Abstract:Manganese oxide (MnO)x with earth-abundance and low toxicity have received considerable interest for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) but suffer from poor catalytic activity and stability. Herein, a unique hybrid hollow structure with ultrasmall size MnOx quantum dots (QDs, 3 nm) homogeneously dispersed on N-doped porous carbon shells (denoted as MnOx/N-HPCS) was designed as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst. The ultrafine nanoscaling morphology of MnOx QDs enlarges its specific surface area (227.9 m(2)/g) for providing more active sites. The N-doped carbon (NC) shells can not only greatly improve the conductivity of the hybrid and effectively prevent the aggregation of MnOx QDs, but serve as metal-free active sites for Fenton-like reaction. While the hollow porous structure enables the fast transportation of reactants access to the full-exposure active sites. When evaluated as catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, the MnOx/N-HPCS hybrid outperformed other benchmark catalysts toward the removal of bisphenol A (BPA) with highest removal rate of 0.29 min(-1). Results showed that exceed 99% of BPA (10 mg L-1) was removed within 20 min at the dosage of 0.2 g L-1 PMS and 0.06 g L-1 MnOx/N-HPCS. Moreover, the mechanism of PMS activation by MnOx/N-HPCS was studied. The mixed valence states of Mn, the hydroxyl species induced complexation of equivalent to Mn((3+/4+))-PMS and the metal-free N-doped sites synergistically enhancing the generation of reactive oxygen species ((OH)-O-. and SO4.-). Furthermore, the MnOx/N-HPCS catalyst also displayed good reusability (successive 4 runs) with negligible Mn leaching (less than 2 mu g L-1). Together with the investigation of the application in real environment water samples (such as tap water and wastewater), we demonstrated this novel Mn-based AOPs catalyst with unique structure and high activity will hold great potential in environmental remediation.
Electron Delocalization Realizes Speedy Fenton‐Like Catalysis over a High‐Loading and Low‐Valence Zinc Single‐Atom Catalyst

Abstract:Atomically dispersed mix‐coordinated Zn−N4 and Zn−N3 sites facilitate the formation of ZnSA‐N‐C−PDS* complex. Besides a minor superoxide radical (O2●‒) oxidation route, the electron transfer from the electron‐rich pollutant toward ZnSA‐N‐C−PDS* dominates speedy bisphenol A (BPA) remediation. A zinc (Zn)‐based single‐atom catalyst (SAC) is recently reported as an active Fenton‐like catalyst; however, the low Zn loading greatly restricts its catalytic activity. Herein, a molecule‐confined pyrolysis method is demonstrated to evidently increase the Zn loading to 11.54 wt.% for a Zn SAC (ZnSA‐N‐C) containing a mixture of Zn−N4 and Zn−N3 coordination structures. The latter unsaturated Zn−N3 sites promote electron delocalization to lower the average valence state of Zn in the mix‐coordinated Zn−Nx moiety conducive to interaction of ZnSA‐N‐C with peroxydisulfate (PDS). A speedy Fenton‐like catalysis is thus realized by the high‐loading and low‐valence ZnSA‐N‐C for PDS activation with a specific activity up to 0.11 min L−1 m−2, outstripping most Fenton‐like SACs. Experimental results reveal that the formation of ZnSA‐N‐C−PDS* complex owing to the strong affinity of ZnSA‐N‐C to PDS empowers intense direct electron transfer from the electron‐rich pollutant toward this complex, dominating the rapid bisphenol A (BPA) elimination. The electron transfer pathway benefits the desirable environmental robustness of the ZnSA‐N‐C/PDS system for actual water decontamination. This work represents a new class of efficient and durable Fenton‐like SACs for potential practical environmental applications.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs), which have great potential in the field of water environmental remediation. Development of highly efficient SACs with sufficient stability and excellent catalytic performance was highly desirable, yet remains a huge challenge. Herein, a CoSA/NHCS catalyst was prepared by confining Co single-atom into the N-doped Hollow Carbon Sphere (NHCS) to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for removing bisphenol A (BPA). Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) studies show that the combination of Co-N4 active site and electron transfer mechanism could achieve rapid degradation of BPA (98 % within 1 min). The main active sites of BPA attacked by the electron transfer pathway were predicted by calculating BPA molecular orbitals and Fukui indices. The possible degradation intermediates of BPA were identified by LC-MS and demonstrated to be nontoxic using ecological structure activity relationship modeling (ECOSAR). In a flow-through device for BPA degradation reaction, no deactivation of the catalyst was seen after 60 h and still remained 90 % remove efficiency after 100 h, which further renders it promising for actual water environmental remediation.

Abstract:Highly efficient single atom catalysts are critical to substantially promote for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to organic pollutant degradation, but it remains a challenge at present. Herein, single atom Mn anchored on N-doped porous carbon (SA-Mn-NSC) was synthesized by ball milling of Mn-doped carbon nitride and spirulina biochar to dominantly activate PMS. The precursor of carbon nitride and spirulina possessed a strong coordinating capability for Mn(II), facilitating the formation of highly dispersed nitrogen-coordinated Mn sites (Mn-N 4 ). The SA-Mn-NSC catalyst exhibited high activity and stability in the heterogeneous activation of PMS to degrade a wide range of pollutants within 10 min, showing an outstanding degradation rate constant of 0.31 min −1 in enrofloxacin (ENR) degradation. The high surface density of Mn-N 4 sites and abundant interconnected meso–macro pores were highly favorable for activating PMS to produce 1 O 2 and high-valent manganese (Mn(IV)) for pollutant degradation. This work offers a new pathway of using a low-cost and easily accessible single-atom catalysts (SACs) and could inspire more catalytic oxidation strategies.

Abstract:A high-efficient iron-based heterogeneous catalyst is desired to active peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Due to a large catalytic contribution of atomically dispersed Fe-Nx sites, single-atom iron–nitrogen-carbon catalysts exhibit superior performance in the catalytic activation of PMS. Herein, a sequence of Fe-N-C SACs with atomically dispersed Fe-Nx sites, FeSA-N-C and FeSA-N/C, were prepared from Fe-doped ZIF-8 and FePc@ZIF-8, respectively. Single-atom Fe-Nx sites were confirmed to be the main active sites for PMS activation. FeSA-N/C-20 with a higher density of Fe-Nx sites exhibited superior catalytic performance to N/C, FeSA-N-C, FeSA-N/C-15, and FeSA-N/C-25 for BPA degradation. Integrated with chemical quenching experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR), in-situ Raman spectra, and electrochemical analysis, a nonradical pathway was demonstrated to dominate the degradation of BPA in the PMS + FeSA-N/C-20 system. More importantly, the nature of this nonradical pathway was found to be an electron-transfer regime instead of a high-valent iron or singlet oxygenation process. The BPA was adsorbed onto the Fe-Nx site by a “donor–acceptor complex” mechanism to form a nonradical PMS* intermediate during the process. Benefiting from this mechanism, the PMS + FeSA-N/C-20 system showed wide pH adaptation and high resistance to inorganic anions.

Abstract:For boosting the intrinsic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) catalytic activity of single atom catalysts (SACs), we fabricate zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived Fe SAC with different nitrogen coordination numbers (denoted as Fe-N x /C) to boost organic pollutant oxidation. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy was undertaken to determine the coordination configuration of Fe–N path. As expected, the resultant Fe-N 3 /C exhibited more excellent PMS catalysis activity with a p-nitrophenol (4-NP) degradation kinetic rate constant (k obs ) of 0.061 min −1 that is 2.4-fold enhancement relative to the Fe-N 4 /C. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements and quenching tests confirmed the 1 O play the main role associated with high-valent Fe–oxo and a small amount of OH and SO 4 − species. Density functional calculations revealed that low coordinated Fe–N 3 sites prefer to form a bridge coordination bond structure of O-Fe-O with the adsorption sites of O2 and O1 in PMS molecule, exhibiting stronger interaction with the oxidant and better electron donating capability to enhance PMS activation comparing to common Fe-N 4 structure based on charge deformation density, electron localization function (ELF) and projected density of state (PDOS) analysis. These findings indicate that microstructure modulation is a useful avenue to prepare a high-performance Fenton-like SACs.

Abstract:Highly efficient single-atom catalysts (SACs) hold great potential for promoting peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to facilitate organic pollutant degradation but precisely regulating and enhancing their catalytic efficiency remains a challenge. Here, single Cu atom catalysts anchored on a series of ketoenamine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were developed as PMS activators via a facile dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma and wet chemical method. Based on the systematic engineering of photoelectric structures at the molecular level, the charge distribution was precisely regulated by introducing different functional groups (Cu@TpPa-X, where X= -(CH 3 ) 2 , -H, -CN). Among the obtained materials, Cu@TpPa-(CH 3 ) 2 possesses the best photocatalytic capability, and the mineralization (90%) of carbamazepine (CBZ) and the reaction rate constant (0.322 min −1 ) are comparable to those of the most advanced photocatalysts. Experiments and calculations demonstrate that the introduction of individual metal atoms increases the electron density at the active centre, and electron-donating groups accelerate the transfer of photogenerated carriers and improve the PMS adsorption to the material, which significantly improves the overall oxidation and mineralization kinetics. This work pioneers a novel approach for tailoring high-efficiency COF-based SACs, thus broadening their potential applications in photocatalysis.

Abstract:A series of copper-nitrogen co-hybrid porous carbon catalysts were prepared by pyrolysis of copper-doped ZIF-8 in argon atmosphere. Both the precursors and the corresponding pyrolysis products retained the polyhedral morphology of ZIF-8. The catalytic performance of the catalysts obtained at different Cu doping levels and pyrolysis temperatures for PMS activation was compared by bisphenol A (BPA) degradation experiment. Among them 5%Cu-NC(8) catalyst obtained by pyrolysis of 5%Cu-ZIF-8 at 950 °C showed the best catalytic performance. The catalytic mechanism of PMS activation catalyzed by 5%Cu-NC(8) was analyzed by quenching experiment, ESR and XPS. The degradation pathways of BPA in 5%Cu-NC(8)/PMS system were proposed on the basis of LC-MS analyses. Pyridine N (including Cu–N), graphite N, CO group and the valence change of Cu were recognized as the catalytic active sites for 5%Cu-NC(8). Both free radical and non-free radical processes were involved in BPA degradation, and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was identified to be the main active substance. The stable performance and low Cu leaching rate in recycling experiment indicated that 5%Cu-NC(8) had good reusability and stability. This study provided a new insight for the design of heterogeneous copper-nitrogen co-hybrid carbon catalysts.

Abstract:The atomic dispersed heterogeneous catalysts are attracting much research interests. Recently, multiple active sites (two, three or even more) exhibits all-round characters for regulation of intrinsic active sites. However, depth exploration of multiple active sites in persulfate activation etc fenton-like advanced oxidation process is still in its infancy. Herein, binary atomic dispersed active sites anchored in visible-light-responsive carbon nitride Co-Mn/CN catalyst was designed representatively. The characterization and theory calculation clarified the coordination environment of metallic center atoms and confirms its CoN4-MnN2 moiety. The unique coordinated geometry on the one hand highlights the synergy effect between photocatalysis and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, on the other hand promotes the form of metastable metal-PMS complex and subsequent activation process. Furthermore, the catalysts present efficient application to purify the oil spill pollutes water considering water quality, pH and durability etc. This work sheds light on the rational regulation of diatomic sites in photo-Fenton-like catalysts.

Abstract:Effective degradation of aquatic contaminants highly depends on the adsorption of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) on active sites of catalysts. However, the influence of PMS adsorption state on PMS activation remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the catalytic performance of a Cu-NC catalyst, composed of dispersed Cu atoms on a nitrogen-doped carbon skeleton, for the activation of PMS in decomposing bisphenol A (BPA). The Cu-NC-4 catalyst exhibited remarkable selectivity and efficiency, achieving a kinetic rate of 0.997 min−1 with over 99.9% BPA removal in just 3 min. Through various experiments and characterizations, we determined that the degradation process was primarily facilitated by electron transfer from BPA to Cu-NC. Furthermore, the dosing sequence of PMS and pollutants was found to be crucial in the system. Density functional theory (DFT) simulation revealed that PMS with bridging adsorption on the Cu site exhibited more favorable adsorption energy, leading to enhanced electron transfer and more efficient and selective destruction of electron donors. Based on these findings, we propose a mechanism in which the electron donor plays a crucial role in PMS activation, while the nearby Cu sites optimize the adsorption configuration of PMS, thereby boosting electron transfer. These two factors synergistically contribute to the efficient removal of pollutants.

Abstract:Carbon-based catalysts with heteroatom doping and hollow structures are desired for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Herein, dual-shelled Co, N, and S codoped hollow carbon nanocages were developed by wrapping zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) with trithiocyanuric acid (TCA) and performing subsequent carbonization. The optimal composite catalyst (Co-NC-CoS) exhibited excellent catalytic performance toward different organic pollutants. Almost complete removal of 4-NP (60 mg/L−1) was achieved within 20 min by 10 mg of catalyst and 0.2 g/L−1 peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Moreover, the catalyst showed good stability and reusability. The effects of catalyst and PMS dose, pollutant concentration, pH and common anions were investigated, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were studied by scavenger experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests. The results show that multidoped atoms S, Co and N all contributed to the degradation system. Several lines of evidence suggested that S could change the catalytic process from Co3+/Co2+ to Co3+/Co2+/Co0 reduction due to its low redox potential. Degradation was achieved through both radical and nonradical pathways, where sulfate radicals (SO4·̶), hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) were primary reactive species. Overall, this work may suggest that the novel multi heteroatom-doped catalysts with complex structures can be developed for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Due to the selectivity and environmental tolerance of non-radical reaction reactions, they have emerged as a promising way to treat special water bodies. Herein, we proposed a new non-radical reaction system that used a Cu and O co-doped g-C3N4 catalyst (CuO-CN) activated by peroxydisulfate (PDS) or peroxymonosulfate (PMS). In CuO-CN, Cu and O atoms were introduced into the structure of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) in an innovative configuration, resulting in a differentiated charge distribution around the Cu and O centres. The PDS/CuO-CN and PMS/CuO-CN systems could selectively degrade organic pollutants (e.g., bisphenol A, BPA) over a wide pH range (3–9), and the maximum BPA removal could reach 99%. For the PDS/CuO-CN system, the mechanism was hypothesized to involve the effective removal of BPA via electron transfer, and the PMS/CuO-CN system exploited the synergistic effect of singlet oxygen (1O2) and electron transfer. This study describes a novel process for effective PMS or PDS activation by CuO-CN to efficiently degrade organic pollutants via a non-radical pathway.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes synergistically activated by dual atom catalysts (DACs) have become a cutting-edge technology for environmental remediation. Herein, a Ni-Co-2H-MoS 2 (NCMS) DAC was successfully prepared by introducing bimetals (Ni and Co) into the framework of the 2H-MoS 2 co-catalyst through a host–guest strategy. The NCMS/PMS catalysis system exhibits significant decontamination performance for tetracycline, and its removal efficiency of 99.6% is 3.7 times and 4.0 times higher than that of the Ni-2H-MoS 2 /PMS and Co-2H-MoS 2 /PMS single atom catalysts, respectively. Besides, density functional theory (DFT) was employed to disclosure the role of the active sites of NCMS DAC, investigate the influence of heteronuclear diatomic doping on electron aggregation and delocalization, and analyze the mechanism of PMS activation and TC degradation. Experimental results and theoretical simulations demonstrate that Ni and Co atoms of NCMS exert a reasonable regulation effect on the coordination environment and electronic structure, thereby promoting PMS activation with a unique synergy mode. The introduction of Ni lowers the adsorption energy barrier of PMS on the DAC, facilitating subsequent PMS activation. Meanwhile, the interaction between Co and Mo accelerates valence restoration and evolution of Co 2+ /Co 3+ and Mo 4+ / Mo 5+ / Mo 6+ , further improving catalytic activity. This work provides a novel strategy for the on-demand design of Fenton-like reactions by regulating microenvironment of the catalyst.

Abstract:In the reaction systems involving peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, the degradation of organic pollutants is influenced by the distinct roles played by the oxidation of free radicals and non-free radicals. The synergistic effect resulting from both oxidation pathways is often more efficient compared to a single oxidation pathway, as it allows for the optimal utilization of oxidation capacity and adaptation to complex reaction environments. Nitrogen-doped carbon substrates hosting single-atom catalysts (SACs) are anticipated to serve as an optimal platform for managing the dual oxidation pathways in the PMS activation reaction. This is attributed to the availability of numerous reaction sites that meet the activation requirements. However, there's a lack of substantial reports on this subject. Herein, we synthesized a series of single-atoms Fe nitrogen-doped carbon catalysts with different coordination structures by adjusting the coordination numbers between Fe and N atoms. It is used to investigate the reaction pattern of PMS over SACs, so as to enhance the catalytic efficacy of SACs through distinct coordination structures. The experimental and theoretical results indicate that PMS functions as both an electron receiver and provider on FeN x /C catalysts. Moreover, the specific arrangement of the Fe-N-C structure influences the exchange of electrons between the catalysts and PMS. Hence, the co-oxidation pathway of free radicals (OH, SO 4 − and O 2 − ) and non-free radicals ( 1 O 2 ) can be modulated by altering the coordination number of Fe and N atoms during PMS activation. The elimination efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride was significantly enhanced due to the abundance of both free radical and non-free radical species generated in the FeN 3 /C/PMS reaction system, exhibiting a degradation kinetic constant of 0.564 min −1 . In addition, it showed promising potential for application in practical wastewater degradation, exhibiting high anti-interference to general environmental disturbances (such as humic acid, chloride ions, bicarbonate ions and nitrate ions).

Abstract:Developing efficient heterogeneous catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is extraordinarily desirable in water purification. In this work, a well-defined core-shell copper-cobalt-zinc oxides consisting of Cu0.92Co2.08O4 and ZnCo2O4 wrapped by carbon (CuCoZnO/C) was fabricated by a simple one-step calcination using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as templates. The as-obtained catalysts were fully characterized and utilized to activate PMS for phenol degradation, and almost 100% degradation efficiency could be achieved within 10 min. The distinct hollow structure allowed the high instantaneous concentration of organic pollutant in a microenvironment, thus providing a driving force to improve the reaction rate. Owing to the mesoporous and adsorptive carbon as well as active Cu0.92Co2.08O4 shell, most SO4 center dot- radical was confined to catalyst surface immediately once produced rather than release into the bulk solution, making the enriched reactant molecules contact active sites more easily. Further investigation found that both surface-bound SO4 center dot- and O-1(2) were dominantly participated in the catalytic process, achieving an ultrafast pollutant degradation. Abstract:Direct electron-transfer dominated organic pollutant removal technology is considered an economical and promising method for selective water and wastewater treatment. However, in the heterogeneous catalysis of activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate the surface-bound PMS*, reactive oxygen species such as sulfate radical, hydroxyl radical, and singlet oxygen are easily produced at the same time, resulting in waste of PMS. Herein, we reported an efficient zinc single-atom catalyst (Zn-N@C) that could activate PMS to induce an electron-transfer mechanism and degrade 95.7% sulfamethoxazole (SMX) within 20 min, which was superior to most of the advanced oxidation systems that have been reported for the removal of SMX. The negligible effect of anions and humic acid in water on Zn-N@C/PMS systems made it potential for practical application. Experiments and density functional theory calculations revealed that ZnN4 as the active site for PMS activation, and the enhanced redox potential of Zn-N@C/PMS* complexes improved the removal efficiency of SMX by demonstrating the increased work function and enlarged electron density near the Fermi level of Zn-N@C after PMS adsorption. SMX was degraded predominately via SO2 extrusion, hydroxylation, and cleavage of the S–N and S–C bonds. The diminished ecotoxicity of transformation products suggested a controlled risk of SMX degradation during the Zn-N@C/PMS treatment process. This study expands the research scope of transitional metal-based single-atom catalysts to zinc on PMS activation and deepens the understanding of electron-transfer oxidation pathways.

Abstract:A unique Co─N─C heterostructure with N defects (Nv) within the hollow structure is assembled for boosting the PMS utilization and activation, together with accelerating the pollutant elimination. Experimental and theoretical simulations demonstrate that the unique charge distribution strengthens the PMS adsorption due to the introduction of Nv adjacent to Co─N4, triggering the high generation of 1O2. Metal nitrogen carbon (MNC)‐based Fenton reactions leveraged with robust peroxymonosulfate (PMS) interaction effectively guarantee the elimination of refractory contaminants, yet the precise design of local microenvironment of MNC to couple with the multiple PMS activation pose major challenges. Herein, a porous Co single‐atom catalyst (SAC) with nitrogen defects (Nv) (MCo/NC‐6) is fabricated to initiate PMS oxidation reaction. The weaker but richer coordination between Co and N in the precursor facilitates the formation of Nv and porous structure during pyrolysis, achieving simultaneously electronic structure and spatial distribution tuning. Compared with the Co SAC (ZCo/NC‐6), the optimized MCo/NC‐6 significantly increase the bisphenol A (BPA) reactivity (k = 0.63 min−1), PMS utilization (78%), and singlet oxygen (1O2) yield (100%) by 15.3, 2.4, and 2.6 times, respectively. Experimental analyses and theoretical calculations reveal that the Co─N─C coordination regulated by both micro space and neighboring Nv is endowed high‐mobility electrons, thus synergistically facilitating rapid generation and efficient utilization of 1O2. This work promises new opportunities for the design of local microenvironments‐regulated SACs, and charts new trajectories in complex Fenton‐like systems.

Abstract:The trade-off of Fenton-like catalysts in activity and stability remains a challenge in practical remediation applications. In this work, we successfully synthesized an efficient and stable catalyst comprised of single nickel (Ni) atoms dispersed on N-doped porous carbon (named Ni-SAs@CN) through a simple micropore confinement strategy. The catalyst exhibited outstanding catalytic performance with 25.8 min-1 turnover frequency for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation toward degradation of various organic pollutants (e.g., antibiotics, dyes, and plasticizers) in a wide pH range (4.5-10.8). Electron paramagnetic resonance and in situ Raman analyses demonstrated that both radical (including SO4•- and •OH) and Ni-PMS* dominated nonradical (via electron transfer) pathways played pivotal role in the decomposition of organics. The X-ray adsorption fine structure analysis and computational pieces of evidence demonstrate that the atomically dispersed NiN4 coordination is the intrinsic catalytic site for PMS activation. Meanwhile, pyrrolic N acts as a functional site to anchor target contaminants to the surface region for oxidation. In this process which is benefited from the dual active sites, the target contaminants were degraded via combined radical and nonradical pathways, which significantly boost the overall oxidation and mineralization kinetics.

Abstract:Fenton-like technology is a green pathway for removing recalcitrant organic pollutants from the environment. However, low catalytic efficiency and poor stability hinder the development of Fenton-like technology as a result of the lack of effective catalysts. Here, we report a highly efficient and stable Fenton-like catalyst based on isolated single Mn atom anchored on N-doped porous carbon. The catalyst exhibits high activity and stability in the heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for organic pollutant degradation, showing an outstanding turnover frequency of greater than 5.69 min−1 in bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. A variety of analytical techniques as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the unique N-coordinated single Mn atom (MnN4) serves as a highly catalytically active site for PMS activation, while the adjacent pyrrolic N site acts as an adsorption site for the target organic molecules. The ultra-high catalytic activity of single Mn atom catalyst can be attributed to its fantastic dual reaction sites, which remarkably shorten the migration distance from the radical to the adsorbed organic molecules.
