Abstract:Fomitiporella has been phylogenetically studied in order to taxonomically treat it more naturally. In order to establish Fomitiporella s.s., studies on the holotype of F. umbrinella (the type species of Fomitiporella), and new specimens from the type locality, were carried out. Additionally, the holotype of Fuscoporella coruscans (the type species of Fuscoporella) was studied. A new morphological conceptual delimitation of Fomitiporella s.s. is presented, with a more restricted distribution pattern, and Fuscoporella is chosen as a synonym of Fomitiporella. Moreover, Rajchenbergia, gen. nov. is segregated from Fomitiporella s.l. based on morphology, phylogenetic relationships and host distribution. Taxonomic implications for the group and other related taxa are discussed. Fomitiporella americana is synonymized with F. umbrinella, F. micropora with Fomitiporella coruscans, comb. nov., and F. melleopora is now in Tropicoporus melleoporus, comb. nov., based on type and reference material studies.

Is it all Phacelia pinnatifida? Molecular delimitations and taxonomic revision of Phacelia sect. Glandulosae in South America based on ddRADseq

Abstract:Phacelia sect. Glandulosae, with ca. 62 taxa, is the most diverse of the 11 sections of the genus Phacelia (Hydrophyllaceae). The family is largely restricted to North and Central America, but the genus Phacelia has an amphitropical distribution with nine species reported from western South America, five of which have been assigned to P. sect. Glandulosae. These species are found in arid to semi‐arid Andean habitats between 1000 and 5000 m a.s.l. Species delimitation has long been confounded for this plant group in South America by some degree of taxonomic chaos – lack of typifications, dozens of synonyms, different names used for the same taxon between different countries – and poor representation in molecular phylogenies. Here, we try to improve our understanding by employing a ddRADseq strategy to investigate phylogenetic relationships of all South American representatives of P. sect. Glandulosae based on a total of 33 sampled specimens. Both maximum likelihood and species tree inference analyses of the ddRADseq data resulted in a well‐resolved topology. All five species currently recognized in P. sect. Glandulosae in South America form a highly supported monophylum including P. nana, previously considered as belonging to P. sect. Euglypta. However, the currently recognized morphospecies form a clade with very short branch lengths indicating coalescence processes at the level of population, except for P. artemisioides, which is clearly sister to the rest. Additionally, different morphospecies and ecotypes are largely retrieved as poly‐ and/or paraphyletic. Based on these results and on re‐evaluation of the morphological characters traditionally used to delineate species within P. sect. Glandulosae, we argue that these characters are of limited diagnostic value. We recommend recognizing only two South American species within this section: polymorphic P. pinnatifida and its closely related sister species P. artemisioides. A revised formal taxonomy is provided.

Abstract:Xerampelinae is a subsection composed of species of ectomycorrhizal fungi belonging to the hyperdiverse and cosmopolitan genus Russula (Russulales). Species of Xerampelinae are recognized by their fishy or shrimp odor, browning context, and a green reaction to iron sulfate. However, species delimitation has traditionally relied on morphology and analysis of limited molecular data. Prior taxonomic work in Xerampelinae has led to the description of as many as 59 taxa in Europe and 19 in North America. Here we provide the first multilocus phylogeny of European and North American members based on two nrDNA loci and two protein-coding genes. The resulting phylogeny supports the recognition of 17 species-rank Xerampelinae clades; however, higher species richness (~23) is suggested by a more inclusive nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer region ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 (ITS barcode) analysis. Phylogenetic and morphological analyses support three new species with restricted geographic distributions: R. lapponica, R. neopascua , and R. olympiana . We confirm that the European species R. subrubens is present in North America and the North American species R. serissima (previously known as R. favrei ) is present in Europe. Most other Xerampelinae appear restricted to either North America or Eurasia, which indicates a high degree of regional endemism; this includes R. xerampelina , a name widely applied to North American taxa, but a species restricted to Eurasia.

All currently available DNA barcode (partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene) sequences of this subgenus (217 sequences of 54 species) are employed in a molecular analysis using different species delimitation methods. The results indicate that approximately 68.5% (37 of 54 spp.) of Phortica (s. str.) species could be clearly distinguished from closely related morphospecies or cryptic species.

Abstract:Background: Polystemma is characterized by a mixed indumentum of glandular trichomes that turn white, rotate to rotate-campanulate corollas, a gynostegial corona with filiform appendages, and fusiform follicles. The taxon has undergone numerous taxonomic changes in recent years. In current phylogenies, Polystemma has been recovered as paraphyletic and many of its species require a new combination. In this study, we propose the corresponding changes and describe, map, and illustrate three new species within this genus. Questions: Do morphological data support the transfer of Matelea species to Polystemma? Are the plants of Polystemma collected in Durango, Jalisco, and Sinaloa different species? Studied species: Polystemma. Study site and dates: United States, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua y Costa Rica, between 2022 and 2024. Methods: More than 3,000 specimens from 20 herbaria and virtual databases were reviewed. Distribution maps were generated, and risk categories were proposed. The cohesive species concept was proposed as an explanatory hypothesis for taxon recognition. Results: A total of 27 species of the genus were recognized, these distributed from the southeastern United States of America to Costa Rica. Eleven new combinations and three lectotypifications are made, and three new species for science are proposed. Identification key, nomenclatural type information, synonyms, habitat, images of all species and distribution maps are also included. Conclusions: The review of this genus allowed for updating and improving the systematics within the subtribe Gonolobinae. Likewise, it highlights Mexico as the center of diversity and endemism for Polystemma.

Abstract:Novel species of microfungi described in the present study include the following from South Africa: Cercosporella dolichandrae from Dolichandra unguiscati, Seiridium podocarpi from Podocarpus latifolius, Pseudocercospora parapseudarthriae from Pseudarthria hookeri, Neodevriesia coryneliae from Corynelia uberata on leaves of Afrocarpus falcatus, Ramichloridium eucleae from Euclea undulata and Stachybotrys aloeticola from Aloe sp. (South Africa), as novel member of the Stachybotriaceae fam. nov. Several species were also described from Zambia, and these include Chaetomella zambiensis on unknown Fabaceae, Schizoparme pseudogranati from Terminalia stuhlmannii, Diaporthe isoberliniae from Isoberlinia angolensis, Peyronellaea combreti from Combretum mossambiciensis, Zasmidium rothmanniae and Phaeococcomyces rothmanniae from Rothmannia engleriana, Diaporthe vangueriae from Vangueria infausta and Diaporthe parapterocarpi from Pterocarpus brenanii. A review of recently introduced Aspergillus, Penicillium, Talaromyces and other Eurotiales species

Abstract:The order Eurotiales is diverse and includes species that impact our daily lives in many ways. In the past, its taxonomy was difficult due to morphological similarities, which made accurate identification of species difficult. This situation improved and stabilised with recent taxonomic and nomenclatural revisions that modernised Aspergillus , Penicillium and Talaromyces . This was mainly due to the availability of curated accepted species lists and the publication of comprehensive DNA sequence reference datasets. This has also led to a sharp increase in the number of new species described each year with the accepted species lists in turn also needing regular updates. The focus of this study was to review the 160 species described between the last list of accepted species published in 2020 until 31 December 2022. To review these species, single-gene phylogenies were constructed and GCPSR (Genealogical Concordance Phylogenetic Species Recognition) was applied. Multi-gene phylogenetic analyses were performed to further determine the relationships of the newly introduced species. As a result, we accepted 133 species (37 Aspergillus , two Paecilomyces , 59 Penicillium , two Rasamsonia , 32 Talaromyces and one Xerochrysium ), synonymised 22, classified four as doubtful and created a new combination for Paraxerochrysium coryli , which is classified in Xerochrysium . This brings the number of accepted species to 453 for Aspergillus , 12 for Paecilomyces , 535 for Penicillium , 14 for Rasamsonia , 203 for Talaromyces and four for Xerochrysium . We accept the newly introduced section Tenues (in Talaromyces ), and series Hainanici (in Aspergillus sect. Cavernicolarum ) and Vascosobrinhoana (in Penicillium sect. Citrina ). In addition, we validate the invalidly described species Aspergillus annui and A. saccharicola , and series Annuorum (in Aspergillus sect. Flavi ), introduce a new combination for Dichlaena lentisci (type of the genus) and place it in a new section in Aspergillus subgenus Circumdati , provide an updated description for Rasamsonia oblata , and list excluded and recently synonymised species that were previously accepted. This study represents an important update of the accepted species lists in Eurotiales .

Abstract:A technique is described, feedforward signal regeneration (FFSR), to combat the effects of multipath propagation on VHF and UHF pilot tone single sideband (SSB) mobile radio systems. Unlike feedforward automatic gain control (FFAGC), FFSR suppresses both the random amplitude and phase fluctuations in the received signal. Extensive laboratory and field tests have shown that the operation of SSB at UHF frequencies is a viable proposition for both speech and data communication.

Abstract:Based on seven- and three-gene datasets, we discuss four alternative approaches for a reclassification of Fomitopsidaceae ( Polyporales , Basidiomycota ). After taking into account morphological diversity in the family, we argue in favour of distinguishing three genera only, viz. Anthoporia , Antrodia and Fomitopsis . Fomitopsis becomes a large genus with 128 accepted species, containing almost all former Fomitopsis spp. and most species formerly placed in Antrodia , Daedalea and Laccocephalum . Genera Buglossoporus , Cartilosoma , Daedalea , Melanoporia , Neolentiporus , alongside twenty others, are treated as synonyms of Fomitopsis . This generic scheme allows for morphologically distinct genera in Fomitopsidaceae , unlike other schemes we considered. We provide arguments for retaining Fomitopsis and suppressing earlier ( Daedalea , Caloporus ) or simultaneously published generic names ( Piptoporus ) considered here as its synonyms. Taxonomy of nine species complexes in the genus is revised based on ITS, ITS + TEF1 , ITS + TEF1 + RPB1 and ITS + TEF1 + RPB2 datasets. In total, 17 species are described as new to science, 26 older species are reinstated and 26 currently accepted species names are relegated to synonymy. A condensed identification key for all accepted species in the genus is provided.

Abstract:Phlebia s.l. (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) accommodates numerous species of wood-inhabiting fungi within the phylum Basidiomycota. The present study employs the morphological and phylogenetic approaches to revise the generic and species classification of Phlebia s.l. and surveys the species diversity. The phylogenetic analyses were performed using multiple gene regions viz. the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), the large subunit nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nLSU), the translation elongation factor 1-α (tef1), the small subunit of mitochondrial rRNA gene (mtSSU), the glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), RNA polymerase II largest subunit (rpb1), and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (rpb2). We overall recognize twenty genera of Phlebia s.l., including three new genera viz. Ceriporiopsoides, Phlebicolorata, and Pseudophlebia, seven new species viz. Crustodontia rhododendri, Hydnophlebia fissurata, Luteoporia straminea, Merulius sinensis, Mycoaciella brunneospina, Phlebia niveomarginata, and P. poroides and seventeen new combinations viz. Ceriporiopsoides guidella, C. lagerheimii, Hydnophlebia acanthocystis, H. capsica, H. fimbriata, Merulius fuscotuberculatus, M. nantahaliensis, M. tomentopileatus, Mycoacia tuberculata, Mycoaciella uda, Phlebicolorata alboaurantia, Ph. brevispora, Ph. pseudoplacenta, Ph. rosea, Pseudophlebia lindtneri, Ps. semisupina, and Ps. setulosa. Descriptions, illustrations, phylogenetic trees to show the placements, and notes of new taxa are provided.

Abstract:The phylogenetic position of several clitocyboid/pleurotoid/tricholomatoid genera previously considered incertae sedis is here resolved using an updated 6-gene dataset of Agaricales including newly sequenced lineages and more complete data from those already analyzed before. Results allowed to infer new phylogenetic relationships, and propose taxonomic novelties to accommodate them, including up to ten new families and a new suborder. Giacomia (for which a new species from China is here described) forms a monophyletic clade with Melanoleuca ( Melanoleucaceae ) nested inside suborder Pluteineae , together with the families Pluteaceae , Amanitaceae (including Leucocortinarius ), Limnoperdaceae and Volvariellaceae . The recently described family Asproinocybaceae is shown to be a later synonym of Lyophyllaceae (which includes also Omphaliaster and Trichocybe ) within suborder Tricholomatineae . The families Biannulariaceae , Callistosporiaceae , Clitocybaceae , Fayodiaceae , Macrocystidiaceae (which includes Pseudoclitopilus ), Entolomataceae , Pseudoclitocybaceae (which includes Aspropaxillus ), Omphalinaceae ( Infundibulicybe and Omphalina ) and the new families Paralepistaceae and Pseudoomphalinaceae belong also to Tricholomatineae . The delimitation of the suborder Pleurotineae (= Schizophyllineae ) is discussed and revised, accepting five distinct families within it, viz . Pleurotaceae , Cyphellopsidaceae , Fistulinaceae , Resupinataceae and Schizophyllaceae . The recently proposed suborder Phyllotopsidineae (= Sarcomyxineae ) is found to encompass the families Aphroditeolaceae , Pterulaceae , Phyllotopsidaceae , Radulomycetaceae , Sarcomyxaceae (which includes Tectella ), and Stephanosporaceae , all of them unrelated to Pleurotaceae (suborder Pleurotineae ) or Typhulaceae (suborder Typhulineae ). The new family Xeromphalinaceae , encompassing the genera Xeromphalina and Heimiomyces , is proposed within Marasmiineae . The suborder Hygrophorineae is here reorganized into the families Hygrophoraceae , Cantharellulaceae , Cuphophyllaceae , Hygrocybaceae and Lichenomphaliaceae , to homogenize the taxonomic rank of the main clades inside all suborders of Agaricales . Finally, the genus Hygrophorocybe is shown to represent a distinct clade inside Cuphophyllaceae , and the new combination H. carolinensis is proposed.

Abstract:Clitocybe umbrinopurpurascens, a rare species thus far known only from Morocco, is redescribed based on fresh collections made in Calabria (South Italy). Photographs of fresh material and drawings of the main micromorphological features of the species are provided. The type collection, in poor condition and not suitable for molecular analysis, was restudied macro- and micromorphologically and was found fully identical with the collections from Calabria. Based on molecular data, this species belongs to the genus Pseudoomphalina (type Omphalia kalchbrenneri) and the genus Neohygrophorus is treated as a synonym of Pseudoomphalina. A collection from Calabria is chosen as an epitype for P. umbrinopurpurascens. Our morphological and molecular revision of other Pseudoomphalina species did not provide evidence supporting the placement of Agaricus pachyphyllus in Pseudomphalina, or any other of the allied genera, therefore, for this species the new genus Pseudolaccaria is introduced. As there are no extant original herbarium specimens, a lectotype and epitype for Omphalia kalchbrenneri and a neotype for Agaricus pachyphyllus are designated.

Abstract:Studies of the morphology and the 45S nuc rDNA phylogeny of three potentially undescribed arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (phylum Glomeromycota) grown in cultures showed that one of these fungi is a new species of the genus Diversispora in the family Diversisporaceae; the other two fungi are new Scutellospora species in Scutellosporaceae. Diversispora vistulana sp. nov. came from maritime sand dunes of the Vistula Spit in northern Poland, and S. graeca sp. nov. and S. intraundulata sp. nov. originally inhabited the Mediterranean dunes of the Peloponnese Peninsula, Greece. In addition, the morphological description of spores of Acaulospora gedanensis , originally described in 1988, was emended based on newly found specimens, and the so far unknown phylogeny of this species was determined. The phylogenetic analyses of 45S sequences placed this species among Acaulospora species with atypical phenotypic and histochemical features of components of the two inner germinal walls.

Abstract:The phlebioid clade (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) accommodates numerous species of corticioid and polyporoid fungi of the Phanerochaetaceae, Irpicaceae, and Meruliaceae. The present study used morphological and phylogenetic approaches to revise the generic classification of the phlebioid clade and survey species diversity. The phylogenetic analyses were performed using sequences of multiple genes, including the nuc rDNA ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 (ITS), the D1-D2 domains of 28S rDNA (28S), the RNA polymerase II largest subunit (rpb1), the RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (rpb2), and the translation elongation factor 1-α (tef1). We overall recognize 57 genera including six new ones (Alboefibula, Cremeoderma, Gelatinofungus, Luteochaete, Phanerochaetella and Quasiphlebia). We describe 26 new species belonging to 15 genera (Alboefibula bambusicola, A. gracilis, Crustodontia taiwanensis, Cytidiella albomarginata, Efibula matsuensis, E. turgida, E. subglobispora, Gelatinofungus brunneus, Hydnophlebia aurantia, H. crocata, Irpex lenis, Mycoaciella efibulata, Phanerochaete alpina, P. crystallina, P. guangdongensis, P. rhizomorpha, P. spadicea, P. subcarnosa, Phanerochaetella formosana, Phlebiopsis odontoidea, P. yushaniae, Quasiphlebia densa, Rhizochaete chinensis, Roseograndinia jilinensis, R. minispora, and Scopuloides allantoidea), and present 18 new combinations belonging to 12 genera (Cremeoderma unicum, Crustodontia nigrodontea, C. tongxiniana, Cytidiella albida, Efibula intertexta, Hydnophlebia alachuana, Irpex laceratus, I. latemarginatus, I. rosettiformis, Luteochaete subglobosa, Luteoporia lutea, Phanerochaetella angustocystidiata, P. exilis, P. leptoderma, P. xerophila, Phlebiopsis alba, Rhizochaete lutea, Scopuloides dimorpha). Descriptions, illustrations and notes of new species and some new records are provided, as well as identification keys to genera of each family.

Abstract:Droloxifene (DROL) is a new antiestrogen which is used for the treatment of endocrine-responsive breast cancer in humans. As Droloxifene exists in a Z- and E-isomer, we investigated the main pharmacological properties of both isomers. For both compounds the following tests were conducted: affinity for the estrogen receptor (ER); effect on the growth of rat uteri; influence on the growth of the ER + human breast cancer cell line ZR-75; and isomer interconversion in vitro. DROL-(Z) had binding affinity to the cytosolic ER approximately ten times lower than that of DROL-(E). Furthermore, the estrogenic effect of DROL-(Z) in the rat uterus is weak and there is no antiestrogenic activity. The lack of antiestrogenic activity of DROL-(Z) in contrast to DROL-(E) could also be shown in the human breast cancer cells ZR-75. Thus DROL-(Z) is, as far as investigated, without antiestrogenic and estrogenic activities. Of note is the stability of both DROL-isomers. There is no interconversion or metabolism of the parent compounds DROL-(E) and DROL-(Z) in vitro.
Reconsideration of Protocrea (Hypocreales, Hypocreaceae)

Abstract:The genus Protocrea is redefined, based on holotype and fresh specimens of its type species P. farinosa, using morphology of teleomorph and anamorph and phylogenetic analyses of rpb2 sequences. Data based on currently available specimens suggest the existence of three well defined and three still unnamed species. Apart from the type, P. farinosa, none of the species originally included are accepted in the genus. Species of Protocrea are characterized by perithecia formed in or on a subiculum, bicellular ascospores that disarticulate at the septum while still in the ascus and by anamorphs belonging to Gliocladium sensu stricto. For Hypocrea farinosa sensu auct. the new species H. decipiens is introduced. Hypocrea pallida is recognized as a species of Protocrea. It is closely related to P. farinosa, morphologically, phylogenetically and by habit. Protocrea illinoënsis is described here as the sister taxon of P. farinosa found in the USA. All species are polyporicolous, with the principal hosts Skeletocutis nivea for P. farinosa and P. illinoënsis, and species of Oligoporus/Tyromyces for P. pallida. In addition to hosts the main differences among these species are a stronger (orange) pigmentation of perithecia and subiculum in P. pallida and a violaceous KOH reaction in P. pallida and P. illinoënsis. P. farinosa is known only from Europe with certainty and P. illinoënsis only from the USA, while P. pallida is probably cosmopolitan. Putative synonymy of some similar species is discussed.
