Abstract:Objective To investigate the proportions and features of tumors,cysts and tumor-like lesions in the oral-maxillofacial region.Methods 9 056 cases of primary tumors,cysts and tumor-like lesions in the oral-maxillofacial region which were confirmed by pathological diagnosis(from January 1955 to December 2006 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery,Second Affiliated Hospital,School of Medicine,Zhejiang University) were retrospectively analyzed about their clinical pathological features,histological types,gender proportions and primary locations.Results There were 6 337 cases of tumors,2 363 cysts and 356 tumor-like lesions in the oral-maxillofacial region.Among the tumors,the benign tumor accounted 56.7%(3 596/6 337) while the malignant tumor took up 43.3%(2 747/6 337).Pleomorphic adenoma,hemangioma and ameloblastoma were the most common benign tumors.While the principle malignant tumor was carcinoma(86.2%,2 367/2 747),most of which were squamous cell carcinoma(50.0%,1 184/2 367),majorly in tongue,gingiva and cheek,with a gender ratio of 2.34∶1.Meanwhile,the most common benign and malignant salivary gland tumors were pleomorphic adenoma and adenocarcinoma,respectively,commonly sited in parotid gland,submandibular gland,palatine gland and parotid gland,palatine gland,submandibular gland,respectively.The dentigerous cyst(33.9%,408/1 202) and the sublingual gland cyst(41.1%,477/1 161) were the most common types of the odontogenic cysts and non-odontogenic cysts in the oral-maxillofacial region separately.The most frequent tumor-like lesion was epulis (54.8%,195/356).Conclusion Within this research,tumor is the most common lesion,with a number of begnin tumor more than malignant tumor,and the amount of male patients is larger than that of female patients with tumors,cysts or tumor-like lesions in the oral-maxillofacial region(261 words).

Abstract:Gingival fibromatosis is a rare disease, especially its syndromic form. Here, we review the literatures on gingival fibromatosis and briefly summarize some characters on clinical, etiological, genetic and histopathological aspects. We also present a rare case of gingival fibromatosis with multiple unusual findings in a 21-year-old man. And we differentiate it from some well-known syndromes including gingival fibromatosis. Maybe it implies a new syndrome within the spectrum of those including gingival fibromatosis.
Prevalence and Clinico-pathologic Profile of Biopsied Gingival Lesions from 2 Thai Dental Schools

Abstract:Background: Gingiva can be afflicted by several pathological entities apart from gingivitis and periodontitis. There have been limited number of studies on gingival lesions, especially from Thailand. Aim: To analyze the prevalence and distribution of biopsied gingival lesions from Chulalongkorn and Rangsit Dental Schools, Thailand. Material and methods: Biopsy records of the participating institutions from 1995 to 2020 were reviewed for gingival lesions. The demographic data, site of lesions and diagnoses were collected. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: From a total of 16,207 biopsies, 1,589 cases (10.2%) were diagnosed in the category of gingival lesions. The mean age ± SD of the patients was 42.3 ± 18.6 years with the highest prevalence being in the fourth decade of life (17.4%). A male-to-female ratio was 0.48:1. The most common location was the posterior mandible (27.4%). Regarding the type of gingival lesions, non-neoplastic lesions (88.5%) outnumbered neoplastic lesions (11.5%). The most common lesion was pyogenic granuloma, followed by irritation fibroma and peripheral ossifying fibroma. Among the neoplastic lesions, squamous cell carcinoma was the most prevalent lesion followed by papilloma and lymphoma. Conclusions: Gingival lesions mostly occur in the fourth decade of life and have a predilection for female patients. The majority of the lesions are located in the posterior mandible. Non-neoplastic lesion, especially the reactive subtype, is the most prevalent group and pyogenic granuloma is the most common gingival lesion. Data from this study represent biopsied gingival lesions from Thailand which may be different from those of other countries. Distribution of biopsied gingival lesions according to the proceedings from the 2017 World Workshop classification: A three-year retrospective study

Abstract:Background: The gingiva is a common site for neoplastic or non-neoplastic lesions. Neoplasms refer to progressive autonomous growth that can have either a benign or a malignant course. On the other hand, non-neoplastic lesions are mainly inflammatory, or occur as a reaction to some kind of irritation or lowgrade injury. Objectives: Assessing the frequency distribution of gingival lesions is important to optimize oral health care services. The present study retrospectively analyzed the frequency distribution of gingival lesions on the basis of the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions. The secondary objective was to compare this system with the 1999 International Workshop classification system. Material and methods: The hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained histopathological slides of the gingival lesions reported over the last 3 years (2018-2020) were retrieved from the archive of the Division of Oral Pathology and Microbiology at a tertiary care hospital in New Delhi, India. Correlating clinical, radiological and pathological details enabled the categorization of lesions according to the new classification system. Results: In total, 73 gingival lesions were analyzed. Among these, reactive processes were the most frequent (39.73%), followed by inflammatory and immune conditions and lesions (26.03%), malignant tumors (21.92%), benign epithelial lesions (5.48%), and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) (5.48%). Genetic/developmental disorders were the least frequent (1.37%). However, as per the 1999 American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) system, the majority of lesions belonged to a non-specified category. Conclusions: The frequency distribution of biopsied gingival lesions according to the 2017 World Workshop classification in comparison with the previous classification system showed that differences between the 2 systems could be attributed to heterogeneous terminology rather than to real geographical variations.

Abstract:Introduction: The oral cavity, the beginning of the digestive system, has diverse lesions affecting it other than Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC). Soft-tissue Tumours (STT) are uncommon lesions. Overlapping of the signs and symptoms in diverse conditions creates significant problems for reaching their definitive diagnosis. Histopathological Examination (HPE) plays a central role in giving their final diagnosis. Assessment of the clinical features, histopathology, along with Immunohistochemistry (IHC), helps in reaching an accurate diagnosis in these cases, which further aids in the proper management of the patient. Aim: To study the spectrum of oral cavity lesions and tumours with emphasis on STT. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Pathology and Otolaryngology, Dr. Ulhas Patil Medical College, Jalgaon, Maharashtra, India included the oral cavity lesion samples received over two years (from January 2021 to December 2022) in the histopathology section of a Medical College in Maharashtra, India. A total of 170 cases were included in the study. Complete clinical information including age, sex, anatomical location, clinical diagnosis, and histological subtypes were compiled. The HPE diagnosis were classified into four categories-Non neoplastic, Benign, Epithelial Proliferative lesions {including viral/Human Papillomavirus (HPV) related}/Intraepithelial neoplastic lesions/Precursor or Pre-malignant, and malignant with special emphasis on STTs found. The data was statistically analysed and the results were presented as percentages. Full details of the soft-tissue lesions were recorded, entered into an Excel sheet, and studied for the percentage-wise distribution of various recorded parameters. Results: A total of 170 cases were found. Male:female distribution was 2.78:1, and most patients were in the seventh decade, n=38 (22.35%). The most common lesions other than SCC, n=110 (64.71%) found were mucocele, chronic inflammatory lesion and wart. The Buccal Mucosa/Gingivo-buccal Sulcus (GBS) were the most commonly involved site, n=82 (48.24%). Malignant lesions were more common in the sixth and seventh decades, with a male preponderance of 2.71:1. The uncommon STTs found were-Benign: Haemangioma/pyogenic granuloma (n=2), a Schwanomma, and a Proliferative Fasciitis (PF); Malignant: two fibrosarcomas and a high-grade sarcoma. All three malignant STTs were found in males of the sixth decade involving the buccal mucosa. Conclusion: Among the variety of lesions found in the oral cavity, HPE facilitates the recognition of the STT, especially the malignant ones, aiding in proper management. Being an extremely uncommon entity at this site, the documentation of these findings is of utmost importance.

Abstract:Introduction: The oral mucosa serves as a protective barrier against trauma, pathogens and carcinogenic agents. It can be affected by a wide variety of lesions and conditions, some of which may be harmless or with serious complications. Identification and institution of proper treatment of these lesions are an important part of total oral health care. Knowledge of clinical characteristics of oral mucosal lesions such as morphology, location, and duration helps in proper diagnosis and in identifying the type of oral mucosal lesion. The present study was designed to analyze prevalence of oral mucosal lesions in elderly population. Materials and methods: A descriptive pro forma-based study was conducted among the elderly patients visiting the Saveetha Dental College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Elderly patients within the age 55–90 years were considered as subjects in this study. The pro forma contained basic details of patients such as name, age, sex, occupation, chief complaint, past medical and dental history, family history and personal habits (oral hygiene habits and oral habits). On intra oral examination the characteristic features of oral mucosal lesions were recorded. Result: Seventy five subjects participated in the study. In 75 subjects, there were 55 males and 20 females. The patients ranged from 55 to 90 years old and were categorised into four age groups: 55–60 years, 60–70 years, 70–80 years and 80–90 years. The most common lesions were oral submucous fibrosis (21.33%), smoker's palate (20%), leukoplakia (14.66%) and tobacco pouch keratosis (10.66%). Conclusion: The prevalence of oral habits related lesions in elderly population are more in Indian population because of more exposure to tobacco products in old age and the prevalence of non oral habits related lesions are because of vitamin, dietary deficiency and stress. Hence, proper support and care of aged individuals will help the dentist in proper diagnosis and treatment planning programs.
Prevalence and risk indicators of gingivitis and periodontitis in a multi-centre study in North Jordan: a cross sectional study

Abstract:Background: There are limited data about the epidemiology and risk factors/indicators of gingivitis, aggressive periodontitis (AgP) and chronic periodontitis (CP) in Jordan. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and risk indicators of gingivitis, AgP and CP. Methods: A sample of 595 subjects was randomly selected from subjects escorting out-patients attending a Medical Center, a Dental Teaching Hospital, and 2 private dental clinics. The socio-demographic variables, oral hygiene habits, income, smoking and Body Mass Index (BMI) were recorded. Full mouth periodontal examination was performed, and radiographs were taken for sites with probing depth > 3 mm. Results: About 76% had gingivitis, 2.2% had AgP and 5.5% had CP. Periodontitis was more frequent among males than females with a M: F ratio of 1.6:1 and the prevalence increased with age. Subjects who reported not using a tooth brush, smokers and subjects with BMI > 30 kg/m2 had significantly higher prevalence of periodontitis. The risk for periodontitis was greater among subjects who reported positive family history and subjects with ≤ 12 years of education. Conclusions: This is the first study to report on the prevalence of gingivitis, CP and AgP in North Jordanian. Age, low education, low frequency of tooth brushing and family history were significantly associated with increased risk of periodontitis.
Clinicopathological Analysis of 5146 Eyelid Tumours and Tumour-Like Lesions in an Eye Centre in South China, 2000–2018: a Retrospective Cohort Study

Abstract:Objectives To describe the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with eyelid tumours and tumour-like lesions in South China, investigate possible factors affecting tumour constitution.Design Retrospective cohort study.Setting All patients diagnosed with eyelid tumours were included from a high-volume tertiary eye care centre from South China which caring for over 2000 patients per day. All biopsied specimens were reviewed by two senior pathologists and were classified according to the fourth edition of the WHO Classification of Skin Tumours.Participant A total of 5146 cases of eyelid lesions were reviewed from 2000 to 2018, being classified by histogenesis and pathologic diagnosis, being compared with data from previous literature containing different races.Main outcome measures Age-specific and gender-specific incidence constitutions, time trends, tumour location, distribution in different age groups and relationship with Sociodmographic Index (SDI) were calculated.Results Benign tumours accounted for 85.08% (4378) of all cases, among which, nevus was most common (33.07%). Eight of top 10 benign lesions had higher occurrence in upper eyelids. The R² value of linear regression in patient annual number of benign lesions were 0.946 (p<0.01) for male and 0.914 (p<0.01) for female. More than 33.60% (1471/4378) were made up by patients younger than 40 years. The number of patients undergoing removal of benign lesions decreased with age. Among the malignant lesions, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) was most prevalent (48.70%), followed by sebaceous gland carcinoma (34.24%) and majority (81.8%) occurred in patients above 60 years.Conclusions Over the past 19 years, most eyelid tumours occurred at our centre were benign lesions. The number of patients presenting with benign lesions increased in both genders, especially among young females who were more likely to request surgeries. Among malignant lesions, BCC remains the most common type, appears a higher incidence in countries with higher SDI.

Abstract:Background. Oral cancer is one of ten most common causes of death, because of late diagnosis due to its similarity of clinical presentation with some of the benign lesions.The aim of this research is to determine five years’ prevalence of oral squamous cell carcinoma of the patients. Methods. A descriptive cross-sectional study was done.We used SPSS software to analyze data Result. In this study, 101 patients were included, the most patients were in the seventh decade, with chief complaint was oral ulcer (61%), also only 6% of patients had a history of malignancy in their family, 22% had poor oral health status. males had a higher incidence rate than females. Conclusion. Surprisingly tobacco use was markedly low in comparison to other studies. Practical Implications. Early diagnosis of oral cavity cancers leads to proper treatment and increases survival rate of patientr.
An Audit of Histopathological Pattern of Peripheral Giant Cell Granuloma - A Retrospective Study

Abstract:Introduction: Peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a type of reactive hyperplastic lesion in the oral cavity that develops due to local irritation or chronic trauma, originating from the periosteum or periodontal membrane. It primarily affects the alveolar mucosa of the posterior mandibular region and has a peak incidence in the age range of the fourth to sixth decades of life, with a 2:1 female predilection. The aim of the study was to analyse the histopathological pattern of peripheral giant cell granuloma. Materials and methods: This retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary care teaching hospital from 2018 to 2023 after obtaining the required institutional ethical board approval (SMC/UECM/2023/627/296). All the cases of maxillofacial lesions referred/reported to and which conformed to the set inclusion and exclusion criteria were included. Data were analysed by calculating the percentage of the variables. IBM SPSS version 20 software was used to analyse the descriptive data. Results: Out of 12 patients, four were males and eight were females. The age ranged from 20 to 60 years with an average age of 40 years. All the patients included in the study showed multinucleated giant cells and inflammatory cells, 83.3% showed fibrous stroma and 50% showed para-keratinisation and haemosiderin pigments. Discussion: PGCG, a reparative lesion, seems to occur mostly in the 40-60 years of life with female predilection and commonly seen histopathological features included multinuclear giant cells, inflammatory cells in all cases, 83.3% fibrous stroma and 50% both para-keratinisation and haemosiderin pigments.
Classification and identification of human papillomavirus based on its prevalence and development of cervical lesion among Iranian women

Abstract:Introduction: Cervical cancer is the most common female cancer in large areas of the developing world, and almost half of these cases (54%) arises in Asia, where cervical cancer is still threatening women’s health and survival, which makes it a considerable public problem. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most powerful human carcinogens. Today, it has been proven that all cervical cancers and primary precancerous lesions are caused by carcinogenic types of HPV infections. HPV genotyping can therefore evaluate the screening programs. Methods: Five hundred fifty women referring to the gynecological centers were subjected to Pap smear cell samples. The cytopathological diagnosis of obtained cervical samples was based on the Bethesda system. HPV genotyping was carried out using the INNO-LiPA HPV Genotyping Extra II Amp assay. Results: In a total of 244 HPV positive cases, single‐type HPV infection was observed in 49.6%, while multi‐type HPV infections (including ≥ 2 types) were found in 45.5% of cases. Among the 110 cases with abnormal cytology results, going-over analyses led to the identification of atypical squamous cell of unknown significance (ASCUS) in 73 cases, low‐grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL) in 24 cases, and high‐grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) in 12 cases. In these groups, the infection rate of high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) was 89%, 82%, and 100%, respectively. Conclusion: In this study, the total population of women suffering from different cervical lesions and malignancy was found to be infected with various HPV genotypes. High prevalence of HPV- 53 and HPV- 16 detected among participants with normal cytology can be considered as a tip-off development of cervical cancer among Iranian women.

Socio-demographic determinants as predictors of oral hygiene status and gingivitis in schoolchildren aged 7-12 years old: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Gingivitis and poor oral hygiene status are the most prevalent oral diseases among primary school students. Poor oral hygiene status, gingivitis and socio-demographic determinants have been shown to be associated with periodontal diseases. There is limited information on the gingivitis and oral hygiene status among Iranian children. In the present study, the status of gingivitis, oral hygiene status, and their association with socio-demographic determinants among schoolchildren aged 7-12 years old in Hamadan were investigated.METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 988 primary school students aged 7-12 years old were selected. The oral hygiene status was measured through Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S) and Community Periodontal Index (CPI) was used to evaluate gingival bleeding and calculus. CPI was measured using a standardized protocol to investigate gum bleeding and calculus. The oral hygiene was classified as good, fair or poor based on calculus and debris measurements. Age, gender, educational level, occupation and residence district of parents, dental pain experience in the last year and whether parents supervised their children while brushing were assessed by the questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis.RESULTS: The oral hygiene status was good in 644 students (65.20%), fair in 341 (34.50%) and poor in three (0.30%). Moreover, the results of CPI depicted that 639 students (64.07%) had healthy periodontium, 320 (32.40%) had periodontal bleeding and 29 (2.9%) were with calculus. Higher percentage of the boys in the age group of 12 years old had periodontal bleeding and fewer good oral hygiene. The results of CPI and OHI-S scores depicted that more than half of the primary school students had healthy gums and periodontium (64.1%) and good oral hygiene status (65.2%). There were significant statistical associations between age and residence district with calculus measured by the CPI, also between gender, age, residence district, and mother's occupation with the gingival bleeding measured by the CPI. Furthermore, age and mother's occupation were significantly associated with OHI-S index.CONCLUSIONS: In general, the periodontal health status is poorer in students attending suburban schools compared to those in urban schools in Hamadan. Since there are significant associations between gender, school districts and mother's occupation with oral hygiene index among schoolchildren in primary schools, considering them in schools' oral health program design might be useful.

Bacteriol. 84:1181–1186. 1962.—The nature of the factors in yeast autolysate essential for the oxidation of glycerol by Streptococcus faecalis F24 was examined. Two factors appear to be involved in the oxidation of glycerol. One factor was shown to be an inducer of the enzyme system required for glycerol oxidation; the other was shown to be α-lipoic acid. Minute quantities of glucose will “spark” growth of S. faecalis in a medium containing glycerol and acetate as carbon sources, probably by supplying sufficient energy for induction of the glycerol-oxidation system.

Abstract:Background: Granulomatous dermatoses, particularly on facial skin, pose a diagnostic challenge, as similar histologic patterns can be produced by different causes. Aim: To evaluate the correlation between clinical suspicion and histopathological findings in various facial granulomatous dermatoses. Materials and methods: This retrospective, cross-sectional study included all patients with the histopathological diagnosis of facial granulomatous dermatoses from the years 2016 to 2021 in an academic hospital. Demographic, clinical, and histopathologic features were reviewed and analyzed. Results: In this study, 150 histopathological records with the diagnosis of facial granulomatous dermatoses from the years 2016 to 2021 were reviewed. The most common clinical diagnosis was rosacea 34 (23.6%), followed by sarcoidosis 27 (18.8%), leishmaniasis 15 (10.4%), and granulomatous rosacea 10 (6.9%). The frequency of clinical diagnosis of rosacea (70.6), sarcoidosis (66.7), foreign body G (62.5), TB (75), pseudolymphoma (75), acne agminata (66.7), and granulomatous rosacea (70) in female patients was higher than that in males (P value = 0.03). The effect of age on the type of both clinical and histopathological diagnosis was statistically significant (P value = 0.0001 and 0.004, respectively). Conclusion: Our study contributed significantly to the understanding of the clinicopathological aspects of facial granulomatous dermatoses and advocated for a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of these complex skin conditions.

Abstract:Introduction : Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignancy of the oral cavity in which there is a poor prognosis. Viruses, including Human papillomavirus (HPV), play an important role in the etiology of this cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of HPV in patients with oral cancer in Shiraz. Method : In this case-control study, 100 patients with oral cancer as the case group and 100 healthy individuals as the control group were included in the study after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and after receiving demographic information, Nested-PCR for HPV detection was performed on their tissue samples. Finally, after entering the data into SPSS software, the data were statistically analyzed. Results : A total of 200 patients including 100 patients and 100 healthy individuals were examined. Samples of patients from different parts of the mouth but samples of healthy individuals were taken from the tonsils. The mean age of the subjects was 53/66 ± 1.38 years. The minimum and maximum ages of the subjects were 28 and 90 years, respectively. In this study, 70 (34%) of the subjects were female and 130 (65%) were male. 2 out of 100 patients in the control group and 14 out of 100 patients in the case group were infected with HPV virus in oral samples. This difference was statistically significant ( p value = 0.008). In HPV-positive people, most cases of HPV were related to the tongue and then the larynx. The relationship between sampling site and HPV infection was statistically significant ( p = 0.004). The association between sampling site and HPV infection in people with oral cancer was also significant. Conclusion : The results of this study showed that HPV plays a direct role in development of oral cancer in individual however, factors such as age and gender also involved. The study also found that people with oral HPV were at higher risk for developing tongue cancer.

Assessment of Gingival Phenotype in Type 2 Diabetic Patients in Sulaimani City

Abstract:Objective: To determine the prevalence of gingival phenotype (GP) in type 2 diabetic patients in Sulaimani city and its relation with the severity of periodontal diseases.Methods: A sample of 150 individuals with type 2 diabetes were selected with an age range of 40-65. Probe transparency method involving a colorvue biotype periodontal probe was used to assess GP through the mid-labial gingival margin on the maxillary and mandibular central, lateral incisors, and canines. Clinical periodontal parameters including keratinized gingival width (KGW), probing pocket depth (PPD), plaque index (PI), bleeding index (BI), and clinical attachment loss (CAL) were recorded with a Williams periodontal probe. In addition, standardized HBA1C was assessed for each participant.Results: The majority of patients in this study had thin gingiva (42.7%), followed by medium, thick, and very thick gingiva (38%, 14.7%, and 4.7%, respectively). The association between gingival thickness and severity of periodontal disease (gingivitis, periodontitis stage 1, stage 2, stage 3, and stage 4) was non-significant. However, significant differences were detected between the mean of KGW and the severity of periodontal disease. Furthermore, there was no statistically significant association with gingival thickness according to sex. Conclusions: Thin gingiva was the most common gingival phenotype among type 2 diabetes patients in Sulaimani city, followed by medium gingiva, while thick and very thick gingiva were less common. Furthermore, there was no statistically significant association between gingival phenotype and the severity of the periodontal diseases.
Successful Management of an Emerging Distinct Gingival Lesion With a New Histopathological Identity

Abstract:Gingival fibroma is a pathological condition that can manifest in pediatric and adult patients, often presenting diagnostic challenges due to shared histopathological characteristics among various lesions. It has been reported as a novel category with distinct histopathological features with new diagnostic criteria. A 40-year-old Saudi female patient with no significant medical history reported a 4×3 cm pedunculated, non-tender, firm, red gingival growth adjacent to the remaining root of tooth number 27 in the maxillary left side. Radiographic assessment yielded remarkable findings. An excisional biopsy was performed, and histopathology analysis confirmed the lesion to be a gingival fibroma. This case marks the first reported instance of gingival fibroma in Saudi Arabia. The recognition of such distinctive histopathological features contributes to improved diagnostic accuracy and highlights the need for vigilance in identifying emerging pathological entities within the gingival overgrowths. The recognition of gingival fibroma as a unique pathological entity is clinically significant, resolving diagnostic challenges in gingival growth cases. Specific diagnostic criteria enable accurate differentiation from similar lesions. The advancement improves patient care and refines the understanding of gingival overgrowth pathogenesis.
