Abstract:Abstract. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) is a fundamental physiological variable for research in the ecological, agricultural, and global change fields. In this study, we produced a 35-year (1984–2018) high-resolution (3 h, 10 km) global gridded PAR dataset using an effective physical-based model. The main inputs of the model were the latest International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) H-series cloud products, MERRA-2 aerosol data, ERA5 surface routine variables, and MODIS and CLARRA-2 albedo products. Our gridded PAR product was evaluated against surface observations measured at seven experimental stations of the SURFace RADiation budget network (SURFRAD), 42 experimental stations of the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), and 38 experimental stations of the Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN). Instantaneous PAR was validated against SURFRAD and NEON data; mean bias errors (MBE) and root mean square errors (RMSE) were, on average, 5.8 W m−2 and 44.9 W m−2, respectively, and correlation coefficient (R) was 0.94 at the 10 km scale. When upscaled to 30 km, the errors were markedly reduced. Daily PAR was validated against SURFRAD, NEON, and CERN data, and the RMSEs were 13.2 W m−2, 13.1 W m−2, and 19.6 W m−2, respectively at the 10 km scale. The RMSEs were slightly reduced when upscaled to 30 km. Compared with the well-known global satellite-based PAR product of the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES), our PAR product was found to be a more accurate dataset with higher resolution. Abstract:Satellite remotely sensed fraction of photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR) products are widely used in land-surface monitoring and modeling, especially for estimating global terrestrial photosynthetic activity through light use efficiency (LUE) models. PAR absorbed by active chlorophyll (APARchl) is directly linked to vegetation photosynthesis and can be used to estimate ecosystem gross primary production (GPP). Previous studies have demonstrated that solar induced chlorophyll fluorescence has very tight relationship with APARchl at various ecosystems. Therefore, the solar angle normalized SIF (nSIF) is directly related to the fraction of PAR absorbed by chlorophyll (FPARchl). This paper intercompared six space FPAR products from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS), Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR), Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) and Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI). Their potential relationships with FPARchl were indirectly evaluated with both spaceborne (Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2, OCO-2 and TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument, TROPOMI) and airborne (Chlorophyll Fluorescence Imaging Spectrometer, CFIS) nSIF data as well as in situ GPP measurements. Our results show that these FPAR products are different in terms of amplitudes and seasonal variations across biomes. Among six FPAR products, OLCI FPAR shows the best relationships with TROPOMI nSIF740, OCO-2 nSIF757, and CFIS nSIF755. The coefficient of determination (R2) for the relationship between OLCI FPAR and TROPOMI nSIF740 is 0.79 ± 0.17 on a global average. APAR calculated from OLCI also exhibits the best relationship (R2 = 0.79) with in situ GPP over 25 flux towers.
Spatiotemporally consistent global dataset of the GIMMS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (PKU GIMMS NDVI) from 1982 to 2020

In this study, we presented a machine learning model that employed massive high-quality and global-wide Landsat NDVI samples and a data consolidation method to generate a new version of the GIMMS NDVI product, i.e., PKU GIMMS NDVI (1982−2020), based on AVHRR and Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. A total of 3.6 million Landsat NDVI samples that well spread across the globe were extracted for vegetation biomes in all seasons. The PKU GIMMS NDVI exhibits higher accuracy than its predecessor (GIMMS NDVI3g) in terms of R2 (0.975 over 0.942), mean absolute error (MAE: 0.033 over 0.074), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE: 9 % over 20 %). Notably, PKU GIMMS NDVI effectively eliminates the evident orbital drift and sensor degradation effects in tropical areas. The consolidated PKU GIMMS NDVI has a high temporal consistency with MODIS NDVI in describing vegetation trends (R2 = 0.962, MAE = 0.032, and MAPE = 6.5 %). The PKU GIMMS NDVI product can potentially provide a more solid data basis for global change studies. The theoretical framework that employs Landsat data samples can facilitate the generation of remote sensing products for other land surface parameters.

The consolidated PKU GIMMS NDVI has a high consistency with MODIS NDVI in terms of pixel value (R-2 = 0.956, RMSE = 0.048, MAE = 0.034, and MAPE = 6.0 %) and global vegetation trend ( yr(-1)). The PKU GIMMS NDVI product can potentially provide a more solid data basis for global change studies. The theoretical framework that employs Landsat data samples can facilitate the generation of remote sensing products for other land surface parameters.

Abstract:Brief Introduction: The PKU GIMMS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index product (PKU GIMMS NDVI, version 1.2) provides spatiotemporally consistent global NDVI data in half-month and 1/12° from 1982 to 2022. It is created to address the major uncertainties presented in current global long-term NDVI products, i.e., the effects of NOAA satellite orbital drift and AVHRR sensor degradation. The PKU GIMMS NDVI was generated based on biome-specific BPNN models that employed GIMMS NDVI3g product and 3.6 million high-quality global Landsat NDVI samples. It was then consolidated with the MODIS NDVI (MOD13C1) to extend the temporal coverage to 2022 via a pixel-wise Random Forests fusion method. The PKU GIMMS NDVI exhibits overall high accuracy evaluated by Landsat NDVI samples. Besides, it efficiently eliminated the effects of satellite orbital drift and sensor degradation and presents a good temporal consistency with MODIS NDVI in terms of pixel value and global vegetation trend. It could potentially provide a more solid data basis for global change studies. Here we provide two versions of PKU GIMMS NDVI for download, one solely based on AVHRR data (1982−2015) and the other consolidated with the MODIS NDVI (1982−2022). Evaluation of MODIS, POLDER and CYCLOPES global FPAR products

Abstract:Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FPAR), determined from remote sensing data, can vary with the spatial resolution, the different retrieval algorithms and viewing angels of the used data. This paper aimed at evaluating MODIS, POLDER and CYCLOPE global FPAR products, and found that the MODIS FPAR was larger than CYCLOPES, and their difference ranged within 0.1~0.2, especially at the forest area where MODIS product always presented seasonal variation in this area while CYCLOPES products kept relatively stable. For other vegetation covers, their difference was less than 0.1. Furthermore, the comparison of MODIS and POLDER FPAR products shown that the MODIS FPAR was also larger than the POLDER and their difference was up to 0.1 to 0.2.
Global land surface 250 m 8 d fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR) product from 2000 to 2021

Abstract:The fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR) is a critical land surface variable for carbon cycle modeling and ecological monitoring. Several global FAPAR products have been released and have become widely used; however, spatiotemporal inconsistency remains a large issue for the current products, and their spatial resolutions and accuracies can hardly meet the user requirements. An effective solution to improve the spatiotemporal continuity and accuracy of FAPAR products is to take better advantage of the temporal information in the satellite data using deep learning approaches. In this study, the latest version (V6) of the FAPAR product with a 250 m resolution was generated from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) surface reflectance data and other information, as part of the Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS) product suite. In addition, it was aggregated to multiple coarser resolutions (up to 0.25 ∘ and monthly). Three existing global FAPAR products (MODIS Collection 6; GLASS V5; and PRoject for On-Board Autonomy–Vegetation, PROBA-V, V1) were used to generate the time-series training samples, which were used to develop a bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) model. Direct validation using high-resolution FAPAR maps from the Validation of Land European Remote sensing Instrument (VALERI) and ImagineS networks revealed that the GLASS V6 FAPAR product has a higher accuracy than PROBA-V, MODIS, and GLASS V5, with an R 2 value of 0.80 and root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) of 0.10–0.11 at the 250 m, 500 m, and 3 km scales, and a higher percentage (72 %) of retrievals for meeting the accuracy requirement of 0.1. Global spatial evaluation and temporal comparison at the AmeriFlux and National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) sites revealed that the GLASS V6 FAPAR has a greater spatiotemporal continuity and reflects the variations in the vegetation better than the GLASS V5 FAPAR. The higher quality of the GLASS V6 FAPAR is attributed to the ability of the Bi-LSTM model, which involves high-quality training samples and combines the strengths of the existing FAPAR products, as well as the temporal and spectral information from the MODIS surface reflectance data and other information. Estimation of Incident Photosynthetically Active Radiation from GOES Visible Imagery

Abstract:Incident photosynthetically active radiation ( PAR) is an important parameter for terrestrial ecosystem models. Because of its high temporal resolution, the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite ( GOES) observations are very suited to catch the diurnal variation of PAR. In this paper, a new method is developed to derive PAR using GOES data. What makes this new method distinct from the existing method is that it does not need external knowledge of atmospheric conditions. The new method retrieves both atmospheric and surface conditions using only at-sensor radiance through interpolation of time series of observations. Validations against ground measurement are carried out at four "FLUXNET" sites. The values of RMSE of estimated and ground-measured instantaneous PAR at the four sites are 130.71, 131.44, 141.16, and 190.22 mu mol m(-2) s(-1), respectively. At the four validation sites, the RMSE as the percentage of estimated mean PAR value are 9.52%, 13.01%, 13.92%, and 24.09%, respectively; the biases are -101.54, 16.56, 11.09, and 53.64 mu mol m(-2) s(-1), respectively. The independence of external atmospheric information enables this method to be applicable to many situations in which external atmospheric information is not available. In addition, topographic impacts on surface PAR are examined at the 1-km resolution at which PAR is retrieved using the GOES visible band data.
Mapping High-Resolution Incident Photosynthetically Active Radiation over Land from Polar-Orbiting and Geostationary Satellite Data

Abstract:Summary Incident PAR is needed to address a variety of scientiﬁ c questions in the ﬁ elds of solar energy, climate change, and agriculture and as input in hydrologic and biogeophysical models. This article sum-marizes various algorithms that estimate incident PAR from both polar-orbiting and geostationary satellite observations. However, high resolution PAR over land currently is not a standard satellite product. We generated this product over North America and China.Integration of multiple polar-orbiting satellite observations enables us to provide the high-accuracy daily-integrated PAR product required by most models and applications. This study also demonstrates that when relying only on one or two polar-orbit-ing satellites, the best strategy may be to combine polar-orbiting satellite data with geostationary satellite data in the same way that polar orbiting data are used to map PAR at high latitudes and geostationary satellite data at low latitudes. Abstract:Long-term global data sets of vegetation Leaf Area Index (LAI) and Fraction of Photosynthetically Active Radiation absorbed by vegetation (FPAR) are critical to monitoring global vegetation dynamics and for modeling exchanges of energy, mass and momentum between the land surface and planetary boundary layer. LAI and FPAR are also state variables in hydrological, ecological, biogeochemical and crop-yield models. The generation, evaluation and an example case study documenting the utility of 30-year long data sets of LAI and FPAR are described in this article. A neural network algorithm was first developed between the new improved third generation Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies (GIMMS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI3g) and best-quality Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LAI and FPAR products for the overlapping period 2000–2009. The trained neural network algorithm was then used to generate corresponding LAI3g and FPAR3g data sets with the following attributes: 15-day temporal frequency, 1/12 degree spatial resolution and temporal span of July 1981 to December 2011. The quality of these data sets for scientific research in other disciplines was assessed through (a) comparisons with field measurements scaled to the spatial resolution of the data products, (b) comparisons with broadly-used existing alternate satellite data-based products, (c) comparisons to plant growth limiting climatic variables in the northern latitudes and tropical regions, and (d) correlations of dominant modes of interannual variability with large-scale circulation anomalies such as the EI Niño-Southern Oscillation and Arctic Oscillation. These assessment efforts yielded results that attested to the suitability of these data sets for research use in other disciplines. The utility of these data sets is documented by comparing the seasonal profiles of LAI3g with profiles from 18 state-of-the-art Earth System Models: the models consistently overestimated the satellite-based estimates of leaf area and simulated delayed peak seasonal values in the northern latitudes, a result that is consistent with previous evaluations of similar models with ground-based data. The LAI3g and FPAR3g data sets can be obtained freely from the NASA Earth Exchange (NEX) website.

Abstract:Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FPAR) is the fraction of the incoming solar radiation in the Photosynthetically Active Radiation spectral region that is absorbed by a photosynthetic organism. This biophysical variable is directly related to the primary productivity of photosynthesis and some models use it to estimate the assimilation of carbon dioxide in vegetation. The solar radiation reaching to the canopy can be divided into direct radiation and diffuse radiation. The processes of two kinds of radiation are different. But a lot of retrieval models of FPAR did not consider this difference. In this paper, we established a FPAR inversion model which divided direct and diffuse FPAR. And MODIS LAI and surface albedo products were used as the model input data. And at the end of this paper, the inversion FPAR was verified with observation data and MODIS FPAR product.
A Framework to Assess the Potential Uncertainties of Three FPAR Products

Abstract:The remote sensing products of the fraction of photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR) are widely used in large‐scale terrestrial vegetation condition monitoring and ecological modeling. However, the validation and evaluation of these products are still insufficient due to limited ground measurements. A framework is proposed in this study that does not rely on ground FPAR observations to evaluate the potential uncertainties of three FPAR data sets over a large scale. Two independent methods, including a statistical method named extended triple colocation (ETC) and FPAR‐based gross primary production (GPP) comparative evaluation at the site level, are integrated. The framework was applied to three widely used FPAR products, including GLASS (Global Land Surface Satellite), GEOV2 (version 2 of the COPERNICUS 1‐km product), and MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), in China from 2001–2015. The root‐mean‐square error (RMSE) and correlation coefficient (R) based on the ETC method showed that at the national spatial scale, GEOV2‐FPAR had the highest precision (RMSEFPAR = 0.0367, RFPAR = 0.9012), followed by MODIS‐FPAR (RMSEFPAR = 0.0482, RFPAR = 0.8392) and GLASS‐FPAR (RMSEFPAR = 0.0536, RFPAR = 0.736). In particular, each FPAR data set was locally optimal over some regions. Using a light use efficiency model, GPP was calculated using these three FPAR data sets and other identical variables and parameters at 22 eddy flux sites. General coherent results were found in both GPP evaluation and site‐level ETC analysis of these three FPAR data sets. Therefore, we conclude that this framework is reliable and applicable in evaluating the potential uncertainties of FPAR.
Tracking the Seasonal and Inter-Annual Variations of Global Gross Primary Production During Last Four Decades Using Satellite Near-Infrared Reflectance Data.

Abstract:Terrestrial vegetation absorbs approximately 30% of the anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted into the atmosphere through photosynthesis (represented by gross primary productivity, GPP) and thus effectively mitigates global warming. However, large uncertainties still remain in the global GPP estimations and their long-termtrends. Here we used the satellite-based near-infrared reflectance (NIRv) as the proxy of GPP and generated a global long-term (1982-2018) GPP datasets (hereafter GPP(NIRv)). Analysis at the site-level showed that NIRv could accurately capture both the monthly and annual variations in GPP (R-2 = 0.71 and 0.74 respectively) at 104 flux sites. Upscaling the relationships between NIRv and GPP to the global scale, the global annual GPP was estimated to be 128.3 +/- 4.0 Pg C yr(-1) during the last four decades, which fell between the estimations from the machine-learning upscaling approach, light-use-efficiency (LUE) models and processed-based models. The seasonal variation of GPP(NIRv) was also consistent with those from flux sites and models. More importantly, the inter-annual trends in GPP(NIRv) during the last four decades were consistent with those from processed-based models across latitudes, which outperformed the other GPP products. This evidence suggested that the long-term GPP datasets derived from NIRv have better abilities to capture the seasonal and inter-annual variations of terrestrial GPP at the global scale. The long-term GPP(NIRv) product could be beneficial for the estimation of terrestrial carbon fluxes and for the projection of future climates. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
A Scaling-Based Method for the Rapid Retrieval of FPAR From Fine-Resolution Satellite Data in the Remote-Sensing Trend-Surface Framework

Abstract:Accurate estimation of the fine-resolution fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR) across broad spatial extents and long time periods requires efficient and applicable methods. The existing methods can hardly provide a balance between accuracy, simplicity, and transferability through space and time. Within the remote-sensing trend-surface conceptual framework, this article proposes a scaling-based method to efficiently retrieve FPAR from fine-resolution satellite data using coarse-resolution FPAR products as a reference. The method was particularly developed and applied to Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) FPAR product and Landsat imagery. First, necessary prior knowledge related to FPAR retrieval and scaling theories was used to explicitly linearize the complex relationship between MODIS FPAR and Landsat surface reflectance. Second, the explicit linear model for FPAR estimation was trained through one-pair image learning for each date to estimate FPAR from Landsat imagery in real time. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous cases were considered. The method was validated at ten selected worldwide sites from the Validation of Land European Remote Sensing Instruments (VALERI) program and derived an overall root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.133. A long time series of FPAR data set at the 30-m resolution was generated at the regional scale (approximately 2000 km<sup>2</sup>) for 13 years (2000–2012). The results were accurate (RMSE = 0.072) and MODIS-consistent, which were significantly better than those of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) downscaling-based and regression tree methods. The scaling-based method provides accurate, MODIS-consistent and spatially consistent FPAR estimates in real time, is highly transferrable through space and time, and allows for future extension of FPAR estimates to the era of the Landsat series satellites.

Abstract:A significant challenge in global change research is understanding how vegetation interacts with the environment to influence ecosystem gross primary productivity (GPP) through carbon assimilation. One emerging objective is to consistently predict GPP fluctuations worldwide by establishing a robust scaling relationship between GPP measured at flux towers and satellite spectral reflectance data. However, a major hurdle in achieving this goal is the discrepancy in spatial resolution between early satellite measurements and eddy flux measurements. By using a large set of growing season data covering 100 site-years in North and Central America, we explored the potential of transforming incident and reflected shortwave (R g ) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) measurements into a broadband normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and near-infrared (NIR) reflectance of vegetation (NIRv) which simultaneously explains the GPP variability. We found that the broadband NDVI and NIRv derived from R g and PAR measurements at the daily time scale were highly correlated with Planet Fusion, Landsat-8/9, and Sentinel-2 narrowband NDVI and NIRv across a wide range of climate and ecological gradients. The differences between satellite and broadband NDVI and NIRv were found to be significantly associated with soil background variations, phenological stages, water stress and signal saturation of broadband NIR reflectance at high biomass. The seasonal variability of broadband NDVI and NIRv remarkably captured the seasonality of vegetation phenology, evaporative fraction, GPP and rainfall in different ecosystems. Although saturation of GPP at high NDVI was evident, a linear relationship between broadband NIRv times incident PAR versus GPP indicated the effectiveness of NIRv-based approach to capture the hidden light use efficiency impacts on GPP. Our study concludes that inexpensive measurement of R g and PAR components can provide reliable information on NDVI, NIRv, and GPP uninterruptedly. This enhances the sensing capability of flux tower sites without requiring additional spectrometer measurements. The proposed in-situ vegetation indices make a compelling case on using radiation signals for handshaking between ecosystem-scale measurements and remote sensing observables relevant to carbon uptake.

Abstract:Fraction of abstracted Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FPAR) is a fundamental terrestrial state variable in most ecosystem productivity models and is also one of the key terrestrial products. This paper proposed a new Direct-Algorithm to retrieve FPAR from apparent reflectance of MODIS's seven bands in the visible, near-infrared and short-wave wavelengths. The Direct-Algorithm developed from the dataset simulated by radiative transfer models of canopy and atmosphere with different canopy structures and atmosphere conditions, estimated direct FPAR (FPARdir), and scattering FPAR (FPARsct), and total FPAR of the canopy (FPARtot) by using linear equations of TOA reflectance. Result showed that the estimated FPAR product were close to that of MODIS products except the forest, perhaps because the homogenous canopy of the SAIL model is not suitable for the forest canopy.
Assessment of MODIS, MERIS, GEOV1 FPAR Products over Northern China with Ground Measured Data and by Analyzing Residential Effect in Mixed Pixel

Abstract:Fraction of Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FPAR) is a critical parameter in land surface energy balance and climate modeling. Several global FPAR products are available, but these still require considerable assessment and validation due to low spatial resolution. Three major FPAR products that have covered China and provided continuous time series data—MODIS, MERIS and GEOV1—were assessed from 2006–2010. Based on the ground measurement data, the accuracies of these three FPAR products were directly validated for maize and winter wheat over northern China. This investigation also assessed the consistencies among the three FPAR products, and analyzed the residential area in mixed pixels effect on the FPAR products accuracy, at each of the main growth stages of maize and winter wheat. The GEOV1 FPAR product was found to be the most accurate with regression R2 values of 0.818 and 0.655 for ground measured maize and winter wheat FPAR. The maize FPAR data were generally more accurate than the winter wheat FPAR data. The MODIS, MERIS and GEOV1 products all indicated that FPAR variations among the growth stages differed from year to year. The scattered residential areas in mixed pixels were found to significantly affect the FPAR data uncertainties, and these were also analyzed in detail. The effect of residential area percentage in mixed pixels on FPAR values differed for different crops, and this was not necessarily in accordance with the FPAR product accuracy. For the mixed pixels, a quadratic polynomial was able to fit the residential area and FPAR data reasonably well with R2 values higher than 0.9 for most relationships. Quadratic polynomial fitting may provide a simple and convenient method to assess and reduce the residential area effect on FPAR in the mixed pixels.

Abstract:Multifaceted regime shifts of Earth's surface are ongoing dramatically and—in turn—considerably alter global carbon budget, energy balance and biogeochemical cycles. Sustainably managing terrestrial ecosystems requires an increased understanding of these structurally and functionally heterogeneous multi-component information and their changes, but we remain lack of such records of fractional vegetation and soil information at global scale. Here, we provide a globally comprehensive record of monthly vegetation and soil fractions during the period 2001–2022 using a spatio-temporally adaptive spectral mixture analysis framework. This product is designed to continuously represent Earth's terrestrial surface as a percentage of five physically meaningful vegetation and soil endmembers (photosynthetic vegetation, non-photosynthetic vegetation, bare soil, ice/snow, and dark surface) with high accuracy and low uncertainty, compared to previous vegetation index and vegetation continuous fields product, as well as traditional fully constrained linear spectral mixture models. We also adopt non-parametric seasonal Mann-Kendall tested fractional dynamics to identify shifts based on interactive changes of these fractions. Our results—superior to previous portrayal of the greening planet—not only report a +9.35×10 5 km 2 change of photosynthetic vegetation, but also explore decrease of non-photosynthetic vegetation (-2.19×10 5 km 2 ), bare soil (-5.14×10 5 km 2 ), and dark surface (-2.27×10 5 km 2 ). Besides, Interactive changes of these fractions yield multifaceted regime shifts with important implications, such as a simultaneous increase in PV and NPV in central and southwest China during afforestation activities, an increase of PV in cropland of China and India due to intensive agricultural development, a decrease of PV and increase of BS in tropical zones resulting from deforestation. These advantages highlight that our dataset which provides locally relevant information on multifaceted regime shifts at the required scale, enabling scalable modelling and effective governance of future terrestrial ecosystems. Abstract:Distinguishing gross primary production of sunlit and shaded leaves (GPPsun and GPPshade) is crucial for improving our understanding of the underlying mechanisms regulating long-term GPP variations. Here we produce a global 0.05°, 8-day dataset for GPP, GPPshade and GPPsun over 1992-2020 using an updated two-leaf light use efficiency model (TL-LUE), which is driven by the GLOBMAP leaf area index, CRUJRA meteorology, and ESA-CCI land cover. Our products estimate the mean annual totals of global GPP, GPPsun, and GPPshade over 1992-2020 at 125.0 ± 3.8 (mean ± std) Pg C a-1, 50.5 ± 1.2 Pg C a-1, and 74.5 ± 2.6 Pg C a-1, respectively, in which EBF (evergreen broadleaf forest) and CRO (crops) contribute more than half of the totals. They show clear increasing trends over time, in which the trend of GPP (also GPPsun and GPPshade) for CRO is distinctively greatest, and that for DBF (deciduous broadleaf forest) is relatively large and GPPshade overwhelmingly outweighs GPPsun. This new dataset advances our in-depth understanding of large-scale carbon cycle processes and dynamics.
