Abstract:Memory impairment is a frequent complaint in insomniacs; however, it is not consistently demonstrated. It is unknown whether memory impairment in insomniacs involves neuroendocrine dysfunction. The participants in this study were selected from the clinical setting and included 21 patients with chronic insomnia disorder (CID), 25 patients with insomnia and comorbid depressive disorder (CDD), and 20 control participants without insomnia. We evaluated spatial working and reference memory, object working and reference memory, and object recognition memory using the Nine Box Maze Test. We also evaluated serum neuroendocrine hormone levels. Compared to the controls, the CID patients made significantly more errors in spatial working and object recognition memory (p < .05), whereas the CDD patients performed poorly in all the assessed memory types (p < .05). In addition, the CID patients had higher levels (mean difference [95% CI]) of corticotrophin-releasing hormone, cortisol (31.98 [23.97, 39.98] μg/l), total triiodothyronine (667.58 [505.71, 829.45] μg/l), and total thyroxine (41.49 [33.23, 49.74] μg/l) (p < .05), and lower levels of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (-35.93 [-38.83, -33.02] ng/l), gonadotropin-releasing hormone (-4.50 [-5.02, -3.98] ng/l) (p < .05), and adrenocorticotropic hormone compared to the CDD patients. After controlling for confounding variables, the partial correlation analysis revealed that the levels of cortisol positively correlated with the errors in object working memory (r = .534, p = .033) and negatively correlated with the errors in object recognition memory (r = -.659, p = .006) in the CID patients. The results suggest that the CID patients had selective memory impairment, which may be mediated by increased cortisol levels.

Abstract:Abstract Advances in developmental biology have shown that monozygous twins may not be as phenotypically identical as once believed, and the mechanisms responsible for such differences are now becoming clearer. Whether such phenotypic differences are capable of triggering graft rejection of an organ transplanted between identical twins remains unknown but the risks seem low, and long-term transplant outcome is excellent. Available evidence to guide immunosuppressive therapy in this setting is limited but a prudent approach would include the use of steroids together with a calcineurin inhibitor after transplantation. However, once the inevitable inflammatory response associated with transplant surgery has resolved, cautious reduction and eventually withdrawal of immunosuppression should be possible.

Abstract:Recently, starch-based packaging materials have become one of research hot points. In the present study, glycerol-plasticized composite films based on high amylose corn starch (HCS) and konjac glucomannan (KGM) were developed. The influence of KGM on the film-forming properties of HCS and the physicochemical properties of the resulting films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and water vapor permeability (WVP). The crystallinity and the proportion of short-range order structure of the films increased first and then declined with the addition of KGM. The micromorphology of the films exhibited the more even texture after KGM was incorporated in. The tensile strength, elongation at break and water resistance of HCS film were also improved significantly. The synergistic effect between HCS and KGM improved the film-forming ability of HCS. The optimal addition amount of KGM was 0.3 %.

Abstract:An active film composed of corn starch/κ-carrageenan and ethanolic grape seed extract (0, 1, 3, and 5 wt% of GSE on corn starch basis) were successfully prepared using the solvent casting technique. The effects of the different concentrations of ethanolic grape seed extract (GSE) on the physicochemical properties, antioxidant properties, and antibacterial properties of CS/κC films were analyzed. The results showed that the addition of GSE inhibited the recrystallization of starch in the composite film. The glass transition temperature of composite film is 121.65 °C. With the addition of GSE, the surface roughness of the composite film increased, and the cross-section displayed a stratification phenomenon. Meanwhile, when GSE was added to the composite film, the tensile strength of the composite film decreased (3.50 ± 0.27 MPa), the elongation at break increased (36.87 ± 2.08%), and the WVP increased (1.58 ± 0.03 g mm/m2·d· kPa). With the increase of the concentration of GSE in the composite film, the a* value and b* value of the composite film increase, the L* value decreases, and the opacity increases. The lipid oxidation test proved that the composite films containing 1% GSE has a significant inhibitory effect on the oxidation of lard (p < 0.05). The above results indicate that the GSE can be used as a food-grade packaging material and has a good application prospect in the food industry.

Abstract:Edible starch-based film was developed for packaging seasoning applied in instant noodles. The edible film can quickly dissolve into hot water so that the seasoning bag can mix in the soup of instant noodles during preparation. To meet the specific requirements of the packaging, such as reasonable high tensile properties, ductility under arid conditions, and low gas permeability, hydroxypropyl cornstarch with various edible additives from food-grade ingredients were applied to enhance the functionality of starch film. In this work, xylose was used as a plasticizer, cellulose crystals were used as a reinforcing agent, and laver was used to decrease gas permeability. The microstructures, interface, and compatibility of various components and film performance were investigated using an optical microscope under polarized light, scanning electron microscope, gas permeability, and tensile testing. The relationship was established between processing methodologies, microstructures, and performances. The results showed that the developed starch-based film have a modulus of 960 MPa, tensile strength of 36 Mpa with 14% elongation, and water vapor permeability less than 5.8 g/m2.h under 20% RH condition at room temperature (25 °C), which meets the general requirements of the flavor bag packaging used in instant noodles.

Abstract:In this paper, a new functional food packaging film material is successfully prepared from carrageenan (CG)-nanocellulose (NC)-grape peel extract (GPE) by immersion thermo-dry method, and the composite film material (CG-NC-GPE) is characterized and tested by different methods such as swelling analysis, scanning electron microscope (SEM), pH response detection (PHRD), and so on. The results showed that a functional group of chemical bonds appeared between GPE and NC-CG. With the addition of GPE, the mechanical ability and thermal stability of this composite film has changed. With excellent antibacterial ability, mechanical properties and pH response capability, the materials prepared in this study can be used to evaluate the deterioration of food and to provide the broad application prospects in food packaging.

Abstract:This study investigates the synergistic effect of konjac glucomannan (KGM) and k-carrageenan (k-CG) in developing sustainable food films. KGM and k-CG were dissolved at various ratios (20:80 to 80:20 KGM/k-CG ratio), casted, and dried. The resulting films were characterized by their mechanical properties, water vapor permeability, and water solubility. The results showed that the combination of KGM and k-CG resulted in a synergistic effect on the water solubility of the films, which decreased significantly compared to the individual components. The tensile strength increased significantly while the elongation at break decreased the more k-CG was added. An optimal point was found at a 60:40 ratio. The water vapor permeability of the films was also significantly higher compared to PVC film or k-CG film, indicating a lesser barrier property. X-ray diffraction investigation shows that films are amorphous (whereas pure kappa is crystallized), and no co-crystallization was observed based on the different KG/ k-CG ratios. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of combining KGM and k-CG to develop sustainable food films with enhanced properties. Using natural polysaccharides in the food industry can contribute to developing eco-friendly and sustainable packaging solutions.

Abstract:Using corn starch (CS) and κ-carrageenan(κC) as the raw material and active composite, respectively, films containing different concentrations of ethanol extract of onion skin were prepared. The effects of different concentrations of ethanol extract of onion skin (EEOS) on the physicochemical properties, as well as the antioxidant and antibacterial properties, of CS/κC films were also discussed. The addition of ethanol extract of onion skin inhibited the recrystallization of starch molecules in the composite films. It affected the microstructure of the composite films. The color of the composite films was deepened, the brightness was reduced, and the opacity was increased. Water vapor permeability increased, tensile strength decreased, and elongation at the break increased. The glass-transition temperature decreased. The clearance of DPPH radicals and ABTS cation radicals increased. Moreover, when the concentration of EEOS was 3%, the antioxidant effect of the films on oil was greatly improved and could effectively inhibit Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The above results showed that adding ethanol extract of onion skin improved the physicochemical properties and biological activities of the CS/κC composite films, so CS/κC/EEOS composite films can be used as an active packaging material to extend food shelf-life. These results can provide a theoretical basis for the production and application of corn starch/κ-carrageenan/ethanol extract of onion skin composite films.

Abstract:This study aimed to address the limited applicability of starch-based films in food packaging due to their inherent hydrophilicity, by developing a highly hydrophobic and mechanically reinforced film through compositing with alkyl ketene dimer (AKD). The FTIR analysis confirmed the successful introduction of AKD into the starch backbone via esterification by forming a β-keto ester linkage. Notably, the incorporation of AKD resulted in significant improvements in the modified film (S80A20), by exhibiting a higher water contact angle (WCA) of 128.28° and a reduced water vapor permeability (WVP) to 0.81×10<sup>-10</sup> (g m/m<sup>2</sup> s Pa). These enhancements were attributed to the inherent low surface energy of AKD and the increased surface roughness caused by AKD recrystallization. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the films were also enhanced due to the chemical crosslinking and intermolecular hydrogen bonding, as supported by the results of relaxation temperatures and molecular dynamics simulations. Considering the environmentally friendly and biodegradable nature of all components, the prepared hydrophobic films will hopefully be applied in food packaging.

Abstract:The κ-carrageenan/microbial-originated dextran-based multifunctional intelligent packaging films, integrated with natural anthocyanins as a colorant and ZnO as an antibacterial agent, were successfully developed using a casting method. Their applicability and functionality were systematically assessed through various analytical techniques. The addition of dextran, anthocyanins, and ZnO in the films resulted in an increased tensile strength (from 13.66 ± 0.53 to 29.70 ± 1.29 MPa) and elongation at break (from 16.69 ± 1.05 % to 39.49 ± 0.73 %), and decreased water solubility (from 64.94 ± 0.34 % to 32.84 ± 1.55 %) and water vapor barrier property (from 8.29 ± 0.12 × 10-10 g/m•s•Pa to 6.92 ± 0.1 × 10-10 g/m•s•Pa). Spectroscopic analysis revealed that the dextran, ZnO and anthocyanins were uniformly dispersed within the film-forming substrates, achieved through hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions. The addition of anthocyanins and ZnO not only enhanced the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of the film but also provided it with good pH sensitivity and color stability, making it highly promising for use in shrimp freshness monitoring. All the films were shown to be biodegradable, decomposing completely in soil within 30 days. Overall, these results suggest that the films could serve as a potential replacement for plastic food packaging and additionally monitor the freshness of food.

Abstract:Currently, food packaging is facing a critical transition period and a major challenge: it must preserve the food products' quality and, at the same time, it must meet the current requirements of the circular economy and the fundamental principles of packaging materials eco-design. Our research presents the development of eco-friendly packaging films based on Opuntia ficus-indica cladodes (OFIC) as renewable resources. OFIC powder (OFICP)-agar, OFICP-agar-gum arabic (GA), and OFICP-agar-xanthan (XG) blend films were eco-friendlily prepared by a solution casting method. The films' properties were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (X-RD), and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Water solubility and moisture content were also determined. Morphology, thickness, molecular interactions, miscibility, crystallinity, and thermal properties, were affected by adjusting the gums (GA and XG) content and glycerol in the blend films. Moisture content increased with increasing glycerol and XG content, and when 1.5 g of GA was added. Water solubility decreased when glycerol was added at 50% and increased with increasing GA and XG content. FTIR and XRD confirmed strong intermolecular interactions between the different blend film compounds, which were reflected in the shifting, appearance, and disappearance of FTIR bands and XRD peaks, indicating excellent miscibility. DSC results revealed a glass transition temperature (Tg) below room temperature for all prepared blend films, indicating that they are flexible and soft at room temperature. The results corroborated that the addition of glycerol at 30% and the GA to the OFICP increased the stability of the film, making it ideal for different food packaging applications.

Abstract:The research and development trend of food packaging is changing from synthetic polymers to eco-friendly materials such as polysaccharides and other hydrocolloids, aiming to solve the problem of pollution from plastic wastes. In this work, a biodegradable food packaging noted KC/PT film was constructed using konjac glucomannan (KGM)/carrageenan (CAR) composite as the matrix and peppermint essential oil (PO)/thymol (THY) with synergistic effect as the reinforcements. The KC/PT film showed great mechanical properties, UV-blocking activity, increased water contact angle and reduced water vapor permeability. Due to the synergistic effect between PO and THY, the KC/PT film showed excellent antioxidant performance and antibacterial behavior against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538. The antibacterial mechanism was further illustrated. The prepared KC/PT film, as a unique packaging film, not only successfully extended the shelf life of strawberry to 16 days at 4 °C, but also well expressed its environmental friendliness that it could nearly degrade after 47 days in natural soil conditions. Most importantly, the film exhibited good stability in terms of mechanical properties, antioxidant activity and antibacterial performances after 4 months storage. Therefore, the film the KC/PT film has great potentials in the field of food packaging area.

Abstract:Hydrophilic konjac glucomannan (KGM)/hydrophobic ethyl cellulose (EC) film was prepared in the ethanol/water environment. The film-forming solution and film properties were both characterized to analyze the molecular interaction changes. Although higher ethanol usage enhanced the stability of the film-forming solution, it did not benefit the film property improvement. The SEM images showed some fibrous structure on the air surface of the films, consistent with the XRD results. The changing trend of mechanical properties and the FTIR results suggested that both ethanol content and ethanol evaporation impacted the molecular interaction during the film formation. The surface hydrophobicity results indicated that the ethanol content could cause significant EC aggregation changes on the film surface only with high EC contents. The water vapor permeability results suggested that higher ethanol usage decreased the compactness of the films. Considering all results, the 20 % ethanol content and the weight ratio of KGM: EC = 7:3 were suggested for the film preparation due to the superior properties in most properties. This study contributed to the understanding of polysaccharide interaction in the ethanol/water environment and offered an alternative biodegradable packaging film.

Abstract:In order to solve the increasingly serious environmental problems caused by plastic-based packaging, carrageenan-based films are drawing much attentions in food packaging applications, due to low cost, biodegradability, compatibility, and film-forming property. The purpose of this article is to present a comprehensive review of recent developments in carrageenan-based films, including fabrication strategies, physical and chemical properties and novel food packaging applications. Carrageenan can be extracted from red algae mainly by hydrolysis, ultrasonic-assisted and microwave-assisted extraction, and the combination of multiple extraction methods will be future trends in carrageenan extraction methods. Carrageenan can form homogeneous film-forming solutions and fabricate films mainly by direct coating, solvent casting and electrospinning, and mechanism of film formation was discussed in detail. Due to the inherent limitations of the pure carrageenan film, physical and chemical properties of carrageenan films were enhanced by incorporation with other compounds. Therefore, carrageenan-based films can be widely used for extending the shelf life of food and monitoring the food freshness by inhibiting microbial growth, reducing moisture loss and the respiration, etc. This article will provide useful guidelines for further research on carrageenan-based films.

Abstract:Films with excellent mechanical and activity have potential application in food preservation. Active films were prepared by blending Konjac glucomannan/Pullulan/Microcrystalline cellulose and Tea polyphenols. The effect of different content of MCC (0%–20%), and different treatment methods of film-preparing process, including ultrasonic or magnetic stirring on rheological properties, physicochemical, morphological characteristics, antioxidant and antibacterial were explored. Results suggested that ultrasound lowered the viscosity of film-solution, while adding MCC increased the water vapor permeability (WVP) and haze degree of films. Incorporating of optimal content of MCC (10%–15%), and treated by ultrasound could further increased the tensile strength (TS), U-10% film showed the highest TS (117.61 MPa), ultrasound could make the evenly disperses MCC in film-matrix by SEM. Additionally, films with TP presented excellent antioxidant activities and antibacterial activities against S.aureus and E.coli . Finally, the active films effectively preserved Agaricus bisporus and strawberries. Overall, the active films have potential applications in food packaging.

Abstract:In recent years, the application of biopolymer-based nanofibers prepared via microfluidic blow spinning (MBS) for food packaging has continuously increased due to their advantages of biocompatibility, biodegradability, and safety. However, the poor spinnability, undesirable water barrier capacity, and loss of antibacterial and antioxidant properties of biopolymer-based nanofibers strictly restrict their real-world applications. In this work, carvacrol (CV) incorporated konjac glucomannan (KGM)/polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibrous films (KP-CV) were produced by MBS. The FTIR spectra and XRD analysis revealed the hydrogen bonding interactions among CV, PLA, and KGM, thus significantly improving the TS of KP-CV nanofibrous films from 0.23 to 1.27 MPa with increased content of CV from 0 % to 5 %. Besides, KP-CV nanofibrous films showed improved thermal stability, excellent hydrophobicity (WCA: 128.19°, WVP: 1.02 g mm/m 2 h kPa), and sustained release of CV combined with good antioxidant activities (DPPH radical scavenging activity: 77.51 ± 1.57 %), and antibacterial properties against S. aureus (inhibition zone: 26.33 mm) and E. coli (inhibition zone: 22.67 mm). Therefore, as prepared KP-CV nanofibrous films can be potentially applied as packaging materials for the extended shelf life of cherry tomatoes.

Abstract:New food packaging has shown research significance in the face of increasing demand for high-quality foods and growing attention paid to food safety. In this study, ginger essential oil microcapsule composite films were prepared by combining microcapsules prepared by a complex coacervation method with gelatin films, and the mechanical properties and active functions of the composite films were analyzed. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry confirmed the successful encapsulation of ginger essential oil. The scanning electron microscopy of the composite films showed the microcapsules and gelatin film matrix were highly compatible. During the entire storage period, the antioxidant capacity of the ginger essential oil microcapsule films weakened more slowly than ginger essential oil microcapsules and could be maintained at a relatively high level for a long time. The microcapsule films had excellent inhibitory effects on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis. Therefore, the direct addition of microcapsules to a film matrix can broaden the application range of microcapsules and increase the duration of the release of active ingredients. Ginger essential oil microcapsule films are potential biodegradable food packaging films with long-lasting activity.

Abstract:A novel film composed of Polygonatum cyrtonema extracts (PCE), xanthan gum (XG), flaxseed gum (FG) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was prepared (XFCP). Addition of PCE has decreased the light transmittance, while enhanced the UV blocking performance, antioxidant activity, tensile strength and elongation at break of XFCP due to polysaccharides, polyphenols, and flavonoid in PCE. Structural analyses by FTIR and XRD indicated the hydrogen-bonding interaction between PCE, XG, FG and CMC. It was found that compared with the control sample, XFCP2.5% with the lowest WVTR was able to prolong the shelf life of mango. The overall quality of mango was also improved in terms of lower decay rate, weight loss rate, total soluble solid, and polyphenol oxidase, higher titratable acidity, Vc, and superoxide dismutase than control mango upon 8 days of storage. This effectively expanded the application of PCE into food packaging in addition to merely as Chinese traditional medicine herbs.
