Abstract:Histamine injected into the hepatic artery of the dog causes dose-dependent hepatic arterial vasodilatation, whilst injections of histamine into the hepatic portal vein elicit dose-dependent portal vasoconstriction; both effects are mediated primarily through histamine H1-receptors (Richardson & Withrington, 1976, 1977). We have now examined the effects of intra-arterial and intraportal injections of histamine on the sympathetically-innervated hepatic arterial and portal venous vascular beds where both were perfused simultaneously, using a combination of techniques previously reported for the separate perfusion of the two circuits: control values were similar to those in previous publications (Richardson & Withrington, 1976, 1977). Intra-arterial injections of histamine (0.1-50 jg) elicited dose-dependent hepatic arterial vasodilatation with a maximum reduction in hepatic arterial vascular resistance (HAVR) of 44.2 + 4.3% (mean + s.e. mean; n = 8). These injections also produced dosedependent increases in hepatic portal vascular resistance (HPVR) of up to 161.6 + 54.5% on injection of histamine (50 gg) into the hepatic artery. The delay between the injection and onset of the hepatic arterial response to a selected dose (10 jg) of histamine (2.4 + 0.3 s) was significantly shorter than that to the increases in HPVR (7.7 + 1.2 s; P < 0.01). However, both hepatic vascular effects significantly preceded reductions of 5.0 + 1.2 mm Hg in systemic arterial pressure (BP) resulting from histamine entering the systemic circulation (15.6 + 1.2 s; P < 0.005). Intraportal injections of histamine (0.1-100 jg) caused dose-dependent increases in HPVR (maximum = 220.5 + 75.7%) and in addition, dose-dependent hepatic arterial vasodilatation (maximum reduction in HAVR = 37.8 + 4.1%, n = 8). On intraportal injection of histamine (10 gg), the hepatic arterial response had a significantly shorter latency than the increase in HPVR (7.2 + 0.8 s and 11.44 + 1.3 s respectively; P < 0.005), and both liver vascular effects significantly preceded the onset of reductions of 6.6 + 1.2 mm Hg in BP at 14.6 + 1.2 s (P < 0.02). The lowest doses of intraportal histamine (0.1-1.0 jg) caused negligible changes in HPVR, no systemic effects, but increases in hepatic arterial blood flow of up to 15%. The time courses of the responses to intra-arterial and intraportal histamine compared with those of the reductions in BP suggested that the effects on the two liver circuits could not be attributed to recirculation. This was further examined by injecting histamine (10 jg) into the inferior vena cava at the level of the hepatic veins: reductions of 19.5 + 4.5 mm Hg in BP occurred 4.5 + 1.0 s after injection, followed significantly later (P < 0.001) by the hepatic arterial (18.9 + 0.9 s) and portal (16.0 + 1.1 s) responses. These experiments illustrate that when histamine is released into the portal bloodstream from the gastrointestinal tract in shock or anaphylaxis (Kahlson & Rosengren, 1971), it may cause increases in hepatic arterial blood flow even though vasoactive concentrations of histamine are not attained in the systemic circulation.
Adaptation to life after sport for retired athletes: A scoping review of existing reviews and programs

Abstract:Retirement from sport is a life transition that has significant implications for athletes' physical and mental health, as well as their social and professional development. Although extensive work has been done to review the retirement experiences of athletes, relatively less work has been done to examine and reflect on this expansive body of literature with a pragmatic aim of deciding what needs to happen to better support retiring athletes. This study used scoping review methodology to review current academic reviews, gray literature articles, and support programs on athletic retirement. This review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute reviewer's manual guide on scoping reviews and adhered to the PRISMA-ScR checklist. Academic articles were identified from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Scopus. Gray literature articles and support programs were identified using advanced Google searches. This study identified 23 academic reviews, 44 gray literature articles, and 15 support programs. Generally, the results suggest that athletic retirement encompasses a drastic shift in identity, a loss of social networks, a lack of career ambitions, and potential risks to physical and mental health. While there was a gap in the academic literature regarding practical strategies to support retiring athletes, the gray literature suggests many creative ideas. Stepwise programming may be beneficial to help athletes: (a) make sense of their athletic experience and see retirement as an ongoing process; (b) develop a well-rounded sense of self identity and understand how to apply their unique skills and strengths in new ways; (3) gain control over their retirement transition by establishing a clear plan and adjusting to new routines and opportunities; and (4) normalize the transition experience by "living in the next" and building confidence in new life directions. Future research may benefit from developing and evaluating more programming to support athletes through the retirement transition.
Natriuretic peptides and endothelin-1 in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.

Abstract:Off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is an alternative to conventional CABG using cardiopulmonary bypass. Off-pump technique reduces the complications of CABG performed with extracorporeal circulatory assistance (Lancey et al. 2000; Mack et al. 2004a,b). The object of this study was to compare peri- and postoperative time courses of vasoactive peptides - atrial natriuretic poptide (ANP), brain natriuretic poptide (BNP) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) in off-pump versus on-pump CABG. 22 patients, who underwent on-pump (group A, n = 11) or off-pump CABG (group B, n = 11) were studied. The peri- and postoperative time courses of plasma ANP and BNP were similar in both groups. A statistically significant difference between ET-1 plasma level 2 h after surgery in the group A and ET-1 plasma level 2 h after surgery in the group B (2.46 + or - 1.14 pg/ml/Ht versus 0.74 + or - 0.09 pg/ml/Ht, p < 0.0001) was found. Different CABG techniques were not associated with significant changes in peri- and postoperative plasma ANP and BNP. By contrast, plasma ET-1 significantly rose in the group A 2 h after surgery, indicating endothelial damage.

Abstract:Abstract The transition into elite-level sport can expose young athletes to risk factors for mental ill-health, including increased performance expectations, stressors associated with becoming increasingly public figures, and changes in lifestyle demands, such as diet, training loads and sleep. Successful integration into elite-level sport requires athletes to quickly adapt to these newfound challenges and the norms and culture of the new sport setting, while developing relationships with teammates, coaches, and support staff. Despite these demands, the mental health experiences of athletes transitioning into elite-level sport have been largely neglected in sport psychology literature. This is reflected in the dearth of programs for supporting mental health during this career phase, particularly relative to retirement transition programs. In this article, we offer a preliminary framework for supporting athletes’ mental health during the transition into elite-level sport. This framework is based on holistic, developmental, and ecological perspectives. Our framework outlines a range of recommendations for promoting mental health and preventing mental ill-health, including individual-level, relational, sport-level, and sociocultural-level strategies. Key recommendations include preparing athletes for the challenges they are likely to face throughout their athletic careers, highlighting athletes’ competence earlier in their careers, developing supportive relationships in the sport setting, and fostering psychologically safe sporting cultures. Supporting mental health from earlier in the athletic career is likely to promote athletes’ overall wellbeing, support enjoyment and retention in sport, and encourage help-seeking.

Abstract:Introduction: The aim of this investigation was to determine which factors were associated with symptoms of sleep and mental health disorders in former athletes. Methods: Former athletes (N = 173, 50% women) who retired from any competition level within the last 20 years participated in an online survey. The survey consisted of the Athlete Sleep Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ), Personal Wellbeing Index-Adult (PWI-A), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-Revised (CESD-R), and Generalised Anxiety Disorder Assessment (GAD-7). Results: Binary logistic regressions revealed that both age (OR = 0.95 [95% CI:0.92, 0.99], p = 0.007) and gender (OR = 2.28 [95% CI:1.09, 4.79], p = 0.029) were associated with anxiety, with women and younger ex-athletes presenting greater risk of anxiety symptoms. Higher body mass was associated with an increased risk for sleep difficulty (OR = 1.13 [95% CI:1.03, 1.23], p = 0.008), sleep disordered breathing (OR = 1.20 [95% CI:1.10, 1.30], p < 0.001), and compromised wellbeing (OR = 0.89 [95% CI:0.83, 0.96], p = 0.001). Athletes who subjectively placed a lower priority on sport while competing presented greater risk of sleep disordered breathing (OR = 2.00[95% CI:1.05, 3.80], p = 0.035). No associations between recency retirement and any outcome measures were observed. Discussion: Findings suggest potential predictive factors for difficulty transitioning out of sport. Future longitudinal research should consider the interplay between sport re-engagement and the incidence and chronicity of sleep and mental health disorders.

Abstract:Through examination of semi-structured interviews from former National Collegiate Athletic Association athletes (n = 150), this study used Schlossberg's [1981. Interdependence analysis and the 3 + 1Cs in the coach–athlete relationship. In S. Jowett, & D. Lavallee (Eds.), Social psychology in sport (pp. 15–27). Human Kinetics] 3C's model to explore the influence of the coach, on athlete post-college transitions. Athletes found the transition difficult, experiencing feelings of identity loss and depression, while 39% reported difficulty and ease in their transition out of sport. The remaining 41% of athletes reported a smooth transition because they established identities outside of athletics and prepared for the ending of their athletic careers. Athletes voicing strong interpersonal support systems, mainly family and coaches, more successfully navigated their post-college transition than their peers who lacked interpersonal support. Finally, former athletes who noted positive athlete-coach relationships demonstrating 3Cs of commitment, closeness, and complementarity, found transition out of sport to be smooth.
The Impact of Athletic Identity, Psychological Flexibility, and Value Consistent Living on the Mental Health and Well-Being of Retired Elite Rugby Players

Abstract:Retirement from sport is widely accepted as an important period of change for athletes. Existing studies have focused on investigating the mental health and well-being of current players, while limited research has explored the impact of retirement on elite rugby players. The present study aimed to examine how athletic identity, psychological flexibility, and valued living impact subjective well-being and psychological distress in retired elite rugby players. A cross-sectional, between-subject, factorial design was adopted. Seventy-seven retired elite rugby players were recruited to the Tackling Next Steps project and completed an online survey between March 2021 and December 2021. Suboptimal levels of subjective well-being were reported by 64% of retired players, and 43% reported clinical levels of distress. Valued living and psychological flexibility were shown to significantly predict subjective well-being. The results show that promoting psychological flexibility and valued living may have positive effects on subjective well-being in retired rugby players.

Factorial Invariance in a Repeated Measures Design: An Application to the Study of Person-Organization Fit

Abstract:An important methodological concern of any research based on a person-environment (P-E) fit approach is the operationalization of the fit, which imposes some measurement requirements that are rarely empirically tested with statistical methods. Among them, the assessment of the P and E components along commensurate dimensions is possibly the most cited one. This paper proposes to test the equivalence across the P and E measures by analyzing the measurement invariance of a multi-group confirmatory factor analysis model. From a methodological point of view, the distinct aspect of this approach within the context of P-E fit research is that measurement invariance is assessed in a repeated measures design. An example illustrating the procedure in a person-organization (P-O) fit dataset is provided. Measurement invariance was tested at five different hierarchical levels: (1) configural, (2) first-order factor loadings, (3) second-order factor loadings, (4) residual variances of observed variables, and (5) disturbances of first-order factors. The results supported the measurement invariance across the P and O measures at the third level. The implications of these findings for P-E fit studies are discussed. Un importante aspecto metodológico de las investigaciones basadas en el enfoque del ajuste persona-ambiente (P-A) se refiere a la operacionalización del ajuste P-A, que impone una serie de supuestos que raramente se evalúan utilizando métodos estadísticos. Entre ellos, la evaluación de los componentes P y A en dimensiones conmensurables o equivalentes, es posiblemente uno de los más citados. En este artículo se propone que la equivalencia entre las medidas de P y A puede evaluarse mediante el análisis de la invarianza factorial de un modelo de análisis factorial confirmatorio multi-grupo. Desde un punto de vista metodológico, la aportación del enfoque propuesto a la investigación del ajuste P-A es que la invarianza en la medida se evalúa en un diseño de medidas repetidas. El artículo también presenta un ejemplo que ilustra el procedimiento propuesto con datos para una medida de ajuste persona-organización (P-O). La invarianza en la medida se evalúa en cinco niveles jerárquicos: (1) configural, (2) saturaciones de primer orden, (3) saturaciones de segundo orden, (4) varianzas error de las variables observadas y (5) errores típicos asociados a los factores de primer orden. Los resultados dan apoyo a la invarianza factorial en las medidas de P y O en el tercer nivel. Por último, se discuten las implicaciones del enfoque propuesto para los estudios de ajuste P-A.
The Impact of Traumatism on the Professional Aging: The Case of Elite Sports

Abstract:The article outlines the problem of traumatism, which is analyzed from the viewpoint of the socio-medical aspect. The peculiarities of the impact of traumatism on the professional sports career were revealed through the analysis of the elite athletes’ biographies (n = 296 respondents). The research was carried out applying the qualitative research design (biographical research). The assessment of life narratives of high-performance athletes performing on the world arena was carried out applying the criterion of traumatism and its impact on the athletes’ lives ( the athletes’ biographies are accessible through open-source Internet resources). The data obtained in the research framework revealed the possible trajectories of the impact of traumatism on the course of the professional sporting career: the process of career stagnation, professional success, the process of completion/ termination of a sporting career. The career stagnation was observed among all the respondents, which is predetermined by the rehabilitation process they had to go through. Based on the data obtained in the research framework, the conclusion can be drawn that reintegration into elite sports is primarily based on the resource potential of the athlete: the resources of the family/ the loved ones, the athlete’s own capacity, as well as the state support provision. The possible trajectories of professional aging were identified, namely, high resource capacity, the reduction/loss of resource capacity (disability), zeroing of resource capacity (lethal outcome). In addition, the data showed that the potential trajectory for the reintegration was usually identified within the two directions: firstly, sports and physical culture; secondly, other professional spheres. It should also be highlighted that professional aging puts forward the issues related to social security of high-performance athletes worldwide. Therefore, the issue of reviewing the reintegration criteria into the education system or professional and labour market upon the completion of the sporting career is of highest topicality provided that it would positively impact both the positive capacity of the population group and the prestige of high-performance sports worldwide. The research results allow drawing the conclusion that the accumulated resources in the course of building and implementing a professional sports career have a positive impact on the duration of the professional age of a representative of elite sports, in its turn, providing the possibility to easily adjust to the new life upon the completion of the sports career.
Health Consequences of an Elite Sporting Career: Long-Term Detriment or Long-Term Gain? A Meta-Analysis of 165,000 Former Athletes

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Exercise is widely accepted to improve health, reducing the risk of premature mortality, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer. However, several epidemiological studies suggest that the exercise-longevity relationship may be ‘J’ shaped; with elite athlete’s likely training above these intensity and volume thresholds. Therefore, the aim of this meta-analysis was to examine this relationship in former elite athletes. Methods 38,047 English language articles were retrieved from Web of Science, PubMed and SportDiscus databases published after 1970, of which 44 and 24 were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis, respectively. Athletes were split into three groups depending on primary sport: Endurance (END), Mixed/Team, or power (POW). Standard mortality ratio’s (SMR) and standard proportionate mortality ratio (SPMR) were obtained, or calculated, and combined for the meta-analysis. Results Athletes lived significantly longer than the general population (male SMR 0.69 [95% CI 0.61–0.78]; female SMR 0.51 [95% CI 0.40–0.65]; both p < 0.01). There was no survival benefit for male POW athletes compared to the general population (SMR 1.04 [95% CI 0.91–1.12]). Although male athlete’s CVD (SMR 0.73 [95% CI 0.62–0.85]) and cancer mortality (SMR 0.75 [95% CI 0.63–0.89]), were significantly reduced compared to the general population, there was no risk-reduction for POW athletes CVD mortality (SMR 1.10 [0.86–1.40]) or END athletes cancer mortality (SMR 0.73 [0.50–1.07]). There was insufficient data to calculate female sport-specific SMR’s. Discussion Overall, athletes live longer and have a reduced incidence of both CVD and cancer mortality compared to the general population, refuting the ‘J’ shape hypothesis. However, different health risks may be apparent according to sports classification, and between sexes, warranting further investigation. Cumulative Sport-Related Injuries and Longer Term Impact in Retired Male Elite- and Amateur-Level Rugby Code Athletes and Non-contact Athletes: A Retrospective Study

Abstract:Abstract Background Rugby union and rugby league are popular team contact sports, but they bring a high risk of injury. Although previous studies have reported injury occurrence across one or several seasons, none have explored the total number of injuries sustained across an entire career. As the first to do so, the aim of this study was to report on cumulative injuries and their perceived long-term impact in retired rugby code athletes compared to athletes from non-contact sports. Methods One hundred and eighty-nine former rugby code athletes (rugby union n = 145; rugby league n = 44) and 65 former non-contact athletes were recruited to the UK Rugby Health Project between September 2016 and December 2018. Details on sports participation, sports injuries and concussion history, sports injury-related surgeries, and previous and current health were obtained from a validated, online self-report questionnaire. Results Former elite rugby code athletes ( n = 83) reported more total injuries per player (median 39, IQR 35) than former amateur rugby code athletes ( n = 106; median 23, IQR 30; p = 0.014) and non-contact sports athletes ( n = 65; median 7.5, IQR 15; p < 0.001). Concussion was the most frequently reported injury for the elite and amateur rugby code groups, followed by upper/lower back and knee ligament injuries. These injuries also presented with the highest recurrence. Rugby code groups reported a higher continued impact of previous concussion, neck injuries, shoulder dislocation, ACL tears, and knee ligament injuries ( p = 0.003–0.045). The reported prevalence of osteoarthritis was more than twofold greater in the elite rugby code group than in non-contact athletes (51% v 22%, p < 0.001). The prevalence of back pain and/or severe and regular joint pain was high across all groups (47–80%), particularly the elite rugby code group. The total number of joint injuries and sport injury-related surgeries was higher in those who reported current osteoarthritis and current severe and regular joint pain ( p < 0.001– p = 0.028). Conclusion Across multiple injury types, past participation in rugby union and rugby league, particularly at elite level, is associated with a high cumulative injury load and a continued impact of previous injuries post-retirement. Given the high number of reported concussions (and their recurrence) and associations between previous injuries during a player’s career and current musculoskeletal conditions, efforts should be prioritized to reduce the occurrence and recurrence of injuries in rugby codes at all levels of the sport. Strategies should also be developed for supporting the specific physical health needs of rugby code athletes post-retirement.

End on a positive note: an exploration of flourishing, identity, and career confidence in professional Australian footballers transitioning out of football

Abstract:This study explored professional male Australian rules football players leaving the Australian Football League (AFL), either from retirement or from deselected from their team. Identified athletes (n = 425) transitioning from the AFL competition from years 2019 to 2021 were invited to participate in an anonymous online survey with 60% completing the survey. Using scaled-response questions, responses were compared between groups across a number of areas including their experience of leaving, athlete identity, the influence of sport in their daily life, psychological flourishing, financial confidence, social relationships, and future career preparations. Results showed deselected players (n = 152), compared to retired players (n = 56), reported shorter career spans, and poorer perception of their club's handling of the transition process (p < 0.001). Compared to retired players, deselected players reported stronger identity attachment to sport, less confidence in their financial capabilities, and career outside football (all p < 0.05). Conversely retired players, compared to deselected players, showed stronger psychological flourishing. Correlations showed that retired players were more confidence in their finances, reported greater psychological flourishing, and lower attachment to an athletic identity (all p ≤ 0.05). The results of this study suggest that as deselected players expressed poorer perception of club's handling of the transition process the role of AFL club staff could improve the transition process in in preparation for life outside of professional sport.

Fighting for Olympic dreams and life beyond: Olympian judokas on striving for glory and tackling post-athletic challenges

Abstract:Objectives: This study explores the experiences of Olympian judokas, examining both their pursuit of excellence to compete at the Olympics and their subsequent transition out of judo. The aim is to offer empirical evidence regarding the challenges they face in realizing their Olympic dreams, and to shed light on the transitional challenges, available resources, and needs they face as they move toward post-athletic lives. Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with eight Olympian judokas: five males and three females, all of whom have retired from competitive judo. These participants are from Portugal (n = 1), Republic of Korea (n = 2), and the United Kingdom (n = 5). We employed thematic analysis, which led to the identification of five main themes: (a) From Dreams to Olympic Reality, (b) Facing the Void: Loss of Goals and Identity, (c) The Crucial Role of Social Support, (d) Dual Aspects of Pre-Retirement Planning, and (e) The Double Edge of Organizational Support. Findings: The findings highlight the significant challenges faced by Olympian judokas, including goal and identity loss post-retirement, and the need for comprehensive and accessible organizational support, particularly psychological assistance, to assist in their transition to post-athletic life. Implications: The findings not only enhance our understanding of judokas' experiences during transition but also offer insights that could guide the development of tailored support programs. It is critical for sport governing bodies and practitioners to apply these insights in creating comprehensive and easily accessible support systems, which will ensure a smoother transition to post-athletic life for high-performance athletes.

Abstract:Sporting events for older adults are proliferating in both popularity and participation numbers, mirroring the growth that is occurring globally with an aging population. Preliminary evidence indicates that older athletes have a tendency to compare themselves (in terms of their performance, participation, and aging) to inactive older adults deemed "worse-off." Our aim was to examine the stories and experiences of older, male Masters athletes, not only in terms of their own lives and in relation to others but also in the broader context of current (neoliberal) policies that promote sport across the lifespan. We use social comparison theory to interpret our findings and highlight the strengths and limitations of social comparison as a psychological strategy. For this study, 17 male competitive athletes (age range from 70 to 90 years) who participated in either the 2013 or 2017 World Masters Games were interviewed as part of a larger project on the meaning of sport in their lives. Seven different sports were represented, and participants hailed from multiple countries. Within the interpretive paradigm, we used qualitative methods to interview each participant, analyze individual transcripts, and develop common themes across the data set to address the aforementioned aims. Our two major themes were, Sport as social comparison: "It's the competitive nature" and Downward comparisons. A number of participants commented on the nature of sport, and competitive sport in particular, as being important to their motivation to train and prepare. Within the theme of Downward comparisons, we established two categories: Resisting loss and Assigning blame. While downward comparisons were used by our participants to separate themselves from other seniors of the same age, thereby bolstering their sense of self, participants also tied those comparisons to neoliberal notions of individual and moral responsibility for health. Participants believed that compromised health was due to individual negligence and bad decisions, with little reference to uncontrollable factors, such as non-modifiable risk factors for disease, disability, and/or socioeconomic status, which could be affecting people's lives or decisions. Ultimately, our findings show that the useful psychological strategy of social comparison for maintaining a positive sense of self and performance may also have some negative individual and societal consequences.
Experiences of rehabilitation in young elite athletes: an interview study

Abstract:Even though injuries are common in elite youth sports, rehabilitation experiences are limited explored in young athletes. This study explored rehabilitation experiences in athletes with a previous injury studying at sports high schools. Twenty-six (14/12 females/males) young elite athletes (age 15–19 years) from 11 individual/team sports were interviewed in focus groups about the rehabilitation experiences following a sports injury. Data were analysed using content analysis. The results led to four main categories identified: ‘High-quality rehabilitation’, ‘Lack of communication between healthcare and coach’, ‘Various consequences of injury’ and ‘No clear path to accessing rehabilitation’. The athletes valued that the healthcare providers had high expertise, were clear and signalled secureness and confidence. It was also important to receive help with rehabilitation as rapidly as possible. The athletes perceived that they felt responsible for providing information regarding rehabilitation progression between healthcare providers and their coach. It was also challenging not to be able to participate in training and competition while injured — causing a sense of frustration and fear of falling behind their peer athletes in terms of development and performance. The athletes described that no well-defined medical teams at the sports high schools were available— instead medical help was offered in several other ways. Based on our findings, the collaboration and communication between the healthcare providers and coaches need to be improved, addressing the rehabilitation content, progress and access to rehabilitation. Through these actions, the rehabilitation process will be more adjusted to the needs of young elite athletes.
Adolescents' experience with sports-related pain and injury: A systematic review of qualitative research

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this review is to synthesise qualitative studies examining adolescents' experience with pain and injury arising from sports participation. Methods: This review was registered on Open Science Framework prior to data extraction. A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and SPORTDiscus was conducted. Studies were appraised using the CASP (critical appraisal skills programme) checklist. Data was synthesised using a meta aggregation. Study selection criteria: Inclusion criteria included studies related to adolescents aged 14-19yrs with sports related pain/injury, employed a qualitative design, full text publications in English. Results: Sixteen studies of 216 participants were included. Studies investigated severe knee injuries, concussion, or other musculoskeletal injuries. Synthesised findings show that, regardless of injury type, adolescents experience a mix of positive (motivation to rehab and return to sport, optimism) and negative emotions (fear of re-injury, isolation, depressive responses) throughout recovery. Common coping strategies were to ignore symptoms, modify activity levels, or seek support. Conclusion: Sports-related pain and injury has a multifaceted effect on the adolescent athlete. There is a pervasive fear of re-injury and social isolation, but the desire to return to sports is facilitated through motivation and support. Peer motivation effects the willingness of the adolescent to persist with rehabilitation.
Restored Life of Elite Athletes after Spinal Cord Injury

Abstract:Spinal cord injury (SCI) affects every aspect of human life: medical, psychological, social, material. People with SCI face a variety of secondary conditions (e.g., chronic pain, urinary tract infections, cognitive impairment) that place a significant emotional burden, resulting in an increased risk of depression and reduced quality of life. The purpose of this study was to better understand the coping strategies and to identify factors that promote or hinder the successful adjustment of elite athletes after SCI. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight top athletes after spinal cord injury. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and then thematically analyzed using MAXQDA software. Thematic analysis identified the following categories: coping, athletic identity, and adjustment. The results of the study indicate that loss of functional ability does not cause loss of athlete identity. Elite athletes live a life consistent with this identity, attempting to maintain it despite the loss of physical fitness. Involvement in sports provides meaning and is a positive factor in the process of disability acceptance, which is essential in the process of adjustment to injury and also provides group belonging.

Abstract:Emerging research supports that some former collegiate athletes (FCAs) can become physically inactive after retiring from sport, which can exacerbate unfavorable changes in long-term health. While researchers have addressed transitional difficulties FCAs may experience after retiring, little empirical evidence exists on how to promote healthy post-sport physical activity (PA) levels for those who are insufficiently active. Because of FCAs' past sports training, considering their opinions for effective PA program components may be beneficial in early stages of behavioral intervention development. As such, 17 insufficiently active former National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I athletes engaged in semi-structured interviews exploring their post-sport PA experiences and perceptions of effective program characteristics. Using Consensual Qualitative Research procedures, five domains were constructed. Three domains were discussed in a previous article; this paper overviews the remaining two, which describe participants' opinions of what would effectively promote PA in their population: (a) a desire for an 'athletics-lite' atmosphere in an FCA-targeted intervention, and (b) using technology to positively engage former athletes in their PA transition. While participants believed an athletics-based program where they are provided feedback and individualized workouts would be effective in maintaining PA, this may indicate underdeveloped autonomy in some FCAs regarding PA maintenance post-sport. Initially utilizing college sports personnel in a program may aid FCAs at risk of inactivity in transferring skills used in sport to independent PA maintenance after retiring. Further, the introduction and use of technology may help facilitate self-monitoring of progress, social support, and individualization when external resources are unavailable. Lay summary: Seventeen, inactive former college athletes (FCAs) were interviewed to understand enablers for promoting physical activity (PA) in their population. Utilizing sport/exercise personnel to help FCAs become more autonomous in their behavior and promoting self-monitoring through technology may help those in this population who struggle to maintain PA post-sport.

Abstract:Objective: Concern exists about possible problems with later-in-life brain health, such as cognitive impairment, mental health problems and neurological diseases, in former athletes. We examined the future risk for adverse health effects associated with sport-related concussion, or exposure to repetitive head impacts, in former athletes. Design: Systematic review. Data sources: Search of MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, CINAHL Plus and SPORTDiscus in October 2019 and updated in March 2022. Eligibility criteria: Studies measuring future risk (cohort studies) or approximating that risk (case-control studies). Results: Ten studies of former amateur athletes and 18 studies of former professional athletes were included. No postmortem neuropathology studies or neuroimaging studies met criteria for inclusion. Depression was examined in five studies in former amateur athletes, none identifying an increased risk. Nine studies examined suicidality or suicide as a manner of death, and none found an association with increased risk. Some studies comparing professional athletes with the general population reported associations between sports participation and dementia or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) as a cause of death. Most did not control for potential confounding factors (eg, genetic, demographic, health-related or environmental), were ecological in design and had high risk of bias. Conclusion: Evidence does not support an increased risk of mental health or neurological diseases in former amateur athletes with exposure to repetitive head impacts. Some studies in former professional athletes suggest an increased risk of neurological disorders such as ALS and dementia; these findings need to be confirmed in higher quality studies with better control of confounding factors.
