Abstract:Precisely regulating the coordination microenvironment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) to achieve enhanced reactivity is significant and desired but still in its infancy. Herein, a coordination-tuned and pyrolysis-free strategy is reported for the fabrication of a Fenton-like SAC containing the axial five-coordinated configuration (Fe–N5). The N species on the N-doped graphene act as anchoring points for iron phthalocyanine (a typical Fe–N4 complex) to obtain isolated Fe–N5 sites, which significantly modulates the electronic state of Fe atoms and lowers the H2O2 activation barrier for •OH production. Moreover, the enriched pyridinic N serve as contaminant adsorption sites shortening •OH diffusion distance, establishing a dual-site reaction mechanism with Fe–N5 sites. As such, the Fe–N5 catalyst exhibits exceptional Fenton activity towards catalytic oxidation of phenol (k = 0.180 min−1). Our work unravels the dependence of Fenton activity on the single-atom coordination environment and provides a platform for precise engineering of SACs.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed transition metal catalysts haveserved aspromising candidates to substitute noble metals in energy conversion.A majority of carbon-supported transition metal single-atom catalysts(SACs) have been synthesized via the high-temperature sintering method,in which the complex heating and cooling processes are time- and energy-consuming.Herein, we have developed a simple and highly effective microwave-assistedheating method to prepare a series of isolated transition metal SACsanchored on a N,S-codoped nanocarbon matrix, which are denoted asM-NSC-MW, M = Fe, Zn, Co, and Ni. Among the various M-NSC-MW, Fe-NSC-MWpossesses the highest ORR electrochemical activity in alkaline electrolytes.Its onset potential (E (onset)) is 0.955V, and its half-wave potential (E (1/2))can reach 0.852 V, both of which are the same as those of commercialPt/C. Moreover, Fe-NSC-MW also exhibits much superior ORR catalyticefficiency than conventional pyrolysis samples. It is worth notingthat Zn-NSC-MW is prepared for the first time, and it alsoshows a high ORR performance with an E (onset) of 0.945 V and an E (1/2) of 0.832 V. Thiswork has revealed the general application of the microwave-assistedheating method to prepare well-dispersed transition metal SACs anchoredon the N,S-codoped graphene/carbon hybrid matrix.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are considered one of the promising strategies to achieve efficient energy conver-sion, due to their advantage of both maximum atomic utilization and minimum catalyst cost. However, finding a balance between increasing the atom loading and preventing the agglomeration of metal single atoms is a current research hotspot. Herein, we have developed single-atom cobalt embedded in N-doped carbon nanoboxes as high-efficiency bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting in alkaline/acidic electrolytes. Due to the reliable metal-nonmetal bonds between the Co single atom and the substrate carbon, where the uniformly dispersed Co atoms could be effectively and stably riveted on the carbon nanoboxes, and the as-prepared elec-trocatalyst possesses high mass loading of single Co atoms (similar to 10.2 wt%). In addition, the systematic X-ray ab-sorption fine structure (XAFS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to further investigate the relationship between coordination number, configuration and electrocatalytic properties of Co single atoms and N atoms. Based on the above results, the presence of Co atoms induces the formation of pyrr-N and possesses Co@CNB-N4 configuration with HER overpotential of 45 mV, comparable to Pt/C (20 wt%). As for OER, Co@CNB-N4 still has satisfactory catalytic performance, superior to the benchmark catalyst RuO2. Thus, this work builds a bridge to understand the impact of metal single atoms and substrate configuration on catalytic performance and opens a door to the successful synthesis of SACs with high loading of non-precious metal atoms, high atomic utilization and electrocatalytic activity.

Turning Microenvironments of Porous Co─N─C Catalysts Enable Efficient Fenton‐Like Reaction

Abstract:A unique Co─N─C heterostructure with N defects (Nv) within the hollow structure is assembled for boosting the PMS utilization and activation, together with accelerating the pollutant elimination. Experimental and theoretical simulations demonstrate that the unique charge distribution strengthens the PMS adsorption due to the introduction of Nv adjacent to Co─N4, triggering the high generation of 1O2. Metal nitrogen carbon (MNC)‐based Fenton reactions leveraged with robust peroxymonosulfate (PMS) interaction effectively guarantee the elimination of refractory contaminants, yet the precise design of local microenvironment of MNC to couple with the multiple PMS activation pose major challenges. Herein, a porous Co single‐atom catalyst (SAC) with nitrogen defects (Nv) (MCo/NC‐6) is fabricated to initiate PMS oxidation reaction. The weaker but richer coordination between Co and N in the precursor facilitates the formation of Nv and porous structure during pyrolysis, achieving simultaneously electronic structure and spatial distribution tuning. Compared with the Co SAC (ZCo/NC‐6), the optimized MCo/NC‐6 significantly increase the bisphenol A (BPA) reactivity (k = 0.63 min−1), PMS utilization (78%), and singlet oxygen (1O2) yield (100%) by 15.3, 2.4, and 2.6 times, respectively. Experimental analyses and theoretical calculations reveal that the Co─N─C coordination regulated by both micro space and neighboring Nv is endowed high‐mobility electrons, thus synergistically facilitating rapid generation and efficient utilization of 1O2. This work promises new opportunities for the design of local microenvironments‐regulated SACs, and charts new trajectories in complex Fenton‐like systems.

Abstract:Modulation of nitrogen coordination number can tune the electron density of single Co atoms in the atomic Copyridinic NC center, which governs the Fenton‐like performance of single‐atom Co catalysts (CoNx, x = 2, 3, and 4) and hence accounts for the coordination number dependent catalytic activity, namely, the lower the coordination number, the higher the specific activity. Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) are widely investigated in Fenton‐like reactions for environmental remediation, wherein their catalytic performance can be further improved by coordination structure modulation, but the relevant report is rare. Herein, a series of atomically dispersed cobalt catalysts with diverse coordination numbers (denoted as CoNx, x represents nitrogen coordination number) are synthesized and their peroxymonosulfate (PMS) conversion performance is explored. The catalytic specific activity of CoNx is found to be dependent on coordination number of single atomic Co sites, where the lowest‐coordinated CoN2 catalyst exhibits the highest specific activity in PMS activation, followed by under‐coordinated CoN3 and normal CoN4. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that reducing coordination number can increase the electron density of single Co atom in CoNx, which governs the Fenton‐like performance of CoNx catalysts. Specifically, the entire Co–pyridinic NC motif serves as active centers for PMS conversion, where the single Co atom, and pyridinic N‐bonded C atoms along with nitrogen vacancy neighboring the unsaturated Co–pyridinic N2 moiety account for PMS reduction and oxidation toward radical and singlet oxygen (1O2) generation, respectively. These findings provide a useful avenue to coordination number regulation of SACs for environmental applications.

Abstract:The coordination environment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) plays a crucial role in determining the energy conversion efficiency of related electrochemical devices. Herein, the coordination environment of a series of Co-based SACs (Co1-SACs) was tuned to correlate the chemical structures of these catalysts with their electrocatalytic performance. The optimized Co1-SACs containing Co-S2N2 sites are electrocatalytically active in both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which were carried out in alkaline media. The Co1-SACs containing Co-S2N2 sites exhibit high ORR activity, with an onset potential of 0.99 V vs RHE and good stability, as well as have promising application in a zinc-oxygen battery with a high power density (260 mW cm–2) and open-circuit voltage (1.50 V), remarkable tolerance to large current density, and long-term operation. The ORR of the Co-S2N2 site is attributed to the optimized electron density of the Co atom through its cocoordination with adjacent S and N atoms. Moreover, the Co1-SACs efficiently catalyze the HER, exhibiting a low overpotential (121 mV at 20 mA cm–2), a low Tafel slope (47 mV dec–1), and long-term stability. Abstract:This article summarizes various preparation methods of single‐atom cobalt catalysts (Co SACs) and their applications in the fields of organic synthesis and environmental remediation. The review reveals the reaction mechanisms through representative cases and emphasizes the effect of microenvironment regulation on catalytic performance, and proposes some prospects. The development of high‐performance catalysts plays a crucial role in facilitating chemical production and reducing environmental contamination. Single‐atom catalysts (SACs), a class of catalysts that bridge the gap between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, have garnered increasing attention because of their unique activity, selectivity, and stability in many pivotal reactions. Meanwhile, the scarcity of precious metal SACs calls for the arrival of cost‐effective SACs. Cobalt, as a common non‐noble metal, possesses tremendous potential in the field of single‐atom catalysis. Despite their potential, reviews about single‐atom Co catalysts (Co‐SACs) are lacking. Accordingly, this review thoroughly summarized various preparation methodologies of Co‐SACs, particularly pyrolysis; its application in the specific domain of organic synthesis and environmental remediation is discussed as well. The structure–activity relationship and potential catalytic mechanism of Co‐SACs are elucidated through some representative reactions. The imminent challenges and development prospects of Co‐SACs are discussed in detail. The findings and insights provided herein can guide further exploration and development in this charming area of catalyst design, leading to the realization of efficient and sustainable catalytic processes.

Synergy Enhancement of Co Single Atoms and Asymmetric Subnanoclusters for Fenton-like Activation

Abstract:As a new water treatment technology, Fenton-like reaction has great potential. In this study, we successfully prepared an excellent Fenton-like catalyst, which is composed of cobalt monoatoms and asymmetric subnanoclusters (labeled CoSA/Clu-C2N), and exhibits excellent peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation reactivity. By directly comparing the catalytic properties of CoSA-C2N and CoSA/Clu-C2N, the synergistic effects of coasymmetric Co subclusters and Co atoms on the activation of PMS and degradation of organic micropollutants were investigated. The results showed that CoSA/Clu-C2N had higher degradation rates of carbamazepine (CBZ), antipyrine (AT) and chlorobenzoic acid (CA) when combined with active oxidant PMS. The cyclic frequency of CBZ was 5.4 min−1, which was twice as high as the catalytic constant of CoSA-C2N (2.4 min−1). The results show that CoSA/Clu-C2N cobalt subnanoclusters and cobalt single atom can synergistically improve the catalytic performance of activated PMS oxidation of micropollutants in water. In addition, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technology has proved that the introduction of Co subnano clusters in CoSA/Clu-C2N is conducive to the production of singlet oxygen (1O2), thereby improving the efficiency of pollutant oxidation. This work lays a solid foundation for the future design of advanced multifunctional catalysts by carefully regulating and combining monmetallic atoms and metal subnanoclusters.
Regulating the local electron density and adsorption energy of COF-based single copper sites for highly efficient Fenton-like photo-oxidation

Abstract:Highly efficient single-atom catalysts (SACs) hold great potential for promoting peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to facilitate organic pollutant degradation but precisely regulating and enhancing their catalytic efficiency remains a challenge. Here, single Cu atom catalysts anchored on a series of ketoenamine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were developed as PMS activators via a facile dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma and wet chemical method. Based on the systematic engineering of photoelectric structures at the molecular level, the charge distribution was precisely regulated by introducing different functional groups (Cu@TpPa-X, where X= -(CH 3 ) 2 , -H, -CN). Among the obtained materials, Cu@TpPa-(CH 3 ) 2 possesses the best photocatalytic capability, and the mineralization (90%) of carbamazepine (CBZ) and the reaction rate constant (0.322 min −1 ) are comparable to those of the most advanced photocatalysts. Experiments and calculations demonstrate that the introduction of individual metal atoms increases the electron density at the active centre, and electron-donating groups accelerate the transfer of photogenerated carriers and improve the PMS adsorption to the material, which significantly improves the overall oxidation and mineralization kinetics. This work pioneers a novel approach for tailoring high-efficiency COF-based SACs, thus broadening their potential applications in photocatalysis.

Abstract:Simultaneous regulation of the coordination environment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) and engineering architectures with efficient exposed active sites are efficient strategies for boosting peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. We isolated cobalt atoms with dual nitrogen and oxygen coordination (Co-N3O1) on oxygen-doped tubular carbon nitride (TCN) by pyrolyzing a hydrogen-bonded cyanuric acid melamine-cobalt acetate precursor. The theoretically constructed Co-N3O1 moiety on TCN exhibited an impressive mass activity of 7.61x10(5) min(-1) mol(-1) with high O-1(2) selectivity. Theoretical calculations revealed that the cobalt single atoms occupied a dual nitrogen and oxygen coordination environment, and that PMS adsorption was promoted and energy barriers reduced for the key *O intermediate that produced O-1(2). The catalysts were attached to a widely used poly(vinylidene fluoride) microfiltration membrane to deliver an antibiotic wastewater treatment system with 97.5 % ciprofloxacin rejection over 10 hours, thereby revealing the suitability of the membrane for industrial applications.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) exhibit intriguing performance in electrocatalysis owing to their maximized atom utilizations and unique electronic structures, but effective anchoring metal atoms with defined coordination structure on hierarchical integrated electrode remain a challenge. Herein, a fast and facial flame-assisted strategy is developed to construct oxygen-coordinated SACs on integrated carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays with promising applications in electrocatalysis. Density functional theory calculations show that oxygen in carbon substrate imparts homogeneous sites for the efficient anchoring of metal atoms, thereby enabling SACs to disperse uniformly and firmly and thus bringing optimized activities. Moreover, the integrated CNT array with abundant oxygen-containing groups is constructed and has been used as an efficient matrix for anchoring metal atoms (CNT-O@M) via a flame-assisted method. The as-prepared CNT-O@M (M = Co and Pt as typical examples) shows excellent activities in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction with utilization of active site as high as 75.7%, which is superior to the reported SACs. Particularly, the performance of CNT-O@M can maintain stably under various harsh conditions, showing a promising prospect in the long-time applications. The methodology and concept proposed in this work could be extended to the synthesis of a variety of integrated SACs for efficient electrocatalysis.

Abstract:In Fenton-like reactions, high-valent cobalt-oxo (CoIV=O) has attracted increasing interests due to high redox potential, long lifetime, and anti-interference properties, but its generation is hindered by the electron repulsion between the electron rich oxo- and cobalt centers. Here, we demonstrate CoIV=O generation from peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation over cobalt single-atom catalysts (Co-SACs) using in-situ Co K-edge X-ray absorption spectra, and discern that CoIV=O generation is dependent on the support work-function (WF) due to the strong electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI). Supports with a high WF value like anatase-TiO2 facilitate the binding of PMS-terminal oxo-ligand to Co sites by extracting Co-d electrons, thus decreasing the generation barrier for the critical intermediate (Co-OOSO32-). The Co atoms anchored on anatase-TiO2 (Co-TiO2) exhibited enhanced CoIV=O generation and superior activity for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation during PMS activation. The normalized steady-state concentration of CoIV=O in Co-TiO2/PMS system was three orders of magnitude higher than that of free radicals, and 1.3- to 11-fold higher than that generated in other Co-SACs/PMS systems. Co-TiO2/PMS sustained efficient removal of SMX with minimal Co2+ leaching under continuous flow operation, suggesting its attractive water purification potential. Overall, these results underscore the significance of support selection for enhanced generation of high-valent metal-oxo species and efficient PMS activation in supported metal SACs.

Abstract:The optimization of the single-atom catalysts (SACs) performance has been the hot spots for years. It is widely acknowledged that the incorporation of adjacent single-atom sites (diatomic catalysts (DACs)) can enable synergistic effects, which can be used in cascade catalysis, dual-function catalysis, and performance regulation of intrinsic active sites. The DACs have been widely applied in CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), etc, however, limited in Fenton or Fenton-like reactions. This perspective summarized the mostly advanced achievements in this field, followed by the proposed opportunities in further research, including regulation of magnetic moment, inter-atomic distance effect, strain engineering, atomic clusters (ACs)/nanoparticles (NPs) modification, etc. It is demonstrated that this perspective can contribute to the DACs application in Fenton or Fenton-like reactions with innovative design and mechanisms being put forward.

Abstract:Novel single-atom catalysts (SACs) have become the frontier materials in the field of environmental remediation, specially, wastewater purification, because of their nearly 100% ultra-high atomic utilization and excellent properties. SACs used in Fenton-like catalytic reactions can activate various peroxides (such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), ozone (O3), persulfate (PSs)) to release active radicals and non-radicals acting on target pollutants and realize their decomposition and mineralization. Among them, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in PSs system has gradually become one of the most concerned oxidants in Fenton-like process due to the asymmetry of molecular structure and the characteristics of easy storage and transportation. Focusing on a multiple of proposed strategies for the synthesis and performance regulation of Fenton-like SACs, it is confirmed that the coordination anchoring between isolated metal atoms and support/carrier enhances the structural robustness and chemical stability of the catalyst, and optimizes the catalytic activity and kinetics. Moreover, the adjustability of SACs coordination environment and electronic properties can improve other catalytic properties of the catalyst, such as cycle stability and selectivity. In order to systematically explain the relationship between active center, catalyst performance and the corresponding potential catalytic mechanism, this paper focuses on the representative scientific work on the preparation strategy, catalytic application and performance regulation of Fenton-like SACs. The typical Fenton-like SACs reaction processes and catalytic mechanisms for the degradation of refractory organic compounds in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) were reviewed. Finally, the future development and challenges of Fenton-like SACs were prospected.

Abstract:Abstract Single atom catalysts (SACs) have been growing as an emerging “hot” topic in environmental remediation. Their performance can be rationally optimized via modulating spatial coordination configuration and the porous structure of SACs, which is still challenging. Herein, a novel Si, N co‐coordinated cobalt SAC (p‐CoSi 1 N 3 @D) with 3D free standing architecture is tailored via employing natural mineral (diatomite) as a Si source and porous template. Theoretical calculations and experimental analysis reveal that the substitution of N by Si dramatically accelerates the interaction and electron transfer between peroxymonosulfate and the Co single atom center. Moreover, p‐CoSi 1 N 3 @D inherits the hierarchically porous architecture of diatomite, providing more accessible cobalt sites and open diffusion channels for peroxymonosulfate and contaminants in water treatment applications. Thanks to optimal coordination structure and porous architecture, p‐CoSi 1 N 3 @D can serve as a highly active catalyst for peroxymonosulfate activation, with a turnover frequency of 299.8 min −1 for bisphenol A degradation, surpassing those of catalysts with transition metal SACs or oxides in the disclosed literature. This work provides a novel strategy for the development of SACs for wastewater reclamation, and deepens the understanding of the significant role of templates in spatial coordination configuration of SACs.
