[Development of a Reward Scale for Hospital Nurses]

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to develop and test a reward scale for hospital nurses. Methods: The initial items were identified through a literature review and focus group interviews with ten hospital nurses. The content validity of the items was evaluated by ten experts. Fifty-one items were derived from the pilot survey. Four hundred eighty-eight nurses participated in the study: 248 for exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and 240 confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Data were analyzed using item analysis, EFA, CFA, convergent validity, known-group validity, and internal consistency using IBM SPSS Statistics 29.0 and IBM SPSS AMOS 29.0. Results: The final scale consisted of 31 items and eight factors (decent wage, opportunity to grow and develop, support for special situations, various benefits, flexibility of work, job-related achievement, reflecting career and performance, and recognition), which explained 67.3% of the total variance. The eight-subscale model was validated by CFA. Convergent validity was evaluated by analyzing correlation with intention to leave (r = -.63, p < .001) and job satisfaction (r = .54, p < .001). The known-group validity was evaluated by comparing the reward scales according to age, clinical career, income level and hospital type. The scale was found to be reliable with a Cronbach's α of .89. Conclusion: Both the validity and reliability of the reward scale for hospital nurses are verified, which can enhance the understanding of the range of rewards and may assist nurse managers in establishing an effective reward system.
Measuring the Nursing Work Environment in Mainland China

Abstract:For the stabilization of the nursing profession in mainland China, a valid and reliable nursing work environment instrument, grounded in China's context, should be developed to better provide rigorous evidence for policy makers.The purpose of the current research was to further develop a scale that could capture the characteristics of the nursing work environment in mainland China.A convenience sample of 542 nurses employed in a tertiary hospital of mainland China completed the 108-item Chinese Nursing Work Environment (C-NWE) Scale (1st ed.). Items that did not differentiate between respondents with the highest and lowest 27% of total scores and those that did not meet criteria for factor loadings were set aside. Exploratory factor analysis based on the maximum likelihood method was used to identify the structure of the scale. The chi-square test was used to evaluate model fit, and expert review was conducted to test content validity. Reliability was estimated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient.The revised C-NWE Scale, which consists of nine subscales and 47 items, is a simplified version of the C-NWE (1st ed.). Using exploratory maximum likelihood factor analysis, the normed chi-square fit index for a nine-factor solution was 1.97. The content validity index for the total scale was 0.93; Cronbach's alpha was .94.Initial evidence of the psychometric properties of C-NWE scores was presented. Further studies could be conducted in various settings to identify the C-NWE Scale's validity and reliability.
Development and Validation of the Therapeutic Communication Scale in Nursing Students

Abstract:This study aimed to develop and validate a scale for measuring the therapeutic communication of nursing students. The scale development and evaluation study was conducted based on the scale development guidelines of DeVellis. A 47-item instrument was developed based on a review of the literature and interviews with 16 experts. Content validity was evaluated by ten nursing scholars, and the number of items was reduced to 35. The scale was administered to 352 nursing students from three regions in South Korea in 2022. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were performed on the scale items. Convergent validity, discriminant validity, and internal consistency reliability of the scale were evaluated. The factor analysis resulted in 15 items and two factors: relationship building and problem solving. Confirmatory factor analysis and evaluation of convergent and discriminant validity provided support for the validity of the two-factor Therapeutic Communication Scale in nursing students. The total scale demonstrated good internal consistency, with a McDonald's omega (ω) of 0.89. The Therapeutic Communication Scale is a reliable and valid measure that can be used to assess nursing students' therapeutic communication competence related to patient-centered nursing and provide foundational data to improve such skills.

Abstract:The use of organizational silence has been described as an active and conscious action employed to deliberately withhold information about an organization. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of nurses' communication practices and personality traits on organizational silence behaviors. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 220 nurses. The survey contained questions concerning nurses’ individual/professional characteristics and their choices about whether or not to remain silent about issues in the workplace and it also contained the Organizational Silence Behavior Scale and the Ten-Item Personality Inventory. Descriptive statistics, and regression analyses were used to analyze the data. Nurses’ mean score of the Organizational Silence Behavior Scale was 2.6 (.81). Multiple regression analysis indicated that nurses' organizational silence behavior was negatively affected by the choice to remain silent when their relationships with colleagues were put at risk, when they felt they may be excluded if they expressed their opinions, when they did not believe that sharing their ideas would improve the unit, and when their personality trait was determined to be emotionally stable. Organizational silence behavior is influenced by the choice to remain silent and an emotionally stable personality type.

Abstract:Objective: Measuring instruments play, namely, an important role in the safety and quality of care. The aim of this study consists in validating a scale conceived to evaluate the structure of the operating room (OR). Materials and Methods: Validation and psychometric evaluation were carried out of the instrument. The sample was comprised of 1019 professionals working in the OR for at least two years in 71 Portuguese hospitals; the research was conducted in 2017. Results: The results obtained in the reliability and validity tests reveal good internal consistency. The 28 items of the scale, and after the principal components analysis, were grouped into seven dimensions: “Environment and equipment”, “Resources for quality and safety”, “Circuits in the operating room”, “Facilities and operating requirements”, “Training and praxis in the operating room”, “Continuity in nursing care”, and “Specificities of professional groups”. Conclusion: The psychometric study allows us to state that the scale of structure indicators in the operating room (SIOR) is a reliable and valid instrument. Its use will permit evaluating and monitoring the structural conditions of the ORs.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the validity and reliability of an organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) scale for nurses in China. Methods: Totally 317 nurses were recruited by purposive sampling method and investigated by nurses’ OCB scale designed by the authors during the early study and 34 nurses were involved in a 2-week test-retest survey. Exploratory factor analysis, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability analysis were conducted. Results: Through 9 times of exploratory factor analysis, 8 items were deleted and 24 items were reserved. We extracted 5 factors which were self-development, responsibility consciousness, actively serving, helping colleagues, and organizational identity. The cumulative variance explanation rate of these 5 factors was 64.14%, and each item’s loading value ranged from 0.513 to 0.814. The Cronbach's a coefifcients of the overall scale and 5 factors were 0.934, 0.897, 0.813, 0.802, 0.813, and 0.809, respectively. The test-retest coefifcient was 0.74 (P<0.001). Conclusion: The 24-item OCB scale for nurses based on 9 times of exploratory factor analysis has good construct validity, internal consistency and test-retest stability.
Development and Validation of an Instrument to Measure Barriers to Surgical Conscience Action in Perioperative Nurses

Abstract:Background: Surgical conscience is a concept well known to perioperative nurses, yet it is rarely studied. The purpose of this study was to develop and psychometrically validate an original instrument called the Surgical Conscience Scale with perioperative nurses. Methods: The Surgical Conscience Scale was designed after a review of the literature, the creation of a concept analysis, content validity, and pilot testing. Validity was explored by an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with separate groups of participants. Results: EFA results explained 55% of the variance with three factors: Foundational Components, Barriers to Surgical Conscience Action, and Required Attributes. The CFA findings did not support goodness-of-fit indices in total; however, a valid and reliable subscale was discovered that measures barriers to using one's surgical conscience. This six-item scale, now referred to as the Barriers to Surgical Conscience Action Scale, had all six items of this factor (.734, .754, .806, .689, and .573) with strong loadings (>.5). Additionally, a good reliability coefficient of the subscale (α = .874) supports the recommendation to use this subscale on its own to measure barriers of surgical conscience. Conclusion: The use of the Barriers to Surgical Conscience Action Scale can promote awareness about the harmful consequences of failed action on behalf of perioperative nurses and help promote proficient surgical conscience usage.
Factors related to the organizational silence of Korean nurses: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to identify the variables related to the organizational silence of Korean hospital nurses and to examine the effect sizes of correlations between the related variables and sub-types of organizational silence.Methods: Relevant studies were searched through a systematic search in six Korean electronic databases (RISS, ScienceON, KCI, DBpia, e-Article, and KISS) using June 2022 as the end date. Thirteen studies were identified through a systematic review and eight of them were meta-analyzed. The correlation effect size r (ESr) for each related variable was calculated.Results: Twenty-two related variables were identified from the systematic review. Of them, organizational culture was the most frequently examined. Seven variables (three organizational, two leader-member exchange, and two consequences of organizational silence) were found eligible for the meta-analysis. The intention of turnover (ESr=.39; 95% confidence interval, 95% CI=.32 to .45) and leader-member exchange (“manager’s leaderships” ESr=-.33, 95% CI= -.43 to -.21; “manager’s inclination to reject negative feedback” ESr=.32, 95% CI=.23 to .39) had larger correlation effect sizes than the other variables that related to organizational silence, in particular, acquiescent silence, which had the largest correlation effect size among the three sub-types of organizational silence.Conclusion: These findings show that the intention of turnover and leader-member exchanges were the main factors that related to the organizational silence. This indicates that it is necessary to develop management and education programs, as well as communication systems that focus on reducing and managing organizational silence, especially acquiescent silence.

Abstract:Background: Given increases in China's aging population, the growing demand for public health services and the shortage of human resources among nurses have become more prominent. Under such a background, "Internet + Nursing Services" have received more attention. Thus, exploring the barriers to and facilitators of nurses' willingness to participate in "Internet + Nursing Services" and utilizing internet technology to increase the supply of nursing services has become a key issue. Objective: This study aimed to develop a scale for assessing the barriers to and facilitators of nurses' willingness to participate in "Internet + Nursing Services" and to test the validity and reliability of the scale. Methods: A preliminary scale was developed based on a literature review, theoretical research, semistructured qualitative interviews, and two rounds of Delphi expert inquiry. A convenient sampling method was used for the questionnaire survey. A 5-point Likert scale was used to evaluate the importance of the items. The survey data of 659 clinical nurses obtained from February to March 2023 were used for item analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and reliability and validity tests of the scale. The survey data of 538 clinical nurses obtained in April 2023 were used for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the final scale. Results: The final scale consists of 25 items and 4 dimensions (performance expectations, perceived risk, need for professional knowledge training, and nonprofessional knowledge training). The scale showed good structural validity and content validity: the Cronbach's α coefficient of the scale was 0.955, the split-half reliability was 0.778, the test-retest reliability was 0.944, the kaiser-meyer-olkin(KMO) value was 0.960, and the cumulative variance contribution rate of the 4 common factors was 83.147%. The scale content validity index(S-CVI) was 0.914. The confirmatory factor analysis model had favorable fit indices: χ2/df = 4.234, RMSEA = 0.078, NFI = 0.940, IFI = 0.953, TLI = 0.947, and CFI = 0.953. Conclusion: The scale for assessing the barriers to and facilitators of nurses' willingness to participate in "Internet + Nursing Services" has good reliability and validity, and provides a reference for evaluating nurses' willingness to participate in "Internet + Nursing Services".
Development and psychometric testing of the nursing practice difficulty scale for nurses caring for patients with dementia in general hospitals

Abstract:Objective: As aging in the Chinese population increases, the hospitalization rates of patients with dementia have also risen. Research on the difficulties of nurses who care for patients with dementia in Chinese general hospitals is limited. This study aimed to develop a scale to measure the difficulties nurses face in nursing patients with dementia in Chinese general hospitals and to verify its reliability and validity. Methods: Guided by the biopsychosocial theory, an initial scale was created through a literature review, qualitative interviews, and expert consultation. A web-based survey for psychometric testing was conducted with 394 nurses from 11 general hospitals during September to November 2021. Validity was verified using content validity, exploratory factor analysis, the known-groups method, and concurrent validity. Cronbach's α coefficient and split-half reliability were used to assess reliability. Results: The Item-level Content Validity Index was 0.833-1.000. The Scale-level Content Validity Index was 0.929. Twenty-one items with four factors were extracted from the item analysis and exploratory factor analysis. According to the known-groups method, the difficulty of the experienced group and the group with training experience was significantly lower than that of the less experienced group and the group without training experience. Based on external standards, the correlation coefficient was 0.387 with the Nursing Job Stress Scale and -0.239 with the Dementia Care Attitude Scale. Cronbach's α coefficient for each factor ranged from 0.889 to 0.905, and the total was 0.959. The split-half reliability for each factor ranged from 0.814 to 0.894, and the total was 0.911. Conclusion: This study discovered a four-factor structure related to the difficulty scale of dementia nursing practice, and the scale's reliability and validity were confirmed. The scale can be utilized to assess the difficulty of dementia nursing practice in general hospitals and may be employed in future research to improve dementia nursing practices.

Abstract:Background and objectives Nurses tend to exhibit higher rates of presenteeism compared to other professions. Presenteeism can cause the work performance of nurses to suffer, jeopardizing their own and their patients’ safety and leading to decreased quality of care and increased risks of errors. However, there is a lack of a validated assessment tool for presenteeism in Taiwan. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop a Nursing Staff Presenteeism Scale (NSPS). Methods To develop questionnaire items, participants from three medical centers in Taiwan were recruited. Through convenience sampling, 500 nurses who met the selection criteria were recruited from November 1, 2022 to January 18, 2023. The scale was developed based on a systematic literature review, a previous study, and expert consultation, and 50 items were initially generated. After removing three items that lacked discriminative power, the reliability and validity of the remaining 47 items were evaluated. An exploratory factor analysis was used to establish the construct validity. A confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling for cross-validation were used to assess relationships of factors with items and the overall NSPS. Results The final scale consisted of 44 items assessed on a five-point Likert scale that loaded onto three different factors of physical or mental discomfort (18 items), work performance (15 items), and predisposing factors (11 items). These three factors were found to explain 63.14% of the cumulative variance. Cronbach’s alpha for the overall final scale was 0.953. The item-to-total correlation coefficients ranged 0.443 to 0.795. Conclusions The NSPS exhibited satisfactory reliability and validity. It can be applied to assess the level of presenteeism among clinical nurses and provide medical institutions with information regarding the causes of presenteeism, predisposing factors, and the impacts of presenteeism on their work performance to enhance the safety and quality of clinical care.

Abstract:AIM: To examine the reliability and validity of a Korean version of the Humanism Scale Short Form.DESIGN: A cross-sectional descriptive design.METHODS: This study involved 191 nurses in Korea. Data were collected from 1 May to 30 June 2019. Bilingual nursing professionals translated the scale into Korean, and reverse translation was performed. Validity and reliability were assessed, and the correlation coefficients of the developed scale were compared with those of the Korean version of the Empathy Quotient Scale and Compassion Competence Scale to evaluate concurrent validity.RESULTS: Exploratory factor analysis with 15 items showed that two factors (human equality and respect for human beings) explained 50.86% of the variance. Cronbach's alpha for the overall scale was 0.88. Thus, the scale has acceptable reliability and validity. Humanism measures can predict a nurse's approach to holistic care and provide fundamental data for developing programs to improve integrated caring capacities.

Abstract:Objective To translate and test the reliability and validity of JSE-HP (the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Heahh Professionals) ( Nursing student edition ). MethodsOriginal edition of JSE-HP was translated, back translated, first tested and pre-surveyed by cross-cultural adaptation process. 229 practical nursing students from six advanced nursing schools coming from five places in China were surveyed after formal Chinese edition was formed, and reliability and validity of the scale was tested. Results Cronbach' s α of the scale was 0.836, split-half reliability was 0. 830, cumulative contribution rate was 48. 196％ after three conunon factors was extracted, Cronbach' s α of three dimensions were 0. 866, O. 767 and 0. 705 respectively.Relationship between the dimensions and total score was in 0. 613 -0. 872, and relationship among all the dimensions were in 0. 346 -0. 546. Conclusions JSE-HP ( Chinese edition) ( Nursing student edition) had a good reliability and validity, and could be used as an effective assessing tooh in nursing students in our country.

Abstract:Background Levels of self-awareness may affect the decision-making ability of clinical nurses and may also be related to mental health. Therefore, it is crucial to develop tools to identify nurses’ level of self-awareness. The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability and validity of a short scale among Chinese nurses and to explore the factors associated with nurses’ self-awareness. Methods A total of 957 participants were recruited, 549 participants were used for reliability tests and 408 subjects were used for impact factor studies. They completed the General Information Questionnaire, the Self-Awareness Scale for Nurses, and the Psychological Distress Scale. Exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, Cronbach’s alpha, and retest reliability were used to investigate the psychometric properties of the Self-Awareness Scale for Nurses. Multiple regression analyses were used in this study to investigate the relationship between nurses’ self-awareness and the independent variables. Results A 4-factor model of the Chinese version of the Self-Awareness Scale for Nurses was validated. The overall Cronbach’s alpha value for the Chinese version of the Self-Awareness Scale for Nurses was 0.873. Cronbach’s alpha values for each subscale ranged from 0.808 to 0.979. Significant predictors of each dimension of the Self-awareness and the total score of the scale were age and work experience. Conclusion The Chinese version of the Self-Awareness Scale for Nurses is a valid and reliable scale.

Abstract:Objective To measure the construct validity of the Nurses' Job Satisfaction Scale(Chinese version). Method Six hundred and thirty-two nurses were conveniently recruited from hospitals in Beijing and 512 nurses completed the Nurses' Job Satisfaction Scale,yielding a response rate of 80%.Factor analysis was used to measure the construct validity of the scale.Result The Nurses' Job Satisfaction Scale comprised of two factors: working status(Factor One) and the inter-personal relationship at work(Factor Two).Conclusion The Nurses' Job Satisfaction Scale has acceptable construct validity.It is suggested that the construct validity measurement is essential before the application of the scale.
