Abstract:Hypothesis: Acoustic levitation is a suitable approach for studying processes occurring at the gas-liquid interfaces, as it allows its investigation in a contact-free manner while providing control over the gas phase. Here, we hypothesize that phase transitions induced by a CO2 rich atmosphere can be examined, at different length scales, in a contact-free manner. Experimental: A system consisting of 12-hydroxysteric acid (HSA) soaps mixed with different ratios of monoethanolamine (MEA) and choline hydroxide, was prepared. Microliter droplets of the samples were acoustically levitated and monitored with a camera, while exposed to CO2 to modify the pH through diffusion at the air-liquid interface and inside the droplet. The phase transition and water mobility in the levitated droplets were evaluated through X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) and magnetic resonance studies, in real-time. Finally, the droplets were collected and examined under the microscope. Findings: The introduction of CO2 gas induced a phase transition from micelles to multi-lamellar tubes, resulting in a gel-like behavior both in the bulk and at the interface. The high stability of the acoustic levitator allowed the investigation of this dynamic phenomenon, in real-time, in a contact-free environment. This study showcases the suitability of acoustic levitation as a tool to investigate complex chemical processes at interfaces.

Abstract:Grazing-Incidence Small Angle X-ray Scattering (GISAXS) offers the ability to probe large sample areas, providing three-dimensional structural information at high detail in a thin film geometry. In this study we exploit the application of GISAXS to structures formed at one step of the LiNe (Liu-Nealey) flow using chemical patterns for directed self-assembly of block copolyilier lilnis. Experiments coltducted at the Argoinie National Laboratory provided scattering patterns probing film characteristics at both parallel and normal directions to the surface. We demonstrate the application of new computational methods to construct models based on scattering measured. SUCh analysis allows for extraction of structural characteristics at unprecedented dett-til.
[Importance of oral signs in the diagnosis of atypical forms of celiac disease].

Abstract:The dramatic improvement in knowledge concerning celiac disease (CD) has disclosed the pattern of the associated clinical manifestations and the often atypical or silent presentation of this disease, which makes clinical diagnosis difficult. Also oral manifestations, mostly recurrent apthous stomatitis (RAS) and dental enamel hypoplasia, are atypical signs of CD. Our opinion about the possibility of performing mass-screening to reveal atypical or silent CD is in agreement whit who is asserting that a sistematical case-finding is, at present, the most suitable epidemiological approach. So, we think that patients affected by RAS, or dental enamel hypoplasia, should be considered, even in the absence of any gastrointestinal symptom, at-risk subjects, and should therefore undergo diagnostic procedure for CD.
Dialysate to plasma solute concentration (D/P) versus peritoneal transport parameters in CAPD.

Abstract:The relationship between dialysate to plasma solute equilibration ratio (D/P) and diffusive (diffusive mass transport coefficients, KBD) as well as convective (sieving coefficient, S, and net ultrafiltration) transport characteristics were studied in clinically stable CAPD patients and in patients with loss of ultrafiltration capacity (UFC). Forty-one 6-h single-dwell studies with standard glucose-based dialysis fluids containing 1.36% (n = 9), 2.27% (n = 9), and 3.86% (n = 23) anhydrous glucose were carried out in 33 clinically stable CAPD patients. Eleven patients with loss of UFC were studied with 3.86% glucose solution. Intraperitoneal dialysate volumes were calculated from the dilution of the tracer (131I-albumin) with a correction applied for its elimination from the peritoneal cavity. KBD and S were estimated using the Pyle-Popovich-Moncrief model with aqueous plasma concentrations. A theoretical D/P curve was derived with and without taking convective transport and peritoneal reabsorption into account. The three different glucose solutions yielded D/P curves which were similar for urea and potassium. For creatinine a slower equilibration and for glucose and sodium a faster decrease in dialysate concentration were observed with more hypertonic solutions. In general, there was a strong correlation which was best at 240 min between D/P (for glucose dialysate/initial dialysate concentration, D/Do) and KBD for all solutes (except sodium), whereas the correlation between D/P and convective transport parameters was much weaker. KBD for creatinine (with 3.86% glucose solution) could be estimated (r = 0.98) from aqueous D/P using the experimental formula: creatinine KBD = -1.8 - ln (1 - D240/P)/0.1. Patients with loss of UFC due to increased diffusive transport (n = 8) could be discriminated from the clinically stable patients using KBD and D/P (or D/D0) for creatinine and glucose or D/P for sodium. However, patients with loss of UFC associated with increased peritoneal reabsorption (n = 2) could not be identified using these parameters. Theoretically derived D/P curves were in excellent agreement with measured D/P for 1.36% glucose solution and simulations were satisfactory also for the 2.27% and 3.86% solutions provided that the effect of convective transport was taken into account. The standardized peritoneal equilibration tests (PET) as proposed by Twardowski et al. [17] seems to be appropriately designed as regards duration of the dwell and the choice of glucose and creatinine as investigated solutes. Thus, PET can be recommended as a sensitive routine investigation for the monitoring of normal/abnormal peritoneal transport behaviour in peritoneal dialysis patients.

Abstract:Three varied sample environments (glass slide, oil film, and in levitation) are employed for the assembly of lyotropic liquid crystals through evaporation‐induced self‐assembly. Acoustic levitation emerges as a robust method to induce phase transition, offering rapid phase diagrams with minimal sample volume and shorter analysis time compared to conventional methods. Evaporation‐induced self‐assembly (EISA) is a versatile method for generating organized superstructures from colloidal particles, offering diverse design possibilities through the manipulation of colloid size, shape, substrate nature, and environmental conditions. While some work highlighted the potential of EISA to investigate phase transitions of inorganic liquid crystals, the influence of sample environment to determine their phase diagrams is often overlooked. In this work, the self‐assembly of lyotropic liquid crystals is compared by EISA on substrates, and by acoustic levitation (absence of substrate). The focus is on imogolite nanotubes, a model colloidal system of 1D charged objects, due to their tunable morphology and rich liquid‐crystalline phase behavior. It demonstrates the feasibility to obtain phase transitions in levitating droplets and on soft hydrophobic substrates, whereas self‐assembly is limited on rigid hydrophilic supports. Moreover, the aspect ratio of the nanotubes proves to be a pivotal factor, influencing both transitions and the resulting materials shape and surface. Besides material shaping, acoustic levitation emerges as a promising method for studying phase transitions by EISA, toward the rapid establishment of phase diagrams from diluted to highly concentrated states using a limited volume of sample.

Abstract:Acoustic droplet ejection (ADE) enables crystallization experiments at the low-nanoliter scale, resulting in rapid vapor diffusion equilibration dynamics and efficient reagent usage in the empirical discovery of structure-enabling protein crystallization conditions. We extend our validation of this technology applied to the diverse physicochemical property space of aqueous crystallization reagents where dynamic fluid analysis coupled to ADE aids in accurate and precise dispensations. Addition of crystallization seed stocks, chemical additives, or small-molecule ligands effectively modulates crystallization, and we here provide examples in optimization of crystal morphology and diffraction quality by the acoustic delivery of ultra-small volumes of these cofactors. Additional applications are discussed, including set up of in situ proteolysis and alternate geometries of crystallization that leverage the small scale afforded by acoustic delivery. Finally, we describe parameters of a system of automation in which the acoustic liquid handler is integrated with a robotic arm, plate centrifuge, peeler, sealer, and stacks, which allows unattended high-throughput crystallization experimentation.

From Nuclei to Micro-Structure in Colloidal Crystallization: Investigating Intermediate Length Scales by Small Angle Laser Light Scattering

Abstract:Hard sphere suspensions are well recognized model systems of statistical physics and soft condensed matter. We here investigate the temporal evolution of the immediate environment of nucleating and growing crystals and/or their global scale distribution using time resolved Small Angle Light Scattering (SALS). Simultaneously performed Bragg scattering (BS) measurements provide an accurate temporal gauging of the sequence of events. We apply this approach to studies of re-crystallization in several different shear molten hard sphere and attractive hard sphere samples with the focus being on the diversity of observable signal shapes and their change in time. We demonstrate that depending on the preparation conditions different processes occur on length scales larger than the structural scale which significantly influence both the crystallization kinetics and the final micro-structure. By careful analysis of the SALS signal evolution and by comparing different suggestions for small angle signal shapes to our data we can for most cases identify the processes leading to the observed signals. These include phase contrast form factor scattering from depletion zones during formation and overlap as well as during gelation, amplitude contrast form factor scattering by more transparent crystals, and structure factor scattering from late stage inter-crystallite ordering. The large variety of different small angle signals thus in principle contains valuable information complementary to that gained from Bragg scattering or microscopy. Our comparison, however, also shows that further refinement and adaptation of the theoretical expressions to the sample specific boundary conditions is desired for a quantitative kinetic analysis of micro-structural evolution.

Drop Dissolution Intensified by Acoustic Levitation

Abstract:Acoustic levitation can provide significant benefits for many fundamental research questions. However, it is important to consider that the acoustic field influences the measurement environment. This work focuses on the dissolution of immobilised drops using acoustic levitation in liquid–liquid systems. Previous work demonstrated that the acoustic field of standing waves impacts mass transfer by affecting the spread of dissolved substances in the continuous phase in two distinct ways: (I) solutes may either pass through nodal planes of the standing waves or (II) not pass. The binary systems examined for case (I) are 1-hexanol–water and 1-butanol–water, and for case (II), n-butyl acetate–water and toluene–water. This work quantifies the intensification effect of acoustic levitation on dissolution for the two types of behaviour, by comparing them with reference measurements of mechanically attached dissolving drops. The system was designed to ensure minimal intensification. The minimum intensification of mass transfer for levitating drops in the used setup of case (I) was 25%, and for case (II), it was 65%, both increasing with decreasing surface-equivalent diameter. With this understanding, acoustic levitation can be used more accurately in the field of mass transfer studies.

Abstract:Single particle analysis is essential for a better understanding of the particle transformation process and to predict its environmental impact. In this study, we developed an aerosol optical tweezer (AOT) Raman spectroscopy system to investigate the phase state and morphology of suspended aerosol droplets in real time. The system comprises four modules: optical trapping, reaction, illumination and imaging, and detection. The optical trapping module utilizes a 532 nm laser and a 100 × oil immersion objective to stably trap aerosol droplets within 30 s. The reaction module allows us to adjust relative humidity (RH) and introduce reaction gases into the droplet levitation chamber, facilitating experiments to study liquid–liquid phase transitions. The illumination and imaging module employs a high-speed camera to monitor the trapped droplets, while the detector module records Raman scattering light. We trapped sodium chloride (NaCl) and 3-methyl glutaric acid (3-MGA) mixed droplets to examine RH-dependent morphology changes. Liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) occurred when RH was decreased. Additionally, we introduced ozone and limonene/pinene to generate secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles in situ, which collided with the trapped droplet and dissolved in it. To determine the trapped droplet's characteristics, we utilized an open-source program based on Mie theory to retrieve diameter and refractive index from the observed whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in Raman spectra. It is found that mixed droplets formed core–shell morphology when RH was decreased, and the RH dependence of the droplets' phase transitions generated by different SOA precursors varied. Our AOT system serves as an essential experimental platform for in situ assessment of morphology and phase state during dynamic atmospheric processes.
Simultaneous Crystallization Effects in Multiple Levitated Plasma-Functionalized Graphene Nanoflake Nanofluid Droplets

Abstract:Acoustic levitation is a container-free method for examining novel crystallization effects, though liquid-to-solid phase change has seen little investigation for levitated nanofluids. Recent developments have allowed for examining the morphological and temperature evolution of multiple levitated nanofluid droplets freezing simultaneously. The fundamental effect of adding nanoparticles to a levitated crystallization system is crystal growth rate enhancement from improved mass transfer at the growing solid front. Nucleation times are unaffected as freezing is initiated by secondary ice nucleation particles (INPs). Instead, the enhancement produces higher instantaneous nucleation pressures and more cracking in the primary ice shell. In turn, more INPs are ejected, resulting in faster protrusion formation on the droplet surface (hastened further in systems containing adjacent droplets). The crystal matrix also includes more defects, resulting in liquid escaping and forming beads at the droplet base and optical clarity loss. During crystal decomposition, thermal gradients create convective currents dampened by the same transport phenomena that enhance crystal growth. Suspension loss after a crystallization-decomposition cycle reduced opacity and light absorbance such that the droplets were 62% closer in appearance to water. However, the non-isobaric, sample-encompassing cooling process resulted in smaller particle clusters than if the droplets were frozen on a solid surface.

Abstract:The condensation of biomolecules into biomolecular condensates via liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) is a ubiquitous mechanism that drives cellular organization. To enable these functions, biomolecules have evolved to drive LLPS and facilitate partitioning into biomolecular condensates. Determining the molecular features of proteins that encode LLPS will provide critical insights into a plethora of biological processes. Problematically, probing biomolecular dense phases directly is often technologically difficult or impossible. By capitalizing on the symmetry between the conformational behavior of biomolecules in dilute solution and dense phases, it is possible to infer details critical to phase separation by precise measurements of the dilute phase thus circumventing complicated characterization of dense phases. The symmetry between dilute and dense phases is found in the size and shape of the conformational ensemble of a biomolecule - parameters that small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) is ideally suited to probe. Recent technological advances have made it possible to accurately characterize samples of intrinsically disordered protein regions at low enough concentration to avoid interference from intermolecular attraction, oligomerization or aggregation, all of which were previously roadblocks to characterizing self-assembling proteins. Herein, we describe the pitfalls inherent to measuring such samples, the details required for circumventing these issues and analysis methods that place the results of SAXS measurements into the theoretical framework of LLPS.

Chemical and physical information was obtained by real-time near infrared (NIRS) and Raman spectroscopy measurements. The recrystallisation kinetic parameters (overall recrystallisation rate constant β and the time needed to reach 50% of the equilibrated level t50), were determined using a multivariate curve resolution approach.

Abstract:Structures of molecular crystals are identified using scattering techniques because we cannot see inside them. Micrometre-sized colloidal particles enable the real-time observation of crystallization with optical microscopy, but in practice this is still hampered by a lack of 'X-ray vision'. Here we introduce a system of index-matched fluorescently labelled colloidal particles and demonstrate the robust formation of ionic crystals in aqueous solution, with structures that can be controlled by size ratio and salt concentration. Full three-dimensional coordinates of particles are distinguished through in situ confocal microscopy, and the crystal structures are identified via comparison of their simulated scattering pattern with known atomic arrangements. Finally, we leverage our ability to look inside colloidal crystals to observe the motion of defects and crystal melting in time and space and to reveal the origin of crystal twinning. Using this platform, the path to real-time analysis of ionic colloidal crystallization is now 'crystal clear'.

Resolving dynamic fragmentation of liquids at the nanoscale with ultrafast small-angle X-ray scattering

Abstract:High-brightness coherent ultrashort X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) are promising in resolving nanoscale structures at the highest temporal resolution (∼10 fs). The feasibility is explored of resolving ultrafast fragmentation of liquids at the nanoscale with single-shot small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) on the basis of large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. Fragmentation of liquid sheets under adiabatic expansion is investigated. From the simulated SAXS patterns, particle-volume size distributions are obtained with the regularization method and average particle sizes with the weighted Guinier method, at different expansion rates. The particle sizes obtained from simulated SAXS are in excellent agreement with direct cluster analysis. Pulse-width effects on SAXS measurements are examined. The results demonstrate the feasibility of resolving the nanoscale dynamics of fragmentation and similar processes with SAXS, and provide guidance for future XFEL experiments and data interpretation.

Abstract:The fundamental understanding of nanostructures of liquid electrolytes is expected to enable transformative gains in electrochemical energy storage capacities. However, the solvation structures and molecular dynamics in electrolytes are hard to probe, which limits further performance improvements in macroscopic properties such as ionic conductivity, viscosity, and stability. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), a non-destructive method for nanostructures characterization in liquids, offers a unique perspective on molecular clusters, anion-cation pairs, solvation sheath, percolating network, aggregates, and domain sizes of electrolytes. Notably, the SAXS method has excellent time-resolution, enabling the study of molecular dynamics by operando characterization. This review focuses on the microscopic understanding of liquid electrolytes by SAXS and operando SAXS. The unique capabilities of X-ray scattering for intra- and inter-molecular relationship and nanostructure characterization of electrolytes are highlighted.

Abstract:The surfaces of crystalline particles are often charged and therefore crystals have an electrical double layer associated with their surfaces when, for example, suspended in an aqueous medium. Under the influence of an external electric field, an electrical dipole moment can be induced due to polarization of the electrical double layer. The complex impedance, conductivity, relaxation time and phase shift caused by the polarization are all related to particle characteristics, e.g. the size, polymorph and concentration. The method of electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) provides, potentially, a capability for characterizing the particles in colloidal suspensions. Here some preliminary observations of physical-chemistry fundamentals relating to the use of electrical impedance spectroscopy, potentially, for particle sizing in crystallisation processes are reported. Firstly, the effects of l-glutamic acid (LGA) solids concentration, solute concentration and temperature on the measured EIS spectra were studied. The results show that the effects of solid LGA concentration and solute concentration on the relaxation frequency and phase angle are very small. Secondly, the temperature effect was analysed. By deducting the contribution due to the changes in concentration and temperature from the total change in relaxation frequency, the experimental observations, although preliminary in nature, suggest that the crystal size can be related directly to relaxation frequency (in this study, the shape of LGA crystals is assumed to be spherical so the crystal size means the diameter of the sphere). The experimental observations can be explained with either static polarization models or particle vibration models. On-line measurement of electrical impedance spectra associated with LGA nucleation–growth processes are presented. The information content of the complex electrical impedance, phase angle shift and relaxation times of the crystal suspensions during a crystallisation process is assessed. The results show that during nucleation the imaginary part of the electrical-impedance response changes significantly and the relaxation frequency decreases during the growth of crystals. The longer-term objective is to develop a new spectroscopic measurement method and further, a spectroscopic tomography technique for on-line measurement of the spatial distribution of particle size in particle suspensions in liquid media.

Deliquescence phase transition measurements by quartz crystal microbalance frequency shifts

Abstract:Measurements of the hygroscopic properties of aerosols are needed to better understand the role of aerosols as cloud condensation nuclei. Several techniques have been used to measure deliquescence (solid to liquid) phase transitions in particular. In this study, we have measured the deliquescence relative humidity (DRH) of organic and inorganic salts, organic acids (glutaric and succinic acid), and mixtures of organic acids with ammonium sulfate using a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The QCM allows for measurement of the deliquescence phase transition due to inherent measurement differences between solids and liquids in the oscillation frequency of a quartz crystal. The relative humidity dependent frequency measurements can be used to identify compounds that adsorb monolayer amounts of water or form hydrates prior to deliquescence (e.g., lithium chloride, potassium and sodium acetate). Although the amount of water uptake by a deliquescing material cannot be quantified with this technique, deliquescence measurements of mixtures of hygroscopic and nonhygroscopic components (e.g., ammonium sulfate and succinic acid (DRH > 95%)) show that the mass fraction of the deliquescing portion of the sample can be quantitatively determined from the relative change in oscillation frequency at deliquescence. The results demonstrate the use of this technique as an alternative method for phase transition measurements and as a direct measurement of the mass fraction of a sample that undergoes deliquescence. Further, deliquescence measurements by the QCM may provide improved understanding of discrepancies in atmospheric particle mass measurements between filter samples and the tapered element oscillating microbalance given the similar measurement principle employed by the QCM.
Droplet-based in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy cell for studying crystallization processes at the tender X-ray energy range

Abstract:The understanding of nucleation and crystallization is fundamental in science and technology. In solution, these processes are complex involving multiple transformations from ions and ion pairs through amorphous intermediates to multiple crystalline phases. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), which is sensitive to liquid, amorphous and crystalline phases offers prospects of demystifying these processes. However, for low Z elements the use of in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy requires the tender X-ray range, which is often limited by vacuum requirements thereby complicating these measurements. To overcome these challenges, we developed a versatile and user-friendly droplet-based in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy cell for studying crystallization processes. Time-resolved in situ experiments under ambient conditions are carried out in the cell whilst the cell is mounted in the vacuum chamber of a tender X-ray beamline. By following changes in the Ca K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), we captured in situ the intermediate phases involved during calcium carbonate crystallization from aqueous solutions. In addition, through linear combination fitting it was possible to qualitatively observe the evolution of each phase during the reaction demonstrating the potential of the cell in studying complex multiphase chemical processes.

Abstract:Two-dimensional colloidal crystals assembled from polystyrene nanospheres have emerged as a pivotal foundation for fabricating large-area nano-functional surfaces. These assemblies, defined by their hexagonal close-packed configuration and interlaced with grain boundaries, have garnered significant attention for applications in plasmonic structures, catalysts, photonic crystals, and inverse opals. Nonetheless, achieving consistent large-scale regularity has proven challenging due to unpredictable crystal growth and the introduction of defects. Utilizing acoustic waves excited from the airside, our experiments demonstrate the significant effects of such waves on the self-assembly process, leading to larger crystal domains and reduced defects. In comparison to the extensively studied water-end excitation techniques, our air-end excitation method introduces a novel dynamic in regulating colloidal monolayer crystallization and presents a comprehensive analysis of varying acoustic parameters, frequency, amplitude, and waveform. These findings reveal the potential of airside acoustic annealing in refining the structure of two-dimensional colloidal arrays. To elucidate our experimental observations, we delve into the theoretical underpinnings of particle dynamics, driven by classical hydromechanical constraints like surface tension and gravity. Using a qualitative estimate, we shed light on the resonant excitations and their potential role in optimizing the self-assembly process, especially focusing on resonances pertinent for enhancing cluster enlargements. Conclusively, our research, steeped in robust theoretical frameworks and groundbreaking experimental techniques, offers a multifaceted solution for perfecting two-dimensional colloidal arrays. This combined approach not only broadens the scope of acoustically induced crystallization but also charts a path for its adoption across diverse environments, signaling transformative prospects for nanomanufacturing and optical research.
