Abstract:Pillar[n]arenes possess highly symmetrical and rigid pillar-shaped architecture with π-electron rich cavity that afford their reliable host-guest recognition interactions towards matched guests. In this work, a novel amphiphilic pillar[5]arene (P5A-C10-2NH2) was designed, synthesized and employed as the stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography. To date, they have not been reported in the field of chromatography. The P5A-C10-2NH2 capillary column (10 m × 0.25 mm i.d.) was prepared by static coating method. Its capillary column exhibited moderate polarity and column efficiency of 2265 plates/m determined by naphthalene at 120°C. As evidenced, the P5A-C10-2NH2 column achieved advantageous separation performance for a mixture of 24 analytes of diverse types and exhibited different chromatographic selectivity from two pillar[5]arene derivatives columns and commercial HP-35 column with 35%-phenyl-methylpolysiloxane. Moreover, the P5A-C10-2NH2 column baseline resolved more than a dozen positional and cis-trans isomers. Furthermore, the separation mechanism of P5A-C10-2NH2 column was discussed by quantum chemical calculations. In addition, the P5A-C10-2NH2 column had high thermal stability and excellent separation repeatability 0.01%-0.04% for run-to-run, 0.03%-0.17% for day-to-day and 3.2%-3.9% for column-to-column. The special amphiphilic structure and high resolution for various analytes reveal the good potential of pillararenes as a new class of stationary phases for chromatographic analyses. Moreover, the TPG column achieved improved thermal stability over the GIL column and excellent repeatability.

Abstract:This work reports the first example of employing ester‐functionalized pillar[5]arene (P5A‐C10‐OAc) stationary phase for gas chromatography (GC) separations. The as‐fabricated P5A‐C10‐OAc column achieved improved column efficiency of 4270 plates/m and separation performance in contrast to the P5A‐C10‐Br column. The P5A‐C10‐OAc column showed good separation performance for a wide range of analytes such as alkanes, bromoalkanes, ketones, fatty acid methyl esters, aldehydes, alcohols, halobenzenes, anilines, phenols, naphthalenes, and showed sharp and symmetrical peak shapes for analytes that are liable to peak‐tailing in GC analysis. As testified by the challenging isomer mixtures (bromonitrobenzene, chloronitrobenzene, bromobenzaldehyde, chlorobenzaldehyde, nitrobenzaldehyde), the P5A‐C10‐OAc column exhibited comprehensively higher separation capability than the P5A‐C10‐Br, P5A‐C10 and commercial HP‐35 columns. This work demonstrates the great potential of pillararene‐based stationary phases as a new type of stationary phases for GC separations.

Abstract:Here we report the first example of employing hydroxyl-functionalized pillar[5]arene (P5A-C10-OH) as stationary phase for capillary gas chromatographic (GC) separations. The statically coated P5A-C10-OH capillary column possessed moderate polarity and column efficiency of 3233 plates m-1 determined by n-dodecane. As a result, the P5A-C10-OH column exhibited high-resolution capability for the mixture of 17 analytes from apolar to polar nature. Importantly, it exhibited advantageous performance for high resolution of the challenging isomers of bromonitrobenzene, chloroaniline, bromoaniline, iodoaniline and dimethylaniline with good peak shapes over the P5A-C10 and commercial HP-35 columns. In addition, eight cis-/trans-isomers with diverse types were baseline separated on the P5A-C10-OH column. And the application of detecting isomeric impurities in real samples gave strong evidence of its potential and feasibility for the viable GC analysis.

Abstract:Pillar[n]arenes (P[n]A, n = 5-10) have attracted much attention because of their highly symmetric pillar-shaped architecture with π-electron rich cavity. Nevertheless, the use of ionic liquid functionalized P[n]A in chromatography has not been reported up to data. This work reports the investigation of the imidazolium ionic liquids functionalized pillar[6]arene (P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2]) as the stationary phase for gas chromatography (GC). The statically coated P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2] column (0.25 mm i.d.) showed moderate polarity and high column efficiency of 4733 plates/m determined by n-dodecane at 120 °C (k = 2.29). Owing to its unique amphiphilic conformation, the P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2] showed good column inertness and resolving capability for a wide range of analytes and isomers. Particularly, the P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2] column exhibited distinctly advantageous performance for the challenging isomers of halogenated benzenes, benzaldehydes, phenols and anilines over the common commercial columns, namely 5% phenyl methyl polysiloxane (HP-5) and 35% phenyl methyl polysiloxane (HP-35). In addition, it exhibited good column repeatability and reproducibility with RSD values on the retention times less than 0.05% for run-to-run, 0.38% for day-to-day and 2.94% for column-to-column, respectively. This work demonstrates the promising future of ionic liquid P[n]A stationary phases for chromatographic separations.

Abstract:Canadian Journal of Chemistry, Ahead of Print. Herein, we synthesized and used a novel pillar[5]arene with two functionalizable rims (AP5A-C10-OAc) as stationary phase in gas chromatography (GC). The AP5A-C10-OAc column (0.25 mm, i.d.) showed a high column efficiency of 4107 plates/m and medium polarity. The AP5A-C10-OAc stationary phase possesses unique amphiphilic structure, including a π-electron rich cavity and two functionalized arms composed of five nonpolar alkyl chains and five polar ester chains, and showed good separation performance for diverse types of analytes and isomers (apolar/polar, aliphatic/aromatic). Particularly, the AP5A-C10-OAc phase showed high selectivity for the challenging isomers of chloronitrobenzenes, bromonitrobenzenes, benzenediols, and iodoanilines with distinct advantages if compared with the commercial polysiloxane column.

Abstract:This work presents the first example of the utilization of polar ester group functionalized pillar[6]arene (P6A-C10-OAc) as a stationary phase for capillary gas chromatographic (GC) separations. The statically coated P6A-C10-OAc column showed a high column efficiency of 5393 plates/m and moderate polar nature. Its resolving capability and retention behaviors were investigated for a mixture of 20 analytes and more than a dozen isomers from apolar to polar in nature. As evidenced, the P6A-C10-OAc column achieved high-resolution separations of all the analytes and good inertness. Importantly, it exhibited distinctly advantageous performance for high resolution of the challenging isomers of xylenes, diethylbenzenes, ethyltoluenes, and halobenzenes over the commercial HP-5 (5% phenyl dimethyl polysiloxane), HP-35 (25% phenyl dimethyl polysiloxane), and PEG-20M (polyethylene glycol) columns.

Abstract:The separation of aromatic isomers, in particular xylene isomers, represents a big issue in chemical and petroleum industries, owing to their similar molecular sizes and boiling points. In this work, the investigation ofpillar[6]arene derivative modified by long alkyl chains (P6A-C10) as a stationary phase for high-resolution gas chromatographic (GC) separations of xylene isomers is presented. Pillar[n]arenes are a new class of macrocyclic hosts that can accommodate specific guests due to their highly symmetrical and rigid pillar architectures with π -electron rich cavities. The P6A-C10 column showed high-resolution performance towards xylene isomers, with peculiar advantages if compared with the commercial HP-5, HP-35, DB-17, and PEG-20Mcolumns.A quantum chemistry calculation has been performed, showing a difference in non-covalent interactions with the P6A-C10 pillar framework, which leads to specific selectivity for xylene isomers.Furthermore, the P6A-C10 column exhibited good repeatability.

Abstract:To expand the application of pillararene in chromatographic separation, we designed and fabricated a pillar[5]quinone‐amine polymer coated silica through quinone‐amine reaction by facile one‐pot synthesis method, which was applied as a stationary phase for high‐performance liquid chromatography. Separation of hydrophobic compounds, hydrophilic compounds, halogenated aromatic compounds, and 11 aromatic positional isomers was achieved successfully in this stationary phase. Reverse‐phase separation mode and hydrophilic‐interaction separation mode were proved to exist, indicating the potential application of the mix‐mode stationary phase. Studies of chromatographic retention behavior and molecular simulation showed that multiple interactions might play an important role in the separation process, including hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen‐bonding interaction, aromatic π‐π interaction, electron donor‐acceptor interaction, and host‐guest interaction. Column repeatability and stability were tested, which showed relative standard deviations of retention time less than 0.2% for continuous 11 injections, and the durability relative standard deviations of retention time were less than 0.91% after 90 days. This novel design strategy would broaden the application of pillararene‐based covalent organic polymer in chromatography and separation science.

Abstract:Experiments were conducted in rats on the immunogenicity of 500 T. spiralis larvae subjected to roentgen irradiation at doses varying from 0 to 20,000 r before injection tn the rats. One month later the rats were challenged with 5000 nonirradiated larvae, and 2 months later the number of larvae in muscle were determined. The number recovered was found to increase linearly with the radiation dose, between 8000 and 20,000 r, applied to the larvae used for immunization. This indicates a progressive decline in immunogenicity with increasing radiation dosage in this range. However, larvae exposed to 8000 or 12,000 r were more potent immunologically than nonirradiated larvae. In rats which received only an immunizing inoculation of larvae, fewer larvae were found in muscle with irradiated than nonirradiated larvae, indicating that radiation limited the reproductive capacity of the worms. Abstract:Monoclonal immunoglobulins (M Igl) were detected in the serum of 10 of 20 patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (prim. SS), by using high resolution electrophoretic technique combined with immunofixation. The finding of three free lambda chains and two IgG lambda suggests that the lambda-expressing B-clones are involved in this process, but the class distribution is different from one series to another, and from one country to another. The prim. SS patients with multiogran disease have the higher incidence of M Igl.

Abstract:In this work, a series of chiral phenethylamine synergistic tricarboxylic acid modified ,B-cyclodextrin bonded stationary phase for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were synthesized via a sim-ple one-pot synthesis approach. Various racemates (aryl alcohols, flavanones, triazoles, benzoin, etc. ) were well separated on the tricarboxylic acid modified chiral stationary phases in both normal and reversed modes with good reproducibility and stability, and the influence of mobile phase composition on reso-lution (Rs) were deeply investigated. The RSD values of Rs for repeatability and column-to-column were below 1.28% and 3.05%, respectively. Systematic derivation of an Australian standard for Tall Man lettering to distinguish similar drug names.

Abstract:RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Confusion between similar drug names can cause harmful medication errors. Similar drug names can be visually differentiated using a typographical technique known as Tall Man lettering. While international conventions exist to derive Tall Man representation for drug names, there has been no national standard developed in Australia. This paper describes the derivation of a risk-based, standardized approach for use of Tall Man lettering in Australia, and known as National Tall Man Lettering. METHOD A three-stage approach was applied. An Australian list of similar drug names was systematically compiled from the literature and clinical error reports. Secondly, drug name pairs were prioritized using a risk matrix based on the likelihood of name confusion (a four-component score) vs. consensus ratings of the potential severity of the confusion by 31 expert reviewers. The mid-type Tall Man convention was then applied to derive the typography for the highest priority drug pair names. RESULTS Of 250 pairs of confusable Australian drug names, comprising 341 discrete names, 35 pairs were identified by the matrix as an 'extreme' risk if confused. The mid-type Tall Man convention was successfully applied to the majority of the prioritized drugs; some adaption of the convention was required. CONCLUSION This systematic process for identification of confusable drug names and associated risk, followed by application of a convention for Tall Man lettering, has produced a standard now endorsed for use in clinical settings in Australia. Periodic updating is recommended to accommodate new drug names and error reports.
Preparation and evaluation of two silica-based hydrophilic-hydrophobic and acid-base balanced stationary phases via in-situ surface polymerization

Abstract:Two new hydrophilic-hydrophobic and acid-base balanced liquid chromatographic stationary phases were obtained by using two long-chain monomers including undecylenic acid (UA) and oleic acid (OA) combined with short-chain 4-vinyl pyridine (Py) in-situ polymerized on silica microspheres surfaces, respectively. These two stationary phases can be used for reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) modes. Hydrophilic, hydrophobic, acidic and basic analytes can be separated on two new stationary phases in RPLC or HILIC mode. Compared with commercial hydrophobic C18 columns and other HILIC columns, two new stationary phases have excellent selectivity and separation performance in the separation of 9 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 10 aromatic acids, 10 anilines and 5 oxazolidinones, respectively. This novel polymer-functionalized silica design strategy has opened up new ideas for the future of mixed-mode stationary phases with multiple functions and specificity.

Abstract:A novel high performance liquid stationary phase was prepared by grafting poly amidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers to poly (styrene-divinyl benzene-glycidylmethacrylate) matrix in this work. Different generations of PAMAM dendrimers grafted to polymer matrices containing different glycidylmethacrylate amounts by reacting with epoxy groups in glycidylmethacrylate molecules. The synthesized PAMAM dendrimers and stationary phase were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, N2 adsorption/desorption, elemental analysis and thermo gravimetric analyzer. The proposed stationary phase was suitable for rapid separation of phenylene diamine isomers and aminobenzene. The separation mechanism of benzene rings attraction and amino repulsion was verified by retention behaviors of methylamine, phenylamine, phenylene diamine, naphthylamine and toluene. The reliability of the stationary phase was demonstrated by separation and determination of phenylene diamine isomers including m-phenylene diamine, o-phenylene diamine and p-phenylene diamine in hair dye precursors within 10min. Satisfactory resolution and short analysis time make the columns promising for determination of aniline compounds in various fields.
Highly Selective Separation of Isopropylbenzene and Α-Methylstyrene by Nonporous Adaptive Crystals of Perbromoethylated Pillararene Via Vapor- and Liquid-Phase Adsorptions

Abstract:Isopropylbenzene (IPB) and α-methylstyrene (AMS), two members of C9 aromatics, are important in both industrial production and laboratory research, but the separation of IPB/AMS mixtures is still a big challenge. Here, we provide a new strategy to separate IPB and AMS using nonporous adaptive crystals of four pillararenes, perethylated pillar[5]arene, perethylated pillar[6]arene, perbromoethylated pillar[5]arene, and perbromoethylated pillar[6]arene (BrP6). Among them, BrP6 selectively adsorbs IPB from an equal volume mixture of IPB and AMS with >95% purity for solid-vapor phase adsorption and >94% purity for solid-liquid phase adsorption, while the selectivities for the other three pillararenes are unsatisfactory. Single-crystal structural analyses combined with powder X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry experiments demonstrate that the selectivity arises from the different stabilities of guest-loaded BrP6 crystals. Moreover, the reversible transitions between guest-free and IPB-loaded structures indicate the preeminent recycling performance of BrP6 crystals.
Linear Positional Isomer Sorting in Nonporous Adaptive Crystals of a Pillar[5]arene.

Abstract:Here we show a new adsorptive separation approach using nonporous adaptive crystals of a pillar[5]arene. Desolvated perethylated pillar[5]arene crystals (EtP5α) with a nonporous character selectively adsorb 1-pentene (1-Pe) over its positional isomer 2-pentene (2-Pe), leading to a structural change from EtP5α to 1-Pe loaded structure (1-Pe@EtP5). The purity of 1-Pe reaches 98.7% in just one cycle and EtP5α can be reused without losing separation performance.

Abstract:Polymer monolithic stationary phases were prepared based on a cyclic anhydride as a reactive and tunable platform via ring-opening post-polymerization using primary amines; octadecylamine and benzylamine. The characterization techniques indicated the insertion of the functional groups into the original monoliths and confirmed the amidation reactions. The post-polymerization modification also improved the monolith's thermal and mechanical stability and induced significant improvement in their surface area. The stationary phases were synthesized inside small dimensions stainless-steel columns (2.1 mm i.d. × 50 mm length). The prepared columns before and after modifications have been tested for the separation of the alkylbenzene series and some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as model compounds. In all cases, the chromatographic performance in terms of the height equivalent to a theoretical plate on the functionalized monoliths was remarkably improved when compared with that on the unmodified monolith, which located between 9.59–39.49 μm and 4.08–31.50 μm using monoliths modified with octadecylamine and benzylamine, respectively. Under the same chromatographic conditions, the functionalization of monoliths with octadecylamine provided more hydrophobic interactions and enhanced the retention of alkylbenzenes, while the modification of monoliths with benzyl groups improved the separation and the retention of the PAHs through the strong π-π interactions. However, the post-modification polymerization with octadecylamine and benzylamine enhanced the separation efficiency of the prepared columns toward all studied compounds. The repeatability of the injections on the same column and the reproducibility of the prepared columns have been studied for some selected parameters and estimated in terms of percent relative standard deviation (%RSD) for some of the studied compounds. The repeatability of the prepared columns was ≤9.42% (n=5) based on run-to-run injections and ≤9.48% based on day-to-day injections for five successive days. The reproducibility levels, on the other side, were ≤20.95% for all studied parameters in all cases. To assess their performance for the analysis of real samples, the applicability of the prepared columns was examined for the separation of the active ingredients extracted from some commercial pharmaceutical formulations and for the separation of tea water extract constituents. The validation data show the suitability of the columns for practical use in the routine analysis of these samples.

Preparation of Polymer-Based Amino Acid Stationary Phase and Its Application for Mixed-Mode Chromatography

Abstract:Polymer microspheres have received attention because of their excellent properties. In this work, a polymer matrix zwitterionic amino acid stationary phase was prepared. Polyglycidyl methacrylate divinylbenzene (PGMA-DVB) microspheres was used as the matrix and successful modification with L-phenylalanine by ring-opening reaction of epoxy groups on the surface of PGMA-DVB microsphere matrix. The stationary phase was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectra, and elemental analysis. The phenylalanine-modified stationary phase was used in RPLC/HILIC mixed-mode chromatography for the separation of alkylbenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, nucleosides and nucleic acids and etc. as probes, respectively. The good spatial selectivity of the stationary phase was demonstrated by the separation of biphenyl isomers. The prepared stationary phase showed good stability in alkaline condition (pH = 10) and low swelling in organic solvent mobile phase. Meanwhile, the stationary phase also showed good performance in the separation of different vitamins (Rs > 5.3), and the separation and detection of PAHs in river water.

Abstract:Chromatographic stationary phases with molecular-shape selectivity are advantageous for the separation and analysis of geometric isomers. Herein, dehydroabietic acid is bonded on the surface of silica microspheres via 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane to form a monolayer dehydroabietic-acid stationary phase (Si-DOMM) with a racket-shaped structure. Various characterization techniques indicate that Si-DOMM is successfully prepared, and the separation performance of a Si-DOMM column is evaluated. The stationary phase has a low silanol activity and metal contamination and a high hydrophobicity and shape selectivity. The resolutions of lycopene, lutein, and capsaicin on the Si-DOMM column confirm that the stationary phase exhibits high shape selectivity. The elution order of n -alkyl benzene on the Si-DOMM column indicates its high hydrophobic selectivity and suggests that the separation is an enthalpy-driven process. Repeatability experiments reveal highly stable preparation processes of the stationary phase and column and indicate that the relative standard deviations of retention time, peak height, and peak area are less than 0.26%, 3.54%, and 3.48%, respectively. Density functional theory calculations using n -alkylbenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, amines, and phenols as model solutes provide an intuitive and quantitative description of the multiple retention mechanisms. The Si-DOMM stationary phase exhibits superior retention and high selectivity for these compounds via multiple interactions. The bonding phase of the monolayer dehydroabietic acid stationary phase with a racket-shaped structure has a unique affinity for benzene, strong shape selectivity, and good separation performance for geometrical isomers with different molecular shapes.
