Abstract:Room temperature superconductivity has been achieved under high pressure in an organically derived carbonaceous sulfur hydride with a critical superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 288 kelvin. This development is part of a new class of dense, hydrogen rich materials with remarkably high critical temperatures. Metal superhydrides are a subclass of these materials that provide a different and potentially more promising route to very high Tc superconductivity. The most promising binary metal superhydrides contain alkaline or rare earth elements, and recent experimental observations of LaH10 have shown them capable of Tc s up to 250 to 260 kelvin. Predictions have shown yttrium superhydrides to be the most promising with an estimated Tc in excess of 300 kelvin for YH10. Here we report the synthesis of an yttrium superhydride that exhibits superconductivity at a critical temperature of 262 kelvin at 182 gigapascal. A palladium thin film assists the synthesis by protecting the sputtered yttrium from oxidation and promoting subsequent hydrogenation. Phonon mediated superconductivity is established by the observation of zero resistance, an isotope effect and the reduction of Tc under an external magnetic field. The upper critical magnetic field is 103 tesla at zero temperature. We suggest YH9 is the synthesized product based on comparison of the measured Raman spectra and Tc to calculated Raman results.

Abstract:Flourishing rare earth superhydrides are a class of recently discovered materials that exhibit near-room-temperature superconductivity at high pressures, ushering in a new era of superconductivity research at high pressures. Yttrium superhydrides drew the most attention among these superhydrides due to their abundance of stoichiometries and excellent superconductivities. Here, we carried out a comprehensive study of yttrium superhydrides in a wide pressure range of 140 GPa–300 GPa. We successfully synthesized a series of superhydrides with the compositions of YH 4 , YH 6 , YH 7 , and YH 9 , and reported superconducting transition temperatures of 82 K at 167 GPa, 218 K at 165 GPa, 29 K at 162 GPa, and 230 K at 300 GPa, respectively, as evidenced by sharp drops in resistance. The structure and superconductivity of YH 4 were taken as a representative example and were also examined using x-ray diffraction measurements and the superconductivity suppression under external magnetic fields, respectively. Clathrate YH 10 , a candidate for room-temperature superconductor, was not synthesized within the study pressure and temperature ranges of up to 300 GPa and 2000 K. The current study established a detailed foundation for future research into room-temperature superconductors in polynary yttrium-based superhydrides.

Abstract:Inspired by the high critical temperature in yttrium superhydride and the low stabilized pressure in superconducting cerium superhydride, we carry out four independent runs to synthesize yttrium-cerium alloy hydrides. The phases examined by the Raman scattering and x-ray diffraction measurements. The superconductivity is detected with the zero-resistance state at the critical temperature in the range of 97-140 K at pressures ranging from 114 GPa to 120$\pm$4 GPa. The maximum critical temperature of the synthesized hydrides is larger than those reported for cerium hydrides, while the corresponding stabilized pressure is much lower than those for superconducting yttrium hydrides. The structural analysis and theoretical calculations suggest that the phase of Y$_{0.5}$Ce$_{0.5}$H$_9$ has the space group $P6_3/mmc$ with the calculated critical temperature of 119 K, in fair agreement with the experiments. These results indicate that alloying superhydrides indeed can maintain relatively high critical temperature at modest pressures accessible by many laboratories.

Abstract:The discovery of high-temperature conventional superconductivity in H3S with a critical temperature of Tc=203 K was followed by the recent record of Tc ~250 K in the face-centered cubic (fcc) lanthanum hydride LaH10 compound. It was realized in a new class of hydrogen-dominated compounds having a clathrate-like crystal structure in which hydrogen atoms form a 3D framework and surround a host atom of rare earth elements. Yttrium hydrides are predicted to have even higher Tc exceeding room temperature. In this paper, we synthesized and refined the crystal structure of new hydrides: YH4, YH6, and YH9 at pressures up to 237 GPa finding that YH4 crystalizes in the I4/mmm lattice, YH6 in Im-3m lattice and YH9 in P63/mmc lattice in excellent agreement with the calculations. The observed very high-temperature superconductivity is comparable to that found in fcc-LaH10: the pressure dependence of Tc for YH9 also displays a "dome like shape" with the highest Tc of 243 K at 201 GPa. We also observed a Tc of 227 K at 237 GPa for the YH6 phase. However, the measured Tcs are notably lower by ~30 K than predicted. Evidence for superconductivity includes the observation of zero electrical resistance, a decrease of Tc under an external magnetic field and an isotope effect. The theoretically predicted fcc YH10 with the promising highest Tc>300 K was not stabilized in our experiments under pressures up to 237 GPa.

Characterization of near-room-temperature superconductivity in yttrium superhydrides

Abstract:Recently, Troyan et al (2019 <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1908.01534" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1908.01534">arXiv:1908.01534</a>) and Kong et al (2019 <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1909.10482" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1909.10482">arXiv:1909.10482</a>) extended near-room-temperature superconductors family by new yttrium superhydride polymorphs, YHn (n = 4,6,7,9), which exhibit superconducting transition temperatures in the range of Tc = 210-243 K at pressure of P = 160-255 GPa. In this paper, temperature dependent upper critical field data, Bc2(T), for highly-compressed mixture of YH4+YH6 phases (reported by Kong et al 2019 <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1909.10482" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1909.10482">arXiv:1909.10482</a>) is analysed to deduce the ratio of Tc to the Fermi temperature, Tf. Our analysis shows that in all considered scenarios the YH4+YH6 mixture has the ratio 0.01 < Tc/Tf < 0.04. As the result, YH4+YH6 falls in the unconventional superconductors band in the Uemura plot. It is also found that the characteristic temperature of the order parameter amplitude fluctuations, Tfluc, in the YH4+YH6 mixture is only several percent above observed Tc, and thus the superconducting transition in yttrium superhydride polymorphs is fundamentally limited by thermodynamics fluctuations.

Abstract:Controlling the formation and stoichiometric content of desired phases of materials has become a central interest for the study of a variety of fields, notably high temperature superconductivity under extreme pressures. The further possibility of accessing metastable states by initiating reactions by x-ray triggered mechanisms over ultra-short timescales is enabled with the development of x-ray free electron lasers (XFEL). Utilizing the exceptionally high brilliance x-ray pulses from the EuXFEL, we report the synthesis of a previously unobserved yttrium hydride under high pressure, along with non-stoichiometric changes in hydrogen content as probed at a repetition rate of 4.5\,MHz using time-resolved x-ray diffraction. Exploiting non-equilibrium pathways we synthesize and characterize a hydride with yttrium cations in an \textit{A}15 structure type at 125\,GPa, predicted using crystal structure searches, with a hydrogen content between 4.0--5.75 hydrogens per cation, that is enthalpically metastable on the convex hull. We demonstrate a tailored approach to changing hydrogen content using changes in x-ray fluence that is not accessible using conventional synthesis methods, and reveals a new paradigm in metastable chemical physics.

Abstract:Abstract Further increasing the critical temperature and/or decreasing the stabilized pressure are the general hopes for the hydride superconductors. Inspired by the low stabilized pressure associated with Ce 4 f electrons in superconducting cerium superhydride and the high critical temperature in yttrium superhydride, we carry out seven independent runs to synthesize yttrium-cerium alloy hydrides. The synthetic process is examined by the Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction measurements. The superconductivity is obtained from the observed zero-resistance state with the detected onset critical temperatures in the range of 97-141 K. The upper critical field towards 0 K at pressure of 124 GPa is determined to be between 56 and 78 T by extrapolation of the results of the electrical transport measurements at applied magnetic fields. The analysis of the structural data and theoretical calculations suggest that the phase of Y 0.5 Ce 0.5 H 9 in hexagonal structure with the space group of P 6 3 / m m c is stable in the studied pressure range. These results indicate that alloying superhydrides indeed can maintain relatively high critical temperature at relatively modest pressures accessible by laboratory conditions.

Abstract:In Nat Commun 13, 3194 (2022) [1], Minkov et al. reported magnetization measurements on hydrides under pressure that claimed to find a diamagnetic signal below a critical temperature demonstrating the existence of superconductivity. Here we present an analysis of raw data recently released [2] by the authors of [1] that shows that the measured data do not support their claim that the samples exhibit a diamagnetic response indicative of superconductivity. We also point out that Ref. [1] in its original form omitted essential information that resulted in presentation of a distorted picture of reality, and that important information on transformations performed on measured data remains undisclosed. Our analysis also calls into question the conclusions of Minkov et al's trapped flux experiments reported in Nat. Phys. (2023) [3] as supporting superconductivity in these materials. This work together with earlier work implies that there is no magnetic evidence for the existence of high-temperature superconductivity in hydrides under pressure.

Abstract:The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in compressed hydrides has reignited the long-standing quest for room-temperature superconductors. However, the synthesis of superconducting hydrides under moderate pressure and identification of crucial factors that affect their stability remain challenges. Here, we predicted the ternary clathrate phases of LaThH12 with potential superconductivity under high pressures, and specifically proposed a novel R-3c-LaThH12 phase exhibiting a remarkable Tc of 54.95 K at only 30 GPa to address these confusions. Our first-principles studies uncover that the high-Tc of Pm-3m and Cmmm-LaThH12 phases were induced by the strong electron-phonon coupling driven by the synergy of electron–phonon matrix element and phonon softening caused by Fermi surface nesting. Importantly, we demonstrate the dual effects of enhanced ionic bonding and expanded orbital hybridization between Th-6f and H-sp3 orbitals during depressurization are primary factors governing the dynamic stability of R-3c-LaThH12 at low-pressures. Our findings offer crucial insights into the underlying mechanisms governing low-pressure stability and provide guidance for experimental efforts aimed at realizing hydrogen-based superconductors with both low synthesis pressures and high-Tc

Abstract:A comprehensive study of the vortex phases and vortex dynamics is presented for a recently discovered high-temperature superconductor YH$_6$ with T$_C$ (onset) of 215 K under pressure of 200 GPa.Thermal activation energy (U$_0$) is derived in the framework of thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) theory. The activation energy yields a power law dependence U$_0$ $\propto$ H$^\alpha$ on magnetic field with a possible crossover at a field around 8-10 Tesla. Furthermore, we have depicted the vortex phase transition from vortex-glass to vortex-liquid state according to the vortex-glass theory. Finally, vortex phase diagram is constructed for the first time for superhydrides. Very high estimated values of flux flow barriers U$_0$(H) = 1.5-7*10$^4$ K together with high crossover fields makes YH$_6$ a rather outstanding superconductor as compared to most cuprates and iron-based systems. The Ginzburg number for YH$_6$ Gi = 3-7*10$^{-3}$ indicates that thermal fluctuations are not so strong and cannot broaden superconducting transitions in weak magnetic fields.

Abstract:Following the recent report by Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. (2023) of near-ambient superconductivity in nitrogen-doped lutetium trihydride (LuH3-{\delta}N{\epsilon}), significant debate has emerged surrounding the composition and interpretation of the observed sharp resistance drop. Here, we meticulously revisit these claims through comprehensive characterization and investigations. We definitively identify the reported material as lutetium dihydride (LuH2), resolving the ambiguity surrounding its composition. Under similar conditions (270-295 K and 1-2 GPa), we replicate the reported sharp decrease in electrical resistance with a 30% success rate, aligning with Dasenbrock-Gammon et al.'s observations. However, our extensive investigations reveal this phenomenon to be a novel, pressure-induced metal-to-metal transition intrinsic to LuH2, distinct from superconductivity. Intriguingly, nitrogen doping exerts minimal impact on this transition. Our work not only elucidates the fundamental properties of LuH2 and LuH3 but also critically challenges the notion of superconductivity in these lutetium hydride systems. These findings pave the way for future research on lutetium hydride systems while emphasizing the crucial importance of rigorous verification in claims of ambient temperature superconductivity.

Abstract:Superconductivity in highly-pressurized hydrides became primary direction for the exploration of fundamental upper limit for the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, after Drozdov et al (Nature 2015, 525, 73) discovered superconducting state with $T_c=203 K$ in highly-compressed sulphur hydride. To date several dozens of high-temperature superconducting polyhydrides have been discovered. In addition, recently, it was reported that highly-compressed titanium and scandium exhibit record-high $T_c$ (up to 36 K), which is by manifold exceeded $T_c=9.2 K$ of niobium, which is the record high-$T_c$ ambient pressure metallic superconductor. Rev. B 2022), $TaH_3$ (He et al, Chinese Phys. Lett. 2023), $LaBeH_8$ (Song et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 2023), and black (Li et al, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. 2018) and violet (Wu et al, arXiv 2023) phosphorous, to reveal the nonadiabaticity strength constant, $T_{\theta}/T_F$ (where $T_{\theta}$ is the Debye temperature, and $T_F$ the Fermi temperature) in these superconductors. The analysis showed that ${\delta}$-phase of titanium and black phosphorous exhibit the $T_{\theta}/T_F$ which are nearly identical to ones associated in A15 superconductors, while studied hydrides and violet phosphorous exhibit the constants in the same ballpark with $H_3S$ and $LaH_{10}$.
