Abstract:We present some unique challenges in cognitive radio ad-hoc networks (CRAHNs) that are not present in conventional single-channel or multi-channel wireless ad-hoc networks. We first briefly survey these challenges and their potential impact on the design of efficient algorithms for several fundamental problems in CRAHNs. Then, we describe our recent contributions to the capacity maximization problem [29] and the connectivity problem [32]. The capacity maximization problem is to maximize the overall throughput utility among multiple unicast sessions; the connectivity problem is to find a connected subgraph from the given cognitive radio network where each secondary node is equipped with multiple radios. By assuming the physical interference model and asynchronous communications, we reformulate the above two problems where the capacity maximization problem is to find the maximum number of simultaneously transmitting links in secondary networks, and the connectivity problem is to construct a spanning tree over secondary networks using the fewest timeslots. We discuss the challenging issues for designing distributed approximation algorithms and give a preliminary framework for solving these two problems.

Abstract:Networking 2006 was organized by the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and it was the fifth event in a series of International Conferences on Networking sponsored by the IFIP Technical Committee on Communication Systems (TC 6). Previous events were held in Paris (France) in 2000, Pisa (Italy) in 2002, Athens (Greece) in 2004, and Waterloo (Canada) in 2005. Networking 2006 brought together active and proficient members of the networking community, from both academia and industry, thus contributing to scientific, strategic, and practical advances in the broad and fast-evolving field of communications. The conference comprised highly technical sessions organized thematically, keynote talks, tutorials offered by experts, as well as workshops and panel discussions on topical themes. Plenary sessions with keynote talks opened the daily sessions, which covered Networking Technologies, Services and Protocols, Performance of Computer and Communication Networks, and Mobile and Wireless Communications Systems. The Networking 2006 call for papers attracted 440 submissions from 44 different countries in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. These were subject to thorough review work by the Program Committee members and additional reviewers. The selection process was finalized in a Technical Program Committee meeting held in Lisbon on January 23, 2006.

Abstract:The Second International Workshop on Programming Language Approaches to Concurrency and Communication-cEntric Software (PLACES) was co-located with ETAPS 2009 in the city of York, England. The workshop took place on Sunday 22nd March 2009. The workshop focused on the challenges raised by the changing landscape of computer software. Traditionally, most software was written for a single computer with one CPU. However applications on the web today are built using numerous interacting services deployed on across many machines; soon off-the-shelf CPUs will host thousands of cores, and sensor networks will be composed from a large number of processing units. Many normal applications will soon need to make effective use of thousands of computing nodes. At some level of granularity, computation in such systems will be inherently concurrent and communication-centred. The development of effective programming methodologies for the coming computing paradigm demands exploration and understanding of a wide variety of ideas and techniques. This workshop offered a forum where researchers from different fields could exchange new ideas on one of the central challenges for programming in the near future, the development of programming methodologies and infrastructures where concurrency and distribution are the norm rather than a marginal concern.

Abstract:Parallel and distributed computing offer the promise to deliver the computing power necessary to solve many important problems whose requirements exceed the capabilities of the most powerful existing computers. Aiming to fulfill this promise, recent years have seen a flurry of activity in the arena of parallel and distributed computing which evolved into novel and robust computing models. These models reflect advances in computational devices and environments such as optical interconnects, programmable logic arrays, networks of workstations, radio communications, mobile computing, DNA computing, quantum computing, sensor networks, etc. In addition, practical experience with both parallel computers and distributed data communication networks has brought about an understanding of their potential and limitations which, in turn, have fostered the development of sophisticated algorithms. It is very encouraging see that the advent of these models, combined with the availability of efficient algorithms, has led to significant advances in the resolution of various difficult problems of practical interest.

Abstract:The one-day workshop, held prior to the "ZIF Workshop on Information Theory and Related Fields", provided an excellent opportunity for in-depth discussions on several topics within the field of post-Shannon theory. The agenda covered deterministic and randomized identification, focusing on various methods and algorithms for identifying data or signals deterministically and through randomized processes. It explored the theoretical foundations and practical applications of these techniques. The session on resources for increasing identification capacity examined the different resources and strategies that can be utilized to boost the capacity for identifying information. This included discussions on both hardware and software solutions, as well as innovative approaches to resource allocation and optimization. Participants delved into common randomness generation, essential for various cryptographic protocols and communication systems. The session highlighted recent advancements and practical implementations of common randomness in secure communications. The workshop concluded with a detailed look at the development and practical deployment of identification codes. Experts shared insights on code construction techniques, implementation challenges, and real-world applications in various communication systems. We extend our thanks to the esteemed speakers for their valuable contributions: Caspar von Lengerke, Wafa Labidi, Ilya Vorobyev, Johannes Rosenberger, Jonathan Huffmann, and Pau Colomer. Their presentations and insights significantly enriched the workshop. Additionally, we are grateful to all the participants whose active engagement, constructive comments, and stimulating discussions made the event a success. Abstract:With the blessing of information technology, we are living in an increasingly networked world. People, information and other entities are connected via World Wide Web, email networks, instant messaging networks, mobile communication networks, online social networks, etc. These online networks grow fast and possess huge amount of recorded information, which presents great opportunities in understanding the science of these networks, and in developing new applications from these networks and for these networks. The increasingly networked society has fundamentally changed our way of thinking, individual behaviors and social activities. It is foreseen that the public health relating to epidemic diseases is greatly impacted by this emerging connectivity as they are by nature mediated by direct or indirect human interactions and mobility. However, new challenges have to be met --- the networks are huge and information is noisy, and they demand new methodologies in accessing and analyzing these networks, and in developing theories and applications for the networks. To meet with these challenges, researchers from a wide range of academic fields, including theory and algorithms, data mining and machine learning, computer systems and networks, statistical physics and complex systems, sociology, social psychology, economics and managerial science, etc. are all actively studying various aspects concerning social and information networks. However, we lack the proper opportunities for people from these diverse backgrounds to directly interact with each other. The diversity of approaches and methodologies to study various social networks has raised the need for an interdisciplinary effort to create the required expertise to address the fundamental open questions in this field. This workshop is intended to present such an opportunity and serve as a forum to bring together people from various fields to exchange their latest research results and to sparkle new ideas and directions to properly understand these networks. It will be held on August 12, 2012, in conjunction with ACM KDD 2012, August 12-16, Beijing, China.

Abstract:Hybrid circuit and packet switching for data center networking (DCN) has received considerable research attention recently. A hybrid-switched DCN employs a much faster circuit switch that is reconfigurable with a nontrivial cost, and a much slower packet switch that is reconfigurable with no cost, to interconnect its racks of servers. The research problem is, given a traffic demand matrix (between the racks), how to compute a good circuit switch configuration schedule so that the vast majority of the traffic demand is removed by the circuit switch, leaving a remaining demand matrix that contains only small elements for the packet switch to handle. In this paper, we propose two new hybrid switch scheduling algorithms under two different scheduling constraints. Our first algorithm, called 2-hop Eclipse, strikes a much better tradeoff between the resulting performance (of the hybrid switch) and the computational complexity (of the algorithm) than the state of the art solution Eclipse/Eclipse++. Our second algorithm, called BFF (best first fit), is the first hybrid switching solution that exploits the potential partial reconfiguration capability of the circuit switch for performance gains.

Abstract:We present an overview of the recent progress of applying computational geometry techniques to solve some questions, such as topology construction and broadcasting, in wireless ad hoc networks. Treating each wireless device as a node in a two-dimensional plane, we model the wireless networks by unit disk graphs in which two nodes are connected if their Euclidean distance is no more than one. We first summarize the current status of constructing sparse spanners for unit disk graphs with various combinations of the following properties: bounded stretch factor, bounded node degree, planar, and bounded total edges weight (compared with the minimum spanning tree). Instead of constructing subgraphs by removing links, we then review the algorithms for constructing a sparse backbone (connected dominating set), that is, subgraph from the subset of nodes. We then review some efficient methods for broadcasting and multicasting with theoretic guaranteed performance. Copyright (C) 2003 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:As new networking paradigms emerge for different networking applications, e.g., cyber-physical systems, and different services are handled under a converged data link technology, e.g., Ethernet, certain applications with mission critical traffic cannot coexist on the same physical networking infrastructure using traditional Ethernet packet-switched networking protocols. The IEEE 802.1Q Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) task group is developing protocol standards to provide deterministic properties on Ethernet based packet-switched networks. In particular, the IEEE 802.1Qcc, centralized management and control, and the IEEE 802.1Qbv, Time-Aware Shaper, can be used to manage and control scheduled traffic streams with periodic properties along with best-effort traffic on the same network infrastructure. In this paper, we investigate the effects of using the IEEE 802.1Qcc management protocol to accurately and precisely configure TAS enabled switches (with transmission windows governed by gate control lists (GCLs) with gate control entries (GCEs)) ensuring ultra-low latency, zero packet loss, and minimal jitter for scheduled TSN traffic. We examine both a centralized network/distributed user model (hybrid model) and a fully-distributed (decentralized) 802.1Qcc model on a typical industrial control network with the goal of maximizing scheduled traffic streams.

Abstract:The problem of efficient traffic balancing in a data network environment is considered in relation to Network Powered by Computing (NPC)—a new generation of computational infrastructure, where computational resources and data transmission resources form a network—"Network is a Computer". This problem requires making load balancing decisions in a rapidly changing environment without knowledge all the traffic parameters. For this reason this paper considers multi-agent reinforcement learning approach (MARL) and introduces a novel approach: multi-agent reinforcement learning with hashing (MAROH). This approach is evaluated compared to standard load balancing algorithms: ECMP and UCMP, which shows improved effectiveness of the load balancing.

Abstract:The first ACM international workshop on big network analytics is held in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA on October 24, 2016 and co-located with the ACM 25th Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (CIKM). The main objective of the workshop is to provide a forum for presenting the most recent advances in mining big networks to unearth rich knowledge. It is related to information retrieval, Web mining, social network analysis, and computational advertising. The anticipated outcome includes a fruitful discussion about the emerging challenges in this field, the development of novel theories for mining big networks, and motivating the interesting applications. The broader anticipated outcome includes: fostering future research directions, publishing high quality papers, attracting new researchers to this field, and concrete solutions to the existing problems.

Abstract:Network decompositions, as introduced by Awerbuch, Luby, Goldberg, and Plotkin [FOCS'89], are one of the key algorithmic tools in distributed graph algorithms. We present an improved deterministic distributed algorithm for constructing network decompositions of power graphs using small messages, which improves upon the algorithm of Ghaffari and Kuhn [DISC'18]. In addition, we provide a randomized distributed network decomposition algorithm, based on our deterministic algorithm, with failure probability exponentially small in the input size that works with small messages as well. Compared to the previous algorithm of Elkin and Neiman [PODC'16], our algorithm achieves a better success probability at the expense of its round complexity, while giving a network decomposition of the same quality. As a consequence of the randomized algorithm for network decomposition, we get a faster randomized algorithm for computing a Maximal Independent Set, improving on a result of Ghaffari [SODA'19]. Other implications of our improved deterministic network decomposition algorithm are: a faster deterministic distributed algorithms for constructing spanners and approximations of distributed set cover, improving results of Ghaffari, and Kuhn [DISC'18] and Deurer, Kuhn, and Maus [PODC'19]; and faster a deterministic distributed algorithm for constructing neighborhood covers, resolving an open question of Elkin [SODA'04].
