Abstract:Interference modelling is an important problem necessary to design and deploy wireless communication systems. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is presented as the access technique to be used for future communication systems. Therefore, it is crucial to define a quick and reliable way of estimating signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) for multicarrier systems. The most used approach is based on the power spectral density where the out-of-band radiation of the interfering signal is computed. In this paper, we show the inaccuracy of this technique and evaluate its deviation compared to the exact value. We also derive tight lower bound expression for the SINR evaluation. We finally validate the expression through simulation results.1.
Research on Functional Brain Networks Topological Properties by Real-time Fmri Emotion Self-regulation Training

Abstract:Various neuroimaging studies had demonstrated that multiple brain regions would activate during execute cognitive task. Meanwhile, Real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging neurofeedback (rtfMRI-NF) can assist subject self-regulation brain activity. However, the neural mechanisms about rtfMRI-NF were unclear. To investigate this problem, we combined graph theory with resting state fMRI to explore the topological properties of functional brain networks. In our study, subjects were provided with ongoing functional connectivity information which was related to emotion regulation. Our results showed that rtfMRI-NF training could alter the small-world properties and nodal degree in the temporal lobe, frontal lobe, limbic system. Together, our results suggested that rtfMRI-NF training was associated with alters in the topological properties of functional brain networks.
The difference of two brain states: A simultaneous EEG/fMRI study

Abstract:Simultaneous EEG/fMRI is a new technique which can record the EEG and fMRI signal currently. By using this new method people expect to obtain both high temporal and spatial resolution of brain activity. Resting state, which is referred to the brain state under no task conditions, has been one of the focuses of the neuroscience research field. Recently researchers have found the resting state is well organized into very complex structure. Several studies using simultaneous EEG/fMRI have demonstrated that there is some relationship between the EEG and fMRI patterns. In our study, we explored the difference between the functional networks of the two brain states under the resting state, which were identified by two prominent EEG rhythms (alpha and theta). The results demonstrated that the default mode network's activity deceased whereas the other resting networks' activity increased when the prominent rhythm shifted from alpha to theta.
Electrophysiological Brain Network Estimation with Simultaneous Scalp EEG and Intracranial EEG: Inference Algorithm and Applications

Abstract:Activity in the human brain is composed of complex firing patterns and interactions among neurons and neuronal circuits. The neuroimaging field underwent a paradigm shift over the past decades from mapping tasked evoked brain regions of activations towards identifying and characterizing the dynamic brain networks of coordinating brain regions. Electrophysiological signals are the direct manifestation of brain activities, thus characterizing the whole brain electrophysiological networks (WBEN) can serve as a fundamental tool for neuroscience studies and clinical applications. The electrophysiological network inferred from electroencephalogram (EEG) source imaging suffers from low accuracy limited by the Restricted Isometry Property (RIP), while the invasive EEG-derived electrophysiological networks can only characterize partial brain regions where invasive electrodes reside. In this work, we introduce the first framework for the integration of scalp EEG and intracranial EEG (iEEG) for WBEN estimation with a principled estimation framework based on state-space models, where an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm is designed to infer the state variables and brain connectivity simultaneously. We validated the proposed method on synthetic data, and the results revealed improved performance compared to traditional two-step methods using scalp EEG only, which demonstrates the importance of the inclusion of iEEG signal for WBEN estimation. For real data with simultaneous EEG and iEEG, we applied the developed framework to understand the information flows of the encoding and maintenance phases during the working memory task. The information flows between the subcortical and cortical regions are delineated, which highlights more significant information flows from cortical to subcortical regions compared to maintenance phases. The results are consistent with previous research findings, however with the view of the whole brain scope, which underscores the unique utility of the proposed framework.

Abstract:Background . Neural activity under cognitive reappraisal can be more accurately investigated using simultaneous EEG- (electroencephalography) fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) than using EEG or fMRI only. Complementary spatiotemporal information can be found from simultaneous EEG-fMRI data to study brain function. Method . An effective EEG-fMRI fusion framework is proposed in this work. EEG-fMRI data is simultaneously sampled on fifteen visually stimulated healthy adult participants. Net-station toolbox and empirical mode decomposition are employed for EEG denoising. Sparse spectral clustering is used to construct fMRI masks that are used to constrain fMRI activated regions. A kernel-based canonical correlation analysis is utilized to fuse nonlinear EEG-fMRI data. Results . The experimental results show a distinct late positive potential (LPP, latency 200-700ms) from the correlated EEG components that are reconstructed from nonlinear EEG-fMRI data. Peak value of LPP under reappraisal state is smaller than that under negative state, however, larger than that under neutral state. For correlated fMRI components, obvious activation can be observed in cerebral regions, e.g., the amygdala, temporal lobe, cingulate gyrus, hippocampus, and frontal lobe. Meanwhile, in these regions, activated intensity under reappraisal state is obviously smaller than that under negative state and larger than that under neutral state. Conclusions . The proposed EEG-fMRI fusion approach provides an effective way to study the neural activities of cognitive reappraisal with high spatiotemporal resolution. It is also suitable for other neuroimaging technologies using simultaneous EEG-fMRI data.

Abstract:_Objective:The purpose of this study was to compare the features of combined simultaneous electroenceph-alogram and functional MRI (EEG-fMRI)in different laterality of Rolandic epilepsy (RE)and to analyze the relationship of Rolandic epilepsy laterality features between EEG-fMRI and EEG.Methods:Followed to the selection criteria,nineteen chil-dren with RE were recorded,who underwent EEG-fMRI and seven without interictal epileptiform discharge (IED)and with an unacceptable head motion during exams were excluded.Totally twelve children were going through complete fMRI data. Generalized linear models (GLM)was used to analyze the alteration of IED related blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD)signal changes.Lateralization coefficient (LC)of activated brain regions and LC of EEG were calculated and the correlation of them was analyzed.Results:Group analysis of IED major in left and right hemisphere showed BOLD signal ac-tivation in ipsilateral perisylvian central region.Individual analysis displayed BOLD signal activation in perisylvian central region in 10 cases.LC of precentralgyrus showed significant correlation with that of EEG (r= 0.715,P<0.01).Region which consist of postcentralgyrus and rolandic operculum revealed the same result with a modest increase (r= 0.745,P<0.01).Conclusion:Laterality of activated brain on fMRI is correlated with that of EEG signal.The regions of postcentralgy-rus combined rolandic operculum and precentralgyrus are optimal area to describe the laterality of RE.
[Resting Functional MRI with Default Mode-Based Functional Connectivity Analysis for Localization of Epileptic Activity].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:Using the functional connectivity analysis based on the underlying neurophysiological characteristic that epileptic discharges can induce change of brain default mode, to develop a technique for epileptogenic localization using functional MRI (fMRI) without simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG).METHODS:A data-driven method that jointly employed independent component analysis and functional connectivity analysis was used for the resting functional MRI data analysis of 12 focal epileptic patients. The independent components were ranged according to the coefficients of the negative correlation between independent component time course and the signal temporal course in the region of posterior cingulate cortex. The results were comparatively studied with simultaneous EEG-fMRI.RESULTS:In the 10 successful results from 12 patients underwent EEG-fMRI examination, the outcomes of eight subjects were concordant with pathological foci. While the results of all 10 patients processed by data-driven method were concordant with pathological foci, besides the other patients who failed to perform EEG-fMRI examination. Meanwhile, the default mode was well mapped in all patients.CONCLUSIONS:The default mode-based functional connectivity analysis can localize the epileptogenic foci effectively without simultaneous EEG, besides to detect the default mode of epileptic patients.
Dynamic EEG-fMRI mapping: Revealing the relationship between brain connectivity and cognitive state

Abstract:This study investigated the dynamic connectivity patterns between EEG and fMRI modalities, contributing to our understanding of brain network interactions. By employing a comprehensive approach that integrated static and dynamic analyses of EEG-fMRI data, we were able to uncover distinct connectivity states and characterize their temporal fluctuations. The results revealed modular organization within the intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs) of the brain, highlighting the significant roles of sensory systems and the default mode network. The use of a sliding window technique allowed us to assess how functional connectivity varies over time, further elucidating the transient nature of brain connectivity. Additionally, our findings align with previous literature, reinforcing the notion that cognitive states can be effectively identified through short-duration data, specifically within the 30-60 second timeframe. The established relationships between connectivity strength and cognitive processes, particularly during different visual states, underscore the relevance of our approach for future research into brain dynamics. Overall, this study not only enhances our understanding of the interplay between EEG and fMRI signals but also paves the way for further exploration into the neural correlates of cognitive functions and their implications in clinical settings. Future research should focus on refining these methodologies and exploring their applications in various cognitive and clinical contexts.

Abstract:Decoding brain functional states underlying different cognitive processes using multivariate pattern recognition techniques has attracted increasing interests in brain imaging studies. Promising performance has been achieved using brain functional connectivity or brain activation signatures for a variety of brain decoding tasks. However, most of existing studies have built decoding models upon features extracted from imaging data at individual time points or temporal windows with a fixed interval, which might not be optimal across different cognitive processes due to varying temporal durations and dependency of different cognitive processes. In this study, we develop a deep learning based framework for brain decoding by leveraging recent advances in sequence modeling using long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks (RNNs). Particularly, functional profiles extracted from task functional imaging data based on their corresponding subject-specific intrinsic functional networks are used as features to build brain decoding models, and LSTM RNNs are adopted to learn decoding mappings between functional profiles and brain states. We evaluate the proposed method using task fMRI data from the HCP dataset, and experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed method could effectively distinguish brain states under different task events and obtain higher accuracy than conventional decoding models.
Assessing Brain Networks by Resting-State Dynamic Functional Connectivity: An fNIRS-EEG Study

Abstract:The coordination of brain activity between disparate neural populations is highly dynamic. Investigations into intrinsic brain organization by evaluating dynamic resting-state functional connectivity (dRSFC) have attracted great attention in recent years. However, there are few dRSFC studies based on functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) even though it has some advantages for studying the temporal evolution of brain function. In this research, we recruited 20 young adults and measured their resting-state brain fluctuations in several areas of the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes using fNIRS-electroencephalography (EEG) simultaneous recording. Based on a sliding-window approach, we found that the variability of the dRSFC within any region of interest was significantly lower than the connections between region of interests but noticeably greater than the correlation between the channels with a short interoptode distance, which mainly consist of physiological fluctuations occurring in the superficial layers. Furthermore, based on a time-resolved <i>k</i>-means clustering analysis, the temporal evolution was extracted for three dominant functional networks. These networks were roughly consistent between different subject subgroups and in varying sliding time window lengths of 20, 30, and 60 s. Between these three functional networks, there were obvious time-varied and system-specific synchronous relationships. In addition, the oscillation of the frontal-parietal-temporal network showed significant correlation with the switching of one EEG microstate, a finding which is consistent with a previous functional MRI-EEG study. All this evidence implies the functional significance of fNIRS-dRSFC and demonstrates the feasibility of fNIRS for extracting the dominant functional networks based on RSFC dynamics.

Abstract:Brain imaging with a high-spatiotemporal resolution is crucial for accurate brain-function mapping. Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) are two popular neuroimaging modalities with complementary features that record brain function with high temporal and spatial resolution, respectively. One popular non-invasive way to obtain data with both high spatial and temporal resolutions is to combine the fMRI activation map and EEG data to improve the spatial resolution of the EEG source localization. However, using the whole fMRI map may cause spurious results for the EEG source localization, especially for deep brain regions. Considering the head's conductivity, deep regions' sources with low activity are unlikely to be detected by the EEG electrodes at the scalp. In this study, we use fMRI's high spatial-frequency component to identify the local high-intensity activations that are most likely to be captured by the EEG. The 3D Empirical Mode Decomposition (3D-EMD), a data-driven method, is used to decompose the fMRI map into its spatial-frequency components. Different validation measurements for EEG source localization show improved performance for the EEG inverse-modeling informed by the fMRI's high-frequency spatial component compared to the fMRI-informed EEG source-localization methods. The level of improvement varies depending on the voxels' intensity and their distribution. Our experimental results also support this conclusion.

Abstract:Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) have long been used as tools to examine brain activity. Since both methods are very sensitive to changes of synaptic activity, simultaneous recording of EEG and fMRI can provide both high temporal and spatial resolution. Therefore, the two modalities are now integrated into a hybrid tool, EEG-fMRI, which encapsulates the useful properties of the two. Among other benefits, EEG-fMRI can contribute to a better understanding of brain connectivity and networks. This review lays its focus on the methodologies applied in performing EEG-fMRI studies, namely techniques used for the recording of EEG inside the scanner, artifact removal, and statistical analysis of the fMRI signal. We will investigate simultaneous resting-state and task-based EEG-fMRI studies and discuss their clinical and technological perspectives. Moreover, it is established that the brain regions affected by a task-based neural activity might not be limited to the regions in which they have been initiated. Advanced methods can help reveal the regions responsible for or affected by a developed neural network. Therefore, we have also looked into studies related to characterization of structure and dynamics of brain networks. The reviewed literature suggests that EEG-fMRI can provide valuable complementary information about brain neural networks and functions.

Abstract:Simultaneously recorded electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can be used to non-invasively measure the spatiotemporal dynamics of the human brain. One challenge is dealing with the artifacts that each modality introduces into the other when the two are recorded concurrently, for example the ballistocardiogram (BCG). We conducted a preliminary comparison of three different MR compatible EEG recording systems and assessed their performance in terms of single-trial classification of the EEG when simultaneously collecting fMRI. We found tradeoffs across all three systems, for example varied ease of setup and improved classification accuracy with reference electrodes (REF) but not for pulse artifact subtraction (PAS) or reference layer adaptive filtering (RLAF).

Abstract:The combination of electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a very attractive aim in neuroscience, in order to achieve both high temporal and spatial resolution for the non-invasive study of cognitive brain function. In this paper, we record simultaneous EEG–fMRI of three subjects, study the participants’ brain active regions, examine related blood oxygen level—dependent(BOLD) response for fMRI data, and focus on the effects of reappraisal instructions on the amplitude of the late positive potential(LPP) for EEG data. We find that emotion cognitive reappraisal result in early prefrontal cortex responses, decrease negative emotion experience and amygdala response. Besides, the study indicates that reappraisal decrease the magnitude of the LPP.

Abstract:Electrophysiological recording and metabolic imaging are two complimentary techniques in preoperative evaluation of epilepsy surgery. High frequency electrical brain activity has been increasingly used in localizing seizure onset zone (SOZ) owing to the development of stereo-EEG (SEEG) technique. However, SEEG recording has no capacity of whole brain coverage as functional MRI. In this study, we performed cross-modal validation of epileptogenic network defined by SEEG and that by resting-state fMRI on individual brain of epilepsy patients. Epileptogenicity index (EI) based on abnormal high frequency SEEG signals was employed to define the epileptogenic network in electrophysiology. Meanwhile, taking the SEEG sites with highest EI as the seed, resting-state functional MRI and connectivity analysis were used to define the epileptogenic network in hemodynamics. The spatial consistency of these two networks was measured by ROC, and the average AUC reached 0.87, which proved a good consistency between electrophysiological and hemodynamic networks in epileptic brain. The difference part in resting-state fMRI network may supplement the SEEG electrode coverage, to reveal more information about epileptic network.

Abstract:Electroencephalography (EEG) is the standard diagnosis method for a wide variety of diseases such as epilepsy, sleep disorders, encephalopathies, and coma, among others. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance (rs-fMRI) is currently a technique used in research in both healthy individuals as well as patients. EEG and fMRI are procedures used to obtain direct and indirect measurements of brain neural activity: EEG measures the electrical activity of the brain using electrodes placed on the scalp, and fMRI detects the changes in blood oxygenation that occur in response to neural activity. EEG has a high temporal resolution and low spatial resolution, while fMRI has high spatial resolution and low temporal resolution. Thus, the combination of EEG with rs-fMRI using different methods could be very useful for research and clinical applications. In this article, we describe and show the results of a new methodology for processing rs-fMRI using seeds positioned according to the 10-10 EEG standard. We analyze the functional connectivity and adjacency matrices obtained using 65 seeds based on 10-10 EEG scheme and 21 seeds based on 10-20 EEG. Connectivity networks are created using each 10-20 EEG seeds and are analyzed by comparisons to the seven networks that have been found in recent studies. The proposed method captures high correlation between contralateral seeds, ipsilateral and contralateral occipital seeds, and some in the frontal lobe.

Abstract:Neurofeedback is a promising approach for non-invasive modulation of human brain activity with applications for treatment of mental disorders and enhancement of brain performance. Neurofeedback techniques are commonly based on either electroencephalography (EEG) or real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rtfMRI). Advances in simultaneous EEG-fMRI have made it possible to combine the two approaches. Here we report the first implementation of simultaneous multimodal rtfMRI and EEG neurofeedback (rtfMRI-EEG-nf). It is based on a novel system for real-time integration of simultaneous rtfMRI and EEG data streams. We applied the rtfMRI-EEG-nf to training of emotional self-regulation in healthy subjects performing a positive emotion induction task based on retrieval of happy autobiographical memories. The participants were able to simultaneously regulate their BOLD fMRI activation in the left amygdala and frontal EEG power asymmetry in the high-beta band using the rtfMRI-EEG-nf. Our proof-of-concept results demonstrate the feasibility of simultaneous self-regulation of both hemodynamic (rtfMRI) and electrophysiological (EEG) activity of the human brain. They suggest potential applications of rtfMRI-EEG-nf in the development of novel cognitive neuroscience research paradigms and enhanced cognitive therapeutic approaches for major neuropsychiatric disorders, particularly depression.

Abstract:Abstract While functional MRI (fMRI) studies have mainly focused on gray matter, recent studies have consistently found that blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) signals can be reliably detected in white matter, and functional connectivity (FC) has been organized into distributed networks in white matter. To address this question, we employ intracranial stereotactic-electroencephalography (SEEG) and resting-state fMRI data from a group of 16 patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. We find that BOLD FC is correlated with SEEG FC in white matter, and this result is consistent across a wide range of frequency bands for each participant. By including diffusion spectrum imaging data, we also find that white matter FC from both SEEG and fMRI are correlated with white matter structural connectivity, suggesting that anatomical fiber tracts underlie the functional synchronization in white matter. These results provide evidence for the electrophysiological and structural basis of white matter BOLD FC, which could be a potential biomarker for psychiatric and neurological disorders.

Abstract:In recent years, the rapid development of neuroimaging technology has been providing many powerful tools for cognitive neuroscience research. Among them, the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), which has high spatial resolution, acceptable temporal resolution, simple calibration, and short preparation time, has been widely used in brain research. Compared with the electroencephalogram (EEG), real-time fMRI-based brain computer interface (rtfMRI-BCI) not only can perform decoding analysis across the whole brain to control external devices, but also allows a subject to voluntarily self-regulate specific brain regions. This paper reviews the basic architecture of rtfMRI-BCI, the emerging machine learning based data analysis approaches (also known as multi-voxel pattern analysis), and the applications and recent advances of rtfMRI-BCI.
