Abstract:A variety of oil sorbents with good hydrophobicity and oil-absorption capacity have been reported. However, their practical application is severely hindered by complex preparation process, high application cost and non-biodegradability. Here, Calotropis gigantea fiber (CGF) from plant fibers and poly lactic acid (PLA) from renewable resources were utilized to construct a biodegradable foam-like oil sorbent (marked as PCF), by using a tandem freezing-solvent replacement method. CGF has large hollow structure for oil absorption, PLA can provide the oil sorbent with physical rigidity, and additional freezing process is expected to produce the oil sorbent with higher porosity for accommodating more oils. SEM images indicated the stable porous structure of PCF, and stress-strain results gave the support for good mechanical property, as the data showing that PCF remained intact structure at 70% deformation (pressure up to 185 kPa). PCF had the oil-absorption capacity ranging from 22.8 to 48.3 g/g, and could selectively absorb the oils in water for its water contact angle >130 degrees. With added power, PCF also had the ability to transfer the oils from water. After ten "absorption-desorption" cycles, the absorption percentage of PCF reached still 81.3% for soybean oil and up to 88.1% for kerosene, indicating its excellent reusability. Compared with commercial oil sorbent, the treatment cost using PCF could be reduced by more than 80% from a preliminary evaluation, demonstrating that the as-developed PCF showed great commercial viability for treating oily wastewaters to provide a cleaner water environment for humans. Abstract:A facile and novel method to fabricate superoleophilic and hydrophobic flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF) is presented in this work. The modified FPUF was prepared by utilizing positively charged chitosan and negatively charged titanate nanotubes together with subsequent modification of dodecyl mercaptan. The roughness of the foam surface improved significantly by increasing the bilayers number of the coating. The modified FPUF could rapidly and selectively absorb various kinds of oils up to 29 times of its weight, and the absorbed oils could be collected by a simple squeezing process. Furthermore, after 50 absorption cycles, the modified FPUF could still maintain its high absorption capacity.

Supercritical CO2 extrusion foaming of highly open-cell poly(lactic acid) foam with superior oil adsorption performance

Abstract:Addressing marine oil spills and industrial water pollution necessitates the development of eco-efficient oil-absorbing materials. With increasing concern for the environment, there is a consensus to decrease the use of petroleum-based polymers. Herein, lightweight poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blend foams with varying thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) content were fabricated via a solvent-free, eco-friendly supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) extrusion foaming technology. The incorporation of TPU significantly enhanced the crystallization rate of PLA, with the semi-crystallization time of PT30 and PT50 blends at 105 °C exhibiting a reduction of 77.2 % and 47.9 %, respectively, compared to neat PLA. The resulting foams exhibited an open-cell structure with excellent selective oil adsorption capabilities. Notably, the PT30 foam achieved a remarkable maximum expansion ratio of 36.0, while the PT50 foam attained the highest open-cell content of 96.2 %. The PT50 foam demonstrated an outstanding adsorption capacity, spanning from 4.7 to 18.8 g/g for diverse oils and solvents, with rapid adsorption kinetics, reaching 94.9 % of the equilibrium adsorption capacity for CCl4 within just 1 min. Furthermore, the PT50 foam retained 95.2 % of its adsorption capacity for CCl4 over 10 adsorption-desorption cycles. This study presents a scalable and sustainable approach for large-scale production of high-performance, bio-based foams, facilitating efficient oil-water separation.
Superhydrophobic foam combined with biomass-derived TENG based on upcycled coconut husk for efficient oil–water separation

Abstract:The ocean ecological environments are seriously affected by oil spilling and plastic-debris, preventing and significantly reducing marine pollution via using biocomposite production from natural fiber reinforcement is a more friendly way to deal with marine oil pollution. Herein, we upcycled coir-coconut into lignin and coconut shell into spherical TENG by a combination of dip-dry and chemical treatment and used the SiO 2 nanoparticles together with cellulose nanofibrils to prepare serial sugar-templated, anisotropic and hybrid foams. The as-prepared lignin/SiO 2 porous sponge (LSPS) with a hierarchical porous morphology and uniformly dispersed nanoparticles structure benefits from the advantages of biomass-based additives, which presents reversible large-strain deformation (50%) and high compressive strength (11.42 kpa). Notably, the LSPS was significantly more hydrophobic (WCA ≈150°) than pure silicone-based foams, and its selective absorbability can separate oil from water under continuous pumping. Meanwhile, the coconut husk was also upcycled as a spherical TENG shell by a combination of the nanofiber-enhanced polymer spherical oscillator (CESO), which possessed high triboelectric properties ( U oc = 272 V, I sc = 14.5 μA, Q = 70 nC) and was comparable to the plastic shell TENG at low frequency (1.6 Hz). The monolithic foam structure developed using this clean synthetic strategy holds considerable promise for new applications in sustainable petroleum contamination remediation.

Highly Durable Superhydrophobic Polymer Foams Fabricated by Extrusion and Supercritical CO2 Foaming for Selective Oil Absorption

Abstract:The severe water contamination caused by oil leakage is calling for low-cost and high-performance absorbent materials for selective oil removal. In this study, a scalable green method was proposed to produce polypropylene (PP)/poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) composite foams via conventional processing techniques including twin-screw extrusion and supercritical carbon dioxide foaming. To produce the superhydrophobic foam, micro- and nanosized PTFE particles were melt blended with PP and subsequently foamed. Ascribed to the nanofibrillation of microsized PTFE during processing, the fabricated foam exhibited a special highly porous structure with PTFE nanofibrils and nanoparticles uniformly distributed on the pore surfaces within the PP matrix, which resulted in a remarkably high water contact angle of 156.8° and a low contact angle hysteresis of 1.9°. Unlike traditional surface-modified superhydrophobic absorbers, the foams prepared are entirely superhydrophobic, which means that they remain superhydrophobic when being fractured or cut. Moreover, they are highly durable and maintained the superhydrophobicity when subjected to ultrasonication and mechanical sanding. When used in selective oil absorption, the durable foams exhibited excellent absorption efficiency and high stability in repetitive and long-term use. These advantages make the PP/PTFE foam a promising superabsorbent material for water remediation.

Abstract:One of the most pervasive environmental issues is the frequent oil spills that happen during oil production and transportation processes. This global challenge calls for emerging materials that can effectively separate oil pollutants from water. Here, a facile and feasible method to fabricate a high-performance oil absorbent (ODA-rGO@MF) through the coating of octadecylamine-grafted reduced graphene oxide (ODA-rGO) on the skeleton of commercial melamine foam (MF) is reported. The resultant foam not only possesses the hierarchical pore structure, superior compressibility, and mechanical stability of the original foam but also exhibits high water repellency, superhydrophobicity, and durability under harsh conditions, such as in strongly acidic (alkaline) and salty solutions. The superhydrophobicity of ODA-rGO@MF was created by employing the microarchitecture of MF, forming the rough rGO nanoscale wrinkles on the foam skeletons and further reducing the surface energy by octadecylamine (ODA). These fascinating characteristics make the functionalized foam an excellent oil absorbent with a high absorption capacity (44-111 times its own weight) and extraordinary recyclability. More importantly, the inexpensive materials and low-cost fabrication technique make it possible for large-scale production. Thus, the as-prepared foam has the potential to be used as a promising absorbent for oil-spill cleanups.

Abstract:Coconut oil (CO) has become one of the most important renewable raw materials for polyol synthesis due to its abundance and low price. However, the saturated chemical structure of CO limits its capability for functionalization. In this study, a novel reaction mechanism via the sequential glycerolysis and amidation of CO triglycerides produced an amine-based polyol (p-CDEA). The synthesized biopolyol has a relatively higher hydroxyl value of 361 mg KOH per g relative to previously reported CO-based polyols with values ranging from 270–333 mg KOH per g. This primary hydroxyl-rich p-CDEA was used directly as a sole B-side polyol component in a polyurethane-forming reaction, without further purification. Results showed that a high-performance poly(urethane-urea) (PUA) hybrid foam was successfully produced. It has a compressive strength of 226 kPa and thermal conductivity of 23.2 mW (m −1 K −1 ), classified as type 1 for a rigid structural sandwich panel core and type 2 for rigid thermal insulation foam applications according to ASTM standards. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was performed to characterize the chemical features of the polyols and foams. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was also performed to evaluate the morphological structures of the synthesized foams. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were conducted to investigate the foam's thermal characteristics. Thus far, this work is the first to report a novel and effective reaction mechanism for the synthesis of a highly functional CO-derived polyol and the first CO-based polyol with no petroleum-based replacement that may serve as raw material for rigid PUA foam production. PUA hybrid foams are potential insulation and structural materials. This study further provided a compelling case for enhanced sustainability of p-CDEA PUA hybrid foam against petroleum-based polyurethane.

Abstract:Superwettability can affect the performance of oil separation from water during the treatment of oily wastewater. Among various types of materials developed for cleaning oil pollution, foam is a popular choice due to its attractive lightweight properties and adjustable porosities. Foams with superwetting surfaces (superhydrophilic/superoleophobic underwater) are ideal for oil/water separations. In this study, lignin-based polyurethane foams (LPUFs) were synthesized first, and then polydopamine particles were deposited on the surface of the foam by in situ polymerization under weak alkaline conditions to increase its surface roughness. Afterwards, phytic acid was used to modify the foam to achieve surface superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity. Successful loading of polydopamine (PDA) particles and coating of phytic acid (PA) onto the foam was demonstrated by SEM, EDS, FTIR, XPS, and thermogravimetric analysis measurements. It was shown in the cyclic compression tests that LPUFs had good mechanical properties. Under 75 % compression strain, the maximum stress in the first cycle of LPUF/PDA/PA was 105.92 kPa. After 30 cyclic compression tests, the maximum stress of LPUF/PDA/PA under 75 % compression strain was 105.63 kPa, demonstrating a high mechanical stability. The contact angle of the foam modified by PDA and PA was 0° for water, 166.7° for chloroform, and 158.4° for hexane, which also demonstrated excellent underwater anti-oil adhesion performances. Oil-water separation tests by using PDA and PA modified lignin-based foam with mixtures of water and n -hexane, cyclohexane, toluene, and pump oil indicated a separation efficiency of over 99 % for the types of mixtures tested together with excellent repeatability. In addition, the PDA and PA modified lignin-based foams were able to adsorb 67.1 mg/g of methylene blue, 96.1 mg/g of rhodamine B, and 98.2 mg/g of copper sulfate. The lignin-based foam could completely degrade under weak alkaline conditions after usage. This study highlighted a novel strategy for synthesizing environmentally friendly high-performance adsorbents to efficiently treat polluted wastewater using lignin as a raw material.

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrate a new all bio-based adsorbent material by treating Enteromorpho prolifera (EP) fibers with tannic acid-ferric chloride complex and then grafting hydrophobic group octadecylamine. All raw materials are easily available, low-cost, and safe. The modified EP fibers have approximately 63.4 g g−1 of oil absorption and 1.4 g g−1 of water absorption, which is an 62.8% increase in oil absorption and an 82% increase in hydrophobicity over that of untreated EP fibers, respectively, exhibiting high hydrophobicity and oleophilicity. The affinity discrimination to water and oil enables hydrophobic algae candidate materials to separate oils and water efficiently, both in an oil–water mixture and a water-in-oil emulsion. In summary, the as-synthesized modified EP demonstrates a broad application prospect in the treatment of oil spill accidents and oily wastewater.

Abstract:A superhydrophobic/superoleophilic modified polyurethane sponge was prepared to remove oil slicks on the water surface. The prepared sponge material has good selectivity for the recovery of oil and organic pollutants. In addition, we connect the modified sponge with a self‐priming pump, which can recover oil with a viscosity in the range of 0–172 CP in situ and efficiently, while avoiding damage to the adsorption material due to extrusion and distillation operations in traditional oil recovery methods. This technology has broad application prospects in the face of large‐scale oil spills and other emergency events. We have prepared a super‐hydrophobic/super‐oleophilic modified sponge material (C‐PDMS‐PU) by attaching carbon powder and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to a sponge skeleton by a simple dip‐coating method using a low‐cost polyurethane sponge as the raw material. The material has a C‐PDMS composite hydrophobic coating, which can efficiently and selectively absorb oil slicks on the water surface or organic solvents underwater that are 21–26 times its weight. Relying on this adsorbent, we have built an oil collection device that can in‐situ absorb/desorb oil with a dynamic viscosity ranging from 0 CP to 172 CP on the water surface or underwater. This oil collection device is small, simple to operate, and portable, thus freeing the adsorbent from the limits of adsorption capacity while continuously and efficiently recovering the oil from the sea surface, hence achieving the integration of adsorption and separation. This new adsorbent and the oil collection device have promising applications in emergencies, such as organic solvent spills, tanker spills, and oil spills from offshore rigs.

Abstract:Confronted with severe water contamination induced by the spillage of oils, seeking oil-selective adsorbent to recover oil from oily wastewater is extremely urgent. In particular, the functionalized polymer foams with open-cell structures are highly promising oil-selective adsorbent. Herein, a simple, effective and green method was presented to prepare open-cell poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) foams with selective oil-adsorption behaviors via melt blending and supercritical CO2 batch foaming technique. The introduction of PTFE had a distinct positive influence on the melt viscoelasticity and crystallization performances of various PLA specimens. The resulted PLA/PTFE4 foam with a volume expansion ratio of 10.17 ± 0.93 and a cell density of 1.58 × 108 cells/cm3 possessed the highest open-cell content of 90.81 ± 0.78 %. Meanwhile, PLA/PTFE4 foam revealed oil/water selective adsorption capacity of 1.2-6.1 g/g for various organic solvents and oils. The adsorption capacity of PLA/PTFE4 foam for CCl4 exhibited no significant decrement during ten adsorption-desorption cycles. This research offered a guideline for the manufacture of green environmental open-cell polymer foams for oil-selective adsorption.

Abstract:Inspired by the structure of mosquito's compound eyes, a hydrophobic flexible polyurethane (PU) foam composite (named as PU@SiO2/ADP) with good flame-retardant property was fabricated by coating aluminum diethylhypophosphite (ADP) and in situ-formed SiO2 nanoparticles. Owning to considerable surface roughness of stacked SiO2 nanoparticles and intrinsic hydrophobicity of ADP, the water contact angle (WCA) of modified PU foam increased from 113 degrees to 133 degrees. The absorption capacity of modified foam to oils and organic solvents was also evaluated. The results showed that the absorption ratios of the modified PU to dichloromethane reached 69 g/g. The oil-water separation results proved that PU@SiO2/ ADP foam could rapidly and selectively absorb oils or organic solvents from the water surface even under turbulent flow conditions. Fabricated hydrophobic PU maintained excellent oil absorption properties after 10 absorption-squeezing cycles, demonstrating good recyclability. The modified PU foam also showed high flame retardancy. The surface treatment method applied in this research not only provides an effective strategy for fabricating a promising absorbent PU foam for oil spill treatment, but also brings a promising prospect for enhancing the flame-retardant performance of these absorbent polymer composites. Thermally stable and superhydrophobic foam prepared by high‐internal phase emulsion for oil/water separation with good recycling capacity

Abstract:Superhydrophobic polymeric foams, with good thermal stability and high-recycling capacity to remove oil from oily wastewater, are highly desirable for current oily wastewater purification. Herein, poly (styrene-acrylic acid 2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluoro-butyl ester-divinylbenzene) foam with porosity as high as 99.27% has been prepared through high-internal phase emulsions. Therein, poly (cyclotriphosphazene-co-4,4′-sulfonyldiphenol) microspheres, and Span80 act as co-emulsifier to stabilize the emulsion system. The as-prepared foams exhibited super hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 150.3° and thermal stability. Additionally, the oil adsorption capacity of the porous material could reach up to 25.6–53.4 times its mass with accessible and high-recycling capacity. These aforementioned outstanding properties make our superhydrophobic foam hold potential applications in oil/water separation.

Abstract:Selective oil-adsorbing materials are crucial for the treatment of oil spills and oily wastewater. However, most existing oil-adsorbing materials are traditional petroleum-based polymers that consume non-renewable resources and generate hardly-degradable plastic waste. Moreover, toxic organic solvents are usually used in their preparation process, which also causes environmental pollution. Herein, fully biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(butylenes succinate) (PBS) foams with outstanding selective oil-adsorption performance were successfully prepared using the supercritical CO2 foaming technology, a solvent-free process. With PLA as the matrix and PBS as the cell-opener, the resulted PLA/PBS foam shows a highly interconnected lace-like open-cell structure and an open-cell content of 98.2%. Meanwhile, the PLA/PBS open-cell foam possesses an expansion ratio of 43.6 and a porosity of 97.7%, which are about 315% higher than previous research. The PLA/PBS foam can selectively adsorb oil from water to achieve efficient oil–water separation and water purification. The PLA/PBS foam presents an adsorption capacity of 7.9–21.9 g/g for various organic solvents and oils. What's more, the adsorption capacity for CCl4 shows no obvious attenuation during 20 adsorption–desorption cycles. These benefit from its unique open-cell structure and high porosity. This work provides a new method for the green preparation of eco-friendly high-performance oil-adsorbing materials.

Abstract:Oil spillages and industrial effluents have caused serious damage to the global environment. However, there are key challenges that remain in terms of expensive production costs, complex production methods, and environmental unfriendliness. In the present work, we developed a facile and efficient method to fabricate resilient hydrophobic cellulose-based foam via glyoxal cross-linking strategy and chemical vapor deposition to form MTMs coatings. The resulting foam exhibits excellent resilience (99%), ultra-low density (16.5 mg/cm 3 ), high porosity (98.9%), high hydrophobicity (145.9°), good oil absorption (30 g/g-46.6 g/g). The above-mentioned advantages make cellulose-based foams promising materials for cleaning oil spills and oil–water separation.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic polyurethane foam is one of the most promising materials for oil-water separation. However, there are only limited studies prepared matrix superhydrophobic foams as adsorbents. In this paper, SiO2 modified by 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorododecyl trichlorosilane (F-SiO2) was added into the lignin-based foam matrix by a one-step foaming technique. The average diameter of F-SiO2 was about 480 nm with an water contact angle (WCA) of 160.3°. The lignin-based polyurethane foam with F-SiO2 had a superhydrophobic water contact angle of 151.3°. There is no obvious change in contact angle after 100 cycles of compression or after cutting and abrasion. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that F-SiO2 was distributed both on the surface and inside of the foam. The efficiency for oil-water separation reached 99 %. Under the light intensity of 1 kW/m2, the surface temperature of the lignin-based foam rose to 77.6 °C. In addition, the foam exhibited self-cleaning properties and degraded within 2 h in an alcoholic alkali solution. Thus, in this study, we developed a novel matrix superhydrophobic lignin-based polyurethane foam with an excellent promise to be used as oil water separation adsorbents in industrial wastewater treatment and oil spill clean-up processes.

Abstract:Oil pollution is a serious environmental and natural resource problem. Traditional adsorption materials for oil-water separation have limitations in terms of their preparation cost, reusability, and mechanical properties. Among the conventional adsorption materials, super-hydrophobic/super-lipophilic materials are easily contaminated by oil. In this study, polypropylene (PP) is used as a foam substrate to prepare an open-cell PP foam via hot pressing, supercritical CO 2 foaming, and electron beam (EB) irradiation. The impact of EB irradiation dose on the open-cell content of PP foam can lead to cell wall rupture, resulting in an open-cell structure that enhances oil-water separation performance. At an absorbed radiation dose of 200 kGy, the PP foams exhibit optimal oil–water separation performance, cyclic compression stability, heat insulation, and preparation cost. The open-cell content of PP foam is increased to 86.5%, the adsorption capacity for diesel oil is 42.8 g/g, and the adsorption efficiency remains at 99.6% after 100 cycles of oil desorption in a complex pH environment. Meanwhile, cracks and nano-voids simultaneously promote the capillary action of oil, and the oil transport rate is 0.0713 g/(g·s). This study provides a new concept for the preparation of open-cell polymer foams that can meet the demand for high oil-absorption capacity under complex acid-base pH conditions.

Abstract:The environmentally friendly and efficient remediation of crude oil spills is a global challenge due to its high viscosity and low fluidity at room temperature. Herein, we reported a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modified biomass carbon fibers foam immobilized with Ag 2 nanoparticles via the self-assembly, freeze-drying, carbonization , and hydrophobic modification processes (denoted as PAAC). The resulting PAAC foam exhibited excellent hydrophobicity (water contact angle: 147.8 ◦ ), high solar absorption capacity and excellent photothermal conversion property, which enable it to decrease the viscosity of heavy oil and achieve high adsorption capacity of heavy crude oil (60.5 g/g) and great reusable performances under 0.3 sun energy drive. In addition, the PAAC foam showed excellent adsorption capacity to organic solvents and low viscosity oils (11.3–26.4 g/g). Under visible-light irradiation, PAAC foam exhibited remarkable photocatalytic efficiency for removing crystal violet and demonstrated high stability and photocatalytic activity after five consecutive cycles. The proposed design of a solar heated sorbent presents a new potential to explore multifunctional biomass materials to solve environmental pollution problems on a large scale.

Abstract:Hydrophobic sponges have attracted significant interest in oil spills and water-oil separation as potential absorption materials due to their desirable absorptivity, selectivity, and elasticity. In this paper, a hydrophilic melamine sponge (MS) is transferred into a superhydrophobic sponge via polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modification followed by in situ growth of fluorine-functionalized covalent organic framework (denoted as TFA-COF) nanoparticles. Therefore, the PDMS@TFA-COF@MS sponge was successfully prepared for efficient oil-water separation. The resultant PDMS@TFA-COF@MS exhibits superhydrophobic properties with a water contact angle of 156.7°. The superhydrophobic sponge has selectivity adsorption for different organic solvents and oils from water as well as oil-water separation efficiency (96% after 30 cycles) and oil absorption capacity (12 646% after 30 cycles). Meanwhile, the PDMS@TFA-COF@MS sponge exhibits strong thermal stability and flame retardancy in addition to having exceptional resistance to chemical corrosion in acidic, alkaline, and salt solutions. Moreover, the surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsion could be efficiently separated by the sponge. Therefore, the prepared superhydrophobic PDMS@TFA-COF@MS sponge demonstrates possible uses for long-life oil-water separation applications.
