A key and a morphological summary table to all these Leucophenga species are provided. Phylogenetic relationships among these 21 Leucophenga species, another 14 congeneric, known species from seven groups, and two representative outgroup taxa are reconstructed using 169 DNA sequences of the partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) gene. In sum, 13 of the 21 Leucophenga species, which possess the only diagnostic character of the proxima species group (abdominal third tergite shortened, anteriorly discolored in males), are not monophyletic. Therefore, all the Leucophenga species described or redescribed in this study are temporarily classified as unplaced species (except for L. sorii, which has been assigned to the sorii species group) to avoid further confusion.

Bacteria isolated from the different developmental stages and larval organs of the obligate parasitic fly, Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae)

Abstract:Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is the major myiasis-causing fly species in the whole of Eurasia for most important domestic animals. The aim of the present work was to obtain data on the culturable bacteria isolated under aerobic conditions from this fly: bacteria were isolated from all developmental stages (larvae, pupa, and imago) of Wohlfahrtia magnifica, and the third-stage larval organs were also sampled. To determine the possible antagonistic effects between the dominant bacterial groups, an antibiosis assay was carried out. Plating and isolation of bacteria was performed by classical microbiological methods. Characterization of the isolated strains was carried out via a polyphasic approach; classical phenotypic tests, chemotaxonomical examinations, and 16S rDNA sequence analyses were also applied. In the case of maggot macerate samples, members of the family Enterobacteriaceae were characteristic. Members of a new genus (Schineria) belonging to the gamma subdivision of proteobacteria were also isolated. According to our data, the shifts in the Schineria and Proteus populations within the larvae are strongly influenced by their interactions with each other and among the members of the family Enterobacteriaceae. The pupa and imago samples contained several other Gram-negative bacteria (Stenotrophomonas, Brevundimonas, etc.). Among Gram-positive bacteria, in all maggot macerate samples, members of the genus Bacillus and the Arthrobacter-Micrococcus group of actinobacteria were dominant (neither of them was a producer or sensitive to the compounds of other microorganisms), and bacteria related to the genus Corynebacterium were also found. From the larvae Aureobacterium liquefaciens and Enterococcus faecalis were isolated, and from the pupae Dietzia maris and Enterococcus faecalis. In the samples of third-stage larval organs, the dominant groups were the same as in the third-stage larval macerate sample; however, several additional genera/species were observed (Rhodococcus fascians, Streptomyces sp., Rathayibacter sp., Bacillus thuringiensis/cereus).
Survey of entomopathogenic fungi naturally infecting cereal aphids (Homoptera: Aphididae) of irrigated grain crops in southwestern Idaho.

Abstract:A four-year field survey of wheat, barley, and corn generated data on 10 species of fungal pathogens, including eight Entomophthorales and two Hyphomycetes recovered from 2,930 cadavers of aphids infesting grains grown under irrigation in southwestern Idaho. Seven species of cereal aphids, including the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko); the potato aphid, Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas); Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker); the corn leaf aphid, Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch); the bird-cherry oat aphid, R. padi (L.); the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani); and the English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (F.), were recorded as hostsof one or more species of entomopathogenic fungi. The fungi were identified as Pandora neoaphidis (Remaudière & Hennebert) Humber, Conidiobolus obscurus (Hall & Dunn) Remaudière & Keller, C. coronatus (Costantin), C. thromboides Drechsler, Entomophthora chromaphidis Burger & Swain, Neozygites fresenii (Nowakowski) Remaudière & Keller, Zoophthora radicans (Brefeld) Batko, Z. occidentalis (Thaxter) Batko, Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin, and Verticillium lecanii (Zimmermann) Viégas. P. neoaphidis was the most prevalent species annually in populations of M. dirhodum and D. noxia and also frequently infected other hosts. Conidiobolus spp. were secondary to P. neoaphidis in occurrence, commonly infecting several aphid species. E. chromaphidis, N. fresenii, Z. radicans, and Z. occidentalis were recovered only occasionally and on fewer aphid species. Two Hyphomycetes, B. bassiana and V. lecanii, infected aphids in the field at very low levels compared with the Entomophthorales. All species, except N. fresenii and Z. occidentalis, were isolated from their aphid hosts with agar media (SDAY or SEMA, or both) or liquid insect tissue culture medium.

Abstract:The phylogenetic tree of the Staphylococcus aureus complex consists of several distinct clades and the majority of human and veterinary S. aureus isolates form one large clade. In addition, two divergent clades have recently been described as separate species. One was named Staphylococcus argenteus, due to the lack of the "golden" pigment staphyloxanthin. The second one is S. schweitzeri, found in humans and animals from Central and West Africa. In late 2021, two additional species, S. roterodami and S. singaporensis, have been described from clinical samples from Southeast Asia. In the present study, isolates and their genome sequences from wild Straw-coloured fruit bats (Eidolon helvum) and a Diamond firetail (Stagonopleura guttata, an estrildid finch) kept in a German aviary are described. The isolates possessed staphyloxanthin genes and were closer related to S. argenteus and S. schweitzeri than to S. aureus. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that they were nearly identical to both, S. roterodami and S. singaporensis. We propose considering the study isolates, the recently described S. roterodami and S. singaporensis as well as some Chinese strains with MLST profiles stored in the PubMLST database as different clonal complexes within one new species. According to the principle of priority we propose it should be named S. roterodami. This species is more widespread than previously believed, being observed in West Africa, Southeast Asia and Southern China. It has a zoonotic connection to bats and has been shown to be capable of causing skin and soft tissue infections in humans. It is positive for staphyloxanthin, and it could be mis-identified as S. aureus (or S. argenteus) using routine procedures. However, it can be identified based on distinct MLST alleles, and "S. aureus" sequence types ST2470, ST3135, ST3952, ST3960, ST3961, ST3963, ST3965, ST3980, ST4014, ST4075, ST4076, ST4185, ST4326, ST4569, ST6105, ST6106, ST6107, ST6108, ST6109, ST6999 and ST7342 belong to this species.

Abstract:Non-culture based surveys show that the bacterial family Orbaceae is widespread in guts of insects, including wild Drosophila . Relatively few isolates have been described, and none has been described from Drosophila . We present the isolation and characterization of five strains of Orbaceae from wild-caught flies of the genera Drosophila (Diptera: Drosophilidae) and Neogriphoneura (Diptera: Lauxaniidae). Cells are generally rod-shaped, mesophilic, and measure 0.8–2.0 μm long by 0.3–0.5 μm wide. Optimal growth was observed under ambient atmosphere. Reconstruction of phylogenies from the 16S rRNA gene and from single-copy orthologs verify placement of these strains within Orbaceae . Cells exhibited similar fatty acid profiles to those of other Orbaceae . Strain lpD01 T shared 74% average nucleotide identity (ANI) with its closest relatives Ca. Schmidhempelia bombi Bimp and Zophobihabitans entericus IPMB12 T . Results from multiple genome-wide similarity comparisons indicate lpD01 T should be classified as a novel species within a novel genus. The major respiratory quinone for lpD01 T is ubiquinone Q-8. lpD02 T , lpD03, lpD04 T , and BiB T are more closely related to Orbus hercynius CN3 T (76, 77, 76, and 77% ANI, respectively) than to other described Orbaceae . Genomic and phylogenetic analyses suggest that lpD03 and lpD04 T belong to the same species and that lpD02 T , lpD03/lpD04 T , and BiB T are each novel species of the genus Orbus . The proposed names of these strains are Utexia brackfieldae gen. nov., sp. nov. (type strain lpD01 T =NCIMB 15517 T =ATCC TSD-399 T ), Orbus sturtevantii sp. nov (type strain lpD02 T =NCIMB 15518 T =ATCC TSD-400 T ), Orbus wheelerorum sp. nov. (type strain lpD04 T =NCIMB 15520 T =ATCC TSD-401 T ), and Orbus mooreae sp. nov (type strain BiB T =NCIMB 15516 T =ATCC TSD-402 T ). The isolation and characterization of these strains expands the repertoire of culturable bacteria naturally associated with insects, including the model organism D. melanogaster .

Abstract:Sphaeriusidae is a small family of tiny aquatic beetles in the suborder Myxophaga. In this study we characterize two new sphaeriusid fossils from the mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber with the help of confocal laser scanning microscopy. Sphaerius martini Li & Cai sp. nov. displays similarities with both extant Bezesporum and Sphaerius, although it can be readily recognized based on the parallel-sided prosternum. Crowsonaerius minutus Li & Cai gen. et sp. nov. differs from other genera of Sphaeriusidae in having unreduced apical maxillary palpomeres, lowered mesoventrite, large metacoxal plates, separated mesotrochanter and mesofemur, and equal pretarsal claws. The present study demonstrates the efficacy of confocal microscopy in studying minute and dark bioinclusions in amber.urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:6E6EDC20-744A-4A75-849A-4B6126628C15.

Spatulaphorus imbricatipes (Mahunka, 1980) comb. nov. is moved from Pygmephorellus. A key to the world species of the genus Spatulaphorus is also provided.

Validity and reliability of a new short verbal rating scale for stress for use in clinical practice

Abstract:Stress is a common experience that affects the body and the brain in many ways. It can sometimes be of interest in research and clinical practice to measure the intensity of single stress reactions. For example, data on intensity can be important for understanding factors such as stress-related behaviour and pain and for a better understanding of physiological stress reactions in hormones, muscles and the circulatory system. Stress can be measured in a number of ways, including shifts in the production of cortisol and adrenaline and in skin conductance. But performing such tests is not without its difficulties, and the results can be hard to evaluate. An alternative to physiological measurements is verbal instruments. According to a search at PubMed in November 2013 and discussions with colleagues, those that have been developed so far involve many issues and, as a result, take time to answer. Two examples are the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC) with 20 items (1) and the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC) with 37 items (2). However, there is a need for an instrument that assesses the intensity of single stress attacks in a simple, valid and reliable way, and we have not been able to find one. A short verbal rating scale for stress (VRSS), reporting recent or present experience of stress and easy to use in clinical routine settings and research, would meet this demand. An important issue in the development of such an instrument is how it operates, including the theoretical framework, the context of the application and the selection of optimal responses. These are also the key factors that define how we measure the quality of an instrument (3). Instruments capturing stress should be valid and reliable, easy to understand and use and have good compliance. The aim of this study was therefore to test a new VRSS developed by one of the authors. The material consisted of two samples. The first included 28 children, seven boys and 21 girls, with a mean age of 12.6 years (range: seven to 16) visiting a clinic for recurrent pain. The second sample consisted of 34 children, 15 boys and 19 girls, aged 11.3 years (range: eight to 16). Fifteen of them were recruited from the same clinic as the first sample, and 19 were recruited from a clinic for children with needle phobias. All the children indicated that they knew what stress was and all of them were able to describe their own feeling of stress. After a brief talk about the child’s stress reaction, the child was asked to describe their latest stressful experience in a few words. For the children attending the pain clinic, this incident had happened during the last few days and not longer than a week ago. The children with needle phobias described the stress they felt when they came in for a practice injection. The researchers used a new verbal rating scale for stress (VRSS), based on a scale of zero to five, that had been developed, tested and retested in school age children, in collaboration with two psychologists. The VRSS provides an easy to understand scale that offers the children alternative responses when it comes to describing an increase in their stress levels (see Appendix). Validity of a scale is best evaluated by comparing it with a validated scale measuring the same parameter. But such a scale could not be found, so we measured the agreement between the VRSS and a visual analogue scale (VAS) measuring the same phenomenon. This was done in both groups. The child was asked to choose one of six alternatives on the VRSS to report how strong the latest experienced stress (VRSS1) was and to report the same experience on a visual analogue scale (VAS1) with the written anchors ‘no stress’ and ‘the worst known stress.’

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> Three new species, closely related to Sphaerostilbella broomeana, are described from the USA and India. These species form septate conidia from simple conidiophores with individual branches terminating in a single phialide and chlamydospores. Teleomorphs, known for S. broomeana and S. appalachiensis, are characterised by hairy perithecia and fusiform, apiculate, and conspicuously warted ascospores. This combination of characters distinguishes the S. broomeana-group from other members of Sphaerostilbella that all form gliocladium-type anamorphs and mostly grow on basidiomata of Stereum spp. Like in other species of the genus, the majority of hosts of the species described in this paper belong to wood-inhabiting taxa of Russulales. Sphaerostilbella broomeana had been recorded from a few regions in Europe and exclusively on Heterobasidion annosum. Herein, it is reported also from H. parviporum in many other localities and on H. insulare s.l. at the foothills of the Himalayas. Its sister species, found in the same region in northern India on another member of Russulales (Dichostereum effuscatum), is described as S. himalayensis. The two species described from North America colonize polypores from various taxa. Whereas S. appalachiensis occurs in eastern USA, with H. irregulare among its hosts, S. toxica is so far known only from two locations in eastern Texas, growing on Gloeophyllum striatum (Polyporales). Despite their great similarity in morphology and ITS rDNA, TEF1 sequences clearly distinguish these two North-American species. Moreover, the two strains of S. toxica appeared metabolically distinct as their organic extracts strongly inhibited the growth of human pathogenic microbes grown in vitro. Phylogenetic analysis of rDNA sequences supports monophyly of the genus Sphaerostilbella and the included S. broomeana-group, established here.

Abstract:Philaenus spumarius (Linnaeus, 1758) (Hemiptera, Aphrophoridae) was recently classified as a pest due to its ability to act as a vector of the phytopathogen Xylella fastidiosa. This insect has been reported to harbour several symbiotic bacteria that play essential roles in P. spumarius health and fitness. However, the factors driving bacterial assemblages remain largely unexplored. Here, the bacteriome associated with different organs (head, abdomen, and genitalia) of males and females of P. spumarius was characterized using culturally dependent and independent methods and compared in terms of diversity and composition. The bacteriome of P. spumarius is enriched in Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Actinobacteria phyla, as well as in Candidatus Sulcia and Cutibacterium genera. The most frequent isolates were Curtobacterium, Pseudomonas, and Rhizobiaceae sp.1. Males display a more diverse bacterial community than females, but no differences in diversity were found in distinct organs. However, the organ shapes the bacteriome structure more than sex, with the Microbacteriaceae family revealing a high level of organ specificity and the Blattabacteriaceae family showing a high level of sex specificity. Several symbiotic bacterial genera were identified in P. spumarius for the first time, including Rhodococcus, Citrobacter, Halomonas, Streptomyces, and Providencia. Differences in the bacterial composition within P. spumarius organs and sexes suggest an adaptation of bacteria to particular insect tissues, potentially shaped by their significance in the life and overall fitness of P. spumarius. Although more research on the bacteria of P. spumarius interactions is needed, such knowledge could help to develop specific bacterial-based insect management strategies.

Abstract:Several populations belonging to the genus Staurosirella have been observed in European rivers that were previously identified as Staurosirella pinnata . In light of the recent taxonomic revisions of the genus Staurosirella , the morphology of the unknown Staurosirella populations has been critically investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. Following the comparison with previously described Staurosirella species, five taxa could not be identified using the currently available literature on the genus. These five taxa are described as new based on differences in valve outline; shape, size and structure of the apical pore fields; structure of the striae; and the presence, position and structure of the marginal spines. Two new species were described using historic collection material: Staurosirella binodiformis sp. nov. and Svanheurckiana sp. nov. Two new species were observed in samples from rivers in Flanders: S. marginostriata sp. nov. and S. stoksiana sp. nov. whereas a fifth species was observed in rivers from Iceland: S. jonssoniana sp. nov. All new species are compared with similar Staurosirella species worldwide. Notes are added on their ecological preferences derived from both physicochemical data and the associated diatom flora.

Abstract:The former Synedra rumpens complex has long puzzled diatom taxonomists. In the nineteenth century, many infraspecific taxa were described as varieties or forms of S. rumpens. In the present study, type material of Synedra rumpens and several infraspecific taxa such as S. rumpens var. fragilarioides and S. familiaris f. parva and f. major was investigated using LM and SEM observations. For comparison, the original material of several other relevant diatom taxa (such as Fragilaria perdelicatissima, F. spinaspeciosa, Synedra campyla, S. vaucheriae var. distans) was also analysed. The results based on these comparisons show that all infraspecific taxa should be split from Fragilaria rumpens. Fragilaria campyla is a new combination within the genus Fragilaria with F. parva and S. (rumpens var.?) familiaris f. major as synonyms. Fragilaria scotica is likewise a new combination in Fragilaria. Fragilaria metcalfeana is proposed as new name for Synedra familiaris var. neogena. The analysis of F. distans and F. fragilarioides confirmed their conspecificity, with F. fragilarioides having priority as name. Finally, two new species, F. pseudofamiliaris Van de Vijver, T.M.Schuster, Kusber et D.M.Williams sp. nov. and F. bahlsiana Van de Vijver, C.E.Wetzel et Ector sp. nov. are described. Using an analysis of the associated diatom flora, the ecological preferences of each taxon are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Eighty-eight species of Senometopia Macquart, 1834 (Diptera, Tachinidae) from the eastern Palaearctic and Oriental regions are revised. Argyrothelaira Townsend, 1916 and Catacarcelia Townsend, 1927 are newly synonymized with Senometopia. Forty-two new species are described. The following 11 new combinations are proposed: S. aurata (Townsend, 1927) comb. nov., S. bakeri (Townsend, 1928) comb. nov., S. ceylanica (Townsend, 1919) comb. nov., S. cinerea (Brauer & Bergenstamm, 1891) comb. nov., S. dammermani (Baranov, 1934) comb. nov., S. froggattii (Townsend, 1916) comb. nov., S. indica (Baranov, 1934) comb. nov., S. muscoides (Walker, 1856) comb. nov., S. rufiventris (Malloch, 1935) comb. nov., S. singgalangia (Townsend, 1927) comb. nov., and S. sumatrana (Townsend, 1927) comb. nov. The following new synonyms are proposed: Carcelia secunda Baranov, 1931 with Carcelia prima Baranov, 1931 syn. nov., Parexorista gentilis Wulp, 1893 and Carcelia (Senometopia) dentata Chao et Liang, 2002 with Parexorista ridibunda Walker, 1860 syn. nov. and Eucarcelia orientalis Shima, 1968 with Carcelia rufa Baranov, 1931 syn. nov. All known species are redescribed and illustrated, and species groupings of the genus is briefly discussed. Abstract:A technique is described, feedforward signal regeneration (FFSR), to combat the effects of multipath propagation on VHF and UHF pilot tone single sideband (SSB) mobile radio systems. Unlike feedforward automatic gain control (FFAGC), FFSR suppresses both the random amplitude and phase fluctuations in the received signal. Extensive laboratory and field tests have shown that the operation of SSB at UHF frequencies is a viable proposition for both speech and data communication.

Abstract:The genus Samsoniella was erected based on orange cylindrical to clavate stromata, superficial perithecia and conidiophores with Isaria -like phialides and to segregate them from the Akanthomyces group. In this study, based on morphological features and multigene ( SSU , LSU , TEF , RPB1 and RPB2 ) phylogenetic analysis six Samsoniella species parasitizing spiders were collected in China. Three of them belong to known species S. alpina , S. erucae and S. hepiali . Three new species S. anhuiensis sp. nov. , S. aranea sp. nov. and S. fusiformispora sp. nov. are illustrated and described. They are clearly distinct from other species in Samsoniella occurring in independent subclades. Furthermore, among the four insect-pathogenic fungi specimens collected from similar sites, three of them were identified as the new species described below. Our study significantly broadens the host range of Samsoniella from Insecta to Arachnida , marking a noteworthy expansion in understanding the ecological associations of these fungi. Additionally, the identification of both mononematous and synnematous conidiophores in our study not only expands the knowledge of Samsoniella species but also provides a basis for future research by comparing the ecological significance between these conidiophore types. In conclusion, our study enhances the understanding of Samsoniella diversity, presenting a refined phylogenetic framework and shedding light on the ecological roles of these fungi in spider parasitism.

Abstract:We evaluated the bacteria occurring externally on Musca domestica and Chrysomya megacephala, the two most common synanthropic flies which may be found at many refuse sites throughout the world. Bacteria cultured from 10 specimens of each species were isolated, Gram-stained and examined microscopically, and divided into morphologically distinct pseudospecies', to avoid excessive duplication of genetic identification. About 350 bp of the 16S ribosomalRNAgene was amplified from genomicDNAextracted from each pseudospecies', sequenced, and bacteria identified using BLASTn. Nineteen different types of colony were identified from M. domestica, with Pseudomonas sp. and Swine Manure Bacterium SP14 being most abundant. Chrysomya megacephala yielded 15 distinct pseudospecies with total colony counts approximating to 10 000 from 10 plates, where 80 % of colonies were non-pathogenic Bacillus pumilus. A total of 18 species were identified genetically: three shared by the fly species; four unique to C. megacephala, and 13 unique to M. domestica. Half of these 18 species were pathogenic, two or three others were food spoilers and the rest were environmental or commensal bacteria from soil or plant matter. This study added three new pathogenic strains of bacteria and one new environmental strain to the list of bacteria reported to be vectored by these flies.
