Abstract:AIM: To investigate the susceptibility in vitro of domestic meropenem to main f33-lactamase producing gram-negative bacilli. METHODS: The genotypes of the extended spectrum f33-lactamases (ESBLs) and AmpC (3-lactamases in Escherichia coli,Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter cloaca were delected by the cloning and sequencing of the polymerase chain reaction products and phenotype isolations.Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 149 isolates of gram-negative bacilli to imipenem, piperacillin/tazobactam,cefopera-zone/sulbactam and domestic or imported meropenem were determined by agar dilution or Etesl method. RESULTS: The CTX-M gene was the main genotype in Escherichia coli and Klebsiellu pneumoniae ,reaching the positive rate of 92 %. None of Escherichia coli,Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterob acter cloac isolates were found resistant to meropenem and imipenem. The susceptible rates of Acinetobacter baumatmii to meropenem and imipenem were the same as 93 %,and those of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to meropenem and imipenem were 83 % and 77 %, respectively. CONCLUSION: Domesatic meropenem has strong antimicrobial activity against gram-negative bacilli,wiht no difference to the imported.

Abstract:The Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction (JHR) observed after antibiotic treatment of relapsing fever caused by Borrelia recurrentis is associated with the systemic appearance of cytokines. The decrease of cytokine production and block of JHR was attempted by administering pentoxifylline prior to antibiotic treatment. Fifteen patients with confirmed relapsing fever were infused intravenously with pentoxifylline 90 min before intramuscular injection of penicillin; 4 patients were not treated with pentoxifylline. All patients developed JHR to varying degrees. Treatment with pentoxifylline failed to prevent fever, increase in pulse, respiration, or blood pressure, or decrease in white blood cell count. No reduction of circulating levels of tumor necrosis factor, interleukin 6, or interleukin-8 was observed with pentoxifylline treatment. Pentoxifylline did not prevent clearance of the B. recurrentis spirochetes. Thus, pentoxifylline treatment of patients with relapsing fever fails to prevent or diminish JHR or the associated cytokine release observed after appropriate antibiotic treatment.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) can adsorb antibiotics to form complex pollutants, which seriously threatens the health of freshwater ecosystems. Few studies have examined the combined pollution characteristics of microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics in restored freshwater ecosystems and their effects on the growth traits of the aquatic primary producers. We studied both the ecotoxicological effects of polyethylene (PE) MPs and the antibiotics sulfanilamide (sulfa, SA) on the structural (diversity etc.,) and functional (nutrient cycling etc.,) properties of water-plant-sediment ecosystems. The synergistic toxic effects of PE and SA resulted in a reduction in the chlorophyll content and chloroplast fluorescence. Meanwhile, PE and SA single/combined pollution stress inhibits the radial oxygen loss in roots, and activates the antioxidant defense system in leaves. The change in the growth response characteristics of Vallisneria natans (V. natans) under oxidative stress induced by single/combined pollution showed a dosage effect. The microbial compositions of the overlying water and sediment were significantly changed by the pollution exposure, as evidenced by the increased microbial diversity and altered microbial taxa distribution. An increase in the total concentrations of sulfa in the overlying water was accompanied by an increase in the relative abundances of resistance genes. PE-MPs significantly affected the removal of total nitrogen and antibiotics from the overlying water. The interaction between PE and SA affects ammonia and nitrite nitrogen exchange in water-sediment systems. Thus, this study investigated the effects of combined MP and antibiotics pollution on the growth state, metabolic function, microbial community structure and microbial diversity of the freshwater ecosystems. The mechanism underlying of the combined polyethylene-sulfanilamide (PE-SA) effect on the V. natans was revealed. In addition, the correlation between different environmental factors was analyzed, and a structural equation model was constructed. This study provides primary data for evaluating the ecological and environmental effects of combined PE-SA pollution and its possible risks. Moreover, it provides a reference index for the study of ecological wetland environments and phytoremediation.

Abstract:Navicula sp., a type of benthic diatom, plays a crucial role in the carbon cycle as a widely distributed algae in water bodies, making it an essential primary producer in the context of global carbon neutrality. However, using erythromycin (ERY) and levofloxacin (LEV) in medicine, livestock, and aquaculture has introduced a new class of pollutants known as antibiotic pollutants, which pose potential threats to human and animal health. This study aimed to investigate the toxic effects of ERY and LEV, individually or in combination, on the growth, antioxidant system, chlorophyll synthesis, and various cell osmotic pressure indexes (such as soluble protein, proline, and betaine) of Navicula sp. The results indicated that ERY (1 mg/L), LEV (320 mg/L), and their combined effects could inhibit the growth of Navicula sp. Interestingly, the combination of these two drugs exhibited a time-dependent effect on the chlorophyll synthesis of Navicula sp., with ERY inhibiting the process while LEV promoted it. Furthermore, after 96 h of exposure to the drugs, the activities of GSH-Px, POD, CAT, and the contents of MDA, proline, and betaine increased. Conversely, the actions of GST and the contents of GSH and soluble protein decreased in the ERY group. In the LEV group, the activities of POD and CAT and the contents of GSH, MDA, proline, and betaine increased, while the contents of soluble protein decreased. Conversely, the mixed group exhibited increased POD activity and contents of GSH, MDA, proline, betaine, and soluble protein. These findings suggest that antibiotics found in pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) can harm primary marine benthic eukaryotes. The findings from the research on the possible hazards linked to antibiotic medications in aquatic ecosystems offer valuable knowledge for ensuring the safe application of these drugs in environmental contexts.

Abstract:Antibiotic residues have been commonly detected worldwide in freshwater, estuarine, and marine ecosystems. The review summarizes the up-to-date information about the toxic effects of over 60 antibiotics on nontarget autotrophic microorganisms with a particular focus on marine microalgae. A comprehensive overview of the available reports led to the identification of significant knowledge gaps. The data on just one species of freshwater green algae (Raphidocelis subcapitata) constitute 60% of the total information on the toxicity of antibiotics, while data on marine species account for less than 14% of the reports. Moreover, there is a clear knowledge gap regarding the chronic effects of antibiotic exposure (only 9% of studies represent exposition time values longer than 7 days). The review summarizes the information on different physiological endpoints, including processes involved in photosynthesis, photoprotective and antioxidant mechanisms. Currently, the hazard assessment is mostly based on the results of the evaluation of individual chemicals and acute toxicity tests of freshwater organisms. Future research trends should involve chronic effect studies incorporating sensitive endpoints with the application of environmentally relevant concentrations, as well as studies on the mixture effects and combined environmental factors influencing toxicity.
Metabolomic and transcriptomic investigation of the mechanism involved in enantioselective toxicity of imazamox in Lemna minor

Abstract:Imazamox (IM) is a chiral pesticide that has been widely used in agriculture. Currently, few studies have investigated the toxicity mechanisms of imazamox to aquatic macrophyte from the enantiomer level. In this study, the enantioselective effects of IM on the toxicity and physiological and biochemical system of aquatic macrophyte Lemna minor were systematically investigated. Metabolomic and transcriptomic for Lemna minor were used to identify potential mechanisms of toxicity. 7 d EC<sub>50</sub>s for racemic-, R-, and S-IM were 0.036, 0.035, and 0.203 mg/L, respectively, showing enantioselective toxicity. In addition, IM caused Lemna minor lipid peroxidation and antioxidant damage, and inhibited the activities of the target enzymes. Metabolomic and transcriptomic data indicated that R-IM interferenced differentially expressed genes and metabolites of Lemna minor which were enriched in carbon fixation during photosynthesis, glutathione metabolic pathway, pentose phosphate pathway, zeatin biosynthesis, and porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism. S-IM affected phenylalanine metabolism, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, zeatin biosynthesis and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. Racemic-IM influenced carbon fixation during operation, glutathione metabolic pathway, zeatin biosynthesis and pentose phosphate pathway. The results provide new insights into the enantioselective toxicity mechanisms of IM to Lemna minor, and lay the foundation for conducting environmental risk assessments.

Abstract:The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process is regarded as a promising approach to treat antibiotic-containing wastewater. Therefore, it is urgent to elucidate the effects of various antibiotics on the anammox process. Moreover, the mechanism of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) as protective barriers to relieve antibiotic stress remain unclear. Therefore, the single and combined effects of erythromycin (ETC) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ), and interactions between EPS and antibiotics were investigated in this study. Based on a 228-day continuous flow experiment, high concentrations of ETC and SMZ had significant inhibitory effects on the nitrogen removal performance of the anammox process, with the abundances of corresponding antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) increasing. In addition, the combined inhibitory effect of the two antibiotics on the anammox process was more significant and longer-lasting than that of the single. However, the anammox process was able to quickly recover from deterioration. The tolerance of anammox granules to the stress of low-concentration antibiotics was probably attributed to the increase in ARGs and secretion of EPS. Molecular docking simulation results showed that proteins in EPS could directly bind with SMZ and ETC at the sites of GLU-307, HYS-191, ASP-318 and THR-32, respectively. These findings improved our understanding of various antibiotic effects on the anammox process and the interaction mechanism between antibiotics and proteins in EPS.
From bacteria to fish: ecotoxicological insights into sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim

Abstract:Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TRIM) are two of the most used antibiotics in the last 50 years, to prevent and treat bacterial infections; however, the available literature about toxicity to non-target organisms is quite discrepant and incomplete. This study aims to assess the SMX and TRIM ecotoxicological effects in standard species: Aliivibrio fischeri (bioluminescence inhibition), Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 (growth inhibition), Lemna minor (growth inhibition and biochemical biomarkers), Daphnia magna (immobilization/mortality, life history traits, and biochemical biomarkers), and Danio rerio (survival, hatching, abnormalities, and biochemical biomarkers). The species tested showed different acute sensitivities to SMX (A. fischeri < D. magna < E. coli < L. minor) and TRIM (L. minor < A. fischeri < D. magna < E. coli). Overall, TRIM reveals less toxicity than SMX, except for E. coli (Ecotoxicological approach based on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing - EcoAST procedure). Both antibiotics affect individually (e.g., growth and survival) and sub-individually (e.g., antioxidant defenses) L. minor, D. magna, and D. rerio. This study allowed us to generate relevant data and fill gaps in the literature regarding the effects of SMX and TRIM in aquatic organisms. The here-obtained results can be used to (i) complete and re-evaluate the Safety Data Sheet to improve the assessment of environmental safety and management of national and international entities; (ii) clarify the environmental risks of these antibiotics in aquatic ecosystems reinforcing the inclusion in the 4th Watch List of priority substances to be monitored in whole inland waters by the Water Framework Directive; and (iii) combat the development of antimicrobial resistance, as well as supporting the definition of environmental measurements in the context of European One Health Action Plan. However, it is essential to continue studying these antibiotics to better understand their toxicity at ecologically relevant concentrations and their long-term effects under different climatic change scenarios.

This paper presents data which confirms :he leakage current prediction of the CC RAM cell. Leak,ige current data at 70°C shows the CC RAM cell to have a le3kage current density of about 40 nA/cm2, corresponding to 0.5 nA/cm2 at room temperature. This is 3-8 times lojver than that of the one-transistor cells that are used in .he dynamic memories today. Leakage current measurements on the CC RAM cell ,as a function of ambient temperature and storage region a-ea have allowed us to experimentally identify a contribution to leakage from around the periphery of the cell’ in addition to the expected contribution from the bulk depletion region and surface generation under the storage gate itself. A descrilotion of these experiments and a model for mechanisms wh ch contribute to the leakage will be discussed. These results are important to MOS dynamic memories in that he CC RAM cell offers a significant increase I,n refresh time. This refresh time advantage coupled with Ihe simple cell structure makes the CC RAM cell very attractwe for very large scale dynamic MOS memories.
Green solutions for antibiotic pollution: Assessing the phytoremediation potential of aquatic macrophytes in wastewater treatment plants

Abstract:We compared the ability of one emergent (Sagittaria montevidensis), two floating (Salvinia minima and Lemna gibba), and one heterophyllous species (Myriophyllum aquaticum) to simultaneously remove sulfamethoxazole, sulfadiazine, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, levofloxacin, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, doxycycline, azithromycin, amoxicillin, and meropenem from wastewater in a mesocosm-scale constructed wetland over 28 days. Antibiotic concentrations in plants and effluent were analyzed using an LC-MS/MS to assess the removal rates and phytoremediation capacities. M. aquaticum did not effectively mitigate contamination due to poor tolerance and survival in effluent conditions. S. minima and L. gibba demonstrated superior efficiency, reducing the antibiotic concentrations to undetectable levels within 14 days, while S. montevidensis achieved this result by day 28. Floating macrophytes emerge as the preferable choice for remediation of antibiotics compared to emergent and heterophyllous species. Antibiotics were detected in plant tissues at concentrations ranging from 0.32 to 29.32 ng g-1 fresh weight, highlighting macrophytes' ability to uptake and accumulate these contaminants. Conversely, non-planted systems exhibited a maximum removal rate of 65%, underscoring the persistence of these molecules in natural environments, even after the entire experimental period. Additionally, macrophytes improved effluent quality regardless of species by reducing total soluble solids and phosphate concentrations and mitigating ecotoxicological effects. This study underscores the potential of using macrophytes in wastewater treatment plants to enhance overall efficiency and prevent environmental contamination by antibiotics, thereby mitigating the harmful impact on biota and antibiotic resistance. Selecting appropriate plant species is crucial for successful phytoremediation in constructed wetlands, and actual implementation is essential to validate their effectiveness and practical applicability.
Effects of sulfamonomethoxine and trimethoprim co-exposures at different environmentally relevant concentrations on microalgal growth and nutrient assimilation

Abstract:In aquaculture around the world, sulfamonomethoxine (SMM), a long-acting antibiotic that harms microalgae, is widely employed in combination with trimethoprim (TMP), a synergist. However, their combined toxicity to microalgae under long-term exposures at environmentally relevant concentrations remains poorly understood. Therefore, we studied the effects of SMM single-exposures and co-exposures (SMM:TMP=5:1) at concentrations of 5 μg/L and 500 μg/L on Chlorella pyrenoidosa within one aquacultural drainage cycle (15 days). Photosynthetic activity and N assimilating enzyme activities were employed to evaluate microalgal nutrient assimilation. Oxidative stress and flow cytometry analysis for microalgal proliferation and death jointly revealed mechanisms of inhibition and subsequent self-adaptation. Results showed that exposures at 5 μg/L significantly inhibited microalgal nutrient assimilation and induced oxidative stress on day 7, with a recovery to levels comparable to the control by day 15. This self-adaptation and over 95 % removal of antibiotics jointly contributed to promoting microalgal growth and proliferation while reducing membrane-damaged cells. Under 500 μg/L SMM single-exposure, microalgae self-adapted to interferences on nutrient assimilation, maintaining unaffected growth and proliferation. However, over 60 % of SMM remained, leading to sustained oxidative stress and apoptosis. Remarkably, under 500 μg/L SMM-TMP co-exposure, the synergistic toxicity of SMM and TMP significantly impaired microalgal nutrient assimilation, reducing the degradation efficiency of SMM to about 20 %. Consequently, microalgal growth and proliferation were markedly inhibited, with rates of 9.15 % and 17.7 %, respectively, and a 1.36-fold increase in the proportion of cells with damaged membranes was observed. Sustained and severe oxidative stress was identified as the primary cause of these adverse effects. These findings shed light on the potential impacts of antibiotic mixtures at environmental concentrations on microalgae, facilitating responsible evaluation of the ecological risks of antibiotics in aquaculture ponds.

Abstract:Background: The cephalosporins class is among the most widely used group of antimicrobials worldwide. Antibiotics, together with other drugs and personal care products, make up a group of emerging contaminants. The effects of exposure to this group of chemical contaminants on non-target organisms are not well understood, as they are still poorly studied. Therefore, this study evaluated the phytotoxicity of five cephalosporins in Lactuca sativa. Methods: Lettuce seeds were exposed to different concentrations of antibiotics (25 to 500 mg/L) for 5 days in the dark. After this period, the germination percentage and the wet and dry weights were recorded. Results: The highest tested concentration (500 mg/L) inhibited the germination of lettuce seeds (p < 0.05); there was a decrease in dry weight when exposed to a first-generation cephalosporin (p < 0.05). Additionally, there was a significantly negative influence (p < 0.05) on the fresh weight, especially in the group that evaluated the exposure of seeds to 25 mg/L of Cefepime. Conclusions: We emphasize that there is no record of environmental concentrations of cephalosporins in soil, and therefore, we can indicate that it is possible to have environmental damage resulting from the inappropriate and constant disposal of cephalosporins in the environment.
Elucidating effects of single and multiple resistance mechanisms on bacterial response to meropenem by quantitative and systems pharmacology modeling and population genomics

Abstract:Meropenem is commonly used against . Traditionally, the time unbound antibiotic concentration exceeds the MIC ( T ) is used to select carbapenem regimens. We aimed to: characterize the effects of different baseline resistance mechanisms on bacterial killing and resistance emergence; evaluate whether T can predict these effects; and, develop a novel quantitative and systems pharmacology (QSP) model to describe effects of baseline resistance mechanisms on the time-course of bacterial response. Seven isogenic strains with a range of resistance mechanisms and MICs were used in 10-day hollow-fiber infection model studies. Meropenem pharmacokinetic profiles were simulated for various regimens (t =1.5h). All viable counts on drug-free, 3×MIC and 5×MIC meropenem-containing agar across all strains, five regimens and control (n=90 profiles) were simultaneously subjected to QSP modeling. Whole genome sequencing was completed for total population samples and emergent resistant colonies at 239h. Regimens achieving ≥98% T suppressed resistance emergence of the knockout strain. Even 100% T failed to achieve this against the strain with OprD loss and the and double-knockout strain. Baseline resistance mechanisms affected bacterial outcomes, even for strains with the same MIC. Genomic analysis revealed that pre-existing resistant subpopulations drove resistance emergence. During meropenem exposure, mutations in were selected in strains with baseline mutations, and , confirming these as major mechanisms of resistance emergence. Secondary mutations occurred in or , coding for lysyl and arginyl tRNA synthetases, respectively. The QSP model well characterized all bacterial outcomes of the seven strains simultaneously, which T could not.

Abstract:<p>The presence of antibiotics such as erythromycin, even in trace amounts, has long been acknowledged for negatively impacting ecosystems in freshwater environments. Although many studies have focused on the impact of antibiotic pollution at a macroecological level, the impact of erythromycin on microecosystems, such as freshwater biofilms, is still not fully understood. This knowledge gap may be attributed to the lack of robust multispecies biofilm models for fundamental investigations. Here, we used a lab-cultured multispecies biofilm model to elucidate the holistic response of a microbial community to erythromycin exposure using metagenomic and metabolomic approaches. Metagenomic analyses revealed that biofilm microbial diversity did not alter following erythromycin exposure. Notably, certain predicted metabolic pathways such as cell–cell communication pathways, amino acid metabolism, and peptidoglycan biosynthesis, mainly by the phyla Actinobacteria, Alpha/Beta-proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Verrucomicrobia, were found to be involved in the maintenance of homeostasis-like balance in the freshwater biofilm. Further untargeted metabolomics data highlighted changes in lipid metabolism and linoleic acid metabolism and their related molecules as a direct consequence of erythromycin exposure. Overall, the study presented a unique picture of how multispecies biofilms respond to single environmental stress exposures. Moreover, the study demonstrated the feasibility of using lab simulated multispecies biofilms for investigating their interaction and reactivity of specific bioactive compounds or pollutants at a fundamental level.</p>

Abstract:Antibiotics with significant environmental toxicity, e.g., tetracyclines (TCs), are often used in large quantities worldwide, with 50–80% of the applied dose ending up in the environment. This study aimed to investigate the effects of exposure to tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and minocycline hydrochloride (MIN) on L. minor. Our research evaluated the phytotoxicity of the TCs by analyzing plant growth and biomass and evaluating assimilation pigment levels and fluorescence. The research was extended with the ability potential of duckweed as a tool for removing TCs from water/wastewater. The results demonstrated that both TCs influenced Ir, Iy, biomass, and photosynthetic efficiency. The uptake of TC and MIN by duckweed was proportional to the concentration in the growth medium. The TC was absorbed more readily, reaching up to 8.09 mg × g−1 of dry weight (DW) at the highest concentration (19.2 mg × L−1), while MIN reached 6.01 mg × g−1 of DW. As indicated, the consequences of the influence of TC on plants were slightly smaller, in comparison to MIN, while the plants could biosorb this drug, even at the lowest tested concentration. This study has shown that using plants for drug biosorption can be an effective standalone or complementary method for water and wastewater treatment.

Abstract:A significant number of emerging pollutants resulting from point and diffuse pollution can be found in the aquatic environment. Pharmaceuticals, including antidepressants, are increasingly consumed across the world. Their good water solubility and resistance to biodegradation are major challenges to wastewater treatment. Pharmaceuticals enter aquatic systems mainly with wastewater via wastewater treatment plants. These emerging contaminants can be removed by introducing biological cleaning systems with plants that grow near secondary wastewater units. This study analyzed the ability of Lemna minor to bioaccumulate four antidepressants: sertraline (SER), fluoxetine (FLU), paroxetine (PAR), and mianserin (MNS). A significant decrease in drug concentrations was observed in the samples with L. minor in comparison with those without plants. Among the tested drugs, L. minor showed the greatest bioaccumulation potential for SER, and the lowest for FLU. The bioconcentration factor for MNS never exceeded 100 L kg–1 even after 7 days, while for SER it was 1,902 L kg–1. These results indicate that L. minor can influence the water treatment process in the natural ecosystem and serve as an effective tool in wastewater treatment for the removal of the analyzed antidepressants.

Abstract:Ampicillin (AMP) and cefazolin (CZO) are commonly used β-lactam antibiotics which are extensively globally produced. Additionally, AMP and CZO are known to have relatively high ecotoxicity. Notably, the mix of AMP and CZO creates a synergistic effect that is more harmful to the environment, and how exposure to AMP-CZO can induce synergism in algae remains virtually unknown. To yield comprehensive mechanistic insights into chemical toxicity, including dose–response relationships and variations in species sensitivity, the integration of multiple endpoints with de novo transcriptomics analyses were used in this study. We employed Selenastrum capricornutum to investigate its toxicological responses to AMP and CZO at various biological levels, with the aim of elucidating the underlying mechanisms. Our assessment of multiple endpoints revealed a significant growth inhibition in response to AMP at the relevant concentrations. This inhibition was associated with increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and perturbations in nitrogen metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and energy metabolism. Growth inhibition in the presence of CZO and the AMP-CZO combination was linked to reduced viability levels, elevated ROS production, decreased total soluble protein content, inhibited photosynthesis, and disruptions in the key signaling pathways related to starch and sucrose metabolism, ribosome function, amino acid biosynthesis, and the production of secondary metabolites. It was concluded from the physiological level that the synergistic effect of Chlorophyll a (Chla) and Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity strengthened the growth inhibition of S. capricornutum in the AMP-CZO synergistic group. According to the results of transcriptomic analysis, the simultaneous down-regulation of LHCA4, LHCA1, LHCA5, and sodA destroyed the functions of the photosynthetic system and the antioxidant system, respectively. Such information is invaluable for environmental risk assessments. The results provided critical knowledge for a better understanding of the potential ecological impacts of these antibiotics on non-target organisms.

Abstract:Veterinary pharmaceuticals may cause unexpected adverse effects on non-target aquatic species. While these pharmaceuticals were previously identified as priority compounds in ambient water, their ecological risks are relatively unknown. In this study, a series of chronic toxicity tests were conducted for these pharmaceuticals using algae, two cladocerans, and a fish. After a 21-d exposure to amoxicillin, enrofloxacin, and neomycin, no observed effect concentration (NOEC) for the reproduction of Daphnia magna was detected at 27.2, 3.3, and 0.15 mg/L, respectively. For the survival of juvenile Oryzias latipes following the 40-d exposure, NOEC was found at 21.8, 3.2, and 0.87 mg/L, respectively. Based on the results of the chronic toxicity tests and those reported in the literature, predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs) were determined at 0.078, 4.9, and 3.0 μg/L for amoxicillin, enrofloxacin, and neomycin, respectively. Their hazard quotients (HQs) were less than 1 at their average levels of occurrence in ambient freshwater. However, HQs based on the maximum detected levels of amoxicillin and enrofloxacin were determined at 21.2 and 6.1, respectively, suggesting potential ecological risks. As the potential ecological risks of these veterinary pharmaceuticals at heavily contaminated sites cannot be ignored, hotspot delineation and its management are required.
