Abstract:Simultaneous detection and reduction of Au3+ in contaminated water is extremely desirable. Herein, we synthesized red fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) for Au3+ detection with dual colorimetric and fluorescent spectral response within 2 min. The CDs showed high sensitivity and selectivity towards Au3+ with a low detection limit of 29 nM. Further, CDs selectively reduce Au3+ to Au0 via redox reaction between the thioether group on the surface of CDs and Au3+. Accordingly, CDs were effectively utilized to detect and extract Au3+ without interference from other metal ions.

Abstract:The synthesis of fascinating multifunctional carbon dots (CDs) attracted immense attention. Here, a facile solvothermal treatment of red pitaya peels in acetic acid produced CDs (designated as ACDs, excitation/emission wavelengths at 357/432 nm). ACDs with high sp2-hybridized carbon and carboxylic group contents can rapidly and selectively reduce Au3+ to Au0, and stabilize produced Au nanoparticles (AuNPs). The synergetic effect of electron transfer from ACDs to Au3+ and inner filter effect (IFE) from ACDs to AuNPs quenches the fluorescence within 30 s. Simultaneously, the resulting AuNPs have a purple color with a maximum absorption at 545 nm for visual detection. Therefore, for the first time, we reported a fluorometric and colorimetric dual-mode sensing system for real-time, highly sensitive and selective detection of Au3+. The fluorescence quenching ratio and absorbance change linearly with the increase of Au3+ concentration in the range of 0.3–8.0 μM and 3.3–60.0 μM with limits of detection (LODs) at 0.072 μM and 2.2 μM, respectively. The assay was applied for Au3+ determination in spiked real water samples with recoveries from 95.5 to 105.0%, and relative standard deviation (RSD) of less than 6.5%. Furthermore, ACDs with good photostability, low cytotoxicity, and excellent biocompatibility were successfully applied for intracellular Au3+ sensing and imaging. In addition, ACDs exhibited an extraordinarily high antioxidant activity, with an IC50 value for DPPH radical scavenging (0.70 μg mL−1) much lower than that of ascorbic acid (4.34 μg mL−1). The proposed strategy demonstrates the outstanding properties of ACDs in chemical and biomedical analysis.

Abstract:Recently, widespread attention has been paid to red emissive carbon dots (CDs) which have desirable optical properties, low toxicity, and biocompatibility. Despite great efforts, the facile preparation of red dual-emissive CDs useful for ratiometric detection and bioimaging remains challenging. Here, we report a facile synthesis of red dual-emissive CDs and their potential for ratiometric fluorescence sensing and cellular imaging. Derived from the hydrothermal treatment of dicyandiamide and o-phenylenediamine in dilute sulfuric acid, the CDs are surface-tailored with nitrogen-, oxygen-, and sulfur-containing functional groups. The as-prepared CDs show various good features, including good water solubility, biocompatibility, excitation-independent dual-emission with two photoluminescence (PL) peaks centered at 630 and 680 nm, and an absolute quantum yield (QY) of 30.2% in water. The CDs exhibit a selective, sensitive, rapid, and stable ratiometric fluorescence response toward methyl blue, giving a linear relationship in the range of 0.5-300 mu M with a correlation coefficient (R-2) of 0.997. We also study ratiometric fluorescence sensing for the accurate detection of pH. Moreover, the CDs possess good cellular imaging ability, indicating their promising applicability for biomedical applications. These results pave a way toward the fabrication of red dual-emissive carbon-based nanomaterials useful for both ratiometric sensing and bioimaging.
Fluorescent Nitrogen and Sulfur Co-Doped Carbon Dots from Casein and Their Applications for Sensitive Detection of Hg2+ and Biothiols and Cellular Imaging.

Abstract:Fluorescent nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (NSCDs) were synthesized by a one-step pyrolysis strategy using casein as carbon, nitrogen and sulfur sources, and characterized by UVevis spectrum, fluorescent spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and FT-IR, etc. The synthesized NSCDs displayed a blue emission under ultraviolet illumination with a quantum yield of 31.8%, and a good aqueous solubility, photostability and biocompatibility. It was found that the fluorescence intensity of NSCDs could be selectively quenched by Hg2+, so NSCDs was used as an effective probe for the detection of Hg2+. The linear range and the limit of detection (LOD) of the fluorescent sensor based on NSCDs for the detection of Hg2+ were 0.01-0.25 mu M and 6.5 mu M, respectively. Spiked water samples were detected by the sensor with the recovery of 95.4-106.3% and relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.6-8.6%. It was also observed that the quenched NSCDs-Hg2+ system could be restored by the addition of biothiols such as L-cysteine (Lcy), homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH), thus NSCDs-Hg2+ system was employed as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of biothiols. The linear range and LOD of the NSCDs-Hg2+ system were 1-10 mM and 23.6 nM for Lcy, 0.2-2.5 mM and 12.3 nM for Hcy, and 0.1-2.0 mM and 16.8 nM for GSH, respectively. The NSCDs-Hg2+ system was applied for the detection of biothiols in serum samples with satisfied results. In addition, the study in vitro imaging HeLa cells revealed that the synthesized NSCDs could be used as effective fluorescent probes in cellular imaging without noticeable cytotoxicity. Facile Synthesis of N-rich Carbon Quantum Dots from Porphyrins As Efficient Probes for Bioimaging and Biosensing in Living Cells.

Abstract:N-rich metal-free and metal-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been prepared through one-step hydrothermal method using tetraphenylporphyrin or its transition metal (Pd or Pt) complex as precursor. The structures and morphology of the as-prepared nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Three kinds of nanocomposites show similar structures except for the presence of metal ions in Pd-CQDs and Pt-CQDs indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All of them display bright blue emission upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation. The CQDs exhibit typical excitation-dependent emission behavior, with the emission quantum yield of 10.1%, 17.8%, and 15.2% for CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs, respectively. Moreover, the CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs could serve as fluorescent probes for the specific and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution. The low cytotoxicity of CQDs is demonstrated by MTT assay against HeLa cells. Therefore, the CQDs can be used as efficient probes for cellular multicolor imaging and fluorescence sensors for the detection of Fe3+ ions due to their low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and low detection limits. This work provides a new route to synthesize highly luminescent N-rich metal-free or metal-doped CQDs for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have garnered extensive interest in basic physical chemistry as well as in biomedical applications due to their low cost, good biocompatibility, and great aqueous solubility. However, the synthesis of multi-functional carbon dots has always been a challenge for researchers. Here, we synthesized novel CDs with a high quantum yield of 28.2% through the straightforward hydrothermal method using Diaminomaleonitrile and Boc-D-2, 3-diaminopropionic acid. The size, chemical functional group, and photophysical properties of the CDs were characterized by TEM, FTIR, XPS, UV, and fluorescence. It was demonstrated in this study that the prepared CDs have a high quantum yield, excellent photostability, and low cytotoxicity. Regarding the highly water-soluble property of CDs, they were proven to possess selective and sensitive behavior against Cu2+ ions (linear range = 0-9 μM and limit of detection = 1.34 μM). Moreover, the CDs were utilized in fluorescent ink in anti-counterfeiting measures. Because of their low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility, the CDs were also successfully utilized in cell imaging. Therefore, the as-prepared CDs have great potential in fluorescence sensing, anti-counterfeiting, and bioimaging.
Facile synthesis of S, N-co-doped carbon dots for bio-imaging, Fe3+detection and DFT calculation

Abstract:Turning waste into wealth, herein, two highly fluorescent N and S co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B) were synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of contaminant reactive red 2 (RR2) and L-cysteine or L-methionine, respectively. The detailed morphology and structure of N, S-CDs were characterized by XRD, Raman spectrum, FTIR spectra, TEM, HRTEM, AFM and XPS. The maximum fluorescent of N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B are 565 and 615 nm under different excitation wavelengths with moderate fluorescence intensity of 14.0 % and 6.3 %, respectively. The microstructure models of N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B, which were induced by FT-IR, XPS and element analysis, had been applied in DFT calculation. The result indicated that the doping of S and N is beneficial to obtain the red-shift of fluorescent spectra. Both N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B showed highly sensitive and selective to Fe3+. N, S-CDs-A can also detect Al3+ ion with high sensitivity and selectivity. Finally, N, S-CDs-B was successfully applied in cell imaging.

Abstract:Herein, one type of carbon dots (CDs) directed by L-threonine has been innovatively synthesized on the basis of a facile approach. Meanwhile, the CDs mainly consisted of C, O, N, and P according to the detailed characterizations. Importantly, the CDs obtained here not only exhibited the bright-blue fluorescence and generally acceptable stability, but also showed the promising for detecting Au3+ and L-methionine. To be specific, the off process by an obvious fluorescence quenching of the CDs achieved assaying Au3+, and Au3+ could be removed by the introduction of L-methionine through the stronger interaction between Au3+ and L-methionine, and thus leading to the fluorescence of CDs recovered. Consequently, the quantitative analyses of Au3+ concentration in a linear range of 6 mu M-1 mM was obtained along with the range from 80 mu M to 1 mM for L-methionine. In addition, the practicability of this proposed method was validated by the detections of the lake samples, suggesting that it could broaden the sensing strategies for assaying both Au3+ and L-methionine.

Abstract:Carbon dots with red fluorescence (R‐CDs) were synthesized using a one‐step hydrothermal method with citric acid and urea as precursors. The fluorescence of R‐CDs can be extinguished dramatically using Al3+ based on static quenching. We developed a facile strategy for the fabrication of red fluorescent carbon nanodots (R‐CDs) and demonstrated their applications for Al3+ sensing. Red‐emission carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized using a simple hydrothermal treatment with citric acid and urea as precursors, manifesting intriguing red‐emission behaviour at 610 nm. With increasing Al3+ concentration, the fluorescence band at 610 nm decreased gradually. Monitoring the intrinsic fluorescence variation (I610nm), as‐prepared CDs were developed as an effective platform for fluorescent Al3+ sensing, with a linear range of 0.5–60.0 μM and a detection limit of 3.0 nM. More importantly, R‐CDs have been applied successfully to the analysis of Al3+ in actual samples with satisfactory recoveries in the range 97.12–102.05%, which indicated that obtained CDs could be implemented as an effective tool for the identification and detection of Al3+ in actual samples.

Multi-applications of carbon dots and polydopamine-coated carbon dots for Fe3+ detection, bioimaging, dopamine assay and photothermal therapy

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) or CDs/polymer composites have been applied in numerous fields. Here, novel CDs were synthesized by carbonization of egg yolk, and characterized by TEM, FTIR, XPS and photoluminescence spectra. The CDs were found to be approximate sphere in shape with an average size of 4.46 ± 1.17 nm, and emitted bright blue photoluminescence under UV irradiation. The photoluminescence of CDs was found selectively quenched by Fe 3+ in a linear manner in the range of 0.05–0.45 mM, meaning they could be applied for Fe 3+ detection in solution. Moreover, the CDs could be uptaken by HepG2 cells to exhibit bright blue photoluminescence. The intensity could reflect the level of intracellular Fe 3+ , indicating they could be further used for cell imaging and intracellular Fe 3+ monitoring. Next, dopamine was polymerized on the surface of CDs to obtain the polydopamine (PDA)-coated CDs (CDs@PDA). We found PDA coating could quench the photoluminescence of CDs via inner filter effect, and the degree of quenching was linearly related to the logarithm of DA concentration (Log C DA ). Also, the selectivity experiment indicated the method had a high selectivity for DA over a number of possible interfering species. This indicated the CDs in combination with Tris buffer could be potentially applied as the assay kit of dopamine. At last, the CDs@PDA exhibited excellent photothermal conversion capability, and they could efficiently kill HepG2 cells under NIR laser irradiation. Overall, the CDs and CDs@PDA in this work exhibited many excellent advantages, and could be potentially used for multi-applications, such as Fe 3+ sensor in solution and cellular, cell imaging, dopamine assay kit, as well as photothermal agents for cancer therapy.

Abstract:Carbon dots keep attracting attention in multidisciplinary fields, motivating the development of new compounds. Phenylenediamine C6H4(NH2)2 dots are known to exhibit colorful emission, which depends on size, composition, and the functional surface groups, forming those structures. While quite a few fabrication protocols have been developed, the quantum yield of phenylenediamine dots still does not exceed 50% owing to undesired fragment formation during carbonization. Here, we demonstrate that an ethylene glycol-based environment allows obtaining multicolor high-quantum-yield phenylenediamine carbon dots. In particular, a kinetic realization of solvothermal synthesis in acidic environments enhances carbonization reaction yield for meta phenylenediamine compounds and leads to quantum yields, exciting 60%. Reaction yield after the product's purification approaches 90%. Furthermore, proximity of metal ions (Nd3+, Co3+, La3+) can either enhance or quench the emission, depending on the concentration. Optical monitoring of the solution allows performing an accurate detection of ions at picomolar concentrations. An atomistic model of carbon dots was developed to confirm that the functional surface group positioning within the molecular structure has a major impact on dots' physicochemical properties. Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have been widely used in recent years because of their excellent water solubility and abundant surface functional groups. However, compared with quantum dots or biological probes, the quantum yield of CDs is lower, and the fluorescence mainly concentrated in the blue-green range, which significantly limits the biological applications of CDs. Heteroatoms doping is the most common method to improve the luminescence of CDs. In this work, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped luminescent CDs were successfully synthesized by microwave assisted method using glutathione (GSH) and p-phenylenediamine (PPD) as raw materials. It can emit bright green fluorescence in ethanol solution, and the maximum emission wavelength is 535 nm when excited at 374 nm, and the absolute quantum yield is as high as 63%. Iron ion (Fe3+) can interact with the functional groups on the surface of the CDs to form CDs/Fe3+, which is a non-fluorescence complex, and Fe3+ can be reduced to ferrous ion (Fe2+). In other words, the reaction mechanism of CDs and Fe3+ is a combination of dynamic quenching and static quenching. The fluorescence of CDs quenched by Fe3+ can be restored by thiol, because there is a stronger binding force between sulfhydryl (-SH) on the surface of thiol and Fe3+, which enables CDs to be released. In addition, the CDs has good biocompatibility and stability, indicating that it has excellent potential in bioimaging. This discovery will expand the application of CDs in the fields of biosensing and imaging.

Abstract:Red-emitting carbon dots (R-CDs) have triggered ever-increasing interest in biochemical sensing due to their deep tissue penetration and minimal biological auto-fluorescence interference. Herein, dual-emitting intrinsic RCDs are fabricated and well-characterized. R-CDs display ratiometric and colorimetric sensing properties for heavy metal ions (HMIs, Cu2+, Hg2++, and Fe3++), with the corresponding detection limits of 24.5, 74.2, and 170 nM, respectively. Additionally, smartphone imaging colorimetry based on red-green-blue (RGB) value variations is employed to achieve real-time and on-site detection of these HMIs. Crucially, discrimination of these HMIs is facilitated by principal component analysis. Furthermore, R-CDs demonstrate effective optical sensing of these HMIs in tap/lake water and human urine with satisfactory recoveries (95.82-104.8 %). The underlying mechanism of optical sensing, which involves metal ion-triggered aggregation-induced quenching, is elucidated by spectroscopic, morphological analysis, and quantum mechanical calculations. This work presents a feasible realtime approach for the fluorescent and smartphone-assisted dual-mode detection of HMIs.
Red emitting and highly stable carbon dots with dual response to pH values and ferric ions

Abstract:The authors describe strongly red-emitting carbon dots (CDs) which were obtained via microwave synthesis using phenylenediamine as the carbon source. The structural and optical properties of the resultant CDs are studied in some detail. The CDs possess (a) longwave emission (peaking at 620 nm under 470 nm excitation), (b) a quantum yield of ~15%, (c) a size of typically 3.8 nm; and (d) good photostability. The CDs have a pH-dependet response that covers the pH 5 to 10 range, and their fluorescence is quenched by ferric ions. The CDs can detect ferric ions in aqueous samples in the 0 to 30 μM concentration range with a lower detection limit of 15 nM. The CDs were also used to image pH values and ferric ions in E. coli bacteria. Graphical abstract The red-emitting carbon dots with high stability are synthesized which show dual response to pH-values and ferric ions in aqueous solution and biological media simultaneously.

Abstract:In this study, a new type of red light-emitting carbon dots (R-CDs) that can selectively recognize Cr(VI) was prepared by using the strategy of 2,4-diaminophenol to enhance the fluorescence of O-phenylenediamine based carbon dots. The results showed that 2,4-diaminophenol increased the quantum yield (QY) of carbon quantum dots (CDs), and the QY of CDs increased from the original 8.7% to 20.1%(R-CDs). R-CDs show sensitivity to acidic conditions and maintain good linearity between pH = 1.00-4.00, making them useful for pH probes. Furthermore, the prepared R-CDs possess good solubility in water. They are responsive to changes in Cr(VI) concentrations in aqueous environments. R-CDs' quenching was linearly correlated with the Cr(VI) concentration within a range of 0-20 μM, with a lower detection limit of 66 nM. The detection mechanism is attributed to the formation of hydrogen bonds between Cr(VI) and R-CDs, resulting in the fluorescence quenching of R-CDs. R-CDs could be considered effective multifunctional fluorescent probes for pH and Cr(VI) in aqueous environments. This study will provide new R-CD design strategies that selectively identify specific target substances.

Abstract:In this study, a facile synthesis of two ionized carbon dots (CDs-2 and CDs-3) is reported, in which different ionic pairs are formed at the surface of the carbon core. In contrast to CDs-3, the accumulation of carbon core can be clearly observed in the TEM image of CDs-2. This is due to the linkage of the dibromine alkyl group. Compared with naked CDs in the absence of the ionic pair, the maximum emission wavelength undergoes a red-shift of nearly 60 nm. Moreover, protic solvents (water, ethanol and N,N'-dimethyl formamide) have an apparent effect on the emission intensities of CDs-2 and CDs-3. The time-resolved average lifetimes of CDs-2 and CDs-3 are calculated as 56.34 ns and 54.50 ns, respectively. Furthermore, they both have much better fluorescence stability in the solution with pH ranging from 2 to 11 due to the presence of the imidazolium cation. It is interesting to see that CDs-2 and CDs-3 have much different responses towards Cu2+ and Fe2+. The CDs-3 solution generates clear fluorescence quenching when treated with Fe2+. In brief, we believe that these findings can inspire more research developments in the synthesis and further application of functional CDs.
Dual-property blue and red emission carbon dots for Fe(III) ions detection and cellular imaging

Abstract:The excitation wavelength-dependent and -independent emissions are two crucial fluorescent properties of carbon dots (CDs). However, CDs reported till date exhibit only one of these properties, which limits their practical applications. Herein, dual-property carbon dots (DCDs) with both the excitation wavelength-dependent and -independent emissions were synthesized via a facile one-step solvothermal method using 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol as the carbon precursor. The multi-functional applications of the resulting DCDs were also evaluated. The as-prepared DCDs exhibited not only excellent monodispersity, high photostability, and storage stability, but also low toxicity, good biocompatibility, and cellular bioimaging capability. In addition, the DCDs exhibited excitation-dependent emission photoluminescence under low excitation wavelengths. The DCDs exhibited good Fe3+ detection by quenching the blue emission fluorescence and showed a relatively low Fe3+ detection limit of 0.067 μmol·L−1 based on three times signal-to-noise criteria (R2 = 0.99). Furthermore, the DCDs showed excitation-independent emission at low excitation wavelengths and exhibited red emission at about 598 nm to avoid damage to the body. These results demonstrate the excellent bioimaging properties of the DCDs. Owing to their dual PL properties, the as-prepared DCDs exhibited multi-functional applications: Fe3+ detection and A549 cell bioimaging. These results will be helpful in developing novel CDs for applications in various fields.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic abstract</h3>

Abstract:In this work, we designed N and S co-doped carbon dots ( N , S -CDs) with long-wavelength emission and their multifunctional application in pH variation, arginine (Arg) sensing, bioimaging in living cells and zebrafish, and fluorescent materials. The N , S -CDs with excitation wavelength-dependent properties were prepared using neutral red (NR) and dl -methionine (DL-Met) as raw materials by one-pot hydrothermal strategy. The N , S -CDs exhibited a unique pH-sensitive luminescence trait within pH range of 3.2–11.0 and have great linear relationship of 4.8–8.0, which indicating their potential application as an imaging reagent in physiological environments. Arg can quench the PL of N , S -CDs due to static quenching. (SQ). The linear range is 2.5–62.5 μM and the LOD is calculated as 0.68 μM. Furthermore, the as-proposed N , S -CDs can be applied as imaging reagents for monitoring of pH and Arg in vivo and vitro owing to outstanding biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. Interestingly, the N , S -CDs were also used in fluorescent composite films and phosphors owing to exceptional optical properties. All these results indicate that the N , S -CDs have huge potentiality in the areas of fluorescence sensing, bioimaging and fluorescent materials.

Abstract:Herein, red-emitting nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were prepared using p-phenylenediamine and polyethylene glycol 20000 as precursors. The N-CDs are spherical and uniformly distributed with average particle sizes of 2.36 nm. The N-CDs display excitation-independent fluorescence behavior with the optimal excitation and the maximum emission wavelengths centered at 487 and 628 nm, respectively. Results indicated that as prepared CDs can provide a rapid and highly selective recognition of Cu 2+ with the range of 45-70 μM and a detection (LOD) limit of 45.87 μM. A clear color change of the N-CDs solution (orange-red to black) can also be visualized by adding Cu 2+ . Moreover, a smartphone-based platform for the detection of Cu 2+ was developed to detect Cu 2+ in real time by analyzing RGB values, giving a linear range of 20-140 μM. and a LOD limit of 35.83 μM. In addition, it was applied for the detection of Cu 2+ in tap water, the recoveries were 86.18%-104.95%, and the relative standard deviations were 1.64%-2.43%. The N-CDs can be used to detect Cu 2+ in vitro and in vivo.
