Abstract:Accurate segmentation of abdominal organs is a key step in developing a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system. Probabilistic atlas based on human anatomical structure, used as a priori information in a Bayes framework, has been widely used for organ segmentation. How to register the probabilistic atlas to the patient volume is the main challenge. Additionally, there is the disadvantage that the conventional probabilistic atlas may cause a bias toward the specific patient study because of the single reference. Taking these into consideration, a template matching framework based on an iterative probabilistic atlas for liver and spleen segmentation is presented in this paper. First, a bounding box based on human anatomical localization, which refers to the statistical geometric location of the organ, is detected for the candidate organ. Then, the probabilistic atlas is used as a template to find the organ in this bounding box by using template matching technology. We applied our method to 60 datasets including normal and pathological cases. For the liver, the Dice/Tanimoto volume overlaps were 0.930/0.870, the root-mean-squared error (RMSE) was 2.906mm. For the spleen, quantification led to 0.922 Dice/0.857 Tanimoto overlaps, 1.992mm RMSE. The algorithm is robust in segmenting normal and abnormal spleens and livers, such as the presence of tumors and large morphological changes. Comparing our method with conventional and recently developed atlas-based methods, our results show an improvement in the segmentation accuracy for multi-organs (p<0.00001).

Abstract:Accurate segmentation of cardiac tissues and organs based on cardiac computerized tomography angiography (CCTA) images has played an important role in biophysical modeling and medical diagnosis. The existing research on segmentation of cardiac tissues generally rely on limited public data, which may lead to unsatisfactory performance. In this paper, we first present a unique dataset of three-dimensional (3D) CCTA images collected from multiple centers to remedy this shortcoming. We further propose to efficiently create labels by solving the Laplace’s equation with given boundary conditions. The generated images and labels are confirmed by cardiologists. A deep learning algorithm, based on 3D-Unet model trained with a combined loss function, is proposed to simultaneously segment aorta, left ventricle, left atrium, left atrial appendage and myocardium from the CCTA images. Experimental evaluations show that the model trained with a proposed combined loss function can improve the segmentation accuracy and robustness. By efficiently producing a patient-specific geometry for simulation, we believe that this learning-based approach could provide an avenue to combine with biophysical modeling for the study of hemodynamics in cardiac tissues.

Abstract:Background: The proposed algorithm could support accurate localization of lung disease. To develop and validate an automated deep learning model combined with a post-processing algorithm to segment six pulmonary anatomical regions in chest computed tomography (CT) images acquired during positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scans. The pulmonary regions have five pulmonary lobes and airway trees.Methods: Patients who underwent both PET/CT imaging with an extra chest CT scan were retrospectively enrolled. The pulmonary segmentation of six regions in CT was performed via a convolutional neural network (CNN) of DenseVNet architecture with some post-processing algorithms. Three evaluation metrics were used to assess the performance of this method, which combined deep learning and the post-processing method. The agreement between the combined model and ground truth segmentations in the test set was analyzed.Results: A total of 640 cases were enrolled. The combined model, which involved deep learning and post-processing methods, had a higher performance than the single deep learning model. In the test set, the all-lobes overall Dice coefficient, Hausdorff distance, and Jaccard coefficient were 0.972, 12.025 mm, and 0.948, respectively. The airway-tree Dice coefficient, Hausdorff distance, and Jaccard coefficient were 0.849, 32.076 mm, and 0.815, respectively. A good agreement was observed between our segmentation in every plot.Conclusions: The proposed model combining two methods can automatically segment five pulmonary lobes and airway trees on chest CT imaging in PET/CT. The performance of the combined model was higher than the single deep learning model in each region in the test set.

Abstract:Automatic lung organ segmentation on CT images is crucial for lung disease diagnosis. However, the unlimited voxel values and class imbalance of lung organs can lead to false-negative/positive and leakage issues in advanced methods. Additionally, some slender lung organs are easily lost during the recycled down/up-sample procedure, e.g., bronchioles & arterioles, causing severe discontinuity issue. Inspired by these, this paper introduces an effective lung organ segmentation method called Fuzzy Attention-based Border Rendering (FABR) network. Since fuzzy logic can handle the uncertainty in feature extraction, hence the fusion of deep networks and fuzzy sets should be a viable solution for better performance. Meanwhile, unlike prior top-tier methods that operate on all regular dense points, our FABR depicts lung organ regions as cube-trees, focusing only on recycle-sampled border vulnerable points, rendering the severely discontinuous, false-negative/positive organ regions with a novel Global-Local Cube-tree Fusion (GLCF) module. All experimental results, on four challenging datasets of airway & artery, demonstrate that our method can achieve the favorable performance significantly.

Abstract:Deep learning methods have been widely and successfully applied to the medical imaging field. Specifically, fully convolutional neural networks have become the state-of-the-art supervised segmentation method in a variety of biomedical segmentation problems. Two fully convolutional networks were proposed to sequentially achieve accurate lobar segmentation. Firstly, a 2D ResNet-101 based network is proposed for lung segmentation and 575 chest CT scans from multicenter clinical trials were used with radiologist approved lung segmentation. Secondly, a 3D DenseNet based network is applied to segment the 5 lobes and a total of 1280 different CT scans were used with radiologist approved lobar segmentation as ground truth. The dataset includes various pathological lung diseases and stratified sampling was used to form training and test sets following a ratio of 4:1 to ensure a balanced number and type of abnormality present. A 3D CNN segmentation model was also built for lung segmentation to investigate the feasibility using current hardware. Using 5-fold cross validation a mean Dice coefficient of 0.988 +/- 0.012 and Average Surface Distance of 0.562 +/- 0.49 mm was achieved by the proposed 2D CNN on lung segmentation. 3D DenseNet on lobar segmentation achieved Dice score of 0.959 +/- 0.087 and Average surface distance of 0.873 +/- 0.61 mm.
URO-GAN: an Untrustworthy Region Optimization Approach for Adipose Tissue Segmentation Based on Adversarial Learning

Abstract:Automatic segmentation of adipose tissue from CT images is an essential module of medical assistant diagnosis. A large scale of abdominal cross-section CT images can be used to segment subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) with deep learning method. However, the CT images still need to be professionally and accurately annotated to improve the segmentation quality. The paper proposes a semi-supervised segmentation network based on adversarial learning. The model is called URO-GAN and consists of two paths used to segment SAT and VAT, respectively. An SAT-to-VAT transmission mechanism is set up between these two paths, where several inverse-SAT excitation blocks are set to help the SAT segmentation network guide the VAT segmentation network. An untrustworthy region optimization mechanism is proposed to improve the segmentation quality and keep the adversarial learning stable. With the confidence map output from the discriminator network, an optimizer network is used to fix the error in the masks predicted by the segmentation network. The URO-GAN achieves good results by training with 84 annotated images and 3969 unannotated images. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on the segmentation of adipose tissue in medical images.
Lung Parenchyma Segmentation Based on U-Net Fused With Shape Stream

Abstract:Accurate lung parenchyma segmentation is vital for computer-aided lung cancer diagnosis. Existing lung parenchyma segmentation networks excel at segmenting large and clear lung parenchyma regions, but struggle with small and blurry regions. This study proposes an improved network structure to improve the segmentation performance of small and blurry lung parenchyma regions while maintaining accuracy for large and clear lung parenchyma regions. The proposed network is an improved network based on U-Net. A shape stream branch and multi-scale convolutional blocks are introduced into the network. The proposed network takes computed tomography (CT) images as inputs and generates corresponding binary masks as outputs. In this study, the original CT images are derived from the Open Source Imaging Consortium (OSIC) Pulmonary Fibrosis Progression dataset. In the experimental results, the overall mean Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of the proposed network reaches 0.932907, which is 0.64% higher than that of the second-best network. The segment test results show that the proposed network has significantly better segmentation performance than other networks when the lung parenchyma is relatively small. On a patient-by-patient basis, the mean DSC of the proposed network is 0.63% higher than that of the second-best network. The proposed network improves the segmentation performance of small and blurry lung parenchyma while maintaining accuracy for large and clear lung parenchyma.

Abstract:Background : Many cardiovascular diseases are closely related to the composition of epicardial adipose tissue (EAT). Accurate segmentation of EAT can provide a reliable reference for doctors to diagnose the disease. The distribution and composition of EAT often have significant individual differences, and the traditional segmentation methods are not effective. In recent years, deep learning method has been gradually introduced into EAT segmentation task. Purpose : The existing EAT segmentation methods based on deep learning have a large amount of computation and the segmentation accuracy needs to be improved. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to develop a lightweight EAT segmentation network, which can obtain higher segmentation accuracy with less computation and further alleviate the problem of false positive segmentation. Methods : Firstly, the obtained Computed Tomography (CT) was preprocessed. That is, the threshold range of EAT was determined to be (‐190, ‐30) HU according to prior knowledge, and the non‐adipose pixels were excluded by threshold segmentation to reduce the difficulty of training. Secondly, the image obtained after thresholding was input into the lightweight RDU‐Net network to perform the training, validating, and testing process. RDU‐Net uses a residual multi‐scale dilated convolution block in order to extract a wider range of information without changing the current resolution. At the same time, the form of residual connection is adopted to avoid the problem of gradient expansion or gradient explosion caused by too deep network, which also makes the learning easier. In order to optimize the training process, this paper proposes PNDiceLoss, which takes both positive and negative pixels as learning targets, fully considers the class imbalance problem and appropriately highlights the status of positive pixels. Results : In this paper, 50 CCTA images were randomly selected from the hospital, and the commonly used Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), Jaccard similarity (JS), Accuracy (ACC), Specificity (SP), Precision (PC), and Pearson correlation coefficient are used as evaluation metrics. Bland‐Altman analysis results show that the extracted EAT volume is consistent with the actual volume. Compared with the existing methods, the segmentation results show that the proposed method achieves better performance on these metrics, achieving the DSC of 0.9262. The number of false positive pixels has been reduced by more than half. Pearson correlation coefficient reached 0.992, and linear regression coefficient reached 0.977 when measuring the volume of EAT obtained. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, experiments are carried out in the cardiac fat database of VisualLab. On this database, the proposed method also achieved good results, and the DSC value reached 0.927 in the case of only 878 slices. Conclusions : A new method to segment and quantify EAT is proposed. Comprehensive experiments show that compared with some classical segmentation algorithms, the proposed method has the advantages of shorter time‐consuming, less memory required for operations, and higher segmentation accuracy. Abstract:Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is a visceral fat deposit, that's known for its association with factors, such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, age, and hypertension. Segmentation of the EAT in a fast and reproducible way is important for the interpretation of its role as an independent risk marker intricate. However, EAT has a variable distribution, and various diseases may affect the volume of the EAT, which can increase the complexity of the already time-consuming manual segmentation work. We propose a 3D deep attention U-Net method to automatically segment the EAT from coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). Five-fold cross-validation and hold-out experiments were used to evaluate the proposed method through a retrospective investigation of 200 patients. The automatically segmented EAT volume was compared with physician-approved clinical contours. Quantitative metrics used were the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), sensitivity, specificity, Jaccard index (JAC), Hausdorff distance (HD), mean surface distance (MSD), residual mean square distance (RMSD), and the center of mass distance (CMD). For cross-validation, the median DSC, sensitivity, and specificity were 92.7%, 91.1%, and 95.1%, respectively, with JAC, HD, CMD, MSD, and RMSD are 82.9% ± 8.8%, 3.77 ± 1.86mm, 1.98 ± 1.50mm, 0.37 ± 0.24mm, and 0.65 ± 0.37mm, respectively. For the hold-out test, the accuracy of the proposed method remained high. We developed a novel deep learning-based approach for the automated segmentation of the EAT on CCTA images. We demonstrated the high accuracy of the proposed learning-based segmentation method through comparison with ground truth contour of 200 clinical patient cases using 8 quantitative metrics, Pearson correlation, and Bland-Altman analysis. Our automatic EAT segmentation results show the potential of the proposed method to be used in computer-aided diagnosis of coronary artery diseases (CADs) in clinical settings.

Abstract:Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a kind of adipose tissue engaging in thermoregulatory thermogenesis, metaboloregulatory thermogenesis, and secretory. Current studies have revealed that BAT activity is negatively correlated with adult body weight and is considered a target tissue for the treatment of obesity and other metabolic-related diseases. Additionally, the activity of BAT presents certain differences between different ages and genders. Clinically, BAT segmentation based on PET/CT data is a reliable method for brown fat research. However, most of the current BAT segmentation methods rely on the experience of doctors. In this paper, an improved U-net network, ICA-Unet, is proposed to achieve automatic and precise segmentation of BAT. First, the traditional 2D convolution layer in the encoder is replaced with a depth-wise over-parameterized convolutional (Do-Conv) layer. Second, the channel attention block is introduced between the double-layer convolution. Finally, the image information entropy (IIE) block is added in the skip connections to strengthen the edge features. Furthermore, the performance of this method is evaluated on the dataset of PET/CT images from 368 patients. The results demonstrate a strong agreement between the automatic segmentation of BAT and manual annotation by experts. The average DICE coefficient (DSC) is 0.9057, and the average Hausdorff distance is 7.2810. Experimental results suggest that the method proposed in this paper can achieve efficient and accurate automatic BAT segmentation and satisfy the clinical requirements of BAT.
A deep learning model based on the attention mechanism for automatic segmentation of abdominal muscle and fat for body composition assessment

Abstract:Background: Quantitative muscle and fat data obtained through body composition analysis are expected to be a new stable biomarker for the early and accurate prediction of treatment-related toxicity, treatment response, and prognosis in patients with lung cancer. The use of these biomarkers can enable the adjustment of individualized treatment regimens in a timely manner, which is critical to further improving patient prognosis and quality of life. We aimed to develop a deep learning model based on attention for fully automated segmentation of the abdomen from computed tomography (CT) to quantify body composition. Methods: A fully automatic segmentation deep learning model was designed based on the attention mechanism and using U-Net as the framework. Subcutaneous fat, skeletal muscle, and visceral fat were manually segmented by two experts to serve as ground truth labels. The performance of the model was evaluated using Dice similarity coefficients (DSCs) and Hausdorff distance at 95th percentile (HD95). Results: The mean DSC for subcutaneous fat and skeletal muscle were high for both the enhanced CT test set (0.93±0.06 and 0.96±0.02, respectively) and the plain CT test set (0.90±0.09 and 0.95±0.01, respectively). Nevertheless, the model did not perform well in the segmentation performance of visceral fat, especially for the enhanced CT test set. The mean DSC for the enhanced CT test set was 0.87±0.11, while the mean DSC for the plain CT test set was 0.92±0.03. We discuss the reasons for this result. Conclusions: This work demonstrates a method for the automatic outlining of subcutaneous fat, skeletal muscle, and visceral fat areas at L3.
Multiscale lung nodule segmentation based on 3D coordinate attention and edge enhancement

Abstract:An important prerequisite for improving the reliability of lung cancer surveillance and clinical interventions is accurate lung nodule segmentation. Although deep learning is effective at performing medical image segmentation, lung CT image heterogeneity, nodule size, shape, and location variations, convolutional localized feature extraction characteristics, the receptive field limitations of continuous downsampling, lesion edge information losses, fuzzy boundary segmentation challenges, and the low segmentation accuracy achieved when segmenting lung CT images using deep learning remain. An edge-enhanced multiscale Sobel coordinate attention-atrous spatial convolutional pooling pyramid V-Net (SCA-VNet) algorithm for lung nodule segmentation was proposed to solve these problems. First, a residual edge enhancement module was designed, which was used to enhance the edges of the original data. Using an edge detection operator in combination with a residual module, this module could reduce data redundancy and alleviate the gray level similarity between the foreground and background. Then, a 3D atrous spatial convolutional pooling pyramid module set different expansion rates, which could obtain feature maps under different receptive fields and capture the multiscale information of the segmentation target. Finally, a three-dimensional coordinate attention network (3D CA-Net) module was added to the encoding and decoding paths to extract channel weights from multiple dimensions. This step propagated the spatial information in the coding layer to the subsequent layers, and it could reduce the loss of information during the forward propagation process. The proposed method achieved a Dice coefficient of 87.50% on the lung image database consortium and image database resource initiative (LIDC-IDRI). It significantly outperformed the existing lung nodule segmentation models (UGS-Net, REMU-Net, and multitask models) and compared favorably with the Med3D, CENet, and PCAM_Net segmentation models in terms of their Dice coefficients, which were 3.37%, 2.2%, and 1.43%, respectively. The experimental results showed that the proposed SCA-VNet model attained improved lung nodule segmentation accuracy and laid a good foundation for improving the early detection rate of lung cancer.

Abstract:Rib segmentation based on chest X-ray images is essential in the computer-aided diagnosis systems of lung cancer, which serves as an important step in the quantitative analysis of various types of lung diseases. However, the traditional methods are unable to segment ribs effectively due to the unclear edges and overlapping regions in X-ray images. A novel rib segmentation framework based on Unpaired Sample Augmentation and Multi-Scale Network is presented in this paper, aiming to improve the accuracy of ribs segmentation with limited labeled samples. First, the algorithm learns pneumonia-related texture changes via unpaired chest x-ray images and generates various augmented samples. Then, a multi-scale network attempts to learn hierarchical features using global supervision. Finally, the refined segmentation result of each organ is achieved by using a deep separation module and a comprehensive loss function. Specifically, the hierarchical features can greatly improve the robustness of multi-organ segmentation networks. The complex multi-organ segmentation task with limited labeled data is simplified with the designed deep separation module. We justify the proposed framework through extensive experiments. It achieves good performance with DSC, Precision, Recall, and Jaccard of 88.03, 88.25, 88.36, and 79.02%, respectively. The DSC value increases nearly by 3% compared to other popular methods. The experimental results show that our algorithm presents better segmentation performance for the overlapping region and fuzzy region of multiple organs, which holds research value and prospects for application.

Abstract:Objectives Anterior mediastinal disease is a common disease in the chest. Computed tomography (CT), as an important imaging technology, is widely used in the diagnosis of mediastinal diseases. Doctors find it difficult to distinguish lesions in CT images because of image artifact, intensity inhomogeneity, and their similarity with other tissues. Direct segmentation of lesions can provide doctors a method to better subtract the features of the lesions, thereby improving the accuracy of diagnosis. Method As the trend of image processing technology, deep learning is more accurate in image segmentation than traditional methods. We employ a two-stage 3D ResUNet network combined with lung segmentation to segment CT images. Given that the mediastinum is between the two lungs, the original image is clipped through the lung mask to remove some noises that may affect the segmentation of the lesion. To capture the feature of the lesions, we design a two-stage network structure. In the first stage, the features of the lesion are learned from the low-resolution downsampled image, and the segmentation results under a rough scale are obtained. The results are concatenated with the original image and encoded into the second stage to capture more accurate segmentation information from the image. In addition, attention gates are introduced in the upsampling of the network, and these gates can focus on the lesion and play a role in filtering the features. The proposed method has achieved good results in the segmentation of the anterior mediastinal. Results The proposed method was verified on 230 patients, and the anterior mediastinal lesions were well segmented. The average Dice coefficient reached 87.73%. Compared with the model without lung segmentation, the model with lung segmentation greatly improved the accuracy of lesion segmentation by approximately 9%. The addition of attention gates slightly improved the segmentation accuracy. Conclusion The proposed automatic segmentation method has achieved good results in clinical data. In clinical application, automatic segmentation of lesions can assist doctors in the diagnosis of diseases and may facilitate the automated diagnosis of illnesses in the future.
Automated segmentation of 3-D body composition on computed tomography

Abstract:Purpose: To develop and validate a computer tool for automatic and simultaneous segmentation of body composition depicted on computed tomography (CT) scans for the following tissues: visceral adipose (VAT), subcutaneous adipose (SAT), intermuscular adipose (IMAT), skeletal muscle (SM), and bone. Approach: A cohort of 100 CT scans acquired from The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA) was used - 50 whole-body positron emission tomography (PET)-CTs, 25 chest, and 25 abdominal. Five different body compositions were manually annotated (VAT, SAT, IMAT, SM, and bone). A training-while-annotating strategy was used for efficiency. The UNet model was trained using the already annotated cases. Then, this model was used to enable semi-automatic annotation for the remaining cases. The 10-fold cross-validation method was used to develop and validate the performance of several convolutional neural networks (CNNs), including UNet, Recurrent Residual UNet (R2Unet), and UNet++. A 3-D patch sampling operation was used when training the CNN models. The separately trained CNN models were tested to see if they could achieve a better performance than segmenting them jointly. Paired-samples t-test was used to test for statistical significance. Results: Among the three CNN models, UNet demonstrated the best overall performance in jointly segmenting the five body compositions with a Dice coefficient of 0.840+/-0.091, 0.908+/-0.067, 0.603+/-0.084, 0.889+/-0.027, and 0.884+/-0.031, and a Jaccard index of 0.734+/-0.119, 0.837+/-0.096, 0.437+/-0.082, 0.800+/-0.042, 0.793+/-0.049, respectively for VAT, SAT, IMAT, SM, and bone. Conclusion: There were no significant differences among the CNN models in segmenting body composition, but jointly segmenting body compositions achieved a better performance than segmenting them separately.

Fully Convolutional Networks for Automated Segmentation of Abdominal Adipose Tissue Depots in Multicenter Water-Fat MRI

Abstract:Purpose: An approach for the automated segmentation of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) in multicenter water-fat MRI scans of the abdomen was investigated, using two different neural network architectures. Methods: The two fully convolutional network architectures U-Net and V-Net were trained, evaluated and compared on the water-fat MRI data. Data of the study Tellus with 90 scans from a single center was used for a 10-fold cross-validation in which the most successful configuration for both networks was determined. These configurations were then tested on 20 scans of the multicenter study beta-cell function in JUvenile Diabetes and Obesity (BetaJudo), which involved a different study population and scanning device. Results: The U-Net outperformed the used implementation of the V-Net in both cross-validation and testing. In cross-validation, the U-Net reached average dice scores of 0.988 (VAT) and 0.992 (SAT). The average of the absolute quantification errors amount to 0.67% (VAT) and 0.39% (SAT). On the multi-center test data, the U-Net performs only slightly worse, with average dice scores of 0.970 (VAT) and 0.987 (SAT) and quantification errors of 2.80% (VAT) and 1.65% (SAT). Conclusion: The segmentations generated by the U-Net allow for reliable quantification and could therefore be viable for high-quality automated measurements of VAT and SAT in large-scale studies with minimal need for human intervention. The high performance on the multicenter test data furthermore shows the robustness of this approach for data of different patient demographics and imaging centers, as long as a consistent imaging protocol is used.

Abstract:Lung segmentation on thoracic CT images plays an important role in early detection, diagnosis and 3D visualization of lung cancer. The segmentation accuracy, stability, and efficiency of serial CT scans have a significant impact on the performance of computer-aided detection. This paper proposes a global optimal hybrid geometric active contour model for automated lung segmentation on CT images. Firstly, the combination of global region and edge information leads to high segmentation accuracy in lung regions with weak boundaries or narrow bands. Secondly, due to the global optimality of energy functional, the proposed model is robust to the initial position of level set function and requires fewer iterations. Thus, the stability and efficiency of lung segmentation on serial CT slices can be greatly improved by taking advantage of the information between adjacent slices. In addition, to achieve the whole process of automated segmentation for lung cancer, two assistant algorithms based on prior shape and anatomical knowledge are proposed. The algorithms not only automatically separate the left and right lungs, but also include juxta-pleural tumors into the segmentation result. The proposed method was quantitatively validated on subjects from the publicly available LIDC-IDRI and our own data sets. Exhaustive experimental results demonstrate the superiority and competency of our method, especially compared with the typical edge-based geometric active contour model.

Abstract:Objective: The impact of body composition on disease prognosis is increasingly recognized. Analysis of computed tomography (CT) scans at the level of the third lumbar (L3) spine is considered a standard approach to measure muscle and adipose tissue body composition parameters. However, existing approaches need manually select the L3 vertebra and then analyze body composition, which is time-consuming. Thus, how to automatically analyze body composition becomes the problem.Methods: In this paper, a novel two-step method is proposed and can automatically localize the L3 vertebra and segment body tissue accurately. Initially, the lumbar spine region is coarsely detected, and then each lumbar vertebra is determined. Secondly, the slice at the L3 vertebra is selected to quantize tissue (muscle, subcutaneous adipose tissue, visceral adipose tissue, etc.) based on a segmentation network. To achieve high performance, a Cross-Stage Attention (CSA) block and an adversarial structure are jointly utilized in tissue segmentation.Results: The experimental results show that the L3 vertebra localization result achieves 95.08% Dice. The CSA block and adversarial structure play positive roles in improving the tissue segmentation performance with an average Dice from 95.15% to 97.44%.Conclusion: The results demonstrate that our method outperforms other existing body tissue segmentation approaches in terms of sensitivity, positive predictive value (PPV), Dice score, and Jaccard score.Significance: The time cost of data collection and annotation can be significantly reduced due to integrating L3 vertebra localization before tissue segmentation. Simultaneously, our method can be extended to all lumbar vertebrae and quantize each tissue volume in the abdomen.

Abstract:Segmentation of the lung parenchymal region in chest CT is an essential part of the automatic diagnosis of lung diseases. Therefore, the quality of the segmentation directly affects the results of the automatic diagnosis. This paper proposes a model for lung parenchymal segmentation in chest CT based on ResUnet. It introduces the residual learning unit to transfer low-level information and enhances the connection between layers using skip connections based on the U-Net architecture. Then, it achieves full feature extraction through down-convolution and up-sampling and uses image enhancement and data augmentation to preprocess the data set. Through experiment, the proposed segmentation model has better results than the IoU and Dice of other models and can better segment the lung parenchyma in chest CT.
