Abstract:Single crystals of Ca$_3$(Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$)$_4$Sn$_{13}$ (3-4-13) were synthesized by flux growth and characterized by X-ray diffraction, EDX, magnetization, resistivity and radio frequency magnetic susceptibility tunnel diode resonator (TDR) techniques. Compositional variation of the Rh/Ir ratio was used to study the coexistence and competition between the charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity. The superconducting transition temperature varies from approximately 7 K in pure Ir ($x=0$) to approximately 8.3 K in pure Rh ($x=1$). Temperature-dependent electrical resistivity reveals monotonic suppression of the CDW transition temperature, $T_{\text{CDW}}(x)$. The CDW starts in pure Ir, $x=0$, with $T_{\text{CDW}}\approx40$~K and extrapolates roughly linearly to zero at $x_c=0.58$ under the dome of superconductivity. Magnetization and transport measurements show a significant influence of CDW on the superconducting and normal state. Vortex pinning is substantially enhanced in the CDW region, and the resistivity is larger in this part of the phase diagram. The London penetration depth is attenuated exponentially upon cooling at low temperatures for all compositions, indicating a fully-gapped Fermi surface. We conclude that a novel $\text{Ca}_3(\text{Ir}_{1-x}\text{Rh}_x)_4\text{Sn}_{13}$ alloy with coexisting/competing CDW and superconductivity, is a good candidate to look for a composition-driven quantum critical point at ambient pressure.

Abstract:The quasi-skutterudites (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_{3}$(Rh, Ir)$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$ show a rare nonmagnetic quantum critical point associated with the second-order charge-density-wave (CDW) and structural distortion transition extended under the superconducting "dome". So far, the non-thermal tuning parameters for accessing the QCP included changing stoichiometry, pressure, and a magnetic field. Here we add another parameter -- a nonmagnetic point-like disorder induced by 2.5 MeV electron irradiation. The non-Fermi liquid regime was inferred from the analysis of the temperature-dependent resistivity, $\rho\left(T\right)$, in single crystals of (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_{3}$Rh$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$. Starting at compositions below the known QCP concentration of $x_c=0.9$, added disorder resulted in a progressively larger linear term and a reduced quadratic term in $\rho\left(T\right)$. This behavior is supported by theoretical analysis based on the idea of superconducting fluctuations encompassing the crossover from quantum to thermal regimes. Our results strongly support the concept that the nonmagnetic disorder can drive the system toward the quantum critical regime.

Abstract:We report the observation of a superconducting state below 8K coexistent with a spin-glass state caused by atomic disorder in Ce substituted Ca3Rh4Sn13. Measurements of specific heat, resistivity, and magnetism reveal the existence of inhomogeneous superconductivity in samples doped with Ce with superconducting critical temperatures Tc higher than those observed in the parent compound. For Ca3Rh4Sn13, the negative value of the change in resistivity with pressure P, correlates well with the calculated decrease in the density of states at the Fermi energy with P. Based on band structure calculations performed under pressure, we demonstrate how the change in DOS would affect Tc of Ca3Rh4Sn13 under negative lattice pressure in samples that are strongly defected by quenching.

Abstract:X-ray scattering (XRS), x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopic techniques were used to study the electronic and atomic structures of the high-quality Sr3Ir4Sn13 (SIS) single crystal below and above the transition temperature (T* ≈ 147 K). The evolution of a series of modulated satellite peaks below the transition temperature in the XRS experiment indicated the formation of a possible charge density wave (CDW) in the (110) plane. The EXAFS phase derivative analysis supports the CDW-like formation by revealing different bond distances [Sn1(2)-Sn2] below and above T* in the (110) plane. XANES spectra at the Ir L3-edge and Sn K-edge demonstrated an increase (decrease) in the unoccupied (occupied) density of Ir 5d-derived states and a nearly constant density of Sn 5p-derived states at temperatures T < T* in the (110) plane. These observations clearly suggest that the Ir 5d-derived states are closely related to the anomalous resistivity transition. Accordingly, a close relationship exists between local electronic and atomic structures and the CDW-like phase in the SIS single crystal.

Abstract:We present structural properties at different temperatures and high‐pressure (HP) of La3Rh4Sn13 which is one of the interesting systems in the Remika phase RE3Rh4Sn13 (RE = Sr, Ca, La, Pr, Ce) quasi‐skutterudite series using synchrotron diffraction. Data at ambient conditions revealed the presence of several weak reflections, which could be accounted only with a superlattice I* structure (I4132) with lattice parameter a ~19.457 Å. However, above 350 K, a complete suppression of the weak superlattice reflections of the I* structure is observed. Data at higher temperatures is found to be well described by the I structure (Pm‐3n) having half the lattice parameter compared to the I* structure. HP‐XRPD at ambient temperature showed that pressures greater than 7.5 GPa result in similar suppression of the weak I* superlattice reflections. Data at higher pressures is found to be well described by the I structure (Pm‐3n), similar to the high‐temperature phase. HP Raman measurements demonstrated changes that seem to be consistent with a locally more ordered structure as in the case of the I* à I transition. Our findings on La3Rh4Sn13 open up new avenues to study unexplored HP phenomena, especially the superconductivity in these Remika phase quasi‐skutterudites.

Abstract:We report resistivity $\rho$ and thermal conductivity $\kappa$ measurements on Ca$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$ single crystals, in which superconductivity with $T_c \approx 7$ K was claimed to coexist with ferromagnetic spin-fluctuations. Among three crystals, only one crystal shows a small hump in resistivity near 20 K, which was previously attributed to the ferromagnetic spin-fluctuations. Other two crystals show the $\rho \sim T^2$ Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperature. For both single crystals with and without the resistivity anomaly, the residual linear term $\kappa_0/T$ is negligible in zero magnetic field. In low fields, $\kappa_0(H)/T$ shows a slow field dependence. These results demonstrate that the superconducting gap of Ca$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$ is nodeless, thus rule out nodal gap caused by ferromagnetic spin-fluctuations.
Decoupling of Rattling Mode and Superconductivity in Filled-Skutterudite Ba x Ir 4 Sb 12

Abstract:The rattling mode, an anharmonic vibrational phonon, is widely recognized as a critical factor in the emergence of superconductivity in caged materials. Here, we present a counterexample in a filled-skutterudite superconductor Ba x Ir 4 Sb 12 (x = 0.8, 0.9, 1.0), synthesized via a high-pressure route. Transport measurements down to liquid 3 He temperatures reveal a transition temperature (T c ) of 1.2 K and an upper critical field (H c2 ) of 1.3 T. Unlike other superconductors with caged structures, the Ba x Ir 4 X 12 (X = P, As, Sb) family exhibits a monotonic decreasing T c with the enhancement of the rattling mode, as indicated by fitting the Bloch-Grüneisen formula. Theoretical analysis suggests that electron doping from Ba transforms the direct bandgap IrSb 3 into a metal, with the Fermi surface dominated by the hybridization of Ir-5d and Sb-5p orbitals. Our findings of decoupled rattling modes and superconductivity distinguish the Ba x Ir 4 Sb 12 family from other caged superconductors, warranting further exploration into the underlying mechanism.

Abstract:High quality Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 single-crystals are successfully grown by floating-zone technique, and the transport properties are studied. The temperature dependence of resistivity along the c-axis direction is semiconductor-like for x <= 10 and it can be fitted by the thermal activation equation rho=rho(0) exp(Delta/k(B)T) with k(B) being the Boltzmann constant and Delta the activation energy. A break in the slope of thermopower (S) versus the inverse temperature (1/T) corresponding to the formation of charge-density waves (CDW) is first observed for x <= 6. The temperature dependence of thermopower becomes metallic for x >= 8 while the resistivity is still semiconductor-like. We propose that the insulation behaviour of the resistivity in the Ca doping range 8 <= x <= 11 could result from the localization of the charge carriers due to the disorder induced by Ca doping and a revised electronic phase diagram is derived based on our observations.

Abstract:We report that a quasi-one-dimensional ternary compound Ca3Pt4Bi8 exhibits bulk superconductivity at 0.6 K probed by dc magnetic susceptibility and specific-heat experiments, coexisting with a surface superconductivity at 1.17 K probed by electrical resistivity measurements. The two superconducting phases exhibit significantly different upper critical fields. In electrical resistivity measurements, the resistivity exhibits strong anisotropy and the obtained upper critical field is strongly anisotropic as well, implying two-dimensional (2D) superconductivity. Meanwhile, the bulk upper critical field measured by the dc magnetic susceptibility and specific heat is much smaller than that obtained by electrical resistivity measurements. Moreover, the angular dependence of the upper critical field mu 0Hc2 based on the resistivity measurements is consistent with the 2D Tinkham model. Combined with the study of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), 2D superconductivity should occur on the surface of the sample where a thin shell surrounding the bulk phase forms possibly due to a kind of spontaneous chemical change. The first-principles calculations unveil a complicated Fermi surface with ten bands crossing the Fermi level. Some steep bands among these reflect the quasi-one-dimensional nature. This quasi-one-dimensional ternary compound exhibits interesting surface superconductivity in addition to the bulk superconductivity which is worthy of further study.

Abstract:Here, we report on a new kind of compound, XδIr4X12−δ (X = P, As), the first hole-doped skutterudites superconductor. We provide atomic-resolution images of the caging As atoms using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). By inserting As atoms into the caged structure under a high pressure, superconductivity emerges with a maximum transition temperature (Tc) of 4.4 K (4.8 K) in IrAs3 (IrP3). In contrast to all of the electron-doped skutterudites, the electronic states around the Fermi level in XδIr4X12−δ are dominated by the caged X atom, which can be described by a simple body-centered tight-binding model, implying a distinct pairing mechanism. Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal an intimate relationship between the pressure-dependent local-phonon mode and the enhancement of Tc. Superconducting dome associated with the suppression and re-emergence of charge density wave states upon sulfur substitution in CuIr2Te4 chalcogenides

Abstract:We report the path from the charge density wave (CDW)-bearing superconductor CuIr2Te4 to the metal insulator transition (MIT)-bearing compound CuIr2S4 by chemical alloying with the gradual substitution of S for Te. The evolution of structural and physical properties of the CuIr2Te4-xSx polycrystalline system with the doping range from 0 to 4 is systemically examined. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results imply CuIr2Te4-xSx in the range between 0 and 0.5 crystallizes in a NiAs defected trigonal structure, whereas it adapts to the cubic spinel structure in the doping range from 3.6 to 4 and it is a mixed phase in the doping range from 0.5 to 3.6. Unexpectedly, the resistivity and magnetization measurements reveal that small-concentration S substitution for Te can suppress the CDW transition, but it reappears around x = 0.2, and the CDW transition temperature enhances clearly as x augments in the range from 0.2 to 0.5. Besides, the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) first increases with S doping content and then decreases after reaching a maximum Tc = 2.82 K for CuIr2Te3.85S0.15. MIT order has been observed in the spinel region from 3.6 to 4 associated with TMI increasing with x increasing. Finally, the rich electronic phase diagram of temperature versus x for this CuIr2Te4-xSx system is assembled, where the superconducting dome is associated with the suppression and re-emergence of CDW as well as MIT states at the end upon sulfur substitution in the CuIr2Te4-xSx chalcogenides.

Abstract:We measured the pressure dependence of in-plane resistivity $\rho_{ab}$ in the recently-discovered iron-based superconductor Ca$_{10}$(Ir$_{4}$As$_{8}$)(Fe$_{2-x}$Ir$_{x}$As$_{2}$)$_{5}$, which shows a unique structural phase transition in the absence of magnetic ordering, with a superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ = 16 K and structural phase transition temperature $T_{\rm s}$ $\simeq$ 100 K at ambient pressure. $T_{\rm c}$ and $T_{\rm s}$ are suppressed on applying pressure and disappear at approximately 0.5 GPa, suggesting a relationship between superconductivity and structure. Ca$_{10}$(Ir$_{4}$As$_{8}$)(Fe$_{2-x}$Ir$_{x}$As$_{2}$)$_{5}$ is a rather rare example in which the superconductivity appears only in a low-temperature ordered phase. The fact that the change in the crystal structure is directly linked with superconductivity suggests that the crystal structure as well as magnetism are important factors governing superconductivity in iron pnictides.

Enhancement of Superconductivity on the Verge of a Structural Instability in Isovalently Doped Β-Thrh1−xirxge

Abstract:β -ThRhGe, the high-temperature polymorph of ThRhGe, is isostructural to the well-known ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe. However, contrary to URhGe, β -ThRhGe is nonmagnetic and undergoes an incomplete structural phase transition at 244 K, followed by a superconducting transition below 3.36 K. Here we show that the isovalent substitution of Ir for Rh leads to a strong enhancement of superconductivity by suppressing the structural transition. At x = 0.5, where the structural transition disappears, T c reaches a maximum of 6.88 K. The enhancement of superconductivity is linked to the proximity to a structural quantum critical point at this Ir concentration, as suggested by the analysis of thermodynamic as well as resistivity data. First principles calculations indicate that the Ir doping has little effect on the electronic band dispersion near the Fermi level. β -ThRh 1− x Ir x Ge thus provides an excellent platform to study the interplay between superconductivity and structural quantum criticality in actinide-containing compounds.

Abstract:We perform optical spectroscopy measurement across the charge density wave (CDW) phase transitions on single-crystal samples of Sr$_{3}$Rh$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$ and (Sr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$)$_{3}$Rh$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$. Formation of CDW energy gap was clearly observed for both single-crystal samples when they undergo the phase transitions. The existence of a Drude component in $\sigma_1(\omega)$ below \TCDW indicates that the Fermi surface is only partially gapped in the CDW state. The obtained value of 2$\Delta$/K$_{B}$T$_{CDW}$ is roughly 13 for both Sr$_{3}$Rh$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$ and (Sr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$)$_{3}$Rh$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$ compounds. The value is considerably larger than the mean-field value based on the weak-coupling BCS theory. The observed spectral feature in (Sr$_{x}$Ca$_{1-x}$)$_{3}$Rh$_{4}$Sn$_{13}$ resembles those seen in many other CDW systems.

Abstract:La$_3$Co$_4$Sn$_{13}$ and La$_3$Ru$_4$Sn$_{13}$ were categorized as BCS superconductors. In a plot of the critical field $H_{c2}$ vs $T$, La$_3$Ru$_4$Sn$_{13}$ displays a second superconducting phase at the higher critical temperature $T_c^{\star}$, characteristic of inhomogeneous superconductors, while La$_3$Co$_4$Sn$_{13}$ shows bulk superconductivity below $T_c$. We observe a decrease in critical temperatures with external pressure and magnetic field for both compounds with $\frac{dT_c^{\star}}{dP} > \frac{dT_c}{dP}$. The pressure dependences of $T_c$ are interpreted according to the McMillan theory and understood to be a consequence of lattice stiffening. The investigation of the superconducting state of La$_3$Co$_x$Ru$_{4-x}$Sn$_{13}$ shows a $T_c^{\star}$ that is larger then $T_c$ for $x<4$. This unique and unexpected observation is discussed as a result of the local disorder and/or the effect of chemical pressure when Ru atoms are partially replaced by smaller Co atoms.

Unconventional Charge-Density Wave in Sr3Ir4Sn13 Cubic Superconductor Revealed by Optical Spectroscopy Study

Abstract:Sr3Ir4Sn13 is an interesting compound showing the coexistence of structural phase transition and superconductivity. The structural phase transition at 147 K leads to the formation of a superlattice. We perform optical spectroscopy measurements across the structural phase transition on single-crystal samples of Sr3Ir4Sn13. The optical spectroscopy study reveals an unusual temperature-induced spectral weight transfer over a broad energy scale, yielding evidence for the presence of electron correlation effects. Below the structural phase transition temperature an energy gap-like suppression in optical conductivity was observed, leading to the removal of partial itinerant carriers near the Fermi level. Unexpectedly, the suppression appears at a much higher energy scale than expected for the usual charge-density-wave phase transition.

Abstract:Here, we report on a new kind of compound, XδIr4X12-δ (X = P, As), the first hole-doped skutterudites superconductor. We provide atomic-resolution images of the caging As atoms using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). By inserting As atoms into the caged structure under a high pressure, superconductivity emerges with a maximum transition temperature (Tc) of 4.4 K (4.8 K) in IrAs3 (IrP3). In contrast to all of the electron-doped skutterudites, the electronic states around the Fermi level in XδIr4X12-δ are dominated by the caged X atom, which can be described by a simple body-centered tight-binding model, implying a distinct pairing mechanism. Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal an intimate relationship between the pressure-dependent local-phonon mode and the enhancement of Tc. The discovery of XδIr4X12-δ provides an arena to investigate the uncharted territory of hole-doped skutterudites, and the method proposed here represents a new strategy of carrier doping in caged structures, without introducing extra elements.

Abstract:Attaining superconducting critical temperatures (Tc) beyond the limit around 14 K observed thus far in spinel compounds AB2X4 (A, B = transition metals, X = O/chalcogen) could elucidate interaction intricacies and inform materials design. This work spotlights CuIr2S4, which exhibits a distinct metal-insulator transition below 230 K, as an unconventional candidate for activation under high pressure. Through transport, diffraction, and spectroscopy experiments conducted at pressures up to 224 GPa, we unveil pressure-tuning that suppressed CuIr2S's transition, yielding two superconducting phases with an un-precedented Tc for spinels. Initially, 3.8 K onset rose monotonically, reaching 18.2 K at 133 GPa. Unexpectedly, a distinct phase with Tc = 2.2 K distinctly emerged at higher pressures, intimating unconventional couplings. Our findings suggest that both geometric frustration and electron-electron interactions play crucial roles in the superconductivity observed in CuIr2S4. The findings stretch perceived temperature limits in spinels and provide structure-property insights to guide the optimiza-tion of quantum materials interactions for tailored targeted functionalities.

Pressure-enhanced superconductivity in cage-type quasiskutterudite Sc5Rh6Sn18 single crystal

Abstract:Sc5Rh6Sn18 with a cage-type quasiskutterudite crystal lattice and type II superconductivity, with superconducting transition temperature Tc = 4.99 K, was investigated under hydrostatic high-pressure (HP) using electrical transport, synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Our data show that HP enhance the metallic nature and Tc of the system. Tc is found to show a continuous increase reaching to 5.24 K at 2.5 GPa. Athough the system is metallic in nature, Raman spectroscopy investigations at ambient pressure revealed the presence of three weak modes at 165.97, 219.86 and 230.35 cm-1, mostly related to the rattling atom Sc. The HP-XRD data revealed that the cage structure was stable without any structural phase transition up to ~7 GPa. The lattice parameters and volume exhibited a smooth decrease without any anomalies as a function of pressure in this pressure range. In particular, a second order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state can describe the pressure dependence of the unit cell volume well, yielding a bulk modulus of ~ 97 GPa. HP Raman investigations revealed a linear shift of all the three Raman modes to higher wavenumbers with increasing pressure up to ~8 GPa. As the pressure enhances the bond overlap, thus inducing more electronic charges into the system, HP-XRD and Raman results may indciate the possibility of obtaining higher Tc with increasing pressures in this pressure range.
