Abstract:In order to investigate the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete bridge girder prestressed with external carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) tendons,the experimental data of different type of bridge girders prestressed with external tendons were analysized.The investigation results indicate that the flexural behavior of concrete girders with externally prestressed CFRP tendons are similar to that with external steel tendons in many aspects.The external prestressed CFRP tendons can improve bearing capacity and reduce their deformation and crack remarkably.The initial loading state on the girders before tendon jacking has no significant effect on the capacity and deflection.The stress improvement of CFRP appeared after the yield of non-prestressing reinforcing steel rebar.

Abstract:A new concept of self-centering links using post-tensioned composite tendons consisting of shape memory alloy rods and steel rods is proposed. This new concept is applicable to both short and long links and is able to fully exploit the hysteresis capacity of the used shape memory alloy material. A general scheme for preliminary design of the proposed self-centering links is developed. A typical example is used to verify the proposed concept and its design scheme. A comparison between the example using composite tendons and the previously reported example using pure shape memory alloy tendons is carried out. It is found that the system using composite tendons needs less than half of the shape memory alloy material needed by the system using pure shape memory alloy tendons to possess comparable hysteresis properties meeting the given design demands. The new concept of self-centering links is applied to a typical eccentrically braced frame system to validate its feasibility and advantages in structural systems.
Theoretical Study on Prestress Loss in Cross-Tensioned Concrete Pavement with BFRP Tendons

Abstract:Cross-tensioned concrete pavement can reduce transverse joints and cracks and improve the durability of the pavement, and the decrease in slab thickness can be achieved without damaging the performance of the pavement. However, the corrosion of the steel can cause serious damage to the pavement structure, resulting in higher maintenance costs and shorter service life. Basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) has been proven to be an effective alternative in both jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP) and continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) due to its lightweight and corrosion-resistant properties. In this paper, a systematic theoretical method for determining the prestress loss of BFRP tendons in cross-tensioned concrete pavement was proposed, with the impact of the slab width and distribution angle of the prestressed tendon on the prestress loss being studied and compared to the results of traditional steel strands. Results showed that the proportion of the prestress loss due to anchorage deformation and prestress retraction in the prestressing stage rose with the increase in distribution angle and the decrease in slab width, while the prestress loss during the in-service stage was a constant value for both BFRP tendons and steel strands. The prestress loss of BFRP tendons was far lower than that of steel strands in both prestressing stage and in-service stage for a given slab width (3 m, 4.5 m, 9.0 m, 12.75 m) and distribution angle (20°, 25°, 30°, 35°, 40°, 45°), and the difference ranged from 6.4% to 16%, signifying the feasibility of BFRP tendons in cross-tensioned concrete pavement. Overall, the smaller the slab width, the greater the difference of the prestress loss between BFRP tendons and steel strands.

Abstract:Corrosion resistance, high strength, and advantageous strength-to-weight ratio enable fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) to have substantial potential to replace steel tendons in prestressed applications. One of the main technical obstacles to wide use of FRPs in the construction industry is the methodology to anchor FRP tendons to achieve their full strength. High tensile to compression and shear strength ratios make it necessary to develop a new anchorage design concept for FRP tendons. This paper gives a literature review of bond-type anchorage systems and the mechanics of stress transfer by bond from FRP tendons to grout and reports an experimental study on a newly developed bond-type anchorage system with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) Leadline 8-mm-diameter rods. The test program consisted of nine monotonic tensile tests, two pullout tests, and two proving tests on the anchorage system with Leadline single- or 9-rod tendons. The test results showed that the developed anchorage system with 250-mm bond length ensures full development of the tensile strength of Leadline mono-rod tendons. The bond strength of Leadline 9-rod tendons is 14 MPa for a bond length of 95 mm, 62% of that of mono-rod ones with a bond length of 80 mm. The anchorage system with a 400-mm bond length gives at least 90% of the tensile strength of Leadline 9-rod tendons and also demonstrates an acceptable sustained loading behaviour in accordance with existing codes.Key words: anchorage, bond stress, creep, grout, polymers, rod, slip, tendon.

Abstract:Adsorption reversibility and competition between fractionated components of the Trichoderma reesei cellulase system were studied. Specific endoglucanase (EGI), nonspecific endoglucanases (EGII, EGIII), and cellobio‐hydrolase (CBHI) were previously grouped according to their hydrolytic function. At 5°C, direct evidence of exchange between adsorbed and free enzyme was obtained for each component using [3H] and [14C] radiolabeled tracers. No release of bound enzymes was detected upon dilution of the free enzyme solution. In simultaneous adsorption of enzyme pairs, CBHI was shown to predominate adsorption. Endoglucanase EGI was preferentially adsorbed over EGII and EGIII. Sequential adsorption studies have shown that interaction between enzyme components largely determines the degree of their adsorption. Evidence suggests that both common and distinct adsorption sites exist and that their occupation depends on which components are involved. Predominance in adsorption by any one of the enzyme components is decreased at 50°C. Light microscopy and monitoring of sugar production during cellulose hydrolysis provided evidence that reduction in the ionic strength decreases the adsorption predominance of CBHI and enhances the synergism between the cellulase components.
Prestressing low clinker structural concrete elements by ultra-high modulus carbon fibre reinforced polymer tendons

Abstract:Abstract The combination of low clinker high-performance concrete (LCHPC) and ultra-high modulus (UHM) carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons was recently proposed for prestressed structural elements. The 70% reduction in cement content resulting in limited creep and shrinkage of the LCHPC in comparison to a conventional high-performance concrete (HPC) and the very high UHM-CFRP tendon stiffness (> 509 GPa) were expected to impact the mechanical behaviour of such structures. This study focuses on the behaviour of 3 m-long beam specimens during prestressing, concrete hardening and in 4 point-bending experiments. Fibre optic sensors were implemented inside the CFRP tendons to measure strain during those stages and a digital image correlation system was employed to monitor the 4-point-bending tests. After 28 days, the LCHPC recipe, despite a 70% cement reduction and much smaller environmental footprint, did not show measurable differences in the prestress loss behaviour in comparison to a conventional HPC. The UHM-CFRP prestressing tendons, because of their stiffness, showed both higher prestress losses of around 40% and on average a nearly doubled prestress transfer length. However, they increased the beam`s maximum load-bearing capacity by 21% and showed 47% less deflection at failure in comparison to beams prestressed with the standard modulus (UTS)-CFRP tendons.

Abstract:Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP), particularly those incorporating carbon fiber (CFRP), has high strength, high stiffness-to-weight ratio and high resistance to corrosion, which shows potential for use as prestressing tendons in corrosive environment. However, concrete beams prestressed with FRP tendons have showed brittle flexural failure due to the elastic rupture of FRP tendons. In order to improve the ductility, a combination of bonded and/or unbonded prestressing tendons was used. Nine prestressed concrete beams were tested up to failure to study the effect of bonded and unbonded FRP tendons on their flexural capacity. Three factors were taken into consideration; the bonding condition of CFRP tendons, the location of CFRP tendons and the prestressing ratio. Also an analytical investigation was carried out to extend some flexural capacity calculation equations to this beam type. The results of the experimental showed that under the same condition, the carrying capacity of concrete beam prestressed with bonded FRP tendons was 20% higher than that of internal unbonded prestressed beam, and was 40% higher than that of external unbonded prestressed beam without deviators. By combination of bonded and unbonded FRP tendons, the ductility of prestressed concrete beams can be improved.

Abstract:A Novel Composite Anchorage System with Dispersed CFRP Tendons. A novel composite anchorage with dispersed arrangement of carbon fiber‐reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons was proposed. The bonding length and constraint ratio of the dispersed‐tendon composite anchorage were determined by numerical simulation. Six groups of multi‐CFRP tendon composite anchorage systems (MTCAS) were tested to investigate their static performance. The axial force dispersion coefficient cv and relative slip ratio coefficient δ were proposed to evaluate the static performance of the MTCAS with variables, including pre‐tension load, the inner inclination angle of the sleeve and the modified bonding medium. Results demonstrated that increasing the bonding length and restraint ratio of steel sleeve could improve the stress state of tendon in the anchorage. The anchorage with a bonding length of 280 mm and a constraint ratio of the sleeve of 0.90 can reliably anchor multiple CFRP tendons arranged in a dispersed arrangement. An inner inclination angle of 3.1° of the sleeve can be adopted on the premise that strength utilization ratio is guaranteed and anchorage diameter meets the requirements. An adequate pre‐tension load can reduce the slips of tendons, and the recommended pre‐tension load value should not exceed 0.7 Fptk. The 0.25% basalt fiber‐modified epoxy resin anchorage obtained the highest strength utilization ratio. Highlights A novel composite anchorage with dispersed carbon fiber‐reinforced polymer tendons was designed. New mechanical parameters evaluating anchorage performance were proposed. Basalt fiber (BF)‐modified epoxy resin (ER) can improve anchoring performance. The 0.25% BF‐modified ER anchorage obtained the highest strength utilization ratio. Pre‐tension load should not exceed 0.7 times the theoretical tensile load.

Abstract:To enhance the flexural performance of steel-concrete composite beams in the negative moment region, an external prestressing technique utilizing Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) tendons was implemented for reinforcement. This article designed and manufactured 6 test beams for static load testing, and compared the changes in mechanical properties of the test beams before and after reinforcement, such as failure mode, deflection, CFRP tendons stress increment, strain, and cracks. A specific focus was given to exploring the impact of varying prestressing levels and the quantity of CFRP tendons on the flexural performance of composite beams in the negative moment region. Based on the plastic hinge theory, a new calculation model for the flexural bearing capacity of externally prestressed CFRP tendon-reinforced composite beams was established. The use of externally prestressed CFRP tendons reinforcement has a significant reinforcement effect, which can improve the elastic working range and ultimate bending bearing capacity of the composite beam in the negative bending moment zone, and effectively limit the development of concrete slab cracks in the negative bending moment zone. Theoretical values obtained from the proposed model in this study showed good agreement with experimental values, enabling accurate calculation of the incremental stress in externally prestressed CFRP tendons and the ultimate bearing capacity of composite beams. The study also provides a reasonable range for controlling the prestress level of CFRP tendons, which can serve as a reference for practical engineering design.

Abstract:To the Editor: Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4)-responsive phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) deficiency is a recently recognized variant of hyperphenylalaninemia (HPA) characterized by a positive response to a BH4-loading test (1). Up to the present time, 11 different mutations have been described which are associated with mild HPA (Table 1) and all patients have been shown to be compound heterozygotes (1–6). They respond to an oral challenge with BH4 (10–20 mg/ kg) in that plasma phenylalanine concentrations normalize within 4–8 h after administration and they can be treated with BH4 monotherapy instead of a low-phenylalanine diet. It has been speculated that some of mutations in the PAH gene result in a Km variant of the PAH enzyme in which enhancement of the residual activity can be achieved by supplementation of BH4. These mutations, located in the DNA region encoding for the catalytic domain (exons 6 to 12) of the enzyme, may potentially alter the tertiary structure. Most of these mutations, when expressed recombinantly in eukaryotic cells, showed at least 25% residual activity (7). However, Lindner et al. (4) showed that BH4-responsiveness may differ between patients with the same genotype and suggested that the difference must be due to other as yet unknown factors. Only one out of three patients with the common R408W/Y414C mutations responded to the loading with 20 mg BH4/kg body weight. Recently, a patient with a BH4-responsive PAH deficiency, whose plasma phenylalanine normalized within 8 h from 726 to 120 mol/L after oral administration of BH4 (20 mg/kg/day), was diagnosed at the Children’s Hospital of Reutlingen. Abstract:Structural applications of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in civil infrastructure rehabilitation projects are receiving increasing interest due primarily to their high strength-weight ratio, resistance to aggressive environments, and other favorable properties that can be used to advantage in civil projects. Structural design and evaluation in civil engineering applications are distinguished by their reliance on codes of practice and on advanced analysis in lieu of component testing. The current lack of supporting codes, standards, and other regulatory guidance is a barrier to the implementation of high-performance FRP materials in civil construction. Experience over the past three decades in developing probability-based limit state design criteria for common construction materials points the way forward for making similar advances in guidelines for design and evaluation of structural components and systems that employ FRP composite materials. This paper summarizes some of the available tools and supporting databases that can be used to develop reliability-based guidelines for design and evaluation of FRP composites in civil construction and illustrates their application with several practical examples involving strengthening reinforced concrete flexural members.

Abstract:Conventional concrete is a common building material that is often ridden with cracks due to its low tensile strength. Moreover, it has relatively low shear strength and, unless reinforced, undergoes brittle failure under tension and shear. Thus, concrete must be adequately reinforced to prevent brittle tensile and shear failures. Steel fibres are commonly used for this purpose, which can partially or fully replace traditional steel reinforcement. The strength properties and bond characteristics between reinforcing steel fibres and the concrete matrix are crucial in ensuring the effective performance of the composite material. In particular, the quality of the bond has a significant impact on crack development, crack spacing, and crack width, among other parameters. Hence, the proper application of steel fibre-reinforced concrete (SFRC) requires a thorough understanding of the factors influencing its bond behaviour and strength properties. This paper offers a comprehensive review of the main factors controlling the bond behaviour between concrete and steel fibres in SFRC. In particular, we focus on the effects of the physical and mechanical properties of steel fibres (e.g., geometry, inclination angle, embedded length, diameter, and tensile strength) on the bond behaviour. We find that the addition of up to 2% of steel fibres into concrete mixtures can significantly enhance the compressive strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength of concrete components (by about 20%, 143%, and 167%, respectively). Furthermore, a significant enhancement in the pull-out performance of the concrete is observed with the addition of steel fibres at various dosages and geometries.

Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons have a high potential to replace steel ones in bridge structures. However, concerns have been raised about their poor transverse properties, particularly when CFRP tendons experience combined tensile and bending loads, as in externally pre-stressed structures. This paper aims to understand and predict the bending behaviors of CFRP tendons with a pretension load. The experiment investigated the static bending behaviors of the CFRP tendon with pretension ratios ranging from 0 to 0.6. The pretension load stiffens the bending behavior of CFRP tendons, and a lower pretension ratio leads to an obvious increase in both the maximum bending load and energy dissipation. An analytical model was proposed to predict the load-deflection relationship and threshold pretension ratio of CFRP tendons under combined tensile and bending loads. The proposed model is in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:This study builds a refined finite element (FE) model to research the flexural behavior of a reinforced beam with prestressed CFRP tendons. The precision of the FE model is validated through a comparison with the experimental outcomes. The numerical findings align well with the experimental outcomes, encompassing the failure mode, load-deflection curve, load-strain curves of concrete, steel reinforcements and CFRP tendons. The variances between predicted values and experimental results are within 10%. Leveraging the verified FE model, an extensive parametric study has been carried out to examine the effects of various parameters, including the CFRP tendon prestress, the CFRP tendon diameter, the deviator layout, the anchorage height and the prestressing strand prestress. Leveraging the findings from the parametric study, some refined design recommendations are proposed for practical reinforcement applications: Increasing the CFRP tendon prestress in practical reinforcement designs is recommended; CFRP tendons with larger diameters are recommended for use in practical reinforcement designs; Employing a linear CFRP tendon profile for reinforcement is not considered optimal in practical applications; The prestress loss in the prestressing strands of PC beams should be considered in practice.

Abstract:In the pursuit of creating more sustainable and resilient structures, the exploration of construction materials and strengthening methodologies is imperative. Traditional methods of relying on steel for strengthening proved to be uneconomical and unsustainable, prompting the investigation of innovative composites. Fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs), known for their lightweight and high-strength properties, gained prominence among structural engineers in the 1980s. This period saw the development of novel approaches, such as near-surface mounted and externally bonded reinforcement, for strengthening of concrete structures using FRPs. In recent decades, additional methods, including surface curvilinearization and external prestressing, have been discovered, demonstrating significant additional benefits. While these techniques have shown the enhanced performance, their full potential remains untapped. This article presents a comprehensive review of current approaches employed in the fortification of reinforced cement concrete structures using FRPs. It concludes by identifying key areas that warrant in-depth research to establish a sustainable methodology for structural strengthening, positioning FRPs as an effective replacement for conventional retrofitting materials. This review aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on modern structural strengthening strategies, highlight the properties of FRPs, and propose avenues for future research in this dynamic field.

The Interfacial Friction Loss of Prestressed Carbon-Fiber Tendons in a Bending State

Abstract:Carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is ideal for bridge reinforcement due to its high strength, light weight, and corrosion resistance. Studies on the friction loss of CFRP tendons in a bending state form an important part of advancing the application of CFRP materials to external prestressing strengthening technology. To understand the magnitude and variation of interfacial friction loss of prestressed CFRP tendons under bending conditions, 12 single-bending prestressing tension tests and 4 three-consecutive-bending prestressing tension tests were conducted in this study. Two bending radii of 1.5 m and 2 m, two bending angles of 20° and 30°, and three contact surfaces with different friction coefficients were selected for the steering block condition to measure the friction loss under each stage of tensioning prestress. On this basis, a model for calculating the friction loss rate on the surface of prestressed CFRP tendons was derived for the change of contact stress between CFRP tendons and deflectors during the installation and tensioning stages. The results show that the friction loss of external prestressed CFRP tendons is mainly related to four external factors: bending radius, steering angle, friction coefficient, and the magnitude of tensioning prestress; with the increase of prestress, the friction loss rate goes through three stages, the rising stage, the falling stage, and the stable stage; in the process of friction loss rate change, the main influencing factor controlling the magnitude of friction loss rate changes from bending radius to steering angle. In the theoretical calculation model of friction loss rate, the calculation model of the prestressed CFRP tendons under multiple successive bends can be simplified to a combination of several calculation models for a single bend. This study provides a reference for the engineering field of strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) beams using external prestressed CFRP tendons.

Four tendon-related variables are considered, namely, the area, initial prestress, depth and elastic modulus of tendons. The analysis shows that flexural ductility decreases as the tendon area, initial prestress or elastic modulus increases but is insensitive to the tendon depth. The ultimate tendon stress increment (Δσp) is influenced by all of the four variables investigated. JGJ 92-2016 (Chinese technical specification for concrete structures prestressed with unbonded tendons) significantly underestimates Δσp and, hence, is over-conservative for the strength design of these beams. An equation is proposed for calculating Δσp, taking into account all four variables investigated. An analytical model is then developed to estimate the flexural strength (Mu) of prestressed concrete beams with external CFRP tendons. The proposed analytical model shows good agreement with FEA, i.e., the mean discrepancy for Δσp is 0.9% with a standard deviation of 11.1%; and the mean discrepancy for Mu is −1.6% with a standard deviation of 2.1%.
Numerical Study of Using FRP and Steel Rebars in Simply Supported Prestressed Concrete Beams with External FRP Tendons.

Abstract:This study aimed at examining the feasibility of using fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) rebars instead of steel ones in prestressed concrete beams (PCBs) with external FRP tendons. By applying an experimentally validated program, numerical tests were performed on simply supported PCBs, with investigated variables including rebars' type and area. Three types of rebars were considered, i.e., carbon, glass FRPs (CFRP, GFRP), and reinforcing steel. The ratio of tensile rebars ranged from 0.22% to 2.16%. The results indicated that the beams with CFRP rebars exhibited better crack mode and higher ultimate load than the beams with GFRP or steel rebars. GFRP rebars led to considerably higher ultimate deflection and tendon stress increment than steel rebars. In addition, several models for calculating the ultimate stress in unbonded tendons were assessed. An analytical model was also proposed to predict the tendon stress at ultimate and flexural strength in externally PCBs with steel and FRP rebars. The model predictions agreed well with the numerical results.
