Abstract:Ice slurry ingestion enhances exercise performance by lowering the core body temperature. However, an operational issue related to this ingestion is the requirement for a high intake of 7.5 g·kg -1 to produce the desired effects. We investigated the effects of the intake of low amounts of ice slurry at −2°C on the tympanic temperature and exercise performance during repeated high-intensity intermittent exercises in a hot environment. This study was a randomized, crossover study, with a 6-day washout period. Twelve university rugby union players performed two 30-min sessions of high-intensity intermittent exercises separated by a 15-min half-time break on a cycle ergometer in a hot environment (28.8°C ± 0.1°C, 49.5% ± 0.6% relative humidity). The participants ingested 450 g of −2°C-ice slurry (ICE), or a 30°C-beverage (CON) having the same composition as ICE, or 30°C-water (WAT) during the half-time break. The tympanic temperature and skin temperature were measured as the physiological data, and the peak power and mean power as the exercise performance data. The tympanic temperature at the half-time break and beginning of the 2 nd session was significantly lower in the ICE group as compared with the CON and WAT groups. The skin temperature at the half-time break was significantly lower in the ICE group as compared with the WAT group. While the peak power and mean power during the 2 nd session were significantly greater in the ICE group as compared with the CON and WAT groups. Our findings suggest that even the intake of lower amounts, as compared with those used in previous studies, of low-temperature ice slurry can reduce the body temperature and improve the peak power. These results suggest that intake of low-temperature ice slurry as a strategy for internal body cooling is useful for improving endurance exercise performance in hot environments.

Abstract:In order to seek proper nucleation additive to decrease the supercooling degree of ice storage solution and increase the freezing rate,an experiment device was setup to analyze the phase change of ice-water procedure in different surrounding temperatures and using different additives.For additive A,when surrounding temperature was-5.1 ℃,supercooling degree was 4.5 ℃,and the total freezing time was 165 min;when surrounding temperature was-4.0 ℃,supercooling degree was 4.0 ℃,and the total freezing time was 410 min;For additive B,when surrounding temperature was-4.0 ℃,supercooling degree was(2.4 ℃),and the total freezing time was 150 min.Proper additive can raise the evaporating temperature of a refrigerator in ice storage system and increase the energy savings.
Epidural Cooling for Selective Brain Hypothermia in Porcine Model

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Hypothermia has been shown to be neuroprotective in many animal models and several human trials of brain ischemic and trauma. However systemic hypothermia may result in fatal complications. This study was undertaken to test epidural cooling as a new method of inducing selective brain hypothermia.METHOD:Six adult swine (mean mass, 33.8+/-3.6 kg) were studied. Anesthesia was maintained with pentobarbital sodium (25 mg kg-1, i.v.) and pancuronium bromide (0.5 mg kg-1 h-1, i.v.). Five probes were placed in the rectum, deep brain, brain surface, epidural space, and room air for temperature monitoring respectively. Epidural cooling was performed using cold-saline (4 degrees C) perfusion into the epidural space through a flexible double-lumen catheter. The dripping speed of cold saline was controlled to maintain the target temperature. The changes of the epidural space pressure, complete blood counts, basic metabolic panels, tests for fibrinolysis and coagulation status were monitored to assess hypothermia-induced changes.FINDINGS:Following the epidural cooling perfused with cold-saline (4 degrees C) at mean dripping speed of 720 ml per hour, the local brain surface temperature could decrease rapidly to 17.3-21.6 degrees C within one minute, and deep brain temperature decreased to 27.2-29.7 degrees C within 5 minutes. The target temperatures were easily controlled by the dripping speed of cold saline (from mild to deep hypothermia). The rectal temperature was maintained at normal range within 6 perfusion hours. No arrhythmia was observed, and all hematological variables were within the normal range for swine. No increased intracranial pressure was induced by the cooling method.CONCLUSIONS:The data demonstrate that epidural space cooling was technically feasible and useful for selective brain hypothermia, and the target temperatures are easily controlled. The induction of hypothermia was rapid and maintained for a long period of time, whereas the body temperature was maintained within the normal range and without hemodynamic instability.
Suppressing the Supercooling Effect of Erythritol by Bubbling for Latent Heat Storage

Abstract:Erythritol, a phase change material (PCM) pertinent to the medium temperature range latent heat storage applications, has the advantages of large storage density, non-toxicity, and high chemical compatibility, but it also suffers from serious supercooling upon cool-down to release the stored heat. In this work, the bubbling method was attempted as an economic and easy way to suppress the supercooling effect of erythritol. At a flow rate of 300 mL/min, N2 bubbles of the size of about 4.4 mm in diameter were continuously introduced into molten erythritol under various subcooling temperatures of ΔTsub = 30, 40, 50, 60, and 95 °C. At the same flow rate, slightly larger bubbles of about 6 mm in diameter were also tested as a contrast case at a single subcooling temperature of ΔTsub = 30°C. The presence of the bubbles was clearly exhibited to successfully facilitate crystallization process of erythritol. It was shown that when ΔTsub = 40, 50, 60, and 95 °C, the introduction of N2 bubbles can reduce the nucleation temperatures Tn by 7.0, 8.2, 10.0 and 5.7°C, respectively, and shorten the crystallization time tc by 19.7%, 14.8%, 13.8%, and 6.4%, respectively. At the lowest subcooling of ΔTsub = 30 °C, erythritol cannot crystallize without the presence of bubbles. The size of the bubbles was found to have negligible effect as the complete crystallization time remains almost the same with the two bubble sizes.

Abstract:Based on the experimental data, different models during the phase change of solid-liquid in ice storage were studied in this research. An annulus solid ice began to grow slowly from the inside wall to the center region when there was no supercooling. Uniform solid-liquid mixtures shaped when there had supercooling. The thermal resistence was larger when there had no supercooling. The time required for complete solid ice growth was longer than there had supercooling. With the result, low supercooling would have the benefit to energy saving in cool storage air-conditioning system.

Abstract:Context: Precooling is the pre-exercise reduction of body temperature and is an effective method of improving physiologic function and exercise performance in environmental heat. A practical and effective method of precooling suitable for application at athletic venues has not been demonstrated. Objective: To confirm the effectiveness of pre-exercise ingestion of cold fluid without fluid ingestion during exercise on pre-exercise core temperature and to determine whether pre-exercise ingestion of cold fluid alone without continued provision of cold fluid during exercise can improve exercise performance in the heat. Design: Randomized controlled clinical trial. Setting: Environmental chamber at an exercise physiology laboratory that was maintained at 32°C, 60% relative humidity, and 3.2 m/s facing air velocity. Patients or other participants: Seven male recreational cyclists (age = 21 ± 1.5 years, height = 1.81 ± 0.07 m, mass = 78.4 ± 9.2 kg) participated. Intervention(s): Participants ingested 900 mL of cold (2°C) or control (37°C) flavored water in 3 300-mL aliquots over 35 minutes of pre-exercise rest. Main outcome measure(s): Rectal temperature and thermal comfort before exercise and distance cycled, power output, pacing, rectal temperature, mean skin temperature, heart rate, blood lactate, thermal comfort, perceived exertion, and sweat loss during exercise. Results: During rest, a greater decrease in rectal temperature was observed with ingestion of the cold fluid (0.41 ± 0.16°C) than the control fluid (0.17 ± 0.17°C) over 35 to 5 minutes before exercise (t(6) = -3.47, P = .01). During exercise, rectal temperature was lower after ingestion of the cold fluid at 5 to 25 minutes (t(6) range, 2.53-3.38, P ≤ .05). Distance cycled was greater after ingestion of the cold fluid (19.26 ± 2.91 km) than after ingestion of the control fluid (18.72 ± 2.59 km; t(6) = -2.80, P = .03). Mean power output also was greater after ingestion of the cold fluid (275 ± 27 W) than the control fluid (261 ± 22 W; t(6) = -2.13, P = .05). No differences were observed for pacing, mean skin temperature, heart rate, blood lactate, thermal comfort, perceived exertion, and sweat loss (P > .05). Conclusions: We demonstrated that pre-exercise ingestion of cold fluid is a simple, effective precooling method suitable for field-based application.

Abstract:Cold exposure increases blood pressure (BP) and salivary flow rate (SFR). Increased cold-induced SFR would be hypothesised to enhance oral nitrate delivery for reduction to nitrite by oral anaerobes and to subsequently elevate plasma [nitrite] and nitric oxide bioavailability. We tested the hypothesis that dietary nitrate supplementation would increase plasma [nitrite] and lower BP to a greater extent in cool compared to normothermic conditions. Twelve males attended the laboratory on four occasions. Baseline measurements were completed at 28°C. Subsequently, participants ingested 140 mL of concentrated nitrate-rich (BR; ~13 mmol nitrate) or nitrate-depleted (PL) beetroot juice. Measurements were repeated over 3 h at either 28°C (Norm) or 20°C (Cool). Mean skin temperature was lowered compared to baseline in PL-Cool and BR-Cool. SFR was greater in BR-Norm, PL-Cool and BR-Cool than PL-Norm. Plasma [nitrite] at 3 h was higher in BR-Cool (592 ± 239 nM) vs. BR-Norm (410 ± 195 nM). Systolic BP (SBP) at 3 h was not different between PL-Norm (117 ± 6 mmHg) and BR-Norm (113 ± 9 mmHg). SBP increased above baseline at 1, 2 and 3 h in PL-Cool but not BR-Cool. These results suggest that BR consumption is more effective at increasing plasma [nitrite] in cool compared to normothermic conditions and blunts the rise in BP following acute cool air exposure, which might have implications for attenuating the increased cardiovascular strain in the cold.

Cooling During Exercise: An Overlooked Strategy for Enhancing Endurance Performance in the Heat

Abstract:It is well established that endurance performance is negatively affected by environmental heat stress due to a complex interaction of physical, physiological and psychological alterations. Numerous scientific investigations have attempted to improve performance in the heat with pre-cooling (cooling prior to an exercise test), and as such this has become a well-established ergogenic practice for endurance athletes. However, the use of mid-cooling (cooling during an exercise test) has received considerably less research attention in comparison, despite recent evidence to suggest that the advantage gained from mid-cooling may outweigh that of pre-cooling. A range of mid-cooling strategies are beneficial for endurance performance in the heat, including the ingestion of cold fluids and ice slurry, both with and without menthol, as well as cooling of the neck and face region via a cooling collar or water poured on the head and face. The combination of pre-cooling and mid-cooling has also been effective, but few comparisons exist between the timing and type of such interventions. Therefore, athletes should experiment with a range of suitable mid-cooling strategies for their event during mock competition scenarios, with the aim to determine their individual tolerable limits and performance benefits. Based on current evidence, the effect of mid-cooling on core temperature appears largely irrelevant to any subsequent performance improvements, while cardiovascular, skin temperature, central nervous system function and psychophysiological factors are likely involved. Research is lacking on elite athletes, and as such it is currently unclear how this population may benefit from mid-cooling.

Abstract:Cold water or ice slurry ingestion during exercise seems to be an effective and practical means to improve endurance exercise performance in the heat. However, transient reductions in sweating appear to decrease the potential for evaporative heat loss from the skin by a magnitude that at least negates the additional internal heat loss as a cold ingested fluid warms up to equilibrate with body temperature; thus explaining equivalent core temperatures during exercise at a fixed heat production irrespective of the ingested fluid temperature. Internal heat transfer with cold fluid/ice is always 100% efficient; therefore, when a decrement occurs in the efficiency that sweat evaporates from the skin surface (i.e. sweating efficiency), a net cooling effect should begin to develop. Using established relationships between activity, climate and sweating efficiency, the boundary conditions beyond which cold ingested fluids are beneficial in terms of increasing net heat loss can be calculated. These conditions are warmer and more humid for cycling relative to running by virtue of the greater skin surface airflow, which promotes evaporation, for a given metabolic heat production and thus sweat rate. Within these boundary conditions, athletes should ingest fluids at the temperature they find most palatable, which likely varies from athlete to athlete, and therefore best maintain hydration status. The cooling benefits of cold fluid/ice ingestion during exercise are likely disproportionately greater for athletes with physiological disruptions to sweating, such as those with a spinal cord injury or burn injuries, as their capacity for skin surface evaporative heat loss is much lower; however, more research examining these groups is needed.

Abstract:By performing electrocochleography (AP, SP and CM) on 34 patients with sudden deafness, it was thought that the pathophysiology of this disease could be deduced. The various waveform patterns of AP and SP responses obtained in cases of sudden deafness were classified into the following types: 1) AP high response; 2) decreased AP high response; 3) AP low response; 4) dominant — SP; 5) — SP or + SP; and 6) AP, SP no response. The cases showing the type of dominant — SP and AP high response had satisfactory prognoses. In these cases the sensory epithelium and the cochlear nerve seemed to indicate a reversible condition being affected by the temporary functional block. Furthermore, it seemed to indicate that the neural regions related to the source of AP(N1) response were impaired in cases in which CM were recorded at normal response threshold in spite of the absence of AP(N1) response. In the unsatisfactory prognosis cases with decreased AP high response, AP low response and AP, SP no response in which only the extremely low or depressed CM responses could be recorded, it seemed that the sensory epithelium and the cochlear nerve were affected permanently, although the degree of impairment varied.
In-play optimal cooling for outdoor match-play tennis in the heat

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of four cooling interventions used for reducing physiological and perceptual strain and improving exercise performance during outdoor match-play tennis in the heat. Eight competitive tennis players played four counter-balanced simulated outdoor matches in the heat (WBGT: 28.4-32.5°C) at 24- or 48-h intervals. Each match comprised 3 sets for which the "no-ad" rule was applied to limit duration variability. Players underwent the following cooling interventions: ad libitum fluid ingestion (CON), ad libitum fluid ingestion and ice vest (VEST), total ingestion of approximately 1000 g ice slurry and ice vest (Combined: BINE), or total ingestion of approximately 400 g ice slurry and ice vest (Low-combined: L-BINE). Gastrointestinal temperature was lower in the BINE and the L-BINE trials than in the CON trial at the set-break of set 1, and these differences in gastrointestinal temperature persisted throughout the remainder of the match (p < 0.05). The ratio of moderate-high intensity activity (≥10 km/h) in set 3 was significantly higher in the L-BINE trial than that in the BINE trial (p < 0.05). In the CON and BINE trials, high intensity activity was significantly lower in set 3 compared with set 1 and 2, respectively. Cooling by optimal ice slurry ingestion and ice vest may be a more effective strategy in mitigating the development of heat strain during outdoor match-play tennis in the heat.Highlights Cooling by optimal ice slurry ingestion and ice vest may be a more effective strategy in mitigating the development of heat strain during outdoor match-play tennis in the heat.Ingesting of large amounts ice slurry may be caused the bloating and stomach discomfort, in turn declined in the ratio of moderate-high intensity activity in the second half of match-play tennis in hot outdoor environments.Future studies should not only utilize match characteristics, but also measure on-court tennis specific performance.

Abstract:Despite optimal cognitive function being essential for performance, there is a lack of research on the effectiveness of combined cooling interventions on team sport athlete's cognitive function when exercising in the heat. In a randomised, crossover design, 12 unacclimatised men (age: 22.3 ± 3.0 years, body mass: 73.4 ± 5.1 kg, height: 181.0 ± 5.3 cm and V ˙ O 2 $\dot{\mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ max: 51.2 ± 9.5 mL/kg/min) participated in a control (CON) and combined cooling trial (ice slurry and ice collar; COOL). A battery of cognitive tests were completed prior to, during (at half-time) and following a 90-min intermittent running protocol in the heat (33°C, 50% relative humidity (RH)). Perceptual and physiological measures were taken throughout the protocol. In CON, response times were quicker on the Stroop task complex level (p = 0.002) and the visual search test complex level at full-time (p = 0.014) compared to COOL. During COOL, response times were quicker at half-time on the Stroop task complex level (p = 0.024) compared to CON. Lower rectal temperatures were seen during COOL (CON: 37.44 ± 0.65°C and COOL: 37.28 ± 0.68°C) as well as lower skin, neck and forehead temperatures (main effect of trial, all p < 0.05). Lower ratings of thermal sensation and perceived exertion and enhanced thermal comfort were recorded during COOL (main effect of trial, all p < 0.05). Whilst minimal differences in cognitive function were found when using the combined cooling intervention, the findings highlight a practical and effective strategy to improving many physiological and perceptual responses to intermittent exercise in the heat.
Ice Slurry Ingestion Lowers Thermoregulatory Strain in Wheelchair Tennis Players During Repeated Sprint Intervals in the Heat

Abstract:Purpose: To examine the efficacy of per-cooling via ice slurry ingestion (ICE) in wheelchair tennis players exercising in the heat. Method: Eight wheelchair tennis players undertook sprints (4 sets of 10 × 5 s over 40 min) in a hot environment (∼32 °C), interspersed by 3 boluses of 2.67 g·kg (6.8 g·kg total) ICE or drinking temperate water (control condition). Athletes performed an on-court test of repeated sprint ability (20 × 20 m) in temperate conditions immediately before and 20 minutes after the heat exposure, and time to complete each sprint as well as intermediate times were recorded. Gastrointestinal and weighted mean skin and forehead temperatures were collected throughout the heat exposure, as were thermal sensation, heart rate, and blood lactate concentration. Sweat rate was calculated from body mass changes and fluid/ice intakes. Results: Compared with the control condition, ICE resulted in a significantly lower gastrointestinal temperature (95% CI, 0.11-0.17 °C; P < .001), forehead temperature (0.58-1.06 °C; P < .001), thermal sensation (0.07-0.50 units; P = .017), and sweat rate (0.06-0.46 L·h-1; P = .017). Skin temperature, heart rate, and blood lactate concentration were not significantly different between conditions (P ≥ .598). There was no overall change preheating to postheating (P ≥ .114) or an effect of condition (P ≥ .251) on repeated sprint times. Conclusions: ICE is effective at lowering objective and subjective thermal strain when consumed between sets of repeated wheelchair sprints in the heat. However, ICE has no effect on on-court repeated 20-m sprint performance.

Abstract:Ice slurry ingestion has been widely used as an effective pre-exercise cooling strategy for athletes to improve exercise performance while competing in the heat. Nonetheless, its potential to improve thermal comfort for office workers in various indoor environments has received little attention. In this study, two representative external and internal body cooling modalities, ice slurry ingestion (ICE) and desk fan (FAN), were used under free control in three warm/hot environments (30, 32, and 34 °C, RH = 50%). Throughout the heat exposure, the subjects' physiological responses (heart rate and local skin temperatures) were recorded, as well as their overall and local thermal perceptions. The subjects' usage behavior was recorded, including the fanning speed level and ice slurry ingestion rate. The results show that, when compared to the FAN condition, ICE resulted in significantly lower thermal sensation (decreased by 0.93 rating scale, p < 0.01) and sweat rate (38.3 ± 34.6 g/h, p < 0.01), as well as higher thermal comfort (increased by 1.17 rating scales, p < 0.05) at 34 °C. The total amount of ice slurry ingested by the subjects increased significantly with increasing air temperature, from 107.5 ± 64.1 g/h to 249.2 ± 84.1 g/h ( p < 0.001). This study demonstrates the pronounced efficacy of ice slurry ingestion to sustain young female occupant thermal comfort at 30–34 °C indoor temperatures. Further research is still necessary to investigate the efficacy of ice slurry ingestion in higher indoor temperatures during extreme heatwaves, however.

Abstract:Palm cooling is a simple and easily implemented intervention strategy during exercise. We aimed to examine the effects of bilateral palm cooling before and during exercise on thermoregulatory-related and subjective indicators in a hot environment. Ten active men (age: 21 ± 1 years; height 172.2 ± 5.7 cm; weight 67.4 ± 7.2 kg) underwent three experimental trials at the same time of the day, consisting of palm cooling with 12°C (ICE12°C), palm cooling with 0°C (ICE0°C) where vasoconstriction is supposed to occur, and control (CON) trials. After 30 min rest at ambient temperature, participants performed 20 min exercise at 33°C, 60% relative humidity. Rectal temperature, skin temperature, rate of perceived exertion, heart rate, local sweat rate, oxygen uptake, carbon dioxide production, and respiratory exchange ratio did not differ between the trials. Thermal sensation and comfort were lower in the ICE12°C and ICE0°C trials than in the CON trial, but the ICE0°C trial showed a longer duration of cold sensation than the ICE12°C trial. Palm cooling at 12°C and 0°C improved thermal sensation and thermal comfort during exercise in a hot environment, although there was no effect on core body temperature, sweating, and cardiorespiratory function. Bilateral palm cooling at 12°C and 0°C improve subjective indicators during exercise in a hot environment and these effects are slightly greater at 0°C than at 12°C cooling, while having no effect on thermoregulatory-related indicators. These results suggest that bilateral palm cooling at lower temperatures may safely reduce the perception of warmth during exercise in a hot environment.

Abstract:Precooling (i.e., removal of heat from the body immediately prior to exercise) is a popular strategy for alleviating thermal strain. Although whole body water immersion is most commonly used to precool in experimental studies, this method is not always possible in all field settings, or practical. In the present study, we examined the effectiveness of a novel combination of fanning and hands and feet water immersion as practical precooling method on heat strain while wearing protective clothing. Nine males engaged in 60 min of walking at a moderate speed (2.5 km/h) in a hot environment (37°C, 50%RH) while wearing protective clothing. Before walking, they were exposed to fanning (4 m/s) and spraying over the body and to hands and feet water immersion (18°C) for 30 min (FAN+WI). Rectal temperature and heart rate at the end of walking were lower in WI+FAN trial than in the control trial (37.7 ± 0.1 vs. 38.2 ± 0.1°C; 134 ± 9 vs. 118 ± 9°C, p < 0.05, respectively). The attenuations in FAN+WI trial did not differ to that in WI only trial (we have previously reported). Sweat rate in the chest and percentage reduction in body weight were inhibited by WI+FAN (1.3 ± 0.1 vs. 1.8 ± 0.1 mg/cm 2 /min; −1.6 ± 0.2 vs. −0.9 ± 0.1 %, p < 0.05, respectively), and the inhibitions were greater than in WI only trial (p < 0.05). Mean skin temperature was lower in FAN+WI trial than in the control at the end of precooling (29.0 ± 0.4 vs. 34.0 ± 0.2°C, p < 0.05) and walking (37.0 ± 0.1 vs. 37.3 ± 0.1°C, p < 0.05). Perceptions by ratings of visual analogue scale (thermal sensation and pleasantness, physical and psychological fatigues, thirst, and damp sensation) were lower in WI+FAN trial than in the control trial (p < 0.05). The attenuation in the rating score of thirst has not been seen in WI only trial. These results suggest that combined precooling of fanning and hands and feet water immersion can inhibit dehydration and thirst more compared to each cooling conducted alone. The lower mean body skin temperature in the combined cooling procedure may contribute to attenuation of sweating. Support or Funding Information KAKENHI‐25293155

Abstract:Introduction: Hyperthermia during exercise induces central and peripheral fatigue and impairs physical performance. To facilitate heat loss and optimize performance, athletes can hasten body cooling prior (pre-cooling) or during (per-cooling) exercise. However, it is unclear whether per-cooling effect is the same on 'aerobic' and 'anaerobic' types of exercise (duration <75 and >76 seconds, respectively, according to Gastin [Sports Med 2001;31:725-741]) and whether the body area that is cooled makes a difference. Methods: A literature search led to the identification of 1582 potential studies. Included studies had to include physical exercise with sufficient details on the type, duration, intensity, and provide valid performance measures and a cooling intervention administered during exercise with sufficient details on the type and site of application. Results: Forty-five studies were included. Per-cooling provides a performance benefit during 'aerobic' (standardized mean difference (SMD) of 0.60, P < .001) and 'anaerobic' exercises (SMD = 0.27, P < .02). The effects were greater during aerobic compared to anaerobic exercises (P < .01). Internal cooling (cold fluid ingestion such as cold water and ice slurry/menthol beverage) and external cooling (face, neck, and torso) provide the greatest performance benefit for 'aerobic' performance with a moderate to large effect (0.46 < SMD < 1.24). For 'anaerobic' exercises, wearing a whole-body cooling garment is the best way to enhance exercise performance (SMD = 0.39, P < .01). Conclusion: Per-cooling improves 'aerobic' and 'anaerobic' exercise performance with a greater benefit for 'aerobic' exercise. The magnitude of the effect depends on the type and site of the cooling application.
