Abstract:Quaternary ammonium and phosphonium borane bifunctional catalysts have shown high catalytic performance in ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of epoxides to produce polyether. Herein, we systematically investigate a series of well-defined organoboron catalysts by varying the electronic and steric properties of the Lewis acidic boron (B) centers, manipulating the steric hindrance on the ammonium cation (N+), adjusting the distance between B and N+, and regulating the nucleic B number of the catalysts. The investigation on the dinuclear catalysts indicated that the reactivity of a given catalyst could be speculated by its B- N-B angle and the B center dot center dot center dot B distance. We found that the increase of Lewis acidity and the number of B centers of the organoboron catalysts are useful for a high catalytic activity for ROP of epoxides. The Lewis acidity of the B centers was determined using the acceptor numbers, showing an order of borinane (23.4) > BBN (21.7) > BCy2 (18.8) > Bpin (15.5). Moreover, we demonstrated the production of various telechelic polyols in the presence of different chain transfer agents using the organoboron catalysts. The produced telechelic samples have a well-defined terminal functionality with controllable molecular weight. Lastly, these organoboron catalysts were utilized to produce block copolymers, allyl-terminated macromonomers, and random copolymers.

Abstract:AbstractThis manuscript describes a kind of bifunctional organocatalyst with unprecedented reactivity for the synthesis of polyethers via ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of epoxides under mild conditions. The bifunctional catalyst incorporates two 9‐borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane centers on the two ends as Lewis acidic sites for epoxide activation and a quaternary ammonium halide in the middle as the initiating site. The catalyst could be easily prepared in two steps from commercially available stocks on up to kilogram scale with ≈100 % yield. The organoboron catalyst mediated ROP of epoxides displays living behavior with low catalyst loading (5 ppm) and enables the synthesis of polyethers with molecular weights of over a million grams per mole (>106 g mol−1). Based on the investigations on crystal structure of catalyst, MALDI‐TOF, and 11B NMR spectroscopy, an intramolecular ammonium cation assisted SN2 mechanism is proposed and verified by DFT calculations.

Abstract:Ring-opening polymerization affords an efficient strategy to convert β-butyrolactone into poly(β-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) which is a promising and widely used biodegradable polyester. Although numerous metallic catalysts have been well established, the toxic residual metal contaminants of them impede the application of PHBs especially in the biomedical and microelectronic field. Herein, we explore a series of bifunctional organoboron catalysts with varying frameworks and nucleophiles for preparing PHBs. The modular design of these well-defined catalysts permits synthetically facile steric and electronic interference to systematically optimize catalytic activity. The optimized catalyst achieved ideal reactivity with an excellent polymer selectivity (>99%) in a controlled manner. It was further confirmed that the BBL ring is opened at the alkyl–oxygen bond with the concomitance of the inversion of chiral centers, resulting in polyesters terminated by carboxylate. Additionally, side reactions were comprehensively investigated and a mechanism was proposed.

Abstract:In recent years, significant advancements have been made in the realm of organoboron catalysis for the homopolymerization of epoxides and the copolymerization of epoxides and other monomers. Nevertheless, the utilization of chiral organoboron catalysts for the stereoselective polymerization of epoxides is underdeveloped and highly needed. Herein, we present a suite of chiral bifunctional and binary organoboron catalysts to catalyze the homopolymerization of racemic epoxides in isotactic-enriched polyethers (62.1%m-84.8%m) with narrow dispersities. This article explores the effects of catalysts with different chemical structures and initiators as well as the reaction temperature and solvents on the stereoselective polymerization of epoxides, providing guidance for the upgrading of chiral organoboron catalysts and the design of new organocatalysts. A suite of chiral binary and bifunctional organoboron catalysts were designed and utilized for the stereoselective polymerization of epoxides into isotactic-enriched polyethers with moderate isotacticities of 62.1%m-84.8%m and narrow dispersities.

Abstract:A novel metal-free and protecting-group-free synthesis method to prepare telechelic thiol-functionalized polyesters is developed by employing organocatalysis. A scope of Brønsted acids, including trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (1), HCl.Et2O (2), diphenyl phosphate (3), γ-resorcylic acid (4) and methanesulfonic acid (5), are evaluated to promote ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone with unprotected 6-mercapto-1-hexanol as the multifunctional initiator. Among them, diphenyl phosphate (3) exhibits great chemoselectivity and efficiency, which allows for simply synthesis of thiol-terminated poly(ε-caprolactone) with near-quantitative thiol fidelity, full monomer conversion, controlled molecular weight and narrow polydispersity. Kinetic study confirms living/controlled nature of the organocatalyzed chemoselective polymerizations. Density functional theory calculation illustrates that the chemoselectivity of diphenyl phosphate (3) is attributed to the stronger bifunctional activation of monomer and initiator/chain-end as well as the lower energy in hydroxyl pathway than thiol one. Moreover, series of tailor-made telechelic thiol-terminated poly(δ-valerolactone) and block copolymers are efficiently generated under mild conditions.

Abstract:In this work, novel polyethylene graft copolymers with polyfluorosiloxane side chains were prepared. A polyfluorosiloxane (PMTFPS) macromonomer with octenyl terminal group was synthesized by hydrosilylation of dimethylchlorosilane with 1,7-octadiene and the subsequent anionic ring-opening polymerization of 1,3,5-tris[(3',3',3'-trifluoropropyl)methyl] cyclotrisiloxane (D3F). Copolymerizations of the PMTFPS macromonomer with ethylene were performed with VCl3 (THF)(3)/Et(2)AICl catalyst system, which exhibited good tolerance and excellent catalytic activity. Resulting copolymers exhibited narrow molecular weight distribution and homogeneous chemical composition distribution. PMTFPS content ranged from 26.6 wt % to 57.4 wt %, which could be adjusted by the macromonomer feed. This synthetic pathway facilitated the straightforward fabrication of polyethylene-g-polysiloxane graft copolymers with tunable grafts.

Abstract:Well-defined (isotactic) linear polyglycerols and glycerol-based copolyethers are obtained by controlled and chemoselective ring-opening (co)polymerizations of glycidyl butyrates. Linear polyglycerols are highly valued for their excellent hydrophilicity and biocompatibility as well as their multihydroxy nature. We report here a convenient route for the controlled synthesis of polyglycerols through ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of commercialized glycidyl butyrates (GBs). Starting from enantiopure GBs, well-defined poly(glycidyl ester)s with controlled molar mass and stereoregularity are achieved thanks to the chemoselectivity of the bicomponent metal-free catalyst that prevents both transesterification and epimerization. The pendant butyrate groups are readily cleaved by organobase-catalyzed methanolysis, yielding linear polyglycerols that inherit isotacticity and regioregularity from the parent polymers. Copolymerization of S GB and propylene oxide occurs in a random manner resulting in a series of narrowly distributed copolyethers with a precisely regulated number of pendant hydroxyl groups to afford tunable aqueous thermosensitivity. The method is further extended to construct polyglycerol-based amphiphilic and double-hydrophilic copolyethers by block copolymerization of R GB with tert -butyl glycidyl ether and ethylene oxide, respectively.

Abstract:Organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) is a versatile method for synthesizing well-defined polymers with controlled molecular weights, dispersities, and nonlinear macromolecular architectures. Despite spectacular advances in organocatalytic ROP, precision synthesis of polysiloxanes remains challenging due to the mismatch in polarity between highly polar initiators and nonpolar monomers and polymers and the difficulty in suppressing the formation of scrambling products via transetherification reactions during ROP of cyclic siloxanes. Here, we describe a binary organocatalytic ROP (BOROP) of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3) employing organic bases as catalysts and (thio)ureas as cocatalysts. The BOROP of D3 using triazabicyclodecene (TBD) and (thio)ureas generates polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMSs) with narrow dispersity ( M w / M n < 1.1). Despite the similar basicities of TBD and 1,8-bis(tetramethylguanidino)naphthalene (TMGN), which is known as a proton sponge, a unitary organocatalytic system using TMGN was inactive for the ROP of D3. When the TMGN was paired with acidic urea, the BOROP of D3 yielded PDMSs with narrow dispersity ( M w / M n < 1.1). Data suggest that the synergetic effect of TMGN and urea is results in an unprecedented activation–deactivation equilibrium between dormant and propagating species. The benefits of the present BOROP system are demonstrated by the formation of PDMS elastomers with more uniform network structures that are highly stretchy and have excellent mechanical properties.

Abstract:The copolymerization of structurally distinct epoxides and cyclic esters offers polyether-block-polyester copolymers which are valuable synthetic materials. However, the anionic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of glycidyl ethers is not usually compatible with the subsequent ROP of lactide (LA). We designed a switchable approach composed of the tetrabutylammonium fluoride initiated ROP of glycidyl phenyl ether (GPE), followed by the addition of thiourea (TU) to initiate the ROP of LA. The active alkoxide chain end of the first ROP was turned into an alcohol, and the TU was turned into a thioureate anion (TUA). The TUA promoted the ROP of LA from the alcohol via bifunctional H-bonding catalysis to full monomer conversion in a controlled/living manner. Poly(GPE-b-LA) with precise molecular weights and narrow dispersities (D, 1.13 to 1.19) were prepared at room temperature in solution. H-1 NMR titrations suggested the formation of the TUA and its coordination with chain end hydroxyl; this played key roles in the switch of ROPs and H-bonding catalyzed ROP of LA. The anionic to H-bonding switchable catalysis showed a general and simple protocol to copolymerize epoxides and cyclic esters into diblock copolymers.
Controlled Ring‐Opening Polymerization of Methyl Glycolide with Bifunctional Organocatalyst

Abstract:A bifunctional thiourea-amine-based organocatalyst (Takemoto's catalyst), employing a metal-free approach, is presented for the regioselective ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of optically active (D and L) methyl glycolide (MG). In this study, a chiral version of Takemoto's catalyst efficiently promotes the ROP of MG at room temperature, yielding poly(lactic-co-glycolic acids) (PLGAs) with predicted molecular weights and narrow polydispersity indices (PDI≤1.2). These PLGAs exhibit highly alternating structures without transesterification, as confirmed by 1H NMR, SEC, and MALDI-TOF analyses. Additionally, various macromolecular architectures, including linear and star-shaped PLGAs, were successfully synthesized using corresponding multi-functional alcohol initiators while maintaining the same alternating structures and regioselectivity with PLGA obtained from benzyl alcohol as initiator. Computational studies were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of alternating PLGA formation, revealing two key transition states (TSs): TS-1, which implicates the nucleophilic attack of the hydroxyl group of the initiator or propagating chain on the carbonyl carbon of MG, and TS-2, which involves the subsequent ring-opening of the cyclic ester. The results indicate that ring-opening occurs at both the glycolyl and lactyl sites, with a preference for the glycolyl site, as supported by experimental results. The resulting atactic PLGAs are amorphous, rendering them suitable for drug delivery applications.

Abstract:The polymerization method, preparation of well-defined (co)polymers, and controlled/living property of ethyl sorbate (ES) have been investigated using hydrosilylation-promoted group transfer polymerization (GTP). The GTP of ES with hydrosilane (R3SiH) was performed in a living manner to produce well-defined poly(ethyl sorbate) (PES) via two methods: single catalyst and catalyst switch. For the single catalyst method, B(C6F5)3 served as the catalyst for the hydrosilylation of ES and R3SiH, yielding silyl ketene acetal (SKA), as well as the polymerization of ES and PES with the trans structure. SKA was prepared using the catalyst switch method via equimolar hydrosilylation with B(C6F5)3, and the phosphazene base of t-Bu-P4 catalyzed the polymerization of ES, yielding PES with cis and trans structures. The kinetic experiments demonstrated that the propagation rate k p for t-Bu-P4-catalyzed GTP is significantly higher than that for B(C6F5)3. The α-end-functionalized PES was synthesized via the hydrosilylation-promoted GTP of ES using a sorbate ester with a functional group as the moisture-stable latent initiator via the catalyst switch method. Furthermore, the controlled/living property has enabled the hydrosilylation-promoted GTP of ES with MMA and n-butyl acrylate (nBA) to produce the AB-diblock copolymer and ABA- and ABC-triblock copolymers composed of PES, PMMA, and PnBA.

Adenovirus type 7h respiratory infections: a report of 29 cases of acute lower respiratory disease

Abstract:Twenty‐nine cases of pediatric acute lower respiratory disease associated with adenovirus genome type 7h were evaluated retrospectively. They constituted 2.4% of 1233 cases of acute respiratory infections treated in five hospitals in Buenos Aires, between September 1984 and September 1988. Pneumonia and bronchiolitis were the principal diagnoses. The mean age of patients was 8.8 months and 82.7% of the children were less than one year of age. None of the patients had previously been exposed to measles or was immunocompromised. A mixed infection, viral or bacterial, was demonstrated in 8 of the 29 patients. Sixteen children developed a severe pulmonary disease which required intensive care. Ten with a clinical diagnosis of multifocal pneumonia and necrotizing bronchiolitis died. Extrapulmonary manifestations were observed in the most severe cases. Observations suggest a possible high pathogenicity of adenovirus type 7h and emphasize the need for adequate control and case management programs.

Abstract:Polythioesters are important sustainable polymers with broad applications. The ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of S-Carboxyanhydrides (SCA) can afford polythioesters with functional groups that are typically difficult to prepare by ROP of thiolactones. Typical methods involving organocatalysts, like dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) and triethylamine (Et3N), have been plagued by uncontrolled polymerization, including epimerization for most SCAs resulting in the loss of isotacticity. Here, we report the use of salen aluminum catalysts for the selective ROP of various SCAs without epimerization, affording functionalized polythioester with high molecular weight up to 37.6 kDa and the highest Pm value up to 0.99. Notably, the ROP of TlaSCA (SCA prepared from thiolactic acid) generates the first example of a crystalline isotactic poly(thiolactic acid), which exhibited a distinct Tm value of 152.6 °C. Effective ligand tailoring governs the binding affinity between the sulfide chain-end and the metal center, thereby maintaining the activity of organometallic catalysts and reducing the occurrence of epimerization reactions.

Abstract:We developed a series of Zn(II)-Co(III) double metal cyanide (DMC) catalysts with exceptional activity for the ring-opening polymerization of various cyclic monomers by employing diverse organophosphorus compounds as complexing agents (CAs). The chemical structure and composition of DMC catalysts were investigated by commonly used analysis such as infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, and elemental analysis combining with in situ NMR analysis to determine the complexation types of organophosphorus compounds the catalyst framework. The resulting catalysts exhibited very high turnover frequencies (up to 631.4 min−1) in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of propylene oxide and good efficiency for the ROP of ε-caprolactone. The resultant polyester polyols are suitable to use as an macroinitiator to produce well-defined poly(ester ether) triblock copolymers of 1800–6600 g mol−1 and dispersity of 1.16–1.37. Additionally, the DMC catalysts bearing organophosphorus compounds CAs exhibited remarkable selectivity for the copolymerization of PO with CO2, yielding poly(ether carbonate) polyols with carbonate contents up to 34.5%. This study contributes to the development of efficient DMC catalytic systems that enable the synthesis of high-quality polyols for various applications.

Abstract:Ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) is an effective means to prepare functionalized polyester. In this work, a type of selenide-containing polyesters with controllable structure, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution was successfully prepared by ROCOP of γ-selenobutyrolactone and epoxy compounds. The influence of the catalyst, solvent, and reaction temperature on the reaction efficiency was examined. Then, kinetic study was investigated under an optimized condition. The structure of the copolymers was carefully characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and 77Se NMR, Matrix-assisted laser-desorption-ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The resulting polymers showed a linear structure with a sequence regulated backbone repeating unit of ester-selenide. On this basis, some typical epoxides were investigated to verify the scope of the polymerization system. Due to the “living”/controlled characteristics of this ROCOP, multiblock, amphiphilic, and stereotactic copolymers could be prepared with a pre-designed structure. As expected, the selenide-containing amphiphilic copolymer could self-assemble to micelles and showed an oxidative response.

Abstract:Glaser coupling reaction of alkynyl groups was used as a new ring closure technique to synthesize monocyclic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and polystyrene (PS) successfully The linear PEO with hydroxyl groups at both ends was prepared by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ethylene oxide (EO) using 2,2 dimethyl 1,3 propanediol and diphenylmethylpotassium (DPMK) as co initiators, terminated by anhydrous methanol The linear PS with hydroxyl groups at both ends was prepared by anionic polymerization using lithium naphthalenide as initiator and terminated by EO The propargyl telechelic precursors (l-PEO and l-PS) were then obtained by the reaction between hydroxyl-telechelic polymers (HO PEO OH and HO-PS OH) and propargyl bromide in the presence of sodium hydride The intramolecular cyclizations of the latter were carried out in the presence of Cu(I)Br/N N N' N " N "-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PM DETA) under mild conditions with oxygen in the air as oxidant and the efficiency was as high as nearly 100% The cyclic PEO and PS (c-PEO and c PS) were characterized by GPC, H-1 NMR, FTIR, and MALDI-TOF MS G factors (ratio of the apparent peak molar masses of cyclic product to their linear precursor) derived from GPC profiles were in the range 0 63-0 80 The highly efficient Glaser coupling took place at ambient temperature and did not need oxygen removal procedures, so It was a convenient approach for nearly quantitative preparation of cyclic polymers

Abstract:Thiol-functionalized polyethers, especially poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), have extensive applications in biomedicine and materials sciences.
