Abstract:In humans, skin blood flow (SkBF) and sweating are tightly coupled, suggesting common neural control and regulation and possible interactive effects of extracellular fluid delivery and sweat secretion. This study was designed to separate these two sympathetic nervous system end‐organ responses via SkBF‐decreasing mechanical perturbations in the presence of a strong sudomotor drive. Two women and 4 men (age 26±1 yrs and BMI 24±4 kg/m 2 ) were tested in normothermia and heat stress conditions, by pumping neutral (34°C) and hot (46–50°C) water through a high‐density tube‐lined suit to either maintain internal temperature (pill telemetry) or increase it by ~1.0°C. Arm and leg SkBF (laser‐Doppler flowmetry) was decreased for 3 min by engaging the venoarteriolar response (limb lowered ~30 cm from heart level; CVAR), venoarteriolar response plus a decrease in perfusion pressure (venous occlusion by proximal cuff inflation; CVAR with ΔPP), and ischemia (arterial occlusion by proximal cuff inflation). Decreased SkBF was observed with CVAR (30±7 and 60±15%), CVAR with ΔPP (44±12 and 86±11%), and ischemia (96±1 and 99±1% for the arm and leg, respectively) during normothermia. Despite these significant decreases in SkBF, there were no significant effects on transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Heat stress increased intestinal temperature from 37.1±0.1 to 38.0±0.1°C, heart rate (ECG) from 65±5 to 93±4 bpm, arm cutaneous vascular conductance (SkBF/mean arterial pressure*100) from 52±12 to 473±85 units, and forearm sweat rate (capacitance hygrometry) from 0.0 to 0.6±0.1 mg/ml/min. During heat stress, decreased SkBF was also observed during CVAR (20±7 and 17±6%), CVAR with ΔPP (39±9 and 52±13%), and ischemia (99±1 and 100±1% for the arm and leg, respectively). Despite these significant decreases in SkBF, eccrine sweat rate was not significantly affected. These data indicate that a wide range of acute changes in SkBF do not appear to affect TEWL or eccrine sweating in peripheral skin. This abstract is from the Experimental Biology 2018 Meeting. Rate dependency and role of nitric oxide in the vascular response to direct cooling in human skin

Abstract:Local cooling of nonglabrous skin without functional sympathetic nerves causes an initial vasodilation followed by vasoconstriction. To further characterize these responses to local cooling, we examined the importance of the rate of local cooling and the effect of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition in intact skin and in skin with vasoconstrictor function inhibited. Release of norepinephrine was blocked locally (iontophoresis) with bretylium tosylate (BT). Skin blood flow was monitored from the forearm by laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF). Cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) was calculated as the ratio of LDF to blood pressure. Local temperature was controlled over 6.3 cm2 around the sites of LDF measurement. Local cooling was applied at -0.33 or -4 degrees C/min. At -4 degrees C/min, CVC increased (P < 0.05) at BT sites in the early phase. At -0.33 degrees C/min, there was no early vasodilator response, but there was a delay in the onset of vasoconstriction relative to intact skin. The NOS inhibitor N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (intradermal microdialysis) decreased (P < 0.05) CVC by 28.3 +/- 3.8% at untreated sites and by 46.9 +/- 6.3% at BT-treated sites from the value before infusion. Rapid local cooling (-4 degrees C/min) to 24 degrees C decreased (P < 0.05) CVC at both untreated (saline) sites and L-NAME only sites from the precooling levels, but it transiently increased (P < 0.05) CVC at both BT + saline sites and BT + L-NAME sites in the early phase. After 35-45 min of local cooling, CVC decreased at BT + saline sites relative to the precooling levels (P < 0.05), but at BT + L-NAME sites CVC was not reduced below the precooling level (P = 0.29). These findings suggest that the rate of local cooling, but not functional NOS, is an important determinant of the early non-adrenergic vasodilator response to local cooling and that functional NOS, adrenergic nerves, as well as other mechanisms play roles in vasoconstriction during prolonged local cooling of skin.
Active cutaneous vasodilation in resting humans during mild heat stress

Abstract:The role of skin temperature in reflex control of the active cutaneous vasodilator system was examined in six subjects during mild graded heat stress imposed by perfusing water at 34, 36, 38, and 40 degrees C through a tube-lined garment. Skin sympathetic nerve activity (SSNA) was recorded from the peroneal nerve with microneurography. While monitoring esophageal, mean skin, and local skin temperatures, we recorded skin blood flow at bretylium-treated and untreated skin sites by using laser-Doppler velocimetry and local sweat rate by using capacitance hygrometry on the dorsal foot. Cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) was calculated by dividing skin blood flow by mean arterial pressure. Mild heat stress increased mean skin temperature by 0.2 or 0.3 degrees C every stage, but esophageal and local skin temperature did not change during the first three stages. CVC at the bretylium tosylate-treated site (CVC(BT)) and sweat expulsion number increased at 38 and 40 degrees C compared with 34 degrees C (P < 0.05); however, CVC at the untreated site did not change. SSNA increased at 40 degrees C (P < 0.05, different from 34 degrees C). However, SSNA burst amplitude increased (P < 0.05), whereas SSNA burst duration decreased (P < 0.05), at the same time as we observed the increase in CVC(BT) and sweat expulsion number. These data support the hypothesis that the active vasodilator system is activated by changes in mean skin temperature, even at normal core temperature, and illustrate the intricate competition between active vasodilator and the vasoconstrictor system for control of skin blood flow during mild heat stress.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have emerged as an effective solution for a wide range of applications. Most of the traditional WSN architectures consist of static nodes which are densely deployed over a sensing area. Recently, several WSN architectures based on mobile elements (MEs) have been proposed. Most of them exploit mobility to address the problem of data collection in WSNs. In this article we first define WSNs with MEs and provide a comprehensive taxonomy of their architectures, based on the role of the MEs. Then we present an overview of the data collection process in such a scenario, and identify the corresponding issues and challenges. On the basis of these issues, we provide an extensive survey of the related literature. Finally, we compare the underlying approaches and solutions, with hints to open problems and future research directions.
Field torso-warming modalities: a comparative study using a human model

Abstract:Objective: To compare four field-appropriate torso-warming modalities that do not require alternating-current (AC) electrical power, using a human model of nonshivering hypothermia. Methods: Five subjects, serving as their own controls, were cooled four times in 8 degrees C water for 10-30 minutes. Shivering was inhibited by buspirone (30 mg) taken orally prior to cooling and intravenous (IV) meperidine (1.25 mg/kg) at the end of immersion. Subjects were hoisted out of the water, dried, and insulated and then underwent 120 minutes of one of the following: spontaneous warming only; a charcoal heater on the chest; two flexible hot-water bags (total 4 liters of water at 55 degrees C, replenished every 20 minutes) applied to the chest and upper back; or two chemical heating pads applied to the chest and upper back. Supplemental meperidine (maximum cumulative dose of 3.5 mg/kg) was administered as required to inhibit shivering. Results: The postcooling afterdrop (i.e., the continued decrease in body core temperature during the early period of warming), compared with spontaneous warming (2.2 degrees C), was less for the chemical heating pads (1.5 degrees C) and the hot-water bags (1.6 degrees C, p < 0.05) and was 1.8 degrees C for the charcoal heater. Subsequent core rewarming rates for the hot-water bags (0.7 degree C/h) and the charcoal heater (0.6 degree C/h) tended to be higher than that for the chemical heating pads (0.2 degree C/h) and were significantly higher than that for spontaneous warming rate (0.1 degrees C/h, p < 0.05). Conclusion: In subjects with shivering suppressed, greater sources of external heat were effective in attenuating core temperature afterdrop, whereas sustained sources of external heat effectively established core rewarming. Depending on the scenario and available resources, we recommend the use of charcoal heaters, chemical heating pads, or hot-water bags as effective means for treating cold patients in the field or during transport to definitive care.

Abstract:Abstract A full account of architectural science must include empirical findings about the social and psychological influences that buildings have on their occupants. Tall residential buildings can have a myriad of such effects. This review summarizes the results of research on the influences of high-rise buildings on residents' experiences of the building, satisfaction, preferences, social behavior, crime and fear of crime, children, mental health and suicide. Most conclusions are tempered by moderating factors, including residential socioeconomic status, neighborhood quality, parenting, gender, stage of life, indoor density, and the ability to choose a housing form. However, moderators aside, the literature suggests that high-rises are less satisfactory than other housing forms for most people, that they are not optimal for children, that social relations are more impersonal and helping behavior is less than in other housing forms, that crime and fear of crime are greater, and that they may independently account for some suicides.
A comparative study of human skin thermal response to sapphire contact and cryogen spray cooling

Abstract:Surface cooling, in conjunction with various thermally mediated therapeutic procedures, can provide a means to protect superficial tissues from injury while achieving destruction of deeper targeted structures. We have investigated the thermal response of in-vivo human skin to: 1) contact cooling with a sapphire window (6-12 degrees C); and 2) spray cooling with a freon substitute cryogen [tetrafluoroethane; boiling point approximately -26 degrees C at 1 atmospheric pressure (atm)]. Measurements utilizing infrared radiometry show surface temperature reductions from 30 degrees C to 14-19 degrees C are obtained within approximately 1 s in response to sapphire contact cooling. Surface temperature reductions to values between 5 degrees C and -9 degrees C are obtained in response to 20-100-ms cryogen spurts. Computational results, based on fitting the measured radiometric surface temperature to estimate heat transfer parameters, show: 1) temperature reductions remain localized to approximately 200 microns of superficial tissue; and 2) values of heat flux and total energy removed per unit skin surface area at least doubled when using cryogen spray cooling.

Abstract:Objective To interpret the effect of the local cooling on thermal response of human brain by way of the concept of system biology.Methods The thermal response of healthy human face was monitored using infrared thermometer when his neck was subjected to strong local surface cooling.Further,three-dimensional heat transfer process in the brain tissue subjected to local peripheral cooling was simulated via theoretical modeling.Results The fact that a strong enough local cooling(for example by 0 ℃ ice and water mixture) on jugular vessel could possibly increase heart rate and raise facial temperature rather than reduce it,showed a complex systematic regulation mechanism of thermal physiology.However,no such thermoregulation phenomenon was observed when 55 ℃ warm water was used to heat the jugular vessel.Conclusion This study is expected to be a valuable reference for conducting an efficient thermal administration and temperature monitoring during clinical brain hypothermic resuscitation.
The Clamping of End-Tidal Carbon Dioxide Does Not Influence Cognitive Function Performance During Moderate Hyperthermia With or Without Skin Temperature Manipulation

Abstract:Increases in body temperature from heat stress (i.e., hyperthermia) generally impairs cognitive function across a range of domains and complexities, but the relative contribution from skin versus core temperature changes remains unclear. Hyperthermia also elicits a hyperventilatory response that decreases the partial pressure of end-tidal carbon dioxide (P et CO 2 ) and subsequently cerebral blood flow that may influence cognitive function. We studied the role of skin and core temperature along with P et CO 2 on cognitive function across a range of domains. Eleven males completed a randomized, single-blinded protocol consisting of poikilocapnia (POIKI, no P et CO 2 control) or isocapnia (ISO, P et CO 2 maintained at baseline levels) during passive heating using a water-perfused suit (water temperature ~ 49°C) while middle cerebral artery velocity (MCA v ) was measured continuously as an index of cerebral blood flow. Cognitive testing was completed at baseline, neutral core-hot skin (37.0 ± 0.2°C-37.4 ± 0.3°C), hot core-hot skin (38.6 ± 0.3°C-38.7 ± 0.2°C), and hot core-cooled skin (38.5 ± 0.3°C-34.7 ± 0.6°C). The cognitive test battery consisted of a detection task (psychomotor processing), 2-back task (working memory), set-shifting and Groton Maze Learning Task (executive function). At hot core-hot skin, poikilocapnia led to significant (both p < 0.05) decreases in P et CO 2 (∆−21%) and MCA v (∆−26%) from baseline, while isocapnia clamped P et CO 2 (∆ + 4% from baseline) leading to a significantly ( p = 0.023) higher MCA v (∆−18% from baseline) compared to poikilocapnia. There were no significant differences in errors made on any task (all p > 0.05) irrespective of skin temperature or P et CO 2 manipulation. We conclude that neither skin temperature nor P et CO 2 maintenance significantly alter cognitive function during passive hyperthermia.

Abstract:Introduction: Noninvasive temperature modulation by localized neck cooling might be desirable in the prehospital phase of acute hypoxic brain injuries. While combined head and neck cooling induces significant discomfort, peripheral vasoconstriction, and blood pressure increase, localized neck cooling more selectively targets blood vessels that supply the brain, spares thermal receptors of the face and skull, and might therefore cause less discomfort cardiovascular side effects compared to head- and neck cooling. The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of noninvasive selective neck cooling on cardiovascular parameters and cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV). Methods: Eleven healthy persons (6 women, mean age 42 ± 11 years) underwent 90 min of localized dorsal and frontal neck cooling (EMCOOLS Brain.Pad™) without sedation. Before and after cooling onset, and after every 10 min of cooling, we determined rectal, tympanic, and neck skin temperatures. Before and after cooling onset, after 60- and 90-min cooling, we monitored RR intervals (RRI), systolic, diastolic blood pressures (BPsys, BPdia), laser Doppler skin blood flow (SBF) at the index finger pulp, and CBFV at the proximal middle cerebral artery (MCA). We compared values before and during cooling by analysis of variance for repeated measurements with post hoc analysis (significance: p < 0.05). Results: Neck skin temperature dropped significantly by 9.2 ± 4.5 °C (minimum after 40 min), while tympanic temperature decreased by only 0.8 ± 0.4 °C (minimum after 50 min), and rectal temperature by only 0.2 ± 0.3 °C (minimum after 60 min of cooling). Index finger SBF decreased (by 83.4 ± 126.0 PU), BPsys and BPdia increased (by 11.2 ± 13.1 mmHg and 8.0 ± 10.1 mmHg), and heart rate slowed significantly while MCA-CBFV remained unchanged during cooling. Conclusions: While localized neck cooling prominently lowered neck skin temperature, it had little effect on tympanic temperature but significantly increased BP which may have detrimental effects in patients with acute brain injuries.
Assessment of Antishivering Medication Requirements During Therapeutic Normothermia: Effect of Cooling Methods

Abstract:Shivering during targeted temperature management (TTM) should be minimized because it can cause cerebral and metabolic stress. It has been proposed that surface cooling (SC) may result in more shivering than endovascular cooling (EC) methods. The purpose of this study was to compare antishivering medication requirements and degree of shivering in these groups during TTM to Normothermia (NT). This was a retrospective single-center cohort study of patients treated with protocolized TTM through SC and EC methods to achieve NT (37.0-37.5°C). The number of interventions and daily dose of antishivering medications, per institutional protocol, were compared between the two groups. The intensity of shivering was assessed with the Bedside Shivering Assessment Scale. Patients in the EC group (n = 23) had more antishivering interventions per patient day than those in the SC group (n = 43) (3.28 vs. 2.67, p = 0.002). Acetaminophen (81% vs. 59%, p < 0.001), buspirone (75% vs. 53%, p < 0.001), and magnesium infusions (52% vs. 36%, p = 0.012) were used on more patient days in the EC group. Patients treated with SC required more patient days of propofol (35% vs. 19%, p = 0.006) and higher average dexmedetomidine dosing per patient-day (0.70 vs. 0.56 μg/[kg·h], p = 0.03). Dosing of other medications was similar. There were no observed differences in degree or intensity of shivering. In our cohort, patients in EC group required more antishivering interventions, but less sedation, during TTM than patients in SC group. Optimizing nonsedating medications, such as acetaminophen, buspirone, and magnesium infusions, may decrease the requirement for sedatives to control shivering in both SC and EC.
[Hemodynamic study of hepatocellular carcinoma nodules by multi-slice spiral computed tomographic perfusion].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To analyze the 64-slice computed tomographic (CT) perfusion parameters of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) nodule so as to assess the diagnostic value of hemodynamic changes of HCC nodule by this perfusion technique. METHODS Forty volunteers without liver disease (control subjects) and 37 HCC patients (experimental group) were selected. After informed consents, all of them underwent plain, perfusion and contrast CT examinations. Perfusion CT scan was performed at 120 kV, 60 mA and a thickness of up to 40 mm. The injection rate of contrast medium was 4 - 5 ml/sec at a dose of 1.0 ml/kg body weight. And 50 seconds of continuous scanning time was set at 5 seconds post-injection. The indices were 1 second per 360° revolution, 5 mm slice thickness image reconstruction and a matrix size of 512×512 pixels. Perfusion parameters associated with changes in hepatic blood flow included blood flow (HBF), hepatic blood volume (HBV), hepatic arterial perfusion index (HAI), hepatic artery perfusion (HAP) and portal venous perfusion (HPP). Perfusion parameters were measured thrice at each time point for each different region of interest (ROI): hepatic parenchyma surrounding HCC nodule, HCC nodule and normal liver parenchyma(control group). RESULTS For HCC nodule, the increased levels of HBF, HAP and HAI were significantly differentiated from normal liver parenchyma of control group (P < 0.01). Increased HBV and decreased HPP had no difference from control group (P > 0.05). Higher levels of HAP, HPP and HAI in HCC nodules were differentiated from hepatic parenchyma surrounding HCC nodules (P < 0.05). HBV decreased and HBF increased in HCC nodule. But it had no differences from hepatic parenchyma surrounding HCC nodule (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Perfusion CT may visualize the status of liver blood flow caused by HCC nodule so as to serve as a new tool of studying the hemodynamic changes of HCC nodules.
Early prognostic significance of umbilical cord troponin I in critically ill newborns. Prospective study with a control group

Abstract:Abstract Aim: To determine the value of cord blood cardiac troponin I levels (cTnI) as an early prognostic factor in critically ill newborns, and to compare cord cTnI levels with the prognostic value of the score for neonatal acute physiology (SNAP). Methods: Cord arterial samples were collected routinely for blood gas analysis, and cord venous samples for cTnI and cardiac-specific creatine kinase assay. The study group (n=109) comprised critically ill newborns who required mechanical ventilation. The control group (n=96) comprised newborns who were either completely healthy (n=48) or were followed in a level I neonatal care unit due to moderate-severity problems. Results: The critically ill newborns had significantly higher cTnI levels than control babies (median [min-max] 1.4 [0–13] vs. 0 [0–1.8] ng/mL, respectively; P<0.001). In critically ill newborns, non-survivors had significantly higher cTnI levels than survivors (median [min-max] 6.6 [1.3–13.0] vs. 1.3 [0–8.0] ng/mL, respectively; P<0.001). Receiver-operator curve analysis revealed that, compared with SNAP, cTnI was a more sensitive predictor of mortality in critically ill newborns (area under curve=0.96; 95% CI=0.90–1.02). Conclusion: Significantly elevated cord cTnI may be a valuable predictor of mortality in critically ill newborns.
Increased skin wetness independently augments cool-seeking behaviour during passive heat stress

Abstract:Key points: Skin wetness occurring secondary to the build-up of sweat on the skin provokes thermal discomfort, the precursor to engaging in cool-seeking behaviour. Associative evidence indicates that skin wetness stimulates cool-seeking behaviour to a greater extent than increases in core and mean skin temperatures. The independent contribution of skin wetness to cool-seeking behaviour during heat stress has never been established. We demonstrate that skin wetness augments cool-seeking behaviour during passive heat stress independently of differential increases in skin temperature and core temperature. We also identify that perceptions of skin wetness were not elevated despite increases in actual skin wetness. These data support the proposition that afferent signalling from skin wetness enhances the desire to engage in cool-seeking behaviour during passive heat stress. The trials involved a 20 min baseline period (26 ± 3% relative humidity (RH)), 60 min while ambient humidity was maintained at 26±3% RH (LOW) or increased to 67 ± 5% RH (HIGH), followed by 60 min passive heat stress (HS) where the water temperature in the suit was incrementally increased to 50 °C. Subjects were able to seek cooling when their neck was thermally uncomfortable by pressing a button. Each button press initiated 30 s of -20 °C fluid perfusing through a custom-made device secured against the skin on the dorsal neck. Mean skin (Tskin ) and core (Tcore ) temperatures, mean skin wetness (Wskin ) and neck device temperature (Tdevice ) were measured continuously. Cool-seeking behaviour was determined from total time receiving cooling (TTcool ) and cumulative button presses. Tskin and Tcore increased during HS (P < 0.01) but were not different between conditions (P ≥ 0.11). Wskin was elevated in HIGH vs. LOW during HS (60 min: by + 0.06 ± 0.07 a.u., P ≤ 0.04). Tdevice was lower in HIGH vs. LOW at 40-50 min of HS (P ≤ 0.01). TTcool was greater for HIGH (330 ± 172 s) vs. LOW (225 ± 167 s, P < 0.01), while the number of cumulative button presses was greater from 40-60 min in HS for HIGH vs. LOW (P ≤ 0.04). Increased skin wetness amplifies the engagement in cool-seeking behaviour during passive heat stress.
Effect of reflex and mechanical decreases in skin blood flow on exogenous cholinergic‐induced eccrine sweating in humans

Abstract:Human skin blood flow (SkBF) and sweating increase concurrently during increases in skin sympathetic nerve activity and subsequent neurotransmitter release to these cutaneous appendages. Previous studies have blocked sweating without affecting SkBF with the use of the muscarinic agonist atropine, but few have altered SkBF without affecting sweating because standard methods such as introducing an α‐adrenergic agonist decrease SkBF but also can engage eccrine sweat gland receptors. Thus, this study aimed to utilize non‐adrenergic mechanical perturbations to decrease SkBF during intradermal perfusion of a cholinergic agonist. Three intradermal microdialysis fibers were placed in dorsal forearm skin of 4 women and 3 men (age 24±1 yr, height 173±4 cm, weight 80±8 kg) to perfuse 2 doses of pilocarpine nitrate (0.01 and 1.66 mg/ml, corresponding to the ED50 and EMAX from previous dose‐response modeling) or the vehicle (lactated Ringer's). Forearm SkBF (laser‐Doppler flowmetry) was decreased for 3 min by engaging the venoarteriolar response (arm lowered ~30 cm from heart level; CVAR), venoarteriolar response plus decreased perfusion pressure (venous occlusion by proximal cuff inflation; CVAR with ΔPP), and ischemia (arterial occlusion by proximal cuff inflation); sweat rate was measured by perfusing anhydrous medical air through a ventilated capsule (capacitance hygrometry). Drug infusions significantly increased SkBF (+87±18 and +57±16 units) and sweating (+0.37±0.20 and +0.64±0.15 mg/ml/min, for pilocarpine ED50 and EMAX, respectively) compared to vehicle control in which SkBF minimally increased (+8±4 units) and there was no alteration in sweating (−0.02±0.09). Decreased SkBF was observed with CVAR (−26±14, −33±9, and −38±9%), CVAR with ΔPP (−62±7, −42±20 and −61±8%), and ischemia (−99±1, −92±5 and −93±2% for pilocarpine ED50, pilocarpine EMAX, and vehicle control, respectively). Despite these significant decreases in SkBF, changes in eccrine sweat rate were minimal (CVAR = −1±12, +3±3, and −2±5%; CVAR with ΔPP = +3±7, −2±4, and −3±4%; and ischemia = +5±10, +5±5, and +6±5% for pilocarpine ED50, pilocarpine EMAX, and vehicle control, respectively). These data suggest that very acute decreases in SkBF do not proportionally decrease cholinergic‐induced sweating in human forearm skin. This abstract is from the Experimental Biology 2018 Meeting. Abstract:The ability to fabricate nanometer-sized structures that are stable in air has the potential to contribute significantly to the advancement of new nanotechnologies and our understanding of nanoscale systems. Laser light can be used to control the motion of atoms on a nanoscopic scale. Chromium atoms were focused by a standing-wave laser field as they deposited onto a silicon substrate. The resulting nanostructure consisted of a series of narrow lines covering 0.4 millimeter by 1 millimeter. Atomic force microscopy measurements showed a line width of 65 � 6 nanometers, a spacing of 212.78 nanometers, and a height of 34 �+ 10 nanometers. The observed line widths and shapes are compared with the predictions of a semiclassical atom optical model.

Abstract:This paper reports on studies of the effect of temperature step-change (between a cool and a neutral environment) on human thermal sensation and skin temperature. Experiments with three temperature conditions were carried out in a climate chamber during the period in winter. Twelve subjects participated in the experiments simulating moving inside and outside of rooms or cabins with air conditioning. Skin temperatures and thermal sensation were recorded. Results showed overshoot and asymmetry of TSV due to the step-change. Skin temperature changed immediately when subjects entered a new environment. When moving into a neutral environment from cool, dynamic thermal sensation was in the thermal comfort zone and overshoot was not obvious. Air-conditioning in a transitional area should be considered to limit temperature difference to not more than 5°C to decrease the unacceptability of temperature step-change. The linear relationship between thermal sensation and skin temperature or gradient of skin temperature does not apply in a step-change environment. There is a significant linear correlation between TSV and Qloss in the transient environment. Heat loss from the human skin surface can be used to predict dynamic thermal sensation instead of the heat transfer of the whole human body.
