Abstract:This paper presents a novel passive shimming method for the effective correction of static magnetic field (B0) inhomogeneities in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems. Passive shimming is used to find an optimum configuration for the placement of iron pieces applied to improve the B0 uniformity in the predefined imaging region referred to as the diameter of spherical volume (DSV). However, most passive shimming methods neglect to recognize that the space under the patient bed is not in use for imaging. In this work, we present a new algorithm that attempts to avoid the unnecessary shimming of the space under the patient bed. During implementation, the B0 field is still measured over the DSV surface and then mapped onto the effective imaging volume surface; a dedicated sensitivity matrix is generated only for the imaging area above the patient bed. A linear programming optimization procedure is performed for the determination of thicknesses and locations the shim pieces. Our experimental results showed that by revising the shimming target area, the new method provides superior optimization solutions. Compared to a conventional approach, the new method requires smaller amount of iron to correct the B0 inhomogeneities in the imaging area which has the effect of improving thermal stability to the B0 field. It also reduces the complexity of the optimization problem. Our new shimming strategy helps to improve the magnetic field homogeneity within the realistic imaging space, and ultimately improve image quality.

Abstract:In a magnetic resonance imaging system, the magnetic field homogeneity of the imaging area plays a decisive role on the image quality. The passive shimming technique uses ferromagnetic material to eliminate the field impurity in the imaging area. In existing passive shimming algorithms, the target magnetic field (TMF) was usually set as a fixed value, such as the DC component of the magnetic field, leading to a rigid constraint to the formed optimization model, and it may cause shimming inefficiency or even failure. In this paper, an optimal target magnetic field (OTMF) method was proposed, which set the TMF as an optimization variable built in a linear programming model. In the established optimization problem, no extra computational burden was involved. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the bare magnetic field of a 3.0-T superconducting magnet was shimmed. Compared with conventional linear programming methods, the proposed scheme could provide better shimming solution with higher field homogeneity and less consumption of ferromagnetic material.
A Hybrid Field-Harmonics Approach for Passive Shimming Design in Mri

Abstract:This paper presents a new passive shimming (PS) design scheme for the correction of static magnetic-field inhomogeneities in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems. In MRI, the PS procedure usually employs magnetic-field-based or harmonic-based methods to find an optimal iron-piece configuration to improve the uniformity of the static magnetic field in the imaging region. For the field-based PS technique, the peak-to-peak field inhomogeneity is minimized, and the harmonic components are inherently unconstrained; in the harmonic-based scheme, selected unwanted harmonics are minimized, and the overall field uniformity is consequently reduced. The field approach usually provides good field homogeneity but lacks flexibility in managing all terms of spherical harmonic field expansion; the harmonic approach is capable of controlling targeted low-order harmonic terms but can have difficulty in producing optimal overall field homogeneity and in controlling high-order harmonics. The new algorithm proposed herein attempts to combine the strengths of these two methods for a better PS solution. During the PS implementation, an explicit expression of the system matrix with both the field and harmonic sensitivities is generated, and then, an optimization procedure is performed for the determination of shim-piece thicknesses and locations. A case study presented shows that the hybrid method provides good quality, flexible solutions for controlling individual harmonic impurities, and also overall field uniformity. This method is not only applicable to conventional MRI magnets, but also, its flexibility means that it can be easily used to shim unconventional electromagnets.
Passive Shimming of A Superconducting Magnet Using the L-1-Norm Regularized Least Square Algorithm

Abstract:The uniformity of the static magnetic field B0 is of prime importance for an MRI system. The passive shimming technique is usually applied to improve the uniformity of the static field by optimizing the layout of a series of steel shims. The steel pieces are fixed in the drawers in the inner bore of the superconducting magnet, and produce a magnetizing field in the imaging region to compensate for the inhomogeneity of the B0 field. In practice, the total mass of steel used for shimming should be minimized, in addition to the field uniformity requirement. This is because the presence of steel shims may introduce a thermal stability problem. The passive shimming procedure is typically realized using the linear programming (LP) method. The LP approach however, is generally slow and also has difficulty balancing the field quality and the total amount of steel for shimming. In this paper, we have developed a new algorithm that is better able to balance the dual constraints of field uniformity and the total mass of the shims. The least square method is used to minimize the magnetic field inhomogeneity over the imaging surface with the total mass of steel being controlled by an L1-norm based constraint. The proposed algorithm has been tested with practical field data, and the results show that, with similar computational cost and mass of shim material, the new algorithm achieves superior field uniformity (43% better for the test case) compared with the conventional linear programming approach.

Abstract:Magnetic resonance imaging is an inherently signal-to-noise-starved technique that limits the spatial resolution, diagnostic image quality and results in typically long acquisition times that are prone to motion artefacts. This limitation is exacerbated when receive coils have poor fit due to lack of flexibility or need for padding for patient comfort. Here, we report a new approach that uses printing for fabricating receive coils. Our approach enables highly flexible, extremely lightweight conforming devices. We show that these devices exhibit similar to higher signal-to-noise ratio than conventional ones, in clinical scenarios when coils could be displaced more than 18 mm away from the body. In addition, we provide detailed material properties and components performance analysis. Prototype arrays are incorporated within infant blankets for in vivo studies. This work presents the first fully functional, printed coils for 1.5- and 3-T clinical scanners.

Abstract:Low-field (B 0 < 0.2 T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is emerging as a low cost, point-of-care alternative to provide access to diagnostic imaging technology even in resource scarce environments. MRI magnets can be constructed based on permanent neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets in discretized arrangements, leading to substantially lower mass and costs. A challenge with these designs is, however, a good B 0 field homogeneity, which is needed to produce high quality images free of distortions. In this work, we describe an iterative approach to build a low-field MR magnet based on a B 0 -shimming methodology using genetic algorithms. The methodology is tested by constructing a small bore (inner bore diameter = 130 mm) desktop MR magnet (<15 kg) at a field strength of B 0 = 0.1 T and a target volume of 4 cm in diameter. The configuration consists of a base magnet and shim inserts, which can be placed iteratively without modifying the base magnet assembly and without changing the inner dimensions of the bore or the outer dimensions of the MR magnet. Applying the shims, B 0 field inhomogeneity could be reduced by a factor 8 from 5,448 to 682 ppm in the target central slice of the magnet. Further improvements of these results can be achieved in a second or third iteration, using more sensitive magnetic field probes (e.g., nuclear magnetic resonance based magnetic field measurements). The presented methodology is scalable to bigger magnet designs. The MR magnet can be reproduced with off-the-shelf components and a 3D printer and no special tools are needed for construction. All design files and code to reproduce the results will be made available as open source hardware.

Abstract:Passive shimming is widely used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems due to its excellent efficacy and cost-effectiveness. However, conventional shim tray structures have difficulty in effectively adjusting magnetic field distributions under specific conditions. This limitation can lead to insufficient cancellation of harmonics and result in significant residual forces on the trays, impeding accurate placement of the trays. In this study, instead of using the conventional design of the shim tray slot, we propose a dedicated passive shimming tray tailored for 3T cryogen-free animal MRI superconducting magnets. Passive shimming experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of this novel design, in which we were able to improve the peak-to-peak magnetic field homogeneity within the 180 mm diameter imaging region, reducing peak-to-peak (p-p) variation from 349.35 ppm to 19.08 ppm. Furthermore, the p-p homogeneity of the magnetic field measured at the imaging area with a diameter of spherical volume (DSV) of 160 mm reached 8.67 ppm. In addition, we strictly controlled the residual magnetic force of the shim tray to ensure its accurate placement. The experimental results indicate that the proposed structural optimization method and the residual magnetic force control strategy show potential in high-field MRI instruments requiring high homogeneity and handling of high residual magnetic force.

Abstract:This paper proposes a numerical method with an inverse boundary element method (IBEM) to design a set of shim coils for an open bipanar superconducting magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. For the traditional cylindrical MRI system, claustrophobics will suffer the palpitations and anxiety attacks when they are enclosed in a small area during the scanning process. However, such bipanar structure provides an open room temperature bore, thus improving patients' comfort. Based on the IBEM, the shim coil skeleton needs to be divided into some small flat triangular elements. By formulating the magnetization distribution by discrete current density, an objective function is constructed to evaluate the minimum error between axial magnetic field and desired magnetic field. In particular, the selfinduction is added into the objective function which is used to adjust the deviation from the ideal target field. Finally, the well-known stream function method is commonly used to map the current density into wires. The algorithm details have been exemplified through biplanar shim coil design examples in this paper. This method can be used for coils on arbitrary surface shapes.

Abstract:A method to create a highly homogeneous magnetic field by applying topology optimized, additively manufactured passive shimming elements is investigated. The topology optimization algorithm can calculate a suitable permanent and nonlinear soft magnetic design that fulfills the desired field properties. The permanent magnetic particles are bonded in a polyamide matrix and they are manufactured with a low-cost, end-user 3D printer. Stray field measurements and an inverse stray field simulation framework can determine printing and magnetization errors. The customized shimming elements are manufactured by a selective melting process which produces completely dense soft magnetic metal parts. The methodology is demonstrated on a simple example of two axial symmetric cylindrical magnets, which generates a high inhomogeneous magnetic field. In this case, the maximum magnetic field density is 25 mT and the the homogeneity can be increased by a factor of 35 or down to 6‰. Simulation and measurement results point out a good conformity. Additional topology optimizations of more than one shimming element layer show the opportunity to make the manufactured magnetic system even more homogeneous.

Adaptive Radiofrequency Shimming in MRI using Reconfigurable Dielectric Materials

Abstract:Inhomogeneity of the transmitted radiofrequency field B1+ is a major factor hindering the image quality in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at high field strengths. Here, a novel approach is presented, to locally modulate the B1+ utilizing an array of high permittivity materials with switchable connections. A 3$\times$3 array of barium titanate suspension elements was constructed, with two PIN diode-based switchable connectors per element. Electromagnetic simulations were performed to determine configurations that produce strong B1+ modulation. Remote B1+ field switching was tested in a disk- and and a torso-shaped phantom at 3T by applying different bias voltages to the PIN diodes. The attained B1+ modulation was assessed at various switching pattern positions and various depths within the phantoms. The configuration with the strongest effect size has produced up to 11% modulation in simulations at 15 mm depth, with excellent translation properties. The effects were successfully replicated in phantoms, with a 5 V bias voltage producing up to 11.6$\pm$0.2% modulation. At the relative depth of the human heart, up to 6% of modulation was observed in the torso phantom. The presented method may provide a promising direction for cost-effective, and adaptive B1+ shimming without changes to the scanner hardware.

3D Print of Polymer Bonded Rare-Earth Magnets, and 3D Magnetic Field Scanning With an End-User 3D Printer

Abstract:3D print is a recently developed technique, for single-unit production, and for structures that have been impossible to build previously. The current work presents a method to 3D print polymer bonded isotropic hard magnets with a low-cost, end-user 3D printer. Commercially available isotropic NdFeB powder inside a PA11 matrix is characterized, and prepared for the printing process. An example of a printed magnet with a complex shape that was designed to generate a specific stray field is presented, and compared with finite element simulation solving the macroscopic Maxwell equations. For magnetic characterization, and comparing 3D printed structures with injection molded parts, hysteresis measurements are performed. To measure the stray field outside the magnet, the printer is upgraded to a 3D magnetic flux density measurement system. To skip an elaborate adjusting of the sensor, a simulation is used to calibrate the angles, sensitivity, and the offset of the sensor. With this setup a measurement resolution of 0.05\,mm along the z-axes is achievable. The effectiveness of our novel calibration method is shown. With our setup we are able to print polymer bonded magnetic systems with the freedom of having a specific complex shape with locally tailored magnetic properties. The 3D scanning setup is easy to mount, and with our calibration method we are able to get accurate measuring results of the stray field.

Abstract:Background Magnetic field shimming of the magnet is a routine practice in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. For clinically‐used 1.5 T or 3 T MRI superconducting magnets, it is generally straightforward to achieve desired magnetic field uniformity with the passive shim technique. In comparison, superconducting shims with higher shimming efficiency are usually introduced in combination with passive shimming to satisfy the higher magnetic field uniformity requirement for ultrahigh field magnets (≥7 Tesla). However, superconducting shim usually involves a complex winding structure and low‐temperature environment, bringing considerable engineering challenges and extra costs in practice. Purpose In this study, we aimed to improve the passive shimming method that can incorporate the unique electromagnetic properties of ultrahigh‐field MRI magnets and is thus more effective for field corrections at 7T and above. Methods In this work, we propose a dedicated passive shimming strategy for a 7 T whole‐body MRI superconducting magnet. In this method, the iron usage and magnetic force due to the iron‐field interaction are strictly managed to ensure a shim tray insert is operable by manpower (without specially designed tools). Results To validate the proposed shimming strategy, a shimming experiment was implemented on a 7 T/800 mm superconducting magnet. Alternating with the odd and even shim trays in our two‐round operation, the magnetic field inhomogeneity was successfully corrected from 85.36 to 7.91 ppm, achieving the magnetic field quality elevation of more than one order of magnitude. Conclusion The experimental results indicated that the proposed electromagnetic technology is expected to be effective for developing ultrahigh‐field MRI instruments.

Abstract:In an ultralow-field magnetic resonance imaging (ULF-MRI) system, the uniformity of static magnetic field is essential for maintaining good imaging quality. However, achieving high homogeneity is difficult due to the low magnitude. This article proposes a flexible active shimming approach for ULF optimization, where an original geometry-based method is presented for first- and second-order shim coil designs. Different types of shim coils are approximated by combinatorial geometric curves, where no additional wire is needed for overall connection. An optimization problem is established to ensure that each shim coil generates a high-purity harmonic magnetic field, which is comparable to the optimization results obtained using the conventional stream function method. A computer-controlled multichannel current source is designed to drive the second-order shim coils, where the current output reaches an accuracy of 1 mA. The performance of optimized coils is verified by imaging experiments. It is demonstrated that homogeneity is improved from 157 to 111 ppm following the implementation of second-order shimming. The in vivo experiment shows that imaging quality is improved after shimming with the local signal-to-noise ratio increasing 1.16–1.92 folds.

Printing ferromagnetic domains for untethered fast-transforming soft materials

Abstract:Soft materials capable of transforming between three-dimensional (3D) shapes in response to stimuli such as light, heat, solvent, electric and magnetic fields have applications in diverse areas such as flexible electronics1,2, soft robotics3,4 and biomedicine5–7. In particular, magnetic fields offer a safe and effective manipulation method for biomedical applications, which typically require remote actuation in enclosed and confined spaces8–10. With advances in magnetic field control11, magnetically responsive soft materials have also evolved from embedding discrete magnets12 or incorporating magnetic particles13 into soft compounds to generating nonuniform magnetization profiles in polymeric sheets14,15. Here we report 3D printing of programmed ferromagnetic domains in soft materials that enable fast transformations between complex 3D shapes via magnetic actuation. Our approach is based on direct ink writing16 of an elastomer composite containing ferromagnetic microparticles. By applying a magnetic field to the dispensing nozzle while printing17, we reorient particles along the applied field to impart patterned magnetic polarity to printed filaments. This method allows us to program ferromagnetic domains in complex 3D-printed soft materials, enabling a set of previously inaccessible modes of transformation, such as remotely controlled auxetic behaviours of mechanical metamaterials with negative Poisson’s ratios. The actuation speed and power density of our printed soft materials with programmed ferromagnetic domains are orders of magnitude greater than existing 3D-printed active materials. We further demonstrate diverse functions derived from complex shape changes, including reconfigurable soft electronics, a mechanical metamaterial that can jump and a soft robot that crawls, rolls, catches fast-moving objects and transports a pharmaceutical dose.

Composite magnetic 3D-printing filament fabrication protocol opens new perspectives in magnetic hyperthermia

Abstract:Three-dimensional printing technology has emerged as a promising tool for meticulously fabricated scaffolds with high precision and accuracy, resulting in intricately detailed biomimetic 3D structures. Producing magnetic scaffolds with the aid of additive processes, known as 3D printing, reveals multitude and state-of-the-art areas of application such as tissue engineering, bone repair and regeneration, drug delivery and magnetic hyperthermia. A crucial first step is the development of innovative polymeric composite magnetic materials. The current work presents a fabrication protocol of 3D printed polymer-bonded magnets using the Fused Deposition Modeling 3D printing method. Polymer-bonded magnets are defined as composites with permanent-magnet powder embedded in a polymer binder matrix. By using a low-cost mixing extruder, four (4) different filament types of 1.75 mm were fabricated using commercial magnetite magnetic nanoparticles mixed with a pure polylactic acid powder (PLA) and a ferromagnetic PLA (Iron particles included) filaments. The powder mixture of the basic filaments was compounded mixed with the nanoparticles, and extruded to fabricate the 3D printing filament, which is subsequently characterized structurally and magnetically before the printing process. Magnetic polymer scaffolds are finally printed using composite filaments of different concentration in magnetite. Our results demonstrate that the heating efficiency (expressed in W/g) of the 3D printed magnetic polymer scaffolds (ranging from 2 to 5.5 W/g at magnetic field intensity of 30 mT and field frequency of 365 kHz) can be tuned by choosing either a magnetic or a non-magnetic filament mixed with an amount of magnetite nanoparticles in different concentrations of 10 or 20 wt %. Our work opens up new perspectives for future research, such as the fabrication of complex structures with suitable ferromagnetic custom-made filaments adjusting the mixing of different filaments for the construction of scaffolds aimed at improving the accuracy of magnetic hyperthermia treatment.

Shimming Method for Permanent Magnet of Open-Type Low-Field MRI

Abstract:In the process of producing a permanent magnet,shimming is one of the key techniques for improving the efficiency and quality.At present,for the domestic manufacturers,the shimming methods of the open type low-field MRI lack the support of an integral theory.For this reason,the spherical harmonic function is introduced in analyzing the magnetic field and establishing the project both for active and passive shimming.The low-order terms of the spherical harmonic expansion can be easily shimmed by using the shim coil system.However,when the requirements exceed the capabilities of the corresponding active shim device,and when the high-order distortions require to be cancelled,passive shimming is applicable.In the experiment,the shim coils for the A~0_3 term that require heavy current can not be realized.Therefore,this paper adopts permanent magnetic material instead of shim coils,achieving good compensation for the magnetic field.
Implementing a two-stage, shim field-calibrated superconducting shimming method on a 7 T cryogen-free small animal MRI magnet

Abstract:Ultrahigh field systems ( ≥ 7 T) can increase the signal-to-noise ratio of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), improving imaging performance compared to systems with lower fields. However, these enhancements heavily rely on a high B0 magnetic field homogeneity level, which can be achieved through superconducting shimming. This paper presents a novel two-stage superconducting shimming method designed to achieve precise shimming for a 7 T MRI superconducting magnet. In the initial stage, detailed measurements and fittings were conducted to determine the current polarity and the axial or circumferential positions of the shim fields. Subsequently, an optimization strategy was implemented to determine the optimal shim currents with a flexible target field. The second stage involves an iterative process to fine-tune the current of a specific shim coil, identified as having the most significant impact on field homogeneity. The overall fitness of 99.5% underscores the precision in determining the current polarity and position of the shim fields. Significantly, the calibrated shim system substantially improves the peak-to-peak and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) field homogeneities from 107.42 ppm and 37.00 ppm to 11.12 ppm and 3.26 ppm, respectively, representing improvements of 89.65% and 91.19%. Furthermore, the simulation results of the fine-tuning stage demonstrate additional enhancements in peak-to-peak field homogeneity, to 9.9 ppm by reducing the current of the Z2 shim coil by 51.3 mA. Additionally, the shimmed magnetic field exhibited high time stability, with a maximum variation of only 27 μT observed within 48 h. Thus, the proposed two-stage superconducting shimming framework effectively addresses the challenge of imperfect B0 magnetic fields, enhancing peak-to-peak and RMSE field homogeneity. The stepwise optimized approach also mitigates deviations caused by shim-to-shim coupling, demonstrating its efficacy in achieving precise shimming in ultrahigh-field MRI systems.
