Abstract:Contaminants of heavy metals and antibiotics, which are frequently detected in water, soil and food chains with increasing prevalence in our current society, can cause potential harm to human health and disrupt human ecosystem irreversibly. Herein, we have successfully utilized biomass waste ferns contaminated by iron mines, to fabricate a first-of-its-kind high-performance class of Fe single-atom catalysts (FeSAC) by a facile pyrolysis. The optimal FeSAC-800 shows an excellent efficiency in the fast-photocatalytic degradation of six types of quinolone antibiotics (e.g., norfloxacin, levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, lomefloxacin, flumequine) in 1 h under the simulated natural light irradiation. Based on advanced characterization, a well-defined structure of FeN4, confined in the porous carbon is elaborated for the FeSAC-800. Mechanism of the photodegradation is via a Fenton-like oxidation process whereas the reactive oxygen species play a key role. These findings open a new avenue for efficient, sustainable utilization of biomass waste in pollutant control.

Abstract:Antibiotic contamination has become an environmental problem that cannot be ignored, and there is an endless demand for high performance advanced oxidation technologies to efficiently remove antibiotics from wastewater. Iron (II) phthalocyanine (FePc) with monoatomic dispersed iron sites has great potential for Fenton-like catalysis, but its tendency to aggregate in aqueous environments leads to self-degradation, poor electrical conductivity, and masking of active centers, which severely limits its practice application. Herein, aiming at these disadvantages, a novel FePc/g-C 3 N 4 (CNFP)/H 2 O 2 photo-Fenton system was constructed. In CNFP, the highly dispersed FePc on g-C 3 N 4 not only avoided the self-degradation caused by high aggregation, but also provided more active centers. Additionally, the π-π interaction between FePc and g-C 3 N 4 formed a quick-speed electron transfer routeway, which enabled the fast transfer of photogenerated electrons. g-C 3 N 4 as a photocatalytic center can continuously provide photogenerated electrons for FePc to realize the rapid regeneration of Fe(II). In CNFP/H 2 O 2 photo-Fenton system, the coexistence of radicals and non-radicals (OH, O 2 − , h + , and 1 O 2 ) enhanced the anti-interference ability. The self-degradation analysis showed that FePc had obvious self-degradation in the photo-Fenton process, while CNFP had no self-degradation. Furthermore, the CNFP/H 2 O 2 photo-Fenton system was carefully evaluated by pH effect, ions effect, toxicity assessment, and cycling experiments, revealing its application potential in practical wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Electro-Fenton (EF) technology emerges as a promising approach to address the treatment of persistent organic pollutants. Nevertheless, its practical implementation often comes with certain drawbacks, like the low H 2 O 2 activation efficiency, poor pH adaptability, and difficult recycling of the catalysts. To this end, we introduced highly active Fe-N-C sites onto the surface of nitrogen-doped graphene, improved the chemical environment of its central Fe atoms with Fe/Fe 3 C nanoparticles, effectively regulated the multi-electron oxygen reduction process of the catalyst in the electrochemical reaction, and realized the efficient production and activation of H 2 O 2 in the electro-Fenton process. The synthesized Fe/Fe 3 C@FeNG-1000 achieved efficient removal of refractory organic pollutants in neutral conditions. The rate constant of degradation for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) in the electro-Fenton reaction system at pH 7 was recorded as 0.1011 min −1 . Additionally, a removal rate of 67.4% for total organic carbon (TOC) was achieved in just 120 min. The treatment of actual wastewater also showed excellent performance, with an average specific energy consumption of 6.16 kWh kg −1 COD −1 . Fe/Fe 3 C@FeNG-1000 can still achieve more than 90% degradation efficiency after 5 consecutive cycles of the experiment, showing excellent stability, and the catalyst can be conveniently retrieved via magnetic methods following the reaction. The results show that the Fe/Fe 3 C@FeNG-1000-EF system has a wide range of pH applicability, long-term stability and good recyclability, has a good application value in practical wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Photocatalytic wastewater purification is essential for environmental remediation, but rapid carrier recombination and limited oxidative capacity hinder progress. This study proposes an innovative strategy by integrating homogeneous and heterogeneous electron acceptors into a g-C3N4-based photocatalytic system, significantly enhancing the multipath utilization of photogenerated electrons. A novel Fe3O4@P-C3N4 was developed to activate an advanced peroxymonosulfate-assisted photocatalysis (PAP) system, achieving complete degradation and significant mineralization of tetracycline (TC) in real water environments, outperforming others reported in the last five years. Phytic acid, as a key precursor, modifies the hollow tubular morphology and introduces phosphorus (P) heteroatoms as electronic trapping centers, enhancing the visible light response and carrier separation, thereby promoting the Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle and the formation of reactive species. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations pinpointed TC's vulnerable sites and synergically identified reactive species, revealing almost non-toxic degradation processes. Moreover, the recyclable magnetic Fe3O4@P-C3N4/PAP system demonstrates practical application potential and leaching stability in cyclic and continuous testing. This study offers unique insights into the strategic design of photocatalysts and catalytic environments, potentially advancing practical wastewater remediation.
Effective Heterogeneous Fenton-Like Degradation of Antibiotics by Ferroferric Oxide Nanoparticle Coated Reduced Iron Powder with Accelerated Fe(II)/Fe(III) Redox Cycling

Abstract:Heterogeneous Fenton-like process based on Fe-based catalysts is an effective technology to degrade the emerging organic pollutants in the water and wastewater such as tetracycline (TC). However, the kinetically limited redox cycling between Fe2+ and Fe3+ is still a persistent challenge for its widespread application. To address this issue, we designed a novel Fe-based catalyst by coating reduced iron powder (RIP) with ferroferric oxide nanoparticles (FONP@RIP) using a simple chemical co-precipitation method. The reduced iron could rapidly reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II) and accelerate the cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III) in the heterogenous Fenton-like system. Benefiting from the accelerated cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III), TC could be efficiently degraded in the FONP@RIP/H2O2 system over a wide pH range 3-6, with a removal efficiency of 94.5% within 60 min. The predominant reactive oxygen species were identified as •OH and HO2•. Based on the identified intermediates, the possible pathway of TC degradation was deduced and the toxicity of pollutants could also be significantly reduced during the degradation process. Moreover, FONP@RIP exhibited stable catalytic performance during the multiple cyclic tests with only a marginal loss of catalytic components. This study presents a new design strategy of catalyst for heterogeneous Fenton-like processes, which provides a promising way for the degradation of residual antibiotics in water and wastewater.

Abstract:Photocatalysis-self-Fenton combining photocatalytic production of H2O2 with Fenton reaction has been a hotspot, but the pH limitation and iron sludge production problems remain unsolved. Herein, we proposed a self-fenton system based on N-doped carbon dots modified ZnIn2S4 (NCDs@ZnIn2S4) composites that exhibits effective degradation of antibiotics under neutral pH using low amounts of Fe2+. The decoration of ZnIn2S4 with NCDs significantly increased the surface area, visible light absorption, charge transfer ability and oxygen adsorption ability. NCDs@ZnIn2S4 composites exhibited a high H2O2 production rate (1528 μM g-1•h-1) under visible light, which was 1.9 and 5.3 times higher than ZnIn2S4 and NCDs, respectively. Meanwhile, the Fe2+/NCDs@ZnIn2S4 system with a low concentration of Fe2+(1 mg/L) could remove over 95% levofloxacin and oxytetracycline within 30 min. Interestingly, the highest degradation efficiency occurred under neutral pH. Quenching experiments and analytical measurements indicated that the high catalytic performance under pH = 7 with low amounts of Fe2+ stemmed from the higher amount of inner-generate H2O2 under neutral pH and easy regeneration of Fe2+ by photoinduced electrons for high •OH yields. Additionally, the Fe2+/NCDs@ZnIn2S4 system exhibited high degradation performance under different water matrix and ultrahigh degradation efficiency towards levofloxacin under real sunlight irradiation. The work shows the prospects of photocatalysis-self-Fenton systems for overcoming the pH limitation and the difficulty of iron sludge separation in the purification of effluents.

Abstract:The homogeneous Fenton reaction is limited by its pH requirements for the addition of the iron source and by the safety risks of working with high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) - both of which are major obstacles in the path toward utilizing this reaction for practical applications. In this study, we present a novel heterogeneous photo-self-Fenton system of iron-doped resorcinol formaldehyde (FRF) resin. This system is able to generate and utilize H 2 O 2 in-suit, making it highly efficient at degrading and mineralizing various types of antibiotics (macrolides, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, quinolones) at a neutral pH without the need for additional reagents. Remarkably, the degradation rate constant of oxytetracycline (OTC) increased by 34.2 times compared to the resorcinol formaldehyde (RF) photocatalysis. The enhanced degradation performance of this system is attributed to (i) The Iron-anchored RF, which facilitates the rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons, thereby accelerating the recycling of iron ions and improving the migration and separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. (ii) The heterogeneous photo-self-Fenton reaction using in situ generated H 2 O 2 to produce abundant hydroxyl radicals. Finally, the mechanism of action and the mineralization pathway of OTC were systematically studied. The OTC undergoes demethylation, hydroxylation, and ring-opening and ultimately is completely mineralized to CO 2 and H 2 O. The work provides a new sustainable pathway for extensively constructing heterogeneous photo-self-Fenton systems.

Abstract:Recent years, many scholars have been greatly intrigued by the large amounts of emerging antibiotics pollutants (such as tetracycline, penicillin, etc.) in natural water environments. Photo-Fenton oxidation, a highly advanced oxidation technique, has been seen as a promising way to effectively break down these pollutants by generating a great deal of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein, iron phthalocyanine nanodots (FePc)/ultra-thin porous carbon nitride (UPCN) nanocomposites were successfully prepared by thermal polymerization and calcination processes. In the system with a small amount (10 μL) of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and natural pH conditions, the 1%-FePc/UPCN nanocatalcatalyst had the best degradation effect, and the TC removal rate reached 89% within 20 min and 99% within 60 min. The excellent performance of the nano-composites is ascribed to the large surface area, multiple active sites, small pore size, easy excitation and fast transfers of photogenerated carriers induced by π - π bond. In addition, the improvement of the degradation of TC is also due to the synergistic effect of the photocatalytic reaction center dominated by UPCN and Fenton reaction center dominated by FePc in the system, simultaneously. In this study, a synergistic dual-reaction center catalytic system was constructed to provide new insights and strategies for the degradation of organic pollutants in natural water environments.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) as photo-Fenton-like catalysts have attracted widespread attention in water purification. However, the development of SACs with renewability, cleanliness, high mass loading, and raw material abundance is a formidable challenge to achieve efficient pollutant removal. In this study, we fabricated high-performance Fe-nanocluster embedded biomass-derived carbon (Fe/Bio-C) from Ficus altissima wastes for quinolone antibiotics degradation. The high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy with aberration correction (AC-HAADF-STEM) and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS) revealed that the Fe/Bio-C exhibited a porous structure with abundant Fe-N4 active sites. The Fe/Bio-C catalysts achieved an exceptional efficiency of 98.6 % for the removal of the representative quinolone antibiotic, namely lomefloxacin (LOM), within 30 min. Furthermore, an in-depth exploration was conducted to assess the influence of reaction parameters on degradation performance, kinetics, toxicity, and mechanism. The free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra demonstrated the existence of ·O2 −, 1O2, ·OH, SO4·− in the reaction system and the ·O2 − radicals played a relatively important role in the degradation progress. This work broaden the avenue for constructing metal-nanocluster photocatalysts with the high reactivity, low metal leaching, and universality to various pollutants.

Abstract:Developing efficient and eco-friendly technologies for treating the antibiotic wastewaters is crucial. At present, the catalysts with metal-nitrogen (M-Nx) coordination showed excellent Fenton-like performance but were always difficult to realize practical antibiotics degradation because of their complicated preparation methods and inferior stability. In this work, the Co-Nx configuration was facilely reconstructed on the surface of Co3O4 (Co-Nx/Co3O4), which exhibited superior catalytic activity and stability towards various antibiotics. DFT results indicated that stronger ETP oxidation will be triggered by the electron-donating pollutants since more electrons can be easily migrated from these pollutants to the Co-Nx/Co3O4/PMS complex. The Co-Nx/Co3O4/PMS system could maintain superior oxidation capacity, high catalytic stability and anti-interference due to (i) the strong nonradical ETP oxidation with superior degradation selectivity in Co-Nx/Co3O4/PMS system, and (ii) the synchronously enhanced radical oxidation with high populations of non-selective radicals generated via activating PMS by the Co-Nx/Co3O4. As a result, the synergies of synchronously enhanced dual oxidation pathways guaranteed the self-cleaning properties, maintaining 98 % of activity after eight cycles and stability across a wide pH range. Basically, these findings have significant implications for developing technologies for purifying antibiotic wastewater.
Carbon Nitride-Type Polymers Compounded with FeOCl to Enhance the Catalytic Removal of Antibiotics over a Wide Ph Range: Performance and Mechanism

Abstract:The ubiquity of antibiotics challenges water treatment and public health. Herein, a novel heterogeneous Fenton system was constructed to remove antibiotics, and carbon nitride-type polymers compounded with FeOCl (CNPs/ FeOCl) were used as catalysts. The efficiency for removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) reached 100 % within 6 min ([TC-HCl] = 20 mg/L, [CNPs/FeOCl] = 0.2 g/L, [H2O2] = 0.3 mM, pH = 3.5), and the catalytic activity of CNPs/FeOCl was higher than those of FeOCl and CNPs alone. In particular, the TC-HCl degradation efficiencies over a wide pH range of 3 to 11 were nearly 100 % within 8 min. TC-HCl and its oxidation in-termediates were degraded by the center dot OH radicals produced from Fe2+/Fe3+ induced degradation of H2O2, and small molecules (H2O and CO2) were eventually produced, which enabled antibiotic degradation through three possible pathways. Additional results showed that electrons promoted the cycling of Fe2+ and Fe3+ from the FeOCl, which enhanced the decomposition of H2O2 to produce more center dot OH and improve the catalytic activity. Finally, the novel Fenton system catalyzed efficient degradations of antibiotics in natural water, providing a potential method for removal of antibiotics and other organic pollutants with CNPs/FeOCl.
One-Step Synthesis of Fe-Doped G-C3n4 Photocatalyst for Ultra-Fast Degradation of Organic Pollutants Via the Synergistic Effect of Fe3n and Fe3c Active Sites

Abstract:The photo-Fenton process provides a sustainable and cost-effective strategy for removing refractory organic contaminants in environmental remediation. Herein, a high-efficient Fe-doped g-C3N4 photocatalyst (Fe@CN10) with a unique 3D porous mesh structure was prepared by one-pot thermal polymerization for ultrafast degradation of azo dyes, antibiotics, and phenolic acids under visible light irradiation. Fe@CN10 exhibited a synergy between adsorption-degradation processes due to the co-existence of Fe3C and Fe3N active sites but also had the self-regulation to form an acidic microenvironment at the catalyst-substrate interface. Methyl orange (MO) was degraded by Fe@CN10 with a rate up to 140.32 mg/Lmin-1 based on the cooperation of free radicals (·OH and ·O2−) and h+ in heterogeneous photo-Fenton systems. The excellent photocatalytic performance was also enhanced by in-situ generated non-free radicals (1O2 and h+) as well as H2O2 (49.24 - 83.11 μM) from photo-self-Fenton reactions. Additionally, sponge/Fe@CN10 was filled in continuous flow reactors for nearly 100% MO degradation and ideal H2O2 utilization over 150 hours of operation when treating artificial wastewater. This work provided a facile route to prepare highly-active Fe-doped photocatalysts and the development of green photocatalytic systems for wastewater treatment in the future.

Abstract:The exploitation of magnetic recyclable and effective degradation photocatalysts with wide-pH-range response was essential to the practical application in the photo-Fenton process. In this study, Cd/CdS coupling with CuO/Fe2O3/CuFe2O4(CF) was employed to prepare an efficient and recyclable photocatalyst Cd/CdS-CuO/Fe2O3/CuFe2O4(CCCF). The obtained CCCF was utilized to activate H2O2 for the photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline after verifying optical properties and energy band structures. The photo-Fenton degradation performance of CCCF on tetracycline was researched in the effects of photocatalyst concentration, initial pH and H2O2 volume. The photo-Fenton removal efficiency of CCCF+H2O2 was capable of achieving 82.43 % under the optimal reaction condition, which was apparently higher than that of Cd/CdS and CF. The enhanced degradation efficiency could be owned to the effective carriers separation thanks to the p-n heterojunction. The development of such photocatalysts offers a new approach to degrading organic pollutants from industrial wastewater, making it a valuable tool for contaminants degradation.

Abstract:Photodegradation shows a potential strategy for alleviating the excessive antibiotics crisis. The synergistic effect of various metal compounds immobilized on conductive substrates has been considered for wastewater treatment. However, developing a facile and universal approach for rational design and enhancing photocatalytic properties has endured extreme challenges. Herein, we develop a strategy to facilitate the photocatalytic reactions by designing a composite architecture of ZIF–8 ligand binding to the in–situ synthesis ZnO seed layer on carbon fiber. In this architecture, the dissolution and release of the seed layer in the excessive 2–Methylimidazole methanol solution were used as the binder to enhance the interplay between organic ligand and substrate. As an evaluated system for antibiotic contaminants, the photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride was performed with a removal efficiency of 88.47% (TC = 50 mg/L, pH = 4, 0.08 g of photocatalyst, illumination within 100 min). Moreover, the photocatalyst exhibited a steady photocatalytic activity (75.0%) after five cycles. The present work demonstrated a strategy for enhancing the photocatalytic performances of carbon fiber and accordingly provided useful perception into the design of the synergistic structure.

Abstract:The in-depth mineralization and detoxification of trace antibiotics in water by advanced oxidation process (AOPs) is crucial for its industrial application. In this work, deep mineralization and detoxification of antibiotics are achieved through FeOCl/H2O2/Vis system, and regeneration mechanism of light -induced electron transfer surface active sites has been proposed. The system can degrade multitudinous antibiotics and increase mineralization rate by 3-10 times. Toxicity of treated wastewater decreases sharply, allowing bacteria to survive normally. Mechanistic studies show that intermediates containing carboxyl groups formed by free radical oxidation complex with Fe(III) on surface of FeOCl, thereby hindering Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and further mineralization of antibiotics. While electron transfer occurs between catalyst and intermediates through visible light irradiation, breaking though oxidation of intermediates and reduction of Fe(III), and Fe(III)/Fe(II) ratio decreases from 2.57 to 1.5. This work provides a promising strategy for solving the problems of low mineralization and difficult detoxification of antibiotics by AOPs.
Efficient removal of tetracycline in water by a Fe 3 O 4 -mediated persulfate activation and biodegradation coupled system: Performance, validation, and mechanism

Abstract:The cost-effective removal of antibiotic contaminants from the aqueous environment has become a hot research topic now. In this study, we proposed a novel coupled system, i.e., nano-Fe 3 O 4 (nFe 3 O 4 ) mediated persulfate (PDS) activation and biodegradation process, for efficient removal of tetracycline (TCH). The feasibility of the coupled system (nFe 3 O 4 + PDS + microbe) was proved by comparing it with a single AOP (nFe 3 O 4 + PDS) in batch and column experiments. The highest removal efficiencies of TCH (20 mg/L) and TOC reached 99.5 % and 43.2 % by the coupled system within 60 days. SEM spectra exhibited that nFe 3 O 4 and microorganisms were well loaded on the non-woven fabric. Meanwhile, XPS results proved that more Fe(II) was on the surface of nFe 3 O 4 in the coupled system than that in the single AOP. The presence of abundant Fe(II) in the coupled system suggested the potential electron transfer from Fe(III) with the assistance of microbes. High-throughput sequencing results indicated Proteobacteria played an important role in the coupled system. The degradation intermediates of TCH were analyzed by ultraperformance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (UPLC-MS), and reasonable degradation pathways were proposed. The coupling of nFe 3 O 4 + PDS and biological treatment improved the TCH removal efficiency and reduced the burden of subsequent water treatment, which provided a feasible idea for the treatment of antibiotic-containing wastewater.

Abstract:Antibiotic residues have been found to have potentially harmful effects on ecological and human health. Carbon nitride-based photocatalysts have widely focused on antibiotic photocatalytic degradation. Herein, we prepared Fe-modified g-C3N4 nanorod bunches (FCNBs) using chemical vapor co-deposition. Specifically, through the process of calcination, a blend of urea and chlorophyllin sodium iron salt underwent an intriguing transformation, resulting in the integration of Fe into the framework of the g-C3N4 nanorod cluster. The resulting photocatalyst exhibited remarkable stability and superior dispersibility. The prepared FCNBs had a unique structure, which was beneficial for increasing light absorption. Furthermore, the Fe species formed a chemical coordination with the g-C3N4 matrix, thereby altering the electronic structure of the matrix. This modification facilitated charge transfer, prolonged the carrier lifetime, and enhanced light absorption, all of which significantly increased the photocatalytic activity. The oxytetracycline degradation efficiency of FCNBs was 82.5%, and they demonstrated outstanding stability in cycle trials. This work introduces a promising photocatalyst for the degradation of antibiotics.
