Abstract:This research investigated two proposed modified biofilm carriers' performances in treating recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) wastewater under different salinities (12%o, 26%o, and 35%o) for about 92 days. Three moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs; R1, R2, and R3) were filled with unmodified novel sponge biocarriers (SB) served as a control, modified novel SB with ferrous oxalate (C2FeO4@SB), and modified novel SB with combined ferrous oxalate and activated carbon (C2FeO4-AC@SB), respectively. Under the highest saline condition, a significantly higher ammonia removal efficiency of 98.86 +/- 0.7% (p > 0.05) was obtained in R3, whereas R2 and R1 yielded 95.18 +/- 2.8% and 91.66 +/- 1.5%, respectively. Microbial analysis showed that Vibrio, Ruegeria, Formosa, Thalassospira, and Denitromonas were predominant genera, strictly halophilic heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria involved in nitrogen removal. In conclusion, the synergistic effects of novel sponge, C2FeO4 and AC accelerated biofilm formations and stability, subsequently enhanced the removal of ammonia from the mariculture RAS wastewater by the C2FeO4-AC@SB carriers in R3.

Abstract:The performance of pollutant removals, activated sludge characteristics, and microbial communities of two biofilm membrane bioreactors coupled with pre-anoxic tanks (BF-AO-MBRs) (one using fiber bundle bio-carriers (FB-MBR) and the other using suspended bio-carriers (MB-MBR)) were compared at the salinity between zero and 60 g/L. At all salinities, three bioreactors showed good COD average removal efficiencies (> 94.1%), and FB-MBR showed the best TN removal efficiency (90.4% at 30 g/L salinity). Moreover, FB-MBR had the faster process start-up time and better salt shock resistance. At high salinities (30-60 g/L), more extracellular polymeric substances were produced by the BF-AO-MBRs to avoid the penetration of salt and protect the bacterial community. Because of the different attachment patterns of biofilms, the microbial community structure in the FB-MBR exposed to 30 g/L salinity had higher nitrite-oxidizing/ammonia-oxidizing bacteria ratio (6.44) with more abundance of denitrifiers, which contribute to higher TN removal efficiency and lower nitrite accumulation.
Application of isolated halophilic microorganisms suspended and immobilized on walnut shell as biocarrier for treatment of oilfield produced water

Abstract:Salinity expressed as total dissolved solids (TDS), is the most challenging parameter in bioremediation of produced water which may inhibit the microbial activities and cause sedimentation problems. The present study explores the feasibility of using walnut shell as an inexpensive and accessible adsorbent-carrier for the immobilization of isolated halophilic microorganisms for treatment of synthetic oilfield produced water. The moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) was examined with influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations from 900 to 3600 mg L-1, TDS concentrations from 35,000-200,000 mg L-1, and cycle times from 24 to 72 h. Comparison of the MBBR with the conventional sequencing batch reactor (SBR) indicated that both systems operated at lower influent COD and TDS concentrations satisfactorily; but at higher TDSs (above 150,000 mg L-1) the MBBR was more resistant to the shocks of toxicity (salinity) and organic load relative to the SBR. Also, the effluent turbidity was lower and the free sludge settling property was more favorable in the MBBR with average sludge volume index (SVI) of 38.8 mL g-1 compared to the SBR with SVI of 98.09 mL g-1. Microbial identification confirmed the presence of eight dominant halophilic species which were hydrocarbon degraders and/or denitrifiers.

Abstract:Produced water (PW) from oil and gas exploration adversely affects aquatic life and living organisms, necessitating treatment before discharge to meet effluent permissible limits. This study first used activated sludge to pretreat PW in a sequential batch reactor (SBR). The pretreated PW then entered a 13 L photobioreactor (PBR) containing Scenedesmus obliquus microalgae culture. Initially, 10% of the PW mixed with 90% microalgae culture in the PBR. After the exponential growth of the microalgae, an additional 25% of PW was added to the PBR without extra nutrients. This study reported the growth performance of microalgae in the PBR as well as the reduction in effluent's total organic carbon (TOC), total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), and heavy metals content. The results demonstrated removal efficiencies of 64% for TOC, 49.8% for TDS, and 49.1% for EC. The results also showed reductions in barium, iron, and manganese in the effluent by 95, 76, and 52%, respectively.

Abstract:Nature-based solutions are encouraged for treating oilfield produced water from oil and gas extraction, a crucial undertaking that aligns with the Canadian oil sands industry's ambitious goal of zero waste, and the globally recognized Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) pertaining to water conservation and ecosystem preservation. This study explored the use of peat-mineral mix (PMM), a leftover of inevitable oil sands mining, for treating low and high-strength wastewaters during biofiltration, which contained large molecular weight (44.3 kDa), which include alcohols, aliphatics, aromatics, and ketones, and can impart high toxicity to both fauna and flora (MicroTox: 99 %). The breakthrough curve indicated an effective initial adsorption phase driven by advection within the column dynamics. For complete organics removal and mechanistic insights, the wastewater was re-circulated in a continuous mode for up to 42 days. Here, we found that chemical oxygen demand was reduced from ∼85,000 mg/L to ∼965 mg/L). Kinetics investigations along with physicochemical characterization of PMM and wastewater suggested that chemisorption and anaerobic digestion contributed to the overall removal of contaminants. Chemisorption, led by hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions, was the dominant mechanism, with a limited contribution from physical adsorption (surface area: 2.85 m2/g). The microbial community within the PMM bed was rich/diverse (Shannon > 6.0; Chao1 > 600), with ∼ 50 % unclassified phylotypes representing 'microbial dark matter'. High electric conductivity (332.1 μS cm −1 ) of PMM and the presence of Geobacter , syntrophs, and Methanosaeta suggest that direct interspecies electron transfer was likely occurring during anaerobic digestion. Both low and high-strength wastewaters showed effective removal of dissolved organics (e.g., naphthenic acids, acid extractable fraction, oil and grease content), nutrients, and potentially toxic metals. The successful use of PMM in treating oilfield produced water offers promising avenues for embracing nature-based remediation solutions at oil refining sites.

Abstract:In this study, efficient photosynthetic bacteria (PSB)-GO/PVDF membrane photo-bioreactor (MPBR) combined with heterogeneous Fenton fluidized bed was built and successfully applied for treatment of actual refractory seafood-processing wastewater with extremely high salinity. As effective pre-treatment, heterogeneous Fenton was designed for removing non-biodegradable organics and reducing iron-sludge discharge. In MPBR, GO/PVDF membrane fabricated by chemical grafting GO nanosheets was first used for salt-tolerated PSB harvest. Compared with original PVDF membrane, GO/PVDF membrane exhibited enhanced hydrophilicity, better permeability (4.4 times) and attractive flux recover rate (94%), which was attributed to remarkable reduction in hydrophobic proteins amount of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Importantly, COD and NH3-N removal efficiency of MPBR with GO/PVDF membrane were kept about 95 and 98%, respectively, and average biomass productivity reached as high as 105 mg/L·d. This study provides a promising and economical way to build efficient MBR combined with new materials for high salinity hazardous wastewater treatment.
A full-scale process for produced water treatment on offshore oilfield: Reduction of organic pollutants dominated by hydrocarbons

Abstract:Offshore oil production, which is a significant source of petroleum, has recently caused extensive concern. Produced water (PW) is the highest-volume byproduct of oil and gas production. The organic pollutants dominated by hydrocarbons, namely oil, in PW are the major concerns to researchers because of the adverse effects to the marine ecosystem. In industrial processes, the oil is needed to be separated by individual or cooperative use of separation technologies, such as gravity settlement, enhanced gravity settlement, and hydrocyclones. However, these conventional technologies cannot reach the separation requirements in a compact space under extreme conditions, such as emulsification and large volumes of PW. To improve the treatment efficiency, decrease the occupation of space, the practical use of a full-scale PW treatment process was proposed and investigated in the Bohai Sea, China. The oil content of PW after treatment with the full-scale process was less than 20 mg·L-1, alongside a reduction in the chemical dosage concentration (over 40% and 60% for reverse demulsifier and water clarifier, respectively) compared with the conventional process. Besides, an increase in the amount of produced liquid and PW of over 50% and 40% was achieved, respectively, generating a 30000 m3·a-1 growth in oil production in this single wellhead platform. The organic compounds and relative concentrations of these compounds were analyzed in this full-scale practical application. Hydrocarbons were the major organic pollutants in PW. Approximately 100 kinds of organic compounds that were detected in the influent of the process were reduced to 8 in the effluent with a separation efficiency over 90%, which made the PW cleaner to the marine environment. The simultaneous separation of alkanes and slightly soluble organics in PW can be explained by rotation and internal circulation, which provides a possible mechanism by which slightly soluble materials in major phase could be transferred from major phase to dispersed phased, in which the materials have a significantly higher solubility. This study provided an attractive strategy to answer the ecological menace caused by the hydrocarbon exploitation in offshore oilfields, to the benefit of both the economy and the environment.

Abstract:This paper used a moving bed biofilm reactor( MBBR) to test and analyze aquaculture wastewater treatment. Results indicated that reactor started- up quickly and operated stably in the process of simulated wastewater treatment using MBBR. The removal efficiency for both chemical oxygen demand( COD) and ammonia nitrogen was over 80%,and it reached 50% for total phosphorous( TP),when hydraulic retention time( HRT) was 8 h and DO remained 2. 0 ～ 3. 0 mg·L- 1. Under the condition of organic loading at( 0. 76 ± 0. 03) kg·m- 3·d- 1,the average removal efficiency of total nitrogen( TN) and ammonia was 71. 73% and 98. 42%,respectively,representing the best removal results among all operation periods. To achieve better TN removal rate,organic loading should keep no lower than 0. 5 kg·m- 3·d- 1. TN removal efficiency reached the maximum when dissolved oxygen( DO) was at( 3.00 ±0. 25) mg·L- 1,which was the most suitable to both nitrification and denitrification reactions. To maintain the high removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen and reduce the nitrite accumulation,DO should keep no less than 2. 0 mg·L- 1in the reactor. Shorter HRT decreased the ammonia removal efficiency and could cause nitrite accumulation. When MBBR was operated in sequencing mode,the removal efficiency of TP was better than that in continuous operation mode. However,nitrite content increased and accumulated at the end of the operation cycle and would be harmful to fish culture.

Abstract:In this study, photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) were first harvested by MBR with pendulum type oscillation (PTO) hollow fiber module in succession and on a large scale. Based on unique properties of PSB, PSB/MBR was successfully applied for high-salinity wastewater treatment. Compared with control PSB-MBR (CMBR), PSB/PTO-MBR exhibited more excellent organics removal, which was mainly attributed to much higher biomass production for utilization. Meanwhile, the influence of light irradiation and aeration on activity of PSB was investigated in detail. Results showed that PTO-MBR with 12h light irradiation proved to be a promising and economical alternative. The cycle of dark/light and anoxic had a positive effect on PSB cultivating. Moreover, PTO-MBR exhibited much higher flux than CMBR even if large amounts of biomass existed, which demonstrated that the strong shear stress on interface of liquid-membrane played important roles on membrane fouling reduction.

Abstract:Produced water (PW) is considered the largest wastewater stream, and its volume is a major concern for the oil industry. PW has a complex composition consisting of several chemical components, the most important of which is the oil and grease content, making it difficult to biologically treat and dispose of this wastewater for reuse or discharge into water bodies. The present paper aimed to study the treatment of PW through the sequential and continuous processes of coalescence (using vegetal fibers from coconut (FC) and loofah) and fixed-bed adsorption (using biochar from ouricury palm (OP)). For the study, a steady-state horizontal bed coalescer was constructed to study operating parameters (flow rate: 40–80 L/h; time: 10–30 min), and a fixed-bed column using biochar and activated charcoal produced by vacuum pyrolysis, evaluating variables (particle diameter: 0.15–0.5 mm; flow rate: 2.2–4.4 L/h; adsorbent: OP without modifications and activated with NaOH). The innovation of this research is by the sequential treatment of PW using coalescence and fixed-bed adsorption associated to the application of these biomasses (FC, loofah and OP). The results showed that the bed coalescer operated under stable conditions achieved an average oil and grease removal efficiency of 83 ± 7.6 % (at 60 min) and FC demonstrated better performance than loofah. On the other hand, the fixed-bed column presented a maximum efficiency of 84 % using biochar or activated charcoal being the particle diameter and the interaction between flow rate and type of biochar with significative effects on the performance. The results indicated that the treated effluent met regulatory requirements for discharge to water, making it suitable for reinjection or reuse systems.

Abstract:The management of produced water (PW) generated during oil and gas operations requires effective treatment and comprehensive chemical and toxicological assessment to reduce the environmental risks associated with reuse or discharge. This study evaluated a treatment train that included a low-temperature thermal distillation pilot system followed by granular activated carbon (GAC) and zeolite post-treatment for processing hypersaline Permian Basin PW. Our study provides a unique and comprehensive assessment of the treatment efficiency considering a targeted chemical scheme together with whole effluent toxicity (WET) tests across four trophic levels regarding aquatic critical receptors of concern (ROC): Raphidocelis subcapitata, Vibrio fischeri, Ceriodaphnia dubia, and Danio rerio. The distillate from the thermal distillation process met various numeric discharge standards for salinity and major ions. However, it did not meet toxicity requirements established by the United States National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System program. Subsequent post-treatment using GAC and zeolite reduced the concentration of potential stressors, including volatile organics, NH3, Cd, Cr, Zn, and Mn in the final effluent to below detection limits. This resulted in a consistent toxicity reduction across all WET tests, with no observable adverse effects for R. subcapitata, C. dubia, and D. rerio (no observed effect concentration >100%), and V. fischeri effects reduced to 19%. This study realizes the feasibility of treating PW to non-toxic levels and meeting reuse and discharge requirements. It underscores the importance of implementing integrated treatment trains to remove the contaminants of concern and provides a systematic decision framework to predict and monitor environmental risks associated with PW reuse.
Oil field wastewater treatment in Biological Aerated Filter by immobilized microorganisms

Abstract:As an alternative to the conventional activated sludge (CAS) process, this paper investigates the use of B350M and B350 group microorganisms immobilized on carriers in a pair of Biological Aerated Filter (BAF) reactors to pre-treat oil field wastewater before desalination. By operating the biodegradation system for 142 days with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 4h and volumetric load 1.07kg COD (m3d)−1 at last, the reactor immobilized with B350M achieved mean degradation efficiencies of 78% for total organic carbon (TOC) and 94% for oil, whereas that with B350 only reached 64% for TOC and 86% for oil. The influent wastewater contains organic substances from C13H28 to C32H66, and a total of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The degradation efficiencies of PAHs in the BAF immobilized with B350M and B350 microorganisms are 90% and 84%, respectively. It is observed that the biological diversity of microorganisms in the reactor containing B350M (seven more strains of bacteria survive) is richer than in that containing B350. A large quantity of filamentous microorganisms developed in both reactors without causing foaming or bulking.

Abstract:Integrated wastewater treatment processes are accepted as the best option for sustainable and unrestricted onsite water reuse. In this study, moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR), membrane bioreactor (MBR), and direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) treatment steps were integrated successively to obtain the combined advantages of these processes for industrial wastewater treatment. The MBBR step acts as the first step in the biological treatment and also mitigates foulant load on the MBR. Similarly, MBR acts as the second step in the biological treatment and serves as a pretreatment prior to the DCMD step. The latter acts as a final treatment to produce high-quality water. A laboratory scale integrated MBBR/MBR/DCMD experimental system was used for assessing the treatment efficiency of primary treated (PTIWW) and secondary treated (STIWW) industrial wastewater in terms of permeate water flux, effluent quality, and membrane fouling. The removal efficiency of total dissolved solids (TDS) and effluent permeate flux of the three-step process (MBBR/MBR/DCMD) were better than the two-step (MBR/DCMD) process. In the three-step process, the average removal efficiency of TDS was 99.85% and 98.16% when treating STIWW and PTIWW, respectively. While in the case of the two-step process, the average removal efficiency of TDS was 93.83% when treating STIWW. Similar trends were observed for effluent permeate flux values which were found, in the case of the three-step process, 62.6% higher than the two-step process, when treating STIWW in both cases. Moreover, the comparison of the quality of the effluents obtained with the analysed configurations with that obtained by Jeddah Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant proved the higher performance of the proposed membrane processes.

Abstract:A laboratory membrane bioreactor (MBR) using a submerged polyethylene hollow-fibre membrane module with a pore size of 0.4μm and a total surface area of 0.2m2 was used for treating a raw water supply slightly polluted by domestic sewage. The feeding influent had a total organic carbon (TOC) level of 3–5mg/L and an ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) concentration of 3–4mg/L. The MBR ran continuously for more than 500 days, with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) as short as 1h or less. Sufficient organic degradation and complete nitrification were achieved in the MBR effluent, which normally had a TOC of less than 2mg/L and a NH3-N of lower than 0.2mg/L. The process was also highly effective for eliminating conventional water impurities, as demonstrated by decreases in turbidity from 4.50±1.11 to 0.08±0.03 NTU, in total coliforms from 105/mL to less than 5/mL and in UV254 absorbance from 0.098±0.019 to 0.036±0.007cm−1. With the MBR treatment, the 3-day trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) was significantly reduced from 239.5±43.8 to 60.4±23.1μg/L. The initial chlorine demand for disinfection decreased from 22.3±5.1 to 0.5±0.1mg/L. The biostability of the effluent improved considerably as the assimilable organic carbon (AOC) decreased from 134.5±52.7 to 25.3±19.9μg/L. All of these water quality parameters show the superior quality of the MBR-treated water, which was comparable to or even better than the local tap water. Molecular size distribution analysis and the hydrophobic characterisation of the MBR effluent, in comparison to the filtered liquor from the bioreactor, suggest that the MBR had an enhanced filtration mechanism. A sludge layer on the membrane surface could have functioned as an additional barrier to the passage of typical THM precursors, such as large organic molecules and hydrophobic compounds. These results indicate that the MBR with a short HRT could be developed as an effective biological water treatment process to address the urgent need of many developing countries that are plagued by the serious contamination of surface water resources.

Abstract:High-saline wastewater treatment processes have a high energy demand, while microalgae-driven wastewater biotechnology is both economical and environmentally friendly, and the use of microalgae to treat high-saline wastewater can effectively reduce energy consumption. However, it is unclear whether the performance of microalgae reactor can be stable for a long time. In this study, an open continuous-flow biofilm photobioreactor using Dunaliella salina was innovatively constructed, and operated in combination with a membrane bioreactor (MBR) for high-saline wastewater treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term performance of MBR, MBPBR alone and their combined operation for the removal of organic matter, phosphorus and nitrogen, explore the pathway and mechanism of nitrogen and phosphorus removal by MBPBR, and evaluate the feasibility of MBPBR-MBR integrated system for the treatment of saline wastewater. The MBR effectively removed most of the organic matter and converted ammonia nitrogen into nitrate nitrogen, which is a preferred nitrogen source for the growth of Dunaliella salina , thereby providing favorable water quality for Dunaliella salina in the subsequent MBPBR. The MBPBR, with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 72 h, achieved a NO 3 - -N removal load of 74.9 g N/(m 3 ∙d) and a removal efficiency of approximately 60 %, and the PO 4 3- -P removal load of 8.33 g P/(m 3 ∙d) and removal efficiency of over 80 %. The MBR-MBPBR system demonstrated long-term stability, achieving removal efficiencies of 84.3 %, 81.6 %, and 91.0 % for COD, TN and PO 4 3- -P, respectively. Within the MBPBR, the growth of algae and their assimilation contributed 44.9 % and 38.7 % of the nitrogen and phosphorus removal, respectively. The abundance of Dunaliella salina in the MBPBR remained at approximately 90 % for over 40 days of operation, providing an opportunity for Dunaliella salina recovery. These findings provide valuable insights into the utilization of microalgae for the treatment of high-salinity wastewater, while also supporting the practical implementation of microalgae-based treatment methods for such wastewater.

Abstract:Low-pressure membrane technology (ultrafiltration and microfiltration) has been applied to two key effluents generated by the petroleum industry: produced water (PW) from oil exploration, a significant proportion being generated offshore, and onshore refinery/petrochemical effluent. PW is treated physicochemically to remove the oil prior to discharge, whereas the onshore effluents are often treated biologically to remove both the suspended and dissolved organic fractions. This review examines the efficacy and extent of implementation of membrane technology for these two distinct applications, focusing on data and information pertaining to the treatment of real effluents at large/full scale. Reported data trends from PW membrane filtration reveal that, notwithstanding extensive testing of ceramic membrane material for this duty, the mean fluxes sustained are highly variable and generally insufficiently high for offshore treatment on oil platforms where space is limited. This appears to be associated with the use of polymer for chemically-enhanced enhanced oil recovery, which causes significant membrane fouling impairing membrane permeability. Against this, the application of MBRs to onshore oil effluent treatment is well established, with a relatively narrow range of flux values reported (9–17 L·m−2·h−1) and >80% COD removal. It is concluded that the prospects of MBRs for petroleum industry effluent treatment are more favorable than implementation of membrane filtration for offshore PW treatment.

Abstract:Offshore oil and gas production is increasingly growing popular globally. Produced water (PW), which is the largest byproduct of oil and gas production, is a complex mixture of dissolved and undissolved organic and inorganic substances. PW contributes considerably to oil pollution in the offshore petroleum and gas industry owing to the organic substances, which mainly include hydrocarbons; this is a major concern to researchers because of the long-term adverse effects on the ecosystem. Since the development of offshore petroleum and gas industry, the PW treatment process has been classified into pretreatment, standard-reaching treatment, and advanced purification treatment based on the characteristics of PW and has been coupled with the environmental, economic, and regulatory considerations. The mechanism, design principle, application, and development of conventional technologies for PW treatment, such as gravity and enhanced gravity sedimentation, hydrocyclone, gas flotation, and medium filtration, are summarized in this study. Novel methods for further application, such as tubular separation, combined fibers coalescence, and membrane separation, are also discussed. Enhancement of treatment with multiple physical fields and environmentally friendly chemical agents, coupled with information control technology, would be the preferred PW treatment approach in the future. Moreover, the PW treatment system should be green, efficient, secure, and intelligent to satisfy the large-scale, unmanned, and abyssal exploration of offshore oil and gas production in the future.

Abstract:Anaerobic and membrane technologies are a promising combination to decrease the energy consumption associated with wastewater treatment, allowing the recovery of resources: organic matter as biomethane, nutrient assimilation by microalgae and reclaimed water. In this study, domestic wastewater was treated using a combination of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket sludge reactor (UASB) and a membrane photobioreactor (MPBR). The outdoor facilities were operated continuously for three months under unfavourable environmental conditions such as lack of temperature control, winter season with lower solar irradiation and lower daylight hours which was a challenge for the present work, not previously described. The energetic valorisation of the organic matter present in the wastewater by biomethane produced in the UASB would contribute to reducing overall facilities' energy requirements. The ultrafiltration (UF) membrane facilitated the harvesting of biomass, operating at 10 L·h-1·m-2 during the experimental period. Although the main contribution to fouling was irreversible, chemical cleanings were not necessary due to effective fouling control, which prevented the final TMP from exceeding 25 kPa. In addition, microalgae-bacterial consortium developed without prior inoculation were harvested from the MPBR using membrane assistance. The obtained biomass was also successfully tested as a biostimulant for corn germination/growth, as well as a biopesticide against Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium oxysporum.
