Abstract:Objective To investigate the areo-dynamic features of voice in patients with abmormal lung function,and to evaluate the effect of lung disfunction on areo-dynamics of voice.The relationship between respiration and phonation will be discussed.Methods The voice signals of sustained vowel /a/ were measured by a micro-computer with Dr Speech science for windows software and an aero-dynamic system in 50 patients with abmormal lung function and 50 healthy adults. The areo-dynamic parameters(mean airflow rate,MPT) were collected and analysed in the lowest pitch,normal pitch and the highest pitch.All patients were divided into two groups according to gender.Results In the patients of abmormal lung function ,the aero-dynamic parameters (MPT, mean air flow rate) were significantly decreased in the lowest pitch. In normal and the highest pitch, MPT were decreased significantly, other parameters changed too,but had no statistic value. There was a positive relationship between the degrees of lung disfunction and the areo-dynamics parameters.Conclusion Abnormal lung function affect significantly on areo-dynamics of voice in three different pitches.The changes of the parameters are related to the degrees of lung function.The results show that respiratory activities play an important role in phonation.
Use of Auditory Feedback Amplifier in Women Without Voice Complaints: A Comparison of Acoustic Measures, Self-Rated Vocal Effort, and Voice Intensity

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To compare the immediate effects of using MindVox in women without voice complaints for 1, 3, 5, and 7 minutes of reading tasks, on acoustic measurements of the vocal signal in low, medium, and strong intensity emissions; on self-rated effort vocal, and on the intensity of voice reception and production.METHODS: Participants read one text using MindVox for 1, 3, 5, and 7 minutes. After each time, measures of self-rated vocal effort were collected (BORG CR10-BR Scale), as well as samples of the vowel /e/ at low (>70 dB), moderate (≥70 dB and ≤80 dB), and high intensities (>80 dB). Acoustic measurements (F0, short-term acoustic measurements, and cepstral peak prominence measurements) were also collected before and after the procedure and subsequently analyzed in the CTS 5.0 Vox-Metria Program. Voice reception and production intensities were captured during the reading task using two decibel meters. One decibel meter was installed near the ear (average intensity received by the ear (EAVG)) and the other near the lips (average intensity captured near the lips (LAVG)), and the data were submitted for analysis.RESULTS: The Cepstral Peak Prominence-Smoothed increased in the first minute, the Cepstral Peak Prominence increased in the third minute, and the jitter decreased from the first minute. All these changes were observed at low intensity and were maintained at the other time points. For every 5 dB of amplification (EAVG), there was a 1 dB decrease in voice production (LAVG).CONCLUSION: Using MindVox in women without voice complaints brings positive immediate effects in cepstral measures and jitter at low intensity. There is a connection between the intensity of the voice received by the ear and the intensity of voice production.

Abstract:Stored iron readily available for hemoglobin synthesis was measured by means of repeated phlebotomy in 13 carefully selected normal young men and women. The stores of the males averaged 819 mg, while those of the 10 normal nulliparous women averaged only 254 mg or about one-third as much as in the males. The ability of orally administered iron to regenerate iron stores was studied in six of these previously normal volunteers, and in three women who had become iron depleted and severely anemic due to menorrhagia. It was demonstrated that iron stores can be replenished with iron administered orally, but to accomplish this the medication must be continued for several months after the hemoglobin concentration has returned to normal.

Abstract:Purpose: Literature suggests a dependency of the acoustic metrics, smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS) and harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR), on human voice loudness and fundamental frequency ( F 0). Even though this has been explained with different oscillatory patterns of the vocal folds, so far, it has not been specifically investigated. In the present work, the influence of three elicitation levels, calibrated sound pressure level (SPL), F 0 and vowel on the electroglottographic (EGG) and time-differentiated EGG (dEGG) metrics hybrid open quotient (OQ), dEGG OQ and peak dEGG, as well as on the acoustic metrics CPPS and HNR, was examined, and their suitability for voice assessment was evaluated. Method: In a retrospective study, 29 women with a mean age of 25 years (± 8.9, range: 18–53) diagnosed with structural vocal fold pathologies were examined before and after voice therapy or phonosurgery. Both acoustic and EGG signals were recorded simultaneously during the phonation of the sustained vowels /ɑ/, /i/, and /u/ at three elicited levels of loudness (soft/comfortable/loud) and unconstrained F 0 conditions. Results: A linear mixed-model analysis showed a significant effect of elicitation effort levels on peak dEGG, HNR, and CPPS (all p < .01). Calibrated SPL significantly influenced HNR and CPPS (both p < .01). Furthermore, F 0 had a significant effect on peak dEGG and CPPS ( p < .0001). All metrics showed significant changes with regard to vowel (all p < .05). However, the treatment had no effect on the examined metrics, regardless of the treatment type (surgery vs. voice therapy). Conclusions: The value of the investigated metrics for voice assessment purposes when sampled without sufficient control of SPL and F 0 is limited, in that they are significantly influenced by the phonatory context, be it speech or elicited sustained vowels. Future studies should explore the diagnostic value of new data collation approaches such as voice mapping, which take SPL and F 0 effects into account.

Abstract:Extensive discussions and roundtables done by the panelists with tens of CIOs in recent years suggest that there is increased CIO concern about the depreciation in the perceived importance of MIS in the industry and a need therefore to adapt the curriculum of MIS and its place in the MBA program to what the industry needs. The panel will discuss this issue by first presenting the industry view of the issue based on CIO input and with it the need to reengineer the curriculum accordingly to tune it to what the industry, our clients, needs. The panel will then balance this perspective with a more cautious academic one. Practical steps academia can take will also be discussed.
Water Resistance Therapy in Individuals with Parkinson's Disease: A Session-by-Session Analysis of the Vocal Quality

Abstract:Summary Objectives Verify session-by-session effects of the water resistance therapy (WRT) on the vocal quality of individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods This is a retrospective analytical study. Then, the samples were acquired from a database composed of 10 men aged between 50 and 90 years old diagnosed with PD. The participants underwent WRT with a resonance tube; then, they were guided to perform the following phonatory tasks: comfortable pitch and loudness, high pitch, low pitch, ascending and descending glissandos, and sentence uttering. Furthermore, tube depth ranged from 2 cm to 9 cm. Finally, WRT was implemented twice per week, totaling eight sessions, each lasting 45 minutes. Participants were assessed before and after each therapy session. Hence, the data were assessed with spectrographic analysis, vocal intensity, cepstral peak prominence-smoothed, alpha ratio, L1-L0, oscillatory frequency, and auditory-perceptual assessment of overall degree, roughness, breathiness, and instability. One-way repeated measures analysis of variance and Friedman tests were applied ( P < 0.05). Furthermore, Holm-Sidak and Tukey tests were used as posthoc tests. Results After the sixth session, the spectrographic analysis revealed that the tracing color intensity of medium frequencies darkened, whereas a better result could be observed after the eighth session. Regarding vocal intensity, the improvement could be observed from the third session. Additionally, L1-L0 followed the same results. The overall degree auditory-perceptual assessment revealed the best results only after the second, third, and fourth sessions; however, after the eighth session, the instability increased. Conclusions WRT allowed better results from the third session, with some improvements in the sixth session. However, the instability increased after the eighth session; thus, it is important to review the phonatory tasks and session numbers to avoid an overload in the phonatory system.

Abstract:Summary Objective Phonotrauma has been hypothesized to be associated with prolonged and/or accumulated biomechanical stress on vocal fold tissue. This hypothesis can be tested using ambulatory monitoring of vocal fold dissipated power, which requires a reliable method for its noninvasive estimation during the activity of daily living. The first aim of this study was to show that a laboratory-based estimate of vocal fold dissipated power computed from intraoral pressure (IOP) has significant discriminative power in individuals with phonotraumatic vocal hyperfunction (PVH). Considering that estimation of subglottal pressure from IOP is not practical for ambulatory applications, an alternative approach should be used. The second aim of this study was to test the impact of two alternative methods for the estimation of subglottal pressure on the discriminative power of vocal fold dissipated power in individuals with PVH and, hence, to provide an evidence-based recommendation for future ambulatory monitoring studies of vocal fold dissipated power. Method Four groups of adult females were included in this study: 16 individuals with PVH, 16 individuals with nonphonotraumatic vocal hyperfunction (NPVH), and two groups of vocally typical controls matched to the participants in each patient group in terms of age and occupation. Each participant produced strings of five consecutive /pae/ syllables while wearing a pneumotachograph mask with an IOP tube. Neck-surface accelerometer and acoustic signals were recorded simultaneously using an ambulatory voice monitor and a head-mounted microphone, respectively. IOP was used to estimate subglottal pressure and subject-specific calibration factors were determined for the estimation of subglottal pressure from the accelerometer signal. Results (1) Individuals with PVH had significantly higher dissipated power than controls ( P = 0.001, Cohen's D = 1.31) when the intraoral estimate of subglottal pressure was used in the computation of dissipated power. (2) The difference between the dissipated power of individuals with NPVH and their matched controls was not significant. (3) When microphone-based sound pressure levels was used for the estimation of subglottal pressure, the difference between individuals with PVH and their matched controls vanished ( P = 0.23). (4) When subject-specific estimation of subglottal pressure from the accelerometer was used, the discriminative power returned with a very large effect size ( P = 0.001, D = 1.38). Conclusion Increased dissipated power is sensitive and specific to individuals with PVH among individuals with hyperfunctional voice disorders. The results provide evidence that accelerometer-based estimate of energy dissipation dose (power integrated over time) during daily life could be clinically useful.

Abstract:Abstract Individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) experience speech and voice-related symptoms that diminish communication and quality of life. Semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercises are targeted interventions that, when combined with the positive psychosocial benefits of therapeutic group singing (TGS), may affect outcomes. The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of SOVT exercises, specifically straw phonation combined with TGS, to improve voice quality and mood for individuals with PD. We used a true experimental pretest–posttest between-subjects design (i.e., randomized controlled trial) facilitated by a board-certified music therapist. All participants (N = 27) were randomly assigned to one of three groups (a) straw phonation combined with TGS (SP + TGS, n = 10), (b) TGS (n = 10), and (c) speaking-only control group (n = 7). Participants completed voice recordings for acoustic measures and the Visual Analogue Mood Scale for mood analysis before and after a 30-min intervention. The results demonstrated significant improvement in voice quality evidenced by decreasing Acoustic Voice Quality Index scores following a single session for both SP + TGS and TGS intervention groups when compared to the control. Happiness scores improved in the experimental groups when compared to control. Although not statistically significant, participants in the experimental groups (SP + TGS, TGS) demonstrated better mean mood scores on happiness, anxiety, and angry when compared to control, indicating a positive psychological response to the singing interventions. Overall, this study indicated the effectiveness of SP + TGS and TGS as promising therapeutic interventions for voice quality and mood in individuals with PD.

Comparing the Exposure-Response Relationships of Physiological and Traditional Vocal Warm-ups on Aerodynamic and Acoustic Parameters in Untrained Singers.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES:The aim of this study was to quantify the effects of traditional and physiological warm-up exercises and to determine the optimal duration of these methods using acoustic and aerodynamic metrics.METHODS:Twenty-six subjects were recruited to participate in both straw phonation exercises (physiological vocal warm-up) and traditional singing exercises (traditional vocal warm-up) for 20 minutes each, 24 hours apart. Phonation threshold pressure (PTP), fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, and noise-to-harmonics ratio were measured before the intervention (m0), as well as after 5 minutes (m5), 10 minutes (m10), 15 minutes (m15), and 20 minutes (m20) of intervention.RESULTS:PTP decreased significantly after straw phonation and reached a minimum value at 10 minutes (P < 0.001) and remained stable in traditional singing exercises. There were significant differences in fundamental frequency and shimmer from m0 to m15 and m20 in the traditional singing group (P = 0.001, P = 0.001, P = 0.001, and P = 0.002, respectively). No significant changes in acoustic parameters were observed after straw phonation.CONCLUSIONS:Both straw phonation exercises and traditional singing exercises are effective for voice warm-up. Straw phonation improves the subjects' fatigue resistance and vocal economy, resulting in a reduced PTP, whereas traditional singing exercises focus on technical singing skills, leading to an improvement of acoustic variables.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Gene manipulation tools for an arachidonic-producing filamentous fungus, Mortierella alpina 1S-4, have not been sufficiently developed. In this study, Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation (ATMT) was investigated for M. alpina 1S-4 transformation, using the uracil-auxotrophic mutant (ura5− strain) of M. alpina 1S-4 as a host strain and the homologous ura5 gene as a selectable marker gene. Furthermore, the gene for ω3-desaturase, catalyzing the conversion of n-6 fatty acid to n-3 fatty acid, was overexpressed in M. alpina 1S-4 by employing the ATMT system. As a result, we revealed that the frequency of transformation surpassed 400 transformants/108 spores, most of the integrated T-DNA appeared as a single copy at a random position in chromosomal DNA, and most of the transformants (60 to 80%) showed mitotic stability. Moreover, the accumulation of n-3 fatty acid in transformants was observed under the conditions of optimal ω3-desaturase gene expression. In particular, eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3), an end product of n-3 fatty acids synthesized in M. alpina 1S-4, reached a maximum of 40% of total fatty acids. In conclusion, the ATMT system was found to be effective and suitable for the industrial strain Mortierella alpina 1S-4 and will be a useful tool for basic mutagenesis research and for industrial breeding of this strain.
Exploring the Role of Opera Voice Quality Exercise in the Voice Therapy

Abstract:Summary Objective There are very diverse approaches for voice therapy, and the application of voice quality used in vocal arts in voice therapy can also be seen. However, there is little research on the application of opera voice quality in voice therapy. This study explored the applications of our Opera Voice Quality Exercise in the field of voice therapy and investigated the impacts of this exercise on pitch, intensity, voice quality, and vocal ability. Methods Sixty-two healthy subjects, defined as those with no discomfort in their voice and no appearance of organic lesions on the larynx via stroboscopic laryngoscopy were included in the study. The subjects were randomly divided into an experimental group of 31 subjects and a control group of 31 subjects. The experimental group received a voice health education and weekly coaching sessions of Opera Voice Quality Exercise, whereas the subjects in the control group only had the former. The acoustic and aerodynamic parameters were evaluated before and after the experimental interventions. Results When producing [a] at comfortable speech pitch and intensity, the experimental group compared to the control group showed statistically significant improvement ( P < 0.05) in the irregularity component (IC) parameter for males. When producing [a] at loudest intensity at a higher pitch in the normal speech pitch range, the experimental group compared to the control group showed statistically significant increase ( P < 0.01) in sound pressure level (SPL) as well as improvements ( P < 0.05) in shimmer and IC parameters for males. There was a statistically significant increase ( P < 0.05) in SPL for females. During continuous speech, the experimental group compared to the control group showed statistically significant increase ( P < 0.01) in SPLmax (maximum sound pressure level) for both males and females. There was a statistically significant increase in highest pitch ( P < 0.01) and lowest pitch ( P < 0.05) for males. Conclusion Regardless of gender, there is the greatest impact of Opera Voice Quality Exercise on phonation intensity. Furthermore, for males, this exercise causes the voice quality to be improved and the speech pitch to raise. Therefore, there may be applications of Opera Voice Quality Exercise in voice problems with weak voice such as nonorganic hypofunctional dysphonia, vocal fold paresis and paralysis, and voice problems related to Parkinson and age.

Abstract:Communication Disorders Quarterly, Ahead of Print. The study aimed to describe the outcomes of the voice use reduction (VUR) program on voice quality and vocal fatigue (VF) in occupational voice users (OVUs). A within-subject, quasi-experimental, pre-test, post-test research design was performed on 30 OVUs. Perceptual and acoustic outcome measures were employed pre-and post-implementation of the VUR, including the GRBASI 4-point rating scale, jitter, shimmer, fundamental frequency (F0), harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR), maximum phonation time (MPT), frequency min and max, intensity min and max, the dysphonia severity index (DSI), and the vocal fatigue index (VFI). The pre-and post-test outcomes revealed significant (p < .001) decreases in perceptual G (Grade of hoarseness), R (Roughness), A (Asthenia), S (Strain), and I (Instability). Perceptual normality in these areas increased significantly (p < .001). Acoustic measures revealed significant (p < .05) decreases in Jitter%, Intensity (dB) Min, and DSI scores as well as significant (p < .05) increases in MPT /a/, /s/, and /z/, Frequency (Hz) Max, and F0 (Hz) Max, indicating improved voice quality at post-test. The VUR program positively affected and improved OVUs' perception of VF in the areas of tiredness of voice and physical discomfort. OVUs strongly perceive improvement of VF symptoms with rest regardless of the current level of VF they are experiencing. When approaching OVUs, clinicians are encouraged to use a combination of direct voice therapy and vocal hygiene accompanied by VUR to help develop healthier use of the voice, facilitate healing, and prevent further/future injury or disorder.

Cardiorespiratory optimization during improvised singing and toning

Abstract:We evaluated the effect of different forms of singing on cardiorespiratory physiology, and we aimed at disentangling the role of breathing from that of vocal production. Cardiorespiratory recordings were obtained from 20 healthy adults at rest and during: a) singing of familiar slow songs as in the standard form of Western culture; b) improvised vocalization of free vowel sounds, known as toning. To disentangle the role of breathing from that of vocal production, we compared the vocal conditions with matched breathing-only conditions. Toning significantly improved heart rate variability, ventilatory efficiency and slowed respiration to almost exactly six breaths per minute (p < 0.001), a pattern that is known to optimize cardiovascular function and that coincides with the period of endogenous circulatory rhythms. Singing songs also positively impacted cardiorespiratory function, although to a lesser extent. The breathing pattern imposed upon participants in the absence of vocal production was sufficient to generate the physiological benefits. The effects of toning are similar to what has been previously described as a result of engaging in formal breathing exercises. Toning and singing may offer an engaging and cost effective tool to trigger beneficial respiratory patterns and the related cardiovascular benefits.
Toward Sham Interventions for Behavioral Voice Treatment Outcome Research in Female Students Without Dysphonia

Abstract:Objectives/hypothesis: To develop sham voice treatment techniques to be used in voice treatment outcome research, and to investigate their effectiveness as sham. This entails that the techniques induce no changes in voice or voice physiology, yet still lead to a perception of efficacy. Study design: Prospective randomized blinded controlled study. Methods: Three distinct sham intervention protocols (SIPs) were conceptualized as placebic comparators for three common voice treatment approaches with focus on vocalization (SIP1), respiration (SIP2), and manipulation (SIP3). Forty-eight female students participated in the study. Each participant attended ten 30-minute sessions over 5weeks, including a baseline evaluation, three sessions of one SIP, an inter-SIP voice assessment, three sessions of a second SIP, and a final post-SIP assessment. Auditory-perceptual and instrumental voice evaluations were used as voice treatment outcome measures. The participants' perception of voice-related quality of life was evaluated using the French Voice Handicap Index (VHIFR). Frequentist as well as Bayesian statistical methods were applied for group comparisons. The effects of combining two SIPs, the potential influence of SIP order, and experimenter/clinician effects, were also investigated. Results: The respiration-based SIP2 showed changes only in sound intensity level on a sustained vowel across the three sham intervention sessions. In contrast, the vocalization-based SIP1 impacted sound intensity level on a sustained vowel, sound intensity level on read text, and maximum phonation time. The manipulation-based SIP3 affected smoothed cepstral peak prominence on read text, Acoustic Voice Quality Index, and Dysphonia Severity Index. SIP2 thus demonstrated the highest alignment with the study's objectives, followed by SIP1 and SIP3. GRBASI ratings revealed no statistical differences for any SIP. VHIFr decreased significantly after all three SIPs. Combining the SIPs generally replicated the effects observed when each SIP was used individually. There was no order effect or experimenter/clinician effect on the results. Conclusions: This study demonstrated significant changes in participants' perceived voice quality (measured with VHIFr) across various SIPs, despite minimal impact on objective voice function measures. Further investigation is necessary to establish one or more protocols as genuinely sham interventions.

Abstract:The human voice is the product of a sophisticated interaction of aerodynamic and myoelastic forces, a perceptual phenomenon that is greatly influenced by vocal behaviour in interpersonal relationships. Vocal problems can be overly complex and can require a team approach, whether for diagnosis or treatment of the patient. This article describes the contribution of the speech-language pathologist, voice specialist SLP-V in the assessment of patients with vocal complaints. A clinical evaluation proposal developed in a 40- to 60-min session is presented. This proposal consists of the following steps: the history of the problem; the patient self-assessment; the auditory perceptual judgement and acoustic analysis; the physical examination; and finally, the correlation of all previously described steps with the medical diagnosis. Part A of this text explores the history of the problem with the focus to determine the influence of the vocal behaviour on the case; the self-assessment of the impact of the voice problem to verify the patient experience in living and coping with dysphonia; and the auditory perceptual judgement to describe the type and degree of vocal deviation. Worldwide published tendencies and specific comments of each step highlight the role of the SLP-V.
The Effectiveness Of Vocal Function Exercises (Vfes) on Vocal Measures with Healthy Adult Male Trained Singers

Abstract:Dr. Joseph Stemple created Vocal Function Exercises (VFEs) to help strengthen and stabilize the vocal musculature. The exercises were designed as a therapy technique to assist those with voice disorders. There is little research on the study of VFEs in normal healthy individuals and even less research on the effects of VFEs on healthy adult trained singers. Trained singers have the technical foundation to perform VFEs properly and could possibly benefit and improve upon their strength and muscle tone due to their established skills. The purpose of this study is to determine if Dr. Stemple???s VFEs are a technique that could be used by healthy adult male trained singers to increase their maximum phonation frequency range and maximum phonation time, and to decrease jitter and shimmer. The study consisted of 3 male participants who were healthy adult trained singers from the Fresno State Music Department who were enrolled in voice lessons with a professor from the Music Department. The study utilized a single-subject, multiple baseline across participants research design. The study consisted of baseline, treatment, and maintenance phases. During the treatment phase, participants were required to perform VFEs at home twice a day, two times each, and to meet with the researcher once a week for probe measurements. The results from this study are anticipated to enhance the vocal quality of established trained singers.

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of diaphragmatic breathing training with visual feedback on diaphragm movement and lung function in healthy women. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with the participation of 20 healthy college-aged women without any underlying physical conditions. The participants were randomly assigned into two groups: the intervention group that received diaphragmatic breathing training with visual feedback and the control group that underwent sham training without visual feedback. Diaphragmatics movement were assessed through respiratory motion analysis, and lung function was measured using spirometry before and after the training period. Data analysis included a paired t-test to compare within-group differences and an independent t-test to compare the effects between the two groups. Results: In both groups, diaphragmatic movement significantly increased after the intervention (p<.05). In addition, the intervention group that received visual feedback exhibited significant improvements in forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), and diaphragm movement (p<.05). However, the control group without visual feedback demonstrated only a significant increase in diaphragm movement (p<.05). Furthermore, the intervention group showed a significantly greater increase in FVC than the control group. Conclusion: This study reveals that incorporating visual feedback into diaphragmatic breathing training can effectively enhance diaphragmatic movement and improve lung function in healthy women. These findings suggest the potential benefits of visual feedback in optimizing the benefits of diaphragmatic breathing exercises. These results have implications for respiratory rehabilitation, stress reduction, and overall well-being in the general population. More studies are recommended to explore the long-term effects of diaphragmatic breathing training with visual feedback and its application in clinical populations with respiratory disorders.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Aging is progressive, and its effects on the respiratory system include changes in the composition of the connective tissues of the lung that influence thoracic and lung compliance. The Powerbreathe® K5 is a device used for inspiratory muscle training with resistance adapted to the level of the inspiratory muscles to be trained. The Pilates method promotes muscle rebalancing exercises that emphasize the powerhouse. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of inspiratory muscle training combined with the Pilates method on lung function in elderly women.METHODS: The participants were aged sixty years or older, were active women with no recent fractures, and were not gait device users. They were randomly divided into a Pilates with inspiratory training group (n=11), a Pilates group (n=11) and a control group (n=9). Spirometry, manovacuometry, a six-minute walk test, an abdominal curl-up test, and pulmonary variables were assessed before and after twenty intervention sessions.RESULTS: The intervention led to an increase in maximal inspiratory muscle strength and pressure and power pulmonary variables (p<0.0001), maximal expiratory muscle strength (p<0.0014), six-minute walk test performance (p<0.01), and abdominal curl-up test performance (p<0.00001). The control group showed no differences in the analyzed variables (p>0.05).CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest inspiratory muscle training associated with the Pilates method provides an improvement in the lung function and physical conditioning of elderly patients.

Effect of intensive water resistance phonation therapy for people with presbyphonia: A pilot study

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of this pilot study was to explore the efficacy of an intensive 3 week water resistance phonation (WRP) therapy program for people with presbyphonia.Method: Participants included 13 people with presbyphonia who received intensive WRP therapy. All participants completed eight sessions of therapy over 3 weeks. Auditory perceptual ratings, and acoustic and aerodynamic assessments were performed before and after treatment. Participants also completed the voice-related quality of life questionnaire before and after the treatment.Result: After 3 weeks of intensive voice therapy, significant improvements were demonstrated in acoustic, aerodynamic, and auditory perceptual parameters, as well as patient perceptions of voice-related quality of life. Acoustically, it was found there were significant decreases in shimmer (p = 0.019), noise-to-harmonic ratio (p = 0.016), and smoothed cepstral peak prominence (p = 0.001). Perceptually, the clients with presbyphonia showed significant reductions in the ratings of the overall grade, roughness, asthenia, and strain. Moreover, there was a significant increase in the total score of the Mandarin version of the Voice-Related Quality of Life measure post-therapy.Conclusion: The investigation provides preliminary evidence that people with presbyphonia can improve their vocal function and voice-related quality of life through intensive WRP therapy within a short period of time.
