Abstract:The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) has been transferred to virtual reality (TSST-VR) previously. Meta-analyses by Helminen et al. (2019) confirmed virtual stress induction paradigms to reliably induce stress though effect sizes of cortisol responsivity consistently undercut in-persons applications. However, Helminen et al. (2019) identified immersivity of the specific paradigm to moderate effect sizes: immersive paradigms were shown to produce larger effect sizes than non-immersive paradigms. We increased perceived immersivity of the Open TSST-VR (von Dawans et al., 2022) to enhance resulting subjective stress and cortisol reactivity. We investigated in how far exposition to virtual reality prior to the Open TSST-VR might increase feelings of immersion by means of priming / enhanced sensory-perceptual, and mental readiness for the virtual environment. In a 2 ×2 factorial design, participants first completed (a) a sensorimotor game in virtual reality, or (b) a comparable game in the real world. Subsequently, participants either underwent (i) the stress version of the Open TSST-VR, or (ii) a placebo version of the Open TSST-VR (pTSST-VR). At the time point of abstract submission, we are still in the process of data collection. Data collection procedures and analyses are preregistered (OSF). Results will be presented at the conference. Publication will adhere to open data policies. Our study will clarify in how far it is possible to increase stress reactivity towards the TSST-VR by enhancing immersivity. While advantages of the TSST-VR over its in- person application are obvious, reported patterns of lowered stress reactivity may represent a target for further improvement.

Comparison of the Perceived Stress Reactivity Scale with physiological and self-reported stress responses during ecological momentary assessment and during participation in a virtual reality version of the Trier Social Stress Test

Abstract:Valid approaches to conveniently measure stress reactivity are needed due to the growing evidence of its health-impairing effects. This study examined whether the Perceived Stress Reactivity Scale (PSRS) predicts cardiovascular and psychological responses to psychosocial stressors during daily life and during a virtual reality (VR) Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Medical students answered a standardized baseline questionnaire to assess perceived stress reactivity by the PSRS. The PSRS asks participants to rate the intensity of their typical affective responses to common stressors during daily life. They were further asked to participate in a VR-TSST and in an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) over a period of three consecutive workdays during daily life. Blood pressure and self-reported stress were repeatedly, heart rate variability (HRV) continuously measured during the VR-TSST and EMA. Furthermore, participants repeatedly assessed task demands, task control and social conflict during the EMA. Data was analysed using multilevel analysis and multiple linear regression. Results indicate that the PSRS moderates associations between blood pressure (but not HRV) and demands and control during daily life. Furthermore, the PSRS directly predicted self-reported stress, but did not moderate associations between self-reported stress and demands, control and social conflict. The PSRS did not predict physiological and self-reported stress responses to the VR-TSST. This study partly confirmed convergent validity of the PSRS to stress reactivity in daily life. Furthermore, the lack of association between the PSRS and stress responses to the VR-TSST calls for future studies to search for reliable and valid ways to assess stress reactivity.

Abstract:Stress contributes to transdiagnostic morbidity and mortality across a wide range of physical and mental health problems. VR tasks have been validated as stressors with robust effect sizes for VR-based stressors to evoke stress across the most common autonomic and adrenocortical stress biomarkers. However, meta-analytic validation of VR stressors have resulted in inconsistent logic: why should something that isn't real evoke a very real suite of stress responses? This review posits that conceptually addressing this question requires differentiating a cause, "stressor", from effects, "stress". Stress comprises a series of well-delineated perturbations in biological systems, such as autonomic and adrenocortical biomarkers in response to stressors. Despite their ubiquity, decades of literature have back-calculated stressor intensity based on the magnitude of a stress response. This causal directionality is not logical, yet remains pervasive because seemingly objective stress indices have generated a wealth of findings showing how stress gets under the skin and skull. This has created challenges for providing clear guidance and strategies to measure acute stressor intensity. Binary thinking about whether something is (not) real has stifled advances in understanding how to measure the dosage of a stressful environment. As a function of being programmed, individualizable, and titrated, virtual reality (VR) based stressors offer the field a platform for quantifying the dose of a stressor and generating reliable dose-response curves. This also raises the possibility to safely and ethically integrate psychosocial stressor administration into clinical and therapeutic settings. For example, Social Evaluative Threat experiments effectively trigger a stress response both in a laboratory setting and in built environments, while also upholding hard-fought trust and rapport with care providers. By focusing attention on the measurement of the stressor, VR paradigms can advance tangible understanding of stressors themselves and the pathways to the stress response.

Abstract:Background Virtual agents and avatars are becoming increasingly prevalent in our daily lives, yet little is known about their effects on the physiological stress response. In this study we aimed to investigate the impact of agent-feedback on participants’ stress response in the Virtual Reality Stroop Room (VRSR). Methods Twenty-five participants (11 women; mean age = 23.32 years, SD = 3.30 years) in three groups (audio, video, no feedback) performed the Stroop task in the VRSR. In the feedback conditions a virtual agent provided negative performance feedback at standardized times, while participants were informed that it was given by a confederate. Measures included salivary alpha amylase (sAA) and cortisol at five time-points and questionnaires assessing the believability of the feedback entity. Results For sAA the main effect of time was significant (F = 4,87, p = 0.001). Although visual inspection suggests a difference between the feedback conditions and the no-feedback condition regarding sAA, neither the effect of condition (F = 2.97, p = 0.09), nor the interaction (F = 0.85, p = 0.50) was significant. There was no significant effect regarding cortisol (all effects n.s.). Only 8 out of 17 people who received feedback believed that it was real and related to their performance. Conclusion The study was undertaken to test the feasibility of the VRSR as a research paradigm. Results indicate that feedback may influence the physiological stress response, although the small sample size limits these findings to assumptions. Further, the believability of the feedback needs to be improved.

Abstract:Introduction: Although, attempts to apply virtual reality (VR) in mental healthcare are rapidly increasing, it is still unclear whether VR relaxation can reduce stress more than conventional biofeedback. Methods: Participants consisted of 83 healthy adult volunteers with high stress, which was defined as a score of 20 or more on the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10). This study used an open, randomized, crossover design with baseline, stress, and relaxation phases. During the stress phase, participants experienced an intentionally generated shaking VR and serial-7 subtraction. For the relaxation phase, participants underwent a randomly assigned relaxation session on day 1 among VR relaxation and biofeedack, and the other type of relaxation session was applied on day 2. We compared the StateTrait Anxiety Inventory-X1 (STAI-X1), STAI-X2, the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), and physiological parameters including heart rate variability (HRV) indexes in the stress and relaxation phases. Results: A total of 74 participants were included in the analyses. The median age of participants was 39 years, STAI-X1 was 47.27 (SD = 9.92), and NRS was 55.51 (SD = 24.48) at baseline. VR and biofeedback significantly decreased STAI-X1 and NRS from the stress phase to the relaxation phase, while the difference of effect between VR and biofeedback was not significant. However, there was a significant difference in electromyography, LF/HF ratio, LF total, and NN50 between VR relaxation and biofeedback Conclusion: VR relaxation was effective in reducing subjectively reported stress in individuals with high stress.

The impact of virtual reality scenes on stress response characteristics of individuals with different personality traits

Abstract:Virtual reality based physical stress (VRPS) paradigms could eliminate the influence of social factors on participants, and it may be a desirable tool to explore the impact of personality traits on stress levels. In this study, we attempt to explore the effects of VRPS on stress response among individuals with different personality traits. Forty male participants with an average age of 22.79 ± 0.41 years were divided into two groups based on Harm Avoidance (HA) scores of Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ), referred to as the Low-HA group and the High-HA group. The stress levels of the participants were assessed using salivary α-amylase (sAA) activity and heart rate variability (HRV) indices pre- and post-stress. The influence of personality traits on stress response among different groups was analyzed. VRPS significantly affected the sAA activity and HRV indicators of both groups. During and after stress, there were significant differences in sAA activity and HRV indicators between the two groups. The sAA levels and HRV indices of the Low-HA group were lower than those of the High-HA group. Furthermore, sAA levels and HRV indices were correlated with the scores of TPQ. VRPS scenarios elicit different stress responses on individuals with different harm avoidance personality traits. Stress evaluation based on VR scenarios presents potential in personality trait assessments, particularly for distinguishing between individuals with low and high HA tendencies.

Abstract:This research report describes the development of a virtual reality (VR) laboratory stressor to study the effects of exposure to stressful events. The aim of the research was to develop a VR simulation that would evoke stressor responses at a level that was tolerable for participants. Veterans with and without warzone-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were presented with VR simulations of combat stressors. There was one complaint of feeling hot during simulations but no incidents of simulator sickness. Participants denied experiencing the simulations as overly distressing, and there were no reports of any distress or problems related to study participation when they were contacted two weeks after the VR challenge. Simulations elicited moderate levels of anxiety and mild levels of dissociation that were significantly greater in Veterans with PTSD. Simulations were less successful in eliciting differential heart rate reactivity and stress hormone secretion, though history of civilian trauma exposure was associated with elevated heart rates during the second simulation. The study demonstrated that the VR paradigm was feasible and tolerable and that it holds promise as a new method with which to conduct controlled laboratory research on the effects of exposure to stressful events.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to develop and use a virtual reality game as a tool to assess the effects of realistic stress on the behavioral and physiological responses of participants. The game is based on a popular Steam game called Keep Talking Nobody Explodes, where the player collaborates with another person to defuse a bomb. Varying levels of difficulties in solving a puzzle and time pressures will result in different stress levels that can be measured in terms of errors, response time lengths, and other physiological measurements. The game was developed using 3D programming tools including Blender and virtual reality development kit (VRTK). To measure response times accurately, we added LSL (Lab Stream Layer) Markers to collect and synchronize physiological signals, behavioral data, and the timing of game events. We recorded Electrocardiogram (ECG) data during gameplay to assess heart rate and heart-rate variability (HRV) that have been shown as reliable indicators of stress. Our empirical results showed that heart rate increased significantly while HRV reduced significantly when the participants under high stress, which are consistent with the prior mainstream stress research. We further experimented with other tools to enhance communication between two players under adverse conditions and found that an automatic speech recognition software effectively enhanced the communication between the players by displaying keywords into the player's headset that lead to the facilitation of finding the solution of the puzzles or modules. This VR game framework is publicly available in Github and allows researchers to measure and synchronize other physiological signals such as electroencephalogram, electromyogram, and pupillometry.
The effectiveness and user experience of a biofeedback intervention program for stress management supported by virtual reality and mobile technology: a randomized controlled study

Abstract:Abstract Background Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) can be used for stress management. Recent feasibility studies suggest that delivering HRV-BF in virtual reality (VR) is associated with better user experience (UX) and might yield more beneficial changes in HRV than two-dimensional screens. The effectiveness of a VR-supported HRV-BF intervention program has, however, not been investigated yet. Methods In this study, 87 healthy women and men were assigned to a VR-supported HRV-BF intervention (INT; $$n=44$$ n = 44 ) or a wait-list control (WLC; $$n=43$$ n = 43 ) group. The INT came to the lab for four weekly HRV-BF sessions in VR using a head-mounted display. Between lab sessions, participants were asked to perform breathing exercises without biofeedback supported by a mobile application. Stress-related psychological and psychophysiological outcomes were assessed pre- and post-intervention and at a follow-up four weeks after the intervention in both groups. A psychosocial stress test was conducted post-intervention to investigate changes in stress reactivity. UX was assessed after each HRV-BF session in the INT. Results Analysis revealed that LF increased significantly from pre- to post-, whereas pNN50 increased and chronic stress decreased significantly from pre-intervention to follow-up in the INT compared to the WLC. Anxiety and mental fatigue decreased significantly, while mindfulness and health-related quality of life increased significantly from pre- to post- and from pre-intervention to follow-up in the INT compared to the WLC (all small effects). The two groups did not differ in their stress reactivity post-intervention. As for UX in the INT, the degree of feeling autonomous concerning technology adoption significantly decreased over time. Competence, involvement, and immersion, however, increased significantly from the first to the last HRV-BF session, while hedonic motivation significantly peaked in the second session and then gradually returned to first-session levels. Conclusions This HRV-BF intervention program, supported by VR and mobile technology, was able to significantly improve stress indicators and stress-related symptoms and achieved good to very good UX. Future studies should control for potential placebo effects and emphasize higher degrees of personalization and adaptability to increase autonomy and, thereby, long-term health and well-being. These findings may serve as a first step towards future HRV-BF applications of cutting-edge, increasingly accessible technologies, such as wearables, VR, and smartphones, in the service of mental health and healthcare. Trial registration The study was registered retrospectively as a clinical trial on ISRCTN registry (ISRCTN11331226, 26 May 2023).
Completion arteriography in paramalleolar bypasses: effect of configurational changes, with special reference to spasm, on long-term outcome.

Abstract:PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to ascertain the durability of paramalleolar bypasses and elucidate the effect of configurational changes, especially spasm, seen on the completion arteriography upon the outcome. DESIGN Retrospective study. SETTING University hospital experience. PATIENTS AND METHODS Nineteen paramalleolar bypass operations in sixteen patients performed between April 1988 and March 1995 were studied retrospectively. Reversed saphenous vein grafts were used in all cases. One patient required an additional microvascular free flap transfer to cover a foot amputation stump. Seventeen completion arteriograms were obtained. Patients were followed for an average of 37 months. RESULTS One patient died in hospital, giving a hospital death rate of 5.9%. Two grafts failed immediately and could not be salvaged. Inadvertent perforation of one graft required partial replacement with a polytetrafluoroethylene graft; it eventually failed after 42 months. There were no other graft failures during follow-up. Nine completion arteriograms showed spastic change of the run-off artery, but this change had disappeared on repeat angiograms obtained before discharge. CONCLUSION Spasm of run-off artery is a frequent finding in distal bypass surgery and adversely affects the immediate outcome. Heparinization during the first 24 hours after surgery may reduce the consequences of spasm, and long-term patency can be expected providing that the whole graft consists of autogenous vein.
Revisiting effects of teacher characteristics on physiological and psychological stress: a virtual reality study

Abstract:Identifying personal characteristics associated with teachers' stress is a longstanding research goal with important implications for practice. The present work revisits the effects of individual characteristics in terms of neuroticism, classroom management self-efficacy, and cognitive (reasoning) abilities on stress using virtual reality (VR). Relying on a sample of 56 German pre-service teachers (Mage = 22.73, SDage = 4.93; 50.9% females), we capitalized on a VR classroom environment that allowed the integration of experimental control and authentic teaching situations, where pre-service teachers responded to the disruptive behaviors of the student avatars. We focused on stress responses in terms of psychological stress (self-reported stress) assessed after the VR session, and physiological stress (heart rate) assessed during the VR session. A total of 30 (26) participants was assigned to a condition with higher (lower) levels of disruptive student behavior, referred to as higher and lower complexity condition, respectively. Results from linear mixed-effects models revealed that neuroticism positively predicted psychological and physiological stress responses in pre-service teachers, whereas classroom management self-efficacy and cognitive (reasoning) abilities were not significantly related to stress responses. Level of complexity and the interaction between complexity and individual characteristics did not have an effect. This study underlines the value of VR as a tool for psychological research and contributes to existing knowledge on teacher characteristics and stress.
Distinguishing Visual Fatigue, Mental Workload and Acute Stress in Immersive Virtual Reality with Physiological Data: pre-test results

Abstract:Virtual Reality Induced Symptoms and Effects (VRISE) can arise. Experimental paradigms are heterogeneous to assess them, and var-ious factors can induce physiological variations. Therefore, we developed a Stroop task to study and distinguish VRISE. We use eye tracking, ECG, EDA, and VRSQ, NASA-TLX, and STAI-6 questionnaires. Pre-tests have been conducted with 6 subjects exposed to 4 experimental conditions: control, dual task, stressful, and stere-oscopy. Subjects report different subjective visual fatigue and mental workload but not stress between conditions. Several physiological features are different between conditions. A VRISE detector can be envisioned based on physiological data and questionnaires as an index.
Effects of the Visual Character of Transitional Spaces on Human Stress Recovery in a Virtual Reality Environment

Abstract:As people's levels of stress increase with the complexity of contemporary urban life, the stress healing agenda in built environments has become more critical than ever. Previous research has demonstrated that linear and nonlinear shapes in the environment have an impact on human stress recovery. However, to date, most studies have focused on indoor and outdoor spaces, while research on transitional spaces is still limited. Transitional spaces connect the interior with the exterior and are ubiquitous in the city, such as plazas, open cafes, and urban corridors. We hypothesize that curved and linear environments affect human stress recovery differently in transitional spaces. To test this hypothesis, virtual reality (VR) technology and experiments were conducted with 40 participants. At the end of the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), participants were randomly assigned to four VR environments to test which environment is more effective in stress recovery for humans. Participants' physiological data, including heart rate and blood pressure, were measured by bio-monitoring sensors. The psychological data were tested by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). In general, the resulting data indicate that the curved environment is more effective than the linear environment for the recovery of human stress in transitional spaces.
Examining the applicability of virtual battle space for stress management training in military personnel—A validation study

Abstract:Military personnel are often exposed to high levels of both physical and psychological challenges in their work environment and therefore it is important to be trained on how to handle stressful situations. The primary aim of this study was to examine whether military‐specific virtual battle space (VBS) scenarios could elicit a physiological and subjective stress response in healthy military personnel, as compared to that of a virtual reality height exposure (VR‐HE) stress task that has shown to reliably increase stress levels. Twenty participants engaged in two VBS scenarios and the VR‐HE during separate sessions, while measurements of heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), respiration rate, and subjective stress levels were collected. Contrary to our initial expectations, analysis revealed that neither of the VBS scenarios induced a significant stress response, as indicated by stable HR, HRV, and low subjective stress levels. However, the VR‐HE task did elicit a significant physiological stress response, evidenced by increased HR and HRV changes, aligning with previous research findings. Moreover, no discernible alterations were detected in cognitive performance subsequent to these stressors. These results suggest that the current VBS scenarios, despite their potential, may not be effective for stress‐related training activities within military settings. The absence of a significant stress response in the VBS conditions points to the need for more immersive and engaging scenarios. By integrating interactive and demanding elements, as well as physical feedback systems and real‐time communication, VBS training might better mimic real‐world stressors and improve stress resilience in military personnel. The findings of this study have broader implications for stress research and training, suggesting the need for scenario design improvements in virtual training environments to effectively induce stress and improve stress management across various high‐stress professions.

Abstract:Stress is a part of everyday life which can be counteracted by evoking the relaxation response via nature scenes presented using immersive virtual reality (VR). The aim of this study was to determine which sensory aspect of immersive VR intervention is responsible for the greatest relaxation response. We compared four conditions: auditory and visual combined (audiovisual), auditory only, visual only, and no artificial sensory input. Physiological changes in heart rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure were recorded, while participants reported their preferred condition and awareness of people, noise, and light in the real-world. Over the duration of the stimulation, participants had the lowest heart rate during the audiovisual and visual only conditions. They had the steadiest decrease in respiration rate and the lowest blood pressure during the audiovisual condition, compared to the other conditions, indicating the greatest relaxation. Moreover, ratings of awareness indicated that participants reported being less aware of their surroundings (i.e., people, noise, light, real environment) during the audiovisual condition versus the other conditions (p < 0.001), with a preference for audiovisual inputs. Overall, the use of audiovisual VR stimulation is more effective at inducing a relaxation response compared to no artificial sensory inputs, or the independent inputs.

Exposure to virtual nature: the impact of different immersion levels on skin conductance level, heart rate, and perceived relaxation

Abstract:Abstract It is generally accepted that natural environments reduce stress and improve mood. Since access to natural environments is sometimes limited, virtual natural environments, especially monoscopic 360° nature videos, offer a viable alternative. However, it remains unclear whether presenting monoscopic 360° nature videos via a head-mounted display (HMD) or a PC monitor results in larger relaxation effects. Therefore, this study examined whether a monoscopic 360° beach video presented with an HMD is significantly more relaxing than the same video presented via a PC screen, or no video at all (control condition), in altering skin conductance level (SCL), heart rate (HR), and perceived relaxation. Overall, 102 adults (40.2% females, age range 19–62 years) participated in a counterbalanced, randomized, controlled, within-subject experiment. All participants were subjected to three stressors comprising different mental arithmetic tasks, followed by three different recovery phases (HMD, PC, control). For SCL, the results showed a significantly larger decrease in the HMD and PC than in the control condition, but no significant differences between the HMD and PC condition. For HR, there were no significant differences between the recovery conditions. However, the HMD condition was rated significantly more relaxing than the other conditions, with no significant differences between the PC and control condition. Exploratory analyses showed that these results were not moderated by the participants’ age, gender, or technology anxiety. Overall, the psychophysiological results showed no significant benefit favoring the HMD over PC condition, although the self-reported relaxation ratings did. Future studies are warranted to clarify this divergence.

Exploring the Effects of VR Activities on Stress Relief: A Comparison of Sitting-in-Silence, VR Meditation, and VR Smash Room

Abstract:In our lives, we encounter various stressors that may cause negative mental and bodily reactions to make us feel frustrated, angry, or irritated. Effective methods to manage or reduce stress and anxiety are essential for a healthy life, and several stress-management approaches are found to be useful for stress relief, such as meditation, taking a rest, walking around nature, or even breaking things in a smash room. Previous research has revealed that certain experiences in virtual reality (VR) are effective for reducing stress as traditional real-world methods. However, it is still unclear how the stress relief effects are associated with other factors like individual user profile in terms of different treatment activities. In this paper, we report our findings from a formal user study that investigates the effects of two virtual activities: (1) VR Meditation and (2) VR Smash Room experience, compared with a traditional Sitting-in-Silence method. Our results show that VR Meditation has a better stress relief effect compared to VR Smash Room and Sitting-in-Silence, and the effects of the treatments are correlated with the participants' personalities. We discuss the findings and implications addressing potential benefits/impacts of different stress-relief activities in VR.

Combining stress inoculation with virtual reality simulation training of malignant hyperthermia

Abstract:Background: Limited research has been conducted on how healthcare simulation can mitigate clinician stress. Stress exposure training (SET) has been shown to decrease stress's impact on performance. Combining SET with virtual reality (VR) simulation training has not yet been explored in the context of stress inoculation. The primary purpose of this pilot study was to determine if a VR module could induce stress. The secondary purpose was to determine if repeated exposure to stressors could decrease stress response in a simulated environment. Methods: Medical students were recruited to partake in VR simulation modules aimed at treatment of malignant hyperthermia (MH). Those in the SET group were exposed to stressful stimuli during training modules, while those in the Control group were not. Both groups then completed a Test Module with the presence of stressful stimuli. Objective and subjective indicators of stress were measured after each module. Results: Both groups indicated increases in perceived stress and module stressfulness after Training Module 1 and decreases after Training Module 2. After the Test Module, the Control group experienced significant elevation in perceived stress (p = .05), and the SET group had a significant decrease in perceived module stressfulness (p < .05). Both groups had a decrease in perceived competence after Training Module 1 (p < .001) and an increase after Training Module 2 (p < .001), with the SET group having significant elevation after the Test Module (p < .01). Both groups found the VR module to be feasible as a teaching tool. Objectively, the SET group showed an upward trend in electrodermal activity (EDA) from the Tutorial to Test Modules (p < .05), with the Control group showing a decrease after Training Module 2 (p = .05) and an increase after the Test Module (p < .01). Conclusions: A VR module targeting treatment of MH successfully induced stress and was regarded favorably by participants. Those in the SET group perceived less stress and more competence after the Test Module than those in the Control. Findings suggest that repeated exposure to stressors through VR may desensitize participants from future stress in a simulated environment.

Abstract:The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) and its version for groups (TSST-G) are the gold standard for inducing acute psychosocial stress in human experimental settings and have been used in numerous studies since the early 1990s. The TSST and the TSST-G lead to effects on different physiological and psychological markers, such as salivary cortisol, anxiety, and emotional states. These effects were assessed with quantitative methods comparing pre-test and post-test measures with statistical analyses. But to date, no qualitative analyses have been conducted to examine the meaningful experience of participants during the TSST and the TSST-G. This study is the first to conduct qualitative investigations to further clarify the stressful experience of participants confronted with these procedures. Preliminary results showed as expected that the TSST and the TSST-G effectively induced psychosocial stress, with cortisol levels, cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, and arousal increases, and with pleasure and dominance decreases. At the qualitative level, the results evidenced that the two theoretically stressful components of the TSST and the TSST-G, namely social-evaluative threat and uncontrollability, were experienced as stress-inducing by the participants. Two case studies confirmed these findings. But the results also showed on one hand that psychosocial stress is a dynamic phenomenon, with important fluctuations throughout the tasks (mainly for the TSST-G); and on the other hand that despite the similar physiological and psychological responses between the TSST and the TSST-G evidenced by the literature, the experience of the participants was both similar and specific. Use of a qualitative method allowed us to provide a complementary point of view to understand the meaningful experience of participants during these stressful procedures, apprehending the dynamic of the subjective stress experience without disrupting it.
