Abstract:Edible packaging with active and intelligent properties has gained recent attention, although the concept of edible packaging itself is not new. These packages are created using various substances such as polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids, either individually or in combination. To find the optimal combination for specific applications, the physical and chemical properties of these packages are measured. Active or intelligent properties are achieved by incorporating substances, often extracts, with antioxidant, antibacterial, or other beneficial properties into the packaging. The aim of the research was to develop an edible packaging based on κ-carrageenan, with spent coffee grounds as potential additives to impart active properties of edible/biodegradable packaging. To assess the suitability of the packaging for future applications, the thesis evaluated its textural properties, including thickness, water content, flexibility, and strength. Additionally, the antioxidant activity and free radical scavenging capacity of the packaging were measured using various methods. Elasticity of the packaging was increased (p < 0.05) with the addition of spent coffee grounds, the same as polyphenolic compounds (p < 0.05). While recent attempts have been made to utilize spent coffee grounds for various purposes, their incorporation into edible/biodegradable packaging remains certainly not enough explored. The research emphasized the possibility of the incorporation of spent coffee grounds into edible/biodegradable matrices and the findings will serve as a good foundation for further studies.
[The diastolic function of the right and left heart ventricles in patients with primary pulmonary hypertension].

Abstract:To evaluate the condition of left and right ventricular functions in patients with primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) 21 patients (13 females and 8 males, mean age 35.4 +/- 10.0) were examined. The patients were ill for 5.7 +/- 3.5 years. Ventricular filling was characterized basing on computer data of transmitral and transtricuspid diastolic flow obtained at doppler echocardiography. Right ventricular function proved impaired in all the examinees: early in the disease the speed of early filling (Ve) was inhibited, while late filling was enhanced (Va). At terminal stages of the disease Ve increased, but Va reduced. Left ventricular function was also involved in all the patients: low Ve with the disease progression became more and more evident.

Abstract:In this study, spent coffee grounds (SCG) were utilized as a reinforcing biowaste filler in thermoplastic starch/alginate (TPS-Alg) films. Wet ball milling was used to reduce the SCG particle size. The UV transmission barrier of the TPS-Alg films comprising dark brown SCG particles was 1.5–3.4 times higher than that of binary matrices. The incorporation of SCG induced several voids within the polymeric chains, decreasing the moisture content by 2.10% and reducing the water vapor permeability from (10.50 ± 1.07) × 10 − 13 to (9.03 1.69) × 10 − 13 ng·s − 1 m − 2 Pa − 1 . A slight improvement in the thermal stability of the TPS-Alg/SCG blends was observed in comparison to that of the pure TPS-Alg, owing to the partial substitution of TPS with SCG. The notable tensile strength and tensile modulus of TPS-Alg/SCG-10 were respectively 67.6 6.1 MPa and 4.7 0.3 GPa in spite of the stress concentration and plasticizing effects from SCG fillers. The overall results indicate a significant potential of the as-developed material for application in food packaging.

Abstract:The need to replace conventional, usually single-use, packaging materials, so important for the future of resources and of the environment, has propelled research towards the development of packaging-based on biopolymers, fully biodegradable and even edible. The current study furthers the research on development of such films and tests the modification of the properties of the previously developed biopolymeric material, by adding 10, respectively 20% w/v essential oils of lemon, grapefruit, orange, cinnamon, clove, mint, ginger, eucalypt, and chamomile. Films with a thickness between 53 and 102 μm were obtained, with a roughness ranging between 147 and 366 nm. Most films had a water activity index significantly below what is required for microorganism growth, as low as 0.27, while all essential oils induced microbial growth reduction or 100% inhibition. Tested for the evaluation of physical, optical, microbiological or solubility properties, all the films with the addition of essential oil in the composition showed improved properties compared to the control sample.

Abstract:Spent coffee grounds (SCG) are the main residues from the soluble coffee industry. The objective of this work was to evaluate different extraction methods of oil and diterpenes (kahweol and cafestol) from SCG, such as solid–liquid extraction, supercritical extraction or direct saponification, as well as to determine the phenolic composition and antioxidant capacities (by radical scavenging activity, inhibition of linoleic acid oxidation and β-carotene bleaching method) of SCG and defatted SCG. Among assayed oil extraction methods, the Soxhlet extraction process recovered the highest oil amounts (26.4%). The free fatty acid profile showed a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (50%) for the lipid fraction extracted from SCG by each method used, mainly linoleic and palmitic acids (about 45 and 30%, respectively). SCG was found to be an important source of polyphenolic compounds, showing 255 and 273 mg GAE/g dm in ethanolic extracts from SCG and defatted SCG, respectively, and was active as an antioxidant. The method that reached the highest level of diterpenes (214 mg/100 g SCG for kahweol and 466 mg/100 g SCG for cafestol) was direct saponification compared with the saponification of oil extracted by solid–liquid extraction or supercritical extraction. Finally, the presence of bioactive compounds of SCG identified in this study could be of great interest for the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, giving added value to a residue generated from instant coffee industrial processing, readily available in large quantities.

Abstract:Biomass‐derived spent coffee grounds have been used as fillers in polypropylene to realize its recycling utilization after heat‐treated in air to remove the coffer oil efficiently. The obtained composite holds lower water absorption, higher hydrophobicity, and better mechanical properties, implying its potential applications in the field of food packaging. Biomass‐derived wastes as the additive of nondegradable plastics have been paid more attention due to the ever‐growing environmental pollution and energy crisis. Herein, the spent coffee grounds (SCG) have been used as fillers in polypropylene (PP) after the heat treatment to realize its recycling utilization. The effect of the heat treatment atmosphere on the properties of the obtained SCG and SCG/PP composites has been investigated systematically. The results show that the residual coffee oil can be removed more thoroughly under an air atmosphere than under a nitrogen atmosphere at a relatively low cost and an eco‐friendly process. The lower residual oil rate of SCG is beneficial to improve the comminution and further enhance the affinity with the PP matrix. The obtained SCG/PP composites hold lower water absorption, higher hydrophobicity, and better mechanical properties, implying their potential applications in the field of food packaging. Research Highlights Spent coffee grounds have been used as fillers in PP after the heat treatment. The heat treatment in the air is more favorable for the removal of the coffer oil of SCG. The low residual oil rate in SCG can improve its comminution and affinity with PP. The SCG/PP composites hold excellent performances for food packaging applications.

Abstract:The research aim was to use orange essential oil and trehalose in a carrageenan matrix to form edible packaging. The edible packaging experimentally produced by casting from an aqueous solution were evaluated by the following analysis: UV-Vis spectrum, transparency value, transmittance, attenuated total reflectance Fourier-Transform spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and antimicrobial activity. The obtained results showed that the combination of orange essential oil with trehalose decreases the transmittance value in the UV and Vis regions (up to 0.14% ± 0.02% at 356 nm), meaning that produced films can act as a UV protector. Most produced films in the research were resistant to Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus), though most films did not show antibacterial properties against Gram-negative bacteria and yeasts. FTIR and SEM confirmed that both the amount of carrageenan used and the combination with orange essential oil influenced the compatibility of trehalose with the film matrix. The research showed how different combinations of trehalose, orange essential oils and carrageenan can affect edible film properties. These changes represent important information for further research and the possible practical application of these edible matrices.

Abstract:The aim of this work concerned the production of an active food packaging suitable for refrigerated foods. Polylactic-acid-based films were produced by optimizing the solvent casting technique and testing different loadings of extracts obtained from spent coffee grounds. Indeed, an extract obtained by high-pressure and -temperature extraction (HPTE) and a further purified extract by liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) were separately used as active agents, and the effects on packaging features and active compounds migration were analyzed. The selected active agents showed antioxidant and lipid peroxidation inhibition effects on food simulants (peroxide values of 9.2 ÷ 12.0 meqO2/kg extra virgin olive oil), demonstrating the possibility of enhancing food shelf life. In addition, significant effects on the packaging structure due to the presence of the extract were observed, since it can enhance gas barrier properties of the polymer (O2 permeability of 1.6 ÷ 1.3 × 10−9 cm2/s) and confer better processability. In general, the HPTE extract exhibited better performances than the further purified extract, which was due to the presence of a complex pool of antioxidants and the browning effect on the film but a limited loading capacity on the polymer (840 μg caffeine/g PLA), while higher loading capabilities were enabled using LLE extract.

Production and Characterization of k-Carrageenan Films Incorporating Cymbopogon winterianus Essential Oil as New Food Packaging Materials

Abstract:The global production of synthetic plastics from petroleum-based raw ingredients exceeds 150 million metric tons. The environment is threatened by tons of plastic waste, thus endangering wildlife and the public's health. These consequences increased the interest in biodegradable polymers as potential substitutes for traditional packaging materials. This study aimed to produce and characterize k-carrageenan films incorporating Cymbopogon winterianus essential oil, in which citronellal was determined to be the major compound (41.12%). This essential oil presented remarkable antioxidant activity, as measured through DPPH (IC50 = 0.06 ± 0.01%, v/v; AAI = 85.60 ± 13.42) and β-carotene bleaching (IC50 = 3.16 ± 0.48%, v/v) methods. The essential oil also showed antibacterial properties against Listeria monocytogenes LMG 16779 (diameter of inhibition zone = 31.67 ± 5.16 mm and MIC = 8 μL/mL), which were also observed when incorporated in the k-carrageenan films. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy showed the reduction of the biofilms of this bacterium, and even its inactivation, due to visible destruction and loss of integrity when the biofilms were created directly on the developed k-carrageenan films. This study also revealed the quorum sensing inhibition potential of Cymbopogon winterianus essential oil (diameter of violacein production inhibition = 10.93 ± 0.81 mm), where it could impede intercellular communication and, hence, lower violacein synthesis. The produced k-carrageenan films were transparent (>90%) and slightly hydrophobic (water contact angle > 90°). This work demonstrated the viability of using Cymbopogon winterianus essential oil to produce k-carrageenan bioactive films as new food packaging materials. Future work should focus on the scale-up production of these films.

Abstract:Utilizing spent coffee grounds (SCG) to produce high value-added materials is attractive and meaningful. In this work, a multi-functional biomass film is prepared from SCG and dissolving pulp through a dissolution and regeneration process. Importantly, dissolving pulp as a reinforcing additive can significantly enhance the mechanical strength of the regenerated SCG film. The prepared composite films with SCG contents ranging from 33.33 wt% to 81.82 wt% demonstrate excellent optical and mechanical properties. The composite film with 66.67 wt% SCG exhibits outstanding UV blocking capability (99.43 % for UVB and 96.59 % for UVA) and high haze (69.22%); meanwhile, the composite film with 33.33 wt% SCG performs better mechanical strength (58.69 MPa tensile strength and 3.13 GPa Young's modulus) and superior biodegradability (fully degraded within 26 days by being buried in soil) than commercial plastic. This work generally introduces a facile and practical approach to converting waste SCG into promising materials in various fields.

Abstract:Edible packaging films produced from biomaterials are environmentally friendly, promising alternatives against synthetic plastics films. The aim of this study was to produce a low-cost edible film from waste dry walnut shell by casting method. Effects of the plasticizer type and concentration, lemon essential oil (LEO) and aloe vera gel (AVG) addition on edible films properties were investigated. Produced edible films characterization analysis were realized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Moisture content, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), water solubility, swelling index, thicknesses and color parameters of the produced edible films were investigated. Moisture content of the films was decreased between 23.3–50.6% after LEO and AVG addition, except the moisture content of the film plasticized with 20% sorbitol was increased by 518%. WVTR of the films were increased between 8.7–72.3% after LEO and AVG addition due to the hydrophobic character of LEO. Glycerol plasticized edible films water solubility were decreased between 27.3–75.9%, sorbitol plasticized edible films water solubility were increased between 237.5–100.8% with LEO and AVG incorporation. The swelling index of C1 was reduced by 51.5%, C2 was reduced by 62.4%, C4 was reduced by 36.1%. The swelling index of the C3 was increased by 10.5%, C5 was increased by 21.5%. LEO and AVG addition increased to the film thickness maximum 79.2%. Total color changes (ΔE) of glycerol plasticized films were higher than sorbitol plasticized film. The edible film produced can be used in food packaging due to the appropriate physical and barrier properties.

Abstract:Due to the growing global population and subsequent environment degradation, as well as changes in the climate, changing consumers' dietary habits is necessary to create strategies for the most efficient use of natural resources to eliminate waste in the food supply chain. The packaging of food is essential to preserve the food's properties, extend its shelf life and offer nutritional information. Food products are packaged in various materials of which the most used are plastics, but they have a negative impact on the environment. Various efforts have been made to address this situation, but unfortunately, this includes recycling rather than replacing them with sustainable solutions. There is a trend toward edible packaging materials with more additional functions (antioxidant, antimicrobial and nutritional properties). Edible packaging is also a sustainable solution to avoid food waste and environment pollution. Oilcakes are the principal by-products obtained from the oil extraction process. These by-products are currently underused as animal feed, landfilling or compost. Because they contain large amounts of valuable compounds and are low-cost ingredients, they can be used to produce materials suitable for food packaging. This review covers the recent developments in oilcake-based packaging materials. Special emphasis is placed on the study of materials and technologies that can be used to make edible film in order to research the most suitable ways of developing oilcake-based film that can be consumed simultaneously with the product. These types of materials do not exist on the market.

Abstract:The pollution caused by petroleum‐derived plastic materials has become a major environmental problem that has encouraged the development of new compostable and environmentally friendly materials for food packaging based on biomodified polymers with household residues. This study aims to design, synthesize, and characterize a biobased polymeric microstructure film from polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan reinforced with holocellulose from spent coffee grounds for food‐sustainable packaging. Chemical isolation with a chlorite‐based solution was performed to obtain the reinforced holocellulose from the spent coffee ground, and the solvent casting method was used to obtain the films to study. Physicochemical and microscopic characterizations were conducted to identify and select the best formulations using a simplex‐centroid design analysis. The response surface methodology results indicate that the new packaging material obtained with equal amounts of polymers and reinforced material (1:1:1) possesses the appropriate barrier properties and microstructural character to prevent water attack and hydrophobic behavior and thus could be used as an alternative for food packaging materials.

Abstract:An active film composed of corn starch/κ-carrageenan and ethanolic grape seed extract (0, 1, 3, and 5 wt% of GSE on corn starch basis) were successfully prepared using the solvent casting technique. The effects of the different concentrations of ethanolic grape seed extract (GSE) on the physicochemical properties, antioxidant properties, and antibacterial properties of CS/κC films were analyzed. The results showed that the addition of GSE inhibited the recrystallization of starch in the composite film. The glass transition temperature of composite film is 121.65 °C. With the addition of GSE, the surface roughness of the composite film increased, and the cross-section displayed a stratification phenomenon. Meanwhile, when GSE was added to the composite film, the tensile strength of the composite film decreased (3.50 ± 0.27 MPa), the elongation at break increased (36.87 ± 2.08%), and the WVP increased (1.58 ± 0.03 g mm/m2·d· kPa). With the increase of the concentration of GSE in the composite film, the a* value and b* value of the composite film increase, the L* value decreases, and the opacity increases. The lipid oxidation test proved that the composite films containing 1% GSE has a significant inhibitory effect on the oxidation of lard (p < 0.05). The above results indicate that the GSE can be used as a food-grade packaging material and has a good application prospect in the food industry.

Abstract:In this research, we developed two alternative packaging materials: collagen-sodium alginate-pomegranate peel powder (CSP) and collagen-sodium alginate-chitosan (CSC), leveraging solid waste from both the leather and food industries. A comparative analysis was done between CSP and CSC film to evaluate their efficacy and potentiality as sustainable packaging material. CSC film showed reduced water solubility (39.4 %), water vapor transmission rate (27.3 gh -1 m -2 ), and opacity (0.6 A 600 /mm) along with improved contact angle (69.7°) compared to CSP film. However, CSP film exhibited improved mechanical strength (10.9 MPa) and biodegradability (72.1 %) along with reduced oxygen permeability (0.6 meq/kg) compared to CSC film. Furthermore, CSP and CSC films showed significant inhibitory effect against two commonly available pathogen strains. A hybrid Entropy-Combined Compromise Solution (CoCoSo) analysis results demonstrated the superior performance of CSC films (γi=3.049) as packaging material. The edibility of the film was confirmed through pathogen test, in vitro cytotoxicity and stimulated digestibility assays. Additionally, from the thermal analysis it is apparent that the optimum degradation temperature for CSC film was 584 °C which is higher than any other green packaging material reported in the literature. Therefore, this study can pave the way for the fabrication of thermally stable edible packaging material from waste sources.

Abstract:Aligned with the principles of the circular economy and aiming at the production of environmentally friendly materials for food packaging applications, sustainable biocomposite films based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and coffee silverskin (SS), were developed. Coffee silverskin is a by-product of the coffee roasting process, while PLA is one of the most promising bio-based polymers. Several composites were prepared with different loadings of SS, ranging from 2.5 to 20 wt.%, via the solution casting method. The findings indicated that the effective dispersion of coffee silverskin in PLA was successfully accomplished and that a bleaching treatment of the filler leads to better interfacial interaction. The addition of silverskin, in any proportion, did not affect the melting point and glass transition temperature of the polymer matrix or the oxygen permeability of the film. Moreover, the degree of swelling was increased, more so for the films with modified particles, whereas the water vapor transmission rate and permeability increased only after the addition of high amounts (>10%) of surface-treated silverskin. A gradual decrease in color lightness was measured with the increasing concentration of silverskin, and the color was more intense in the untreated samples. The antioxidant activity of the films increased gradually with increasing additions of coffee silverskin due to the presence of compounds such as polyphenols. The chemical treatment of coffee silverskin resulted in the films having improved mechanical properties, as the chemical treatment facilitated stronger bonding between the base material and the additive. Therefore, sustainable composites with enhanced antioxidant activity can be produced by the incorporation of a food industry by-product into a PLA matrix.

The objective of the research was to investigate the effects of turmeric essential oil (TEO) on corn starch and pectin extract films manufactured by solution casting method. The antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of the oil was confirmed by the tests: antimicrobial diffusion disk, determination of the content of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity by the DPPH and FRAP method. The chromatographic analysis confirmed the presence of active chemical constituents such as Turmerone, Ar-Turmerone and β-Turmerone. The results showed that the oil promoted a change in the color of the films, increased mechanical strength and reduced flexibility, keeping transparency, solubility, WVP and thermal stability unchanged. In the direct application test of the film as packaging for sliced bread, no visible contamination was detected during the nine weeks of analysis. Therefore, the active film with 3 % TEO was shown to be a viable solution for manufacturing biodegradable and safe active films that can be applied as food packaging.

Abstract:Current estimates place the amount of spent coffee grounds annually generated worldwide in the 6 million ton figure, with the sources of spent coffee grounds being classified as domestic (i.e., household), commercial (i.e., coffee houses, cafeterias and restaurants), and industrial (i.e., soluble and instant coffee industries). The majority of the produced spent coffee grounds are currently being inappropriately destined for landfills or to a form of energy recovery (e.g., incineration) as a refuse-derived fuel. The disposal of spent coffee in landfills allows for its anaerobic degradation with consequent generation and emission of aggressive greenhouse gases such as methane and CO2, and energy recovery processes must be considered an end-of-life stage in the lifecycle of spent coffee grounds, as a way of delaying CO2 emissions and of avoiding emissions of toxic organic volatile compounds generated during combustion of this type of waste. Aside from these environmental issues, an aspect that should be considered is the inappropriate disposal of a product (SCG) that presents unique thermo-mechanical properties and textural characteristics and that is rich in a diversity of classes of compounds, such as polysaccharides, proteins, phenolics, lipids and alkaloids, which could be recovered and used in a diversity of applications, including food-related ones. Therefore, researchers worldwide are invested in studying a variety of possible applications for spent coffee grounds and products thereof, including (but not limited to) biofuels, catalysts, cosmetics, composite materials, feed and food ingredients. Hence, the aim of this essay was to present a comprehensive review of the recent literature on the proposals for utilization of spent coffee grounds in food-related applications, with focus on chemical composition of spent coffee, recovery of bioactive compounds, use as food ingredients and as components in the manufacture of composite materials that can be used in food applications, such as packaging.
