Abstract:Off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is an alternative to conventional CABG using cardiopulmonary bypass. Off-pump technique reduces the complications of CABG performed with extracorporeal circulatory assistance (Lancey et al. 2000; Mack et al. 2004a,b). The object of this study was to compare peri- and postoperative time courses of vasoactive peptides - atrial natriuretic poptide (ANP), brain natriuretic poptide (BNP) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) in off-pump versus on-pump CABG. 22 patients, who underwent on-pump (group A, n = 11) or off-pump CABG (group B, n = 11) were studied. The peri- and postoperative time courses of plasma ANP and BNP were similar in both groups. A statistically significant difference between ET-1 plasma level 2 h after surgery in the group A and ET-1 plasma level 2 h after surgery in the group B (2.46 + or - 1.14 pg/ml/Ht versus 0.74 + or - 0.09 pg/ml/Ht, p < 0.0001) was found. Different CABG techniques were not associated with significant changes in peri- and postoperative plasma ANP and BNP. By contrast, plasma ET-1 significantly rose in the group A 2 h after surgery, indicating endothelial damage.

Abstract:Histamine injected into the hepatic artery of the dog causes dose-dependent hepatic arterial vasodilatation, whilst injections of histamine into the hepatic portal vein elicit dose-dependent portal vasoconstriction; both effects are mediated primarily through histamine H1-receptors (Richardson & Withrington, 1976, 1977). We have now examined the effects of intra-arterial and intraportal injections of histamine on the sympathetically-innervated hepatic arterial and portal venous vascular beds where both were perfused simultaneously, using a combination of techniques previously reported for the separate perfusion of the two circuits: control values were similar to those in previous publications (Richardson & Withrington, 1976, 1977). Intra-arterial injections of histamine (0.1-50 jg) elicited dose-dependent hepatic arterial vasodilatation with a maximum reduction in hepatic arterial vascular resistance (HAVR) of 44.2 + 4.3% (mean + s.e. mean; n = 8). These injections also produced dosedependent increases in hepatic portal vascular resistance (HPVR) of up to 161.6 + 54.5% on injection of histamine (50 gg) into the hepatic artery. The delay between the injection and onset of the hepatic arterial response to a selected dose (10 jg) of histamine (2.4 + 0.3 s) was significantly shorter than that to the increases in HPVR (7.7 + 1.2 s; P < 0.01). However, both hepatic vascular effects significantly preceded reductions of 5.0 + 1.2 mm Hg in systemic arterial pressure (BP) resulting from histamine entering the systemic circulation (15.6 + 1.2 s; P < 0.005). Intraportal injections of histamine (0.1-100 jg) caused dose-dependent increases in HPVR (maximum = 220.5 + 75.7%) and in addition, dose-dependent hepatic arterial vasodilatation (maximum reduction in HAVR = 37.8 + 4.1%, n = 8). On intraportal injection of histamine (10 gg), the hepatic arterial response had a significantly shorter latency than the increase in HPVR (7.2 + 0.8 s and 11.44 + 1.3 s respectively; P < 0.005), and both liver vascular effects significantly preceded the onset of reductions of 6.6 + 1.2 mm Hg in BP at 14.6 + 1.2 s (P < 0.02). The lowest doses of intraportal histamine (0.1-1.0 jg) caused negligible changes in HPVR, no systemic effects, but increases in hepatic arterial blood flow of up to 15%. The time courses of the responses to intra-arterial and intraportal histamine compared with those of the reductions in BP suggested that the effects on the two liver circuits could not be attributed to recirculation. This was further examined by injecting histamine (10 jg) into the inferior vena cava at the level of the hepatic veins: reductions of 19.5 + 4.5 mm Hg in BP occurred 4.5 + 1.0 s after injection, followed significantly later (P < 0.001) by the hepatic arterial (18.9 + 0.9 s) and portal (16.0 + 1.1 s) responses. These experiments illustrate that when histamine is released into the portal bloodstream from the gastrointestinal tract in shock or anaphylaxis (Kahlson & Rosengren, 1971), it may cause increases in hepatic arterial blood flow even though vasoactive concentrations of histamine are not attained in the systemic circulation.

Abstract:Abstract The transition into elite-level sport can expose young athletes to risk factors for mental ill-health, including increased performance expectations, stressors associated with becoming increasingly public figures, and changes in lifestyle demands, such as diet, training loads and sleep. Successful integration into elite-level sport requires athletes to quickly adapt to these newfound challenges and the norms and culture of the new sport setting, while developing relationships with teammates, coaches, and support staff. Despite these demands, the mental health experiences of athletes transitioning into elite-level sport have been largely neglected in sport psychology literature. This is reflected in the dearth of programs for supporting mental health during this career phase, particularly relative to retirement transition programs. In this article, we offer a preliminary framework for supporting athletes’ mental health during the transition into elite-level sport. This framework is based on holistic, developmental, and ecological perspectives. Our framework outlines a range of recommendations for promoting mental health and preventing mental ill-health, including individual-level, relational, sport-level, and sociocultural-level strategies. Key recommendations include preparing athletes for the challenges they are likely to face throughout their athletic careers, highlighting athletes’ competence earlier in their careers, developing supportive relationships in the sport setting, and fostering psychologically safe sporting cultures. Supporting mental health from earlier in the athletic career is likely to promote athletes’ overall wellbeing, support enjoyment and retention in sport, and encourage help-seeking.

Abstract:Understanding and positively influencing athlete mental health have become key goals for researchers and sporting stakeholders (e.g. coaches, support staff, clubs and governing bodies). In this article, we outline a novel perspective for tackling these challenges, drawing on an influential theory of group processes. This social identity approach can, we argue, help explain when and why the characteristics and demands of sport, which is typically a collective endeavour, pose a threat to athlete mental health and provide a guiding framework for efforts to protect and enhance athlete mental health. Here, we seek to illustrate the value of a social identity analysis of athlete mental health through three key points that speak to its analytical and practical value. Specifically, we propose: (1) that social identities can act as psychological resources that support athlete mental health, (2) that social identities are critical to athlete mental health during and after sporting transitions and (3) that leadership informed by a social identity approach can facilitate athlete mental health. With a view to maximising the value of our analysis both for those working with athletes and for researchers, we also identify practical steps that relevant stakeholders could take to support athlete mental health, and key avenues for future research to further test our propositions and advance understanding. Our analysis provides a new lens through which all those invested in understanding and supporting athlete mental health can approach these challenges, and a foundation for novel solutions.

Abstract:Worldwide the demand on a higher level of automatic control of power systems rises to comply with system objectives of reliability, efficiency, cost minimization as well as emission requirements. With the transition of the power systems towards a more volatile on-site generation based on renewable resources, a higher degree of flexibility in energy consumption for reduced system congestion is evident. This paper presents a real-time information system for active control of the demand side in Japanese power grids. The proposed system allows local data processing of environmental and consumption data to schedule and curtail loads of shops, small and medium size enterprises. The concept comprises specialized control hardware for end-use supervision, local and internet based server architecture and control methods for global energy management.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to present existential and cultural psychology approaches to understanding athlete identity, and offer strategies for the development of well-rounded, reflexive and self-aware youth sports performers. Recently, the sport psychology discourse on athletic identity has diversified with a range of alternative approaches and methodologies now being employed by academics and applied practitioners. These alternative approaches advocate that identity interests can be simultaneously personal, social and cultural. Consequently, we recommend that Sport Psychology Consultant's (SPC's) should operate at both an organizational and individual level with the aim of facilitating elite youth athletes to (a) identify meaningful personal goals and values, (b) take responsibility and ownership for their development, (c) reflect on their limitations and possibilities, and (d) embrace not diminish alternative narratives.

Abstract:Retirement from sport is widely accepted as an important period of change for athletes. Existing studies have focused on investigating the mental health and well-being of current players, while limited research has explored the impact of retirement on elite rugby players. The present study aimed to examine how athletic identity, psychological flexibility, and valued living impact subjective well-being and psychological distress in retired elite rugby players. A cross-sectional, between-subject, factorial design was adopted. Seventy-seven retired elite rugby players were recruited to the Tackling Next Steps project and completed an online survey between March 2021 and December 2021. Suboptimal levels of subjective well-being were reported by 64% of retired players, and 43% reported clinical levels of distress. Valued living and psychological flexibility were shown to significantly predict subjective well-being. The results show that promoting psychological flexibility and valued living may have positive effects on subjective well-being in retired rugby players.

Abstract:Abstract Background Success at the elite level in sport is often attributed to physical prowess, technical skill, and mental attitude. However, underpinning these factors are various lifestyle, support and social factors that may contribute to successful performance, but which may be absent from athlete development programs. Methods An online survey was used to investigate athlete perceptions of lifestyle practices and support services amongst 135 Australian Olympic, Paralympic, National, and state-level athletes across 25 Olympic sports. Results International athletes perceived psychological skills and attributes, along with strong interpersonal relationships as vital to their success, and they also rated ‘Recovery practices’ as very important and made extensive use of available support services. These athletes also indicated that they would have liked access to these services earlier in their careers, a wish that was reiterated by the sub-elite athletes. Furthermore, athletes wanted greater knowledge, mentoring, and autonomy earlier in their careers, and the importance of ‘athlete wellbeing’ as well as ‘athletic performance’ was evident in a number of contexts. Conclusions An athlete development system into which these are included may assist in generating an environment that facilitates athlete success, repeated podium performances, retain athletes in high-performance sport for longer, encourage human-flourishing, wellbeing and smooth transitions for retiring athletes.

Abstract:Retirement from sport is a life transition that has significant implications for athletes' physical and mental health, as well as their social and professional development. Although extensive work has been done to review the retirement experiences of athletes, relatively less work has been done to examine and reflect on this expansive body of literature with a pragmatic aim of deciding what needs to happen to better support retiring athletes. This study used scoping review methodology to review current academic reviews, gray literature articles, and support programs on athletic retirement. This review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute reviewer's manual guide on scoping reviews and adhered to the PRISMA-ScR checklist. Academic articles were identified from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Scopus. Gray literature articles and support programs were identified using advanced Google searches. This study identified 23 academic reviews, 44 gray literature articles, and 15 support programs. Generally, the results suggest that athletic retirement encompasses a drastic shift in identity, a loss of social networks, a lack of career ambitions, and potential risks to physical and mental health. While there was a gap in the academic literature regarding practical strategies to support retiring athletes, the gray literature suggests many creative ideas. Stepwise programming may be beneficial to help athletes: (a) make sense of their athletic experience and see retirement as an ongoing process; (b) develop a well-rounded sense of self identity and understand how to apply their unique skills and strengths in new ways; (3) gain control over their retirement transition by establishing a clear plan and adjusting to new routines and opportunities; and (4) normalize the transition experience by "living in the next" and building confidence in new life directions. Future research may benefit from developing and evaluating more programming to support athletes through the retirement transition.
Elite athletes' subjective wellbeing trajectories throughout the retirement transition: an analysis using Ruthven's (2022) transition model

Abstract:Aims: Utilizing Ruthven's (2022) transition model, we explored how identity, voluntariness, and reason for retirement are related to subjective wellbeing throughout an athlete's retirement. Methods: 541 participants completed an anonymous, online survey and estimated their wellbeing starting before retirement and up to the present. A set of linear mixed models regressed the seven wellbeing outcomes on the three measures, with education, gender, and time since retirement as covariates. Results: Identity: Athletic Identity wellbeing was significantly and consistently lower than Diversified Identity. Voluntariness: Surprise retirement was significantly more difficult and contributed to a sharper decline on the day of transition. Reason for retirement: Pursue Something Else and Right Time experienced no significant wellbeing changes, while Injury had a significant decline on their transition day. Motivation Loss experienced significantly lower wellbeing prior to retirement, and a significant, gradual rise on the day of and throughout their transition. Conclusions: There are wellbeing benefits for a diverse identity, voluntary retirement, and retiring due to pursuing something else, or feeling ready to retire. At risk groups include retiring due to injury, low motivation, and loss of eligibility/graduation. Findings support the benefit of utilizing a theoretical model to explain elite athlete outcomes.
End on a positive note: an exploration of flourishing, identity, and career confidence in professional Australian footballers transitioning out of football

Abstract:This study explored professional male Australian rules football players leaving the Australian Football League (AFL), either from retirement or from deselected from their team. Identified athletes (n = 425) transitioning from the AFL competition from years 2019 to 2021 were invited to participate in an anonymous online survey with 60% completing the survey. Using scaled-response questions, responses were compared between groups across a number of areas including their experience of leaving, athlete identity, the influence of sport in their daily life, psychological flourishing, financial confidence, social relationships, and future career preparations. Results showed deselected players (n = 152), compared to retired players (n = 56), reported shorter career spans, and poorer perception of their club's handling of the transition process (p < 0.001). Compared to retired players, deselected players reported stronger identity attachment to sport, less confidence in their financial capabilities, and career outside football (all p < 0.05). Conversely retired players, compared to deselected players, showed stronger psychological flourishing. Correlations showed that retired players were more confidence in their finances, reported greater psychological flourishing, and lower attachment to an athletic identity (all p ≤ 0.05). The results of this study suggest that as deselected players expressed poorer perception of club's handling of the transition process the role of AFL club staff could improve the transition process in in preparation for life outside of professional sport.

A qualitative study of a Sporting Memories program in South Australia: belonging, participation, and social connection

Abstract:Background: Older people can experience health and social challenges such as loneliness, depression, and lack of social connectedness. There is need for programs and approaches that address the growing incidence of social isolation and loneliness for older people. One initiative that aims to address these challenges is the Sporting Memories program. This program was developed in the United Kingdom and licensed to South Australia in 2019. The program is currently delivered across six community locations. Methods: The aim of this study was to explore participants perspectives of the Sporting Memories program in South Australia. Underpinned by qualitative research, three focus groups were conducted, led by an experienced interviewer. Focus groups occurred at three of the six locations, including a day respite center, assisted living center and a government community center. The data were analyzed thematically by the research team. Results: There were 16 participants over 65 years old, including four women and 12 men. Three key themes were developed: "free to talk about anything," "not feeling left out" and "a chance to share and learn." Collectively, participants reflected on how they built social connections, felt safe and included and learnt more about each other. Conclusion: The Sporting Memories program provides a group program for older people to come together and develop new friendships. The use of sports as a means of reminiscence was considered relatable for the participants who reported social benefits and plans to keep attending. They valued learning through the program which was enhanced by having a facilitator who was knowledgeable about sport.
An evaluation of a mental health literacy program for community sport leaders

Abstract:Community sports coaches and leaders can have an important role to play as informal resources for sporting adolescents and adults at risk of mental ill-health. Supporting coach mental health literacy using programs has potential to enhance opportunities for coach-player support. This study aimed to evaluate a community sport mental health literacy program and its capacity to improve club leader confidence to support and refer (primary outcome), awareness of resources, beliefs about mental health and stigmatizing attitudes (social distance). A cluster-randomized controlled evaluation was conducted with measures taken at baseline (around 2 weeks prior to intervention), immediately post-program and at a nine-month follow up. Twenty-five community Australian Rules Football clubs from metropolitan and regional centres were sampled and matched by size and location. Coaches or sport leaders ( n = 265) were randomized by club to either the intervention group or a waitlist control group. A multivariate analysis of variance (pre-test scores as covariates) revealed participants in the 'Tackle Your Feelings' (TYF) program reported improved outcomes compared to controls on measures tied to leader confidence to support and refer, knowledge of resources to support mental health, general help-seeking and stigmatizing attitudes tied to social distance. A fifth measure of beliefs about mental illness was not impacted by the program. A nine-month comparison group follow-up indicated some decay in scores over time. The results suggest that TYF programs can be effective at improving coach mental health literacy in community sporting club contexts.
Uncertainty, shame and consumption: negotiating occupational and non-work identities in community sports coaching

Abstract:This paper addressed the lived experiences of two community sports coaches in an era of neoliberal capitalism, consumerism, and insecure employment. Specifically, we considered (a) their attempts to develop a desired occupational identity in a casualised and audit-driven industry and (b) their experiences of the tensions that existed between the conditions of their employment and their ability to effectively enact other (important) identities outside of the workplace. Data were generated via 45 hrs of participant observation and 42 hrs of in-depth interviews. The fieldnotes and interview transcripts were iteratively analysed. Symbolic interactionist and postmodern theorisations of identity, work, and consumption were integrated to interpret the participants' experiences. Our analysis highlighted how the participants' identity management was influenced by the expectations of work and non-work social audiences and the motivational weight of their future aspirations. It also illustrated how the participants' readings of their employment conditions, dominant societal discourses regarding consumption, and subcultural expectations of success and failure informed their respective decision to leave this form of work. Based on these findings, we believe this study makes a substantive contribution to the evolving literature base addressing the identity management of sports workers, as well as our micro-level understandings of the impacts and consequences of neoliberal capitalism in sport.

Exploring the barriers and facilitators to mental health help-seeking behaviours in British elite track and field athletes

Abstract:Track and Field (T&F) is at the heart of the summer Olympic Games and research has highlighted mental health issues in this population, such as depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and eating disorders. Our qualitative study explored the barriers and facilitators to help-seeking behaviors among British athletes to help create, implement, and inform pathways for mental health support. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine elite T&F athletes (aged 21–27 years, M = 22.8), who had an average of five years' international competitive experience, including participating at various Commonwealth, European and World Championships. Four key themes were constructed and categorized as a barrier or facilitator to mental health help-seeking behaviors. Barriers included a lack of access to and prioritization of mental health support in comparison to physical health support and the scrutiny of others regarding mental health issues within (e.g., sports commentators) and outside (e.g., the public) the sport. In contrast, facilitators included normalizing mental health experiences through tailored online platforms and storytelling by role models and the team around the athlete in promoting openness to, and engagement with help-seeking. Overall, there is a need to embed mental health support into elite athletes' routines, to the equivalent level of physical health support. A novel outcome of our study identified the value of sports specific online platforms in increasing awareness and sharing experiences of mental health. Key stakeholders should consider supporting such online platforms and improve the dissemination of mental health information to strengthen communities that are supportive and nourishing to athletes. Lay Summary: Nine elite track and field athletes discussed factors impacting help-seeking for mental health. Data indicated the need to increase the provision of psychological support, so it is on par with support provided for physical health and to consider harnessing the potential of sport specific online platforms to normalize mental health. Our study reinforces the need for National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and sport practitioners to consider an increase in, and clarity over, the provision of sport psychology and mental health support in the track and field environment. It is essential to ensure that athletes know where and when to seek support and to normalize mental health issues within elite sport so they can be holistically supported. Sharing experiences of mental health via sport specific online platforms offer a novel but important context by which to empower athletes with their help-seeking intentions and challenges the stigma surrounding mental health in sport. NGB's may wish to expand and utilize such platforms to promote mental health support services or educational programmes.

Abstract:This study explored talent-development coaches’ experiences of athletes having faced mental health issues (MHIs). A second objective was to allow participants to share their opinion on how sport environments could improve the support offered to coaches and athletes encountering MHIs. A thematic analysis was performed on 11 verbatim-transcribed interviews conducted with UK-based talent-development coaches. While monitoring and supporting their athletes’ performance and well-being were viewed as day-to-day practice, dealing with MHIs was, however, not considered part of their role for a variety of reasons. Findings also suggest that coaches need more suitable and context-specific knowledge and tools to appropriately respond to and support their athletes. Generating a better understanding of coaches’ perceived role, knowledge, and needs to adequately support their athletes suffering from MHIs is crucial for the design of sport-specific interventions and for the athletes themselves.

Abstract:Abstract The current ‘state of play’ in supporting elite athlete mental health and wellbeing has centred mostly on building mental health literacy or awareness of the signs of mental ill-health amongst athletes. Such awareness is necessary, but not sufficient to address the varied mental health needs of elite athletes. We call for a new model of intervention and outline the backbone of a comprehensive mental health framework to promote athlete mental health and wellbeing, and respond to the needs of athletes who are at-risk of developing, or already experiencing mental health symptoms or disorders. Early detection of, and intervention for, mental health symptoms is essential in the elite sporting context. Such approaches help build cultures that acknowledge that an athlete’s mental health needs are as important as their physical health needs, and that both are likely to contribute to optimising the athlete’s overall wellbeing in conjunction with performance excellence. The proposed framework aims at (i) helping athletes develop a range of self-management skills that they can utilise to manage psychological distress, (ii) equipping key stakeholders in the elite sporting environment (such as coaches, sports medicine and high-performance support staff) to better recognise and respond to concerns regarding an athlete’s mental health and (iii) highlighting the need for specialist multi-disciplinary teams or skilled mental health professionals to manage athletes with severe or complex mental disorders. Combined, these components ensure that elite athletes receive the intervention and support that they need at the right time, in the right place, with the right person.

Abstract:To support the growing calls to safeguard athlete health and well-being in the pursuit of sporting success, empirical research into thriving may offer practitioners potential mechanisms to promote both outcomes simultaneously. Yet, given that elite sport environments are increasingly characterized as complex and volatile, applying theoretical knowledge is often not straightforward. In this novel study we aimed to bridge the gap between theory and practice by partnering with a sport psychologist to explore their experiences of promoting thriving within an Olympic sport organization. Using a participatory research approach in a typically inaccessible context, we sought to support the specific needs of the practitioner through a form of collaborative inquiry. Together, over a 9-month period, we navigated the complexities of translating knowledge into practice and present novel insights into the realities of effectively creating systems-level change. Namely, the need for practitioners to deftly negotiate complex interpersonal relationships and organizational cultures, and to democratize responsibility for psychological change to wider stakeholders. Regarding thriving, we demonstrate that the promotion of thriving requires an in-depth understanding of the athletic environment and organizational systems. Further, an array of athlete perspectives is needed when determining what contributes to and constitutes a thriving experience. Through our collaboration with an applied practitioner, this study makes a significant contribution toward bridging the gap between theory and practice. In doing so, we draw attention to the complex and challenging scenarios practitioners face when promoting change at an environmental level within elite sport organizations. Using a participatory research approach, we explored the experiences of a sport psychologist attempting to promote athlete thriving within a British Olympic sport organization. Our findings highlight the challenges and opportunities of practitioners working in these settings. • Practitioners seeking to promote athlete thriving need to develop an in-depth understanding of the athletic and organizational systems. • Thriving is a subjective experience therefore practitioners should consider how individual differences influence what athletes' need to thrive. • Practitioners must deftly negotiate complex interpersonal relationships when advocating for, instigating, and maintaining change on an organizational level.
