Abstract:ObjectiveThis review aimed to examine the changes of knowledge, attitude and working intention in nursing students after an undergraduate geriatric nursing education.DesignA systematic review of the literature.Data sourcesFive databases which included CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science were searched for this literature review from January 2010 to October 2020.Review methodsThe review was registered in PROSPERO registry with registration number CRD42020215703. The review examined undergraduate nursing education programs in terms of knowledge, attitude and working intention towards geriatric care among undergraduate nursing students as outcomes. We used JBI critical appraisal tools and Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool to evaluate and assess the quality of the retrieved research papers.ResultsThe search yielded 19 studies included in the final review, 14 of which were quantitative studies and five were qualitative studies. Four types of education programs were identified. These were type 1, a four-year undergraduate gerontology program consisting of geriatric theory and geriatric care clinical placement; type 2, stand-alone geriatric subject and geriatric clinical placement program; type 3, integrated geriatric subject and geriatric clinical placement program; type 4, solely geriatric clinical placement program. The review found that the type 2 program demonstrated the best educational outcomes in undergraduate students.ConclusionsThis review provided the most recent literature evidence pertaining to undergraduate geriatric education program and its educational outcomes. Future research should focus on the evaluating the content of each type of geriatric education program to inform the development of undergraduate geriatric nursing education.

Application of Network-Based PBL Model Combined with Role-Playing Method in Geriatric Nursing Teaching

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of using a combination of problem-based learning (PBL) and role-playing methods in geriatric nursing education through online networks. Methods: The research objects of this paper were selected from nursing students, and the number of participants was 200. The research objects were selected from March 2019 to September 2021. The learning situation and related data of the above students were retrospectively analyzed. According to the teaching methods, the students were divided into groups. The students who received traditional teaching methods were included in the control group, with a total of 100 participants. The students who received network-based PBL mode combined with role-playing teaching were included in the observation group, with a total of 100 participants. The assessment results and learning effect evaluation of the two groups of students were compared, and the level of learning engagement and changes in critical thinking between the groups were compared. Results: The scores of basic theoretical knowledge, clinical practice skills, and clinical case analysis of students in the observation group were higher than those of the control group (P < .001). The evaluation index of nursing students' learning effects was analyzed. The proportions of enhancing teacher-student interaction, improving team cooperation ability, improving autonomous learning ability and learning interest, improving analysis and problem-solving ability, improving theory combined with practice ability, improving communication and expression ability, improving work self-confidence, improving knowledge and vision, improving literature retrieval and evaluation ability in the observation group were higher than that in the control group (P < .001). After the teaching work, the overall learning input score, cognitive input score, behavior input score, emotional input score, learning harvest score, and learning satisfaction score of students in the observation group were higher than those of the control group (P < .001). After teaching, the scores of finding the truth, open mind, analytical ability, systematic ability, critical thinking self-confidence, curiosity and cognitive maturity of the students in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (P < .001). Conclusion: The combined application of network-based PBL mode and role-playing method can significantly improve the teaching effects of geriatric nursing, with popularization value.
Effects of Modified PBL Teaching Method on the New Nurse Training in Gerontology Department

Abstract:Objective To explore the effects of modified problem-based learning (PBL) teaching method on new nurse training in geriatric department. Methods From January to December 2016, a total of 63 intern nurses in the Geriatric Department of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital were selected and randomly divided into control group (n=31) and observation group (n=32). The traditional PBL teaching method was applied in the control group, while the modified PBL teaching method was implemented in the observation group. The teaching effects were assessed and compared between the two groups with theoretical examination and practical skill assessment, and nursing teaching effect evaluation scale. Results The results of theoretical examination and practical skill assessment of the observation group were (93.28±3.56) and (95.35±2.64) respectively, which were both significantly higher than those of the control , (85.32±2.94) and (88.81±2.73), and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.001). The teaching effects approval rate of the observation group was higher than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P< 0.05). Conclusions The modified PBL teaching method can help to improve the theoretical level and practical skills of geriatric nurses, and promote the improvement of the teaching quality of nursing.
Effects of TBL teaching on nursing students' knowledge, practical skills and core ability: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Aim This study aims to investigate the comparative effects of the team-based learning methodology against conventional teaching practices on the educational outcomes of nursing students. Background The team-based learning instructional strategy represents a significant pedagogical innovation in nursing education. This approach initiates with foundational knowledge, uses predetermined questions for guidance and adopts both intra-group and inter-group dialogues as mechanisms of learning. It accentuates the creativity and pragmatism of students, thereby enhancing their communicative and collaborative competencies. Although this methodology has garnered recognition among nursing education practitioners in recent years, consensus on its pedagogical efficacy remains elusive. Design The investigation was structured as a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods In August 2024, a comprehensive search was executed across several databases, including PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, OVID, Scoups and CNKI, to identify studies that satisfied predetermined criteria for inclusion and exclusion. The process entailed screening studies against the criteria, extracting pertinent data and assessing the quality of the studies prior to performing a meta-analysis. The review protocol of this study was prospectively registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) (CRD42024513238). Results From an initial pool of 3191 articles, 29 were selected for meta-analysis following a meticulous screening process. Findings indicated that the team-based learning methodology significantly outperformed traditional teaching approaches in enhancing nursing students' final examination scores and practical skills. Moreover, it was observed to bolster self-directed learning and critical thinking capabilities among students. Nonetheless, the impact of team-based learning on improving problem-solving skills and communication skills warrants additional verification. Conclusion The investigation concludes that the team-based learning approach is efficacious in enriching nursing students' theoretical and practical proficiencies, alongside promoting self-directed learning and critical thinking. However, given the constrained number and quality of the studies included, these findings necessitate corroboration through further high-caliber research.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>Global healthcare systems are adapting to meet the demands of an aging population. It is essential to prepare our healthcare workers on complex and unique issues in the treatment of older adults. Past studies have shown that simulated patients are a valuable teaching tool in training current and prospective healthcare professionals. Few studies have examined its use in the geriatric context.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Objectives</h3><p>This scoping review presents the effectiveness of simulated patients in healthcare education for geriatric care and eldercare purposes among current and prospective healthcare professionals.</p><p>Data sources.</p><p>Search on CINAHL, Cochrane, ScienceDirect and Medline were completed on studies published between January 2009 to January 2020. A manual hand searching of reference lists for relevant articles was also conducted.</p><p>Review methods.</p><p>This scoping review follows the methods of Arksey and O-Malley to synthesize the literature on simulated patients in the teaching of geriatric care to current and prospective healthcare professionals. Inclusion criteria were, primary studies, with full-text articles, and in English.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>Fifteen articles were included in this review. These articles were of wide variation by study design, settings, populations. Four broad themes were identified from existing literature: (i) improvement in geriatric knowledge, (ii) improvement in technical and non-technical skills, (iii) greater confidence in clinical and non-clinical skills, and (iv) learners' perception towards simulation as a learning pedagogy.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p>Simulated patients may have potential in improving geriatric education. Students generally enjoyed the learning methodology, finding it engaging and easy to learn by practising. Future studies could consider engaging simulated patients in the teaching pedagogy of geriatric teaching for current or prospective healthcare professionals.</p>

Development and effectiveness of online teaching on practical skills among nursing students: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Objective The purpose of this meta-analysis was to assess the effects of online education for practical skills among nursing students. Methods This research was done by searching PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Science electronic databases from inception to August 18, 2023, to identify English-language articles. Data extraction, quality assessment, and literature screening were carried out independently by two researchers. The Cochrane risk of bias tool and the Methodological Items for Nonrandomized Studies (MINORS) tool were used to assess the risk of bias of the included studies. Meta-analysis was carried out using Review Manager (RevMan) version 5.3 software. Results Eighteen studies involving 2274 nursing students met the inclusion criteria. Nursing students' skills (SMD = 0.43, 95% CI [0.33, 0.54], P <0.00001), knowledge (SMD = 0.16, 95% CI (0.02, 0.30], P = 0.02), satisfaction (SMD = 0.29, 95% CI (0.10, 0.47], P < 0.01), and confidence (SMD = 0.56, 95% CI [0.29, 0.83], P < 0.0001) were all significantly improved by the online teaching intervention compared with traditional face-to-face instruction. Self-efficacy (SMD = 0.1, 95% CI [-0.13, 0.33], P = 0.41) was also improved, but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion Online learning is a novel and efficient approach to teaching practical skills to nursing students. Online education can enhance students' knowledge, skills, confidence, and learning satisfaction, and it is superior to traditional classroom instruction. The findings of this study can serve as a basis for the development of standardized online teaching techniques and assessment metrics.

Abstract:Aim This study aims to evaluate the effect of team-based learning on the core competence of nursing students compared with traditional teaching methods. Background In recent years, team-based learning has been widely used as a learning and teaching method in the world. Not only the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes, but also the core competence is necessary to cope with various clinical situations for nursing students. However, the effect of this new teaching method on core competence of nursing students is not consistent. Design The study was designed according to the preferred reporting entries guidelines statement for systematic reviews and meta-analyses and population, intervention, comparison, outcome and study. Methods Data were collected from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Science Direct and Scopus. The quality of studies was assessed using "The Newcastle Ottawa scale". A random-effect model of meta-analyses was conducted to generate pooled standardized mean differences (SMD) for core competence using Rev Man 5.4.1 software and STATASE 15. Moreover, subgroup, heterogeneity, sensitivity and publication bias analyses were conducted. Results A total of 14 articles with 1,942 participants were included in the meta-analysis. Compared with the traditional pedagogy among nursing students, team-based learning pedagogy significantly increased theoretical performance, professional effects (self-directed learning ability and communication ability) but did not affect practice skills. In addition, one study found that learning attitudes were not improved in students with high or low academic performance. This might mean that the teaching model should be implemented for a long time, which essentially changed students' learning attitudes to improve students' self-directed learning ability and core competence, especially for students with low scores. Conclusions In summary, findings indicated that team-based learning pedagogical approaches might be beneficial to improve teaching quality in nursing education. However, practice skills might not be sensitive to team-based learning because of the seriation of the original course. Nursing educators need to explore teaching strategies to cultivate high-quality nursing talents to cultivate nursing students with core competence and ensure that they are successfully qualified for new employment.

Impact of simulation-based education on the performance assessment, knowledge retention and mentality of nursing students: A systematic review and meta-analysis (Preprint)

Abstract:BACKGROUND Simulation-based education is a new type of teaching method that is suitable for clinic-related majors. OBJECTIVE To determine its impact on clinical skill assessment, performance maintenance, and mentality of nursing students. METHODS After searching PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, and EBSCO database, we conducted a systematic collection of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the impact of simulation-based education on performance evaluation and mentality of nursing students. The retrieval time limit was from the establishment of the database to March 12, 2021. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan5.4 software, and two researchers used ROB2.0 software to evaluate the risk of bias in the included literature. The quality evaluation of the outcome indicators was performed using GRADEpro. A standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used in estimating the pooled effects of RCTs. RESULTS A total of 21 RCTs were performed, including 1683 nursing students. The results of meta-analysis showed that simulation-based education significantly improved the assessment scores of nursing students (SMD = 1.46, 95% CI = 1.02 to 1.90, P < 0.00001), self-confidence (SMD = 1.19, 95% CI = 0.48 to 1.90, P = 0.001), satisfaction (SMD = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.13 to 1.60, P = 0.02), and knowledge retention (SMD = 1.89, 95% CI = 0.76 to 2.87, P = 0.0008), and the difference was statistically significant. The results of subgroup analysis showed that long-term intervention (MD = 1.44, 95% CI = 0.62, 2.26, P = 0.0006) and short-term intervention (MD = 1.46, 95% CI = 0.95, 1.97, P < 0.00001) improved the performance assessment of nursing students, and the difference was statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Simulation-based education can significantly improve the assessment scores, self-confidence, and satisfaction of the nursing students, and the scores can be effectively retained for a period of time. Limited by the quality of the number of included studies, the above conclusions need to be verified by high-quality studies.

Abstract:China's elderly population is on the rise, and there is a growing need for improved education for professionals in geriatric health care and management. "Age-Friendly Interior Design" is a mandatory component of the curriculum for students majoring in aged care and management. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) has been introduced as an innovative teaching model. The study aims to achieve several objectives:1) To compare the knowledge, skills, and interests of students after using Problem-Based Learning (PBL) against predefined criteria. 2) To compare the knowledge, skills, and interests of students after using the Traditional Teaching Method against predefined criteria, and 3)To compare the knowledge, skills, and interests of students after using Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and the Traditional Teaching Method. This research engaged students pursuing degrees in geriatric nursing and management at a university in Sichuan, China. It encompassed both a control group consisting of 42 students and an experimental group with 48 students. The findings indicated that both PBL and traditional teaching methods had a positive impact on enhancing students' knowledge, skills, and interests to some extent. Problem-based learning (PBL) was more effective in improving these aspects than traditional methods with a significance level of 0.05.

Abstract:Introduction Mounting evidence has suggested that novel teaching strategies have a positive impact on the quality and efficiency of medical education. However, the comprehensive evidence about the superiority among various strategies is not clear. To address this issue, we aim to conduct a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) to evaluate the effects of six main strategies on medical education, including case-based learning, problem-based learning, team-based learning, flipped classrooms, simulation-based education and bridge-in, objective, preassessment, participatory learning, postassessment and summary. Methods and analysis A systematic search will be conducted in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library, covering studies published from database inception to November 2023. Randomised controlled trials which evaluated the different teaching methods and meet the eligibility criteria will be included. The effectiveness of medical students' learning, which is evaluated by theoretical test score, experimental or practical test score, will be analysed as the primary outcomes. Besides, the secondary outcomes consist of learning satisfaction of students and formative evaluation score. The study selection and data extraction will be independently performed by two authors. The risk of bias in each study will be assessed using V.2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomised controlled trials. To compare the effects of six teaching strategies, pairwise meta-analysis and NMA will be performed using Rev Man, STATA and R software. Statistical analyses including homogeneity tests, sensitivity analysis, consistency tests, subgroup analysis, Egger's test and publication bias will also be completed. Ethics and dissemination No formal research ethics approval is required because this study is a meta-analysis based on published studies. The results will be disseminated to a peer-reviewed journal for publication. Protocol registration number CRD42023456050.

The Application Effect of the “Diverse and Comprehensive” Evaluation System in the Teaching of Geriatric Nursing Course

Abstract:Elderly nursing is the main course for cultivating elderly nursing talents, and its teaching quality is a key element among geriatric nurses. The purpose of this study is to construct a “Diverse and Comprehensive” evaluation system and explore its potential effect on elderly nursing teaching. An experimental study was conducted on 256 second-year nursing students majoring in nursing at Zaozhuang Vocational College from March to July 2023. The experimental group adopted a “Diverse and Comprehensive” evaluation system, while the control group adopted a single theoretical examination evaluation method. The study found that the final evaluation score of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group (P < 0.05). In addition, the humanistic literacy level of the experimental group students has significantly improved after the start of the class compared to before (P < 0.05). The research results indicate that the application of the “Diverse and Comprehensive” evaluation system in elderly nursing teaching is beneficial for improving students’ learning effectiveness and humanistic literacy.

Abstract:Aim This study aims to investigate the efficacy of the aged simulation suit on undergraduate nursing students' attitudes and empathy toward older adults. Background A new approach to teaching to enhance nursing students' attitudes toward and empathy for older adults involves the use of an aging simulation suit. Design This systematic review and meta-analysis seeks to determine the efficacy of the aged simulation suit on the attitudes and empathy of undergraduate nursing students toward older adults. This protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis was registered as CRD 42023393879 on the PROSPERO database. Methods These systematic review and meta-analysis were performed in February-March 2023. Researchers examined articles published until March 3, 2023. Population, Intervention, Control, Outcomes, Study Design (PICOS) structure was used for search strategy. Databases CINAHL, Cochrane Library, PubMed, PsycINFO and Web of Science, as well as ULAKBIM, Turkish Medline, Turkiye Klinikleri and YOK National Thesis Center, were searched for the articles. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) was used to report this systematic review and meta-analysis. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tools were used to evaluate the methodological quality of a study and the extent to which its design, conduct and analysis addressed the possibility of bias. Results The meta-analyses of attitudes toward older adults included five studies (including 419 nursing students). The intervention group's attitudes toward older adults were found to be similar to those of the control group (SMD: 15.84, Z= 1.98, p= 0.05). The subgroup analyses revealed similarities between intervention group's and the control group's mean score on attitudes toward older adults (SMD: 4.85, Z=0.70, p=0.48, for RCT; SMD: 23.05, Z= 2.02, p=0.04, for quasi-experimental). Three studies (involving 207 nursing students) revealed significantly higher mean empathy score for the control group compared with the intervention group following the intervention (SMD: 7.08, Z=4.82, p=0.00001). The subgroup analyses revealed statistically significantly higher mean level of empathy for the control group compared with the intervention group was after the intervention (SMD: 7.49, Z=3.15, p=0.002, for RCT; SMD: 6.83, Z= 3.65, p=0.0003, for quasi-experimental). Conclusions Nursing students should be aware of older adults' feelings and experiences aging-related changes and aged simulation interventions can be a useful intervention to allow students to empathize with an older adult.

The effectiveness of serious games on undergraduate nursing students' knowledge and skills: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Aim: To determine the effect of serious games on undergraduate nursing students by the meta-analysis method. Background: There is a need for greater focus on enhancing the knowledge and skills of undergraduate nursing students. Generation Z students desire active engagement in the learning process. When compare with conventional learning approaches, serious games can enhance pupil interest by making the learning process more captivating. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Method: A total of nine databases were systematically searched from inception to April 2024. The Cochrane RoB-2 tool and the Joanna Brigg's Institute Critical Appraisal Tool for quasi-experimental designs were used to undertake quality appraisal. A narrative synthesis, a meta-analysis and subgroup analysis were conducted to analyze the study outcomes. Results: In the study, 19 experimental studies included 14 randomized controlled trials and five quasi-experimental studies. When compare with control groups, serious games in RCTs showed significant improvements in knowledge (SMD 1.24, 95 % CI 0.52-1.96; P<0.001) and skills (SMD 0.50, 95 % CI 0.13-0.87; P<0.01). Subgroup analysis for technical skills outcomes demonstrated that serious games in RCTs were more effective than control groups (SMD 0.62, 95 % CI 0.20-1.05; P<0.001). Conclusion: Serious games had a beneficial impact on the knowledge and skills of undergraduate nursing students. In the context of serious game intervention, it is imperative to carefully consider the approach.

Abstract:Geriatric nursing is the main course for cultivating elderly nursing talents. The teaching quality of geriatric nursing is the key element of training elderly nursing talents. Therefore, it is of great significance to improve the classroom teaching quality of geriatric nursing. The purpose of this study is to construct a four-subject and four-dimension evaluation system and explore its application effect in geriatric nursing teaching. From February 2022 to July 2022, an experimental study was conducted on 185 sophomore nursing students from Zaozhuang Vocational College. The experimental group adopted the four-subject and four-dimension evaluation system, while the control group adopted the summative evaluation method. The study found that the scores of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group (P<0.05). In addition, the academic evaluation of the experimental group was significantly improved (P<0.05). The results show that the application of four subjects and four dimensions evaluation system in geriatric nursing teaching is conducive to improving students' learning effect and comprehensive ability.
Evidence-based practice attitudes, knowledge and skills of nursing students and nurses, a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Aim/objective: This study aims to carry out a meta-analysis of attitudes, knowledge, and skills level of nursing students and nurses in EBP, providing a reference for optimizing EBP education strategies. Background: At present, no meta-analysis has been performed to quantitatively synthesize the attitudes, knowledge and skill levels of nursing students and nurses toward EBP. This makes it difficult to precisely identify the true level of EBP among nurses, implying that there is no evidence to support the adoption of EBP teaching strategies approaches. Design: A total of 9 Chinese and English databases including CNKI, Wan fang, VIP, CBM, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and CINAHL were used to search cross-sectional quantitative articles on EBP attitudes, knowledge and skills level of nurses and nursing students. The search time limit was from the inception of the database to September 2023. Methods: Two researchers independently screened the literature and extracted the data. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) was used to assess the quality of the included studies. Stata15.0 software was used for statistical analysis to summarize the scores of EBP attitude, knowledge and skills level of nursing students and nurses included in the study. Results: A total of 25 cross-sectional studies from 13 countries were included, involving 11363 nursing students and nurses. The meta-analysis results revealed that nursing students and nurses lacked evidence-based practical knowledge and skills, with pooled mean scores of 3.06 (95 % CI: 2.72, 3.39), 2.91 (95 % CI: 2.60, 3.22), 4.31 (95 % CI: 4.08, 4.54) and 4.45 (95 % CI: 4.20, 4.70). In contrast, nursing students and nurses revealed a positive attitude towards EBP, with pooled mean scores of 3.57 (95 % CI: 3.28, 3.86) and 5.11 (95 % CI: 4.80, 5.42). Subgroup analysis revealed that senior nursing students and nurses with master's degree or above had higher attitudes, knowledge and skills. Conclusions: In summary, nursing students and nurses have a positive attitude towards EBP. However, they seem to lack the necessary knowledge and skills. Therefore, nursing educators should consider this as an opportunity to strengthen the teaching of their evidence-based practical knowledge and skills. This will lay a reference for developing nursing discipline.

Abstract:BackgroundWith the aging of the population comes a greater need for geriatric and gerontology teaching. However, there is currently a dearth of investigations on the impact of different educational methodologies for teaching in this area early in medical courses. The present study aims to determine the impact of two educational strategies on the topic “Geriatrics and Gerontology” (“experiencing aging” and “myths of aging”) as compared to a control group (no intervention) on the attitudes, empathy and knowledge of first year medical students.MethodsAn intervention-based study in education was conducted at the beginning of the first year of a medical course. Students submitted to educational strategies were compared against students with no intervention. The two strategies were: “Experiencing Aging” – also known as the “aging game” (simulation of the disabilities and physiological changes of aging), and “Myths of Aging” - a knowledge discussion based on a “quiz show”, questioning common myths about aging. All students were assessed on their attitudes towards older persons (Maxwell-Sullivan, UCLA attitudes), empathy (Maxwell-Sullivan), knowledge on facts and positive view about aging (Palmore), and cognitive knowledge. Data were analysed using Student’s t, Chi-squared or ANOVA tests.ResultsA total of 230 students were assessed. The “experiencing aging” intervention was associated with improvement in empathy but worsening of attitude. The “myths of aging” intervention was associated with an improved attitude overall and positive view about aging but with no change in empathy towards older persons.ConclusionEducational strategies can influence the attitudes and empathy of students, leading to different outcomes. These data highlight the importance of assessing the outcomes of educational strategies in medical teaching to ascertain in what manner (how), situations (when) and settings (where) these activities should be introduced.

Lecture-simulation-combined Education Improve Nursing Undergraduates’ Knowledge and Attitude for Palliative Care

Abstract:Continuous improvement for the teaching method is security for promoting the quality of palliative care. The didactic lecture and simulation-based learning were always used independently, which may negatively affect the results of palliative care education. This research aimed to explore the effectiveness of lecture–simulation-combined education in improving nursing undergraduates' knowledge and attitude of palliative care. A quasi-experimental single-group pre/post-test design was adopted to evaluate the variables with a sample of voluntary fifty-two nursing undergraduates before and after an 18-hour lecture-simulation-combined palliative care course. The course was composed of two hours didactic lecture, ten hours of lecture-simulation-combined learning, and six hours of simulation practise. Two questionnaires, named Palliative Care Quiz for Nursing and Frommelt Attitude towards Care of the Dying , were used to evaluate students' knowledge and attitude of palliative care before and after the course. By paired sample t -test, the results showed increased scores in students' knowledge ( p <0.05) and attitude ( p <0.05) after the course. Lecture-simulation-combined education is an effective strategy to improve nursing students' knowledge and attitude of palliative care. Lecture-simulation-combined education could either be good at equipping students with theoretical knowledge, but also be capable of helping students to construct a positive attitude on palliative care. https://doi.org/10.26803/ijlter.19.8.5
Great geriatric syndromes: Acquisition of nursing competencies and undergraduate nursing students' perceptions through high-fidelity simulation training

Abstract:Background: The constant increase in the aging population will lead to a greater demand for high-quality nursing care for this population over the coming years. Early detection and proper treatment of great geriatric syndromes are essential and, consequently, geriatric nurses must acquire the necessary competencies for their adequate management. Objectives: To evaluate the acquisition of the necessary nursing competencies for adequate management of great geriatric syndromes through high-fidelity simulation training and to explore undergraduate nursing students' perceptions about this training. Methods: 80 undergraduate nursing students participated in a mixed methods study. The simulated scenarios recreated older patients with diagnoses of great geriatric syndromes using standardized patients. Nursing competencies were evaluated using a verification list. 10 focus groups were interviewed to explore their perceptions, conducting a qualitative study with an interpretative approach. Results: Most of the students (86.55 %) acquired the necessary nursing competencies for adequate management of great geriatric syndromes. The nursing students stated that they improved their communication skills (provide solutions to older patients; facilitate and redirect the clinical interview; contrast the information given to the patient), psychological resources (psychological support; physical contact and accompaniment; empathy and persuasion), and geriatric knowledge (identify their lack of knowledge; recognize their limits in terms of healthcare and refer to other health professionals; know the patient's conditions) to provide quality care for older people diagnosed with great geriatric syndromes. Conclusions: The use of high-fidelity simulation training including standardized patients makes it easier for nursing students to acquire the necessary nursing competencies for adequate management of great geriatric syndromes and improve their clinical skills. Geriatric nursing education should focus on equipping nursing students with the necessary clinical skills, integrating high-fidelity simulation training in geriatric study plans to train students in the nursing care to be provided to older patients, and preparing them for real clinical practice.

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate the effects of high-fidelity simulation training on attitudes towards older people and empathy among undergraduate nursing students. Background: People worldwide are living longer and, consequently, the number of older people is increasing globally. Geriatric syndromes are highly prevalent and associated with increased morbidity and mortality in this population. Positive attitudes towards older people and high levels of empathy are necessary for the provision of high-quality nursing care, which will contribute towards improving the quality of life of older patients affected by these syndromes. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted using a longitudinal design with a single group and a pre- and post-intervention evaluation. The development of attitudes towards older people and empathy skills were evaluated using high-fidelity simulation-based training, comparing the levels obtained in these skills at baseline and after the simulation experience. The simulated scenarios recreated the great geriatric syndromes in older patients: instability, immobility, intellectual impairment and incontinence. Results: After the simulation sessions, nursing students significantly improved their total scores for both attitudes toward older people and empathy, moreover, improvements were found in the three subscales of empathy. The effect size was large for the total scores of both the attitudes towards older people and the empathy scales and the 'perspective taking' subscale. The obtained effect size was small for the 'compassionate care' subscale, whereas for the 'standing in the patient's shoes' subscale, the obtained effect size was medium. Conclusions: Our high-fidelity simulation-based training allows undergraduate nursing students to improve their empathy levels and positive attitudes toward older people. The development of these skills may provide benefits directly related to high-quality care for older patients. Therefore, the inclusion of simulation training programs in geriatric nursing study plans is necessary to train nursing students in the care of older people and to prepare them for real clinical practice.
