Abstract:Inter-twisted bilayers of two-dimensional (2D) materials can host low-energy flat bands, which offer opportunity to investigate many intriguing physics associated with strong electron correlations. In the existing systems, ultra-flat bands only emerge at very small twist angles less than a few degrees, which poses challenge for experimental study and practical applications. Here, we propose a new design principle to achieve low-energy ultra-flat bands with increased twist angles. The key condition is to have a 2D semiconducting material with large energy difference of band edges controlled by stacking. We show that the interlayer interaction leads to defect-like states under twisting, which forms a flat band in the semiconducting band gap with dispersion strongly suppressed by the large energy barriers in the moire superlattice even for large twist angles. We explicitly demonstrate our idea in bilayer alpha-In2Se3 and bilayer InSe. For bilayer alpha-In2Se3, we show that a twist angle -13.2 degree is sufficient to achieve the band flatness comparable to that of twist bilayer graphene at the magic angle -1.1 degree. In addition, the appearance of ultra-flat bands here is not sensitive to the twist angle as in bilayer graphene, and it can be further controlled by external gate fields. Our finding provides a new route to achieve ultra-flat bands other than reducing the twist angles and paves the way towards engineering such flat bands in a large family of 2D materials.

Abstract:Ultraflat bands have already been detected in twisted bilayer graphene and twisted bilayer transition-metal dichalcogenides, which provide a platform to investigate strong correlations. In this paper, the electronic properties of twisted trilayer molybdenum disulfide (TTM) are investigated via an accurate tight-binding Hamiltonian. We find that the highest valence bands are derived from the F-point of the constituent monolayer, and they exhibit a graphenelike dispersion or become isolated flat bands that are dependent on the starting stacking arrangements. The lattice relaxation, local deformation, and external fields can significantly tune the electronic structures of TTM. After introducing the spin-orbital coupling effect, we find a spin-valley-layer locking effect at the minimum of the conduction band at the K- and K'-point of the Brillouin zone, which may provide a platform to study optical properties and magnetoelectric effects.
Flatbands in twisted double bilayer graphene

Abstract:Flatbands with extremely narrow bandwidths on the order of a few mili-electron volts can appear in twisted multilayer graphene systems for appropriate system parameters. Here we investigate the electronic structure of a twisted bi-bilayer graphene, or twisted double bilayer graphene, to find the parameter space where isolated flatbands can emerge as a function of twist angle, vertical pressure, and interlayer potential differences. We find that in twisted bi-bilayer graphene the bandwidth is generally flatter than in twisted bilayer graphene by roughly up to a factor of two in the same parameter space of twist angle $\theta$ and interlayer coupling $\omega$, making it in principle simpler to tailor narrow bandwidth flatbands. Application of vertical pressure can enhance the first magic angle in minimal models at $\theta \sim 1.05^{\circ}$ to larger values of up to $\theta \sim 1.5^{\circ}$ when $ P \sim 2.5$~GPa, where $\theta \propto \omega/ \upsilon_{F}$. Narrow bandwidths are expected in bi-bilayers for a continuous range of small twist angles, i.e. without magic angles, when intrinsic bilayer gaps open by electric fields, or due to remote hopping terms. We find that moderate vertical electric fields can contribute in lifting the degeneracy of the low energy flatbands by enhancing the primary gap near the Dirac point and the secondary gap with the higher energy bands. Distinct valley Chern bands are expected near $0^{\circ}$ or $180^{\circ}$ alignments.

Tunability of Multiple Ultraflat Bands and Effect of Spin-Orbit Coupling in Twisted Bilayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Abstract:Ultraflat bands that have been theoretically and experimentally detected in a bunch of van der Waals stacked materials show some peculiar properties, for instance, highly localized electronic states and enhanced electron-electron interactions. In this Rapid Communication, using an accurate tight-binding model, we study the formation and evolution of ultraflat bands in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) under low rotation angles. We find that, unlike in twisted bilayer graphene, ultraflat bands exist in TMDCs for almost any small twist angles and their wave function becomes more localized when the rotation angle decreases. Lattice relaxation, pressure, and local deformation can tune the width of the flat bands, as well as their localization. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the flat bands and discover spin/orbital/valley locking at the minimum of the conduction band at the K point of the Brillouin zone. Ultraflat bands found in TMDCs with a range of rotation angle below 7 degrees may provide an ideal platform to study strongly correlated states.
Topological flat bands without magic angles in massive twisted bilayer graphenes

Abstract:Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) hosts nearly flat bands with narrow bandwidths of a few meV at certain {\em magic} twist angles. Here we show that in twisted gapped Dirac material bilayers, or massive twisted bilayer graphenes (MTBG), isolated nearly flat bands below a threshold bandwidth $W_c$ are expected for continuous small twist angles up to a critical $\theta_c$ depending on the flatness of the original bands and the interlayer coupling strength. Narrow bandwidths of $W \lesssim $30 meV are expected for $\theta \lesssim 3^{\circ} $ for twisted Dirac materials with intrinsic gaps of $\sim 2$ eV that finds realization in monolayers of gapped transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC), silicon carbide (SiC) among others, and even narrower bandwidths in hexagonal boron nitride (BN) whose gaps are $\sim 5$ eV, while twisted graphene systems with smaller gaps of a few tens of meV, e.g. due to alignment with hexagonal boron nitride, show vestiges of the magic angles behavior in the bandwidth evolution. The phase diagram of finite valley Chern numbers of the isolated moire bands expands with increasing difference between the sublattice selective interlayer tunneling parameters. The valley contrasting circular dichroism for interband optical transitions is constructive near $0^{\circ}$ and destructive near $60^{\circ}$ alignments and can be tuned through electric field and gate driven polarization of the mini-valleys. Combining massive Dirac materials with various intrinsic gaps, Fermi velocities, interlayer tunneling strengths suggests optimistic prospects of increasing $\theta_c$ and achieving correlated states with large $U/W$ effective interaction versus bandwidth ratios.

Flat-band optical phonons in twisted bilayer graphene

Abstract:Twisting bilayer sheets of graphene have been proven to be an efficient way to manipulate the electronic Dirac-like properties, resulting in flat bands at magic angles. Inspired by the electronic model, we develop a continuum model for the lattice dynamics of twisted bilayer graphene and we show that a remarkable band flattening applies to almost all the high-frequency in-plane lattice vibration modes, including the valley Dirac phonon, valley optical phonon, and zone-center optical phonon bands. Utilizing an approximate approach, we estimate small but finite magic angles at which a vanishing phonon bandwidth is expected. In contrast to the electronic case, the existence of a restoring potential prohibits the emergence of a magic angle in a more accurate modeling. The predicted phonon band-flattening is highly tunable by the twist angle and this strong dependence is directly accessible by spectroscopic tools.

Abstract:Twisted bilayer graphene with tiny rotation angles have drawn significant attention due to the observation of the unconventional superconducting and correlated insulating behaviors. In this paper, we employ a full tight-binding model to investigate collective excitations in twisted bilayer graphene near the magic angle. The polarization function is obtained from the tight-binding propagation method without diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix. With the atomic relaxation considered in the simulation, both damped and undamped plasmon modes are discovered near the magic angle under both room temperature and superconductivity transition temperature. In particular, an undamped plasmon mode in narrow bands can be directly probed in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene at superconductivity transition temperature. The undamped plasmon mode is tunable with angles and gradually fades away with both temperature and chemical potential. In practice, the flat bands in twisted bilayer graphene can be detected by exploring the collective plasmons from the measured energy loss function.
Bilayer twisting as a mean to isolate connected flat bands in a Kagome lattice through Wigner crystallization

Abstract:The physics of flat band is novel and rich but difficult to access. In this regard, recently twisting of bilayer van der Waals (vdW)-bounded two-dimensional (2D) materials has attracted much attention, because the reduction of Brillouin zone will eventually lead to a diminishing kinetic energy. Alternatively, one may start with a 2D Kagome lattice, which already possesses flat bands at the Fermi level, but unfortunately these bands connect quadratically to other (dispersive) bands, leading to undesirable effects. Here, we propose, by first-principles calculation and tight-binding modeling, that the same bilayer twisting approach can be used to isolate the Kagome flat bands. As the starting kinetic energy is already vanishingly small, the interlayer vdW potential is always sufficiently large irrespective of the twisting angle. As such the electronic states in the (connected) flat bands become unstable against a spontaneous Wigner crystallization, which is expected to have interesting interplays with other flat-band phenomena such as novel superconductivity and anomalous quantum Hall effect.

Abstract:Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene exhibits correlated phenomena such as superconductivity and Mott insulating states related to the weakly dispersing flat band near the Fermi energy. Such a flat band is expected to be sensitive to both the moiré period and lattice relaxations. Thus, clarifying the evolution of the electronic structure with the twist angle is critical for understanding the physics of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene. Here we combine nano-spot angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy to resolve the fine electronic structure of the flat band and remote bands, as well as their evolution with twist angle from 1.07° to 2.60°. Near the magic angle, the dispersion is characterized by a flat band near the Fermi energy with a strongly reduced band width. Moreover, we observe a spectral weight transfer between remote bands at higher binding energy, which allows to extract the modulated interlayer spacing near the magic angle. Our work provides direct spectroscopic information on flat band physics and highlights the important role of lattice relaxations.

Twistronics in graphene-based van der Waals structures

Abstract:The electronic properties of van der Waals (vdW) structures can be substantially modified by the moire superlattice potential, which strongly depends on the twist angle among the compounds. In twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), two low-energy Van Hove singularities (VHSs) move closer with decreasing twist angles and finally become highly non-dispersive flat bands at the magic angle (~ 1.1 degree). When the Fermi level lies within the flat bands of the TBG near the magic angle, Coulomb interaction is supposed to exceed the kinetic energy of the electrons, which can drive the system into various strongly correlated phases. Moreover, the strongly correlated states of flat bands are also realized in other graphene-based vdW structures with an interlayer twist. In this article, we mainly review the recent experimental advances on the strongly correlated physics of the magic-angle TBG (MATBG) and the small-angle twisted multilayer graphene. Lastly we will give out a perspective of this field.

Tuning Band Gaps in Twisted Bilayer MoS_2

Abstract:In the emerging world of twisted bilayer structures, the possible configurations are limitless, which enables a rich landscape of electronic properties. In this paper, we focus on twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and study their properties by means of an accurate tight-binding model. We build structures with different angles and find that the so-called flat bands emerge when the twist angle is sufficiently tiny (smaller than 7.3 degrees). Interestingly, the band gap can be tuned up to 5% (107 meV) when the twist angle in the relaxed sample varies from 21.8 degrees to 0 degrees. Furthermore, when looking at the local density of states we find that the band gap varies locally along the moire pattern due to the change in the coupling between layers at different sites. Finally, we also find that the system can suffer a transition from a semiconductor to a metal when a sufficiently strong electric field is applied. Our study can serve as a guide for the practical engineering of TMDC-based optoelectronic devices.
Extremely Flat Band in Antiferroelectric Bilayer Α-In2se3 with Large Twist-Angle

Abstract:The moiré-pattern with slightly interlayer-twisted bilayer two-dimensional (2D) materials has recently been receiving substantial attention. One of the major characters for these intriguing structures is the appearance of low-energy ultra-flat bands and thus a package of new physics associated with strong electron correlation emerges. However, such new physics may become vague unless the twist-angle θ is sufficiently small such as θ ∼ 1°, making practical applications and control-flexibility hard to handle. In this work, we explore the possible flat-band moiré physics in recently concerned 2D bilayer α-In2Se3 which is antiferroelectric with sublayer out-of-plane (OP) polarizations, addressing the potential role of polarization-bound charges in modulation of electron–electron correlation and interlayer hybridization, based on the extensive first-principles calculations. On one hand, it is found that the low energy band becomes extremely flat in the bilayer α-In2Se3 moiré-pattern with relatively large twist-angle, e.g. θ = 13.17°, which is more easily accessible experimentally. On the other hand, the impact of the sublayer OP polarizations on the band structure is asymmetric, and the flattening effect is much more remarkable for the end-to-end polarization alignment but weaker for the head-to-head alignment. This work thus opens a broad roadmap for technological access to artificial fabrication of novel moiré-patterned 2D materials by means of low-dimensional ferroelectricity.
Flat-band spin density wave in twisted bilayer materials

Abstract:Twisting is a novel technique for creating strongly correlated effects in two-dimensional bilayered materials, and can tunably generate nontrivial topological properties, magnetism, and superconductivity. Magnetism is particularly significant as it can both compete with superconductivity and lead to the emergence of nontrivial topological states. However, the origin of magnetism in twisted structures remains a subject of controversy. Using self-developed large-scale electronic structure calculations, we propose the magnetism in these twisted bilayer systems originates from spin splitting induced by the enhanced ratio of the exchange interaction to band dispersion.

Extended magic phase in twisted graphene multilayers

Abstract:Theoretical and experimental studies have verified the existence of ``magic angles'' in twisted bilayer graphene, where the twist between layers gives rise to flat bands and consequently highly correlated phases. Narrow bands can also exist in multilayers with alternating twist angles, and recent theoretical work suggests that they can also be found in trilayers with twist angles between neighboring layers in the same direction. We show here that flat bands exist in a variety of multilayers where the ratio between twist angles is close to coprime integers. We generalize previous analyses, and, using the chiral limit for interlayer coupling, give examples of many combinations of twist angles in stacks made up of three and four layers which lead to flat bands. The technique we use can be extended to systems with many layers. Our results suggest that flat bands can exist in graphene multilayers with angle disorder, that is, narrow samples of turbostatic graphite.

Abstract:The two-dimensional layered semiconductor MoSi2N4, which has several advantages including high strength, excellent stability, high hole mobility, and high thermal conductivity, was recently successfully synthesized using chemical vapor deposition. Based on first-principles calculations, we investigate the effects of the twist angle and interlayer distance variation on the electronic properties of twisted bilayer MoSi2N4. The flat bands are absent for twisted bilayer MoSi2N4 when the twist angle θ is reduced to 3.89°. Taking twisted bilayer MoSi2N4 with θ of 5.09° as an example, we find that flat bands emerge as the interlayer distance decreases. As the interlayer distance can be effectively modulated by hydrostatic pressure, we propose hydrostatic pressure as a knob for tailoring the flat bands in twisted bilayer MoSi2N4. Our findings provide theoretical support for extending the applications of MoSi2N4 in strong correlation physics and superconductivity.

Abstract:Flat electronic bands, characteristic of ‘magic-angle’ twisted bilayer graphene, host many correlated phenomena1–9. Nevertheless, many properties of these bands and emerging symmetry-broken phases are still poorly understood. Here we use scanning tunnelling spectroscopy to examine the evolution of the twisted bilayer graphene bands and related gapped phases as the twist angle between the two graphene layers changes. We detect filling-dependent flattening of the bands that is appreciable even when the angle is well above the magic angle value and so the material is nominally in a weakly correlated regime. Upon approaching the magic angle, we further show that the most prominent correlated gaps begin to emerge when band flattening is maximized around certain integer fillings of electrons per moiré unit cell. Our observations are consistent with a model that suggests that a significant enhancement of the density of states caused by the band flattening triggers a cascade of symmetry-breaking transitions. Finally, we explore the temperature dependence of the cascade and identify gapped features that develop in a broad range of band fillings where superconductivity is expected. Our results highlight the role of interaction-driven band flattening in defining the electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene.
