Abstract:Purpose The present study aims to evaluate students' perceptions of different types of written assessment within the context of dental materials science and to identify how various learning styles exhibited by dental students, as well as gender and ethnicity, may influence their perceptions of these assessment methods. Methods The study was conducted among second‐year dental students in a dental materials science class, during which students participated in a mock assessment that included extended matching questions (EMQs) and single correct answer (SCA) questions. An online questionnaire comprising three sections: demographic information, Honey and Mumford's Learning Styles Questionnaire, and 15 closed‐ended questionnaire items employing a 5‐point Likert scale were administered to assess students' perceptions of the assessment methods. Statistical analyses were conducted using the Kruskal‐Wallis test, Mann‐Whitney U test, and a post‐hoc Bonferroni test. Results All 70 students participated in the study with the majority being female, Chinese, and activist learners. Median total scores among various learning styles, gender, and ethnicity did not exhibit significant differences. Analysis of individual questionnaire items revealed mixed perceptions regarding EMQs. Reflectors generally held more positive perceptions of EMQs, while theorists showed the lowest total median scores toward EMQs. Most students did not prefer EMQs over SCAs, and some students expressed confusion about EMQs, especially those with a theorist learning style. Conclusion Although students generally showed good perceptions towards these assessment methods, further research is needed to better understand the interplay of learning styles, assessment preferences, and educational outcomes in dental education.

Abstract:Abstract Objective A large number of digital tools supporting students have emerged over recent years which are encouraged in tutoring. A study conducted at the University of Montpellier (France) among 3rd, 4th, and 5th year dentistry students aimed primarily to identify the type of pedagogical support the students preferred according to their discipline. The secondary aim was to evaluate the student satisfaction after establishing a new pedagogical support. Materials and Methods A total of 165 questionnaires were completed. The main questions concerned pedagogical use of information technology and multimedia tools, choice of dentistry disciplines most justifying their use, and pedagogical gaps in these disciplines. Next, a program of pedagogical videos was developed for the most corresponding discipline. A satisfaction survey was finally conducted. Results Nearly 95.7% of students found online classes and E-learning via the virtual learning environment useful, with the most requested type being video. Demand was stronger in conservative dentistry and endodontics (27%), prosthetics (19%), and periodontology (18%). The most apprehended disciplines were endodontics in the 3rd year, endodontics and prosthetics in the 4th year, and prosthetics in the 5th year. Regarding satisfaction, 100% of students appreciated these videos and 99.4% considered they fulfilled expectations. Conclusion All students requested videos, especially for clinical subjects such as endodontics. With digital technology, our world is experiencing a technological revolution resulting in many daily life changes. With students evolving in a digitally saturated society, our ways of learning and teaching need rethinking. Digital technology can help improve learning effectiveness and develop pedagogical practices more adapted to today's students.
Innovative Pedagogical Strategies in Health Professions Education: Active Learning in Dental Materials Science

Abstract:Dental materials science education is frequently delivered via traditional didactic lectures in preclinical dental programs. This review aimed to appraise the current evidence on innovative pedagogical strategies in teaching dental materials science courses. English-language articles on teaching methods for dental materials science published between January 1990 to October 2022 were searched in nine online databases (Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science [WoS], Science Direct, Cochrane Library, EBSCO, LILACS, Open Grey, and EMBASE) according to PRISMA guidelines. The risk of bias (RoB) was assessed using the Cochrane RoB-2 and ROBIN-I tools, whereas the level of evidence was determined based on the OCEBM guidelines. Only 12 primary studies were included. Two randomized studies (RCTs) were deemed as being of "some concern", and one showed a high risk of bias (RoB). Three non-randomized controlled studies (NRS) demonstrated a moderate RoB, whereas the remaining seven were low. Most studies were ranked at Levels 2 and 3 of evidence. Several innovative pedagogical strategies were identified: flipped classrooms, clinical-based learning, computer-assisted learning, group discussion, microteaching with the BOPPPS (bridge-in, learning objective, pre-test, participatory learning, post-test, and summary) model, and game-based learning. The evidence suggested that students generally showed positive perceptions toward these pedagogical strategies. Dental educators should revise their current undergraduate dental materials science curricula and integrate more effective teaching methods.
Teaching strategy adaptations in undergraduate dental education during the COVID‐19 pandemic

Abstract:Background During the COVID‐19 pandemic, dental institutions were challenged to rapidly adapt to the inability of teaching in‐person lectures and pre‐clinical simulations. Strategies had to be quickly developed to guarantee the safety of faculty and students, while also adhering to national guidelines to ensure that educational standards were met and students' graduations and entrance into residency programs were not delayed. This literature review assesses the novel strategies that dental schools created and implemented to teach in a distance‐learning platform and evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of these strategies. In addition, this review talks about the lessons learned during the pandemic and the incorporation of successful strategies after the pandemic ended. Methods This review evaluated the literature using PubMed and ScienceDirect with the following keywords: "teaching strategies," "dental education," and "COVID‐19." The search strategy yielded 15 articles that assessed relevant teaching strategies that were implemented during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Results The literature described the swift response of dental institutions in implementing teaching strategies in response to the inability of continuing in‐person teaching. An overwhelming majority of institutions moved their didactic lectures to online platforms. Several institutions implemented online simulations with virtual reality models, videos and discussion boards, standardized patient actors, and case‐based discussions. Conclusion Many of the teaching strategies that were implemented as a result of the COVID‐19 pandemic were highly effective. Dental schools were able to satisfy Commission on Dental Accreditation standards and meet students' requirements for graduation during the pandemic despite the rapid and unplanned shift away from in‐person instruction and simulation secondary to the COVID‐19 pandemic.

The teaching and assessment of local anaesthesia in UK dental schools

Abstract:Introduction: Local anaesthesia (LA) is fundamental to successful dental treatment. Graduating hygienists, therapist and dentists should be confident and proficient in delivering LA. There is one previously published article reviewing LA teaching in United Kingdom (UK) dental schools in 2016, and at this time 10 out of 14 schools allowed peer-to-peer administration. The method of teaching LA administration has become an area of debate in terms of legality and morality given the potential complications and issues with valid consent. The aim of the study was to explore current teaching practices and assessment of LA in UK dental schools. Materials and methods: Two national surveys (2020 and 2023) were sent out via the ABAOMS Education Committee to all 16 dental schools in the United Kingdom with dental and/or hygiene and therapy programmes. Results: There was a 100% response rate from all schools. There has been a significant shift from peer-to-peer administration of local anaesthesia, with only 4 schools now allowing peer-to-peer administration. The majority of schools use simulation methods to deliver the teaching, including LA models, cadavers and 'cap-on' simulation with a peer. When comparing the timing of teaching between 2020 and 2023, BDS students now administer their first LA injection to a patient later in the programme, and there has been a reduction in intra-professional teaching. Conclusion: Due to the large shift away from practicing LA on peers, there is a need for further development of simulation methods given the drawbacks with current models and the limited development of haptic technology in relation to LA.

Abstract:Aim The 1st European Workshop on Periodontal Education in 2009 made recommendations regarding the scope of periodontal education at undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG) and continuing professional development (CPD) levels, defining competencies and learning outcomes that were instrumental at the time in helping to define periodontal teaching curricula. The 19th European Workshop on Periodontology and 2nd European Consensus Workshop on Education in Periodontology (Education in Periodontology in Europe) was held in 2023 to identify changes and future developments in periodontal education (including those informed by the COVID‐19 pandemic) and embracing methods and formats of periodontal teaching and training. The aim of this review was to assess current knowledge regarding education methods in periodontology, including traditional face‐to‐face (F2F) teaching and the move to student‐centred methods, virtual learning methods and use of digital technology, as well as blended teaching and learning (including teaching delivery and assessment) at UG, PG and CPD levels. Materials and Methods Systematic searches were conducted to identify relevant studies from the literature. Data were extracted and descriptive summaries collated. Results The pandemic was a major disruptor of traditional F2F teaching but provided opportunities for rapid implementation of alternative and supplementary teaching methods. Although online learning has become an integral part of periodontal education, teachers and learners alike favour some form of F2F teaching. Blended teaching and learning are feasible in many areas of periodontal education, both for knowledge and skills acquisition as well as in assessment. Student‐centred methods and blended approaches such as the flipped classroom seem highly effective, and online/virtual classrooms with both synchronous and asynchronous lectures are highly valued. Learning with haptic methods and virtual reality (VR) enhances the educational experience, especially when VR is integrated with traditional methods. The quality of the teacher continues to be decisive for the best knowledge transfer in all its forms. Conclusions Live F2F teaching continues to be highly trusted; however, all types of student‐centred and interactive forms of knowledge transfer are embraced as enhancements. While digital methods offer innovation in education, blended approaches integrating both virtual and traditional methods appear optimal to maximize the achievement of learning outcomes. All areas of periodontal education (UG, PG and CPD) can benefit from such approaches; however, more research is needed to evaluate their benefits, both for knowledge transfer and skills development, as well as in assessment.

Learning strategies of dental students in Buenos Aires, Argentina prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Various theories have endeavored to explain how knowledge is accessed. Students, in order to learn, need a good repertoire of appropriate metacognitive and self-regulating strategies and knowledge, which they use consciously or unconsciously. Teachers, in addition to knowing how to teach, need to be aware of students' learning strategies, metacognition, and self-regulation, and of the impact of changes associated with recent pandemic scenarios. Aim: The aim of this study was to identify the study strategies preferred by dental students in two different scenarios: prior to and during the pandemic. Materials and method: The sample consisted of third-year dentistry students at Buenos Aires University (UBA) during 2019 (Group GP, 141 students, face-toface activity) and 2021 (Group GE, 60 students, e-learning during the pandemic). Participants were asked (a) to provide demographic information (sex and age) and (b) to answer the abridged ACRA scale. Statistical treatment included descriptive tests; Chi2, binomial exact and Student's t-test (p<0.05). Results: The proportion of students who participated with respect to total students enrolled was 58.50% in 2019 and 26.20% in 2021, with female gender being significantly higher. There were significant differences in total number of participants during the different periods (p=0.001), and in gender distribution during the pandemic (p=0.007). Comparison between groups GP and GE showed no significant difference regarding preferences expressed in total values for the scale or for the domains. Analysis of preferences according to gender showed significant differences in total group (p=0.007) and the domains CLCS (Cognitive and Learning Control Strategies) (p= 0.008) and LSS (Learning Support Strategies) (p=0.002). The mean values of preferences selected by females were higher. Similar results were found upon analyzing preferences during the pandemic (n= 60) considering total score (p= 0.033) and the domains CLCS (p= 0.035) and LSS (p= 0.007). Conclusions: The study identified trends towards an increase in the score and consequently greater use of techniques included in the domains related to metacognition, especially among women. There is potential neutralization of the impact created by the methodological shift between the two periods (face-to-face and e-learning) probably as a result of the implicit adaptability, latent in students, regarding digital methodology, which enables them to adapt to learning in challenging situations.
A Toolbox of Strategies to Improve Test-Taking Skills: A Comparison of Student Perceptions

Abstract:Changes in the national examination structures have renewed interest in the development of test-taking strategies for professional students in the health sciences. It is often assumed that these high-achieving students have developed proficient test-taking skills and abilities prior to admittance. However, the assessments in these programs and for national licensure require an elevated level of reasoning and integration with clinical concepts. It was hypothesized that the implementation of an immersive test-taking strategies program would improve dental student perceptions of their abilities. A "toolbox" of four methods was implemented which included: 1. An introductory video that provided students with ten tips for approaching high-level exam questions 2. Problem solution videos interspersed with class practice problems to walk students independently through rationales 3. Collaborative group assessments in which students implemented the strategies in teams to prepare for exams and 4. Unit exam debriefings to review the question rationales. While all methods were positively reviewed on surveys, students indicated that the problem solution videos and the collaborative group assessments were more helpful and improved their test-taking skills significantly more than the other strategies (P < 0.01, one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc test). Students felt they had developed strong test-taking strategies (average of 4.21 on a 5-point scale, SD 0.76) and felt more prepared for the Integrated National Board Dental Examination (4.48, SD 0.66). These results suggest that a multi-pronged approach with frequent opportunities to practice test-taking strategies can improve student perceptions of their ability to master high-level and integrated assessment questions.
Survey of student attitudes towards digital simulation technologies at a dental school in China

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Digital simulation technologies have become widespread in healthcare education, especially in dentistry; these technologies include digital X-ray images, digital microscopes, virtual pathology slides and other types of simulation. This study aimed to assess students' attitudes towards digital simulation technologies at a large, top-ranked dental school in China, as well as find out how students compare the digital technologies with traditional training methods.METHODS: In April 2015, a custom-designed questionnaire was distributed to a total of 389 students who had received digital technology and simulation-based training in West China Dental School during 2012-2014.RESULTS: Results of a cross-sectional survey show that most students accept digital simulation technology; they report that the technology is stimulating and facilitates self-directed and self-paced learning.CONCLUSION: These findings, together with the objective advantages of digital technology, suggest that digital simulation training offers significant potential for dental education, highlighting the need for further research and more widespread implementation.

Validity and reliability of a self-assessment scale for Dental and Oral Health student's perception of transferable skills in Australia

Abstract:Background: The Australian Dental Council's (ADC) competency framework requires graduating dental practitioners to be competent in a number of transferable skills, which includes: being scientifically versed, technically skilled and capable of safe independent work and teamwork, whilst adhering to high ethical standards (Australian Dental Council. Professional Competencies of the Newly Qualified Dentist. Melbourne, Australia: ADC; 2016). Part of the role of dental educators is to ensure graduating students acquire requisite transferable skills, in line with regulatory requirements (Chuenjitwongsa et al. Eur J Dent Educ. 2018;22:1). In order to achieve this, it is imperative to assess students' own understanding or perception of transferable skill requirement upon graduation. The objective of this study was to develop a valid and reliable scale for this assessment. Method: A cohort of students drawn across three different dental programmes: undergraduate dentistry (years 1-3); post-graduate dentistry (years 4-5); and Bachelor of Dental Technology/Prosthesis, participated in this study. A self-assessment questionnaire containing relevant open- and closed-ended questions was administered. The questionnaire assessed students' perception of transferable skills for their future career and attitude towards learning and developing transferable skills. Result: In total, we successfully assessed 388 of the 391 students sampled (99.2% response rate), their mean age was 24.3 years (SD ± 5.7), and 53.3% were females, whilst 46.7% were males. Overall, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) extracted five factors for students' perception of current skill level, and four factors for future skill requirements. The factor structures were confirmed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and the structure had a good model fit and high levels of reliability, with respect to individual dimension and content validity. Conclusions: The structure derived from the transferable skill survey administered to a cohort of dental students suggests that the transferable skill survey can be utilised as a valid and reliable screening tool to test students' perception of transferable skill requirements.
U.S. Dental students' and faculty members' attitudes about technology, instructional strategies, student diversity, and school duration: a comparative study

Abstract:In this study, attitudes and perceptions of U.S. dental students and faculty members were evaluated regarding four aspects of dental education: technology integration, instructional strategies, student diversity, and school duration. A survey instrument with eight statements using a five-point Likert scale and a free-text comment section was developed and distributed through Survey Monkey. A total of 426 students and 187 faculty members from ten U.S. dental schools participated, a response rate of 17 percent of those surveyed. Faculty and student responses were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test. The results of this analytic procedure revealed that the groups differed in their average responses for seven of the eight statements. Analysis of the faculty and student comments revealed similar themes between the two groups. Both dental students and dental faculty members stated that technology integration should be viewed as only a supplement to conventional instruction and showed mixed opinions about electronic textbooks. Further, both groups had positive views of the roles of problem-based learning, community service, and the integration of research practice into dental education. Both groups also valued diversity in the student body and supported the current four-year duration of dental school.

Abstract:In recent decades, a noticeable trend has emerged in medical and dental schools to adjust their curricula to promote learning strategies and habits geared towards long-term knowledge retention. This systematic review therefore sought to examine whether different teaching methods influence students' preferred learning approaches (deep, strategic, and surface approach) and indirectly affect their academic performance. Furthermore, it provides a comprehensive overview of the inconsistencies evident in previous literature regarding the relationship between learning approaches and academic performance of medical and dental students. A thorough search across eight databases yielded 49 relevant studies published between the years 2000 and 2023. The majority of studies revealed that whilst deep and strategic learners tend to excel at medical or dental school, surface learners appear to struggle under intense workload and pressure. Hence, a common consensus emerged amongst the existing literature that there is a relative benefit in attempting to guide students towards deep and strategic learning habits and to minimise surface-related learning strategies. However, results also conveyed that merely modifying the teaching methods used in medical and dental schools has limited merit. As such, the results emphasised the lack of a 'one-size-fits-all' teaching method. Common factors influencing learning approaches were subsequently identified, and based on these findings, an outlook was put forth to integrate a cognitive neuroscience approach into higher education. These directions for future investigations aim to help students reach their full potential by understanding the processes underlying efficient learning and by being mindful of respective encouraging and discouraging factors.

Abstract:Staphylococci were isolated from clinical specimens obtained from patients not known to be exposed to abnormal levels of heavy metals. The antibiotic and heavy metal resistance patterns of these strains were determined by using a disk diffusion test and computer sorting. Though not absolute, an association of resistance to mercury and tetracycline in coagulase-negative strains was found, in contrast to resistance to copper and penicillin in coagulase-producing strains. A high degree of correlation was observed between the resistance to phenyl mercury and inorganic mercury, but no correlation was obtained between resistance to methylmercury and other metals. In general, strains resistant to many agents were usually coagulase negative. A possible mechanism and implications of these associations are considered.
Undergraduate dental students’ perspective on the implementation of digital dentistry in the preclinical curriculum: a questionnaire survey

Abstract:Abstract Background Digitalisation is an expanding field in dentistry and implementation of digital teaching methods in dental education is an essential part of modern education. Therefore, two digital training modules were implemented in the preclinical curriculum at the Justus Liebig University Giessen. The aim of this study was to assess the students’ perspective on the implementation with a questionnaire survey. Methods Since the fall term 2017/18, students of the course of dental prosthodontics I attended the training module I, where they learned to use computer-aided learning (CAL) approaches for the digital analysis of tooth preparations. In training module II, students of the course of dental prosthodontics II learned how to manufacture a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing restoration. After the completion of the training modules, all students starting with the fall term 2017/18 to the spring term 2019 were asked to fill in a questionnaire regarding the aspects of handling, didactic benefit, motivation, and overall assessment. Results Students rated the implementation of digital aspects in teaching as positive in terms of handling, didactic benefit, and motivation, but gave preference to the assessment of the tooth preparations by dental instructors. In addition, students assessed the feedback from the faculty regarding tips and tricks better than the digital feedback. More than 90% of the students indicated that they could imagine using an intraoral scanner for treatment of patients in the dental office in future. Conclusions The results of the present study revealed a positive perspective of students on the implementation of digital dentistry in the preclinical curriculum. However, difficulties with CAL systems were reported and most students preferred evaluation of preparation by dental instructors. Thus, CAL approaches offer an additional teaching method besides the traditional teaching of manual skills.

Abstract:Background With the rapid development of technology, traditional dental education has undergone a transition with the active incorporation of digital technology into curricula. DCARER is a recently developed digital real-time evaluation system for the digital assessment of student preclinical simulation practice performance. The system provides supplementary feedback on process analysis in addition to an objective final result. This study evaluated the grading validity of the DCARER system and its effect on dental preclinical practice skills training. Methods Seventy-three residents of Grade 2018, all of whom had completed their 3-year term residencies in standardised and systematic training, were recruited into this study to examine the system's grading validity. All performed crown preparations with the adoption of the DCARER system, which generated both process and final scores. Three experts gave their own grade anonymously according to the final work. The differences between the digital system and the expert scores were analysed. In addition, 60 dental students in Grade 4 and 10 dental faculty members were randomly divided into traditional and digital groups. The students in the traditional group prepared the tooth with the guidance of supervisors, whilst the digital group used the DCARER system. After the class, the students' tooth preparations were scored by the same three experts in a blinded manner. The students and faculty members completed two different sets of questionnaires to evaluate the effects of teaching, acceptance, satisfaction, and evaluation accuracy of the digital system and the traditional method. Results The grading validity assessment showed no significant difference between the tooth preparation scores given by the DCARER system and the experts (P> .05). The unique process scores given by the DCARER system were weakly correlated with the final scores given by both the digital system and the experts. The main characteristics of the 60 students and 10 faculty members were homogeneous at baseline (P> .05). The tooth preparations of the traditional group scored significantly lower than those of the digital group (P < .01). More students in the digital group (93.3%) believed the judgement to be objective than in the traditional group (73.3%). All students guided by the DCARER system (100%) and 80% of students taught in a traditional manner felt that the assessment reinforced the learning process. Faculty members reported that use of the digital system did not significantly increase their workload and reinforced the learning process for the internship. Conclusion The results presented here indicate the validity of grading using the digital real-time evaluation system. Students and faculty could benefit from application of the system in tooth preparation practice, which may provide effective clinical interaction training for dental education.
Assessment Practices in Continuing Professional Development Activities in Health Professions: A Scoping Review

Abstract:Introduction: In continuing professional development (CPD), educators face the need to develop and implement innovative assessment strategies to adhere to accreditation standards and support lifelong learning. However, little is known about the development and validation of these assessment practices. We aimed to document the breadth and depth of what is known about the development and implementation of assessment practices within CPD activities. Methods: We conducted a scoping review using the framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley (2005) and updated in 2020. We examined five databases and identified 1733 abstracts. Two team members screened titles and abstracts for inclusion/exclusion. After data extraction, we conducted a descriptive analysis of quantitative data and a thematic analysis of qualitative data. Results: A total of 130 studies were retained for the full review. Most reported assessments are written assessments (n = 100), such as multiple-choice items (n = 79). In 99 studies, authors developed an assessment for research purpose rather than for the CPD activity itself. The assessment validation process was detailed in 105 articles. In most cases, the authors examined the content with experts (n = 57) or pilot-tested the assessment (n = 50). We identified three themes: 1-satisfaction with assessment choices; 2-difficulties experienced during the administration of the assessment; and 3-complexity of the validation process. Discussion: Building on the adage "assessment drives learning," it is imperative that the CPD practices contribute to the intended learning and limit the unintended negative consequences of assessment. Our results suggest that validation processes must be considered and adapted within CPD contexts.

Abstract:The value of the combination of gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO) and chemotherapy for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is currently analyzed within clinical trials. GO (6 mg/m2) and standard-dose cytarabine (100 mg/m2) is evaluated for the treatment of newly diagnosed AML in elderly patients in the SAL phase II trial. Preliminary results of the MRC AML15 trial support the application of GO 3 mg/m2 with standard- and high-dose cytarabine and anthracyclines for the treatment of de novo AML. Within this trial the addition of GO seems especially of value for favorable and intermediate cytogenetic risk groups. The combination of GO (3 mg/m2) and high-dose cytarabine (3 g/m2) is safe and more effective for the treatment of refractory AML than previous combinations from the AMLSG study group. First results prove the possibility of allogeneic stem cell transplantation after GO therapy. Initial data of a phase II trial document the safety and efficacy profile of GO within a reduced-intensity conditioning protocol applying fludarabine and total body irradiation.
