N leaching (46.9 %). The findings suggest CI-CRBF to be an eco-friendly and lightly simplified pattern in rice upland systems, with higher rice productivity and lower paddy N loss.

Abstract:Rice, the predominant food crop in India, is being grown traditionally with improper plant nutrient management mostly under the flooded situation. Recent advancement in research on crop science focuses on water-saving rice technologies for maximization in crop and water productivity under the backdrop of a shrinking water resource base for ensuring environmental and agricultural sustainability. Under this situation, an experiment was conducted in two consecutive years in a split-plot design keeping rice cultivation methodologies, viz., aerobic culture, System of Rice Intensification (SRI), and conventional flooded culture in main plots and integrated plant nutrient management (INM) treatments in sub-plots. The experiment was aimed at understanding the effects of different rice production systems and INM on nutrient content, uptake, and use efficiency. The change in soil quality parameters was also studied to understand the impact of crop establishment methods (CEM) and INM options. Significant reduction (p ≤ 0.05) in nutrient uptake and use efficiency was observed under aerobic culture compared to SRI and flooded method, although aerobic culture showed the highest physiological nitrogen use efficiency. Post-harvest available Fe status was significantly lower in aerobic rice (mean 10.39 ppm) compared to other crop establishment technologies; however, Zn status was higher in aerobic rice over the flooded situation. Although available potassium was not affected due to rice cultivation methods, available nitrogen and phosphorus status were influenced remarkably. Soil microbial quality was improved in aerobic rice in comparison to flooded rice. SRI proved to be the most efficient rice establishment method for enhancement in nutrient uptake, use efficiency, and enrichment of soil chemical and microbiological quality. Irrespective of crop culture, integrated plant nutrition in rice improved the nutrient uptake, use efficiency, and soil quality parameters. The study revealed that, under the alluvial soils of the Indo-Gangetic Plains of Eastern India, SRI can be considered as a water-saving rice production method. The method can also improve nutrient uptake, efficiency, and soil quality parameters if proper INM is adopted.

Abstract:Herbicides play a pivotal role in paddy rice cultivation by effectively controlling weeds, thus ensuring optimal resource utilisation and higher crop yields, making them indispensable for efficient rice production systems. However, herbicide applications could be related to potential environmental impacts such as water contamination and harm to non-target species, requiring special attention in their management to ensure the long-term sustainability of rice farming practices. The development and utilisation of robust risk assessment indicators for pesticides are essential tools in evaluating and mitigating potential environmental and human health hazards associated with pesticide use in agricultural practices. The Environmental Potential Risk Indicator for Pesticides (EPRIP) is not suitable for rice paddy cultivation due to its limitations in accurately assessing pesticide risk in this specific agricultural context. This is primarily attributed to the unique hydrological characteristics and ecosystem dynamics of paddy fields, which significantly differ from other agricultural systems. To address this issue and to enhance the accuracy of pesticide risk assessment in rice paddy fields, EPRIP has been improved and validated in two agricultural seasons. A synergistic approach involving field experiments and enhanced EPRIP model simulations was employed to assess the risk associated with the application of two herbicides in Italian paddy rice systems. The observed and model-predicted surface water (SW) concentrations exhibited a close alignment, though an overestimation was observed for groundwater (GW). In general, the estimated Risk Points (1 for SW and 4 for GW) were largely in accord with those derived from the field experiments (1 for SW and 3 for GW), suggesting that the refined EPRIP model holds promise for conducting reliable risk assessments following herbicide applications in such contexts.
