Abstract:The performance tests of one type (named PDM-101) of silicon semiconductor dosimeter were carried out by using a 60Co point source (approximately 500 kBq). The dosimeter responds to dose equivalents on the order of 0.02 microSv although measured data show a large error for values < 0.08 microSv. The deviation of measured dose equivalents from calculated ones was < 10% in the region > or = 0.08 microSv. The deviation of measured dose equivalent rates from calculated ones was generally < 10%. The average value of measured dose equivalents for 31 directional exposures without underside exposure was 0.92 +/- 0.06 of the calculated value. The difference of measured data for the front and back exposure was < 10%. The background and noise level of the dosimeter was 0.092 +/- 0.005 microSv h-1. All measured data showed that dosimeter response for radiation was symmetric between the front (left) and the back (right) sides of the dosimeter within 10% tolerance.
Virtual reality simulation for mastery learning of wrist radiograph technique

Abstract:Introduction: Virtual reality (VR) simulation is a technology that empowers students and radiographers to practice radiography in a virtual environment that resembles real-life clinical scenarios. The purpose of this randomised study was to examine the relationship between clinical specialty and the ability to assess and obtain a lateral wrist radiograph using a VR simulator. Methods: Radiographers and radiography students were recruited from the EFRS Research Hub at the 2024 European Congress of Radiology. After completing a background questionnaire, participants entered a VR simulator where they assessed lateral wrist radiographs and, if necessary, attempted a retake. Fisher's exact test was used to evaluate the relationship between specialties and participants' ability to assess positioning and perform retakes. Rank-biserial correlation estimated the relationship between participants' ability to reposition the VR patient and their VR experience and self-perceived confidence in wrist radiograph positioning. Results: The cohort included 173 participants from 14 specialties across 21 countries. There was a borderline significant trend between clinical specialty and correct positioning assessment (p = 0.052) and between self-perceived confidence in acquiring wrist radiographs and repositioning for a retake (p = 0.052). Neither clinical specialty (p = 0.480) nor previous VR experience (p = 0.409) correlated with ability to reposition for a retake. Conclusion: While results indicated a potential correlation between participants' ability to position a VR patient and both clinical specialty and confidence in wrist radiography, these trends were not statistically significant. Nevertheless, the findings suggest that VR holds promise for radiography training, though further research is necessary to explore the factors that influence performance and learning. Implications for practice: The incorporation of VR technology into standard radiography training programs could potentially improve patient outcomes by ensuring that radiography students are more skilled at acquiring quality radiographs prior to their first clinical practice. It should be noted though, that knowledge on positioning criteria and anatomy is an advantage when practicing correct positioning in a VR simulator.
Insights into enhanced learning through virtual reality

Abstract:Introduction: This study investigates the impact of Immersive Virtual Reality (VR) on learning outcomes in radiography training using Virtual Medical Coaching's X-Ray Pro VR software. VR offers immersive experiential learning that may enhance academic performance and professional preparedness. Methods: The study involved 130 students from two consecutive cohorts: one using traditional training methods and the other using VR software. We employed a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative measures of academic performance and clinical competency with qualitative insights into student engagement, enjoyment, and stress levels. The VR group used Virtual Medical Coaching simulation software, while the traditional group used physical simulation machines (Siemens Healthineers) to practice positioning anthropomorphic manikins, adjusting exposure settings, and handling X-ray equipment. Data were collected at four points: immediately post-training and at 1 month, 3 months, and 8 months follow-up. Results: The VR cohort showed significantly higher knowledge retention, work readiness, and lower stress levels compared to the traditional cohort. Among the participants trained in VR, a vast majority (59 out of 65) reported a high level of satisfaction with the immersive nature of the training, emphasizing its realism and direct applicability to clinical scenarios. Quantitative analysis revealed superior performance metrics for the VR group across all measured time points (p < 0.001). Qualitative feedback highlighted enhanced engagement and enjoyment among VR-trained students. Conclusion: The results of this study clearly indicate that VR training significantly enhances learning outcomes in radiography education. The VR cohort exhibited higher knowledge retention, work readiness, student engagement, and enjoyment, along with lower stress levels and higher confidence compared to the traditional cohort. These findings support the integration of VR into professional training curricula to improve student performance and engagement.

Abstract:Intraoral radiography (IOR) practice education is essential for dental students. However, the risk of radiation exposure has resulted in the use of textbooks to learn IOR. Thus, a new educational tool that can effectively use fewer shots or provide indirect experience when practice is not feasible is needed. In this study, we developed a new educational tool called "educational media for the bisecting angle technique" using virtual reality (EMBAT-VR) and evaluated the user experience among students. IOR was divided into 12 steps for 14 teeth, and a scenario was prepared from the perspectives of the operator and patient. On the basis of this scenario, the IOR was reenacted and recorded using a 360° camera. The tool was built on a head-mounted display using the Unity Engine. Eighty-four students were enrolled to evaluate the task performance, browsing search, and satisfaction on a 5-point Likert scale; the corresponding values for the tests were 3. 78 ± 0.70, 3.88 ± 0.76, and 4.01 ± 0.71, respectively. EMBAT-VR was used to investigate the satisfaction (user experience). Responses to 21 questions from 24 students who used traditional textbooks (control group) and 22 students who used the VR educational tool (experimental group) were statistically analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test. A statistically significant difference was observed between the experimental (4.16 ± 0.64) and control (2.69 ± 0.54) groups. In the usability evaluation, EMBAT-VR presented with a higher score than traditional textbooks. Nonetheless, its effect when performing actual IOR imaging needs follow-up research.

Abstract:Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of student learning of anatomy and 3D imaging concepts using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and immersive virtual reality (VR) technology. Methodology: Ninety (n = 90) first year dental students with no previous experience in 3D imaging were recruited. All participants completed a 10-item, multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ) and a pre-survey prior to the educational intervention. Following a brief video orientation on CBCT and anatomy, each participant underwent a one-on-one educational intervention using immersive VR with calibrated instructors to identify head and neck anatomic structures using a VR/CBCT educational tool. Immediately following the intervention, all participants completed a postsurvey, a second MCQ, NASA task load index and presence questionnaires. Participants completed a third MCQ 2 weeks following the intervention. Analysis of objective measures of performance on MCQ's (p < 0.05) and subjective data from the questionnaires was completed. Results: The students doubled their mean test scores 2.45 ± 1.274 to 5.99 ± 1.576 on MCQ's immediately following the educational intervention (p < 0.05). The significant increase in the MCQ test scores was maintained after 2 weeks, 5.73 ± 1.721 (p < 0.05). There were no gender differences in student test performance. Students rated the immersive VR/CBCT educational intervention experience highly for control, sensory, and realism factors with minimal distraction and frustration factors. Conclusion: Results from this study show that immersive VR/CBCT educational intervention improved test performance and contributed to information recall in students. Further benefits reported by participants include the sense of presence and increased engagement using immersive VR.

Abstract:Background: A transformation of learning in nursing is necessary to prepare students for developing complex clinical environments. The essential aim of clinical nursing learning is to enhance the integration of theoretical knowledge in the clinical environment by using various innovative strategies, such as immersive virtual reality (VR) simulation to develop a learning process that allows students to gain knowledge and perform skills in a visually attractive way, which enhances the quality and safety of clinical learning through repeated exposure to educational content that supports students' cognitive and psychomotor skills. Objective: This study was aimed at determining the effectiveness of immersive VR simulation as a learning strategy on the acquisition of intramuscular injection skills in nursing education and the performance level of nursing students compared with a physical learning environment (low-fidelity simulation). Materials and Metods: The experimental design (pre-post-test) was used among first-year nursing students (N = 66) (control group = 33, hip model and experimental group = 33, VR simulation) of the summer semester of 2019-2020 in the Faculty of Nursing at Near East University in Cyprus. Results: There is a significant difference between both groups in performance psychomotor skills scores, and the mean was higher in the experimental group (P = 0.002) and a significantly longer period of time than in the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Immersive VR simulation is a supplementary tool and useful teaching-learning strategy for training in nursing education alongside physical laboratory (hip-model and mannequin) and psychomotor skills requiring the ordering of skill steps in teaching, and it provides realistic experiences in a safe environment instead of the unavailability of actual customers in clinical settings.
Stepping into the Virtual Realm: Examining the Utility of Non-Immersive VR on Medical Residents' Self-Efficacy, Performance, and Satisfaction

Abstract:Central Venous Catheterization (CVC) is conducted in more than 5 million patients annually in the United States. Currently, CVC theoretical knowledge is typically taught with didactic lectures with minimal assessment of knowledge before simulation training and clinical environment. To assess CVC theoretical knowledge, virtual reality (VR) can develop residents' surgical skills and can provide feedback on performance. While all types of VR can be used to assess improvements in residents' knowledge prior to simulation training, few studies have compared the impact of non-immersive VR on improving resident knowledge. The current study was developed to identify the utility of a non-immersive CathSim VR on improvements in resident CVC theoretical knowledge, self-efficacy, and satisfaction when compared to a traditional multiple-choice assessment This was completed through an empirical investigation with 34 medical residents. The results showed that when compared to a traditional multiple-choice assessment, the non-immersive CathSim VR assessment led to improvements in self-efficacy and potentially better learning experience. Meanwhile, results also showed that there were no differences in assessment score, number of attempts, and overall satisfaction. Thus, we can conclude that non-immersive VR has the potential to be more effective than traditional multiple-choice test in improving self-efficacy and is as effective for residents' assessment score, number of attempts, and overall satisfaction.
Bridging Visual-Spatial Ability and Skill Performance: The Impact of Perceived Quality of a Practical Seminar in Interventional Radiology Education

Abstract:Background: Medical education integrates skills training and simulation to prepare students for clinical tasks. A seminar on interventional radiology was restructured to include specific practical training utilizing a 3D-catheter model. We aimed to investigate the complex interplay between student evaluations, their visual-spatial ability and practical performance. Methods: The seminar comprised a short plenary introduction followed by 3 practical training units. Students were tested for their visual-spatial ability and their catheter insertion performance. Students rated the seminar and their interest in the subject. Data were subjected to descriptive, factorial, regression, and moderating analysis. Results: A total of 141 medical students enrolled in the seminar. They attributed a high didactic and practical quality and expressed great interest in the subject. Male students outperformed females in the cube perspective test. In the practical examination, males needed significantly less time on average (57.9 s) compared to females (73.1 s). However, there were no significant differences in the performance score, with a maximum of 5 attainable points: males 4.61 and females 4.51. The seminar evaluation explained a large portion of the variance (48.6%) in students' interest in the subject. There was a moderating role of practical quality (β = 0.12, P < .05) on the link between the cube perspective test and the practical examination: rated high practical quality could partly compensate for low cube perspective scores, enhancing performance in the practical examination. Conclusions: Well-designed practical courses and a perceived high teaching quality may assist students with deficits in visual-spatial ability to acquire clinical-practical skills. Such initiatives not only enhance learning outcomes across diverse student groups but also stimulate interest in specialized fields like interventional radiology, thereby potentially guiding future career paths in medicine.
The Effects of an Immersive Virtual Reality Application in First Person Point-of-View (IVRA-FPV) on The Learning and Generalized Performance of a Lumbar Puncture Medical Procedure

Abstract:Medical procedures require skilled reliability, precision, and efficiency. One way in which techniques could be taught to address these requirements is through immersive tutorials in virtual reality (VR), that employ a 3D video (filmed from the first-person point-of-view [FPV]), which is then displayed through an immersive VR application (IVRA-FPV). The present study assessed the pedagogical value of the IVRA-FPV training that taught participants how to implement a lumbar puncture. This procedure was recorded and the corresponding IVRA-FPV tutorial was produced. Medical users/learners (N = 89) were subjected to a prospective randomized comparative study comprised of one group that was assigned to the traditional lecture (n = 44) and the other group to the IVRA-FPV tutorial (n = 45). Each participant was then evaluated as they demonstrated the technique on a mannequin to assess their applied learning skillset generalization. Participants that attended the traditional lecture exhibited better answers during oral examination (p < 0.001). There was a trend with no significant difference regarding the evaluation of their applied learning skillset generalization (p = 0.78 n/s). When evaluating the applied learning outcomes for implementing the lumbar puncture, the IVRA-FPV group performed the procedure more efficiently with less errors and in less time (p < 0.01). These findings suggest that the IVRA-FPV training may increase the efficiency, by which a larger number of professionals can, in a short time-period, implement techniques reliably and correctly in real-world situations, without the need for expensive equipment.
Virtual reality simulation of panoramic radiographic anatomy for dental students

Abstract:Purpose: This work aimed to utilize virtual reality (VR) in dental radiographic anatomical interpretation in junior dental students and test if it can enhance student learning, engagement, and performance. Methods: VR software for panoramic anatomy was developed. Sixty-nine first-year dental students were divided into a control group (lecture-based) and an experimental group (VR) to learn panoramic radiographic anatomy. Both groups were then tested on knowledge via a 20-question quiz. Student feedback on VR experience was collected via an online survey. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between lecture-based and VR students in the correct identification of anatomical landmarks. Lecture-based students scored higher in identifying the ear lobe, hyoid bone, condylar neck, and external oblique ridge, whereas VR students scored higher in identifying zygoma (Chi-squared test, p < 0.005). The VR group reported high evaluation on all perception items of the online feedback survey on their experience (Student t-test, p < 0.005). Conclusions: Lecture-based students generally showed better performance in panoramic radiographic anatomy. Several structures were not correctly identified in both groups of novice students. The positive feedback of VR experience encourages future implementation in education to augment conventional methods of radiographic anatomy in dentistry with considerations to repeated exposures throughout undergraduate dental education.
Virtual Reality Simulation for the Acquisition and Retention of Electrocardiogram Interpretation Skills: A Randomized Controlled Trial Among Undergraduate Medical Students

Abstract:Introduction The electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most important tools in diagnosing cardiac abnormalities, particularly arrhythmias and myocardial infarction. It is one of the certifiable competencies for final-year medical undergraduate students. We determined virtual reality's effectiveness in acquiring and retaining ECG interpretation skills among medical students compared to traditional teaching. Methods One hundred and forty students were randomized into two groups. Seventy-one students (immersion group) were trained using virtual reality simulation to acquire and retain interpretation skills of normal and abnormal ECG. Sixty-nine students (traditional group) were trained in the classroom using chalk and board. The primary outcome of change in acquiring knowledge of the interpretation of ECG was determined by comparing pre and post-test scores. The secondary outcome of retention of knowledge was determined by comparing pre-test and second post-test scores conducted after eight weeks of intervention. The p-value of <0.05 was considered significant. Results Out of 140 students, 50 (35.7%) were males and 90 (64.3%) were female. The mean age of the students was 22.1 (SD 1.1), with 69.3% of them between the ages of 21 and 22 years. Mean pre-test scores for the interpretation of normal ECG among immersion and traditional groups were 9.8 (SD 8.4) and 8.3 (SD 7.5), respectively, and post-test scores for the acquisition of knowledge were 24.3 (SD 5.5) and 24.8 (SD 6.3), respectively. The post-test scores for retention skills were 25.3 (SD 5.6) and 20.7 (SD 6.9) respectively (p<0.001). The mean pre-test scores for the interpretation of abnormal ECG of both groups were 7.0 (SD 6) and 8.3 (SD 6.6), respectively. Mean post-test scores for acquiring knowledge to interpret abnormal ECG were 23.5 (SD 6.2) and 17.7 (SD 9), respectively (p<0.001), and mean post-test scores for retention of interpretation skills of abnormal ECG were 19.2 (SD - 6.9) and 13.3 (SD 10.2) respectively (p=0.001). The pairwise comparison of the immersion group indicates that all the combinations that changed in score from the pre to post-intervention time points, from pre-to-retention time, and from the post-to-retention time were significant (p<0.001). Conclusion Virtual reality teaching had a better impact on acquiring and retaining the skill for interpreting normal and abnormal electrocardiograms.

Abstract:A fundamental property of microbial systems, which are the central part of fermentation plants, is their structural variability. From the viewpoint of process control, this imposes serious difficulties because the problem of controlling variable structure plants is analytically unsolved. However, the amalgamation of some nonstandard methodologies offers possibilities for handling the variable structure phenomenon. Of special interest is the knowledge-based pattern recognition approach, which provides a natural basis for classification of the structural state of the microbial systems, and is well-suited to their uncertain characteristics. Abstract:BackgroundThis study aimed to compare the effect of virtual and traditional education on theoretical knowledge and reporting skills of dental students in radiographic interpretation of bony lesions of the jaw.MethodsThis experimental study evaluated 39 dental students who had not received any instruction regarding radiographic interpretation of bony lesions of the jaw. They were randomly divided into two groups of virtual (n = 20) and traditional education (n = 19) and matched in terms of their grade point average (GPA). The virtual group received a virtual learning package while the traditional group received traditional classroom instruction for 6 one-hour sessions. Similar contents were taught to both groups by the same mentor. All students participated in a theoretical test with multiple-choice questions and an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). Similar exams were also held 2 months later to assess knowledge retention. Data were analyzed using independent sample t-test and repeated measures ANOVA.ResultsThe mean scores of theoretical test (P P > 0.05) in the virtual education group (16.60 ± 0.91 and 15.13 ± 0.78) were higher than those in the traditional education group (14.89 ± 0.99 and 14.71 ± 0.92). In both methods of instruction, the mean scores of theoretical test and OSCE at 2 months were lower than the scores acquired immediately after instruction but this difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Type of education had a significant effect on the theoretical test score (P P = 0.072).ConclusionsVirtual learning was superior to traditional lecture-based method for enhancement of knowledge acquisition in radiographic interpretation of bony lesions of the jaw. However, to improve our students' reporting skills, we need to revise our virtual educational program so that the students have more opportunities to engage in reporting skills.

Interactive teaching environment for diagnostic radiography with real-time X-ray simulation and patient positioning

Abstract:Abstract Purpose Traditional undergraduate radiographer training mixes academic lectures and clinical practice. Our goal is to bridge the current disconnection between theory and practice in a safe environment, avoiding the risk of radiation for both practitioners and patients. To this end, this research proposes a new software to teach diagnostic radiography using real-time interactive X-ray simulation and patient positioning. Methods The proposed medical simulator is composed of three main modules. A fast and accurate character animation technique is in charge of simulating the patient positioning phase and adapts their internal anatomy accordingly. gVirtualXRay is an open-source X-ray simulation library and generates the corresponding radiographs in real time. Finally, the courseware allows going through all the diagnostic radiology steps from the patient positioning and the machine configuration to the final image enhancing. Results A face and content validation study has been conducted; 18 radiology professionals were recruited to evaluate our software using a questionnaire. The results show that our tool is realistic in many ways (72% of the participants agreed that the simulations are visually realistic), useful (67%) and suitable (78%) for teaching X-ray radiography. Conclusions The proposed tool allows simulating the most relevant steps of the projectional radiography procedure. The virtual patient posing system and X-ray simulation module execute at interactive rates. These features enable the lectures to show their students the results of good and bad practices in a classroom environment, avoiding radiation risk.

Implementation and analysis of clinically‐relevant anatomy imaging for first‐year dental students

Abstract:Objective Radiographic imaging interpretation is a central competency of the dental profession. Previous research has determined that radiographic interpretations vary across dentists. In addition, the efficacy of empirical learning within the realm of medical imaging analysis remains understudied. This project aimed to improve an existing anatomy curriculum as well as students' radiographic interpretation skills via implementation of medical radiographic case studies with scaffolded exercises. Methods Three medical imaging activities were developed by the authors and presented in the anatomy laboratory for 60 first‐year dental students. Each module included identical pre‐activity and post‐activity questionnaires, radiographic images with corresponding lesson plans, and open‐response questions on the activity's valuable and challenging components. Pre‐activity and post‐activity questionnaire scores were compared via a Wilcoxon signed rank test. Kruskal–Wallis tests were conducted to determine the impact of previous anatomy experience and previous medical imaging experience on student performance. Thematic analysis was applied to open response comments. Results A statistically significant improvement in questionnaire scores was observed in the first medical imaging activity. No significant change in scores was observed for the other two activities. Students valued the activities' interactive structure, review of course material, and application to the dental profession. Students reported challenges in radiographic image interpretation and lack of previous knowledge on course concepts. Conclusions While medical imaging activities failed to consistently improve student‐learning outcomes, they introduced skill development in radiographic analysis and increased student confidence. These findings suggest a need for additional research on experiential methodologies within medical imaging education.

Virtual Reality Simulation-Based Clinical Procedure Skills Training for Nursing College Students: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Abstract:Core nursing skills are emphasized in nursing education, given their vital role in nurses' competence; however, invasive nursing procedures like catheterization and enemas are infrequently performed in actual clinical practice, primarily being observed rather than executed. Virtual reality simulation training involves performing core nursing skills on virtual patients in a three-dimensional virtual reality environment, following the correct procedures. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of VR simulation on nursing students' confidence, proficiency, task engagement, and satisfaction. The study participants included 76 second-year nursing students, with 37 in the VR group and 39 in the control group. The VR group engaged in immersive VR (IVR) training sessions including enemas, nasogastric feeding, and nelaton catheterization. Conversely, the control group practiced these skills using mannequins. Assessments evaluated confidence, proficiency, learning satisfaction, and task engagement before and after the intervention. The average age of the study participants was 21.07 years, with 78.95% being female and 21.05% being male. The study findings revealed no significant differences between the VR and control groups regarding confidence (F = 3.878, p = 0.053), task engagement (F = 0.164, p = 0.687), and learning satisfaction (F = 0.668, p = 0.416). However, the VR group demonstrated significantly higher proficiency in the overall assessment of nasogastric feeding (F = 5.389, p = 0.023) and core components of nelaton catheterization (F = 4.046, p = 0.048). The IVR program emerged as an effective and valuable teaching tool, particularly well-suited for second-year nursing students, significantly enhancing proficiency.

Abstract:It is a requirement that medical students are educated in emergencies and feel well prepared for practice as a doctor, yet national surveys show that many students feel underprepared. Virtual reality (VR), combined with 360-degree filming, provides an immersive, realistic, and interactive simulation experience. Unlike conventional in-person simulation, it is scalable with reduced workforce demands. We sought to compare students' engagement and enjoyment of VR simulation to desktop computer-based simulation.

Abstract:Abstract Background Virtual reality (VR) simulation provides users with an immersive, 3D experience that can be used to allow surgical trainees to practice skills and operations in a safe yet realistic environment. The field of orthopaedics is yet to include VR in core teaching, despite its advantages as a teaching aid, particularly against current simulation tools. This study aims to conduct a systematic review to investigate the efficacy of VR in orthopaedic training, against current methods. Methods A systemic review of databases Medline, Embase and the Cochrane Library for randomized controlled trials focusing on VR training against conventional training in orthopaedic surgery was performed. Data synthesis was performed through narrative analysis due to the heterogeneous nature of the data. Results A total of 16 studies from 140 titles were identified, across 6 specialty areas. Four hundred and thirty-one participants were included. Control groups included VR, cadaver and benchtop simulators. Forty-seven outcomes were measured, focusing on skill and proficiency assessment. No outcomes focused on patient safety. Although significance between intervention and control was not always achieved, most studies found that the intervention outperformed the control. Conclusion VR provides a modern and immersive teaching tool that can develop skills and give confidence to trainees. This study demonstrates the potential for VR simulation as a training aid in orthopaedics and encourages its use alongside conventional teaching methods. However, long-term analysis of the results of VR training on surgical trainees has yet to be conducted. To provide conclusive justification for its inclusion in surgical training, this study recommends that future research follows trainees using VR into the operating room, to determine that VR teaches skills that are transferable onto actual surgeries, subsequently leading to better patient outcomes.
Collaborative 360° virtual reality training of medical students in clinical examinations

Abstract:Simulation-based training in computer-generated environments has always played an important role in clinical medical education. Recently, there has been a growing interest in using 360° videos of real-life situations for training in health professions. Several studies report positive results from using 360° Virtual Reality for individuals, yet there are currently no studies on collaborative 360° Virtual Reality training. In this paper, we evaluate how 360° Virtual Reality can support collaborative training in clinical medical education. The study population consisted of 14 medical students in semester 5 of their Bachelor's programme. The students were divided into three groups before watching and annotating a 360° video of an authentic learning situation inside a collaborative immersive virtual reality space. The original video shows a problem-based examination of the collateral and cruciate ligaments of the knee performed by students under the supervision of a professor. After training in collaborative 360° Virtual Reality, students then had to perform the same tests in a physical examination. The students' performance was subsequently evaluated by a professor with expertise in knee examinations. The results show that 12 out of 14 students received a score of 2 for one or more tests, thereby meeting the required learning objective. One student received a score of 1 and one student did not perform any of the tests. The students actively use the tools provided by the software and different communicative strategies when working collaboratively in 360° Virtual Reality, which enables them to perform the tests in the physical examination by transferring their constructed knowledge. The results indicate that our pedagogical design in collaborative immersive 360° Virtual Reality can become a relevant addition to face-to-face clinical medical training.

Abstract:Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal, Ahead of Print. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology hold potential across many disciplines in medicine to expand the delivery of education and healthcare. VR-AR applications in radiology, in particular, have gained prominence and have demonstrated advantages in many areas within the field. Recently, VR software has emerged to redesign the physical radiology workstation (ie, reading room) to expand the possibilities of diagnostic interpretation. Given the novelty of this technology, there is limited research investigating the potential applications of a simulated radiology workstation. In this review article, we explore VR-simulated reading room technology in its current form and illustrate the practical applications this technology will bring to future radiologists and learners. We also discuss the limitations and barriers to adopting this technology that must be overcome to truly understand its potential benefits. VR reading room technology offers great potential in radiology, but further research is needed to appreciate its benefits and identify areas for improvement. The findings and insights presented in this review contribute to the ongoing discourse on future technological advancements in radiology and healthcare, offering valuable recommendations for further research and practical implementation.
