Abstract:Good water-resistance is indispensable for flexible humidity sensors (FHS) in practical application. In this work, a water-durable FHS was facilely fabricated by depositing the composite film of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), graphene oxide (GO) and 3-glycidyloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (KH560) on a substrate of poly(ethylene terephthalate) silk screen modified with polydopamine. Specifically, CMC/KH560/GO exhibited crosslinking structure and formed covalent bonds with the substrate, and interdigitated electrodes were constructed by reducing GO in the composite film via laser-direct writing. As-prepared FHS of CMC/KH560/GO showed high sensitivity (impedance decrease from 107 Omega to 105 Omega between relative humidity of 20 % and 90 %), fast response (response/recovery time of 20 s/13 s), good sensing repeatability, good long-term stability and stable response under large bending deformation. Particularly, the sensor revealed little change in the humidity response curves after immersed in water for 30 min or in sweat for 5 min, indicating excellent water-durability. The FHS could facilely distinguish breathing modes, detect skin moisture and recognize slight finger movement (as small as 1 mm) and gestures in a non-contact way, suggesting potential applications in healthcare and non-contact human-machine interactions. This work could provide references for developing advanced FHS with waterdurability for wearable electronics.

Abstract:Fast development of flexible electronics has stimulated great interests in researches on high performance multi-functional flexible sensors. Herein, we report a flexible sensor based on the composite of polyimide (PI) aerogel and TiO2 nanoparticles with multiplex applications in humidity sensing, detection of water content in liquids and photocatalytic degradation. Specifically, PI aerogel with 3,3 ',4,4 '-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride and 4,4 '-diaminodiphenyl ether as the monomers was deposited with TiO2 nanoparticles, and then covered by reduced graphene oxide as top and bottom electrodes to fabricate a self-standing flexible capacitive humidity sensor (FCHS). The flexible sensor exhibited linear change in capacitance on a semi-logarithmic scale from similar to 10 pF to similar to 10000 pF between relative humidity of 11-98 %, showing ultrahigh sensitivity. Moreover, it showed excellent deformation stability (humidity response changed little under bending to similar to 180 degrees for 200 times), and successfully measured the respiration process and monitored tiny movement of fingertip in non-contact way. Further, the flexible sensor could detect water content (ppm level) in polar ethanol and non-polar diesel with good sensitivity. Particularly, the FCHS could photodegrade dyes (methyl orange, orange II, Sulforhodamine B) and diesel under ultraviolet illumination, demonstrating desirable feature of self-cleaning from contaminations. The work offers valuable references for designing multi-functional flexible opto/electronic devices.

Abstract:Integration of hydrophobic, breathable, and degradable properties with MXene‐impregnated paper and micro‐convex structures enhances sensing capability in the HBF sensor. In situ conformal chemical vapor deposition ensures hydrophobicity and breathability, enabling high sensitivity and rapid response in human movement detection. Waterproof design guarantees reliable performance in diverse conditions including high humidity, rain, and underwater environments. Highlighted with bio‐degradability, paper‐based flexible pressure sensors receive significant attention in the field of wearable devices for a sustainable future. However, it remains a challenge to possess considerable sensing performance in high humidity and underwater environments, because its structure rapidly breaks down after the hydrophilic cellulose absorbs water. In this study, a facile chemical vapor deposition method is employed to conformally coat a thin hydrophobic layer onto the cellulose fibers, resulting in an encapsulating paper with high moisture tolerance. The well‐maintained porous structure reserves the superior breathability of the paper. A micro‐convex‐structured sensor layer impregnated with MXene serves as the sensing layer. As a result, an all‐paper‐based pressure sensor with high moisture tolerance and breathability is fabricated. This sensor features a broad sensing range (0–60 kPa), acceptable sensitivities (39.58 kPa−1 (0–1.01 kPa), 11.95 kPa−1 (1.01–60 kPa)), a low detection limit of ≈2.8 Pa, response and recovery time (93 and 69 ms), reliable hydrophobic breathability, and excellent repeatability (10 000 cycles). Moreover, this sensor can be safely worn on human skin and can monitor physiological signals in real‐time in different environments (including air, humid environments, and even underwater), providing a reliable, economical, and environmentally friendly solution for wearable technology.

Abstract:Harmless and breathable flexible humidity sensor has important applications in continuous and real-time detection of human physiological activities. In this work, with hydrophobic poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane as both the template and substrate and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a structure regulator, polyaniline (PANI) was unilaterally deposited on a PVDF microporous membrane to facilely fabricate a single-sided integrated flexible humidity sensor (IFHS). Such IFHS is featured with unique micro/nano structure and good air permeability. Moreover, it exhibits good humidity sensing properties at room temperature including fast response, small hysteresis and stable response even under bending deformation. The flexible sensor could realize non-contact monitoring of human respiration and speaking activities. Unilateral deposition of PANI and good breathability of IFHS avoids direct contact between PANI and human skin, thus averting harms to human and minimizing the deterioration of humidity sensing properties of PANI layer. The simple method is universal to the preparation of single-sided, integrated, breathable, nontoxic and fast response wearable humidity sensors based on PANI and hydrophobic microporous polymer membranes, offering useful references for the construction of advanced flexible sensors.

Abstract:Incorporated biological materials into a flexible sensing platform, which possess the features of biocompatibility and a capability of humidity‐induced visual color changes, is of significant interest for environmental and health monitoring, anti‐counterfeiting, and stealth technologies. Here, it is reported on a transparent and flexible sensing device based on biocompatible, natural biomaterials silk fibroin (SF) films that display high humidity response, significant flexibility, and remarkable noncontact characteristics for detecting ambient and human health, such as exhaling, speech, and fingertip movement. Depending on the design of the bionic structure, the patterned SF films can be applied as a color humidity indicator with visual color changes, reversibility, and stability. Such versatility highlights the potential for applications in human activity detection, human–machine interface, anti‐counterfeiting, and optical humidity sensors.

Abstract:Flexible sensors (FSs) are the key components of intelligent equipment and wearable devices, thus attracting increasing re-search interests in recent years. However, the preparation of multifunctional FS with good degradability in natural environ-ment is still challenging. In this work, we fabricated a flexible multi-modal sensor that can detect multiple stimuli with only one device by spraying the mixture of carbon black (CB) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) on paper substrate. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) visualization indicated the CB particles absorbed on the surface of rGO, which then overlayered together constructing a hierarchical structure. Benefiting from this unique structure, the obtained FS was demonstrated to have good sensitivity for strain, humidity, temperature and pressure as well as multiple stimuli, and was used to monitor human respirations as well as body motions, such as finger and elbow bending and head nodding. Besides, the sensor can be easily degraded in water being free of electronic pollution, but it also can be reused after soaking-drying process implying its reliability. This degradable and multi-modal FS may find great potential in flexible electronics.

Abstract:The ever-increasing demand for flexible electronics has considerably stimulated the desire for high-performance, safe, and durable sensing materials. Preparation of flexible active films with biocompatibility and high performance remains a challenge because of the complexities of large-scale production and the use of toxic chemicals. Here we demonstrated flexible silk 3C2Tx MXene () biocomposite films with a three-dimensional (3D) cross-link structure, utilizing natural silk fibroin (SF) as a bridging agent to self-assembled two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanosheets into a continuous wave-shaped lamellar macrostructure. The material exhibited good biocompatibility in a cytotoxicity test, thereby reducing the risk when applied to the human body. The biocomposite film provides a biomimetic 3D cross-link structure, resulting in low elastic modulus (1.22 MPa), good sensitivity (25.5 kPa−1), fast response/recovery time (40/35 ms), subtle pressure detection of limit (9.8 Pa), and good stability (3500 cycles). In addition, this pressure sensor can be applied to human health monitoring, including pulse feeling analysis, acoustic sound, deglutition swallowing, and finger motion. The synthesis of the e biocomposite film offers a widely applicable material for developing safe and high-performance flexible electronics.

Abstract:Electroactive biomass materials based on chitosan (CS), cellulose, etc. have great potential for applications in non-contact switches, smart wearable devices, environmental monitoring, etc. However, due to low electroactivity and susceptibility to overhydration, it is necessary to add carbon materials, synthetic conductive polymers or metal oxides, etc. and introduce numerous chemical crosslinking, which makes them face the problems of poor filler-matrix dispersion, high preparation cost and environmental pollution. In this study, citrate-modified cellulose (EMC) was prepared and introduced into the CS matrix, and a multi network structure with hydrogen bonding, chemical crosslinking and ionic complexation crosslinking was constructed by adding chemical crosslinking and Cu 2+ ion complexation. Flexible conductive composite film (CS-EMC-Cu film) and paper (CS-EMC-Cu impregnated paper) were prepared. The results showed that the incorporation of Cu 2+ and EMC effectively improved the flexibility (elongation at break of 106%), water resistance and surface hydrophilicity of the films. The composite conductive film (conductivity of 0.277 S/m) has good wet-responsive deformation properties, can be used as a non-contact smart switch, and has good humidity (0.745 RH −1 ) and pressure sensing properties, but the durability still needs to be improved. The CS-EMC-Cu impregnated conductive paper (conductivity of 0.0737 S/m) has good flexibility (elongation at break of 7.9%) and water resistance, and is capable of lighting a light bulb. Its brightness is enhanced with humidity and has good wet response characteristics. This flexible conductive film and paper are prepared in an environmentally friendly way, which provides ideas for the preparation and design of biomass-based flexible sensors, and is also of great significance for the high value-added utilization of biomass materials.

Abstract:In recent years, flexible sensors have been reported in numerous applications; however, they still face challenges such as single response to stimulus signals and low sensitivity. We report a flexible sensor based on structurally adjustable nano-through-hole array films that have high responses to pressure, temperature, and humidity. Polypyrrole/polyurethane single-walled carbon nanotube films with different sizes of nano-through-hole array films are prepared using anodic aluminum oxide templates, and the relationship between their pore diameter and pore depth and the three sensing properties is discussed in depth using finite element simulation and other methods. The experimental results show that the nano-through-hole array film with a pore diameter of 440 nm and a pore depth of 6.9 μm has a higher specific surface area and stress-strain response speed. The pressure sensitivity of the sensor reaches up to 102.99 kPa−1 within 0.004–12 kPa; the temperature sensitivity reaches up to 0.72% °C−1 within 20–80 °C; the humidity sensitivity reaches up to 3.51% RH−1 within 20–80% RH; and the crosstalk between the three response signals is less than 5%. The sensor shows great potential in the application of human physiological signal monitoring.

Abstract:Huge electronic wastes motivated the flourishing of biodegradable electrically conductive cellulosic paper-based functional materials as flexible wearable devices. However, the relatively low sensitivity and unstable output in combination with poor wet strength under high moisture circumstances impeded the practical application. Herein, a superhydrophobic cellulosic paper with ultrahigh sensitivity was proposed by innovatively employing ionic sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as bridge to reinforce the interfacial interaction between carbon black (CB) and multilayer graphene (MG) and SiO2 nanoparticles as superhydrophobic layer. The resultant paper-based (PB) sensor displayed excellent strain sensing behaviors, wide working range (-1.0 %-1.0 %), ultrahigh sensitivity (gauge factor, GF = 70.2), and satisfied durability (>10,000 cycles). Moreover, the superhydrophobic surface offered well waterproof and self-cleaning properties, even stable running data without encapsulation under extremely high moisture conditions. Impressively, when the fabricated PB sensor was applied for electronic-skin (E-skin), the signal capture of spatial strain of E-skin upon bodily motion was breezily achieved. Thus, our work not only provides a new pathway for reinforcing the interfacial interaction of electrically conductive carbonaceous materials, but also promises a category of unprecedentedly superhydrophobic cellulosic paper-based strain sensors with ultra-sensitivity in human-machine interfaces field.

Abstract:In the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) society, there is a significant need for low-cost, high-performance flexible humidity sensors in wearable devices. However, commercially available humidity sensors lack flexibility or require expensive and complex fabrication methods, limiting their application and widespread use. We report a high-performance printed flexible humidity sensor using a cellulose nanofiber/carbon black (CNF/CB) composite. The cellulose nanofiber enables excellent dispersion of carbon black, which facilitates the ink preparation and printing process. At the same time, its hydrophilic and porous nature provides high sensitivity and fast response to humidity. Significant resistance changes of 120% were observed in the sensor at humidity ranging from 30% RH to 90% RH, with a fast response time of 10 s and a recovery time of 6 s. Furthermore, the developed sensor also exhibited high-performance uniformity, response stability, and flexibility. A simple humidity detection device was fabricated and successfully applied to monitor human respiration and noncontact fingertip moisture as a proof-of-concept.

Abstract:Flexible and multifunctional sensing materials have emerged as a new class of prospective components for various practical wearable applications. Here, a micro-nano hybrid-structured conductive film (HCF) incorporating 1D carbon fibers and 0D carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) into polydimethylsiloxane matrix, presents remarkable pressure-sensitivity and bioelectrical acquirability. The HCF sensor exhibits a superior sensitivity of 43.15 kPa(-1) over a broad pressure range from 2.5 Pa to 200 kPa, keeping a considerable sensitivity of 7.28 kPa(-1) up to 800 kPa. The devices are demonstrated in monitoring artery pulses, swallowing, acoustic vibrations, gestures and human body motions. Furthermore, benefiting from the exceptionally high conductivity and tailorability in different shape structures, the HCF could also function as stretchable dry electrodes, which can be conformal contact with skin for acquiring high-quality bioelectrical signals including electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyogram (EMG) and electrooculogram (EOG). The attainment of both excellent pressure sensing performance and bioelectrical acquirability of HCF, potentially initiates vast applications in wearable electronics. (c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Chinese traditional Xuan paper is distinguished for its high strength, high toughness, and high flexibility. Microscopically, this remarkable mechanical property is derived from its uniform nano- and microscale structure. Here, inspired by the multiscale structure design of biomaterials and Xuan paper, we report an ultrastrong and ultraflexible transparent cellulose fiber film with an ultrafine nano- and microscale structure. Through introducing micron-sized cellulose fibers into the cellulose nanofiber network, the multiscale film combines high strength (258 MPa) and toughness (7.90 MJ m–3) and low thermal expansion coefficients as well as high light transmittance (82.7%) and high haze (97.4%) simultaneously in one material. Moreover, the multiscale design endows the film to be restored to intactness after being fully folded and rolled, making it a high-performance and eco-friendly alternative film material for practical application in flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:Inspired by nature organisms, flexible moisture-responsive actuators and sensors fabricated by hydrophilic 2D materials have attracted increased demands by utilizing water in a green and renewable way. Graphene oxide (GO) and MXene have shown great potential in moisture-responsive actuators and sensors due to their superior properties and strong interaction with water. Bioinspired actuators with nacre-like structure have been successfully fabricated by anchoring MXene and GO into bacterial cellulose fibers, which exhibit excellent moisture-driven performance with superior mechanical properties and ambient antioxidation. The flexible actuator demonstrates sensitive response to moisture with intensive deformation. It is demonstrated that the moisture-responsive smart devices are able to function as an electrical switch and robotic gripper. Furthermore, a noncontact control system can also be implemented via monitoring the respiration and the humidity on the human skin surface. Devices with effective and sensitive response to solvent and temperature have also been demonstrated by the fabricated composite film. This work overcomes the shortcomings of the actuators prepared by MXene, offering a facile approach to fabricate flexible moisture-responsive actuators and sensors with wider applications.
Printed, all-carbon-based flexible humidity sensor using a cellulose nanofiber/graphene nanoplatelet composite

Abstract:Eco-friendly flexible humidity sensors with high sensing performance are desired for the next-generation wearable electronics. In this work, we developed a high-performance fully printed flexible humidity sensor using all-carbon functional materials. The electrodes and sensing layer of the sensor were printed using all-carbon-based cellulose nanofiber/graphene nanoplatelet (CNF/GNP) composites. The newly developed CNF/GNP ink can be prepared by simple mixing without any complex processes. These sensors showed a high resistive response of 240% over the relative humidity (RH) range of 30% to 90%, with response and recovery times of 17 s and 22 s, respectively, and good mechanical flexibility. Since CNF and GNPs are abundant in nature, degradable, and biocompatible, this work suggests the possibility of manufacturing inexpensive, eco-friendly sensors with high performances. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate the application of our sensor in human respiration detection, non-contact proximity sensing, and baby-diaper wetness monitoring.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have attracted widespread attention in recent years due to their potential applications for health monitoring and human–machine interfaces. However, the fabrication of environmentally friendly and well-performing pressure sensors using biobased materials remains a great challenge. Herein, a compressible carbon aerogel was prepared by sequential microfibrillation, periodate oxidization, and tannic acid (TA) cross-linking of cellulose fibers (CFs) followed by freeze-drying the as-prepared CF suspension and high-temperature pyrolysis of the obtained CF aerogel. The microfibrillation endows the carbon aerogel with a hierarchical structure, which improves the bonding strength and compressibility of the carbon aerogel. Periodate oxidation and TA cross-linking improved the mechanical properties of the carbon aerogel, while pyrolysis endowed the carbon aerogel with excellent conductivity, enabling the carbon aerogel to be a good pressure-sensing material. When assembled into a pressure sensor, the sensor shows a high sensitivity of 4 kPa–1, a fast response/recovery time of 32/30 ms, a low-pressure detection limit of 0.8 Pa, and good stability and excellent reproducibility (3000 cycles at 0.5 kPa). Moreover, the pressure sensor can be used to accurately monitor various human activities and also spatially resolve pressure variations when integrated into a sensor array. The pressure sensor also responds linearly to increased temperature and humidity. These results suggest that this hierarchical carbon aerogel-based pressure sensor has great potential for application as a multifunctional sensor.

Abstract:Humidity sensors have been widely used for humidity monitoring in industrial fields, while the unsatisfied flexibility, time-consuming or expensive integration process of conventional inorganic sensors significantly limits their application in wearable electronics. Paper-based humidity sensors are considered a feasible method to overcome these drawbacks due to its good flexibility and roll-to-roll manufacturability, while still suffers problems like poor durability and low sensitivity. In this study, we report a high-performance paper-based humidity sensor based on a rationally designed bilayer structure consisting of a nano-porous cellulose nanofiber/carbon nanotube (CNF/CNT) sensitive layer and a micro-porous paper substrate. The vast number of hydrophilic hydroxyl groups on the surface of CNF and paper fibers enables fast water molecules exchange between the humidity sensitive material and the external environment via hydrogen bonding, endowing the paper-based sensor with an excellent humidity responsive property. The obtained sensor displays a maximum response value of 65.0% (ΔI/I0) at 95% relative humidity (RH). Furthermore, the mechanical interlocking structure formed between the CNF/CNT layer and the paper layer provides the sensor with strong interlayer adhesion. Benefiting from the unique structure, the sensor also exhibits outstanding bending (with maximum curvature of 22.2 cm-1) and folding durability (up to 50 times). Finally, as a proof of concept, a simple humidity measuring device is assembled, which demonstrates an excellent responsive property to human breath and the change of air humidity, indicating a great potential of our paper-based humidity sensor towards practical applications.

Abstract:With the widespread adoption of green and sustainable development concepts, enhancing the sensing performance of flexible pressure sensors while reducing manufacturing costs and environmental pollution has emerged as a pressing research issue. Drawing inspiration from bamboo, a naturally occurring green plant, we utilized virgin bamboo pulp as the raw material for producing draw paper. The resulting bamboo cylinder structure serves as the dielectric layer. We propose an extremely low-cost, user-friendly, and sustainable origami method for fabricating paper-based sensors. The structural parameters of the sensor were thoroughly investigated and optimized through finite element simulations and practical experiments. Notable features of the sensor include high sensitivity (1.96 kPa–1 within 0–50 kPa), a low detection limit (2 Pa), a wide pressure detection range (0–500 kPa), rapid response and recovery times (40 and 45 ms, respectively), and reliable durability and stability (∼5000 cycles). Experimental results demonstrate the successful application of these sensors in areas such as human motion, health monitoring, and human–computer interaction. The potential applications of sensors extend to flexible wearables, smart healthcare, human–machine collaboration, and electronic skin (e-skin).

Abstract:Flexible, breathable, and degradable pressure sensors with excellent sensing performance are drawing tremendous attention for various practical applications in wearable artificial skins, healthcare monitoring, and artificial intelligence due to their flexibility, breathability, lightweight, decreased electronic rubbish, and environmentally friendly impact. However, traditional plastic or elastomer substrates with impermeability, uncomfortableness, mechanical mismatches, and nondegradability greatly restricted their practical applications. Therefore, the fabrication of such pressure sensors with high flexibility, facile degradability, and breathability is still a critical challenge and highly desired. Herein, we present a wearable, breathable, degradable, and highly sensitive MXene/protein nanocomposites-based pressure sensor. The fabricated MXene/protein-based pressure sensor is assembled from a breathable conductive MXene coated silk fibroin nanofiber (MXene-SF) membrane and a silk fibroin nanofiber membrane patterned with a MXene ink-printed (MXene ink-SF) interdigitated electrode, which can serve as the sensing layer and the electrode layer, respectively. The assembled pressure sensor exhibits a wide sensing range (up to 39.3 kPa), high sensitivity (298.4 kPa–1 for 1.4–15.7 kPa; 171.9 kPa–1 for 15.7–39.3 kPa), fast response/recovery time (7/16 ms), reliable breathability, excellent cycling stability over 10 000 cycles, good biocompatibility, and robust degradability. Furthermore, it shows great sensing performance in monitoring human psychological signals, acting as an artificial skin for the quantitative illustration of pressure distribution, and wireless biomonitoring in real time. Abstract:Today's widely used and rapidly updated electronic substrates are composed of petroleum-based polymers, but the resulting electronic waste (such as Dioxin, oxole, PCBs, etc.) will cause massive harm to the environment and human body. Therefore, we report an effective approach for fabricating recyclable and high-performance cellulose films as green electronic substrates by calendering. The crosslinking between -CH and -CH=CH- in cellulose modified by maleic anhydride led to the in-situ formation of a chemical crosslinking network, and hydrogen bonds acted as a sacrificial physical crosslinking network. The dual crosslinked cellulose film exhibits high strength (120.56 MPa), improved elongation (increased by 263%), and outstanding thermal stability (thermal decomposition temperature is 311 °C). Further, the film has been successfully used as a substrate for biomass sensor and realized apparent responses to changes. The scientific strategy paves the way for the large-scale fabrication of high-performance cellulose films and simultaneously promotes green electronic substrates' industrialization.
